- 0:00Podcast0.com Welcome to the Daily Quote, the podcast
- 0:07designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and this episode is brought to
- 0:13you by the Great News Podcast because good news should be
- 0:18heard. Link is in the show notes.
- 0:21Today's quote comes from Simone Will, a French philosopher,
- 0:26Mystic, and resistance activist who died at just 30-4 years old,
- 0:31yet left behind a body of writing that has profoundly
- 0:34shaped contemporary thought on attention, suffering, and what
- 0:38it means to truly see another human being.
- 0:42In a letter written in 1942, she wrote Attention is the rarest
- 0:49and purest form of generosity. 8 words, and they reframe what it
- 0:55means to be generous in a way that no amount of money ever
- 0:59could. When most of us think about
- 1:01generosity, we think about giving time, resources, money,
- 1:05help, and those things matter. But Will is pointing at
- 1:10something that sits beneath all of them.
- 1:12Something that cost nothing materially and yet is somehow
- 1:16the hardest thing to give your full, undivided, genuine
- 1:21attention. For Will, to attend well to
- 1:24another person meant making their welfare and well-being
- 1:28central to your concerns and granting them what she called
- 1:32the strange complement of being real.
- 1:36Not real in a vague sense, but real in the way you experience
- 1:39yourself as real. A full human being worthy of
- 1:43being truly seen. Think about how rare that
- 1:47actually is. How many conversations have you
- 1:50had recently where you were fully present, not composing
- 1:53your response while the other person was still speaking, not
- 1:57half watching your phone, not already thinking about what
- 2:00comes next? Even before smartphones existed,
- 2:04Whale recognized that giving genuine attention to another
- 2:08person was an extraordinary act. And in today's attention
- 2:12economy, where our focus is harvested as a commodity, it has
- 2:17become even rarer still. That's why Whale calls it the
- 2:23purest form of generosity. You can give money without
- 2:27caring. You can give time without being
- 2:30present. But attention, real attention,
- 2:34cannot be faked. It requires you to set yourself
- 2:37aside and make another person the center of your focus,
- 2:41completely without distraction, and in doing so, you give them
- 2:46something no amount of money can purchase.
- 2:49The experience of being truly seen.
- 2:52I think about the people in my life who have made me feel most
- 2:55valued. And almost without exception,
- 2:57what they gave me wasn't advice or resources or some big
- 3:01gesture. It was attention.
- 3:04The quality of their presence, the sense that in that moment, I
- 3:09was the most important thing in their world.
- 3:12And then I think about the conversations I've half given
- 3:15myself to, where I was physically present but mentally
- 3:19elsewhere. Those moments I don't give
- 3:22anything real at all. And so I suppose this is a
- 3:26lesson that I'm still learning. Showing up without your
- 3:30attention isn't really showing up.
- 3:32So here's the question. When did you last give someone
- 3:35your complete, undivided, genuine attention with no phone,
- 3:39no distraction, no part of your mind already somewhere else?
- 3:43Because that's the gift Wail is describing.
- 3:47It doesn't require wealth or status or even time in great
- 3:50quantities. It just requires presents.
- 3:54Real presents. In a world that is endlessly
- 3:59competing for your attention. Choose deliberately who gets it,
- 4:04and when you give it, give it completely.
- 4:08That's the rarest and purest form of generosity there is.
- 4:13That's going to do it. For today, I'm Anna McGivern,
- 4:16signing off for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:21Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
