- 2:40Speaker 1: I think maybe two, and then Mama got ahold of it,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and I am so glad she did. But she's rubbing
- 2:46Speaker 1: off on me. Just I'm saying that now, and it's okay,
- 2:51Speaker 1: But we are on part eight of the Butcher Baker
- 2:55Speaker 1: of Alaska series, where we are diving deep into infamous
- 2:59Speaker 1: serial killer Robert Hansen, his endless number of victims who
- 3:05Speaker 1: we refuse to be forgotten, and how all of it
- 3:09Speaker 1: could have been stopped numerous times. Numerous they would have
- 3:14Speaker 1: just listened to the women. Okay, the state of Alaska
- 3:18Speaker 1: has a lot of blood on their hands, and we're
- 3:22Speaker 1: here to shine a light on all of it. Warning
- 3:26Speaker 1: there will be lots of rants and cursey words. I
- 3:31Speaker 1: can say. There's also going to be a lot in
- 3:34Speaker 1: the chat because that's where Lama is, so she's going
- 3:39Speaker 1: to be over there. Given us her rant. Now tonight
- 3:44Speaker 1: I am having. It's a watermelon Jolly Rancher mix with
- 3:50Speaker 1: sparkling water in titos and Guys, I will tell you
- 3:57Speaker 1: this drink is deadly. A lot of times I will
- 4:00Speaker 1: drink it just the sparkling water with the watermelon Jolly rancher.
- 4:05Speaker 1: But I remember that I needed vodka because we're in
- 4:08Speaker 1: Alaska again. Okay, we're still in Alaska, So everybody, grab
- 4:16Speaker 1: whatever you're drinking, grab a cozy blanket. I've got mine
- 4:21Speaker 1: right here, and let's get into Tonight's case, because guys,
- 4:25Speaker 1: I'm not going to lie to you and tell you
- 4:27Speaker 1: that it's gotten any better. Okay, I'm not going to
- 4:30Speaker 1: lie to you and tell you that, because guys, it hasn't.
- 4:33Speaker 1: It hasn't, and look sick. Lama makes no promises. Uh
- 4:38Speaker 1: oh okay, guys, I've put y'all on notice, and she's
- 4:44Speaker 1: under her mod account, so we can't even kick her out.
- 4:47Speaker 1: Oh lord, how did we let that happen? Okay? We
- 4:53Speaker 1: have spent the last seven parts peeling back the veneer
- 4:57Speaker 1: of the meat Baker. We traced Robert Hansen's evolution from
- 5:02Speaker 1: a roadside scavenger who proud the Anchorage Strip in a
- 5:06Speaker 1: metallic green Pontiac and a red Volvo and a truck
- 5:10Speaker 1: with a camper in the back, to now an aviator
- 5:14Speaker 1: who would go on to use the vast, unmonitored Alaskan
- 5:18Speaker 1: Bush as his personal disposal site. God, I hate this man.
- 5:25Speaker 1: We saw the tragedy of his early victims not getting
- 5:29Speaker 1: an inkling of justice that they rightly deserved. You know what, guys,
- 5:36Speaker 1: I just remembered I'm supposed to be doing these videos. Okay,
- 5:41Speaker 1: don't remember which one I'm supposed to be on Okay,
- 5:44Speaker 1: I'm good, guys. How about that. I'm a little bit behind,
- 5:47Speaker 1: but I'm good now. The unsolved murder of why is
- 5:54Speaker 1: it not working? Okay, guys, it's not Hold on, guys,
- 6:01Speaker 1: I'm trying to click. There we go. My mouse was
- 6:05Speaker 1: doing this mouse thing where it didn't want to work.
- 6:08Speaker 1: But the unsolved murders of Beth Van Santen, Shirley Jonas,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and zz Mason and the disappearance of Macon Emerick and
- 6:20Speaker 1: Mary Phil Okay, my mouse does not like me tonight.
- 6:25Speaker 1: All who have families that still have no answers? Over
- 6:29Speaker 1: fifty years later, so we saw that the Jane Jane
- 6:37Speaker 1: Doe Dancer was silenced okay, sorry, by her own trauma
- 6:44Speaker 1: and bias of society in the infuriating near miss escape
- 6:49Speaker 1: of Christy Hayes. Sorry, guys, I'm just rearranging my screen
- 6:55Speaker 1: here a little bit, since my mouse is being funky. Okay. Now,
- 7:01Speaker 1: little did Anchorage know that the meek Baker was gone,
- 7:05Speaker 1: and in his place is a man with wings, a
- 7:10Speaker 1: man with a map, and a man who, thanks to
- 7:13Speaker 1: the last ten years of systematic failures by the State
- 7:17Speaker 1: of Alaska, believes he is untouchable and guys, He's not
- 7:23Speaker 1: wrong to some degree. Okay, Alaska, they did that to him.
- 7:29Speaker 1: For the next few years, the silence of the Alaskan
- 7:32Speaker 1: wilderness will be punctuated by the roar of a piper
- 7:38Speaker 1: super cup engine. Guys, that just freaks me out. Okay,
- 7:44Speaker 1: Robert Hansen has moved from being a scavenger of the
- 7:47Speaker 1: streets to an architect of disappearances. He's no longer looking
- 7:53Speaker 1: for dates. He's looking for cargo. Before we get into
- 7:59Speaker 1: the stories of these women, I reserved several episodes. I
- 8:05Speaker 1: should say we reserved several episodes to be able to
- 8:08Speaker 1: tell their individual stories in showcase who they were as
- 8:13Speaker 1: people and they were more than just dancers or sex
- 8:16Speaker 1: workers or victims of Robert Hansen, because they were and
- 8:21Speaker 1: they are uh oh Savage is in the chat. Yes,
- 8:28Speaker 1: I am flying solo and I am unsupervised and doublehs
- 8:33Speaker 1: at homes, so you should be especially scared. Okay. Now,
- 8:40Speaker 1: Loma didn't think it was going to be hard and
- 8:42Speaker 1: difficult to find information about seventeen plus victims of an
- 8:46Speaker 1: infamous serial killer from forty five years ago. And she
- 8:50Speaker 1: said she doesn't know if it was because of the
- 8:52Speaker 1: time period or it was because many of them had
- 8:56Speaker 1: numerous aliases, or that simply nobody care. Loma, I'm here
- 9:02Speaker 1: to tell you I agree with you. It's a combination
- 9:05Speaker 1: of things and it just breaks my heart for them.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Society didn't see them as people while they were alive.
