- 0:23Speaker 2: a hater. It is an emergency. We're not even time
- 0:26Speaker 2: machining on this Tuesday. We had two things happen that
- 0:29Speaker 2: was so cracking that, you know, We're doing an extra.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Show for y'all. You're welcome. You feel me?
- 0:36Speaker 2: But anyway, we'll get to.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Brandon or Brendan, right? I done already forgot. Sorsby.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Let's confirm on the Brandon-Brendan situation. You know? It's Brendan. Yes. Brendan.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Could have gone either way. You know what I mean?
- 0:54Speaker 1: We're going to holler at him in just a little bit, though. First,
- 0:57Speaker 1: game two. Of the NBA final game three rather of
- 1:00Speaker 1: the NBA finals.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:04Speaker 2: It was crazy over there. Ryan, you didn't have any
- 1:07Speaker 2: reason to be over near that part of town today.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Did you? Oh, no chance.
- 1:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I was really famous on the streets of New York yesterday.
- 1:16Speaker 2: And here's what I mean by that. I had to
- 1:18Speaker 2: go down off of 34th street on the West side
- 1:22Speaker 2: in order to pick up some electronic equipment.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:25Speaker 1: And so I go down there.
- 1:27Speaker 2: I always say that I am never more famous than
- 1:31Speaker 2: I am at specifically a basketball arena.
- 1:34Speaker 1: But generally speaking, a sporting event. That is my crew.
- 1:38Speaker 1: That is my room.
- 1:39Speaker 2: The whole goddamn city is an arena at this point. OK,
- 1:44Speaker 2: later in the day, I was down like.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Not even off Union Square.
- 1:49Speaker 2: I want to say I got off the train at
- 1:50Speaker 2: Spring Street or something like that.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Man, I got people stopping me. Like, can't even get
- 1:55Speaker 1: out the train station.
- 1:56Speaker 3: That's wild.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Type of situation, right? Because it's Nixon 4, right?
- 1:58Speaker 6: I'm like.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Don't do this to yourself. But anyway, right, you just
- 2:03Speaker 1: don't understand it.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Now, around Madison Square Garden, dude, it was all blue
- 2:07Speaker 2: and whites and all black unmarked.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Just going, roo, roo, roo, going around the block.
- 2:11Speaker 2: This was at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. Like, I
- 2:14Speaker 2: can't imagine what a hassle it was. They said they
- 2:16Speaker 2: cleared that bitch out at 4 o'clock or whatever. I
- 2:18Speaker 2: guess I got out of there in time.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Like, everywhere.
- 2:20Speaker 3: You just missed it before the line started forming. Yes.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Everywhere the game was going on.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Didn't matter what, wear old Knicks stuff, new Knicks stuff,
- 2:31Speaker 2: whatever Knicks stuff. I saw somebody wearing an Atlantic Division
- 2:35Speaker 2: champion t-shirt. They still print those? What are you talking about?
- 2:41Speaker 2: It was everywhere that this was going on. And then
- 2:43Speaker 2: game three gets started. It's so loud in there. Obviously,
- 2:47Speaker 2: I was not at the game, right? And to explain
- 2:49Speaker 2: to people.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Who were like, First of all, you saw them prices.
- 2:53Speaker 2: The prices came down, but the truth is that was
- 2:55Speaker 2: for people who love the Knicks, not just people who
- 2:57Speaker 2: want to go to the game.
- 2:59Speaker 1: You know what I mean?
- 2:59Speaker 2: It's the same thing I say about them Jay-Z concerts.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Those are not for people who just want to go
- 3:03Speaker 2: to a concert. It's for people who love Jay-Z. Let
- 3:05Speaker 2: them have the seats. Let them have the time, whatever
- 3:08Speaker 2: it is. Man, it's so loud. Ryan, I ain't never
- 3:11Speaker 2: heard nobody get booed during the goddamn national anthem, man.
- 3:13Speaker 2: They put that man on camera during the national anthem,
- 3:16Speaker 2: and he did the thing where, like, he sir-yes-sirs it
- 3:19Speaker 2: during the national anthem.
- 3:20Speaker 3: He sir-yes-sirs, but you can see the smirk when he
- 3:22Speaker 3: gets booed, too.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but doesn't he ever notice that nobody else is
- 3:26Speaker 2: doing that thing except for him?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Oh, no, never notices.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That doesn't give him any measure of Paul's Right? Nobody
- 3:33Speaker 1: be like, hey, man, you can just put your head.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Nah, nah, nah.
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'm a soldier. Right? You know, he just go ahead.
- 3:38Speaker 1: He do it like that. I mean, technically, he's commander
- 3:40Speaker 1: in chief.
- 3:40Speaker 3: I do not associate Donald Trump with measure of pause.
- 3:44Speaker 3: Just as a general, as a general warning assertion.
- 3:48Speaker 1: There's something to that.
- 3:49Speaker 2: They put him on that camera and them boos was like,
- 3:53Speaker 2: they was just waiting.
- 3:54Speaker 1: When they going to do it? When they going to
- 3:56Speaker 1: do it? And they left the camera on him.
- 3:58Speaker 5: Right?
- 3:59Speaker 2: Like I saw somebody put something on Twitter about the
- 4:00Speaker 2: boos was so loud.
- 4:02Speaker 1: That's why they took the camera off. No, no, no, no, no.
- 4:05Speaker 1: They let it rock. And when he got the booze,
- 4:08Speaker 1: you are right.
- 4:09Speaker 2: He had a little bit of a smirk, but that still,
- 4:13Speaker 2: that don't feel good, right? But anyway, we dealt with that.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Got Donald Trump on the screen. They did it during
- 4:18Speaker 2: the national anthem. They booed his ass into the ground.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Gang is going, San Antonio goes hard off the top, right?
- 4:24Speaker 1: And what happens?
- 4:25Speaker 2: It seems my criticism at the end of game two
- 4:28Speaker 2: was why would you run a pick and pop instead
- 4:30Speaker 2: of a pick and roll? Every time that he sets
- 4:32Speaker 2: a screen, Victor being he, You got to roll hard. Now,
- 4:36Speaker 2: the argument that people have made to me that they
- 4:38Speaker 2: say the Spurs make about this is that they're trying
- 4:41Speaker 2: to preserve him. They're constantly keeping him in the paint
- 4:44Speaker 2: requires him to expend a lot more energy.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And I think that's true.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And I think that that's borne out by if you
- 4:50Speaker 2: look at the stats, I want to say last year
- 4:52Speaker 2: he shot eight point eight three pointers a game.
- 4:54Speaker 1: And that went down to five this year, which implies
- 4:57Speaker 1: to me.
- 4:58Speaker 2: As he gets stronger, he will go inside more. It's
- 5:02Speaker 2: not terribly different than Kevin Durant played two guard as
- 5:06Speaker 2: a rookie for the Sonics because he just didn't have
- 5:08Speaker 2: it physically to even play small forward.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And we're not talking about small forward is what we
- 5:14Speaker 1: want from Victor. We want Victor to go inside.
