- 2:09Where is the
- 2:27run is 26th of the year. 6th Oletkano hit a grand slammer for Milwaukee and Alexander
- 2:34did a three run over for Cleveland. Here's the 2-1 pitch. Swing and a one hopper over
- 2:37to second. Fire has it as he throws the outfield grass and he gets him. And there's one down.
- 2:42His breath rounds out to second, 4-3. That Cleveland victory snapped a Milwaukee four-game
- 2:49winning streak. Milwaukee has gone into today's activity, six games out of first. And they
- 2:55had a chance to pick up a half a game on the idle Boston Red Sox but instead lose a half
- 3:00a game and they're now six and a half back. Hal McCrae the batter hitting 278, 13 homers,
- 3:0756 RBIs. Back from the right side, first pitch, one hopper to Kessinger. It's short. Long
- 3:12throw across, in time, two down. Two up and two down. And when Mr. Proley is on his game,
- 3:20you'll see a lot of ground balls. We've had two already here in the first inning as Pete
- 3:24Lecock steps in. Pete former Cubs playing in his first game of this series batting from
- 3:32the left side. Pete has not played because the White Sox has sent a couple of left handers
- 3:37to the mound, Ross Baumgarten and Ken Kravitz the last two nights. White hander into the
- 3:42wind up to the pitch. And it's low of all. Pete was the American League player of the
- 3:47month in the month of July. Toronto and Detroit we told you is just underway. Those are the
- 3:57only games in the American League, the two this afternoon and the two night games. Here's
- 4:01the pitch low of all. In the National League, there are four games. Pittsburgh and Atlanta,
- 4:08St. Louis and Cincinnati we gave you the probables. Later tonight, New York will be
- 4:12at San Diego and Philadelphia out at Los Angeles. The Cubs are idle. Here's the 2-0 pitch. Swing
- 4:19and a foul tip at the feet of the catcher. The Cubs will be opening up the series at
- 4:23Cincinnati. They've now lost three in a row and five in their last six ballgames. Kansas
- 4:31City Royals leading the American League West by one percentage point. As California won
- 4:37last night, defeating the Yankees six to three. Right hander ready, the 2-1 pitch, swing and
- 4:43a face tip to the left. Got a hold of the pitch on the outside part of the play to the left
- 4:47hander. Single between short and third. And the Royals have a runner at first with two
- 4:54outs. Both, despite the fact the White Sox beat Kansas City last night, both the Royals
- 5:01have a runner. And California been playing fairly evenly. Kansas City won three of their
- 5:07last four and California's won four of their last five. See how many games the Royals have
- 5:13left with California. If any. Yep, they've got something up in September. Now college
- 5:21city, 285 homers, 53 RBI, as I believe we told you. And the first pitch of the breaking
- 5:27ball low, ball one. And it was all through inside. See here in the month of August, the
- 5:35Royals will play Texas three over the weekend in Kansas City. Then the White Sox will go
- 5:40into Kansas City for three. Here's the pitch swinging on this. In September, the Royals
- 5:46are out in California for four games. And then California goes to Kansas City for three.
- 5:53That's seven games in a period of about 10 days that they play each other from the eighth
- 5:58of September to the 17th. Those will be big series. One ball and a strike. Right handed
- 6:14delivers. Here's the pitch swinging a foul. So he's ahead of them one and two. The three
- 6:21games that the Royals have left with Texas and the three with the White Sox are their
- 6:25final games. I guess those two clubs this year. White Sox will play against the Eastern
- 6:36Division with three games this weekend against Cleveland. Right handed ready. Here's the
- 6:42one two pitch. Swinging the grounder to second base hit. Lacock stopped the second as Washington
- 6:49charges the ball with a right handed hitter up fire with played way over. But Collins
- 6:56goes to the opposite field singles. Lacock holding up the second. Both of the hits by
- 7:05Lacock and by Collins have been on pitches about waist high on the outside part of the
- 7:09plate. But they just slapped the opposite field. Now the batter is Darrell Porter, the
- 7:14catcher hitting 279 homers and 55 RBI. The Royals have not completed play against the
- 7:21East. They have three more with Detroit. But the White Sox have very little success with
- 7:29Kansas City has played them about even. The big thing about the Royals, they have a lot
- 7:36of home games. 16 of their last 21 will be at home against the likes of. Well they got
- 7:45Milwaukee too. That's late. They've got Milwaukee, they've got Minnesota, Seattle, Oakland, California.
- 7:53Here's the pitch swinging the grounder to second. Fire to his right. Has it flipped
- 7:56to the shortstop for the fourth out at second. And Matt retires the side as Collins is forced
- 8:02out. In the inning, no runs, two hits, no errors, two men left down. So at the end of
- 8:07a half inning of play here at Tavisky Park, the Chicago White Sox coming to bat at the
- 8:11bottom of the first. There's no score. Takes them on and begins his warmup thoughts as
- 8:16they face Ralph Yard, Don Kessinger, and Mike Swyers. Swidor making his 31st appearance
- 8:24of the year and his 30th start. This will be his fourth start against the White Sox.
- 8:30They got credit for a 13 to 2 Kansas City victory against the Sox in Kansas City on
- 8:35the 4th of June. But then he got hammered here, 11 to nothing in the second game of
- 8:41a double hitter on June the 18th. But then he came right back in Kansas City on the 8th
- 8:47of August and won 10 to 4. So whenever he has faced the White Sox, there's been a lot
- 8:52of scoring in the three games that he has pitched. 15 runs were scored in one game,
- 9:0011 in another, all by the White Sox, and 14 in another. And the first pitch to Ralph Gar
- 9:13is fouled off, Ralph hitting 281, three homers, 27 RBIs. Kansas City pitchers in the last
- 9:20five games have gone the distance three times. They've been getting some good efforts out
- 9:27of their starters. Here's the pitch high and inside of all. Swidor has an earned run average
- 9:32of four against the White Sox this year. In 18 innings, he's allowed eight earned runs.
- 9:37Here's the 1-1 pitch way inside of all, backs him off. He's 2-1 against the White Sox this
- 9:43year, 17 and 11 against the White Sox throughout his career. He did not have a record against
- 9:50them last year. Here's the pitch, swidor up live all the left. Clint Hurdle playing near
- 9:57the line is there and he's got it in fair territory. And there's one down. And the batter
- 10:03will be switch hitting shortstop Don Kessinger, hitting 266 with a homer and 25 RBIs. Defensively
- 10:13for Kansas City, Pete LeCocque is at first, Frank White at second, Freddy Potek at short,
- 10:18and George Bledis at third with Darrell Porter doing the catching. Clint Hurdle in left field,
- 10:24Amos Otis in center and Al Collins in right. Kessinger batting from the right side against
- 10:32Swidor. White Sox have won six, lost five against the Royals. This is the rubber match
- 10:37not only of this series and the first pitch is a strike. As the White Sox won last night
- 10:43after the Royals won on Tuesday night, but it is also the rubber match of the season series
- 10:48here at Comiskey Park. Here's the pitch. Sox having one three and the Royals having one
- 10:52three and the pitch was high of all.
- 11:00Split or delivers the one one delivery, swing and a looper to right, it might drop, it will,
- 11:03a face hit. Kessinger goes to the opposite field with a single and the White Sox have
- 11:09a runner at first with one out. Swidor with an earned run average of three point three
- 11:15two. He has struck out fifty eight in two hundred and three innings and walked thirty
- 11:21nine. Second high on the club and home runs allowed seventeen. Dennis Leonard has given
- 11:27up twenty three.
- 11:29So the batter is Mike Squires. Youngster has hit successfully in nine of his last eleven
- 11:36ballgames, hitting three fifty nine with seven RBI's and he swings at a big breaking pitch
- 11:42and misses. Strike one. Toronto and Detroit, no score at the end of one. It's the only
- 11:50other game in the American League going on right now. Left hander ready, here's the pitch.
- 11:57Slider misses outside, evens it up one and one. Outfield. Playing Squires almost straight
- 12:13away. Center fielder shaded just a hair in the right center. Here's the pitch fastball
- 12:16swing and a miss. They got Kessinger off the bag, a throw to first, he is out. Kessinger
- 12:22was caught halfway between first and second. Tony LaRusso arguing with Brett Koss, the
- 12:28umpire at first, Kessinger did not argue. And he is out two to three as he was picked
- 12:38off. Apparently the hit and run was on and Kessinger stopped when Squires missed. So
- 12:49he is picked off two to three. Left hander ready, here's the one two pitch outside of
- 12:56all. Here's the two two delivery, swing and a miss, struck him off, the inning is over.
- 13:10No runs, one hit, one man left on. With the end of one complete inning of play here at
- 13:16Kamiski Park, Whiteside, coming royal something. Warren Brown back at Kamiski Park, no Kessinger
- 13:21was caught coming back to first, it goes down as it caught stealing. They're keeping score
- 13:28with us as he was thrown out from Porter to LeCocque. Clint Hurdle will lead it off for
- 13:35Kansas City here in the second inning, no score in the ball game. He'll be followed
- 13:39by Amos Otis and Freddie Potten. Our greetings tonight to George Makris of Peril Hicks Chevrolet.
- 13:47George is our Chevrolet salesman of the day. Francis Enderman and the gang from Consolidated
- 13:55Freightways up in the sky box tonight. And Jim DeLong and friends in one of the bull
- 14:05friends along with John Seward and friends in the other bull friend tonight. Hurdle left
- 14:13handed hitting rookie outfielder hitting 269, 6 homers, 53 RBIs, goes after the first pitch,
- 14:19wants the fly ball deep to right field, curving, curving it is a foul ball. He got a hold of
- 14:32it, a fully pitch, came within about five feet of hitting that foul pole down there
- 14:37and there's one strike in the batter. Well former cup Paul Rushell, going to start against
- 14:45the White Sox in this next series against Cleveland. Here's the pitch and it's a strike.
- 14:56Rushell started the other night, did a good job but the Indians lost the ball game. He'll
- 15:01be making his second American League start this weekend. Here's a swing and a grounder
- 15:04foul to the right side. Indians will be in here tomorrow night. Francisco Barrios goes
- 15:09against our old nemesis Rick Waits. Saturday Steve Stone will take on David Clyde and Sunday
- 15:16Ross Baumgarten in an afternoon game will be going against Paul Rushell. It'll be the
- 15:20second straight game. Here's the two strike pitch inside of all the second straight game
- 15:24that Baumgarten goes against a fellow Illinoisan. He was matched up against Joliet Larry Gura
- 15:32the other night and Paul Rushell, camp point product, will be pitching against him on Sunday.
- 15:39Right hander ready, here's the pitch, swing and a grounder foul. Over at first Squires
- 15:44has it, Steve Moroes doing the coaching at first for Kansas City. Chuck Hiller over at
- 15:50third, his dad is here tonight in Johnsburg, Illinois, a lot of his friends and relatives.
- 15:55A ball and two strikes. Hurdle with the number nine on his back, crouches in the box, stands
- 16:03way back in it. Here's the pitch outside of all. Ted Henry doing the up-hiring behind
- 16:09home plate. Probably a little upset, I think he thought he had the corner on that pitch.
- 16:15Henry is only to be worked at inning and his shirt is practically completely soaked. Here's
- 16:22the two-two delivery. Low inside of all, three and two. Greg Kosk up-hiring down at first,
- 16:30Jerry Newdecker at second, and George Maloney at third. This is the rubber game of the three
- 16:37game set and the rubber game of the series between these two at Comiskey Park. One and
- 16:43two, one and one in this series, three and three for the year here. Here's the pitch
- 16:45swinging a fly ball to left. Ralph Gahr comes running in. He's there and he takes it and
- 16:51there's one out. So there's one down and Amos Otis the batter, inning 266, 15 homers, 62
- 16:59BIs. Curly did a fine job in his last outing. He went the distance, defeating Cleveland
- 17:167-1, tossing an eight-hitter. Made that fine outing, you may recall, against Boston where
- 17:25he beat them in Fenway Park, four to two. Here's a swing and a miss on the first pitch. But
- 17:29then his second start was against Kansas City at Kansas City. He hadn't pitched in about
- 17:34eight or nine days and he got whopped pretty good at four innings and he absorbed a 10-4
- 17:42beating by the Royals. So this is his chance to even it up against Kansas City. Took the
- 17:52rise back that time and patted his right wrist and forearm with him, indication that he's
- 18:01perspiring out there pretty good. Doesn't want to get any moisture on that ball to slip.
- 18:05Here's a swing and a base hit to right. Foddle Washington comes over, has it on a couple
- 18:09of hops and gets it back into the infield quickly. As Otis goes to the opposite field,
- 18:15singling to right. All three hits that the Royals have had here tonight, they've all
- 18:19gone the other way on Proley. They haven't tried to pull him. But Brett McCrae grounded
- 18:27out pulling him in the first inning. Porter pulled in and forced the man out. Hurdle hit
- 18:35the other way against him and now Otis hitting the other way against him. So Hurdle's ball
- 18:40was a put out by Gar. Freddie Potpeck the batter, here's the pitch to him and it's
- 18:45slow of all. Potpeck hitting 270, a homer and 40 RVIs. A hot and humid night in Chicago.