- 9:14Speaker 1: Robert Hansen didn't know how much didn't about any of them,
- 9:18Speaker 1: not even their names. Even after many were identified and found.
- 9:24Speaker 1: The only evidence they ever walked this earth was merely
- 9:29Speaker 1: a sentence or two. That's horrific. So while we may
- 9:35Speaker 1: not have much information to share about some individuals, that
- 9:39Speaker 1: doesn't mean that we've forgotten them. Okay. They say you
- 9:43Speaker 1: live as long as the last person who remembers you,
- 9:47Speaker 1: so please, I'm begging you keep their names alive, both
- 9:51Speaker 1: in your mind and on your tongue because they deserve that. Okay,
- 9:58Speaker 1: they deserve that. And Lama, yes, this case has been
- 10:05Speaker 1: heartbreaking and you have done an amazing job with it,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and I'm so happy that you forced me to do
- 10:15Speaker 1: so many episodes. So there's a video, no sound, Okay,
- 10:23Speaker 1: I have never done a video before, guys, So we're
- 10:27Speaker 1: going to see how Terry does. So this could go
- 10:30Speaker 1: off the rails, but let's see how this goes. My
- 10:36Speaker 1: mouse is being a little witch tonight. Okay, I did it? Okay.
- 10:43Speaker 1: The year nineteen eighty began under a dark, literal cloud.
- 10:47Speaker 1: On May eighteenth, Mount Saint Helen's erupted in Washington, sending
- 10:52Speaker 1: a plume of ash into the atmosphere that blanketed the
- 10:56Speaker 1: Pacific Northwest. It was a day the world changed, changed,
- 11:01Speaker 1: a day of sudden catasalismic shifts. I can't say that word,
- 11:07Speaker 1: but guys, for the people of Alaska, the news of
- 11:12Speaker 1: the eruption dominated the airways, the newspapers, and the conversation
- 11:18Speaker 1: in every coffee shop. But in the quiet port town
- 11:23Speaker 1: of Seaward. Okay, guys, my mouse may not let me
- 11:28Speaker 1: keep doing this. We'll see Seaward. While the world was
- 11:31Speaker 1: distracted by the falling ash, another tragedy was unfolding, one
- 11:36Speaker 1: that wouldn't make headlines for years Alaska. On May nineteenth,
- 11:43Speaker 1: nineteen eighty, just one day after the earth fractured in Washington,
- 11:49Speaker 1: a young woman named Joanna Messina, who was thought to
- 11:53Speaker 1: be twenty three or twenty four years old, was reported missing.
- 12:00Speaker 1: Joanna Messina was also known as Joanna Demy or Joanna McCoy.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So many names. Now she was a drifter seeking something
- 12:17Speaker 1: she hadn't found in New York. She was a trained
- 12:19Speaker 1: nurse who had walked away from her past. She had
- 12:23Speaker 1: hitched her way to Alaska with only her most loyal companion,
- 12:28Speaker 1: an over protective German shepherd, and seward. Her life was
- 12:33Speaker 1: a series of tenuous anchors. She found work in a
- 12:38Speaker 1: cannery and settled into a boarding house owned by an
- 12:41Speaker 1: inexperienced landlord who seemed to care more about the tax
- 12:45Speaker 1: ride off than the people living in his rooms. Sounds
- 12:50Speaker 1: like a landlord. Tennants described her as isolated, preferring the
- 12:55Speaker 1: company of her dog to the people around her. Guys,
- 13:00Speaker 1: because dogs are better than people. Okay, it was a
- 13:04Speaker 1: dog that became her defining feature, an animal so intensely
- 13:09Speaker 1: protective that those who knew them often whispered the same question,
- 13:15Speaker 1: how could anyone get close enough to hurt her? Now?
- 13:22Speaker 1: Her life ensured was defined by a steady retreat from stability.
- 13:29Speaker 1: After being evicted from the boarding house, she stayed briefly
- 13:33Speaker 1: with the friend, a situation that ended just as abruptly
- 13:37Speaker 1: as it began. By the time she moved to a
- 13:41Speaker 1: temporary campground, she was truly alone except for her dog. Guys,
- 13:48Speaker 1: I'm upset that we do not have pictures of the dog,
- 13:53Speaker 1: okay now. When her friends returned to that campsite to
- 13:56Speaker 1: check on her a few days later, they found only
- 14:00Speaker 1: silence in the woods. There was no sign of Joanna,
- 14:05Speaker 1: no sign of her dog, and no sign of a struggle.
- 14:11Speaker 1: Joanna Messina had vanished. On May nineteenth, nineteen eighty. She
- 14:17Speaker 1: was officially reported missing. The name confusion Messina de Maya
- 14:24Speaker 1: McCoy was the first of many hurdles that would plague
- 14:27Speaker 1: this investigation. To the police, she was a drifter, a
- 14:33Speaker 1: woman with no permanent address, and a complicated identity. In
- 14:38Speaker 1: the rush of everyday police work, these are the cases
- 14:41Speaker 1: that often slip through the cracks. What they didn't know
- 14:47Speaker 1: then but we know now, is that the eruption of
- 14:51Speaker 1: Mount Saint Helen's wasn't the only tremor in the Northwest
- 14:56Speaker 1: that week. While the nation looked at the volcanic ash,
- 15:00Speaker 1: a predator was looking at a map, and a woman
- 15:04Speaker 1: who had come thousands of miles to find herself had
- 15:07Speaker 1: instead walked into the past of a ghost. Oh, and
- 15:17Speaker 1: lady in Gray who's modding over on the vertical is
- 15:21Speaker 1: anxious to see what has been what Lama has found
- 15:26Speaker 1: on these women. Oh she did good, leg I will
- 15:31Speaker 1: tell you she did good. I've already been through it all.
