Christ vs. Caesar
Early Christians were executed for one simple refusal: they would not call Caesar “lord.” To them, state-controlled religion was no freedom at all it made the church a creature of the state. The issue then, as now, was lordship: Christ or Caesar?
History warns us that when the state claims authority over the church, the result is tyranny, no matter how many “rights” are promised on paper. The question that faced Speratus in A.D. 180 faces us again today:
