- 0:26from the first quarter, Miller in Condon and likewise with off
- 0:31the bench. So here's what's coming up on
- 0:33our program. We will start in about 20
- 0:35minutes or thereabouts with Tom Kecker.
- 0:37He covers Iowa regular Friday guests with Trenton Eye
- 0:41hawkeyereport.com part of on three media.
- 0:44A look at the Hawks at 12:30 and they're weak.
- 0:46And what lies ahead as media day certainly do with Tom Kecker at
- 0:50the bottom of our number one. We'll give you an opportunity, 4
- 0:54of you to participate in our chicken coop giveaway.

- 0:59do so. We'll give you 4 questions and a
- 1:02tie breaker. You get the most right.
- 1:04You'll get a $50.00 gift certificate to use it.
- 1:06Any of the three chicken coop locations throughout central
- 1:10Iowa, Urbandale, West Des Moines and Ankeny, the locations there
- 1:15that's coming up here. We'll give you the cue to call
- 1:17about 45 minutes. Our number 2, Travis Hines will
- 1:20kick it off. A good hit on the Cyclones with
- 1:22Travis, both football and basketball.
- 1:25He's coming up with the ball or the top rather of the second
- 1:28hour of the show. And then we'll head to Las
- 1:30Vegas. Well, really head to Las Vegas
- 1:32in a few days. We'll do it via the telephone
- 1:34with Mike Palm, VP of Operations at Circa Sports.
- 1:38The latest is sports return. What's it been like in the book
- 1:41the last Wednesday night? Thursday night, not a lot going
- 1:46on, but we'll talk to Mike Palm about what they're seeing NFL
- 1:48and college football wise, what's moving your needle as far
- 1:51as futures, etcetera. With Mike, when he joins us at
- 1:55about 125. Trent will make some plays.
- 1:58They'll come to you at about 10 minutes before 2:00 or
- 2:01thereabouts. So we are about to embark on a
- 2:05full slate of baseball games. The long four days, almost.
- 2:09Well the Ulster game was good, a long four days essentially of
- 2:13that's it about to be behind us. Although I was into your bet
- 2:17last night on the CFL. Well done.
- 2:19Well, we went one and one they you talked me into putting that
- 2:22one on the cartoon. So we just lost the juice last
- 2:25night as we had a summer league bet that wasn't even close.
- 2:26Lost by 20 but we hit in a close game the.
- 2:30Argonauts it was. I was on 2/21 and they've got
- 2:34another game tonight. If you need a football figure,
- 2:36it's tough. I mean, I found American
- 2:40football and it's like, what if there's this crap that I've been
- 2:42spoon fed? At one point in the game, the
- 2:45score was 11 to 4. OK, yes, yeah, this is stupid.
- 2:52God, I hate the rules. But anyways, but there's going
- 2:56to be a one of our questions in the chicken coop giveaway is
- 3:00tonight's CFL affair as we inch our way to NFL into college
- 3:04football. And it is getting closer and I
- 3:06kind of hope the calendar slows down now at this point.
- 3:09Now take your time. Oh, now it's time.
- 3:11So yeah, basically from May on, you start begging for us to get
- 3:15to football season, and now you're ready to pump the brakes
- 3:17a little. Starting to mean training.
- 3:19Camps are about to open up and media days are going on and, and
- 3:23I love the month of August for what we do.
- 3:26You know, the speculation, the, the talking season for us, our
- 3:30talking season tried to, you know, figure out what's going to
- 3:32happen whenever, right? But that doesn't matter.
- 3:35We have fun with it. We.
- 3:36Do have fun with it and look forward to doing that.
- 3:39And so, yeah, go ahead and feel free to slow down, but that's
- 3:44not going to. Happen.
- 3:45That could happen. No, you have no control over
- 3:47that. SEC Media Days finishing up.
- 3:49It's what? When did they start?
- 3:51Mondays or four day affair or Tuesday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 3:54Thursday, Friday or. I think it was 4.
- 3:56I think it was just four teams each day.
- 3:57Is the way that they split it up this year one of the more boring
- 4:01SEC Media days? There has not been much that
- 4:04came out Kiffin. Was good early in the week,
- 4:07yeah. And he was like, I think he was
- 4:09day one. I think you're right, yeah.
- 4:10But other than that, yeah, really nothing.
- 4:13Right. Kirby Smart never made any news.
- 4:15No, not at all. No.
- 4:19Like, it's a good point. I never thought of it.
- 4:22Yeah. It just normally we get a lot
- 4:25of. Storylines now, one of the
- 4:26Alabama defensive lineman was asked about the Florida State
- 4:30quarterback, the Cassianos, the Boston College transfer lipping
- 4:34off and they're going to play each other.
- 4:35And he said that he, you know, had an answer to that.
- 4:38But yeah, I mean, when that's the sound bite that's getting
- 4:41the most play, you're right. It's interesting that that has
- 4:45been the case. Hopefully we'll get some news
- 4:47next week. And here's the difference.
- 4:50You have Greg Sankey out there all the time.
- 4:52He's talking, he's happy to do it.
- 4:55That is not Tony Petit. When does he?
- 4:57I mean, I know he'll speak Tuesday.