- 15:33Speaker 1: So while the authorities were still scratching their heads over
- 15:38Speaker 1: Joanna Messina's disappearance and Seaward, a new, more aggressive pattern
- 15:43Speaker 1: was emerging in the heart of Anchorage. On June twenty eighth,
- 15:49Speaker 1: just a month after Joanna vanished, Roxanne Eastland, a twenty
- 15:55Speaker 1: four year old woman known to the city's nightlife, left
- 15:59Speaker 1: her room at the Budget Motel on Spinnered Road for
- 16:02Speaker 1: a date. She never returned. Roxanne was a woman who
- 16:08Speaker 1: navigated the blurred lines of the Anchorage underground. She was
- 16:13Speaker 1: known by a dozen aliases, Karen Bunsgard, Cassandra Goodwin. Why
- 16:24Speaker 1: I don't know why it's not showing you all of
- 16:26Speaker 1: their names, But I tried. But she moved through the
- 16:30Speaker 1: world with the kind of fluidity that made her invisible
- 16:33Speaker 1: to the people who were supposed to protect her. To
- 16:37Speaker 1: the police, she was Avenue Girl, a label that carried
- 16:41Speaker 1: a heavily dismissive weight. In nineteen eighty she was five
- 16:46Speaker 1: foot four slight of build, often wearing wireframed glasses in
- 16:50Speaker 1: a distinctive brown leather coat with a dark fur collar.
- 16:55Speaker 1: She was someone who frequented the downtown clubs, a fixture
- 16:59Speaker 1: of the Fourth Avenue scene, but on that late June afternoon,
- 17:04Speaker 1: she was a target. Lady and Gray, I want to
- 17:11Speaker 1: know myself, Lady and Gray says, I don't understand how
- 17:14Speaker 1: Hansen controlled that dog. German Shepherds are notoriously protective and
- 17:20Speaker 1: loyal to their person one thousand percent. I had a
- 17:24Speaker 1: German Shepherd growing up. I have a German Shepherd Border
- 17:28Speaker 1: calling mix, and let me tell you, bear would take
- 17:33Speaker 1: you out, which leads me to think something bad was
- 17:37Speaker 1: done to that dog. And I'm not going to think
- 17:39Speaker 1: about it, okay. Her disappearance followed the same chilling script
- 17:44Speaker 1: that would soon become all too familiar to Alaskan investigators.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Roxanne left her boyfriend at the Budget motel to meet
- 17:53Speaker 1: an unknown male on Fourth Avenue. It was the classic lore.
- 18:00Speaker 1: When she didn't appear after a few days, her friends
- 18:03Speaker 1: became desperate. Now, guys, why did the friends have to
- 18:07Speaker 1: report her missing? Why did the boyfriend and I'm saying
- 18:12Speaker 1: boyfriend because if you're a pent boyfriend, whatever, Why weren't
- 18:17Speaker 1: you trying to find her? Why? Why? Okay? By July second,
- 18:25Speaker 1: the reports were filed, but again the administration chaos worked
- 18:31Speaker 1: in the predator's favor. With her multiple aliases, Karen Lee
- 18:37Speaker 1: Bondsgarded became the most prominent. The paperwork was fragmented in
- 18:42Speaker 1: an error before centralized digital databases, Tracking a woman who
- 18:47Speaker 1: lived under several names was like trying to catch wind
- 18:53Speaker 1: catch smoke in a windstorm, which is impossible. I think
- 18:59Speaker 1: the police treated her disappearance as a lifestyle issue. There
- 19:03Speaker 1: was no city wide alert, no suspicion that a serial
- 19:08Speaker 1: killer was operating a flight service out of the Anchorage Airstrips.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Roxanne Eastland never turned up. The brown leather coat, the
- 19:18Speaker 1: high heeled boots, and the life she was trying to
- 19:21Speaker 1: build in a budget motel simply evaporated into the Alaskan summer.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Roxanne Eastlam was not just a missing person. She was
- 19:33Speaker 1: the second chapter in a story of systematic failure. By
- 19:38Speaker 1: the time her friend reported her missing, Robert Hansen had
- 19:42Speaker 1: already turned his focus back to the bars, back to
- 19:47Speaker 1: the clubs, and back to the hunt. He had learned
- 19:51Speaker 1: that the police would do little more than follow a
- 19:54Speaker 1: report under an alias and wait for her to turn up.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So Lama says she is now in a serious monogamous
- 20:05Speaker 1: relationship with newspaper dot com. Lama, I'm sorry to tell
- 20:09Speaker 1: you newspaper dot com is also in a relationship with me,
- 20:16Speaker 1: so it's not monogamous. Sorry if you thought it was
- 20:21Speaker 1: just kidding. On July eighth, nineteen eighty, the silence of
- 20:25Speaker 1: a gravel pit near Seward was broken by a discovery
- 20:29Speaker 1: that would haunt the Kanaya Peninsula for years to come.
- 20:34Speaker 1: A camper, perhaps looking for a quiet spot away from
- 20:38Speaker 1: the highway, stumbled upon a scene of primal horror. A
- 20:47Speaker 1: large black bear had unearthed a shallow grave, and the
- 20:52Speaker 1: body of a young woman had become a food source
- 20:56Speaker 1: for the scavenger. The case was handled to investigator John Lucking.