- 5:16Speaker 2: But no, they ran that play that all of us
- 5:19Speaker 2: would run if it was a video game. Send that
- 5:22Speaker 2: eight foot tall dude near the bucket and then throw
- 5:25Speaker 2: it up and just see if he can go get it.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Sometimes he was dunking it. Sometimes he was just pity
- 5:30Speaker 2: patting that bitch off the glass. Sometimes whatever it was,
- 5:32Speaker 2: but it was like, oh, we got three dunks early.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Now to me, him getting a bunch of dunks early
- 5:36Speaker 2: isn't like Charles Barkley getting a bunch of dunks early. Right.
- 5:40Speaker 2: But it did establish not hanging out outside like that anymore.
- 5:47Speaker 2: That was probably the greatest failing they had. We saw
- 5:49Speaker 2: them do more to get in the paint in game
- 5:51Speaker 2: two in the second half when Victor was actually excellent
- 5:54Speaker 2: in spite of everything coming apart at the end of
- 5:55Speaker 2: the game. But anyway, they established that early, but it
- 5:58Speaker 2: went like every game had gone in.
- 6:00Speaker 1: This series, right? Like Spurs go hard early.
- 6:03Speaker 2: And then the Knicks, when they took that lead back
- 6:05Speaker 2: at the end of the second quarter, it was like that,
- 6:09Speaker 2: which is typically a sign of which team is the
- 6:11Speaker 2: better team. The one that could just be like, all right, dawg,
- 6:15Speaker 2: let's go do this right.
- 6:15Speaker 1: 12.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Oh, run in two minutes.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Yeah. And by the way, outside of like the 12, Oh,
- 6:20Speaker 2: I forget what the run was.
- 6:21Speaker 1: The Knicks outscored about 18 points in that quarter.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Like it was a pretty thorough domination and one that
- 6:28Speaker 2: gave the feeling that this was about to be a wrap,
- 6:32Speaker 2: but a couple of things are happening in the first
- 6:35Speaker 2: half that I feel like bore out the way this
- 6:38Speaker 2: went in the second half. One thing that happened that
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think, well, I guess it's kind of, Two of
- 6:43Speaker 2: them are together. But anyway, I'm going to say all
- 6:44Speaker 2: the things, right? Victor throwing Jalen Brunson on the ground
- 6:50Speaker 2: and then laughing at him after the fact.
- 6:53Speaker 1: That was hilarious. I don't care what anybody says. That
- 6:57Speaker 1: was hilarious. And I love the.
- 6:59Speaker 2: Fact that he does it, right? Like, you got to remember, man,
- 7:03Speaker 2: at some point in his life, it was a long
- 7:05Speaker 2: time ago before he got really good at this basketball
- 7:08Speaker 2: thing like that. Victor was just a big old gangly,
- 7:11Speaker 2: goofy kid that was probably getting picked on until he'd
- 7:14Speaker 2: had enough And then all of a sudden, he had
- 7:17Speaker 2: to establish the perimeter.
- 7:18Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:19Speaker 2: Just start wildly swinging, and your mama come have a
- 7:22Speaker 2: conversation with you about it or anything else, right? But,
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know, he has certainly been picked on. And what
- 7:28Speaker 2: seems clear is that when Victor feels as though he
- 7:30Speaker 2: has been picked on too much, he lashes out.
- 7:33Speaker 3: The height difference between Victor and Jalen Brunson is the
- 7:38Speaker 3: same as someone like Jalen Brunson and someone who's like 4'9, 4'10.
- 7:42Speaker 1: That is correct. Just to get a.
- 7:45Speaker 3: A reference for the scale we're dealing with here.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Yes. So think about this though.
- 7:49Speaker 2: He'd had enough of Nas Reed and he lashed out
- 7:52Speaker 2: and elbowed him in the mouth. Every time they get
- 7:54Speaker 2: near Victor, the Knicks do somebody puts two hands on him.
- 7:57Speaker 1: Like this is an old school physical.
- 7:59Speaker 2: The only thing that's missing by and large is the
- 8:02Speaker 2: old school hard fouls, but they are allowing a level
- 8:05Speaker 2: of contact, especially off the ball. That is from a
- 8:08Speaker 2: previous era of basketball, but the, Jalen.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Brunson got up on Victor like that.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Victor wrapped his arms around him and threw him down,
- 8:18Speaker 2: stood over him, went back to what he was doing.
- 8:23Speaker 2: And then when Jalen Brunson got up, he didn't even
- 8:25Speaker 2: come try to push him around or anything, right? He
- 8:27Speaker 2: just got up and started pointing up like he had
- 8:30Speaker 2: some sort of issue. It looked like when Chris Paul
- 8:32Speaker 2: was fussing at DeAndre Jordan that time, right? And he's
- 8:35Speaker 2: pushing up and Victor laughs at him as he goes
- 8:38Speaker 2: and goes and plays defense over there. Meanwhile, at the
- 8:42Speaker 2: exact same time, it was Carl that Kelton Johnson was guarding, right?
- 8:48Speaker 1: And muscling him up at the same time. Okay? Why
- 8:54Speaker 1: that is important to me.
- 8:58Speaker 2: The Spurs have decided that they're going to get physical
- 9:01Speaker 2: with the Knicks. And something has led them to believe
- 9:04Speaker 2: that the Knicks ain't built for it. Because the Knicks
- 9:06Speaker 2: have those guys that are bigger, but they've not necessarily
- 9:09Speaker 2: played with an aggressive physicality, I guess is.
- 9:13Speaker 1: The way to put it.
- 9:14Speaker 2: What I feel like I have seen as a result
- 9:18Speaker 2: of that, the physicality against Towns seemed to make him shrink.
- 9:27Speaker 1: He only had, what, 11 points in that game, I
- 9:29Speaker 1: want to say?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Something like that.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:31Speaker 2: And they were touching him up whenever they could. And
- 9:34Speaker 2: you could see how frustrated he was in the first
- 9:36Speaker 2: half over it.
- 9:37Speaker 1: He got a bucket on.
- 9:38Speaker 2: They doing a lot of screaming on Luke Cornett, which
- 9:40Speaker 2: is like, guys, guys, come on.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Remember Josh Hart got.
- 9:45Speaker 2: Josh Hart seemed to get mad at Luke Cornett for
- 9:46Speaker 2: no reason to try to get up.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And start pushing him.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:50Speaker 2: You're playing yourselves by doing that one right there. Like,
- 9:52Speaker 2: just just, just guys, guys, guys, guys, it's Luke Cornette, right?
- 9:55Speaker 2: Like that's not, you're not, you're not, you're not setting
- 9:58Speaker 2: the tone when you do this, right? But Towns seemed
- 10:01Speaker 2: to shrink a bit at the physicality. Also Towns went
- 10:03Speaker 2: back to committing some not too wise fouls. But Brunson,
- 10:08Speaker 2: Brunson is not shrinking in the face of the physicality.
- 10:12Speaker 2: Brunson is behaving like short people behave in moments like those.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I ain't no punk, man.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And they are doing, or the Knicks seem from here,
- 10:26Speaker 2: you can tell me if I'm wrong, but the Knicks
- 10:28Speaker 2: seem to have done what I thought the Spurs should
- 10:33Speaker 2: try to goad them into doing, which is turn this
- 10:39Speaker 2: into Iso Brunson. Get it to a place where that
- 10:43Speaker 2: guy slows down the offense because he got to show
- 10:47Speaker 2: them Who's boss?