- 4:59Tuesday. You know the.
- 5:00Time I do what time is it can. We carry it.
- 5:02We can't because we have an interview scheduled with my or
- 5:05with Derek Stevens at that time. Darn.
- 5:07It, but we record it. Yes, absolutely.
- 5:09Yes, we can definitely do that and we will get that on the
- 5:11airwaves one way or the other. He and Sankey not seeing eye to
- 5:15eye absolutely when it's in particular when it comes to the.
- 5:19Well, and that's it. I mean, Sankey said we'll just
- 5:22stay at 12 and that's going to be the format if they, if the
- 5:25Big 10 in SEC cannot come to an agreement and we've been talking
- 5:28for months, foregone conclusion, it's going to be 16.
- 5:31If they do not come up with a resolution by December.
- 5:35And this is only Big 10 in SEC, they have the power, sure.
- 5:38If there is not a resolution, it will remain at 12.
- 5:41It's as simple as that. And.
- 5:42The Big 10 wants the SEC to play 9 league games.
- 5:46That is a important box to check for them.
- 5:50They've been reluctant to do so. I don't get it.
- 5:53You keep hearing about how tough it is in the SEC.
- 5:55It's eight more losses in the league.
- 5:57It's the coaches don't want it because it's eight more losses.
- 5:59It's as simple as that. The coaches don't want that.
- 6:03Here's a component, though, and I hear this all the time.
- 6:05Well, you know, the SEC is so tough and then they bring up the
- 6:08mid tier teams. You know, it's tough to go into
- 6:11South Carolina. It's tough to go to Kentucky.
- 6:13We saw Georgia struggle with a very pedestrian Kentucky team.
- 6:17Guess what? It's also very difficult to come
- 6:19to Iowa City. It's difficult to go to a good
- 6:23Illinois team. The the mid tier is the mid tier
- 6:26in every league. You can say the same thing about
- 6:28the ACC. You can say the same thing about
- 6:29the Big 10. How?
- 6:30Look at Miami last year. They're up 21, nothing against
- 6:32Syracuse and they lose that game.
- 6:33That's what league games are. The SEC middle and lower tier is
- 6:38not. Yeah, but it means more Trent.
- 6:39Appreciably better than any of these leagues out there.
- 6:43They just put it at a level to make people believe, and it's
- 6:46not true. It just isn't.
- 6:47It is another lie that the SEC puts out every single year.
- 6:51Look. At their championship, the last
- 6:53few years hasn't been there. Hasn't been there.
- 6:55They have it one. They have 6 in the playoff era.
- 6:58The Big 10 has three and Clemson has two.
- 7:01That's championships. One soon to be 3, hopefully.
- 7:04If we don't get a resolution now, here's a little.
- 7:06Maybe the most interesting nugget to me is Eli Drinkowich,
- 7:10another guy that likes to talk he wants.
- 7:12To go to 30. Well, he does want to do that,
- 7:15but he is more of a favor of the Big 10 model as opposed to the
- 7:19SEC model. It is good to see a coach
- 7:21actually talking back outside of your talking points at your.
- 7:24Company line, yes. It's good to hear somebody that
- 7:27is actually thinking about this a little bit.
- 7:29I understand that my thought process is tainted.
- 7:32As a Hawkeye fan, I get that because this is the best system
- 7:36for Iowa. But not just Iowa.
- 7:37Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue,
- 7:42Indiana, on and on and on. After the big boys of this
- 7:45conference, everybody else, they want this because it's something
- 7:50attainable, something realistic you're in to shoot for.
- 7:53Finish in the top 6 and we got a chance.
- 7:55Yep. And I agree with you and I agree
- 7:58with Petiti. We'll see where it goes because
- 8:00there's I think there's a collision coming.
- 8:02But I do want to hear from him, without a doubt.
- 8:06So. So what time do we have Derek
- 8:07Stevens on Tuesday? 1:00 our time. 1:00 our time,
- 8:10and that's when Petiti's on the stage.
- 8:12Yep. Well, we don't get it.
- 8:13Maybe Lucas, because Lucas will be broadcasting live from out.
- 8:16There, we will have it here on the Iowa Sports Radio.
- 8:18Now, good, good, good, good. And then Iowa goes on Thursday
- 8:22and you and Lucas will be live from the Mandalay Bay from Radio
- 8:27Row there, and Ference is going to stop by.
- 8:29Yes, he's going to stop by, I believe 230.
- 8:31Our time with Lucas, he'll be here.
- 8:33How about some of the players? Yes, and then the three players
- 8:36will be in in the 3:00 hour and we'll get to hear from all of
- 8:39them while that's happening. While the players are on, Kirk's
- 8:42also going to be at a different podium.
- 8:43So I'll jump over there, record that, and we'll have a lot of
- 8:46content coming out of Big 10 football media.
- 8:48Day good, look forward to it then I'll listen to it when I
- 8:52get back cuz I'm gonna bail on you on Wednesday and come home
- 8:56back. Home for you 2 days is enough. 2
- 8:59full days. You got 2 full days though.