- 21:03Speaker 1: What a name, mister Lucking? A man who looked like
- 21:07Speaker 1: he belonged on a football field, but possessed the sharp
- 21:11Speaker 1: instincts of a veteran investigator. However, before Lucking could even
- 21:17Speaker 1: begin to process the crime scene, he found himself in
- 21:21Speaker 1: a bizarre stand off with Alaskan bureaucracy. Why am I
- 21:27Speaker 1: not surprised? What about you guys? As Lucky arrived at
- 21:30Speaker 1: the scene. The black bear returned to its fine. In Alaska,
- 21:36Speaker 1: black bears were a protected species. I don't know why,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but they are. I don't think they are anymore, but
- 21:43Speaker 1: they used to be. The fish and wildlife police arrived
- 21:47Speaker 1: with a focus that infuriated Lucking. They were just as
- 21:52Speaker 1: concerned with the safety of the bear as they were
- 21:56Speaker 1: with the murder of the woman. Really people. When the
- 22:00Speaker 1: bear refused to be scared away, Lucking's team had no
- 22:04Speaker 1: choice but destroy it. The resulting administrative heat, the paperwork,
- 22:11Speaker 1: and the scrutiny over a protected animal while a human
- 22:16Speaker 1: lay discarded in the dirt led the troopers to give
- 22:19Speaker 1: Joanna a nickname that reflected both the tragedy of her
- 22:23Speaker 1: remains and the absurdity of the investigation. The bear Lady,
- 22:29Speaker 1: What that's just awful? Identifying the victim was a forensic nightmare.
- 22:39Speaker 1: Wildlife had destroyed much of the physical evidence, and the
- 22:43Speaker 1: search for her identity was hampered by the same aliases
- 22:46Speaker 1: that had obscured her life. Initially known to local police
- 22:52Speaker 1: as Joanna McCoy from New York, investigators hit a dead
- 22:56Speaker 1: ind until they uncovered the name Anna Messini. It was
- 23:04Speaker 1: through this name that they finally connected with her family
- 23:07Speaker 1: back east and secured the dental records needed for a
- 23:11Speaker 1: positive ID. She wasn't just a bear lady or a McCoy.
- 23:17Speaker 1: She was a daughter, a trained nurse, and a woman
- 23:21Speaker 1: who had whose journey west ended in a shallow pit.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Lucking turned his sights on the new on the Seward
- 23:33Speaker 1: residence because Joanna had alienated many people at her boarding house.
- 23:39Speaker 1: The list of suspects was long, but one name rose
- 23:44Speaker 1: at the top, the veterinarian who had served as her landlord.
- 23:51Speaker 1: So Lady and Grace as the bear police are sirius
- 23:54Speaker 1: in Alaska. Wow, I thought you could kill bears there. Now,
- 24:01Speaker 1: maybe that's over in Canada. Okay. Maybe. A source, the
- 24:07Speaker 1: friend who had reported Joanna missing, convinced Lucking that the
- 24:11Speaker 1: Vet in Joanna were having an affair. She painted a
- 24:15Speaker 1: picture of a pat to stay scheme where rent was
- 24:20Speaker 1: traded for sex. When the VET denied it, Lucking saw
- 24:25Speaker 1: a liar, and when the vet failed a polygraph, the
- 24:29Speaker 1: readings off the charts. When asked about Joanna, Lucking believed
- 24:35Speaker 1: he had his killer. Thank you Lomma for correcting me.
- 24:42Speaker 1: The pay to sky instead of pat to stay. I
- 24:45Speaker 1: kind of like the pat to stay. You got to
- 24:46Speaker 1: pat a little here, Okay, got it? Uh? Luckying hypothesized.
- 24:55Speaker 1: The Vet had grown tired of the arrangement. Fearing Joanne
- 25:00Speaker 1: would expose the affair to his wife and ruin his career.
- 25:05Speaker 1: The Vet used his knowledge of animals to neutralize her
- 25:09Speaker 1: protective German shepherd and took her to the gravel pit
- 25:12Speaker 1: to silence her. The Vet essentially broke confessing to the
- 25:18Speaker 1: affair that adamantly denying the murder. I mean, it'd be
- 25:25Speaker 1: a lot easier to just divorce my wife if she
- 25:29Speaker 1: found out than to kill Joanna, he argued. He was
- 25:33Speaker 1: eventually cleared, and guys, a veterinarian having an affair might
- 25:41Speaker 1: ruin your marriage life. I don't know how it's going
- 25:44Speaker 1: to ruin your career because I was married to one
- 25:47Speaker 1: and he's love with everybody. Okay, Now, the investigation has
- 25:55Speaker 1: been a carousal of red herrings. The Vet was innocent,
- 26:00Speaker 1: The boarding house manager with the gun collection was a

- 32:37Speaker 1: of a victim who existed on the fringes of. Society
- 32:43Speaker 1: While Maxine ferrell searched For annie's. Name Robert hansen was

- 36:13Speaker 1: decade refinding his ability to immobilize his. Prey, guys that
- 36:20Speaker 1: gives me goosebumps and chills to this. Day okay. Now
- 36:27Speaker 1: lisa was reported missing the very next, Day september. Seventh

- 36:35Speaker 1: that people noticed she was missing. From she wasn't a.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Drifter she had a, job a, schedule and people who
- 36:44Speaker 1: expected her to show. Up. Now her disappearance sent a
- 36:49Speaker 1: shockwave through The Bush. Company this was the same club
- 36:54Speaker 1: where just six months, Earlier Christy hayes had spot At
- 36:58Speaker 1: Robert hansen and called the. Police this was the same
- 37:02Speaker 1: club Where hansen sat in the dark booth peeking around

- 38:59Speaker 1: eklutna cooling in the. Morn, yet Because lisa was just
- 39:04Speaker 1: another dancer and forty two years, old the urgency from
- 39:09Speaker 1: the higher ups was still. Lagging the investigators were beginning
- 39:13Speaker 1: to look at the date as the common. Denominator the
- 39:17Speaker 1: unknown man who waited outside the clubs offering a ride
- 39:22Speaker 1: for a few dollars and then erase these women from the.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Map Robert hansen had struck, again right in the heart
- 39:31Speaker 1: of the, city at a club he frequented. Regularly he
- 39:36Speaker 1: was hiding in plane sight, guys banking on the fact
- 39:41Speaker 1: that the police would never think the local baker was
- 39:46Speaker 1: the date who never brought these women. Home of, course

- 39:52Speaker 1: job and do? That, okay why would they come? On?