- 10:48Speaker 1: And watch him dribble the air out the ball.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I was watching TV this morning before we got in here,
- 10:53Speaker 2: and they showed a possession where that dude dribbled the
- 10:56Speaker 2: ball for 21 seconds of the shot clock. And when
- 11:02Speaker 2: he does it, in part because Brunson doesn't have a
- 11:04Speaker 2: wiggly game, he's not getting it done quick, right? Like
- 11:08Speaker 2: he's doing all the jabs, he's doing all the... And
- 11:12Speaker 2: that's and you see it on his face.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Right. They have got him super frustrated.
- 11:17Speaker 2: Like Mike Brown needs to have one of them film
- 11:19Speaker 2: sessions that makes everybody feel a little uncomfortable. But it
- 11:23Speaker 2: involves specifically pointing your finger at number 11 and saying,
- 11:29Speaker 2: I don't care how many points you had. You are
- 11:32Speaker 2: here messing it up for everybody when you do it
- 11:34Speaker 2: like that.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And the truth is, that's what happened.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I don't think there's any other way around that. The
- 11:41Speaker 2: other part was, and I get why they feel this way,
- 11:43Speaker 2: they decided their brand of physical ball got everybody into
- 11:47Speaker 2: foul trouble. I'll also note this. I don't know how
- 11:50Speaker 2: big a deal this is, but I don't think it's
- 11:52Speaker 2: a small one. One thing that I had noticed in
- 11:55Speaker 2: that crazy month they had was, again, Landry Schammett was
- 11:58Speaker 2: playing like number 44. At last game, he went back
- 12:02Speaker 2: to playing like Landry Schammett. You know, like those little
- 12:07Speaker 2: things were happening at the margins with guys like that.
- 12:10Speaker 2: And Deuce McBride seemed to be hitting every shot that
- 12:12Speaker 2: they had this time.
- 12:14Speaker 1: They got it out of Jordan Clarkson.
- 12:15Speaker 2: And one day we will talk about how Jordan Clarkson
- 12:20Speaker 2: came into the NBA at age 22, looking completely different
- 12:24Speaker 2: than he does at this age today. right now like
- 12:28Speaker 2: in a way normally people start with this youthful stuff
- 12:32Speaker 2: and then mature into something a little bit more chilled
- 12:34Speaker 2: out hell no he went completely in the opposite direction
- 12:38Speaker 2: like Jordan Clarkson if you look at the picture of
- 12:40Speaker 2: Jordan Clarkson when he first got to the league versus
- 12:42Speaker 2: now you know what he looked like Jordan Clarkson looked
- 12:44Speaker 2: like he got five years Because he is going to school,
- 12:47Speaker 2: doing the training, prayers and vitamins and everything else. And
- 12:50Speaker 2: his cousin was like, yo, give me a ride to
- 12:51Speaker 2: the store right fast. He's like, sure, that's my cousin.
- 12:54Speaker 1: And the next thing you know, his cousin came out
- 12:55Speaker 1: the store was like, go, go, go, go, go, go, go.
- 12:58Speaker 1: And then they got caught. And he was like, your honor,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I didn't have anything. I didn't mean I did what
- 13:01Speaker 1: it was.
- 13:02Speaker 5: Right.
- 13:03Speaker 1: And he was just in that motherfucker, man. Then he
- 13:04Speaker 1: came out and he did what he did, what he
- 13:06Speaker 1: had to do to survive.
- 13:07Speaker 2: You know, just what it was.
- 13:10Speaker 1: But now that that's what it seemed like to me.
- 13:13Speaker 2: Is that the Knicks responded to the physicality at the
- 13:17Speaker 2: top in the two worst ways that they possibly could have, right?
- 13:24Speaker 2: On the other side, what you'd hope your superstar player
- 13:28Speaker 2: to do, he did.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Showed up, right?
- 13:32Speaker 2: Stephon Castle, who, by the way, that's going to be
- 13:36Speaker 2: a stressful ride. for Spurs fans. This is what it's
- 13:40Speaker 2: going to be. This is a tough one because he
- 13:42Speaker 2: got one.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Problem, man.
- 13:43Speaker 2: He ain't good at dribbling and he has a dribble-dependent game.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Also, he is not scared to shoot and that is
- 13:51Speaker 3: not necessarily a compliment.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeah, but I tell you what else, he's also just
- 13:55Speaker 1: generally not scared.
- 13:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 13:57Speaker 1: All right? Like, they was ready to tussle a bit, right?
- 14:02Speaker 2: But it's so funny, like, looking at the box score
- 14:04Speaker 2: and as he was making the buckets, Castle's end result
- 14:08Speaker 2: felt much better than it felt watching him play. It
- 14:12Speaker 2: did not feel like I was watching somebody play well.
- 14:14Speaker 2: Quite honestly, it looked like somebody who had fallen for
- 14:17Speaker 2: the same trick as Jalen Brunson. dylan harper went 5
- 14:21Speaker 2: for 18 and i did not feel nearly as uneasy
- 14:24Speaker 2: about what was going on when he had to ball
- 14:26Speaker 2: as i would have with castle.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah the thing about castle is just he's very demonstrative
- 14:30Speaker 3: so everything he does you can just kind of it's
- 14:32Speaker 3: just very obvious and out there.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Well he also so he and harper both have the
- 14:37Speaker 1: same thing to me which.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Is sometimes like i said sometimes i'm slow sometimes i'm
- 14:42Speaker 2: fast you're not exactly sure which it's going to be
- 14:44Speaker 2: but they both have it where um My man said
- 14:47Speaker 2: that Castle ain't going to play very long because he
- 14:49Speaker 2: said his knees are going to go out because it's
- 14:51Speaker 2: a lot of sudden stops and then slow down and
- 14:54Speaker 2: go the other way or whatever it is. But hey,
- 14:57Speaker 2: when the buckets are falling, you got it.
- 15:00Speaker 1: They're falling.
- 15:01Speaker 2: But man, I don't know. If I were the Spurs,
- 15:06Speaker 2: I'd have been a little bit shook about how it went.
- 15:08Speaker 2: The thing for Victor is this, and I don't feel
- 15:10Speaker 2: like we've seen him really be like this yet in
- 15:13Speaker 2: the postseason.
- 15:14Speaker 1: He put up 32 points in that game. on 18 shots.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Now you have to do it again.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Right?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Like, I don't want to sound like Shaq. Well, Shaq,
- 15:22Speaker 1: what does he need to do? He needs to dominate.
- 15:24Speaker 1: He needs to put up 40 points or 25 rebounds. Well, shit.
- 15:29Speaker 1: When you put it.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Like that, Shaq, it all, it all seems so clear. But,
- 15:34Speaker 2: It's got to be that same thing again, though. There's
- 15:38Speaker 2: no room for days off anymore. It's about the focus.
- 15:41Speaker 2: I've talked about this with Last Dance with Jordan, and
- 15:44Speaker 2: I think it's the most telling. I think the most
- 15:45Speaker 2: important line in there is, I forget who it was
- 15:49Speaker 2: that was saying it, but they made the point that
- 15:50Speaker 2: what made Michael Jordan better than everybody else was his
- 15:55Speaker 2: ability to no matter what, to be absolutely present in
- 15:59Speaker 2: the moment that was before him. Nothing else mattered in
- 16:03Speaker 2: the world except what was going on right then and there.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And when you think about it, it explains what Jordan
- 16:10Speaker 2: was just about all the way through, right? Especially once
- 16:13Speaker 2: it hit that critical mass. But we have years in
- 16:16Speaker 2: series where we talked about, oh, Jordan didn't get it
- 16:18Speaker 2: done when he was younger or whatever, what happened in 95.