- 18:55Winds coming out of the southwest going from home plate to center field. Breeze of about
- 19:00eight miles an hour. Proley tosses over to first runner back. White Sox went over the
- 19:081,300,000 mark here last night. 1,300,000. Stank corrected, 1,300,000 plus. Come out
- 19:19of the ballpark this year, really a tribute to the Chicago White Sox fans. Here's the
- 19:25pitch of strike. You know the White Sox despite the fact they're 20 games under 500 have out
- 19:30drawn the Cubs this year. I'm not trying to put down the Cubs and their fans by saying
- 19:34that but just an indication how great and loyal the White Sox fans have been. 1,304,843
- 19:42and still about 15 more home games to go including tonight. Proley tossed over to first and Otis
- 19:50is back. Amos with the lead. Right hander ready. There he goes, he stops. Here's the
- 20:00pitch high and inside, backs him off. Two and one. Otis made a break and then stopped.
- 20:07Amos has stolen 22 bases this year. He's been thrown out only five times. Pottec who's generally
- 20:13been the leader on this club. Half the plate here is stolen 33. Their leader is the rookie,
- 20:19Willie Wilson, 35 stolen bases. Two balls and a strike. Runner at first, one out, we're
- 20:33in the second, no score. Right hander ready. Runner not going, here's the pitch, swinging
- 20:43the grounder to short. Kessinger has it on behalf, goes to second for one, the relay,
- 20:47running time. They get the front man, six to four. Otis came in pretty good. Fire got
- 20:53it away but his throw was the outfield side of first and Pottec is on with a fielder's
- 20:57choice. So he may be going here. He's got as I mentioned 35 stolen bases. Frank White
- 21:03for that. He's pretty good contact this year. He's hitting 274, four homers and 35 RBI.
- 21:16You talk about a fellow progressing with each year. It has been Frank White. He is one of
- 21:25the premier second baseman now in the American League. First saw him in 73 for a while when
- 21:32he was at Omaha, a little better in 74. Early out of the stretch, first pitch to White,
- 21:43a pitch out, runner not going. He was up with Kansas City for a little bit in 73. He hit
- 21:54221 for the Royals in 74, 250 at 75. Then he had a slump in 76, hit 229. He came back
- 22:02to hit 245 last year now, hitting a 274. Swing and a miss and all that time. His defense
- 22:08is continually improved. Though his batting average fluctuated, his RBI production improved
- 22:19every year from 5 to 18 to 36 to 46 to 50. Down a little bit this year at 35 with a little
- 22:28over a month to go in the season. He's been hurt a couple of times. Here's a swing and
- 22:31a base hit to White. Goes to the opposite field. Pottec holds up at second. Every hit
- 22:36here tonight, two in the first and two here in the second, have been on opposite field
- 22:41singles. So the Royals have runners at first and second with two out at George Brett-DeBattery
- 22:49grounded out to second his first time up. The reason we make a point of these opposite
- 22:54field singles is the fact to show you what these guys are thinking when they go up there,
- 23:04the majority of them. This is one thing that I don't know if they get enough credit for
- 23:09is that hitting-wise, they've got a good defense, they've got good pitching. Their hitters know
- 23:16what they're doing every time they get up there. Here's the pitch. Swing and a grounder
- 23:20to first. Brett pulled it and Crowley takes the putout. Every time they have pulled the
- 23:25ball in the infield, they've grounded out. Every time they've gotten a hit, they've gone
- 23:30the other way with it. Brett pulling that ball, he still has that bone problem in his
- 23:35right hand. And Matt retires the side. In the inning, no runs, two hits and two men
- 23:42left on. So we go to the bottom of the second. Kansas City nothing, the White Sox nothing.
- 23:46Warren Brown back at Kavisky Park. Lamar Johnson leads it off and he hits the first ball, Splendor
- 23:53pitch for a strike. Here's the next delivery and it's inside of all. Lamar hitting 271,
- 23:58eight homers and 57 RBIs. That's high in the club. Meaning the RBIs. Here's the 1-1 pitch.
- 24:08Foul back upstairs. You're in tune with WMAQ Radio, Chicago, Illinois. Turado scored a
- 24:15run in the second with the Tigers came back with one in the bottom half of their frame.
- 24:21Tied it up, 1-1. Pirates at Atlanta, no score. That game in the bottom of the fourth. Here's
- 24:25the pitch up high above. Pirates right now, the hottest team in baseball. Nine straight
- 24:31victories. They gained seven games in the last 11 days. Here's a swing and a miss on
- 24:37the Philadelphia Phillies. So that's the second straight strikeout for Splendor. For the batter
- 24:47is Eric Soderholm. Soderholm hitting 251, 16 homers and 46 RBIs. Left-hander ready. Here's
- 24:59the pitch. Swing and a grounder to the left side foul. Paul Splendor went to Quincy College
- 25:08first two years then transferred to Morningside in Iowa over at Sioux City after going to
- 25:14high school in Arlington Heights. He's had great success against the White Sox over the
- 25:19years. Here's the one strike delivery and it's up high of all. The Spectal left-hander,
- 25:27real gentleman in the first degree. Here's the 1-1 pitch. Swing and a pop-up on the right
- 25:34side. Pete LeCocque backs up. In fair territory, the first baseman takes it. Had there two
- 25:39down. Soderholm was honored by the Chicago Chapter of the Baseball Writers of America
- 25:48this last winter at their banquet. I think the name of the award that he was given. Let's
- 25:59check it out for you. Mike Colbert the batter, nobody on it, two out. Mike getting 269, no
- 26:07homers and nine RBIs. Here's the pitcher, the swing and a shot to Leith's left centerfield.
- 26:12Holt is going back near the warning track and he's got it right at the edge of the warning
- 26:16track, an extreme left centerfield. That's been the best ball hit tonight by either club
- 26:22and it goes as a long out. So it's three up and three down in the second. At the end of
- 26:27two, the White Sox nothing, Kansas City nothing. Lauren Brown back at Comiskey Park as we go
- 26:32to the third inning. Mike Crowley will face the number two, three and four hitters for
- 26:38the Royals. Speaking about that award that was given Paul Splendorf by the Chicago Baseball
- 26:44Writers, it was the Ken Hubs Award for meritorious service and conduct on and off the field.
- 26:49So it's sort of like the, I guess you'd call it the Lady Bing Award in hockey, the gentleman's
- 26:56award. Also you have to have credentials on the field as well as off. In other words,
- 27:04you've got to be a winner in both areas and he certainly is. All right, Hal McCray will
- 27:10lead it off, the designated hitter. He'll be followed by Pete LeCocque and Al Collins.
- 27:14The Royals have gotten four hits off of Crowley, two in each inning. Hal McCray grounded out
- 27:29to short his first time up. Jim Gallagheri from Palookas here tonight. A bunch of fellows
- 27:38from Joliet along with him. Jim Oberwarchman, Bob Robinson, Jim Wermer, Herb Poler, Warren
- 27:45Koverec and Jim Rolfe. Here's the pitch and it's a strike. Outfield playing him fairly
- 27:54straight away. Spencer in center shading just a little in left center. Right hander ready,
- 28:00here's the one strike pitch. There's a swing and a shot to right and second base has got
- 28:05him. What a play by Breyer going to his right. The bat split in half. One piece went out
- 28:12to Satterhove. The ball is to the right of second. Breyer got it about two or three steps
- 28:20in the outfield grass and then he threw him out. Well, they don't have to saw that bat
- 28:25and they have to find out if there's any cork in it or not. Which they did yesterday, you
- 28:31know, and there wasn't a trace of cork in the grave bat. He's either had a good streak
- 28:37or been in a slump without cork, but that time split it right in half. Here's the swing
- 28:42and a grounder in the first pitch by Lecoque to Breyer at second. Throws him out. Greg
- 28:46going to his left this time getting down the outfield grass. So two up and two down. Al
- 28:56Collins the batter. Singles his last time up as had Lecoque. So probably trying to retire
- 29:02the side in order for the first time tonight. Danny wants you to check with the weather,
- 29:13see what the humidity is. Temperature. It's a pretty hot night. The wind's out of the
- 29:18south west. Expecting rain tonight. Here's the pitch inside of all the call. Stocks lines
- 29:27are open right now. White Sox will be tomorrow night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon
- 29:36against Cleveland. Here's the one open swing and a miss. So the county even got one and
- 29:47a half. Only into the wind up. Here's the pitch. Swing and a chopper to short. Pessinger charges
- 29:59has it up around the letter. He just got it up around the letters as that ball took a
- 30:08final high up to him. And it's three up and three down. The first time tonight. Slowly
- 30:13retires the side in order. We go to the bottom of the third. The White Sox nothing. Kansas
- 30:18City nothing. Mark Brown back at Comiskey Park as we go to the third inning. The White
- 30:29Sox pitching staff now has shut out Kansas City for 17 consecutive innings. Claudio Washington,
- 30:52who got the game winning hit out here last night, will lead it off against Paul Splittorff.
- 30:57Tomorrow night is back to school night. The first 15,000 school kids getting into the
- 31:03ballpark will get school kids. Pencils, books, pens, etc. Splittorff goes in the line up
- 31:17and the pitch to Claudio is low of all. Claudio had half the White Sox tips out here last
- 31:22night, going three for four and driving in two runs in that eighth inning, getting the
- 31:27game winning hit. Left hander ready. Here's the pitcher, the swing and a foul out of play.
- 31:33Ken Griffey has just got a two run homer off of Pete Bukovic. His eighth of the year in
- 31:41the third and the Cardinals are leading Cincinnati four to two. Kansas City, or rather Cincinnati,
- 31:48is still batting. Here's the pitch outside of all, three and one. Pirates Atlanta, no
- 31:54score at the end of five. Claudio leading it off, he followed by Jim Spencer and Greg
- 32:02Fier. Here's the swing and a grounder to second. White to his left has it and he throws him
- 32:07out. And there's one out here in the third. White Sox have had only one hit off of Splittorff.
- 32:14Splittorff, the first player originally signed by Kansas City, delivers to Spencer, swinging
- 32:34a grounder. Popek has it, a short. He just did get Spencer. Red had cut in front of him,
- 32:39couldn't get the ball. Thought maybe that might bother Popek a little bit, but it didn't
- 32:44as the veteran shortstop threw him out. So two up and two down. Spencer hitting two eighteen
- 32:49with four RBIs. And the batter is Greg Fier. Fier, with nobody on and two out last night,
- 32:55triggered that three run rally in the eighth inning when he singles. Splittorff originally
- 33:10signed on October 24th, 1969 with the Royals made his first appearance in September of
- 33:19the following year after being at Omaha where he won twelve games. Here's the pitch and
- 33:25it's low of all. He was signed by the Royals that went to Corning in 68, Omaha in 69 and
- 33:3270 with the Royals in part of 70. Back to Omaha in 71. Here's the pitch and it's low,
- 33:38came up in 71 with the Royals from Omaha and has been in the big leagues ever since. His
- 33:43finest year was 73 when he won twenty, lost eleven, completed twelve games. Here's the
- 33:49pitchers are swinging the grounder to short. Popek has it. Twos in time and it's a three
- 33:54up and three down inning again here in the third. So, Splittorff has retired seven in
- 33:59a row. He's faced a minimum nine hitters of the first three innings. We're at the end
- 34:03of three. I'm Lauren Brown. Harry Terry and Jimmy Pearsall will be along in a minute.
- 34:06It's the White Sox. Nothing to the Royals. Nothing. Hello again everybody. Harry Terry
- 34:11and Jimmy Pearsall. We're going now into the top of the fourth of the honey of a ballgame
- 34:18of pitching to them. Nothing, nothing. Now Porter's going to be leading it off. We've
- 34:27got about 12,000 people or so here. The White Sox are over to 1,300,000 Mark. Cleveland
- 34:37Indians will be here tomorrow night. How about school? Back to school, huh Harry? Oh, I
- 34:45wish it was. I'm going to give out some things that will help you get started. The first
- 34:5115,000 youngsters come into the park tomorrow night with some equipment to help start school
- 34:56off, right? Well, I'd like to be going back to school right now and know what I know now.
- 35:01I don't think I've had as much fun. Oh, I don't know about that. Here's Porter. You
- 35:18know, today Jimmy swings and he bounce off the first pitch. Today everybody's out blowing.
- 35:23There you go again. You know, we used to have to sell newspapers and scrub and try to make
- 35:29money off of it. How many papers did you have? I had a big one right next to a factory. There's
- 35:40a strike call. I sold papers in front of the church every Sunday morning and delivered
- 35:44100. Then I had a paper route in the morning and a paper route at night. I used to make
- 35:48$32 a week. Oh, I used to make more than that. I used to tell the people who worked at the
- 35:54church, if you say they'd buy papers from me, they might have trouble. You were lucky
- 35:59to go to school. Two strikes on a ball. I used to get mad on Sunday papers though, Harry.
- 36:05They were too heavy. The other place was delivering papers early. What? Really? Really?