- 40:29Speaker 1: the blood of the foun and the shadows of the.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Missing Joanna messini was a name and a file Ensewered.
- 40:39Speaker 1: Eklutna annie was a city girl without a name in

- 41:17Speaker 1: still looking at these cases as isolated, tragedies unconnected flickers of,
- 41:23Speaker 1: violence and a rough and tumble frontier. Town but as
- 41:30Speaker 1: the calendar turned to nineteen eighty, one the predator wasn't.
- 41:34Speaker 1: Retreating he was. Emboldened the winter was merely a time for,
- 41:41Speaker 1: maintenance sharpening the, knives cleaning the, rifle and setting the
- 41:47Speaker 1: flight charts for the spring. Fall that just the women
- 41:54Speaker 1: of the strip were starting to realize that going on

- 54:53Speaker 1: conclusion to a year where the hunter perfected his. Craft
- 55:00Speaker 1: Robert hansen was no longer just a predator hiding in the.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Woods he was an invisible architect of these, disappearances moving
- 55:09Speaker 1: through the city with the confidence of a man who
- 55:12Speaker 1: believed he would never be held accountable for the women
- 55:16Speaker 1: he plucked from the neon lit streets Of. Anchorage, Anchorage, you, Guys,

- 55:33Speaker 1: began with the city Of anchorage reaching a breaking. Point
- 55:38Speaker 1: the veneer of the Butcher baker's ananimity was starting to,
- 55:43Speaker 1: crack not just because of police, work but because the
- 55:49Speaker 1: community itself was beginning to boil over with. Rage so are?
- 55:55Speaker 1: We so are? We so are? We On february, fourth
- 56:02Speaker 1: nineteen eighty, two the reality of this situation was laid.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Bare veteran Investigator Maxine ferrell stood before the press with
- 56:15Speaker 1: a devastating. Admission seven, women six of them, dancers from
- 56:22Speaker 1: the downtown topless, clubs had vanished in the last twenty.
- 56:27Speaker 1: Months lady And, gray you're absolutely, Correct alaska law, enforcement

- 56:40Speaker 1: Okay all of these girls were missing and we don't
- 56:46Speaker 1: know where they. Went farrell stated she had spent months,
- 56:50Speaker 1: traveling calling and pleading with the families of the, lost
- 56:55Speaker 1: only to hear the same harrowing response, silence no, postcards
- 57:04Speaker 1: no phone, calls no running weight to start, over just
- 57:10Speaker 1: the gut wrenching confirmation that their loved ones were. Gone, man,
- 57:20Speaker 1: GUYS i that is just. Horrific While John lucking And
- 57:28Speaker 1: Chuck miller were struggling with The Joanna messina, murder a
- 57:35Speaker 1: larger problem loomed on the, horizon you don't. Say the
- 57:41Speaker 1: first person to notice the larger issue Was Maxine ferrell
- 57:46Speaker 1: with The Anchorage Police. Department farrell was, troubled deeply. Troubled,
- 57:54Speaker 1: now while all of this was taking, Place Maxine ferrell
- 57:58Speaker 1: of The Anchorage Police department noticed what looked like a
- 58:01Speaker 1: strange new. Development she was used to dancers being reported
- 58:07Speaker 1: missing only to turn up, later but now topless dancers
- 58:13Speaker 1: in The anchorage area seemed to be turning up missing
- 58:17Speaker 1: with increasing, frequency and not very many of them were
- 58:23Speaker 1: turning up. Again the press picked up on the story
- 58:28Speaker 1: and headlined the disappearances with some. Alarm, now when some
- 58:33Speaker 1: of the missing dancers eventually return eventually turned up in other. Cities,
- 58:39Speaker 1: however the newspapers lost interest in the, story But Maxine
- 58:44Speaker 1: ferrell never lost. Interest in, fact as nineteen eighty stretched
- 58:50Speaker 1: into nineteen eighty. One in nineteen eighty, two it was
- 58:54Speaker 1: evident to everyone in law enforcement that something was a
- 58:58Speaker 1: Miss are? Amiss that's. Something And, yet While Maxine ferrell
- 59:05Speaker 1: was the most, suspicious even her suspicions were difficult to.
- 59:09Speaker 1: Document the lifestyles of these women made it almost impossible
- 59:17Speaker 1: to determine if there were a large number of missing.
- 59:20Speaker 1: Dancers several factors were important in. This yes he, did
- 59:30Speaker 1: he was, escalating to say the. LEAST i, mean he
- 59:33Speaker 1: kind of was given a. Pass he was kind of
- 59:36Speaker 1: told that, he you, know wasn't doing anything. Wrong it
- 59:40Speaker 1: was let go. Now the same night That Maxine ferrell
- 59:46Speaker 1: told the city Of anchorage about the connection of the missing,
- 59:50Speaker 1: dancers The Wild Cherry, club the very place Where Sherry
- 59:55Speaker 1: morrow had once, danced was plunged into a state of. Panic,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: guys The Alaskan Bush, company the Kit, kat The Wild.
