Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Very exciting.
- 0:05Speaker 2: AJ Hawk is with US former NFL player currently with
- 0:08Speaker 2: the Pat McAfee show. What do you know him better
- 0:10Speaker 2: for by the way mcaffee show or former NFL player?
- 0:13Speaker 3: Oh, definitely the show right passed the man. So yeah,
- 0:17Speaker 3: it's been it's been awesome for sure. Had you hit
- 0:20Speaker 3: him today, man, pretty good? I mean today it didn't
- 0:22Speaker 3: really count. It's the pro am, so you're not going
- 0:24Speaker 3: to hit you know, swing pretty uh, pretty smooth. But no,
- 0:26Speaker 3: it's it's awesome on you. I'm not a pro golfer,
- 0:28Speaker 3: so I don't get too frustrated if I don't hit
- 0:30Speaker 3: it well.
- 0:30Speaker 4: But I had a great group. It was.
- 0:32Speaker 5: It was awesome, AJ when you guys started the Pat
- 0:35Speaker 5: McAfee show. I know you guys did shows at the
- 0:37Speaker 5: start of COVID separate from the McAfee show, But did
- 0:40Speaker 5: you ever think it could get to where it is now?
- 0:43Speaker 3: No, I mean obviously not, and and Pat had it
- 0:45Speaker 3: going a while before I joined him, but I started
- 0:48Speaker 3: joining uh pretty consistently once COVID hit. But no, I
- 0:51Speaker 3: mean I've had no clue when we're starting at what
- 0:54Speaker 3: it would be now and just what the Yeah, it's crazy,
- 0:59Speaker 3: so many awesome things that we get to do and
- 1:02Speaker 3: go watch these college college football playoff on the sidelines
- 1:05Speaker 3: and do these watch alongs.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Crazy right, Yeah, it's so awesome.
- 1:07Speaker 3: To watch the game from the end zone like it's
- 1:10Speaker 3: It makes me even a bigger fan of college football
- 1:13Speaker 3: getting to do that kind of stuff.
- 1:14Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you guys.
- 1:15Speaker 2: It's so proud of Pat because you know, Pat really
- 1:17Speaker 2: gambled on himself and there's a lot of you know,
- 1:19Speaker 2: there's a great lesson to be learned there.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Because he retired early.
- 1:23Speaker 2: A lot of people criticized him, he left money on
- 1:25Speaker 2: the table, but look.
- 1:26Speaker 1: What it's turned into. Man, he's the biggest thing going
- 1:29Speaker 1: right now.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Yeah, he's awesome.
- 1:30Speaker 1: He could do he do everything for him. Yes, it's
- 1:34Speaker 1: the best.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I want to talk to you about Brady Quinn because
- 1:37Speaker 2: he's you know, he does the morning show on Hour
- 1:39Speaker 2: Network and he's been on with us a bunch of times,
- 1:41Speaker 2: and he was telling us one time that you are
- 1:44Speaker 2: there was no better card giver than AJ Hawk, And
- 1:49Speaker 2: I was floored by that.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I was shocked by that. I didn't realize that.
- 1:54Speaker 2: I guess maybe I'm applying my own sensibilities that I
- 1:57Speaker 2: apologize in advance, but I didn't have you as a
- 1:59Speaker 2: guy who's down giving a lot of thought to what
- 2:01Speaker 2: it is he's going to write in a card.
- 2:02Speaker 1: You know, I guess it depends who the card is
- 2:04Speaker 1: going to.
- 2:05Speaker 6: You know.
- 2:06Speaker 3: I've always been yeah, I don't know what Brady I
- 2:09Speaker 3: know has said that a few times. Yeah, and yeah,
- 2:12Speaker 3: I don't know exactly what he's talking about. Sometimes I'll write,
- 2:15Speaker 3: you know, you get a birthday card from my mother
- 2:17Speaker 3: in law or whoever, my mom or my dad or
- 2:19Speaker 3: my brothers. Yes, like you'll, I'll take a little bit
- 2:22Speaker 3: of time. I'm a creative human. I'm terrible with numbers,
- 2:24Speaker 3: can't do math, but I can. I feel like I'm
- 2:26Speaker 3: I'm creative and have an imagination. And I always try
- 2:29Speaker 3: to tell my kids, you need to have an imagination,
- 2:31Speaker 3: and I think I do so sometimes I try to
- 2:32Speaker 3: express that when I'm when I'm writing cards to people
- 2:35Speaker 3: with my family.
- 2:36Speaker 5: If we had to flip the question now on Brady,
- 2:37Speaker 5: what's something that people don't know about Brady?
- 2:39Speaker 1: Yes, this is your chance, Ajay, let's go.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I mean, great question.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Every time I see him, in which I see him
- 2:45Speaker 3: all the time, and he lives very like every time, like,
- 2:47Speaker 3: you're such a giant human, just a big handsome dude.
- 2:50Speaker 4: And he's but he's.
- 2:51Speaker 3: All he's like a he's just he's not a real
- 2:54Speaker 3: character because he's that he's such a big, handsome, awesome Duobi.
- 2:58Speaker 3: He's actually like the best dude and super nice and
- 3:00Speaker 3: but everybody like the biggest family dude of all times. Yes,
- 3:03Speaker 3: it's awesome having him. He was in Florida, now he's
- 3:05Speaker 3: back in Ohio. It's great to have a brother in
- 3:07Speaker 3: law that you get along with, right.