- 9:02Two full day land Sunday afternoon 110 OK and then look,
- 9:08the reason I've said I'm not trying to pull the wool over
- 9:11anybody's eyes. I'm going early spend an extra
- 9:14day with my kids right right. So that's why I'm going and
- 9:17coming back in anyways. But I'm looking forward to it
- 9:20looking forward to being at circa little Sunday night
- 9:23baseball, little sports next week.
- 9:25We're gonna have a big gathering on Tuesday night.
- 9:27It'll be fun. Let some of the media that
- 9:28hasn't been a I had the opportunity to stop by and
- 9:32experience first hand, including our colleague Lucas Strain, the
- 9:36largest sports book in the world, with their own two eyes.
- 9:39So a couple of things that we haven't brought up.
- 9:42We're going to be signing up for the football contest out there.
- 9:44We encourage everybody to do the same. footballcontest.com,
- 9:48Maddie and Tony who we've talked about in the past, they've been
- 9:50my proxy out there. So in order to do these
- 9:52contests, just to re familiarize some people, maybe new listeners
- 9:56out there, if you're heading out this summer some point, if
- 9:59you're going out next week or any other week, you have to have
- 10:01a proxy. The proxy is the person that
- 10:03puts in your pics every week because you have to do it in
- 10:06person. That's how you put.
- 10:07You send your pics to the proxy via the Internet and they turn
- 10:11them in once they get them. So Matt and Tony.
- 10:14Tony's from Ankeny. She's and that's a Midwest guy.
- 10:17He's a Chicago guy. I've known them now for a number
- 10:20of years. Here's something though, they're
- 10:21giving back. If your entry gets knocked out
- 10:23the first three weeks for Survivor, get your entry fee,
- 10:26your proxy feedback. No kidding.
- 10:28Yes. That's good news.
- 10:29I mean, that's something to look forward to.
- 10:31Absolutely, because it's inevitably going to happen to
- 10:33both of us. So you got that compoted to it,
- 10:36but the rates are as good as anybody.
- 10:38I have used it. It is incredibly simple.
- 10:41I set my time up. I got a little alarm on my
- 10:43phone. Let me know each week need to
- 10:45have my entry and by then can either do the Friday entry or a
- 10:48Saturday entry a little bit more as you move later into the week.
- 10:51You can do it both ways, but footballcontest.com is where you
- 10:54can go to get all the information there.
- 10:56You can contact them. Hey, I'm going to be out there
- 10:59August 11th. I want to meet you at the sports
- 11:02book at 2:00 PM Boom, you're set up, they'll send you a
- 11:05confirmation e-mail. You go there, you sign out the
- 11:08paperwork, then you go up with them when you're putting your
- 11:11entry in. So it's as simple as that.
- 11:13And what other thing I'm going to do the new college football.
- 11:16Are you at the Superbook? Yeah.
- 11:18Have you been? Have you spent much time at the
- 11:20Westgate? It's been a long time.
- 11:22Yeah, it was the nuts for a while.
- 11:23Absolutely. It was.
- 11:24It was it. If people haven't heard, so
- 11:28they're for the first time in a while, there's a contest.
- 11:30South Point had one for a while. There's been a few other places.
- 11:33William Hill, Yep, William Hill, back seven and picks a week.
- 11:36That's what you make 7 picks against the spread.
- 11:38Against the spread. Lions will come out I believe on
- 11:41Wednesday for that one. But seven selections against the
- 11:43spread every week for college football, $500 entry for that
- 11:47one. So gonna jump aboard, do an
- 11:49entry on that one and have a little bit of fun.
- 11:50And you never know, right? You never know.
- 11:53And that take. A flyer.
- 11:54That's what we're all doing. And we're kind of like buying a
- 11:56lottery ticket. It's that dream.
- 11:58Although we think we have an edge because we think we know
- 11:59sports and we don't. Yeah, if you put this in the
- 12:02pudding, because we haven't made it to the month of, we haven't
- 12:05survived till the month of October.
- 12:06I didn't year one. You did you're, what, the first
- 12:09week of October? And then you were done.
- 12:11Week 5 it was over. Week 5, it was over.
- 12:13I'd look at. I'd love to see Week 5 anyways,
- 12:16one of these years, one of these years.
- 12:18So since we're talking football where we haven't spoken about
- 12:21one team, it don't tell me driving home yesterday trying
- 12:24to, you know, talk about I'm trying to wrap my mind on what I
- 12:27think I'm going to be watching unfold this season.
- 12:31Watch the end of quarterback. The series last night was really
- 12:34good and I'm and I'm more sold on the Bengals this after
- 12:37watching the series than I am. But you know who we haven't
- 12:39spoken about? A team that has, I don't think
- 12:42graced the 2 noon to two time slot on the air.
- 12:46Who's that? That's got a legitimate chance
- 12:49just the defending champs. Yeah, that's right.
- 12:53Haven't spoken about the Eagles. Yeah, that's crazy, right?
- 12:56Is it just that foregone conclusion that they're going to
- 12:59be really good again, that it's going to break and they're going
- 13:02to be there and they're such a can because it's almost
- 13:05impossible rasterized to poke a hole in that team.
- 13:07Is it their? Can't Two years ago, they lost
- 13:10Kellen Moore. OK.
- 13:13Well, last time they lost the Rosie didn't go well.
- 13:15They lost both both coordinators to be fair that.