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Cherry can we get some better? Names can we just
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: get some better? Names? Okay an anonymous tip at eleven
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: twenty FOUR pm warned a bomb. Okay when police cleared
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: the building and bombed disposal crews moved, in they discovered
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: a vice inside a restroom toilet tank that at, first
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: very first, glance looked like a death. Trap there were safety,
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: flares loose, wires, transistors and an alarm, clock all bundled
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: to mimic a stick of high GRADE c four. Explosive it,
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: was As Police Chief Brian porter later, confirmed a theatrical
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: prop fake designed to, terrify not to, Kill but the
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: message left on the device was. Unmistakable someone In anchorage
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: was watching the same pattern the police were. Seeing someone
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: was furious at the club, owners the, establishment and perhaps
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: the city itself for failing to stop the predator who
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: was plucking dancers off The Fourth avenue scene one by.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: One Chief porter and THE apd treated the bomb scare
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: as of a, distraction but it was actually a symptom
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: of a deeper social societal. Sickness the city was beginning
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: to realize that the disappearances weren't just, isolating isolated. Events
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: they were a systematic. Failure the police had seven, names seven,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: faces and a growing stack of files that they were
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: still operating in the dark. Now Whether Robert hansen planted
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: that fake bomb remains one of the, million many what
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: if questions in the entire. Case while we don't have
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: a smoking, gun like a, confession or a fingerprint on
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: the alarm clock that we know, of who, knows police
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: may not even have looked for all we, know there
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: are several reasons why a few investigators in true crime
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: historians have long suspected it might have been his, work,
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: or at the very, least a move he found deeply.
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Satisfying hanson viewed himself as the smartest person in any.
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: Room he was obsessed with, control and he had a
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: profound contempt for the. POLICE a fake bomb is the
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: ultimate theatric called crime because it forces the police to stop,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: everything clear, buildings and sweat under the pressure of a potential,
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: disaster all for a device that was never meant to go.
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: Off it would have allowed him to watch from a
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: safe distance while the chaos he created paralyzed the. City
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: he would have loved, That, okay he would have loved
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: That The Wild cherry wasn't just any, club it was
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: his own hunting. Ground by placing a fake bond, there
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: he was effectively threatening his own. Inventory but more, importantly
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: it sent a message to everyone THAT i am in
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: control of this space and you are all under my.
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: THUMB i hate, him. GUYS i really didn't THINK i
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: could hate him, more BUT i. Do Chief porter specifically
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: noted that the writing on the bomb suggested someone was
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: mad at the establishment for missing. Girls hanson was an
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: expert at. Projection throughout his, life he constantly blamed his
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: victims and the police for his own. Circumstances using a
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: note that mocked the police for their failures to find
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: the missing women fits his psychological profile of an arrogant
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: predator who mocks the incompetence of those trying to catch.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: Him and they are, incompetent they were, Okay he is right.
- 1:04:44Speaker 1: There even a broken clock is right twice a. Day
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: hanson's right once they're. Incompetent there's also the fact That
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: hanson was by trade a hunter and an outdoorsman who
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: was comfortable with. Guar fiddling with, flares, wires and electrical
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: components is exactly the kind of tinkering that he was known.
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: For he was a man who built his own, traps
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: modified his own. Aircraft, yeah, guys now it is equally
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: possible that the fake bomb was the work of a
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: furious member of the public or maybe a. Vigilante By
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: february nineteen eighty, two the panic And anchorage was. Absolute
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: the families of the missing were being, ignored and the
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: strip community was. Terrified it is entirely possible that someone,
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: else tired of the police in, action tried to force
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: the issue by creating a media. Spectacle whether or not
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: A hansom placed, it the bomb served his interests. Perfectly
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: it turned the police attention towards internal security and mad bombers,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: feather distracting them from the, quiet stuttering man who is
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: busy loading His piper Super cub for the next death.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: Flight it was a smoke, screen and in the game
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: of cat And mouse That hansome was, playing smoke screens
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: were his favorite. Weapon, okay, GUYS i really don't like this.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: GUY i really Don't. LAMA i think it was him.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: TOO i think it was. Him i'm, SORRY i think
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: it was. HIM i do. Now By may nineteen eighty,
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: two the predator wasn't just working The Anchorage. Strip he
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: was reading a script that had become lefully. Efficient Sue,

- 1:07:20Speaker 1: just haunt her, family it provided The anchorage to a
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: police department with the most chilling confirmation yet that they
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: were dealing with a singular repetitive. Predator, finally, guys, finally come, on, faiersly,
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: FINALLY i mean come. On she was described as, tenderhearted

- 1:19:49Speaker 1: flying and still looking for women who lived in the fast,
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: life women the police would assume had just taken. Off
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Tammy petters and was a trained, athlete a daughter who

- 1:20:12Speaker 1: disappear because she wanted. To she disappeared because she had been.
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: Silenced oh my, gosh oh that is just. Horrifying the
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: long agonizing silence for the family Of cherrymorrow ended On september,
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: twelfth nineteen eighty, two but the closure was, bitter and
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: the discovery would expose a shocking disconnect between the grim
- 1:20:43Speaker 1: reality of The alaskan wilderness and the official stance of the.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Law two moose hunters were working in the willow scrub
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: sandbars along The Kanik, river about a mile below The
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: Palmer Alternate Highway. Bridge the area was a desolate stretch of,
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: terrain accessibly accessible only by a, rough unmintained road or by.
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: Boat one of the, hunters ironically an off Duty anchorage police,
- 1:21:18Speaker 1: officer was making a final sweep near his. Camp as
- 1:21:23Speaker 1: the light began to. Fail he spotted a flash of
- 1:21:26Speaker 1: color in the. BRUSH a dark blue moon boot, nearby
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: half buried in the, silt lay a matching blue nylon ski.