- 36:11Holding a 50-ounce record. 50-ounce record. I got the concert tour. Oh, I didn't know
- 36:15they could be cut. You were with the man? As soon as I went bad, I forgot everything.
- 36:22Two strikes on a ball. Tigers leading Toronto 4-1 on the fourth. Texas beat Minnesota on
- 36:35a three-run homer by the Galesburg Black. Jim Sunberg. Cleveland nose-outs. Milwaukee
- 36:489-8. I'm also going to pitch about five and a half games behind too. They really come
- 36:52a long way, I think. They'll beat today. There's the pitch. Went on way back. Might be out
- 36:58of here. Could be high into the upper deck. That was an off-speed pitch and Porter waited
- 37:05for it. Looks like he knew what was going to come. And boy, he really felt it. That's
- 37:12the steepest home run I've ever seen here in the right field stand. Better than halfway
- 37:18up into the upper deck. Well, that's his tenth home run of the year. And he's come a long
- 37:24way since he played for Milwaukee. He had a lifetime batting average of about 2.18. And
- 37:28now he's come over here with Cali Lau. And he's very happy too because he calls his own
- 37:32ball game. He feels like he's the leader. One night off right now, here's Clint Hurdle.
- 37:38Mike Broly has allowed five hits, one run. Thanks, Bobby. There's the line drive foul.
- 37:46And to the right field corner. One strike and nothing. Bob Birtucci who handles a bar
- 38:01in the bar room. I tell you what, he's a charming looking man. Just gave us a cold can of frozen
- 38:07beer. He can't be too bad. Here's the pitch strike call. Two strikes and nothing. A home
- 38:17run by Darrell Porter leading off the fourth inning. And boy, Mike Broly was really unhappy.
- 38:22He picked up a handful of dirt and threw it down to the ground. He knew he had made a
- 38:26bad pitch. Here's the pitch a little inside. Colburn asked for an appeal to the third base
- 38:35up by George Maloney. But he said no, he did not swing. Saint Louis four, Cincinnati three
- 38:42in the bottom of the fourth. Ball game one to nothing. Here's the wind, the pitch. High
- 38:58pop fly ought to be caught. Garza waiting in the take. Harry Broly best pitches that
- 39:05Hart's thinking he's throwing tonight. He's throwing hard. I've seen him throw all year.
- 39:08When they hit him, it's been on that slow breaking stuff. So there's one away, one in.
- 39:16Amos Odo's a hitter. The White Sox have already attracted 1,304,843. This is a great game.
- 39:27This is the sixth best attendance mark for a year in the club's history. There's a put
- 39:38swing on by Amos Odo's right to the center fielder Spencer, a line drive. That ball sort
- 39:44of fooled Spencer a little bit, but he got him all right. So after Porter let off with
- 39:50a terrifically hit a home run. Hurdle a notice of an easy outs and here's Freddie Pata. I
- 39:58think we ought to check his best as far as to get that ball for cork. He corked it out
- 40:03of here. Or else check the ball for the rabbit. There's a fast ball open low ball one. Boy,
- 40:13he's a real, he's a scusted Harry. I hit that ball as hard as I could hit it and it just
- 40:17wouldn't go anywhere. These guys hit that rabbit. See one ball, no strikes. There's
- 40:25a strike call. Having watched you play tennis, I know what you're talking about. You say
- 40:34my well, it's all in good fun. You can fill out of your head. You can slap me. That is
- 40:41the person. Try to the funny pull back. They appealed to the first base up by and he says
- 40:48no. Greg cost is the first base up by Jerry New Decker. The second base up by George
- 40:54Maloney. The third base up by and Pat Henry behind the play. He didn't go after it. Look
- 41:01like it pulled back. Hi Millie. Remember the Don Kessinger night Friday night, September
- 41:11the 8th. I know a lot of you Cub fans, there's a ground ball hit for the shortstop. Kessinger
- 41:17throws them out. One run, one hit. No air, nobody left. We go now to the bottom of the
- 41:25fourth one to nothing Kansas City. I bet that you too have noticed how much you like beer
- 41:36commercials. Everybody claiming to find the most expensive ingredients, the best tech
- 41:41mates, etc. Who really cares? Me, I go by the taste alone. Does it taste good? That's
- 41:50what I'm here. I bet you that way too. And if so, you have to admit that Stro's beer
- 41:56tastes good. Maybe it is the unique fire brewing that does it all. I know you're a real beer
- 42:02lover. You'll love Stro's. There's a good cigar. Line drive into the corner. Face it.
- 42:09It's on his way to second. Take off for three. Here's the ball. Face. Guy hits the first
- 42:24hit. Into the right field, Carter. They're claiming I think they're going to appeal to
- 42:30the miss. First base. Look to me like you step right in the middle of the bat. I'll tell
- 42:35you one thing, that sure hunkled a triple on that ball. And it sure wasn't even close
- 42:40to him. And now Carter, he goes. Oh, he's all right. I thought something had happened
- 42:46the way he was talking to Bobby Knapp, but he's got a good triple. So the time he runs
- 42:51is up. He's got a good base. Nobody else. Here's Kessinger now. Kessinger lined his
- 43:05single right his first time up. Here's Paul's foot dog. Is he ready? He's up there. Swung
- 43:12on down the right field line. Coming over is Cowan for makes and catch. Gaw holds up
- 43:21the third. More of the third one. Way up the line. One out. I think Harry, why Gaw has
- 43:30held up on that plate. There's nobody out. But it would have been a tough throw for Cowan
- 43:34because he's off balance. And with the speed of Gaw, if I was Gaw, I would have tried.
- 43:38But I guess he figured with nobody out, it was a tough chance. But Cardinal's lead,
- 43:46Cincinnati, four to three on the floor. Pittsburgh and Atlanta, those score at the end of sixth.
- 43:53This squire, now he's sanded his first time up. He has bailed in. Fast ball high outside.
- 44:00Ball one. Wasn't kind of unusual. They were playing back at shortstop for Kessinger that
- 44:04time. Give him the run. Now the stretch by splits off the fence. Right down the middle
- 44:13of fast ball for a strike dog. No ball in the strike. Now the stretch can bail in. Here's
- 44:27the fence. Swings and fouls him. He had a good touch. A good base runner right now is
- 44:33thinking on third. He's going to go on a ground ball, especially if it hits slowly. But if
- 44:37he sees a throw, beats him to the plate. He stops and he gets in a run draw for the guy
- 44:42to hit the ball and get the second. So he's got to be doing a lot of thinking. He's got
- 44:45to be alert because there's no chance of changing his mind. Two strikes on the ball. High,
- 44:51pop foul. Into the left-hand corner. Out of play. Bomb off. Even if Pertle could catch
- 44:58that ball, the odds were he shouldn't because he couldn't have made a play. He's got to
- 45:03depend on sputoff to strike Squires out in this situation because he did not throw him
- 45:07out. Sputoff is 1.15, lost tenth. Turn around average 3.32. Out of the sign. In field is
- 45:26the delivery. Stuck him out on the outside corner. Squires called out on strike. That's
- 45:35good fuldom. He thought it was wide. Looked like a back step and bumped the outside corner.
- 45:40Absolutely right, Harry. It looked to me like he turned it over and started it outside about
- 45:44that foot and it broke on the outside corner. Here's a tough pitch to take. So they're two
- 45:50strikes out. Now the infield drops back to normal position. You know, last night Kansas
- 45:58City had the same chance when Otis tripled and then he struck out three in a row. Gravick.
- 46:03So now it's Sputoff trying to get out of the same situation. Here's Lamar Johnson. Here's
- 46:09the stretch of pitch. Turn outside. Frank White plays Lamar Johnson right up the middle.
- 46:17And LeCocque plays almost in the second baseman position. Now the stretch of pitch. Swung
- 46:25him out. He struck Lamar out the first time on a changeup. First pitch was a breaking ball
- 46:32changeup but that time he threw him a high fastball and Lamar chased so he's got him
- 46:35looking for that slow stuff making his fastball much quicker. Here's the pitch. A little bit
- 46:41inside a fastball. Ball two. Two balls and a strike. Pittsburgh batting in the seventh
- 46:48of Atlanta. No score. Now the stretch of pitch. Turn ball low. Ball three. Sadder home would
- 46:58be up there next. Play balls and a strike. Here's the pitch. Watch him. Sorry the last
- 47:15eight out of nine games we've got pretty good pitching. That one game we were out of in
- 47:20Cleveland. The last game we were there we got beaten ten to one percent. We've had our
- 47:26troubles we've had a pretty good streak there. So the pitching seems to be improving more
- 47:29so than the clutch hitting. But we did get it from Washington last night. This sadder
- 47:35homie pops up. His last home run was August the third. Now Sputak is ready. Here's the
- 47:51pitch. Fastball. One ball no strike. Mike Coburn to be up there next. But there's two
- 48:02outs so something's got to happen here. The pitch. Hey he slices it into right field.
- 48:09Another man to burn. We got a break on that throw from Collins and he goes his second
- 48:22and gets sadder home. But a slow runner like Gunsley who just got to the bag he has sadder
- 48:26home by plenty but he threw towards the plate which is the play. But you're playing baseball
- 48:30to keep that run from starting. So now we got runners on second and third. Two outs
- 48:39and Coburn to enter. So it'll look like a streaming line drive at the box car. Sadder
- 48:45home was jammed. He hit the ball off his fist. Had looped in the chart right field. Scoring
- 48:51guard. Johnson going to third. Sadder home pulling up in second. What a double to his
- 49:00credit. And here's Coburn who's five deep. His first time up. Here's the stretch to pitch.
- 49:08Slow curve low inside ball one. Boy we got a I don't know how hot it is out on the field
- 49:15but it's murder up here in the booth. I'll go along with that coach. One one five. Here's
- 49:24the stretch to pitch. Off feed outside. Boy I got a feeling Coburn's going to rip one
- 49:31off this guy. Because Scudorf is not getting his breaking ball over. His best pitch has
- 49:36been his fastball and his team straight. Two balls no strikes. Oh he just got under it.
- 49:47A high pop fly. Boy his swing was there. The left fielder makes the cut. Hiddle. Takes
- 49:53care of Coburn. Fly ball. Boy Mike had his fit. He does happen to get under it a little
- 49:59bit too much. One run out of all that. Two hits. No errors. Two left. At the end of four
- 50:10we're tied at one. Harry Carrey and Jimmy Pearsall. We're going to the top of the fifth.
- 50:20The Cubs count pack number one fifteen from the Flames are here. Just think why to lead
- 50:38the way. First pitch he swings. Ground ball to Kessinger. He's got it. Over the first
- 50:51one nine we've got Bracken neverziejorn Major here it's Colter speak. Touched by pages Slater
- 51:08Ohio Peirce. F HOJ K adalah Everyday True Team. We out of appears.talking tempted to
- 51:19One man out, top of the fifth tied up 1-1.
- 51:26Boy, it's humid up here.
- 51:32Instead of playing and sitting up here, I've got to believe.
- 51:35Well, this booth is just so small, Jimmy.
- 51:38Here's a pitch.
- 51:39Strike off.
- 51:41You know, we've got no room for the two of us to sit comfortably,
- 51:44and we should have three engineers sitting behind us.
- 51:48That booth next door, they could knock out.
- 51:51Now the wind will pitch, and a little bit low.
- 51:56Dan is crying for us. He's giving us a few tears, John.
- 51:59You know, he really feels sorry for you and I.
- 52:01Two balls and a strike. One man out.
- 52:04Charge front to hitter. Game tied up 1-1.
- 52:12Now the delivery.
- 52:13Strong ground ball to the second baseman.
- 52:15Friar kicks it, picks it up, throws.
- 52:18It's tied.
- 52:20Almost booted it too long, but recovered.
- 52:24You know, it's funny.
- 52:25He booted that ball and then pushed it to his right out of his glove,
- 52:29and then couldn't find it for a moment, and he almost lost the runner.
- 52:32But he knew it was there somewhere, and he kept feeling for it.
- 52:37A foot double by Eric Soto, almost 47th run batted in this year.
- 52:41Tied up the ballgame for the White Sox and the boys.
- 52:47Now there are two out, nobody on. Hal McCray to batter.
- 52:51First pitch is low. Ball one.
- 52:54McCray, he of the Cork bat, which turned out to be wood.
- 52:59Turned out to be nothing, huh?
- 53:01One ball, no strikes.
- 53:03Now the delivery.
- 53:05A little bit low.
- 53:08We understand Don Sutton, the pitcher of the Dodgers,
- 53:12who was involved in an altercation with Steve Garvey, the team star of first base,
- 53:18has called a press conference out on the coast for the purpose of apologizing to Garvey.
- 53:25There's the pitch long and foul.
- 53:30Well, I guess it's easy to be jealous of a guy who's got everything,
- 53:35and that's probably his story.
- 53:37My only thing about Garvey is whenever I've been around him, he's a perfect gentleman.
- 53:41He's a top class guy.
- 53:43Well, I mean, that's what they're jealous of.
- 53:45Oh, I see.
- 53:47I also noticed that Buckner said from the Cubs that he called up and congratulated Sutton.
- 53:52What a sick team.