- 3:09Speaker 4: The other way, right, My.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Other brother in law, Jack Johnson, is the man as well,
- 3:13Speaker 3: played hockey in the NHL over twenty years and the
- 3:15Speaker 3: nicest dude too. See, I'm very lucky. Yes, what my
- 3:17Speaker 3: brothers and my caddie out here, he has been for
- 3:19Speaker 3: like sex really Yeah, that's nice.
- 3:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 3:21Speaker 5: What do you remember most about your last game at
- 3:23Speaker 5: Ohio State against Brady Quinn In the lead up to
- 3:26Speaker 5: that game.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Oh man, Yeah, we were playing in the Fiesta Ball
- 3:29Speaker 3: against Notre Dame. Yeah, my senior year, there was a
- 3:32Speaker 3: bunch of like weird media stuff early on. They found
- 3:37Speaker 3: out that I was going out with his sister and
- 3:39Speaker 3: we weren't engaged actually at the time, but like, oh
- 3:40Speaker 3: it's I don't know how it got public. But then
- 3:43Speaker 3: there's like a little that stupid old school yeah, I
- 3:45Speaker 3: guess it's probably before the internet, right, stuff like that.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And then we played and luckily we won, and I
- 3:50Speaker 3: got sacked Brady a few times in that kid, you
- 3:53Speaker 3: a great team though they were awesome? Did you mind
- 3:55Speaker 3: above it all the time? You don't have to right now,
- 3:59Speaker 3: look at that dude, like he was a giant. He
- 4:01Speaker 3: would have ran me over. I had to multiple times,
- 4:04Speaker 3: like he would have absolutely would have killed and I
- 4:06Speaker 3: had to protect myself.
- 4:07Speaker 2: If I told you even back then that one day
- 4:09Speaker 2: twenty twenty six that Indiana would dominate college football, you
- 4:13Speaker 2: would have told me.
- 4:14Speaker 3: What obviously, I would have left had a hard time
- 4:17Speaker 3: believing you. But I mean, anything can happen now if
- 4:19Speaker 3: you like. And I was at I was down there
- 4:22Speaker 3: watching Indiana in person Indian zone, like I said in
- 4:24Speaker 3: these watchlongs we do, and I was blown away with
- 4:27Speaker 3: how they played, like they were so disciplined. Like I'm
- 4:30Speaker 3: a I'm like a football nerd when I see defense
- 4:32Speaker 3: play well with the proper the proper leverage all the time.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And this he's spilling it to his outside backer and
- 4:36Speaker 3: you're holding your gap. All this stuff in Indiana like
- 4:39Speaker 3: they didn't have. They played so hard and they were
- 4:42Speaker 3: so disciplined. It was like a thing of beauty watching
- 4:43Speaker 3: them play.
- 4:44Speaker 2: The American Century Championship is such a great event. You're
- 4:47Speaker 2: out here every single year, Like, what do you love
- 4:48Speaker 2: so much about this event?
- 4:49Speaker 4: Man?
- 4:50Speaker 1: I mean just look around like it's belief.
- 4:52Speaker 3: There's nothing nowhere in the world that I've been that
- 4:53Speaker 3: looks like this.
- 4:54Speaker 4: The lake's legit.
- 4:56Speaker 1: It's great getting in the lake every morning to jump in.
- 4:58Speaker 4: It's freezing.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You go in every morning.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like yeah, wow, you know everyone's in the cold, plunging.
- 5:02Speaker 4: You got to do your whole morning routine.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Garlage, Are you tell me late tomorrow morning you're gonna
- 5:07Speaker 1: be there? Yeah? We were there at like five fifteen
- 5:08Speaker 1: that I go in with you tomorrow. Yeah.
- 5:10Speaker 3: It's a little bit of a mental test when you
- 5:12Speaker 3: walk down it's forty eight degrees outside with forty nine Well.
- 5:16Speaker 2: What's the what's the key? Do you like tiptoe win
- 5:18Speaker 2: or you just jump right in? You gotta jump right in, right.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I mean, I think you know the end there's no tiptoe.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Why does im pact come out here anymore? Like he
- 5:26Speaker 2: was out of here a few years ago. I haven't
- 5:28Speaker 2: seen him saying I hope he comes back. I don't
- 5:29Speaker 2: know him, and he's got he is too busy kid.
- 5:31Speaker 2: He's got two young kids and just had another. So
- 5:33Speaker 2: it's uh, obviously hopefully comes back next year. It was awesome.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I got to play with him three days two years
- 5:38Speaker 2: in a row.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:39Speaker 1: What's the thing you missed the most about football? Is
- 5:41Speaker 1: there anything? Yeah?
- 5:42Speaker 3: Man, football is awesome. I miss all everything about football.
- 5:45Speaker 3: But I'm realistic and it's not like a you know,
- 5:48Speaker 3: I knew when I stopped playing, like yeah, I can't
- 5:50Speaker 3: play anymore. But man, I I get so excited watching it,
- 5:53Speaker 3: like I when I watched, like I say, in person,
- 5:55Speaker 3: and you know, I watch my kids play as well,
- 5:57Speaker 3: and it's just it's fun, right, It's physical, it's great.