- 16:21Speaker 2: But we don't have a lot of, damn, Mike just
- 16:23Speaker 2: shit the bed, that game. Maybe you don't play well,
- 16:27Speaker 2: but it's never the, oh man, he just didn't have it, right?
- 16:30Speaker 2: Victor from here on out, if they're going to win,
- 16:32Speaker 2: you may not have to score 32 every time, but
- 16:35Speaker 2: you have to show up like you have the last,
- 16:37Speaker 2: the majority of the last six quarters. That's what your
- 16:41Speaker 2: team needs. Because otherwise, you're depending on 20-year-old Dylan.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Harper, 21-year-old O.C.
- 16:44Speaker 2: Stephon Castle, De'Aaron Fox, who to me, hey, man, you
- 16:54Speaker 2: got to be the old man. That's that's what you're
- 16:56Speaker 2: supposed to be, right? He's got to be that guy
- 17:00Speaker 2: at this point because, hey, man, he can get to
- 17:03Speaker 2: the bucket. He can get those shots, even though he
- 17:05Speaker 2: went four for 14. Like I said, I felt like
- 17:07Speaker 2: it was a better game than him going four for 14.
- 17:10Speaker 1: That's what it's got to be. But they just withstood
- 17:13Speaker 1: as hostile environment. as there would be, right?
- 17:16Speaker 2: I thought, and I think this bore out, that the
- 17:18Speaker 2: Knicks would have to worry about being a little shaky
- 17:21Speaker 2: early because it would be so much that was going on.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But the fact that the Spurs stood tall through that.
- 17:27Speaker 2: Weathered that storm on the comeback, and then in the
- 17:29Speaker 2: second half still got it done.
- 17:30Speaker 1: Hey, baby, we got a series.
- 17:33Speaker 2: And it is not a series where people like the
- 17:35Speaker 2: winner of game four is going to win this.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Maybe not.
- 17:38Speaker 1: I don't feel nearly that confident.
- 17:39Speaker 2: I don't feel like the Spurs are done just in case,
- 17:41Speaker 2: just because they go down 3-1. Like, I think we
- 17:44Speaker 2: have a series. But I'm going to tell you this.
- 17:47Speaker 2: When I speak for New York, I feel pretty confident.
- 17:49Speaker 2: When I say I speak for New York, I speak
- 17:50Speaker 2: for people in New York. Probably primarily people in New
- 17:54Speaker 2: York who are not from New York. But this is
- 17:56Speaker 2: about what's going on in the city, okay?
- 17:58Speaker 1: It was 2-0. Knicks.
- 18:01Speaker 2: The Knicks going down 2-1 made things interesting. If the
- 18:07Speaker 2: Knicks go down to 2-0, not going to lie, it's
- 18:12Speaker 2: going to be kind of hilarious.
- 18:15Speaker 1: But if the Knicks go down 2-3, it's going.
- 18:19Speaker 3: To be unsafe. I will not be leaving my house.
- 18:22Speaker 3: It's not going to be.
- 18:23Speaker 1: It's not going to be.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Because look, man, they're going to be asking.
- 18:27Speaker 1: Me for answers on the street. Well, buddy, what are
- 18:31Speaker 1: we going to do?
- 18:33Speaker 2: First of all, take your hand off my shoulder. Let's
- 18:36Speaker 2: start there. That's the first thing we're going to do
- 18:41Speaker 2: is give me three feet. That's where we go start.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I needed those three feet. I greatly appreciate you.
- 18:50Speaker 1: Man, I do not want this season to end, man.
- 18:53Speaker 2: I would love for this to go all the way
- 18:55Speaker 2: to seven because, man, not only has this been great.
- 18:58Speaker 2: Can you imagine if this series had ended in four?
- 19:00Speaker 2: What were we going to talk about until I went
- 19:01Speaker 2: on vacation?
- 19:02Speaker 1: I have no idea.
- 19:04Speaker 3: Me neither.
- 19:10Speaker 2: This is Brendan Sorsby's story that I had kind of
- 19:12Speaker 2: been paying attention to, but wasn't really paying attention to
- 19:15Speaker 2: until yesterday when apparently this became the end of college
- 19:18Speaker 2: sports forever. And so, Ryan, you correct me if I'm
- 19:22Speaker 2: wrong here. Sorsby started at Indiana. And in 2022, when
- 19:28Speaker 2: he was a backup or he was not playing, he
- 19:32Speaker 2: made a lot of bets on Indiana football.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I want to say 40 bets on Indiana football.
- 19:35Speaker 3: A lot of bets in general, but also a lot
- 19:37Speaker 3: of bets on Indiana football.
- 19:38Speaker 2: On Indiana football, the one that jumped out is that
- 19:40Speaker 2: in one game, he bet on the quarterback to go
- 19:43Speaker 2: under on yards, which is, that's an insider trading situation, right?
- 19:48Speaker 2: Which I don't, We'll get to more of it, but
- 19:53Speaker 2: that doesn't offend me on the integrity of the game meter,
- 19:57Speaker 2: quite to say.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Like, you're taking your own under. Hey, that's a little
- 20:01Speaker 1: bit different.
- 20:02Speaker 3: The Terry Rozier, as it's often referred to.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Yeah, the Jate Porter, right? Like, those are a little
- 20:07Speaker 2: bit different.
- 20:08Speaker 1: But anyway....
- 20:11Speaker 2: The kid had a gambling issue. And I can say
- 20:13Speaker 2: kid because at the time he was 18 when this happened.
- 20:15Speaker 2: But he had a gambling issue. I think he bet
- 20:16Speaker 2: something like $ 90, 000, which is kind of crazy, sign of
- 20:19Speaker 2: the times situation or whatever it is. He wound up
- 20:22Speaker 2: transferring to Cincinnati. And I guess it's at Cincinnati that
- 20:25Speaker 2: he came forward. At whatever point it was, he has
- 20:29Speaker 2: gone into treatment for his gambling addiction. He has the
- 20:32Speaker 2: Gamblers Anonymous meetings, all of these things. But there was
- 20:35Speaker 2: an acknowledgement that there is a problem and that he
- 20:37Speaker 2: has been working on that problem. The other thing that's
- 20:40Speaker 2: important to note is that he has NFL potential and
- 20:43Speaker 2: was probably the most talented quarterback that was in the
- 20:46Speaker 2: transfer portal this year. And he went to Texas Tech,
- 20:48Speaker 2: where Texas Tech got a booster named Cody Campbell, who's
- 20:51Speaker 2: got a billion dollars, who's made himself a significant power
- 20:54Speaker 2: player in college football. Basically, they're the new SMU. And
- 20:59Speaker 2: I don't mean that in the sense that they're cheating.
- 21:01Speaker 2: But what I mean that is in the sense is
- 21:02Speaker 2: that in Texas, you take the football thing really, really seriously.