- 13:18Season and Victoria Fangio is back.
- 13:20Because two years ago they started the year.
- 13:22Were they 8:00 and 1:00? I think they might even been
- 13:25better than that. 10 and. One, they just crashed and
- 13:28burned. They did and it, but you heard
- 13:31these kind of murmurs about them throughout the course of the
- 13:34season when it happened. I don't think it was a huge
- 13:36surprise because they're just felt like there was a lot of
- 13:39tumult inside that organization at that time.
- 13:43Now I I can't get there. I can't have the same kind of
- 13:48concern that it's going to happen and it just right back to
- 13:51they have talent. So here they here's 2023 two 455
- 13:55and 18 and 110 and one they beat on Thanksgiving weekend.
- 14:00They beat Buffalo in overtime and the next six games to end
- 14:05the regular season. They went one and five, the lone
- 14:08win being on Christmas Day against the Giants and got
- 14:11crushed in the wild card round by a Tampa Bay.
- 14:15And then last year they turned things around obviously, and win
- 14:18the whole cotton picking thing and just dominate the Kansas
- 14:21City. I mean, they dominated the
- 14:23Chiefs. Oh, absolutely that Super Bowl.
- 14:25But I don't want to say boring. It wasn't boring if, well, maybe
- 14:28you're a Chiefs fan. It was probably.
- 14:30More frustrating than boring? Probably, yeah.
- 14:35So what? Where do you poke holes?
- 14:38Wayne Johnson's back. Do you think that they're going
- 14:40to get to the Super Bowl again this year?
- 14:42Are you going to bet that they are?
- 14:44I'm not. I'm not.
- 14:45Because of the price, Yep, I can't get there.
- 14:48I can't. I'm, I don't think this looks
- 14:50like to me, a team that's going to repeat.
- 14:52The middle of the defense is outstanding.
- 14:54You know, yeah, for certain. You like the Kobe Dean?
- 14:58I do, and he was hurt last year, but you know, I really like his.
- 15:00Jalen Carter, yes, who I think is Aaron Donald Light.
- 15:05That defensive backfield stout, I mean, Cooper Jeans, your
- 15:08Nickelback. Right.
- 15:10Not a bad one. Yeah, not a bad one.
- 15:12And there feels like there's still more upside with him, the
- 15:14middle of that front with Jordan Davis and Jaylen Carter.
- 15:17Yeah, it's as good as the risk. I guess I don't love the
- 15:22defensive ends. Are they going to get to the
- 15:24quarterback a ton? But another thing that they went
- 15:27out and did. Squan Barkley, right?
- 15:29You got Saquon that that Saquon, Yeah.
- 15:31That helps. Brown Smith.
- 15:33That's a pretty good 1-2 punch. Dallas Goddard, pretty good.
- 15:37The offensive line is maybe not. No, no, they're still good.
- 15:41And they went out and they fortified it with depth.
- 15:44You know, they brought in a couple of veterans that are
- 15:45going to help out, I think, with the depth of that offensive
- 15:47line. And when you have Elaine Johnson
- 15:49at at this age? Still playing at elite level.
- 15:52Always a concern though with an older offensive lineman.
- 15:55Still, they went out and they would draft.
- 15:57A snap count every single time he gets an extra half step and
- 15:59they just let him do it. He's not alone.
- 16:01Hope. There's a few tackles that do
- 16:03the exact same thing in a drink. Kansas City, likewise.
- 16:06Yeah, absolutely. And it drives you crazy, but
- 16:08they allow it. Yep yeah, the Eagles hard to
- 16:12poke close. So what is the price?
- 16:13Do you know off the end what the?
- 16:14Price is for the Eagles. I don't because I don't shop at
- 16:17that time at that end of the of the odds board.
- 16:21I'm in the middle or the back end of it looking for prices.
- 16:23They've got to be the second choice.
- 16:25Are they six to one? 6 1/2 to one?
- 16:27This is from DraftKings. There is a three-way tie at the
- 16:30top of the Super Bowl betting board.
- 16:32All right, it's the Chiefs. Nope.
- 16:35It's not the Chiefs. It's not the Chiefs.
- 16:37It's the Bills for sure. The Eagles for sure.
- 16:43Who am I missing? The Ravens.
- 16:44It is the Ravens, all three of them, plus 650.
- 16:47The Chiefs are 8 to 1 at DraftKings Lions at 12:50 and
- 16:51then you get a big jump up to 18 to one for the Commanders. 49ers
- 16:55at 20 to 1. Any interest at all?
- 16:58I love their. Schedule.
- 16:59Yes, I love their schedule. What are they going to be
- 17:01favored in 15 games? I think that's what the the
- 17:04advance, the advance point spreads week by week are already
- 17:09out and I think they are what don't Can you trust Christian
- 17:15McCaffrey? Another healthy season for him
- 17:20because they're a completely different team when he's out
- 17:22there. Yep, They go to that apex.
- 17:24They go to that kind of team that absolutely can win a Super
- 17:28Bowl with the caveat, you know, he has to be.
- 17:30Held Brandon Iuke is an enigma. Yes.
- 17:33I like Ricky Pearsall, great story.
- 17:35George Kittle, another year older still, I think still, you
- 17:40know, upper echelon offensive line is good.
- 17:44Fred Warner is elite. Nick Bosa is really, really
- 17:48good. But they lost Greenlaw, they
- 17:51lost Tafanga. Both of those guys are wearing
- 17:53Bronco suits. Thank God Jake Moody's trust him
- 17:59to make a big kick. Not really.
- 18:02I don't that that, that whole division.
- 18:04Trent, yes. Who do you toss out?
- 18:05Seattle. I can't even toss them out
- 18:09Cardinals. No, I can't toss them.
- 18:11No, I'm not tossing the Rams. No.
- 18:14Well, that means you can get a price, right?
- 18:17I would think. Both Seattle and Arizona plus
- 18:19475. Rams plus 195.
- 18:22And the Niners are favored to win the to win the division,
- 18:24plus one of their schedule. Because of that schedule, it
- 18:27sets up incredibly well for. Them so so if the Eagles are
- 18:30going to repeat in the NFC, who's their biggest competition?
- 18:33Who's their biggest competition out there?
- 18:36I mean, I think their division might be in their own division
- 18:38might be the commanders. You love the commanders.
- 18:40I do love the command. I think Jane Dan is about to
- 18:42become. He's already a household name,
- 18:45but I think he's he's going to be talked about as one of the, I
- 18:48think best in the game very shortly.
- 18:50Maybe not this year. Obviously, the North is the
- 18:53north. There's a lot of love for Tampa
- 18:56Bay. Not in this chair.
- 18:59Not with worse hurt. Yeah, and that's a big blow.
- 19:01How long is he hurt? For about a month, you know, I
- 19:03think targeting maybe a week 5 return if if memory serves when
- 19:06that first came out, I. I'm glad Baker Baker Mayfield
- 19:09has resurrected his career. Carolina, I think is going to be
- 19:14better. Atlanta I.
- 19:18Feel like I've been burned by Atlanta.
- 19:19Right. I'm the I'm the same way.
- 19:21And New Orleans is going to try and finish with the worst record
- 19:23in the league so they can draft Arch Manning's grandson Arch to
- 19:29be their quarterback. And what a story would be.
- 19:30I kind of hope it happens. So what is it about the Lions
- 19:34that you because you've been kind of saying that you love the
- 19:36Vikings, You think the Bears got a step in them.
- 19:38I know you don't you're not in love with the Packers by any
- 19:41means, but you keep saying that the Lions you you anticipate a
- 19:44step back. Well, the.
- 19:45Only reason I do is because we saw it in Philadelphia.
- 19:48Aaron Glenn is as good a defensive mind as there is and
- 19:51Ben Johnson as good as offensive mind is there?
- 19:54I mean watching quarterback and some of the trick now, I didn't.
- 19:57I hated the one against. Against Washington in the
- 20:01divisional round where they had Williams, I think it was
- 20:04throwing the football and no business throwing.
- 20:06It cost him interception late in the football game.
- 20:10But Quince, Dilt, Dank Quinn. I I like what I see out of Jared
- 20:17Goff. I love the running back.
- 20:18I love the receiver. Jameson Williams, obviously Aman
- 20:21Ross St. Brown is is a he's a, he's a
- 20:26terrific player. He's a Pro Bowler.
- 20:27He's an All Pro. Sam LaPorte is outstanding.
- 20:30I don't like the fact that they're centre just retired.
- 20:33Ragnar just, you know, quit last month.
- 20:36But they're guys on defence, they get back.
- 20:38And they're going to start a Rooney at centre, Is he?
- 20:41Yeah, I thought. It was the guy from the the
- 20:43plate for he was with Detroit. Then he went to Denver to you
- 20:46and he washed. Oh, starts with the G, Trent.
- 20:48Oh, Giovanni Manu. No, no, no, no, no, no glass
- 20:53now. Glass now I'm I'm looking at the
- 20:56roster, I'm not even seeing it's.
- 20:58Glass now's his last name. He is projected to be the
- 21:00starting right guard. Oh, so he.
- 21:02Is and their second round pick, Tate Ratledge is projected here
- 21:06from the Orlads depth chart to be their starting center, a
- 21:11rookie second rounder. I love the right tackle, Sewell.
- 21:14Yep, Decker I, I still think they're going to be good, but I
- 21:18think you have to dock them a point or two just because they
- 21:21lose those two coordinators. Speaking of that, their
- 21:25offensive coordinator now is John Morton, who was the passing
- 21:28game coordinator for your Broncos.
- 21:30Do you remember? No, I don't.
- 21:31No, nothing. Because I mean, you've.
- 21:34Sean, how much sway did John Morton have inside that
- 21:38building? You know what, Sean, I got this.
- 21:41Probably not going to go over real well.
- 21:43So you go from that title. Passing game coordinator for the
- 21:46Broncos helps. You get gigs apparently.
- 21:49Now he was in Detroit before that, 2022, so he's got some
- 21:53background with the organization.
- 21:54I guess that would probably help.
- 21:56You know what, it kind of reminds me of when they got
- 21:58bounced last year in the divisional round after having
- 22:01the one. Crazy game that it.
- 22:02Was it was bananas. I mean, Washington's legit 1990.
- 22:07It was a 5 or 6/19/96. The team with the best record in
- 22:12the AFC was unbeatable. No one's going to beat this
- 22:16team. Broncos.
- 22:17Yeah, here comes Jacksonville. Mark Brunel, Brunel.
- 22:21And then? Keena McArdle, Keena.
- 22:24McArdle And after having that bad taste in their mouth all
- 22:27offseason, they won two straight Super Bowls.
- 22:30So that's kind of where I'm trying to equate the two.
- 22:34I said maybe this had to happen for Detroit before they are able
- 22:37to take this next step as anyways, we'll see.
- 22:40Alright, let's go to break. Ohh, gods football season.
- 22:42See slow down, slow down. Calendar time to head to KX and
- 22:48o.com Right now. You can enter this nationwide
- 22:50contest. The keyword this hour is Bills.
- 22:53Bills. It's your chance to win $1000
- 22:55bonus bucks. Contest goes this week and next.
- 22:59This hour the keyword is bills. We'll have another one.
- 23:03And then throughout the afternoon and off the bench with
- 23:05Sean and Lucas, they have as well.
- 23:08Tom Caker joins Trenton I next. Miller and Condon underway on a
- 23:12Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio.
- 23:15Tom Caker joins the program hawkeyereport.com, part of On
- 23:18Three Media. Before we do that, Soul and beef
- 23:21days going on. Tristan Werfs will not be in the
- 23:25hay Bale toss this year. I got the word.
- 23:27I got a text. Apparently this is really
- 23:29popular. Tom, have you ever covered it?
- 23:31Have not ever gone yeah, Werfs had the had this knee scoped or
- 23:37whatever. He's on the PUP list.
- 23:39So he can. Do it.
- 23:41I don't think Dunker's doing it. Keeper told me he's doing it so
- 23:47I would put him as like -400. Yeah, probably.
- 23:52All right. Maybe we need some.
- 23:54Maybe we need some odds on beef days.
- 23:57Yeah, I think we should. I'm all for it.
- 23:59That's outstanding. But pretty big event
- 24:01nonetheless. And so and good for them.
- 24:02And I think it's the first mention of them on the on KX and
- 24:06on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 24:07So get out there and have fun if you're in the area tonight and
- 24:11tomorrow. Well, Tom, lots of ground to
- 24:12cover your aside from from Solon Beef Days media day on the
- 24:17precipice as we inch our way closer.
- 24:20I I guess who's the. Team Tom, that that's on Iowa's
- 24:23schedule, that that maybe I don't know, that you gave them a
- 24:28lot, gave Iowa a win over them, that you're starting to, you
- 24:32know, get some feedback or get some pushback that, you know,
- 24:35don't overlook this or that or the other thing.
- 24:37Who would that team be, Tom? I think the most fascinating
- 24:41game on the Iowa schedule is Indiana.
- 24:46And it's just because because we just don't know.
- 24:48Is this, you know, do they kind of come turn back into Indiana
- 24:54or is this thing real? Is Sigmeti really the greatest
- 24:58coach since Newt Rockne or Dick Sabin or whoever you want to put
- 25:02him with? I mean, coach, Google me, as I
- 25:06call it. You know, he he's, he does not
- 25:10lack for bravado. He's got a quarterback.
- 25:14He's got his, you know, got Mendoza, so he's got some talent
- 25:19back. I just think that's such a
- 25:22fascinating game early in the year in the conference because
- 25:26it could honestly could set up either one of those teams to be
- 25:30in the conversation in in late November for a College Football
- 25:34Playoff. Who would have had Indiana in
- 25:37the College Football Playoff one year?
- 25:40Back-to-back years? Yeah, same group that picked
- 25:43Arizona State last, right in the Big 12, you know, nobody saw.
- 25:47Dummies in the media. Dummies in the media.
- 25:49We don't know anything. Not a thing.
- 25:51Guilty. Speaking of the beginning of the
- 25:53Big 10 slate, Week 1, it's Rutgers on the road short week
- 25:58after a night game against UMass.
- 26:00They got to go out there on a Friday night.
- 26:02Now, I was dominated this series and some decent teams also that
- 26:05I was been able to beat. Any concerns though about that
- 26:08game? Any concerns about what Schiano
- 26:09is building? Or it might be a slog, but I
- 26:12will find the way against Rutgers.
- 26:14I know that all the people at Rutgers will be all fired up
- 26:17because it's going to be a Friday night and their early
- 26:20season schedule suggests they'll be 3 and O.
- 26:23And so everybody's going to be excited out there and, you know,
- 26:27lathered up on a Friday night in New Jersey having some fun.
- 26:32But I just don't, I don't, I don't see a lot of a lot of hope
- 26:36there. Is Kelly Mannis back?
- 26:38Yes. Yeah, yeah, I think it's I, I
- 26:41think I joked in my preview there my, my, my fearless
- 26:44forecast. But it was like the the 10th
- 26:47time that I would face and Kelly.
- 26:50Seemed like. The quarterback between
- 26:52Minnesota and Rutgers, and probably not that far off, but
- 26:57yeah, he's back. But they don't have Benung Guy,
- 27:01the guy who's with the Bears. Man, the seventh round pick.