- 6:00Speaker 5: Ay, j The Big ten has won the last three
- 6:03Speaker 5: national championships. As a Big ten guy yourself? Is it
- 6:06Speaker 5: Big ten versus the world right now? Because there's always
- 6:09Speaker 5: the talk with the SEC, but it feels like the
- 6:11Speaker 5: Big ten is kind.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Of Big ten is awesome.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Man. The SEC is awesome.
- 6:15Speaker 3: I have a hard time like creating an argument with that.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I think I think they're They're the tip of the spear,
- 6:21Speaker 3: both of them, and I think it's it's awesome and
- 6:24Speaker 3: it's fun to watch. But I don't have a I
- 6:26Speaker 3: can't sit here and I'm my high horse talking about Nick.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I think the Big Ten is amazing. I think the SEC.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I have so many buddies that played in the SEC,
- 6:33Speaker 3: and they are some of the biggest and best athletes
- 6:35Speaker 3: and best players of all time.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We were watching you on the well, I wasn't watching you,
- 6:40Speaker 2: my producer was, and I'm feeling like I should put
- 6:42Speaker 2: a flyer on you, like I feel like this could
- 6:44Speaker 2: be a top ten finish for you.
- 6:45Speaker 1: What do you think? Huh Yeah, I.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Mean I think my my previous best finish is like
- 6:49Speaker 3: fifty second.
- 6:51Speaker 4: I got my kids up.
- 6:52Speaker 1: I tell my kids every day I'm gonna win it.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I'm gonna win the American Central Championship, and they're okay, Dad,
- 6:57Speaker 3: fifty eighth place, so.
- 6:58Speaker 4: They're gonna I can't. I'm a town him. My games
- 7:01Speaker 4: really rounded.
- 7:02Speaker 2: In the form, So a top fifty sounds better, not
- 7:04Speaker 2: not top twenty.
- 7:05Speaker 3: Sure, sure, I'm coming first place gets a lab coat. Now,
- 7:09Speaker 3: so I'm going for first.
- 7:11Speaker 1: How many rounds of golfa you played before you got here?
- 7:14Speaker 1: I got that many. I'm guessing four or five.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I'd say, okay, I played a couple with Brady as
- 7:18Speaker 2: a as a as an athlete, as a world class athlete.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Does it bother you when guys like.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Taylor twelve men are like, hey, I played two rounds
- 7:25Speaker 2: this year, and then they go out like four at
- 7:27Speaker 2: the bar.
- 7:28Speaker 3: You know he's they were, hey, guess what he was
- 7:30Speaker 3: in lake yesterday this morning?
- 7:32Speaker 4: But I saw him yesterday. He was he was.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Getting in there and he he knows all twelve. It was, yeah,
- 7:35Speaker 3: he's a golfer, ya, I know we had him on
- 7:38Speaker 3: the other day. He was an athlete, So yes, I
- 7:41Speaker 3: just those guys had that silky smooth swing and ball
- 7:43Speaker 3: in the fairway that they know when they t off
- 7:45Speaker 3: that the ball is going to be in play.
- 7:47Speaker 1: That would be a great feeling I have. I've been
- 7:49Speaker 1: chasing that one. Were you into the US soccer at all? Yeah,
- 7:52Speaker 1: it was sweet. I'm not a huge soccer guy, but
- 7:55Speaker 1: I respect what they do.
- 7:56Speaker 7: Man.
- 7:56Speaker 3: I respect watching those guys play. I didn't think I would.
- 7:59Speaker 3: I didn't think i'd watched a much right, and I did.
- 8:01Speaker 1: They forced us to watch. Yeah, it was awesome, it
- 8:04Speaker 1: was cool. I don't I claim to understand what it's about.
- 8:08Speaker 4: And what they shouldn't doing it. It should be playing.
- 8:10Speaker 3: But I respect how they play, and you know, I
- 8:12Speaker 3: love that the coach gets into play hard and be tough.
- 8:15Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 8:16Speaker 5: You mentioned how many cool things you've gotten to do
- 8:18Speaker 5: as a member with the McAfee show. Is there anything
- 8:21Speaker 5: still on your sports bucket list where you're like, man,
- 8:23Speaker 5: it would be really cool if we could.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Check this out. That's a good question.
- 8:26Speaker 3: Yes, I'm honestly, I don't know if I can give
- 8:28Speaker 3: you an answer.
- 8:29Speaker 1: That's awesome? Are we I've done something winning this thing?
- 8:31Speaker 3: I mean, oh yeah, yeah, that's the top of the list.
- 8:34Speaker 1: It's up there, winning out here.
- 8:36Speaker 3: Yes, there's so many awesome things like I've been I've
- 8:39Speaker 3: been super lucky to get to experience a lot of
- 8:41Speaker 3: awesome things even after playing football now like to be
- 8:44Speaker 3: in awesome events.
- 8:45Speaker 1: But yeah, why not win it out here?
- 8:47Speaker 3: I mean, I don't, man, these guys are seriously watch
- 8:50Speaker 3: They're like they're putting their alignment sticks out here.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Friend of mine.
- 8:54Speaker 2: It's it's a ridiculous. He's playing nine tournaments already. I
- 8:56Speaker 2: put money on Marty, Well, I have put I put
- 8:58Speaker 2: all my money on Marty.
- 8:59Speaker 1: Yes, play, but there's a lot, there's a lot of
- 9:02Speaker 1: guys that can win it though. Yeah, does golf drop
- 9:03Speaker 1: be crazy? Though? Like everything?
- 9:05Speaker 4: Like?
- 9:05Speaker 2: No, But athletics have come fairly easy to you. I
- 9:07Speaker 2: imagine your entire life and this game's hard, man, it is.
- 9:10Speaker 3: But being an athlete helps with any kind of game
- 9:13Speaker 3: or sport you can play. But you don't have to
- 9:15Speaker 3: be an athlete to be a great golfer, right, So
- 9:17Speaker 3: I don't That's not a slight to anyone. I just
- 9:20Speaker 3: think you so many different Like just because someone's an
- 9:22Speaker 3: awesome athlete doesn't mean that it doesn't always translate to golf.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It usually doesn't.
- 9:26Speaker 3: Like it's isn't it crazy sometimes seeing how ugly some
- 9:28Speaker 3: swings are? If some of the people the greatest athletes, yes,
- 9:31Speaker 3: we know, yes, yeah, And I'm not food. Mine's not
- 9:34Speaker 3: pretty at all.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Look at Trey Wingo out there. Does he look like
- 9:37Speaker 2: an athlete to you? I mean that guy could smoke
- 9:38Speaker 2: a golf ball though I'm doing.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Yeah, you.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Donie but to two to eighty down the fairway every
- 9:45Speaker 2: single drun.
- 9:46Speaker 4: I believe it.
- 9:47Speaker 1: Oh if so, listen, I have a ridiculous take it.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I just want to get your thoughts right.
- 9:51Speaker 2: I think Caleb Williams is going to be the greatest
- 9:53Speaker 2: quarterback we've ever seen.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Am I nuts?
- 9:57Speaker 2: I mean, time will tell right now, but as well, listen,
- 10:01Speaker 2: this is sports radio.
- 10:02Speaker 1: We have to give an institute. I think he's awesome.
- 10:05Speaker 3: He's been you know, I played for the Packers for
- 10:07Speaker 3: nine years, so I think it's awesome that the Bears
- 10:09Speaker 3: are good and that they're they're it's a huge rivalry,
- 10:12Speaker 3: and I think Caleb's amazing their whole team. I like
- 10:15Speaker 3: how they're coach man, I like how they play. But
- 10:17Speaker 3: also I love the Packers and I feel good about
- 10:19Speaker 3: them where they're going.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Yeah, adye a my sports bucket list, I still have
- 10:22Speaker 5: to check off lambeau Field. But I hate cold football,
- 10:26Speaker 5: So it feels like that's kind.
- 10:28Speaker 4: Of did you play football?
- 10:29Speaker 1: Like playing was a walk out of Carolina?
- 10:31Speaker 4: Yes, I walk on in North Carolina.
- 10:32Speaker 5: But the second the season hit, like November is when
- 10:35Speaker 5: I started acting in I gotta start shutting it down
- 10:38Speaker 5: on the scout team.
- 10:40Speaker 4: So it wasn't noticeable.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Oh yeah, it was like the calendar hits November. It's
- 10:46Speaker 5: like a towner is going to be checked out. Somebody
- 10:48Speaker 5: else is going to get the scout teach. How long
- 10:50Speaker 5: did you last? I played three years as good for you.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Then he didn't completely package. Yeah, so what's not don't
- 10:55Speaker 5: like cold weather?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Yeah, little fingers get hurt when they get in the
- 10:59Speaker 1: little well I was.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I kind of was with the mindset. I'm on the
- 11:02Speaker 5: scout team. I'm never going to get off the scout team.
- 11:05Speaker 5: And when you get hit in the cold, it stings
- 11:08Speaker 5: a little more.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Yeah, that's why you got to be the hammer, not
- 11:11Speaker 3: the nail man.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I was exclusive, but sometimes it hurts being both.
- 11:16Speaker 3: But yes, I would rather win on that side, so
- 11:19Speaker 3: you wouldn't sell you lose some though.
- 11:20Speaker 5: I was on the scout kickoff team where the guy
- 11:23Speaker 5: would come and blindside you every time.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Did you guys go full go?
- 11:26Speaker 4: Yes? Yeah, so I was the nail.
- 11:29Speaker 5: So did you have to act like you didn't know?
- 11:32Speaker 5: They wouldn't tell us what look it was going to be,
- 11:34Speaker 5: and then I would get blindsided and hey, just look
- 11:36Speaker 5: this way, bud, don't don't peak because yes, bron coming
- 11:41Speaker 5: to ear hole.
- 11:42Speaker 1: The other time was huh.
- 11:44Speaker 5: It was the Georgia Tech when Georgia Tech would run
- 11:46Speaker 5: the option and I was the guy who would have
- 11:48Speaker 5: to dive at people's knees and they.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Would just kind of punch you away.
- 11:51Speaker 5: So I was always the nail when it came to
- 11:53Speaker 5: my walk on career at North Carolina. But I want
- 11:56Speaker 5: to go to cold football. Is there anything you could
- 11:58Speaker 5: kind of give tips on?
- 12:00Speaker 1: We wrapped that back in the cold football. We did that. Yes,
- 12:05Speaker 1: he brought a full circle.