- 53:55Well, he was with him, you know. That's what he's probably jealous about.
- 54:00Well, that's what gets me. Guys who have no involvement getting into the situation.
- 54:05The only thing Garvey does is play good every day.
- 54:08How could a pitcher be mad at him?
- 54:10If Reggie Smith is more valuable than Steve Garvey,
- 54:14then there's ball four to McRae that brings up Pete McCock.
- 54:20Then the Dodgers ought to be about 50 games in front.
- 54:25And Reggie Smith is an outstanding ball player.
- 54:29Sutton really struggling around 500.
- 54:31It just seems to me like he's upset with himself more than he's upset with Garvey and took it out on Garvey.
- 54:38Turns out they live only a few houses away, and the only comment I've heard from Steve Garvey on the situation is
- 54:47that he didn't like to have his family brought in to us.
- 54:50And I can't believe I'm for that one.
- 54:53Here's McCock swing until he fouls it off.
- 54:56One strike and nothing.
- 54:58You know, I always felt with my family, I kept my youngsters and my wife up in the upstairs away from everybody
- 55:04so they wouldn't get involved with the other players' wives.
- 55:06I just thought that we were any better than anybody, but I thought it was better for me.
- 55:10Because ball players say things they don't even know what they're talking about to their wives.
- 55:15Wives say things they don't even know what they're talking about to their husbands.
- 55:18You know, 90 percent of wives know absolutely nothing about baseball except the trowels.
- 55:24One strike and nothing.
- 55:26But they've got to show that they're interested in the livelihood of the man in the house.
- 55:30Being a white house, they have a lot of information.
- 55:32Being a white and a ball player is a bore. All you do is sit around and wait.
- 55:36Here's a pitcher a little bit high.
- 55:40A ball and a strike.
- 55:43Two men are out. Boy, anything burns me up.
- 55:46When a guy says the A, I can hear you rip me.
- 55:49Where'd you hear it?
- 55:50My wife told me.
- 55:52Did she tell you nice things we said about you?
- 55:54Well, she's in the bathroom then.
- 55:56One ball, one strike.
- 56:00But it's not only baseball that way.
- 56:02Here's a pitch swung and filed out of play.
- 56:05You know, that's why big corporations, when they hire an executive,
- 56:10they spend more time checking on the executive's wife than they do on the executive.
- 56:15They're hiring a very important money because they know what a troublemaking wife can do to a corporation.
- 56:23Just like you can do to a baseball team.
- 56:28Two strikes and a ball.
- 56:35Now, through the first, the runner back.
- 56:38McCrane, not too much of a threat as a baserunner, but I know he's been around long enough that he can steal one.
- 56:48Two men are out.
- 56:50Game tied, 1-1, the pitcher goes around there.
- 56:53Swung on, a little tap back to the mound.
- 56:56Holy throws the mound.
- 57:00No runs, no hits, no errors, one left.
- 57:03We go to the bottom of the first tied, 1-1.
- 57:06One drive and down the road, you're moving through a turn, and your car's looking good, it's going up and down in the mud.
- 57:17Harry Carrey and Jimmy Pearsall, we're going into the bottom of the fifth all tied up, 1-1.
- 57:23You know, at St. Louis, Jimmy, it was really funny.
- 57:25I'm not going to mention any names, but if one wife, you know, the wives usually sit in the same section.
- 57:33Three or four very, very jealous wives.
- 57:38Used to be really funny.
- 57:40A wife would show up with a new dress.
- 57:44They'd start talking how much it'd cost, she'd add a couple hundred, you know.
- 57:48Now, when the other wife would get home, she'd get her husband, she says,
- 57:52how come so-and-so's wife can spend $600 for a dress?
- 57:57Well, I can only spend $100.
- 57:59And oh, that poor guy, by the time he got to the ballpark, he wished he could go to Australia.
- 58:04You know, he'd have to put up, so he'd go out and spend $600.
- 58:08Well, next week, some wife would say she spent $800, right?
- 58:14One thing about the wives can't hit the field.
- 58:17Right out Washington, hits a bouncing ball up the middle.
- 58:20Frank White throws him out, nice play by White.
- 58:24The ball wasn't hit that hard, but it was hit perfectly, right over the pitcher's head.
- 58:29And you have to have a little range at second base to come up with that ball.
- 58:33You've seen a lot of those trickle through in the center field.
- 58:36But Frank White got over there quickly and made the play easily.
- 58:41What a turn he did, and Lecoque, who's impressed me with his basketball by this series,
- 58:45showed me something with his hands.
- 58:47He's got good soft hands and picked that ball out of the dirt very easily.
- 58:51Here's Tom Spencer now.
- 58:54Here's the pitcher, good bounce ball strike called Spencer Boundstock.
- 58:57His first time up, he's hitting 218.
- 59:01Bottom of the fifth, 1-1 tie, great ball, yeah.
- 59:05White's got some beating, beating the defending champ six out of 11.
- 59:09Here's the pitch ball back.
- 59:13Right below is here on the second row, a young fan making the catch in his lap.
- 59:19Pittsburgh got five runs in the seventh inning.
- 59:23Atlanta's batting in the bottom of the eighth, they lead by to nothing.
- 59:26They're six days behind and climbing.
- 59:29Here's the pitch on the white's front.
- 59:31Here's the tap to the second baseman. White throws him out.
- 59:35Two up, two down, boy, this foot's off his stuff too.
- 59:38See, Harry Spencer went from about 350, 60 to 218 in a hurry.
- 59:44That's one thing in the Major League, Jimmy.
- 59:49Once those pitchers, you might hit the first time around,
- 59:52but as soon as you've been in the league, I don't know how the great buying works,
- 59:57but everybody seems to know what you can and cannot hit.
- 1:00:00I remember scouting when I played too.
- 1:00:02More money spent on scouts up in front when they didn't spend years ago.
- 1:00:05You know, almost every team has an advanced scout.
- 1:00:08Into the city before their team, his team comes into the city,
- 1:00:12and he leaves a report to the manager on every player,
- 1:00:15what he can hit, what he can't hit, what he did hit, how they pitched him.
- 1:00:20And so a rookie might go good for a week or two,
- 1:00:23but then unless he really has the ability, his average is going to suffer.
- 1:00:28There's the pitch swim on by Breyer, bump by.
- 1:00:31Short center field, easy catch by Oda.
- 1:00:36One, two, three, nothing across.
- 1:00:38At the end of five, tied up at one.
- 1:00:41Now working his butt behind and then jumping up.
- 1:00:45Harry Carrey back in the ballpark.
- 1:00:47We're going into the sixth inning, a honey of a ballgame, one-one.
- 1:00:50Here on the right side, the beat me.
- 1:00:53Defending champion Royals, six out of 11 already in a year.
- 1:00:57The size of the world, I think Texas, they're rubbing out of 15.
- 1:01:00Harry, we were talking about the scouts up front
- 1:01:02and why the opposing teams learn the hitters quicker.
- 1:01:05But when we played, we played each other 21 times.
- 1:01:08It didn't take much to learn each other.
- 1:01:10It was just a matter of who was increasing and getting better in his ability.
- 1:01:14So I guess they didn't need the scouts.
- 1:01:17Tell me again, on my interviews before the game, I called attention to this banner out there,
- 1:01:24some annual Pimmons Chokers, to find out whether they had any reaction about it or not.
- 1:01:30Thousands of them said Larry Gura said,
- 1:01:32well, he's got to rather be in the playoffs and choke to never get into the playoffs at all.
- 1:01:39Which, that's always a very good rebuttal.
- 1:01:44Say it, Gura, he's been a surprise and a happy one for Kansas City.
- 1:01:49Here's Al Cowans, lightning fast, this fella on a good hitter.
- 1:01:53One out of two tonight, Mike Frohle is set.
- 1:01:59Fastball over the inside corner and strike call.
- 1:02:02Oh boy, does this throw hit the spot tonight.
- 1:02:06Frohle really having a good hard fastball in the sinker.
- 1:02:10Just jammed Cowans that time, had him completely fooled and he took the pitch.
- 1:02:16Cleveland Indians here tomorrow night.
- 1:02:22Curveball outside.
- 1:02:24I mentioned that Don Kessinger will be honored Friday night, September the 8th.
- 1:02:28And I also said that I'm sure a lot of the Cubs fans will want to be represented.
- 1:02:35And towards that end, I'd just like to pass along this information.
- 1:02:41Here's a pitch foul back.
- 1:02:43Ron Santo, you know, who is his teammate with the Cubs,
- 1:02:47is on the committee on the Don Kessinger night committee.
- 1:02:54But Chuck Shriver, who used to be with the Cubs as a publicity director,
- 1:02:58now with Aaron Cushman, public relations firm, is handling the details.
- 1:03:07Here's a pitch bouncing ball to Frohle, he's got it easy off.
- 1:03:14So you Cubs fans, or White Sox fans, for that matter, or anybody's fan,
- 1:03:23you want to participate in that Don Kessinger night,
- 1:03:26you might want to get a group of tickets for your friends,
- 1:03:29or want to be represented at a free game ceremony,
- 1:03:33want to make a gift or something, or have a fan club of Kessingers
- 1:03:38that wants to be represented, here's the name, Chuck Shriver.
- 1:03:43S-H-R-I-V-E-R, Chuck Shriver.
- 1:03:48Here's the phone number, 2-6-3-2-500.
- 1:03:56Here's Porter, a line drive, right after center fielder, easy off.
- 1:04:02Porter, wait a minute, make that a base hit, a line drive base hit in the center fielder.
- 1:04:09Spencer Field is on the one half, I'm looking down at his phone number.
- 1:04:12Chuck Shriver, 2-6-3-2-500.
- 1:04:18Getting the number again, 2-6-3-2-500.
- 1:04:22I asked him to wait until you got that in, Harry.
- 1:04:25Porter gets another hit, a line signal to center fielder.
- 1:04:29Here's Hurtle now, and he swings and he misses.
- 1:04:37Nice shot, John Gibson, Bernie Russell, and Jim Perman, the bootleggers in Oakland,
- 1:04:45are here with Eddie Kobecki of Strasbury.
- 1:04:52One on, one out.
- 1:04:54Hurtle swings, ground ball, swing, out at second, return throw, out at first.
- 1:05:00Double play, 3-6-3.
- 1:05:07So Hurtle hit a hot smash right at squares, returned it into a double play, 3-6-3.
- 1:05:15Beautifully done, no runs, one hit, no errors.
- 1:05:17Nobody left, we go into the bottom of the sixth, one-one tie.
- 1:05:23Here's Gar to lead it off.
- 1:05:28Bouncing ball to start, Potec throws, and boy, what a close play, but he's out.
- 1:05:34Let me tell you, John, that's not your line.
- 1:05:36We have had occasions this year when runners have walked down the lane,
- 1:05:41but you can't say that about Gar.
- 1:05:43He's set to double into a triple today.
- 1:05:47Hey, they're giving him a great hand for the last one.
- 1:05:50That's all it takes to just show these people that you want to play.
- 1:05:54The guys that are complaining are guys that just haven't played.
- 1:05:59These fans are just hungry to be able to cheer,
- 1:06:03and the only time they move is when a player just absolutely forces them to.
- 1:06:08Went out, here's Kessinger.
- 1:06:12Oh, that's the first time in a long set-tel you're something at this,
- 1:06:16that that one you stopped to reflect on it.
- 1:06:18Here's a guy who ran 90 feet at top speed, and they gave him an ovation.
- 1:06:24These guys that walked down the line, they ought to teach them something.
- 1:06:28Here's the foul ball off to the left.
- 1:06:30They might get a face hit if the guy doesn't throw it right.
- 1:06:34So we get paid in this game by production.
- 1:06:38One man out, nobody on.
- 1:06:41At least they used to pay that way.
- 1:06:43They show up.
- 1:06:49Out of sight.
- 1:06:54Pass for high.
- 1:06:55Kim Sankowski, Shirley Rook, and Son Mike, who's celebrating his 15th birthday are here.
- 1:07:06The pitch inside.
- 1:07:14Angie Leosi is joined again.
- 1:07:18The pitch inside.
- 1:07:25A group of 15th and Captain's quarters there, yeah.
- 1:07:30Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:07:32The delivery.
- 1:07:36Kelsinger, that's a high-pump line.
- 1:07:40Lecoque grabs it with one hand.
- 1:07:43Terry Squire's now playing in his 12th game, has that committed an error?
- 1:07:47And they finished that inning off that 3-6-3 double play was really something to watch.
- 1:07:51And this is something we didn't see all year.
- 1:07:53We weren't getting out of the innings because we just couldn't complete that kind of a double play.
- 1:07:57This guy here, I believe, is going to help us next year.
- 1:08:00And I like his bat, too.
- 1:08:02He hasn't done anything with split top, but this is the first time he's looked at him.
- 1:08:07Let's see what he does this time.
- 1:08:11Two out, nobody on the pitch.
- 1:08:13There's the looping liner in the center field of base-end.
- 1:08:17Looks like he caught it to these, he caught it.
- 1:08:20Squire's, boy, that wide really covers some ground.
- 1:08:25You know, you watch, when you see some of these other ballplayers, you begin to realize really what you've got to have before you win.
- 1:08:33That's right, like a Whittaker for Detroit, who changed that Detroit ball club into a contender, along with Camilla and Samuelson short stuff.
- 1:08:42Here's Lamar Johnson now, runner at first base, two out.
- 1:08:51Let's have a home run, huh, Harry?
- 1:08:53That's slow breaking.
- 1:08:55Lamar's had eight homers, 57 runs, about an inch, hitting 271.
- 1:09:00Oh, that's a good one.
- 1:09:02Oh, he's got a good one.
- 1:09:04So that strike can up it.
- 1:09:06You'll never see that pitch again tonight.
- 1:09:12You know, he's got such a hole between first and second, if they stay one and they hit it there, so he don't hit it out of the park.
- 1:09:19One strike and up it, Eric Saddle home would be next, so if they hit him, that's all you can give him.
- 1:09:26The first, there's a hit in the center field.
- 1:09:30Here's a runner on second racing, the third.
- 1:09:33The throw cut off.
- 1:09:34Staff go to first, Lamar back.
- 1:09:39Lamar had to make a dieting belly flop in the first base.
- 1:09:44He just fell down and skidded.
- 1:09:47Well, this is the way we scored with two outs and a fourth inning to tie it up.
- 1:09:52Saddle, with two outs, moved a double to short right field.
- 1:09:55Now he comes up again with runners in first and third.
- 1:09:59Last night with two outs, we got the winning run.
- 1:10:04St. Joseph's School also boys are here in the group tonight.
- 1:10:11Two men out, two men on, and here's Saddle home.
- 1:10:18Hey, Minnie, we're trying to, boy, you're a tough guy to get, Minnie.
- 1:10:21We're trying to get you, where's that mic?
- 1:10:24Let's get a ride, get you through a little play by play in Spanish.
- 1:10:27Here's Saddle home up there.
- 1:10:30Mike Saddle home in Spanish.
- 1:10:33He's preparing to throw.
- 1:10:35Throw, ball inside, it's a ball inside for Saddle home.
- 1:10:39First pitch, wall inside.
- 1:10:42Go ahead, come on, we'll do it.
- 1:10:46There's a first man in first, second, third, two outs.
- 1:10:48The score is tied to a race.
- 1:10:51There he is preparing to throw, ball.
- 1:10:54Strike corner.
- 1:10:56Honestly, from here it seemed that the ball was a little inside, but it seems that he passed the bat and it's a strike one.
- 1:11:02The umpire was wrong, you said, umpire was wrong.
- 1:11:05Well, I wouldn't say that the umpire was wrong, I don't know.
- 1:11:08A ball and a strike.
- 1:11:10Okay, man.
- 1:11:12Ball, low and inside.
- 1:11:17Low and inside.
- 1:11:19Two balls and a strike, two outs.
- 1:11:23I know that.
- 1:11:25Prepare to throw, roll, pass, pass, third base.
- 1:11:28Short, slow, and he's going to throw a roll, pass, third base.
- 1:11:33It's Hobie.
- 1:11:38There he is preparing to throw.
- 1:11:42I'm going to try to get a good
- 1:11:44start.
- 1:11:45Look at his runners.
- 1:11:46He's got it!
- 1:11:48It's a double!
- 1:11:50Right corner!
- 1:11:52It seemed that the ball was a little
- 1:11:54in the air, but it seems that he
- 1:11:56passed the bat and it's a strike one.
- 1:11:58The umpire wrong, as you said.
- 1:12:00I would say that the umpire is wrong.
- 1:12:02No, I'm not saying that.
- 1:12:04A ball and a strike.
- 1:12:06He's got it ready.
- 1:12:08He's got it.
- 1:12:10Ball low and inside.
- 1:12:12Down and inside.
- 1:12:14Two balls and a strike.
- 1:12:16Two outs.
- 1:12:18He's got it.
- 1:12:20He's got it ready.
- 1:12:22Roller pass, foul, third base.
- 1:12:24Short, slow, and he's got it ready.
- 1:12:26Roller pass, third base.
- 1:12:28Runners in first and third, two outs,
- 1:12:30two balls, two strikes, have Saturday
- 1:12:32all in a rolling foul outside
- 1:12:34third base.
- 1:12:36There he is.
- 1:12:38He's got it ready.
- 1:12:40Look at his runners.
- 1:12:42He's got it.
- 1:12:44He's got it.
- 1:12:46He's running and...
- 1:12:48It's a double ball!
- 1:12:50One round in.
- 1:12:52Two outs in.
- 1:12:54Hey!
- 1:13:02Not a hole.
- 1:13:04It's a double.
- 1:13:06He's done a very, not a very good job
- 1:13:08of playing the five-all.
- 1:13:10He really lost his
- 1:13:12sparing
- 1:13:14and the ball hit off the wall
- 1:13:16from the left where he was playing.
- 1:13:18A double,
- 1:13:20a triple-oxidation
- 1:13:22powderhawk,
- 1:13:24two runs short.
- 1:13:26Hang in there, Minnie. Nice shot.
- 1:13:28Nice throw, Minnie. Oh, I want to tell you,
- 1:13:30certainly can't find a place for him,
- 1:13:32but you can't hide him when he hits the ball
- 1:13:34and you can't go to him.
- 1:13:36All right!
- 1:13:42You need him.
- 1:13:44They kind of sat on him with a double,
- 1:13:46two-army eye.
- 1:13:48He takes play down on the throw.
- 1:13:50All right!
- 1:14:1430 pop-back takes over.
- 1:14:20New run.
- 1:14:22Three hits.
- 1:14:24No errors. One left.
- 1:14:26This is Harry Carrey
- 1:14:28going over to the television booth
- 1:14:30to score here at the end of the sixth.
- 1:14:32White Sox 3, Kansas City 1.
- 1:14:36Lauren Brown back at Comiskey Park
- 1:14:38along with Jimmy Pearsall
- 1:14:40as we go to the seventh for the second night
- 1:14:42in a row, the White Sox, after nobody on
- 1:14:44and two outs, in a rally going
- 1:14:46as they just came up with two runs
- 1:14:48of the sixth inning.
- 1:14:50And Mike Squires, who Paul Splendorf
- 1:14:52is on the first two times that he faced him,
- 1:14:54looped one into right center
- 1:14:56over the outstretched middle of Frank White.
- 1:14:58Lamar Johnson singled his center,
- 1:15:00sending him to third, and then
- 1:15:02Eric Satterholm on a ball that was
- 1:15:04catchable hit one at the base
- 1:15:06of the wall out in left field, and
- 1:15:08it scored two runs and the White Sox
- 1:15:10had one way to one. For the second night
- 1:15:12in a row now with two outs, we've scored
- 1:15:14three runs last night and two runs tonight
- 1:15:16to go out in front. So this is what we
- 1:15:18haven't been doing and it's nice to see these guys
- 1:15:20bearing down with two outs instead of just
- 1:15:22saying, well, this inning's over.
- 1:15:24Let's get it over with. So we go to the
- 1:15:26seventh. It'll be Amos Otis,
- 1:15:28Freddie Potek, and Frank White.
- 1:15:30What a pitching to Philadelphia
- 1:15:32against LA. Tommy Johns,
- 1:15:3414 and 9,
- 1:15:36against Carlton, 12 and 11
- 1:15:38against Philadelphia. They probably have about
- 1:15:4050,000 in LA tonight.
- 1:15:42Pete Bukovic
- 1:15:44in the Cardinals, four, Cincinnati
- 1:15:46and Moscow, three.
- 1:15:52Here's the first pitch to Otis,
- 1:15:54and it's a strike.
- 1:15:56Only four
- 1:15:58times tonight is
- 1:16:00Proley giving up a ball hit to the outfield,
- 1:16:02three put outs in the home run by
- 1:16:04Porter in the upper deck. Otherwise, he's kept the ball
- 1:16:06low. Though Porter didn't single
- 1:16:08a ball that dropped in front of
- 1:16:10the center fielder in the last inning,
- 1:16:12but his success has been
- 1:16:14keeping the ball low.
- 1:16:16Here's the pitch and it's
- 1:16:18low.
- 1:16:20That is what Charlie Brown
- 1:16:22says the secret of life is, keep the ball
- 1:16:24low.
- 1:16:28A ball and a strike.
- 1:16:30White Sox
- 1:16:32trying to
- 1:16:34win the three game set here tonight,
- 1:16:36as well as the season series
- 1:16:38at Comiskey Park. Here's the pitch, swing of the grounder to third.
- 1:16:40Sonterholm has it. Throws,
- 1:16:42he got him.
- 1:16:44Otis is out, five, three.
- 1:16:46One, two,
- 1:16:50three, four, five, six,
- 1:16:52seven, eight, nine, ten.
- 1:16:56Eleven, twelve,
- 1:16:58thirteen
- 1:17:00put outs tonight
- 1:17:02for Squires at first base.
- 1:17:04I wonder what the record is.
- 1:17:08Boy, Lauren, if you don't know, the kids from Waterbury sure
- 1:17:10don't.
- 1:17:12Well, just an indication. When that first baseman's
- 1:17:14got a lot of assists, a lot of ground balls.
- 1:17:18The first pitch to Pottec
- 1:17:20is a ball. Freddie has forced the
- 1:17:22man out at second and he is grounded out to short.
- 1:17:24Outfield plays him
- 1:17:26shallow and straight away.
- 1:17:28Play him straight up on the infield.
- 1:17:30Sonterholm, though, playing parallel to the
- 1:17:32bag at third. There's the pitch,
- 1:17:34swing of the fly ball to left. Gar coming over
- 1:17:36near the line. He's there.
- 1:17:38And he's got it in foul territory in their
- 1:17:40two downs. Listen, Gar
- 1:17:42ran a mile for that ball. He got a good jump and
- 1:17:44really hustled, just like when he ran out that
- 1:17:46ground ball that he almost beat out. And also
- 1:17:48stripping that, stretching that double
- 1:17:50into a triple, so he has really
- 1:17:52come to play.
- 1:17:54So the batter is Frank White.
- 1:17:56Batting in the ninth spot
- 1:17:58here tonight with a right-hander going.
- 1:18:00He is singled and he is grounded
- 1:18:02out to short.
- 1:18:08Atlanta has been out for a long
- 1:18:10time in the bottom of the eighth after the Pirates
- 1:18:12have gotten five in the seventh.
- 1:18:14Right-hander
- 1:18:16Ruddy, here's the pitch, and it's
- 1:18:18high and inside of all.
- 1:18:20White, who really has improved
- 1:18:22his hitting going to the opposite field.
- 1:18:24It also busts a lot. May have an
- 1:18:26idea right here with two runs behind and
- 1:18:28Sadler home playing deep at third. He might
- 1:18:30bunt one. Let's see what happens.
- 1:18:32Here's the pitch, and it's
- 1:18:34low.
- 1:18:36Well, he gives no indication that he's going to
- 1:18:38bust.
- 1:18:40Two balls and
- 1:18:42no strikes.
- 1:18:48Nobody on, two outs.
- 1:18:50Right-hander delivers. Here's the pitch.
- 1:18:52And it's low outside, ball three.
- 1:18:54Mike has
- 1:18:56walked only one man tonight. That was McCray
- 1:18:58with two outs and a fifth.
- 1:19:00That's the first time that he's going
- 1:19:023-0 on any hitter tonight.
- 1:19:06Right-hander Ruddy,
- 1:19:08here's the pitch, and it's low of all.
- 1:19:12He walked him on four straight pitches. That's
- 1:19:14the second walk given up by Mike.
- 1:19:16Now, the top
- 1:19:18of the order coming up,
- 1:19:20George Brett.
- 1:19:22Brett, who has not been really
- 1:19:24swinging a bad good, went 0-4
- 1:19:26last night. And so far,
- 1:19:28he has grounded a second
- 1:19:30place and grounded on a six at the first
- 1:19:32base. So that right thumb
- 1:19:34is really giving him trouble.
- 1:19:36And we thank
- 1:19:38Francis Enderman for the sass
- 1:19:40gorilla. What is that?
- 1:19:42Sass gorilla. Should I hum it?
- 1:19:44Yes.
- 1:19:48Right-hander Ruddy, here's the pitch.
- 1:19:50And it's a strike in the outside corner.
- 1:19:52I don't think he's going to
- 1:19:54throw that pitching through a corner. He's
- 1:19:56hitting the upper deck. Some kind of a change-up off
- 1:19:58speed, either a fast ball, change-up
- 1:20:00or a breaking ball. Jimmy, it looked like it was
- 1:20:02a hanging curve ball. Was it? That TV, yeah.
- 1:20:04It was way up there. It just
- 1:20:06when that thing just gets up there even in slow
- 1:20:08motion, slower than normal.
- 1:20:10Yeah, it was up letter high
- 1:20:12and he just popped it in the third row.
- 1:20:14Youngster made a great catch out there. Did he really? Yeah,
- 1:20:16with a bit.
- 1:20:18Well, we ought to put one of our fielders up there.
- 1:20:24Right-hander Ruddy, here's the pitch.
- 1:20:26And it's outside a ball. Jim Landis
- 1:20:28once caught a ball over the fence
- 1:20:30here at Kamiski Park and tumbled over when they
- 1:20:32had the fence out there. And I think sometime
- 1:20:34in your career that happened, didn't it? Yes, but
- 1:20:36Landis, great outfielder. One of the
- 1:20:38better center fielders that I've ever played against.
- 1:20:40Also, they had Barry here who could
- 1:20:42play as well as Landis.
- 1:20:46I didn't like that fence because they had a little
- 1:20:48dip for drainage in front of it. You could
- 1:20:50fall in it. Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:20:52Swing on the grounder to...
- 1:20:54Nice play!
- 1:20:56Makes the unassisted out.
- 1:20:58And Brett has tried to pull
- 1:21:00purely four times tonight and he's out
- 1:21:02four times as a result.
- 1:21:04So, no runs, no hits.
- 1:21:06One left. We go to the bottom of the seventh
- 1:21:08lady. That's the one. Here's Mary Carey.
- 1:21:10Here's Mary Carey.
- 1:21:12Let me hear ya!
- 1:21:14Nice play!
- 1:21:44Woo!
- 1:21:46Lady by the wall.
- 1:21:48Lady by the wall.
- 1:21:50Hey!
- 1:21:52Hey!
- 1:21:54Hey!
- 1:21:56Have we got
- 1:21:58time for you
- 1:22:00when you miss your house with us?
- 1:22:02Have we got time for you?
- 1:22:04Lord Brown and Jimmy Pearsall
- 1:22:06back at Comiskey Park as Claudell Washington
- 1:22:08takes the ball outside.
- 1:22:10Lady
- 1:22:12off the
- 1:22:14seventh inning. White Dock leading
- 1:22:16three to one. Left-handed ready.
- 1:22:18Here's the pitch. Swing and a miss.
- 1:22:20Evens it up one-and-one.
- 1:22:22Well, the Royals after tonight will either
- 1:22:24be in first by a half a game or in second
- 1:22:26a half a game out. White and
- 1:22:28Hurddock made a great compliment to Cravic.
- 1:22:30They, the best game, pitched against them
- 1:22:32in three years. When he shut them out
- 1:22:34last night, treated nothing and struck out nine.
- 1:22:36Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:22:38Here's the swing and a hopper over the mound.
- 1:22:40White has it behind second.
- 1:22:42Trolls out in time as it pulls
- 1:22:44Lecombe off the bag and I'm sure that's going to go
- 1:22:46as a hit. I'm amazed that White
- 1:22:48even got it there in time, but it was off the bag
- 1:22:50towards right a little bit.
- 1:22:52And it's an infield hit for Claudell.
- 1:22:54That's the
- 1:22:56seventh White Dock's hit of the night.
- 1:22:58And the batter will be
- 1:23:00Tom Spencer looking down to Bobby
- 1:23:02Kanop for a sign.
- 1:23:04He'll try to sacrifice this runner over.
- 1:23:06Even if
- 1:23:08that throw hasn't on the bag,
- 1:23:10Claudell there had it beat out. He was really flying
- 1:23:12down that line. Tough play.
- 1:23:14Chopped right over the pitcher's mound and White got it.
- 1:23:16We're going to get activity in the Kansas City
- 1:23:18bullpen again. Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:20A bunt popped up.
- 1:23:22Squidorf has it, but Washington
- 1:23:24didn't get the back. He popped it right for the
- 1:23:26pitchers, raced off the mound in a
- 1:23:28hurry.
- 1:23:32Not a good bunt, but good defense
- 1:23:34on the part of Squidorf.
- 1:23:36I think even if he didn't get it, the catcher had a good shot
- 1:23:38at it.
- 1:23:40It was popped right between the mound and home
- 1:23:42play. So, one out.
- 1:23:44Greg Pryor the batter.
- 1:23:46Pryor last night. Now time is called.
- 1:23:48Claudell may have heard himself going back to first.
- 1:23:50Charlie Saad, the trainer
- 1:23:52going out to take a look at it.
- 1:23:56Tony LaRusso,
- 1:23:58first base coach talking. Can't tell
- 1:24:00exactly what the nature of the
- 1:24:02injury was.
- 1:24:04Larry Dovey, again, that same ankle
- 1:24:06I think he's blocking him out.
- 1:24:08They're going to take him out. Yep.
- 1:24:10He re-injured that ankle.
- 1:24:14So, he's going to be out of the ball game.
- 1:24:18They're in the seventh inning.
- 1:24:20Detroit leads Toronto 5-2.
- 1:24:22What a big double header. Toronto
- 1:24:24won over Detroit. The data won last night.
- 1:24:26They'd have been seven and a half games out.
- 1:24:28Detroit. Clean them out at home play.
- 1:24:30So, one out. Greg Pryor the
- 1:24:32batter.
- 1:24:34Pryor last night. Now time is called.
- 1:24:36Claudell may have heard himself going back to first.
- 1:24:38Charlie Saad, the trainer
- 1:24:40going out to take a look at it.
- 1:24:44Tony LaRusso,
- 1:24:46first base coach talking. Can't tell
- 1:24:48exactly what the nature of the
- 1:24:50injury was. Larry Dovey
- 1:24:52again, that same ankle I think
- 1:24:54blocking him out.
- 1:24:56They're going to take him out. Yep.
- 1:24:58He re-injured that ankle.
- 1:25:00So, he's going to be out of the ball game.
- 1:25:06They're in the seventh inning. Detroit
- 1:25:08leads Toronto 5-2. And what a big
- 1:25:10double header. Toronto won over Detroit.
- 1:25:12The data won last night. Data been seven
- 1:25:14and a half games out. Detroit.
- 1:25:16But now they're still nine.
- 1:25:18Big loss from Milwaukee. They were only
- 1:25:20six out. Texas defeated
- 1:25:22Minnesota on a three run home run
- 1:25:24in the tenth by Jim Sunberg, four to one.
- 1:25:26Bobby Molinaro
- 1:25:28is going to come in and pitch one. He is the
- 1:25:30leading base dealer on this club.
- 1:25:32So, the white side might
- 1:25:34have a few more options
- 1:25:36but now it's Molinaro. It's Bird
- 1:25:38that's brought out, goes to the clubhouse with that
- 1:25:40ankle that he re-injured.
- 1:25:42You got a left hand
- 1:25:44and a right hand are warming up on the both ends.
- 1:25:46It looks like
- 1:25:48Mangori
- 1:25:50and football.
- 1:25:52I can't get used to him in that blue youth.
- 1:25:54More little darker blue with Texas
- 1:25:56and gray with Detroit.
- 1:26:00How about those back to school
- 1:26:02utilities
- 1:26:04for equipment.
- 1:26:06It's great. It really is.
- 1:26:08Tomorrow night the first 15,000
- 1:26:10gets them.
- 1:26:12Here's the pitch. We're going to pop up coming back.
- 1:26:14Porter has the play.
- 1:26:18He can't get it.
- 1:26:20He came in too far
- 1:26:22it looked like. He wanted to pick up the
- 1:26:24fence and then go back off it.
- 1:26:26And when he got to the fence
- 1:26:28he lost the ball because he was underneath it
- 1:26:30and the ball just got behind him.
- 1:26:32A great
- 1:26:34pitch to like Porter still has the same trouble.
- 1:26:36So, Friar gets the life and many times
- 1:26:38when this happens,
- 1:26:40Gruns will score.
- 1:26:42All this drag last night that ignited that
- 1:26:44three-one rally in the eighth inning with nobody on it
- 1:26:46two out when he singles.
- 1:26:48White Sox won it three to nothing. Same thing
- 1:26:50happened here tonight with six. Nobody on it
- 1:26:52two out. Two singles and a
- 1:26:54double. Going a couple of runs.
- 1:26:56There goes the runner. Here's the pitch.
- 1:26:58Swung to the ground to right side. White has it.
- 1:27:00Paladero will stay in second and White
- 1:27:02throws out Friar. But they get the runner
- 1:27:04in scoring position.
- 1:27:06And they're two down.
- 1:27:08And the batter, Ralph Gahr
- 1:27:10who has tripled in three trips.
- 1:27:12Friar could have got a little bit more on that ball. He just
- 1:27:14drove it through. White made a move to his
- 1:27:16right but the ball was just a high hopper.
- 1:27:18But Friar got his job done.
- 1:27:20He put that run in scoring position and not a
- 1:27:22double play. Well, Leonard Sherman, an attorney
- 1:27:24here in Chicago listening to the ball game
- 1:27:26while at the ballpark. It's far to me
- 1:27:28it was Ken Berry who caught the ball and then
- 1:27:30slipped over the fence. Not Landis.
- 1:27:32Here's the pitch to Gahr. Put in the ground
- 1:27:34for the second. White has it
- 1:27:36and he throws him out. So that
- 1:27:38retires the side here in the seventh.
- 1:27:40No runs.
- 1:27:42One hit. One left.
- 1:27:44So we go to the eighth. White Sox
- 1:27:46in three. Kansas City one.
- 1:27:48The time
- 1:27:50that keeps coming through
- 1:27:52the year of the
- 1:27:54soul
- 1:27:56only one
- 1:28:06Kavisky Park.
- 1:28:08Fourteen thousand five hundred and twenty
- 1:28:10four here tonight.
- 1:28:12And Molinero
- 1:28:14is the main to the ballgame.
- 1:28:16Replacing
- 1:28:18Claudel Washington in right.
- 1:28:22And Fad Bosley comes in to play
- 1:28:24left field.
- 1:28:26So we have an outfield
- 1:28:28of Bosley and left.
- 1:28:30Center and center and Molinero in right.
- 1:28:32In field. Friar is at first.
- 1:28:34Friar at second.
- 1:28:36Pessinger at short. Satterholm at third.
- 1:28:38And Mike Colbert
- 1:28:40behind the plate. And we look down
- 1:28:42to the Kansas City bullpen.
- 1:28:44Marty Patz for the right hander.
- 1:28:46And Doug Byrd a right hander.
- 1:28:48A warming up. Waleba White Sox bullpen.
- 1:28:50Laren Legro a right hander.
- 1:28:52And Pablo Torrealba a left hander warming up
- 1:28:54for the White Sox. Hal McCray leads
- 1:28:56it off in the eighth. White Sox leading
- 1:28:58three to one.
- 1:29:00He's 0 for 2 tonight. Got on on a walk his
- 1:29:02last time up.
- 1:29:06Here's a 1-0 picture. The swing and a
- 1:29:08one hopper to Kessinger.
- 1:29:10Throws him out. It wasn't that easy.
- 1:29:12That ball hopped about three feet in front of him
- 1:29:14and came up quickly. But he glubbed
- 1:29:16it about waist high and throws him out for the
- 1:29:18first out of the inning.
- 1:29:24Will
- 1:29:26Lombardo who's now directing the
- 1:29:28Glenn Lombardo and Royal Canadian
- 1:29:30Orchestra here tonight
- 1:29:32along with other fellows in the band.
- 1:29:34Rich Atkins, Les Clark and Rich
- 1:29:36Chiminko. Hopefully the White Sox
- 1:29:38win here tonight.
- 1:29:40Pete LaCocca batter 1 for 3 tonight.
- 1:29:42Pitch 1 to left center field in the first
- 1:29:44pitch going way back. Spencer
- 1:29:46he's there. He's got it.
- 1:29:48And keeps left center field on the grass.
- 1:29:52The LaCocca gave that a ride.
- 1:29:54That is only the fourth put out by
- 1:29:56an outfielder here tonight.
- 1:29:58And slowly has kept the ball low.
- 1:30:02Ken and Patty Kramer. They're four children
- 1:30:04of Marion, Illinois at the ballpark.
- 1:30:08Ken Burley,
- 1:30:10Pinsach. Five years old.
- 1:30:14Here
- 1:30:16her first ballgame.
- 1:30:18P-I-E-T-R-Z-A-K.
- 1:30:20And the internal revenue
- 1:30:22agents accept organizations and employee
- 1:30:24plan divisions are at the ballpark tonight.
- 1:30:30And the good old boys
- 1:30:32from the community family centers
- 1:30:34are in attendance. And we appreciate
- 1:30:36Leonard Sherman passing up that note on Ken
- 1:30:38Burley. As Jimmy said, not much
- 1:30:40different from the defensive abilities of
- 1:30:42Jim Landis and Ken Burley.
- 1:30:44With great years with the White Sox.
- 1:30:48Right hander ready. Here's the pitch.
- 1:30:50I think Landis played at this ballpark
- 1:30:52more when it was wide
- 1:30:54open than Burley did.
- 1:30:56Meaning the
- 1:30:58defense was not at center field that much when
- 1:31:00Landis was here opposed to when Ken
- 1:31:02Burley was here. I may be mistaken, but I'm almost
- 1:31:04certain that Landis played
- 1:31:06more in this park
- 1:31:08with a 445 to straight away center.
- 1:31:10Al Collins, one
- 1:31:12for three tonight, bows off
- 1:31:14the first pitch. Here's the second offering by
- 1:31:16Burley. And it's outside of all.
- 1:31:20The White Sox that shut out Kansas City
- 1:31:22for 17 straight innings
- 1:31:24before Porter, Holbert, and the fourth.
- 1:31:26Now Burley is shutting out.
- 1:31:32Since that time, that was a lead off
- 1:31:34homer. Here's the pitch swing and a fly ball
- 1:31:36lost at the right center. Spencer coming over.
- 1:31:38Molinaro coming over and Spencer
- 1:31:40takes it. And that
- 1:31:42retires the side. One, two, three.
- 1:31:44As the Royals go down
- 1:31:46in order. And that is
- 1:31:48only the second time they've been set down in order
- 1:31:50tonight. So we go to the bottom
- 1:31:52of the eighth. The White Sox three, Kansas
- 1:31:54City one.
- 1:32:54The best
- 1:33:24point.
- 1:33:26Brown back at Tumiski Park as we go to the bottom
- 1:33:28of the eighth. Paul Splendor faces
- 1:33:30John Kessinger here. White Sox
- 1:33:32leading three to one. Here's the swing and a fly ball
- 1:33:34left center field of the base hit. Porter's
- 1:33:36over to cut it off. Here goes Kessinger
- 1:33:38headed for second. Now he stops and goes back
- 1:33:40to first. The White Sox get
- 1:33:42their lead off man on.
- 1:33:44A pair of right handers in the bullpen for
- 1:33:46the Royals. Marty Patton and Doug Byrd.
- 1:33:48Rather Steve
- 1:33:50Foucault continue to throw.
- 1:33:52Kessinger with his second hit of the
- 1:33:54ninth.
- 1:33:56Looking ahead to the Kansas City
- 1:33:58ninth Ohio.
- 1:34:00Gerald Porter, Clint Hurdle and Amos
- 1:34:02Ode. Two left handers
- 1:34:04and a right hander to face right
- 1:34:06hander Mike Brody.
- 1:34:10Mike Squires the batter. He
- 1:34:12triggered that two run rally.
- 1:34:14And the six inning with nobody on and two out with a
- 1:34:16single and the pitch to him is a strike on the outside
- 1:34:18Porter. After he had struck out
- 1:34:20right almost made a great play on the ball
- 1:34:22but it just got over his outstretched
- 1:34:24right center.
- 1:34:26That Johnson single that
- 1:34:28Sonderholt doubled the left as Hurdle
- 1:34:32made a poor attempt on the ball. There's a big
- 1:34:34break. Here goes the runner outside of
- 1:34:36ball. Throw to second. Goes in standing
- 1:34:38to stolen base.
- 1:34:40Doug Kessinger with a stolen base.
- 1:34:44I don't think they really expected Kessinger
- 1:34:46to be going here with nobody out and the
- 1:34:48fact that he is thirty six years old
- 1:34:50that is his second stolen base
- 1:34:52of the year. So now the
- 1:34:54White Sox with a runner in scoring position
- 1:34:56and nobody out.
- 1:35:00Here's the pitch.
- 1:35:02Outside of all two and one.
- 1:35:06White Sox hoping to add an insurance run here
- 1:35:08in the eighth inning.
- 1:35:12Sox has defeated Kansas City. Six out of
- 1:35:14eleven games this year.
- 1:35:20Left handed ready. Here's the two one pitch.
- 1:35:22And it is fouled off
- 1:35:24the left side by
- 1:35:26Squires as he was trying to put
- 1:35:28Kessinger over to third.
- 1:35:34It's the final game of the year between the
- 1:35:36Royals and the White Sox here in Chicago.
- 1:35:38White Sox will be in Kansas City
- 1:35:40Monday, Tuesday
- 1:35:42and Wednesday night.
- 1:35:44We'll have Smootorf going against the Sox
- 1:35:46for the fifth time this year.
- 1:35:48Not Monday.
- 1:35:50Left handed ready.
- 1:35:52The two two delivery.
- 1:35:54Swing and a foul coming up stairs below it.
- 1:35:56And a couple of fans
- 1:35:58battle for it.
- 1:36:00The man who got it
- 1:36:02stuck it gets it. Guy who
- 1:36:04touched it first just has a red hand.
- 1:36:06Nothing more, nothing less.
- 1:36:12Two-tip account.
- 1:36:14Smootorf ready. Out of the stretch. Kessinger
- 1:36:16with the lead off the second. Here's the pitch
- 1:36:18Squires. Put in another foul
- 1:36:20this time to the left of it.
- 1:36:22Fans dropped it
- 1:36:24in the first row of that back
- 1:36:26section in the upper deck.
- 1:36:28And the fan in the back row of the first section
- 1:36:30grabbed it.
- 1:36:32So we've had a couple of errors
- 1:36:34in the upper deck.
- 1:36:36Here in the eighth.
- 1:36:38Smootorf ready.
- 1:36:40Two-two pitch.
- 1:36:42Halt strike free. Stuck him out for the
- 1:36:44third time tonight.
- 1:36:50Now Mike a little disgusted
- 1:36:52but he battled him in that last inning
- 1:36:54and last time he was up
- 1:36:56and singled that trigger the two run rally
- 1:36:58which has the White Sox out at front now
- 1:37:00as Whitey Herzog
- 1:37:02comes to the mound and right-hander Lamar
- 1:37:04Johnson is up.
- 1:37:06So he I would imagine
- 1:37:08will bring in either Foucault
- 1:37:10or Marty Patton
- 1:37:12pair of right-handers for both ends.
- 1:37:18He wants Foucault
- 1:37:20right-hander to come in to face Lamar Johnson
- 1:37:22here in the eighth with the White Sox
- 1:37:24leading by a score
- 1:37:26of three to one. We'll be back
- 1:37:28in a minute. Is that you Selma?
- 1:37:30Yes it is.
- 1:37:32Still on the shopping for the party now?
- 1:37:34Yes I am.
- 1:37:36Pardon me.
- 1:37:38Who is this man?
- 1:37:40This man here.
- 1:37:42I promised him a
- 1:37:44J's potato chips.
- 1:37:46See at the market your wife bought all of the J's
- 1:37:48on the shelf for your party and the little
- 1:37:50you left for me.
- 1:37:52J's are not like J's.
- 1:37:54J's are made from thinly sliced
- 1:37:56fresh whole potatoes.
- 1:37:58I brought my wife home for potato chips.
- 1:38:00They're cooked in corn oil and cottonseed oil.
- 1:38:02Tastes great.
- 1:38:04Here you are.
- 1:38:06Thank you.
- 1:38:08I could finish it outside in the rain.
- 1:38:10Would you like another one?
- 1:38:12I wonder if you have any milk and house Selma?
- 1:38:14Oh sure.
- 1:38:16How about a sandwich?
- 1:38:18Thank you.
- 1:38:20I'll be very happy.
- 1:38:22J's the natural potato chips.
- 1:38:24You're for real.
- 1:38:28Steve Funkkopf comes in for Kansas City.
- 1:38:30They've just picked him up on waivers
- 1:38:32for the Detroit Tigers.
- 1:38:34He replaces Paul Spudorf.
- 1:38:36Spudorf went seven in a third innings.
- 1:38:38He allowed all white shots three runs.
- 1:38:40On eight hits he walked the man
- 1:38:42and he struck out three.
- 1:38:44And he is responsible for the runner
- 1:38:46over at second base.
- 1:38:52Now Funkkopf with Detroit had one-two lost four
- 1:38:58with four saves.
- 1:39:02With an earned run average of 3.37.
- 1:39:04They don't have any stats on them
- 1:39:06for Kansas City so I will imagine
- 1:39:08this is his first appearance
- 1:39:10with the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:39:18Pittsburgh defeated Atlanta tonight
- 1:39:205-1.
- 1:39:22Ten victories in a row for the Pirates.
- 1:39:24And they have now moved into an identical tie
- 1:39:30for second place with the Cubs.
- 1:39:36Both clubs with a record of 63 wins against 62 on.
- 1:39:46The Pirates are coming, tra la la la.
- 1:39:48Bob Glass is with Associated Press here in Chicago
- 1:39:52informing us that the Pirates have a much easier way to go
- 1:39:54than either the Bullies or the Cubs.
- 1:40:00Lamar Johnson the batter facing Funkkopf
- 1:40:04making his first appearance for the Kansas City Royals.
- 1:40:08Flylevin was the winner in that Pirate game.
- 1:40:10He's now 11-8.
- 1:40:11Mikro the loser five and 14.
- 1:40:13Here's the pitch.
- 1:40:14Here's a swing and a long drive.
- 1:40:16Be out of play into the seat.
- 1:40:22Lamar touching that ball to the left.
- 1:40:25Really not a lot of oop behind him.
- 1:40:29And an art foul.
- 1:40:33Cincinnati has changed pitchers in the eighth.
- 1:40:37Cardinals leading 4-3.
- 1:40:39Bears come on the pitch.
- 1:40:41Right-hander ready.
- 1:40:42Here's the one strike pitch.
- 1:40:43Here's a swing and a base hit into the left center field.
- 1:40:45Here comes the runner around the score.
- 1:40:47Lamar makes the turn at first and comes back.
- 1:40:49And it's a 4-1 ballgame.
- 1:40:53So Whitey Herzog going with the percentages
- 1:40:56bringing in the right-hander to face the right-handed hitter.
- 1:41:00And it didn't work.
- 1:41:01And that run is charged to Swidor.
- 1:41:04So Swidor's total statistics for the night,
- 1:41:07seven and a third in each pitch, four runs on eight hits.
- 1:41:11The man is struck out three.
- 1:41:16And the batter is Eric Sonderholm,
- 1:41:18who up until Lamar's RBI singles has driven in all three White Sox
- 1:41:23runs tonight with a pair of doubles.
- 1:41:25Double Homer running the fourth to tie the game.
- 1:41:27Double Homer two in the sixth to get the White Sox to lead 3-1.
- 1:41:31Now up there with the White Sox leading 4-1.
- 1:41:34And a runner at first with one out here in the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 1:41:37And now Foucault wants to talk to his catcher, Darryl Porter.
- 1:41:43Another baseball today.
- 1:41:45Cleveland beat Milwaukee.
- 1:41:46Andre Thornton, a home run in the 11th, 9-8.
- 1:41:49Texas beat Minnesota 4-1, a three-run homer by Sundberg in the 10th.
- 1:41:53And tonight Detroit leading Toronto 5-2 in the ninth.
- 1:41:57And the White Sox leading Kansas City 4-1 in the eighth.
- 1:42:01Check the National League for you in a moment.
- 1:42:03Foucault working out of the stretch delivers, and it's up high of all.
- 1:42:07The Pirates won their tenth in a row, beating Atlanta 5-1,
- 1:42:11moving into a second place tie with the Idol Cup.
- 1:42:14Cardinals now leading Cincinnati 4-3.
- 1:42:17That game has now moved into the bottom of the eighth.
- 1:42:19Right-hander Ruddy, here's the pitch.
- 1:42:21Inside of all, ball two.
- 1:42:23Metfleet San Diego 1-0 at the end of one.
- 1:42:26Philadelphia just underway in Los Angeles.
- 1:42:29And we've been informed that pitcher Don Sutton has called the news conference
- 1:42:33to apologize publicly to Steve Garvey for the remarks that he made about it
- 1:42:38in a newspaper article on the result fight between the two.
- 1:42:41Here's the two.
- 1:42:43Oh, pitch.
- 1:42:44Going alongside the left hurdle is there to his left,
- 1:42:46and he's got it about 10 feet in front of the warning track in left field.
- 1:42:50And there's two down.
- 1:42:55Two out, and Mike Colburn the batter.
- 1:42:57He has flied out the center, flied out the left, and popped up the short.
- 1:43:000-3 tonight.
- 1:43:03Not only has Sutton made some unkind remarks about Garvey
- 1:43:08as well as his family in the newspaper, but he's got a radio show out in L.A.
- 1:43:12and he has gone after him on that.
- 1:43:15Just a matter of jealousy on the part of Sutton and a couple of the Dodgers,
- 1:43:21including Bill Buckner now with the Cubs, who used to be a Dodger.
- 1:43:24Here's the pitch swing and a miss.
- 1:43:27It was Garvey, you know, who moved Buckner off the first base
- 1:43:34and made him expendable.
- 1:43:35That's one of the reasons they were able to trade him to the Cubs.
- 1:43:40He was upset at Garvey over that.
- 1:43:42Here's the pitch outside of all.
- 1:43:44How in the world, anybody, if you legitimately get beat out
- 1:43:48for a position to be upset or replaced in a job,
- 1:43:57it's beyond me.
- 1:43:59But at any rate, Sutton, when I give him credit for it,
- 1:44:02apologized publicly tonight before that game to Garvey.
- 1:44:04Here's the pitch outside of all.
- 1:44:07Two balls and a strike.
- 1:44:20Never be afraid to admit you're wrong.
- 1:44:22Mr. Sutton did that tonight.
- 1:44:25Here's the pitch outside, three and one.
- 1:44:27Bad one here with foot runners at first and second.
- 1:44:30Bring up the left-hander, Bob Molinaro.
- 1:44:34The left-hander of the Kansas City Bullpen replaced Pucall
- 1:44:37when he came in the ball game, and that's Steve Mingori.
- 1:44:40Marty Patton, the right-hander, still throwing.
- 1:44:44Right-hander ready.
- 1:44:45Here's the pitch.
- 1:44:46Here's the swing and a base hit down the left-field line.
- 1:44:49Lamar Johnson holds up the second as Hurdle charges the ball
- 1:44:52and gets it into the infield.
- 1:44:54That's the second hit off of Pucall, and here comes Whitey Herzog.
- 1:45:00And he's going to bring in the left-hander, Mingori, to face Molinaro.
- 1:45:05So Pucall fits the third of an inning.
- 1:45:08He's allowed two hits.
- 1:45:09It's responsible for the two runners, Coburn at first
- 1:45:14and Lamar Johnson at second.
- 1:45:17Four to one, the White backs out in front here.
- 1:45:21Mingori making his 37th appearance of the year.
- 1:45:26He's won one.
- 1:45:27He's lost three.
- 1:45:29He's saved seven for the Royals, which his second hide is Robovsky's 16.
- 1:45:34And he has an earned run average of 2.68.
- 1:45:42So Pucall, making his first appearance as a Royal,
- 1:45:47allows two hits that resulted in a run scoring charged to split orbs
- 1:45:52in a third of an inning.
- 1:45:58Mingori this year has pitched a total of six innings against the White Sox,
- 1:46:06allowing only one run on five hits.
- 1:46:08He's walked a man and struck out three.
- 1:46:14Has the third best earned run average against the White Sox for any of the Royals,
- 1:46:17according to their reports, ERA of 1.50.
- 1:46:21So manager Whitey Herzog, again, playing the percentages
- 1:46:25that backfired on him earlier this inning.
- 1:46:31Well, the Fox the Gram reminding the fans that Boston is going to be in concert here
- 1:46:34on Saturday, September 2nd.
- 1:46:36White Sox will be out of town.
- 1:46:38I guess Santana is going to be here also, as well as...
- 1:46:44Eddie Bunney.
- 1:46:52Well, Len Sherman, who's Leon Sherman, who's listening tonight here at the ballpark,
- 1:46:56we're talking about defense.
- 1:47:00For some reason I thought that the center field was all the way to 445
- 1:47:06as part of Landis's career, but he says no, it was 415 feet when Landis played here.
- 1:47:12Then when Mary was here, it stated 415, then they moved it in to about 400.
- 1:47:18I guess that's why I remember Landis on the warning track.
- 1:47:21Here's a pitch of foot coming in as Brett, he's got it.
- 1:47:24Paul Harrow trying to put his way on.
- 1:47:27Punched it right into the net of George Brett, and that retires the side.
- 1:47:30In the inning, White Sox at an insurance run on three hits, no errors, two men left on.
- 1:47:37So we go to the ninth, it's the White Sox for Kansas City 1.
- 1:47:4140 Chevy Monza.
- 1:47:54Whoever thought a car that looked so good and moved so well would be quite so low, $2,659.
- 1:48:12A very stylish little number.
- 1:48:14The new Chevy Monza, $3,659, for a car so sporty and so well equipped, its price surprisingly low.
- 1:48:37See your local Chevrolet leader now.
- 1:48:41Lord Brown back at Kaniski Park as we go to the ninth, it'll be Darrell Porter,
- 1:48:45Quinn Hurdle, and Amos Otis, two left-handers and a right-hander to face Mike Brolick.
- 1:48:50In the bullpen for the White Sox, right-hander Laren LeGro.
- 1:48:55White Sox out in front here by a score of 4 to 1.
- 1:49:00Now talking about Landis and Berry, two outstanding centerfielders along the ilk of Johnny Mostel years ago.
- 1:49:11And we appreciate Leon Sherman's help in that matter.
- 1:49:15I didn't get a chance to see those guys that much because I was downstate at St. Louis Cardinal games most of the time.
- 1:49:23Working in Springfield and Peoria, and we didn't get too many White Sox color-casts in those days down there.
- 1:49:30WMAQ wasn't broadcasting the White Sox in those days.
- 1:49:35Darrell Porter tonight is two for three.
- 1:49:37He's accounted for the lone Kansas City run with a leadoff homer in the fourth inning.
- 1:49:41The White Sox had shut the Royals out for 17 innings when they hit that home run.
- 1:49:50White Sox now allowed Kansas City only one run in the last 22 innings.
- 1:50:05Schuller shut them out for three and two-thirds the other night.
- 1:50:08Wilber shut them out for two innings.
- 1:50:10Wilber Wood, Kravick shut them out on three hits and nine innings last night.
- 1:50:14And Broly has allowed only one run and eight innings here tonight, and that being the home run by Porter.
- 1:50:19Right-hander into the windup.
- 1:50:21Here's the pitch, and it's low.
- 1:50:23This is the only American League game going on right now as the Tigers have just defeated Toronto 5-2.
- 1:50:29Wilcox over more. Jason Thompson, the game's only homer, is 23rd of the year.
- 1:50:34Here's the 1-0 pitch, swinging a foul on a play at the upper deck on the left side near the skybox.
- 1:50:41One ball, one strike in the batter.
- 1:50:51Right-hander goes into the windup.
- 1:50:54Here's the pitch.
- 1:50:55Swing and a miss, right-two.
- 1:50:57That ball moving in on the left-handed hitter.
- 1:51:00Kansas City on Porter's home run took the lead in the top of the fourth, 1-0.
- 1:51:09But Eric Soderholm doubles home Ralph Gahr, who had tripled in the fourth to tie it up.
- 1:51:14Here's the 1-2 pitch outside of all.
- 1:51:17And the White Sox on Soderholm's second double of the night.
- 1:51:21Sits the lead in the sixth with two runs after Sox had nobody on and two out, and they rallied for two.
- 1:51:27Then Lamar Johnson, single homer, running the eighth to make it four to one.
- 1:51:30Here's the 2-2 delivery.
- 1:51:31Swing to the grounder, right side.
- 1:51:33Prior to his left has it.
- 1:51:34Throws, he got it.
- 1:51:37One out, two to go.
- 1:51:40As Clint Hurdle steps up, he has swung out to the left twice.
- 1:51:45He's grounded into a 3-6-3 double play and defensively he overran a ball in the left field corner,
- 1:51:53dropped to his left at the base of the wall that allowed the White Sox to score two runs.
- 1:51:58A ball was catchable.
- 1:52:02And that gave the White Sox the lead.
- 1:52:03Here's the pitch, swinging a foul out of play as it goes on the roof over the skybox.
- 1:52:12Four to one.
- 1:52:13White Sox out in front.
- 1:52:14They've out-hit the Royals 10 to 6.
- 1:52:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:52:22Swing to the grounder, takes a high hop into right field of base in.
- 1:52:25Prior to his left, couldn't come up with it as it took a high hop over his mid.
- 1:52:31And the Royals have a runner at first with one out, and Amos Otis the batter.
- 1:52:37Otis one for three tonight.
- 1:52:40Boy, Prior got a good jump on that ball that was there, but it high hopped him.
- 1:52:45He had to be about 6-3 in order to get that one.
- 1:52:50And the batter is Amos Otis, singled in the second, slide out the center in the fourth,
- 1:52:55and grounded to third in the seventh.
- 1:53:00Washington is going to run for hurdle.
- 1:53:07UL Washington running here.
- 1:53:12Washington has stolen 11 bases.
- 1:53:16They've got Willie Wilson on the bench.
- 1:53:18He has stolen 35, but the word is that Washington is the better base runner,
- 1:53:23though sheer speed it's Willie Wilson.
- 1:53:29His run really doesn't mean that much.
- 1:53:34Right hander ready, here's the pitch, runner not going, swing and a foul off to the right side.
- 1:53:44Ready, pot deck in the on deck circle.
- 1:53:49White Sox leading 4-1 trying to win the series, two games to one.
- 1:53:56It's a great season series here at Kavisky Park, 4-3 with a victory tonight.
- 1:54:01It would also put the Royals in second place.
- 1:54:04Right hander ready, runner not going, here's the pitch, swing and a base hit to the left.
- 1:54:07Now the Royals have a trying run up in the form of Freddie Potteck as Pat Mosley gets the ball back into the infield
- 1:54:13as Otis pulls the single to the left.
- 1:54:19And now Larry Doby, White Sox manager, goes to the mound.
- 1:54:25It's not a grow or right hander down in the bullpen.
- 1:54:30The White Sox at one time had a slew of left-handed reliefers, but right now
- 1:54:38Pablo Torreal with Wilbur Woods.
- 1:54:43Left handers in the starting rotation are Baumgart and Craving.
- 1:54:53Doby going to keep them in, we're going to get a pinch hitter here.
- 1:55:01Steve Braun is going to pinch hit for Potteck.
- 1:55:08Potteck was 0-3 against Foley, so Herzog going with the percentages, going with Steve Braun
- 1:55:15who they acquired for Jim Colbert from Seattle earlier this year.
- 1:55:20Hitting 268 with the Royals with 11 RBIs.
- 1:55:25Hitting 248 overall for the year, three homers, 26 RBIs.
- 1:55:30He represents the tying run.
- 1:55:34We're in the ninth.
- 1:55:37Right hander ready, here's the pitch and it's lower ball.
- 1:55:42Foley got Porter and Hurdle.
- 1:55:45Got out of the base hit, Washington running for him and Otis single to left.
- 1:55:50The tying run is at the plate.
- 1:55:55Right hander ready, working out of the stretch.
- 1:55:58Here's the pitch and that's the strike.
- 1:56:02He was up to Braun, one ball, one strike.
- 1:56:05Frank White in the on-deck circle.
- 1:56:08Legro continues to loosen up, White Sox will bend.
- 1:56:16White Sox has turned over one double play tonight, a second in this situation with F the ballgame.
- 1:56:21Right hander ready, here's the pitch, swinging it louder to third, going to second for one, relay, not in time.
- 1:56:35So Otis, the middle man, has retired five to four.
- 1:56:43Larry Dolby walking towards the umpire.
- 1:56:47Now he goes to the mound.
- 1:56:50Apparently Pryor got stepped on.
- 1:56:55Well, they're talking to Foley.
- 1:56:58Something happened to Foley.
- 1:57:09We're going to get a pitch hitter for Frank White.
- 1:57:12I don't know what Foley did to himself.
- 1:57:15Paul was grounded to Sotterholm.
- 1:57:21Sotterholm on that play, one for the double play, the second on the first, and they didn't get it.
- 1:57:26He had a chance to tag the runner, Washington, coming down the line.
- 1:57:31But he thought he could get the double play and the White Sox just didn't miss getting it.
- 1:57:35So the Royals have runners at first and third, and Laren Legro comes in for Foley here.
- 1:57:43With two out and two on, he had the name.
- 1:57:50What happened to Foley, we know not.
- 1:57:53He might have done something with his ankle the way he was walking off, I don't know.
- 1:58:00But Charlie Satt spotted it right away and went out to the mound.
- 1:58:06Tom Moquette from Oclair, Wisconsin, a left-hander.
- 1:58:11We'll pitch hit here.
- 1:58:14And the ninth with representing the tying run.
- 1:58:22He's at first and third and two out.
- 1:58:24Moquette hitting 205.
- 1:58:26He's hit three homers and driven in 25 runs.
- 1:58:29Frank White, while he was in there with one for two, he had singles grounded out to short.
- 1:58:33And they also got on on a walk.
- 1:58:39At the bottom of the ninth at Cincinnati, the Cardinals leading the Reds 4-3.
- 1:58:44The Pirates defeated Atlanta 5-1 tonight for their 10th straight.
- 1:58:47They moved into a tie for second with the Cubs.
- 1:58:51The Reds beat San Diego 1-0 at the end of two.
- 1:58:53The Phillies at Los Angeles just underway.
- 1:58:55Those are the only games in the National League tonight.
- 1:58:57Everything in the American League is over, with the exception of this game.
- 1:59:01This afternoon, Texas over Minnesota 4-1.
- 1:59:03Cleveland beat Milwaukee 9-8.
- 1:59:05And tonight, the Tigers snap Toronto's.
- 1:59:09Winning straight to sixth straight, defeating the Blue Jays 5-2.
- 1:59:14So Po kept the batter.
- 1:59:17And Pete Bukovic and the Cardinals just beat Cincinnati 4-3.
- 1:59:20The Reds are all over.
- 1:59:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:59:23Here's a swing and a fly ball to the right.
- 1:59:25Bolinero is there.
- 1:59:26This should be the ball game.
- 1:59:28He's got it.
- 1:59:29That's win.
- 1:59:31They have allowed the Kansas City Royals only one run in the last 23 innings of the
- 1:59:36season, two games to one.
- 1:59:50In the inning, no runs, two hits, no errors, two men left on.
- 1:59:56And 14,524 leave the ballpark on a happy note.
- 2:00:02The White Sox hit the season series against the Royals here in Chicago, four games to
- 2:00:06three.
- 2:00:07And we'll be back in just a minute with the Cardinals and the Highline.