- 21:06Speaker 2: And they're all these Texas, unlike the other states, has
- 21:09Speaker 2: all these other smaller but still big schools that play
- 21:13Speaker 2: at this level of football. Right. It's like six, seven, eight,
- 21:16Speaker 2: you know, like high level FBS schools in Texas.
- 21:21Speaker 3: There's a lot of them.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:23Speaker 2: But what always happens is there's some cadre of rich
- 21:26Speaker 2: people who decides, why can't we? They all want to
- 21:28Speaker 2: be as good as Texas, basically. And so somebody puts
- 21:31Speaker 2: their money where their mouth is, and they decide they're
- 21:33Speaker 2: going to be as good as Texas. And Texas Tech
- 21:35Speaker 2: is the latest one, and they can get top-notch players
- 21:39Speaker 2: in there.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And anyway, Cody Campbell.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Get these people to go to Wubbock.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Couldn't be me.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Cody Campbell is not going to let a little gambling
- 21:49Speaker 2: situation stop him from getting a really good quarterback.
- 21:53Speaker 1: And so he is there.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Because of the gambling and the likes, the NCAA gave
- 21:59Speaker 2: him a.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Permanent ban, right?
- 22:01Speaker 3: Yes, I believe he was permanently banned.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Okay. He hired Jeffrey Kessler. And if you know anything
- 22:08Speaker 1: about Jeffrey Kessler, look him up.
- 22:09Speaker 2: That is a high-powered attorney, a guy that represents the
- 22:13Speaker 2: NFL Players Association, for example.
- 22:16Speaker 1: You can go through and get his list of clients, man.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It's pretty staggering.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Anyway, They got a temporary injunction to allow.
- 22:25Speaker 1: Soresby to play this season.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And that hit college football media like a ton of bricks.
- 22:34Speaker 2: And the message that they received from this was that
- 22:38Speaker 2: if a player is caught gambling, oh well, what's the
- 22:45Speaker 2: big deal? Now, I have had a lot of thoughts
- 22:55Speaker 2: about this that are kind of sort of.
- 22:58Speaker 1: For me to a degree, all over the place, but
- 22:59Speaker 1: I feel like they all.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Really come back to, like, I don't know if it's
- 23:03Speaker 2: the same place, but kind of staying in the same key,
- 23:06Speaker 2: I guess is.
- 23:07Speaker 1: The way that I would wind up putting this.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I think what frustrated me in watching the response from
- 23:14Speaker 2: my colleagues is how many of them just immediately landed at,
- 23:20Speaker 2: If you are caught gambling on your own team, you
- 23:24Speaker 2: should be banned from playing.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Hard stop, right?
- 23:28Speaker 2: Because the question I kept asking as I watched all
- 23:32Speaker 2: the responses pour in was, hey, has anybody read the decision? Right?
- 23:38Speaker 1: Was the ruling just?
- 23:41Speaker 2: And please understand, the real reason this injunction matters is
- 23:47Speaker 2: because of how long it takes.
- 23:49Speaker 1: To resolve such a thing.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Which is to say, an injunction doesn't necessarily mean that
- 23:56Speaker 2: Sorsby has won the whole damn thing. What the injunction
- 24:00Speaker 2: meant and what the judge said was that there is
- 24:04Speaker 2: a probability that Sorsby would win if we took this
- 24:09Speaker 2: to court. And since that's the case, he will suffer
- 24:13Speaker 2: permanent injury if you don't let him.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Participate this year.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Now, the judge centered his participation largely around having access
- 24:22Speaker 2: to the team and the community and all the things
- 24:25Speaker 2: around the team because he's a gambling addict. Then the
- 24:31Speaker 2: next part of it is like draft prep and obviously
- 24:34Speaker 2: the money that he would not receive.
- 24:36Speaker 1: But the point is he could never get those things back.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Therefore, the injunction is in place because it would be
- 24:41Speaker 2: too much to take those things away from him given
- 24:44Speaker 2: that there is a probability that he would win the
- 24:47Speaker 2: case on.
- 24:48Speaker 3: The back end.
- 24:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I found A, the fact that they thought he might
- 24:54Speaker 2: win on the back end to be interesting. But number two,
- 25:00Speaker 2: I ask this question, and I don't know if anybody
- 25:03Speaker 2: else is asking this question, but I think.
- 25:05Speaker 1: This is important.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Is a zero tolerance policy for a player that, as
- 25:14Speaker 2: I read this, the NCAA does not deem to be
- 25:17Speaker 2: an integrity risk. They do not believe that he behaved
- 25:20Speaker 2: in any way intended to truly influence the outcome of games.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Do we really want to have a zero tolerance policy
- 25:32Speaker 2: with the 18-year-olds, given the landscape that we have now,
- 25:39Speaker 2: how susceptible these people are going to be to falling
- 25:42Speaker 2: into this same trap, and given that you need to
- 25:48Speaker 2: be able to create a world that encourages the young
- 25:51Speaker 2: men who have problems to go get help? Enacting a
- 25:57Speaker 2: zero tolerance policy makes it much more difficult for those
- 26:02Speaker 2: guys to go get help or make the decision to
- 26:05Speaker 2: go get help.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And I'll have you know, just as a parallel example to.
- 26:09Speaker 2: This, I have talked to people and specifically women who
- 26:14Speaker 2: work around matters of domestic violence.
- 26:17Speaker 1: Take a case like Ray Rice.
- 26:19Speaker 2: And what those people have made the point of is
- 26:22Speaker 2: that if you enact a zero tolerance policy, You create
- 26:27Speaker 2: a world where it is actually, in many cases, more
- 26:30Speaker 2: dangerous to the women because the stakes are so high
- 26:34Speaker 2: and they are often still married to or with these
- 26:36Speaker 2: men and wish to still be with these men. And
- 26:38Speaker 2: so the idea that in order for them to get relief,
- 26:41Speaker 2: they have to create a world where it makes it
- 26:43Speaker 2: impossible for down the line for that man to work,
- 26:48Speaker 2: which also could potentially make that man even madder and
- 26:50Speaker 2: more likely.
- 26:51Speaker 1: To kill you.
- 26:52Speaker 2: You have to ask yourself whether the idea of zero
- 26:56Speaker 2: tolerance is more important than what zero tolerance means in application.
- 27:04Speaker 2: And I am not sure that the zero tolerance as
- 27:07Speaker 2: described works in application. Now, the argument that's made, and
- 27:14Speaker 2: I think is an understandable one, is once people don't
- 27:17Speaker 2: believe in the truth of what it is that they
- 27:20Speaker 2: are seeing, then the integrity of the game falls apart
- 27:23Speaker 2: and basically his entire foundation goes away.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Obviously, I agree with that.
- 27:29Speaker 2: We talked about this when the gambling stuff happened with
- 27:30Speaker 2: the NBA, with Chauncey Billups and all those guys.
- 27:33Speaker 1: That's the point that I made.
- 27:34Speaker 2: And I believe that there is absolutely something to that.