- 12:06Speaker 4: So any tips for cold football?
- 12:08Speaker 3: Yeah, just take care honestly, your little fingers in your
- 12:11Speaker 3: your feet, hands and feet, so where like uh, you'd
- 12:14Speaker 3: wear like surgical gloves underneath football gloves. That helps a
- 12:17Speaker 3: little bit. People put vasilin on their arms. I mean,
- 12:21Speaker 3: you try it. It doesn't really do a whole lot.
- 12:23Speaker 3: But if your fingers feel okay and you and your
- 12:25Speaker 3: toes are all right, it's not bad.
- 12:26Speaker 1: You can do it.
- 12:27Speaker 2: We'll get you out of here on this note. And
- 12:28Speaker 2: we appreciate you doing this for us. I was, I
- 12:31Speaker 2: was in a shuttle last night.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Uh.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And Adam thelan is telling a story that a that
- 12:36Speaker 2: someone else in that shuttle dislocated his shoulder during an
- 12:39Speaker 2: NFL game and it was Charles Woodson, and Woodson was
- 12:43Speaker 2: hearing this for the first time, Like he knew he
- 12:46Speaker 2: dislocated someone's shoulder, he didn't know what was feelings.
- 12:49Speaker 1: And so I'm wondering, are there guys that.
- 12:51Speaker 2: You have hurt where you just haven't even like friends
- 12:53Speaker 2: of yours, where you just didn't realize it was that
- 12:55Speaker 2: person that later on in life they were like, Hey,
- 12:57Speaker 2: you're the guy who broke my knee. Yes, I don't No,
- 13:00Speaker 2: I don't know if I've been confronted that is that
- 13:02Speaker 2: strange that Woodson would know that though.
- 13:04Speaker 1: No, it's not. It's not once that I was.
- 13:07Speaker 3: I played one year with the Bengals. Brian Hartline was
- 13:09Speaker 3: on the Browns, and I've never asked Heart about it,
- 13:10Speaker 3: but I need to. I like retraced he I was
- 13:14Speaker 3: crushing the quarterback. I think I retraced and I went
- 13:16Speaker 3: back and he caught a ball and he started to
- 13:17Speaker 3: turn up and I hit him directly in the back
- 13:19Speaker 3: of the head, and.
- 13:20Speaker 1: I thought he was out. For a second. I thought
- 13:22Speaker 1: he was out there, and he popped.
- 13:24Speaker 3: Up because he's tough as nails And I've never asked him,
- 13:26Speaker 3: but I don't know if he was out or not
- 13:29Speaker 3: great to him either?
- 13:30Speaker 4: What?
- 13:30Speaker 2: But does he know? You don't know if well, does
- 13:32Speaker 2: he know it was you? No, we've never talked. I
- 13:34Speaker 2: don't know why I've never Your friends probably wouldn't remember that.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Yes, multiple different heart lives of scrappy SOB and he's awesome.
- 13:41Speaker 5: That's Ohio state on Ohio State crime.
- 13:43Speaker 3: Yes, that's why I'm saying he probably doesn't remember because
- 13:46Speaker 3: it's just running. It's just what he does. Yeah, of course,
- 13:48Speaker 3: guys hitting the back of the head all the time.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I just love the idea.
- 13:50Speaker 2: You could be hanging out with your friend and your
- 13:52Speaker 2: friend you know, took your knee out four years ago.
- 13:54Speaker 4: You know.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that'd be I It would not be fun.

- 15:28Speaker 2: Best for last year at the American Century Championships. Robert
- 15:31Speaker 2: Salas with us, the head coach of the Tennessee Titans,
- 15:34Speaker 2: and we just had a funny moment on the range
- 15:36Speaker 2: where you were hitting the ball so well, coach that
- 15:38Speaker 2: I said to you, I'm gonna put a flyer on you.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And what that means is I'm gonna sprinkle a little.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Bit of cash on you because you're you look that
- 15:44Speaker 2: good that stay in the range. Your son turns to me.
- 15:47Speaker 2: You're having a moment with him, and he says, don't.
- 15:51Speaker 4: You know what I called myself? Ranger?
- 15:54Speaker 1: Rick?
- 15:54Speaker 4: Yeah, the Tiger Woods was standing there.
- 15:56Speaker 2: You might think you this competition, but no, right, so
- 15:59Speaker 2: this is your first time? Is this your first time
- 16:01Speaker 2: in Lake Tahoe period?
- 16:02Speaker 4: Yeah, we came up here. You know, the the Niners
- 16:05Speaker 4: do an outstanding even here for their sponsors. They they
- 16:08Speaker 4: moved it. But when I first got to the Niners,
- 16:10Speaker 4: it was winterfest, right, and it was.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Out here right.
- 16:13Speaker 2: H But this is your first American Century championship. So
- 16:16Speaker 2: you're doing carry today? God, why you have to?
- 16:21Speaker 1: I think you have to.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I'll feel you guys in. I was actually inquired back
- 16:25Speaker 4: in high school. I was inquired, that is shock t wife. Okay,
- 16:28Speaker 4: it's a good way to meet that girl. That's a
- 16:31Speaker 4: heavy play, coach. But but we're not singing.