- 27:04He's gone. They think they've got some
- 27:08receivers, but lost a lot on defense is what I was told.
- 27:12So I, I, I wonder and you know, last time Iowa went up there and
- 27:17then that game they, they handled them pretty well.
- 27:20I I just think Bill Parker will dial up some defense and they'll
- 27:24create a couple turnovers and it'll be like 27 to 10 or
- 27:28something. Like last year they lost in
- 27:30conference to Nebraska, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC, and
- 27:33Illinois. Well no, they lost.
- 27:35They lost to Illinois but beat Michigan State, Minnesota,
- 27:38Maryland and Washington. So not the upper echelon of the
- 27:41conference but still finished seven and six after a loss to K
- 27:44State. So I guess my point being is
- 27:46Shianna does have them seemingly headed in the right direction.
- 27:50If if nothing else, what's the? I know your forecast has them
- 27:54losing a couple of games of the two.
- 27:58More likely that you're wrong is it's got to be the Heroes game
- 28:02right over in Lincoln against a brat because I can't see them
- 28:04beating Penn State. I just can't.
- 28:06Yeah, yeah, I Penn State is just going to be going to be rough
- 28:10and and you know, I see it's well totally win a game on the
- 28:15West Coast. It's not at a neutral site.
- 28:18It's just hard for me to, I mean, I thought they would win
- 28:21last year against UCLA that that UCLA team that wasn't any good
- 28:26and. Trying to tell you guys.
- 28:27That game, yeah, you did. You're right, you did.
- 28:30Yeah, Trent did. Trent had that.
- 28:32Sniffed that one up. I'm I'm just not going to bet
- 28:36Iowa to win. I'm not going to pick Iowa to
- 28:38win West Coast game until they do, so that's where we're going
- 28:43to be at. We don't.
- 28:44Mark Gronowski obviously is going to be the starter here.
- 28:46Hank Brown's got a lot of buzz. The transfer from Auburn,
- 28:49Jackson Stratton, we saw him last year and at least there
- 28:51were some glimpses out of him. And they got Jeremy Hecklinski
- 28:54coming in from Wake Forest. Who ultimately wins that backup
- 28:57job? Who would you anticipate?
- 28:58Gronowski, you know, tweaks an ankle week one.
- 29:01Who would be the guy that would be taking the snaps next?
- 29:05Right now I think it's Hank. I I think I think he's kind of
- 29:10in in charge that second spot, but I'm keeping an eye on his
- 29:15Glenski, you know, and I had Tim Lester on the pod and he said
- 29:21that Warren Ruggiero said that he thought he would have been a
- 29:24four year starter at Wake Forest.
- 29:26So that's Wake Forest, but still, it's just that's
- 29:31basically anointing him as a starter if he was still there.
- 29:35So that tells me the guy's got a little bit of something, but he
- 29:38just had it wasn't with him in spring.
- 29:41So it's just it would be hard for me to see him as the number
- 29:45two guy right away. But you never know.
- 29:47You just never know what what they might do.
- 29:51By the way, I you know something that we haven't really talked
- 29:54about. I did this.
- 29:55Tim's always kind of Pooh poohed the mesh, you know, the Gerald
- 30:00slow mesh stuff. He kind of brought it up and
- 30:03when we did that podcast interview that they, you know,
- 30:06it might have a little little of that in reserve.
- 30:08Sometime we may pull that out of the out of the the the back end
- 30:13of the closet there at some point, which would be kind of
- 30:16fun if they do that. Can you look kind of quizzically
- 30:21Google slow mesh? And it's basically you stand
- 30:25there with the running back for a long time before you make a
- 30:28decision if you're going to hand it off or not.
- 30:30It's something that he ran at Wake Forest.
- 30:32It is slow developing, but when it's clicking, it is almost
- 30:37impossible because, I mean, your wide receiver is getting 15
- 30:39yards down the field before you actually have to make that
- 30:42decision. A lot of faith in your own line.
- 30:44Oh, absolutely. And I think that they do.
- 30:46Well, seems like it. And it's if they're running that
- 30:48they must. Yeah, no, that that one's a new
- 30:51one to me. I can't wait to see it.
- 30:54We'll see if it does materialize.
- 30:56Basketball anymore football trend basketball from early in
- 30:59the week. Tom a take away or two from from
- 31:02the media availability. Well, I was not there at the
- 31:07availability early this week. I was on a little family jaunt.
- 31:10But I did get out yesterday, went to Chicago for some some
- 31:16recruiting. So I had to watch some some high
- 31:18school basketball. I got to see Colin Rice in
- 31:20action yesterday and, and I'll tell you what, so schools can
- 31:26have four guys out on the road at once.
- 31:29Nebraska had all four of their coaches and that included head
- 31:32coach Fred Hoyer at Colin Rice's first game.
- 31:35They when you go 4 deep, that's so they had three assistants and
- 31:44Fred watching it, watching Colin Rice, the kid from Waukee
- 31:47Northwest who's really blown up. He's a terrific player and he's
- 31:54still planning to go see Northwestern later this month
- 31:58and in Illinois, but after that, maybe a decision.
- 32:04He talked a little bit about Michigan State and UCLA trying
- 32:07to get in. They may offer.
- 32:08We'll see. But yeah, yesterday it was
- 32:12interesting because Nebraska was 4 deep Northwest, one was too
- 32:15deep. I know Ben McCollum is there
- 32:18today with assistant coach Jesse Shaw.
- 32:21Jesse was watching the game last night, so they've got yeah,
- 32:27right now I think, I think Nebraska's in the league maybe
- 32:31kind of semi comfortably, but we'll see if they can they can
- 32:34hold on to him. By the way, I'm watching the
- 32:36slow mesh right now, it's fascinating.
- 32:38It is. It's really, it's fun to watch
- 32:40you. It's.
- 32:41It's kind of hypnotic when it's gone.
- 32:43Yes, It's this. It's it's wild.
- 32:46Yeah. That's that's great.
- 32:47Hey, Speaking of basketball recruiting, the women's
- 32:50basketball program, I mean, they're going big game hunting
- 32:53here. They're going after some of the
- 32:54top prospects. Now.
- 32:55You got a Local 1 here with Jenica Lewis from Johnston, but
- 32:58they're going across the country.
- 32:59We talked about Kate Harpering, Matt Harpering's daughter when
- 33:01she came to town back during the season, Addison Bjorn from down
- 33:05in Kansas City. When the top ten players in the
- 33:07country, where are they? I mean, it feels like this
- 33:11recruiting classes, women's recruiting class is kind of slow
- 33:14right now to be committing. Any insight into the reason for
- 33:17that and what Iowa's chances are for some of these top level
- 33:19prospects? Yeah, I think they feel pretty
- 33:22good about some of the some of the players that they've got.
- 33:28I I think right now they're just waiting to kind of formulate
- 33:31who's going to be on campus this fall this week.
- 33:35Kyle Houston is over in Chicago today and tomorrow at the the
- 33:40Nike Nationals, which has the the, the big Iowa team that with
- 33:47Jennifer Lewis and everybody on that team.
- 33:49So they'll he'll get to see those those players and get some
- 33:53feedback from. So I look for a lot of content
- 33:55from Kyle on women's basketball front.
- 33:58But they're yeah, they're going big game hunting and you might
- 34:02as well try and and see what you get.
- 34:04I mean, they're as hot as they're ever going to be as a
- 34:08product. And you got to try and
- 34:10capitalize and get some of these top players.
- 34:13And I think they're going to get a couple of them.
- 34:16I really do. And then you took couple them up
- 34:19with Addie Deal and Leila Hayes and Journey Houston and you
- 34:24start building a really strong foundation not just now but or
- 34:30you know, the next four or five years.
- 34:32The brand has never been hotter and that's that's certainly
- 34:35seems like an understatement in a lot of ways.
- 34:38Hey, Tom, back to where we started and that's a big 10
- 34:40football you. I'm guessing you'll be in the
- 34:44audience for Petiti on Tuesday once he speaks.
- 34:47Fascinated to hear this because Trent and I both feel that
- 34:50there's a, there's going to be a collision, of course, between
- 34:55him and Sankey at some point. Anxious to, anxious to see how
- 34:59it turns out. And you know, Petiti's going to
- 35:01be forced to, to talk about it whether he wants to or not.
- 35:03And he hasn't wanted to up until this point.
- 35:07Yeah. And, and frankly, he has a very
- 35:11good position to to take in terms of demanding things.
- 35:16Now, I don't love, I don't like the the demanding for teams, but
- 35:23I like the position that he's taking that the SEC needs to go
- 35:26to non conference. And, and I think that is part of
- 35:31that, though, it's a financial decision for the SEC.
- 35:35All they have to do is get ESPN to say, Hey, we'll give you more
- 35:37money. And guess what?
- 35:38At 9th games happening, It's just how it's going to be.
- 35:43So it it's you know, it's always money that that drives every
- 35:48decision. And I think that's what we're
- 35:51just kind of waiting for is for them to to decide that they want
- 35:55to equal up and and go to 9 conference games and PDS.
- 36:01He is really right. But well, he's got a bad hand
- 36:04that he's playing though, because nobody likes that four
- 36:06thing. Like 4-4, whatever.
- 36:09I think the Big 12 should be all over it personally with their
- 36:11two that they would get automatic.
- 36:13But we'll see. They can still fight for that
- 36:15third. There's going to be a couple of.
- 36:17They still, they still got to decide if they want 16.
- 36:20Yeah. You know, yeah.
- 36:22That's true. Too, I, I think they have to go
- 36:24to 16. I just, you know, because you're
- 36:26going to go there anyway, at some point you might as well,
- 36:28just, you might as well just go there now.
- 36:30It's a nice round bracket and go go from there.
- 36:35Looking forward to seeing you Tuesday night at Circa, if not
- 36:38before. Tom Keikert, have have a safe
- 36:40flight out there. OK, We'll see you in Vegas.
- 36:42OK. I'll see you guys in Vegas.
- 36:43Yep, thank you. Tom Keikert, hawkeyereport.com.

- 37:35Yes. Winnipeg is a 4 1/2 point

- 37:41tonight in Winnipeg. Who do you want?
- 37:44Well, we got to go with Winnipeg.