- 27:39Speaker 2: I get where it is that you're coming from. But
- 27:41Speaker 2: I think you got to go think about this to
- 27:43Speaker 2: a second level. And I think the second level is
- 27:45Speaker 2: very important. And a big part of why the second
- 27:47Speaker 2: level is important in this case is is because we're
- 27:50Speaker 2: dealing with young people. Which also leads to another interesting
- 27:56Speaker 2: part of this decision, Ryan, which is part of what
- 27:59Speaker 2: the judge had to say about this was that given
- 28:02Speaker 2: the inundation of gambling and the relationship that the NCAA
- 28:05Speaker 2: member schools have with gambling, it feels a touch disingenuous
- 28:09Speaker 2: for them to kick somebody out permanently because they got
- 28:12Speaker 2: into the same business that you got into.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:16Speaker 2: I think.
- 28:19Speaker 3: It is very interesting how universal the condemnation of this was.
- 28:25Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 28:25Speaker 3: For, I think people are just like trained to treat
- 28:29Speaker 3: everything like, like everyone who does this is Pete Rose.
- 28:34Speaker 6: Yes.
- 28:34Speaker 3: And I think that is, I think that's a comparison
- 28:38Speaker 3: that's apples and bowling balls for a lot of reasons.
- 28:40Speaker 2: But also the only reason that Pete Rose wound up
- 28:43Speaker 2: with the real lifetime suspension situation that he had was.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Because he kept lying.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:49Speaker 1: If he had stopped.
- 28:50Speaker 2: Lying, they'd have probably let his ass back after a year.
- 28:53Speaker 2: But he lied about it for 15 years. That was
- 28:57Speaker 2: what ultimately doomed him, right?
- 29:00Speaker 1: That isn't what happened here.
- 29:03Speaker 2: It's just not the case in this situation is what
- 29:06Speaker 2: went down. So I'm not saying that the idea of
- 29:09Speaker 2: zero tolerance, I don't understand it. But I am saying
- 29:13Speaker 2: everybody immediately coming down in the fashion that they did
- 29:16Speaker 2: to me implied that people did not really give this
- 29:18Speaker 2: that much thought and it became an outrage contest.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Very, very quickly. And then you go ask all these
- 29:23Speaker 1: coaches what they think about it.
- 29:24Speaker 2: And now all these schools are saying, oh, well, how
- 29:27Speaker 2: about we'll just boycott and we just we're just not
- 29:29Speaker 2: going to play against Texas Tech anymore.
- 29:33Speaker 1: Yeah. How about that?
- 29:33Speaker 2: Which is not going to happen in application because it's
- 29:36Speaker 2: way too much money on the line. And it's these
- 29:38Speaker 2: are they stopped doing them television bowl bans a long
- 29:41Speaker 2: time ago.
- 29:41Speaker 3: Right once you start once you start saying we're not
- 29:44Speaker 3: going to play this opponent you're essentially ripping up your
- 29:46Speaker 3: tv contract yes and no one's giving up all that.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Money let me tell you who really can't afford to
- 29:52Speaker 2: do nothing like that the big 12 okay Those things
- 29:58Speaker 2: are not likely to happen.
- 30:00Speaker 1: But there are other things because.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I did a lot of I did a lot of
- 30:04Speaker 2: talking with lawyers this morning as we got in to
- 30:09Speaker 2: talk about, you know, as I prepare to get in
- 30:12Speaker 2: and talk about doing this.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Tom Mars, who I.
- 30:16Speaker 2: Did not talk to about this, but I did talk
- 30:18Speaker 2: to Tom Mars for the article I did in Vanity
- 30:20Speaker 2: Fair about Trinidad Chambliss, he represented him. In that case,
- 30:23Speaker 2: Tom was one of the people who was most vociferous
- 30:26Speaker 2: in his opposition to this decision.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:28Speaker 1: And there are a couple of reasons that I think
- 30:30Speaker 1: he was vociferous in this.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Number one is the fear that this sort of decision
- 30:36Speaker 2: that makes people feel like the sky is falling.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Because that's the thing people are like, oh my God, well,
- 30:40Speaker 1: if the NCAA can't do this, what is it good for?
- 30:43Speaker 2: What I've been asking you for the last 25 years
- 30:46Speaker 2: is exactly that question. Yes, the whiz is Richard Pryor, motherfucker.
- 30:50Speaker 2: We've been talking about this forever. Now you see it.
- 30:53Speaker 3: Got it.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 30:55Speaker 2: Anyway, but Maher's concern is that this is drastic enough
- 30:58Speaker 2: and shocking enough that it might make Congress get involved
- 31:01Speaker 2: and pass this new bill. Because you'll notice the coordinated
- 31:05Speaker 2: responses from people in college sports all were, this is ridiculous,
- 31:08Speaker 2: and this is why we need Congress. They all said
- 31:11Speaker 2: the same thing. Don't you think for a second that
- 31:14Speaker 2: the NCAA itself hates this decision? Because all they've done
- 31:18Speaker 2: is look for somebody else to solve their problems for them.
- 31:21Speaker 2: And they feel like now maybe this is enough to
- 31:23Speaker 2: get the fire department to show up.
- 31:26Speaker 6: Right?
- 31:27Speaker 1: Maybe now, you know what it is before?
- 31:29Speaker 2: They was just treating it like somebody car got stole, right?
- 31:31Speaker 2: They don't investigate that.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Now they're like, somebody broke in my house.
- 31:36Speaker 3: Oh shit, man.
- 31:37Speaker 2: I guess we got to look into that. Come dust
- 31:38Speaker 2: for fingerprints or whatever it is. But that's one thing.
- 31:41Speaker 2: Number two though, is that Mars has this really inventive
- 31:45Speaker 2: defense and he used this or theory rather, and he
- 31:47Speaker 2: used this in the Chambliss case and it was effectively
- 31:50Speaker 2: used also in this case. There are some state federal
- 31:52Speaker 2: stuff that I think is a little too complex for
- 31:54Speaker 2: me to get into right now. But this part I
- 31:56Speaker 2: think is important. And when I talked to Mars about this,
- 31:58Speaker 2: I could hear his smile as he explained how this works.
- 32:02Speaker 2: And the long of the short is the NCAA's mission
- 32:04Speaker 2: statement implies, or not implies, it clearly states that it
- 32:07Speaker 2: exists for the improvement of the well-being of student athletes. Well,
- 32:12Speaker 2: I don't even like that term, but you know, that's
- 32:14Speaker 2: the one they came up with. That's the one they use.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Yeah, they're there to serve the athletes. That's what it's for, okay?
- 32:20Speaker 2: Therefore, every decision they make needs to be made with
- 32:24Speaker 2: that athlete in mind. And at every point, they need
- 32:27Speaker 2: to be able to show how their decision helps the athlete.
- 32:33Speaker 1: In this case, the idea that you're.
- 32:35Speaker 2: Removing Sorsby from the community and environment that helps him
- 32:39Speaker 2: with his treatment, that is not an athlete-first decision.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Therefore, the NCAA cannot justify that decision.
- 32:48Speaker 2: Right? It's an extension of what Mars is talking about.
- 32:51Speaker 2: I bring that up to say, Mars is like, hey, man,
- 32:55Speaker 2: y'all messing up my good.
- 32:56Speaker 1: Thing, dog. That ain't going to blame this.
- 32:59Speaker 6: Shit on me.
- 33:01Speaker 1: That's how it felt. Right?
- 33:04Speaker 2: There was a tinge of that in the Mars response.
