Speed kills — and Ontario’s cops are hitting the road hard. Last year, excessive speed played a role in 75 of 65 fatal crashes investigated by the OPP. During this year’s May-to-June crackdown, police handed out over 2,500 speeding and stunt driving tickets, took 173 vehicles off the road, and issued nearly 2,500 Highway Traffic Act charges plus 118 Criminal Code charges. Officers witnessed speeds up to 300 km/h, and over the past decade, speed-related collisions have killed 786 people and injured 1,600+ annually.