- 1:21:38Speaker 1: Jacket between, them a bone joint protruded from the. Sand
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: the next, morning the horrific to truth was. Undeniable while
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: one thigh bone had been dug up and picked claim by,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: scavengers another bone remained anchored in the shallow. GRAVE a
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: kneecap was still attached by a flap of. Skin the
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: hunters called The Palmer state, troopers who began the grim
- 1:22:10Speaker 1: task of unearthing the remains of the woman the city
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: had been looking for Since november nineteen eighty. One the
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: autopsy was conducted by Doctor George, lindholm who made a
- 1:22:27Speaker 1: genteral comparison and determined that the body was in fact
- 1:22:32Speaker 1: that Of Sherry. Morrow he determined that the cause of
- 1:22:36Speaker 1: death was a gunshot wound after finding pieces of copper
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: jacketed bullet fragments in the victim's chest, cavity, GUYS i
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: just sope it was quick and, paitless. Okay despite the
- 1:22:53Speaker 1: discovery Of sherry's, body a woman who had disappeared after
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: leaving a note about a three hundred dollars an our
- 1:23:00Speaker 1: photo shoot At alice's two ten, cafe the official response
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: was one of staggering. Denial Trooper Lieutenant John shoffer publicly
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: stated that there was nothing to indicate the disappearances of
- 1:23:18Speaker 1: the other dancers were. Related, dude what a hole are
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: you living? IN i really need to? Know. Okay even
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: Investigator Maxine, ferrell who had been so close to the,
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: files echoed the, sentiment we don't believe that we have
- 1:23:39Speaker 1: a mass murderer out, there some psycho knocking off. Girls
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: but we have to cover every. Possibility. Ma'am excuse, me excuse.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Me could somebody please explain to me how in the
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: fuck they're not connecting the? Dots how how this refusal
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: to see the pattern was a crushing blow to the
- 1:24:07Speaker 1: families Of Roxanne, Eastland Lisa, patrelle And Siu. Luna the
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: police were looking at a map with pens scattered cross,
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: it yet they insisted the pins were falling at. Random, okay.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: Sure they called it naivete or greed that Led sherry
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: to the, sandbar framing her death as an isolated misfortune
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: rather than the work of a calculated. PREDATOR i, mean,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: guys they are. Idiots. Alaska you are. Stupid. OKAY i
- 1:24:44Speaker 1: don't like to use that, word but you're. Stupid you're, stupid.
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: Okay while the authorities leaned away from the serial killer,
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: theory crime stoppers offered a dollar reward for, information she
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: said it denial makes them look bad and hurts their state. Reputation,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: well this makes them look, worse, okay makes them look.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Worse so the investigation was. Stalled they knew where she
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: was last, Seen alice's two ten, cafe and they knew
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: why she was there the photo shoot. Lore but without
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: a name for the man who met her, there the
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: case threatened to go as cold as the glacier fed
- 1:25:33Speaker 1: waters of The. Kinic, however the discovery Of sherrymorrow changed
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: the geography of the investigation. Forever The Nick's river was
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: no longer just a scenic. Waterway it was now a confirmed.
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: Graveyard whether the police were ready to admit it or,
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: Not the Butcher baker had left a signature in the
- 1:26:03Speaker 1: sand that could no longer be. Ignored To Robert, hansen
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: nineteen eighty two had been a year of supreme. Confidence
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: he had watched the police dismissed the disappearance of Su.
- 1:26:18Speaker 1: Luna he had watched them struggle to identify The Bear
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: lady And Eklutna. Annie and he had watched them scratch
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: their heads over a fake bomb while he, continued just
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: bake and bread for the. Community, oh just the sweet little.
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: BAKER i, can't, guys AS i, CAN'T i. Can't as
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: the calendar turned to nineteen eighty, three The predator's huberus
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: was at its. Peak he believed the Vast alaskan wilderness
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: was his perfect, accomplice a vault that would never give
- 1:26:57Speaker 1: up its. Secrets the Three springfall was, coming and with
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: it a series of events that would strip away that
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: Meek baker mask. Forever, guys he is screwing up the,
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: eighties just like he did the, seventies and these stupid
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: people just don't get, it just don't get. It. Now
- 1:27:26Speaker 1: the transition from nineteen eighty two to nineteen eighty three
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: marked the end of the police's ability to look. Away but,
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: man they, tried oh we know they. Did the coincidence
- 1:27:39Speaker 1: theory was about to be obliterated by a seventeen year
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: Old Cindy, paulson who would do what no legal system
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: had managed to, do look the monster in the eye
- 1:27:52Speaker 1: and survive to tell the tell the silence was. Over
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: nineteen eighty three was the year the hunt turned back
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: on The. HUNTER i, mean, GUYS i just it's been
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: going on so. Long, okay this even a movie doesn't
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: have this, Much that is What i'm sitting here. Thinking
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: i'm like even a serial killer movie fictional fact a
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: stranger than. Fictional. Okay, now as nineteen eighty three, began
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: the Freezing Alaskan winner provided a grim sanctuary for the.
- 1:28:37Speaker 1: Predator the ground was iron hard and the mountain passes
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: were choked with, snow but the avenue remained. Active it
- 1:28:47Speaker 1: was during this cold stretch In february of nineteen eighty
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: three That Angela Lynde fettern. Disappeared Born september, fourteenth nineteen fifty,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: eight In, Seattle, Washington angela was twenty four years old
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: nearing twenty five when she crossed paths with the Butcher.
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: Baker like many before, her she was a young woman
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: who had sought out the opportunities of The northern, frontier
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: only to find herself caught in a cycle of. Silence
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: details About angela's final days are tragically, scarce a hallmark
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: of the Woman hansoon targeted during the winter. Months we
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: know she was a mother of a daughter Named. Christina
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: we know she was from The Pacific, northwest part of
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: the steady migration of young people looking for work In alaska's,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: booming rough edged. Economy, yes now you're, Right lama. Said
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: we know why any true crime doc On hansen don't
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: like to tell the whole. Story yet they don't want
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: to be Like TERRY. A lama and Call alaska out
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: on their. Bullshit, okay When angela vanished In, february her
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: absence was not immediately met with the alarm a met with.
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: Alarm let me try that, again. Guys her absence was
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: not immediately met with the alarm it deserved in the
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: eyes of an overwhelmed and often indifferent police. Force another
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: young woman disappearing from the downtown scene was a non. Event, seriously,
- 1:30:39Speaker 1: people we're in nineteen eighty three and they are still wearing.