- 16:35Speaker 7: But you have a good singing voice that if you inquire,
- 16:37Speaker 7: depends on who you're talking in the shower. It sounds awesome, right, Well,
- 16:42Speaker 7: just like on the Rain the performance anxiety.
- 16:47Speaker 2: But you know these guys all right, so you know
- 16:49Speaker 2: like this is this is a big brotherhood, right, They're
- 16:51Speaker 2: all really tight.
- 16:52Speaker 1: They're gonna put some pressure on you, just saying okay,
- 16:54Speaker 1: they're gonna have a gun to my.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Coach.
- 16:58Speaker 5: You broke into coaching back in two thousand and two
- 17:00Speaker 5: at Michigan State. You were making six hundred dollars a month. Yeah,
- 17:04Speaker 5: when you think back to those days, what's something that
- 17:06Speaker 5: experience taught you that you still carry with you today?
- 17:10Speaker 4: A shit, I feel like we spent six hundred dollars
- 17:12Speaker 4: a week in door dash.
- 17:14Speaker 1: But that's it, huh. I have twin girls. I mean
- 17:17Speaker 1: it's more for me.
- 17:18Speaker 4: On one person a lots lots going on, you know,
- 17:22Speaker 4: like I'm fortunate I've I was in the banking industry beforehand,
- 17:26Speaker 4: and you know, I've always uh I shouldn't say I always,
- 17:30Speaker 4: but what I've learned is that if you do what
- 17:32Speaker 4: you love, it'll love you back. And that's kind of
- 17:34Speaker 4: what going through that making it wasn't about money for me,
- 17:36Speaker 4: Like I was making good money at the bank. Did
- 17:39Speaker 4: not like waking up in the morning, going and jumping
- 17:42Speaker 4: in rush hour traffic, driving to nine o'clock job, leaving
- 17:45Speaker 4: at five and people were great. Just didn't like doing it.
- 17:48Speaker 4: And in my message to anyone who's willing to listen
- 17:52Speaker 4: is that if you if you do what you love,
- 17:53Speaker 4: it'll love you back somehow someway. They may not love
- 17:55Speaker 4: you with money, but it'll love you with peace of
- 17:58Speaker 4: mind and actual joy. And we got a short time
- 18:01Speaker 4: on earth, might as well enjoy.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I love that. What do you love about coaching so much? Uh?
- 18:05Speaker 4: Just there's so many layers. There's there's the teaching part
- 18:09Speaker 4: of it. There's the competitive part of it. There's the
- 18:12Speaker 4: every day is something new part of it. There's uh,
- 18:16Speaker 4: the brotherhood part of it. There's there's so many layers
- 18:19Speaker 4: to it. In terms of football, it's sport.
- 18:22Speaker 1: You know.
- 18:23Speaker 4: I grew up in sport. I I was, I was,
- 18:26Speaker 4: I was. I was a water boy for my brother's
- 18:28Speaker 4: football team when I was five years old. And uh,
- 18:31Speaker 4: you know, I just I don't know it any other way.
- 18:33Speaker 4: My son and I, even though he just took up golf,
- 18:35Speaker 4: he talks smack all the time about my golf game,
- 18:37Speaker 4: even though he hasn't he hasn't beat.
- 18:38Speaker 1: Me yet, but he's like, well, he just did on
- 18:40Speaker 1: the reins to me.
- 18:41Speaker 4: And every day, every time I say it, he says,
- 18:43Speaker 4: I'm coming, you know, and he's got it. It's gonna happen.
- 18:47Speaker 1: You're gonna be funding him off for as long as
- 18:49Speaker 1: you can, right.
- 18:49Speaker 4: So if you you know so. So with regard to
- 18:51Speaker 4: your question, man, I've learned that if you truly love
- 18:54Speaker 4: something you you you throw all your heart and passion
- 18:57Speaker 4: into it. Uh, something that's gonna happen.
- 19:00Speaker 2: So this is your second head coaching stamp. What you
- 19:02Speaker 2: learn the first time around that you'll hopefully won't make
- 19:05Speaker 2: the same mistakes the second time around.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Ah that's a laundry list, man, you know. But I
- 19:10Speaker 4: always try to try to create a parallel for people
- 19:15Speaker 4: ask me that question. So, for like, you, what have
- 19:18Speaker 4: you learned since your first day being.
- 19:20Speaker 1: A host to listen better?
- 19:21Speaker 4: Yeah, But like like, there's no handbook, There is no handbook.
- 19:24Speaker 4: You just learn and you learn and you do things
- 19:26Speaker 4: and you have conviction on what you're doing, and then
- 19:28Speaker 4: you're like, eh, I want a good idea, and then
- 19:31Speaker 4: you step back and you reevaluate and you debrief yourself
- 19:33Speaker 4: and you find ways to improve upon everything that you've done.
- 19:37Speaker 4: And there's some things that we did at the Jets
- 19:38Speaker 4: that I thought were great and we'll continue to do.
- 19:40Speaker 4: There's some things that I didn't like that will change,
- 19:43Speaker 4: and there's and there's some things that I think we're
- 19:46Speaker 4: good that probably won't work out here and we're going
- 19:47Speaker 4: to have to change it up. So you just got
- 19:49Speaker 4: to keep an open mind, keep evolving, keep asking yourself
- 19:52Speaker 4: hard questions and evaluating and being truthful with yourself with
- 19:55Speaker 4: regards to was what you're doing in that moment good enough?
- 20:00Speaker 4: And if the answers yes, keep it going. If it's not,
- 20:03Speaker 4: you gotta change it.
- 20:03Speaker 2: So it's not any one thing, it's just constantly it's interesting.
- 20:07Speaker 5: Coach, we love cam Ward as a defensive minded coach.
- 20:10Speaker 5: What jumps off the tape when you watch cam Ward?
- 20:13Speaker 1: He's talented.
- 20:15Speaker 4: First off, he's talented, But like, I don't think the
- 20:18Speaker 4: tape and I and I say this respectfully because I
- 20:21Speaker 4: think his tape is fantastic. I don't think the tape
- 20:23Speaker 4: really doesn't justice because you know, I came in, we
- 20:27Speaker 4: studied him, you know, we played him last year when
- 20:29Speaker 4: I was at San Francis going, I was like, man,
- 20:30Speaker 4: it's a really talented young man. And and you hear things,
- 20:34Speaker 4: you know, you get the report. Uh, you talk to
- 20:36Speaker 4: the college scouts houses workout or his work ethic when
- 20:39Speaker 4: he was coming out of the draft, and they talk
- 20:41Speaker 4: about it, and you're just trying to get a feel
- 20:42Speaker 4: for the man. Being around him, watching him practice, watching
- 20:46Speaker 4: his day to day habits has created a whole new
- 20:49Speaker 4: appreciation for him. He's got an elite mindset. Uh, he
- 20:54Speaker 4: can move on to the next place. Like he has
- 20:56Speaker 4: he has very very short term memory. Yeah, so important. Yeah.
- 20:59Speaker 4: And and to be honest with you, like when we
- 21:01Speaker 4: go move the ball in practice, I mean I don't
- 21:04Speaker 4: think we've stopped him yet. You know, he's just a
- 21:07Speaker 4: elite improviser. He can play with instructure, he can play
- 21:11Speaker 4: on schedule, and he can he can improvise and uh
- 21:13Speaker 4: and but but most importantly, like the man easy elap.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And that's the most important for you by far.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, so your defense has to be like that's that's
- 21:22Speaker 2: awesome for your defense, only only from the standpoint. I
- 21:24Speaker 2: know you get mad at them because they can't stop them,
- 21:26Speaker 2: but they're not going to face too many guys as
- 21:28Speaker 2: talented as he is.
- 21:29Speaker 4: I look at like, we're gonna be all right.
- 21:32Speaker 1: I know that.
- 21:32Speaker 4: But I look at my coordinator when he throws a
- 21:34Speaker 4: ball and I'm like.
- 21:37Speaker 1: He's giving a little fist pump on the table.
- 21:39Speaker 4: But it's who you know. You're the head coach. You
- 21:41Speaker 4: can't share. So like when he throws dimes, I'm like yes,
- 21:45Speaker 4: And when we're.
- 21:45Speaker 7: Making stops, I'm like just inside, I'm just just a
- 21:48Speaker 7: ball of happiness.
- 21:50Speaker 1: That is so good.
- 21:51Speaker 5: You want to ask him about the Royal Rubble here, So, coach,
- 21:53Speaker 5: we have this debate all the time on the show.
- 21:55Speaker 5: If every NFL coach was entered into the Royal Rumble,
- 21:59Speaker 5: who would win? After seeing you in person? Yeah, it's
- 22:02Speaker 5: not even a question. So who would finish second. I
- 22:04Speaker 5: guess here's what I'll say.
- 22:06Speaker 4: People don't realize that one thing I always get when
- 22:08Speaker 4: people see me in person, They're like, Wow, you're a
- 22:10Speaker 4: lot bigger in person than I thought. Well, I'm standing
- 22:12Speaker 4: next to six foot five monsters right football field.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yes, now you're standing next to me.
- 22:18Speaker 4: Yes, that's how people see me. And so so, keeping
- 22:21Speaker 4: that in mind, you think about Dan Campbell, Mike Vrabel,
- 22:25Speaker 4: Kevin O'Connell, Demico Ryans, all the former players.
- 22:29Speaker 1: They're freaking huge. Yes, Kevin O'Connell's shocked us.
- 22:31Speaker 4: They're just they're just they're just enormous balls of muscle. Yes,
- 22:35Speaker 4: and like like they're they're they're professional athletes for a reason.
- 22:38Speaker 4: So I'll give you guys this story. So I was
- 22:40Speaker 4: twenty five years old and I was probably in the
- 22:43Speaker 4: best shape of my life. I was about two thirty,
- 22:46Speaker 4: just elite and just in tremendous shape. I was running
- 22:48Speaker 4: with the guys, with the players when I was a
- 22:50Speaker 4: quality control out of Houston, and I was lifting with them,
- 22:52Speaker 4: and I could throw with all of them. And so Demico,
- 22:56Speaker 4: we drafted Miko Ryans and we do a pair up drill.