- 33:09Speaker 2: That was the part that I did pick up on,
- 33:12Speaker 2: was just kind of feeling like, ooh, I didn't mean
- 33:17Speaker 2: it that way. Now, of course, this is also an issue.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Because this approach can be used in a lot of
- 33:25Speaker 2: cases for a lot of people.
- 33:27Speaker 1: Like this is this is this is tough for the NCAA.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Which pretty consistently gets his ass handed to it in court.
- 33:32Speaker 2: I want to push back on one last thing. And
- 33:34Speaker 2: that is the idea that this was judicial home cooking.
- 33:38Speaker 2: Number one, the judge, there was a judge who was
- 33:41Speaker 2: a Texas Tech grad who was originally on this case
- 33:43Speaker 2: and he recused himself.
- 33:45Speaker 1: For that very reason. And they went and got another guy.
- 33:47Speaker 1: He's retired.
- 33:48Speaker 2: He worked in Tarrant County, which is in Fort Worth.
- 33:50Speaker 2: Like he not he'll go to this school. And he's
- 33:53Speaker 2: the one who came to this conclusion. The argument that
- 33:56Speaker 2: just about everybody makes is what happens is all these
- 33:59Speaker 2: guys come in and they go get a judge to
- 34:01Speaker 2: give them some home cooking. Now, when I started that
- 34:03Speaker 2: Vanity Fair piece, I started with that premise because I
- 34:06Speaker 2: was saying a thing that would really doom the NCAA
- 34:09Speaker 2: is what these people are doing is they're going to
- 34:10Speaker 2: put these putting their paperwork in in these courthouses that
- 34:13Speaker 2: in the same place as the schools. And so they
- 34:15Speaker 2: are probably getting a kinder audience when they do that.
- 34:19Speaker 1: So I asked Mars about that.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And Mars was like, nah, here's the thing.
- 34:25Speaker 1: The NCAA, he went through a long thing about it.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I can't remember. I have it written down. I have
- 34:30Speaker 1: notes here about it.
- 34:30Speaker 2: But the longer the short was, in the end, you
- 34:35Speaker 2: can only really file these lawsuits in two places. In
- 34:41Speaker 2: the local market or environment. Or in Indiana, where the
- 34:46Speaker 2: NCAA is headquartered. So I can only do it home
- 34:52Speaker 2: or do it there. Why would I do it there, right?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Where the NCAA is the one that's more likely to
- 34:57Speaker 2: get the home cooking, right? This is how it works.
- 35:00Speaker 2: You either got to file it where you are or there.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Number two, a point he made I thought was important,
- 35:05Speaker 2: which is people, these schools lose cases at home all
- 35:09Speaker 2: the time. Outside of college sports, what this is is
- 35:13Speaker 2: operating under the assumption that judges are incapable of being
- 35:17Speaker 2: impartial and that everybody cares so much about football or
- 35:21Speaker 2: basketball or whatever it is that the judge is just
- 35:23Speaker 2: going to be in line with what happens there. Mars
- 35:26Speaker 2: ran through a list of cases. This one, that guy lost.
- 35:29Speaker 2: This one, that guy lost. This one, I didn't take
- 35:31Speaker 2: that case because I knew he was going to lose.
- 35:33Speaker 2: So forth and so on. You see what I'm saying?
- 35:36Speaker 2: We went straight to this place of cynicism. that I
- 35:40Speaker 2: just don't feel like anybody stopped and realized that there
- 35:43Speaker 2: are fundamental questions to be asked, partially about the NCAA,
- 35:47Speaker 2: partially about how should we treat people at this age
- 35:51Speaker 2: of their lives, right?
- 35:52Speaker 1: Should we create a world where it gets all over for.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Them based on bad decisions that are very easy to
- 35:59Speaker 2: make and that people are halfway kind of nudged toward
- 36:02Speaker 2: based on the new world order?
- 36:03Speaker 1: That's all of those things.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Instead, My colleagues roundly just decided to flip out and
- 36:10Speaker 2: say the sky is falling when everybody had the option
- 36:14Speaker 2: of stopping, calming down, breathing, and asking some second-level questions.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Because the real story here to me is in the
- 36:23Speaker 2: second-level questions. And some of those second-level questions, by the way,
- 36:28Speaker 2: are going to help answer when this is going to
- 36:29Speaker 2: get real fun. which is next April when NFL teams
- 36:33Speaker 2: have to decide if you can pass up on a
- 36:35Speaker 2: potential starting quarterback.
- 36:38Speaker 1: Because he used to gamble. There are arguments on both sides.
- 36:44Speaker 2: We're going to find out what the new world order
- 36:46Speaker 2: is for real when we decide how much forgiveness they
- 36:49Speaker 2: give him.
- 36:51Speaker 1: And now... New York, the wait is over. The Knicks

- 39:00Speaker 3: All right, Bo, we got a couple of voicemails we
- 39:03Speaker 3: wanted to get to, couldn't get to on Monday. Here's
- 39:06Speaker 3: our first.
- 39:07Speaker 6: Hey, Bomani. It's Donnie from DuPage County. Been a fan
- 39:12Speaker 6: since Game Theory on HBO. So I thought I had
- 39:17Speaker 6: a pretty good question for you. And it's, what is
- 39:21Speaker 6: the largest crowd pop you've ever been a part of?
- 39:25Speaker 6: Mine was when my dad took me to a Bears
- 39:28Speaker 6: game at Soldier Field. And we had Devin Hester. And
- 39:33Speaker 6: it was Adrian Peterson's rookie year. And he ran all
- 39:36Speaker 6: over us. But Devin Hester broke free for a punt,
- 39:42Speaker 6: returned for a touchdown. And hearing the crowd go crazy
- 39:46Speaker 6: for that was... the largest. So that's my question for you. Thanks,
- 39:50Speaker 6: you and Ryan, for everything you do. Bye-bye.
- 39:57Speaker 2: I feel like people who have known me and heard
- 40:00Speaker 2: me for a while are probably a little tired of
- 40:02Speaker 2: hearing me say this one, but Ray Allen hit that shot, dog.
- 40:06Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Ray Allen hit that shot. That was, oh, and it
- 40:15Speaker 2: was chaos. I told you, my whole thing was chaos.
- 40:17Speaker 2: I had gone from the top to get to the floor,
- 40:19Speaker 2: and then I couldn't go in the tunnel, and I
- 40:20Speaker 2: had to kneel down on the baseline and everything else,
- 40:22Speaker 2: and it was like, oh, except, oh, no, there might
- 40:24Speaker 2: have been one thing with a louder pop than that one,
- 40:27Speaker 2: and that's any time that boy Birdman would block a shot.
- 40:32Speaker 1: White people love Birdman, dog.
- 40:35Speaker 3: Speaking of.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Hey, Bull, how you doing tonight? Hey, this is Leonard
- 40:41Speaker 4: of Nashville. And I was calling. But first of all,
- 40:45Speaker 4: I appreciate your show. The reason I was calling was
- 40:48Speaker 4: because that's your twice as good list. I think, man,
- 40:53Speaker 4: you got to make sure we ask Scott Skiles and
- 40:55Speaker 4: then this. The dude had to work extra hard, man,
- 40:58Speaker 4: especially down in Orlando, man, to get those. That's all
- 41:01Speaker 4: the assist that he got down there. And he was
- 41:05Speaker 4: on a bad team, too, at that time. So I
- 41:08Speaker 4: think he needs to be the poster child for the
- 41:13Speaker 4: twice as good list. But anyway, as I say, Bo,
- 41:19Speaker 4: appreciate the show.
- 41:20Speaker 5: Enjoy what you do.
- 41:23Speaker 4: And keep doing your thing. And remember Raph Wiley.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Peace. Hey, man, we always here for a Ralph Wiley shout.
- 41:32Speaker 2: I appreciate you on that. I hate it when that happens.
- 41:38Speaker 2: What did he just say?
- 41:39Speaker 3: Oh, he's talking about Scott Skiles.
- 41:41Speaker 1: Let me tell you this.
- 41:42Speaker 2: First of all, I'm careful what I say about Scott Skiles.
- 41:44Speaker 2: I said something once about Scott Skiles on the radio,
- 41:46Speaker 2: and I got a phone call from Scott Skiles.
- 41:48Speaker 3: On the air?
- 41:49Speaker 1: And it was no on my phone.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Oh, wow.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Well, I understand where he was coming from.
- 41:56Speaker 6: All right.
- 41:56Speaker 2: You remember that Sports Illustrated? Well, you probably don't remember
- 41:59Speaker 2: it in real time. You probably read about the Sports
- 42:00Speaker 2: Illustrated article about all.
- 42:02Speaker 1: The deadbeat dads in the NBA.
- 42:03Speaker 2: I had to picture had to picture the little boy
- 42:05Speaker 2: with the basketball on the cover.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Like, where's my dad or something like that? And Scott Skiles.
- 42:12Speaker 2: Was prominently mentioned in that article, but apparently none of
- 42:17Speaker 2: it was true. But I didn't know that because of
- 42:20Speaker 2: Sports Illustrated.
- 42:21Speaker 6: Of course.
- 42:22Speaker 2: And so somebody told Scott Skiles about her.
- 42:24Speaker 1: Scott Skiles got a Google alert, man. Scott Skiles called
- 42:26Speaker 1: me hot.
- 42:28Speaker 2: And I'm like, hey, man, I apologize to you, but
- 42:31Speaker 2: the same reason I got. You know what I'm saying?
- 42:35Speaker 2: It took a lot to talk Scott Skiles through that.
- 42:39Speaker 1: It really did.
- 42:39Speaker 2: I say all that to say that was why I
- 42:42Speaker 2: didn't put Scott Skiles on the list. Tell you this
- 42:44Speaker 2: about Scott Skiles, though, boy, he the one you don't
- 42:46Speaker 2: want no problems with.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Like, I think who it was.
- 42:50Speaker 2: What's my man's name? Used to cover Kentucky basketball. Then
- 42:54Speaker 2: he covered the Thunders. First name is Brett. I can't
- 42:55Speaker 2: remember his last name. But he talked about Scott Skiles
- 42:57Speaker 2: getting into a fight in a high school all-star game
- 42:59Speaker 2: in Indiana.
- 43:00Speaker 1: Like, when he was 17. That's awesome.
- 43:04Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:05Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 43:05Speaker 1: Scott Skiles.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Scott Skiles, he's definitely working twice as hard. And I
- 43:09Speaker 2: just don't want him, like, bringing that shit over here again.
- 43:12Speaker 3: The twice as hard might be its own episode.
- 43:15Speaker 1: Trust me, don't you worry. It'll... I spy a recurring bit.
- 43:20Speaker 3: And speaking of, let's end on this.
- 43:23Speaker 5: Hey, Bomani. It was the summer of 2003. Your boy, Aaron,
- 43:31Speaker 5: here in Kansas City at the time, was a sophomore
- 43:35Speaker 5: in high school. And my mom signed me up for
- 43:40Speaker 5: this summer program at the University.
- 43:42Speaker 6: Of of Missouri Rolla, one of those nerdy.
- 43:45Speaker 5: Engineering schools, and I was doing an engineering program, some
- 43:49Speaker 5: kind of summer transportation institute thing. Anyway, to prepare you
- 43:54Speaker 5: to go in the fields of engineering, met this white
- 43:58Speaker 5: girl named Keisha. Changed my life, issue your boy into puberty.
- 44:06Speaker 5: I know I was only about, what, like 16 or so?
- 44:13Speaker 5: Changed my life forever. She was a white girl from Arkansas,
- 44:16Speaker 5: of all places.
- 44:17Speaker 3: All Kansas.
- 44:19Speaker 5: And, yeah, your boy was looking like Jesus Shuttlesworth, a.k.a.
- 44:24Speaker 5: Ray Allen in that scene. You know the one. Some
- 44:27Speaker 5: of y'all may know.
- 44:28Speaker 3: If you know, you know.
- 44:30Speaker 5: Smiling ear to ear.
- 44:32Speaker 3: And it was just her. It wasn't even two. It
- 44:34Speaker 3: was just her.
- 44:35Speaker 4: White Keisha.
- 44:37Speaker 3: And, yeah.
- 44:38Speaker 5: Oh, one more thing before I go.
- 44:41Speaker 3: We need to get past her.
- 44:43Speaker 5: Tony thompson to pray over the spurs instead of these.
- 44:47Speaker 6: Nuns because these nuns.
- 44:49Speaker 5: Ain't working or they can get whoopie goldberg and uh
- 44:54Speaker 5: sister act to pray over them anyway we'll see what
- 44:58Speaker 5: happens appreciate the show i'll let you later.
- 45:03Speaker 2: I'm not gonna lie right taking a lot out of
- 45:06Speaker 2: the fact that not only does this man refer to
- 45:08Speaker 2: himself in the third person to people who have no
- 45:10Speaker 2: idea who he is, he.
- 45:12Speaker 1: Does it with a dramatic spelling.
- 45:15Speaker 6: Yes.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Which I take to say he's been telling this story
- 45:20Speaker 2: about white Keisha forever and ever.
- 45:24Speaker 3: It's clearly a seminal moment.
- 45:26Speaker 5: It is.
- 45:30Speaker 2: But I want to know what everybody involved in this
- 45:32Speaker 2: conversation looked like. That's what I'm curious about.
- 45:42Speaker 1: And so are the rest of you.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Because there's assumptions that a lot of black people make
- 45:47Speaker 2: about relationships of this dynamic in this sort of place.
- 45:52Speaker 2: And then I had the day where I realized white
- 45:54Speaker 2: people assume the exact same thing. Everybody want to know
- 45:59Speaker 2: what white Keisha look like. And very few people are
- 46:04Speaker 2: affording you the benefit of the doubt in this moment.
- 46:09Speaker 1: But hey, ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining
- 46:13Speaker 1: us here on The Right Time.
- 46:14Speaker 2: We do this four days a week. Ryan Brumley, Handle
- 46:16Speaker 2: Things Behind the Scene. Thank you, sir. Hit the voicemail line, 323-596-7767. Remember,
- 46:22Speaker 2: follow The Right Time. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us,
- 46:25Speaker 2: give us five stars. You only give us four stars.
- 46:27Speaker 2: I'm inclined to believe you are a hater.
- 46:29Speaker 1: We'll talk to you guys in a couple of days.
- 46:31Speaker 1: Take it easy.