- 22:59Speaker 4: But they're only it's an odd number of linebackers and
- 23:01Speaker 4: I've got to pair up with it. So I'm the
- 23:03Speaker 4: I'm the assistant linebackers coach. I was like, you know,
- 23:05Speaker 4: I'll pair up with the miko and we're doing this
- 23:07Speaker 4: shock drill, right, And so the linebackers coach, Johnny Holland goes,
- 23:11Speaker 4: you want a bag? I was like, nah, I'm good,
- 23:13Speaker 4: and he just two hand jams me and knocks the
- 23:16Speaker 4: wind out of me, right, you know, like, I don't
- 23:18Speaker 4: think people really understand how strong, Yes, these professional athletes are,
- 23:22Speaker 4: So with the whole royal rumbo question, just just list
- 23:26Speaker 4: all the professional the ones that were former professional athletes.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Let them I forgot about the meek.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Yeah, let them go play by themselves. Well all all
- 23:35Speaker 4: of us other guys will go over here somewhere and play.
- 23:37Speaker 2: So that is so great, all right, But from the
- 23:41Speaker 2: non playing division, you agree you would win and laterly
- 23:43Speaker 2: got landslide, right, I mean, it doesn't matter, all right,
- 23:50Speaker 2: So how's the game? How are you feeling headed into
- 23:52Speaker 2: this tournam because guys getting nervous when they stop. But
- 23:54Speaker 2: like ja Billis tells me, I don't know what's like
- 23:56Speaker 2: to play in the Masters except for this weekend. And
- 23:58Speaker 2: then I get a feeling of what it's like a
- 24:00Speaker 2: golf ball because you're killing it on the tee on
- 24:02Speaker 2: the driving range, But when you get out there and
- 24:04Speaker 2: people are watching, it's a whole different thing.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Right, It's different. And you know, my son asked me,
- 24:07Speaker 4: because Dad, you're out on the football field. That doesn't
- 24:09Speaker 4: bother that. Well, I'm in my element.
- 24:10Speaker 1: Yes, you're confident there, your max confidence here.
- 24:14Speaker 4: I know we're going to be good. We're the best
- 24:16Speaker 4: in the world, just like I'm sure the golfers are
- 24:18Speaker 4: like that. Like I don't think Tiger Woods goes up
- 24:20Speaker 4: there at Rory or all those guys are like, oh
- 24:22Speaker 4: my god, someone's watching me, you know, just critiquing every
- 24:24Speaker 4: little bit of my swinging. Yes, you know they've got
- 24:26Speaker 4: elite confidence. They're in their element. They can do it.
- 24:29Speaker 4: But you know, it's it's a different dynamic for sure.
- 24:32Speaker 4: And uh, you know, the the and and truth be told.
- 24:36Speaker 4: Like I'm sure a lot of these guys. When we
- 24:37Speaker 4: go golfing with people, everyone's generous.
- 24:39Speaker 8: Like, hey, take that ten footer, coach, just night down
- 24:43Speaker 8: for a bout. Now, I got to I can't pick
- 24:47Speaker 8: this up so like, the whole thing is different.
- 24:50Speaker 1: He's not letting you pick it up.
- 24:52Speaker 4: We're not picking up nothing. But but every time I'm golfing,
- 24:56Speaker 4: it says, you know, people are generous. They give you
- 24:58Speaker 4: those five six footers, and I look at it him
- 25:00Speaker 4: like that, I'd probably make one out of Lise. And
- 25:02Speaker 4: we're gonna learn that this week.
- 25:04Speaker 2: We'll get you out of here just a second. Chris
- 25:05Speaker 2: Sims is a friend of ours. He's a friend of
- 25:07Speaker 2: the show. He's very close with Kyle shan you know
- 25:10Speaker 2: very well. Is it weird that Chris Simms has a
- 25:13Speaker 2: KS tattooed on his ankle because he's that friendly with Kyle.
- 25:16Speaker 4: I mean, Kyle has the same one.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I know. It's weird, though, you know.
- 25:19Speaker 4: What, if you love him, man, if you love anybody enough.
- 25:23Speaker 4: I mean, shoot, I'm not who might have done. Me
- 25:25Speaker 4: and Matt Lafleuur have stories about each other that I
- 25:27Speaker 4: will never tell. We don't have it on our ankles
- 25:30Speaker 4: or anything, so people will never know. But so you're
- 25:33Speaker 4: okay with I'll say, Kyle Shanahan and Chris Sims have
- 25:36Speaker 4: a friendship that's that's unique, and their bond is close.
- 25:39Speaker 4: And I think that's special. So they have tattoos on
- 25:42Speaker 4: one another.
- 25:43Speaker 1: He's such a great coach, Kyle.
- 25:45Speaker 2: What's the thing you like, the most important thing you
- 25:47Speaker 2: learned from Kyle Shanahan.
- 25:48Speaker 4: He's so good at his he is he he he
- 25:52Speaker 4: helped me a lot as a defensive coordinator, you know,
- 25:56Speaker 4: just his the way he sees the game. Yeah, and
- 25:58Speaker 4: just teaching me a lot about what they look for.
- 26:02Speaker 4: So you know, I played offense in college and then
- 26:05Speaker 4: and to have him just kind of explain how he
- 26:07Speaker 4: sees the game in the space that they're chasing really
- 26:10Speaker 4: helped me evolve as a coordinator. And just the way
- 26:12Speaker 4: he prepares his players. And look, I've just been fortunate,
- 26:16Speaker 4: you know, my entire career between Kyle Shanahan. His dad
- 26:20Speaker 4: was a big part of it for me in the