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: Blinders what the absolute, hell, Guys the fact that this
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: is true should piss everybody. Else everybody should be screaming
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: at their device right now because they're still calling it
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: a non event. Event what in the actual? Fuckery, okay
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: they didn't see the daughter waiting for a phone call
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: that would never. Come they saw a file that lacked
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: a crime. Scene february was a specific time For Robert.
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: Hansen while His piper Super cub was often grounded by
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: the harshest, weather he remained a master of the local
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Hunt he. Did during these, months he relied more heavily
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: on his vehicle and his intimate knowledge of the anchorage,
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: outskirts places where a body could be hidden under the,
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: snow not to be discovered until the spring break up months.
- 1:31:46Speaker 1: Later Angela Lynde fvetterin's story is a sobering reminder of
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: the victims who exist in the periphery of the more famous.
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: Cases because there was no dramatic escape stories or her
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: high profile discovery scenes associated with her initial, disappearance her
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: name is often whispered rather than. Shouted yet she was a,
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: mother a. Daughter she was a twenty four year old
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: woman with a wife In seattle that she was never
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: able to return. To she meant, something, guys police. Officers
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: angela's disappearance at the start of the year set a
- 1:32:39Speaker 1: very dark tone for what was to. Come the predator
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: was no longer pacing. Himself he was operating with a,
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: cold mechanical. Frequency as the snow began to melt in
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: the coming, months the secrets he had buried in the,
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: winter the fate of women Like angela would slowly begin to,
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: surface forcing the city to look at the monster they
- 1:33:09Speaker 1: had allowed to live among. Them Alaska, police this is on, You,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: okay this is on. You march In alaska is a deceptive.
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: Month the days are, lengthening but the cold remains. Biting
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: okay and the city is often covered in a layer
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: of breakup slush and. Ice For, hanson this was a
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: transitional hunting. Period he was preparing His Piper Super club
- 1:33:44Speaker 1: for the coming flying, season but he was still prowling
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: the streets in his vehicles because he knows nobody's going
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: to stop. Him as the winter of nineteen eighty three
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: began and it's slow grueling transition into, spring the avenue
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: claimed another, Life dalynne or an Hold. ON i am, sorry,

- 1:35:00Speaker 1: why do you go From hawaii To? ALASKA i don't
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: get it out of state In. Hawaii that's just. Me
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: but she was seeking the record opportunity of The. North
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: after spending time on The, islands where her mother and,
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: Stepfather jean And William hanks. Resided i'm not shaming. Her
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: i'm just saying the cold AND i wouldn't do so.
- 1:35:22Speaker 1: Well she had been a resident Of alaska for about
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: a year and a, half just long enough to establish a,
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: life but not long enough to escape the notice of a.
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: Predator dylann was known to her friends and colleagues by
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: the Nickname, sugar working as a waitress in. Downtown in
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: the Downtown anchorage, scene she occupied the middle ground between
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: the transient night live and the service, industry a space
- 1:35:55Speaker 1: That Robert hansen watched with predatory. Intensity at, nineteen she
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: was a close knit part of a close knit family
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: with her Sisters, dawn who lived In, fairbanks And delina And,
- 1:36:12Speaker 1: missy who lived In. Hawaii despite the, distance she was
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: a daughter whose absence would be felt. Immediately When sugar
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: stopped showing up for her shifts and stopped calling home
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: In march of nineteen eighty, three the silence was. Deafening
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: her disappearance followed the grimly established. Pattern she was a young,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: woman relatively new to the, city working in the service
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: industry of The Fourth avenue district to the police in
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: nineteen eighty. Three she was yet another runaway or a
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: transient who had perhaps decided to head back To. Hawaii
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: did they check the flight? Manifest did they? Check i'm
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: asking Because i'm going to just go out on a
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: limb here and say. No they. Didn't they didn't see
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: the violence of her. Exit they only saw the empty
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: space she left. Behind, GUYS i have said this. BEFORE
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: i don't Like alaska and the police erg making me
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: hate them, too. Okay Teresa, watson a twenty two year
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: old woman From, Sacramento, california had found herself living in
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: The Palmer Anchorage, orbit a geographic triangle That Robert hansen
- 1:37:43Speaker 1: knew better than. Anyone On march twenty, fifth nineteen eighty,
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: Three teresa prepared for what she believed was a straightforward financial.
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: Opportunity sound, Familiar she told her. Roommate she was it
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: out to meet a man who had offered her three
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: hundred dollars for just a couple of hours of her. Company, sorry.
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: Guys When teresa walked out of her home That march,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: evening she wasn't just leaving for a. Date she was
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: stepping into a trap, that little did she, know had
- 1:38:25Speaker 1: been refined over a decade of. Violence she never returned
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: to her, roommate and her name was added to the
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: growing list of women who just didn't come. Home Teresa
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: watson's disappearance occurred in the same month as The Lynn,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: fries making a terrifying escalation and. Frequency hansen was striking
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: almost bi, weekly now suggesting that he no longer feared the.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: Law why should he fear the? Law why should? He
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: why should? He he was a man who believed he was.
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: Invisible the sheer volume of missing women in the first
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: quarter of nineteen eighty three was beginning to create a
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: pressurized environment for The Alaskan state, troopers and it should
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: they should have been feeling the. Heat the coolwinkidink, theory
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: AS i call, coincidence was that the authorities had, leaned
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: but they had leaned on during the discovery Of Sherry.
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Maury's morrow's body was becoming impossible to, maintain while the
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: police files On Teresa watson remained frustratingly then at the,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: time her disappearance served as one of the final weights
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: on a scale that was about to. Tip the darkest
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: chapter Of alaska's history was reaching its. Climax finally finally
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: took long. Enough Paula golding was a thirty one year
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: old health nut From arizona who had recently arrived In
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: alaska from the warmth Of, Kona. Hawaii, GUYS i can't
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: help but, Say lama AND i both kind of think
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: this was someone trafficking these women Through. Hawaii so many are,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: coming or was it like a non sactioned agency like
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: that other. ONE i don't. Know it's just awful suspicious
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: that so many women come From hawaii To. ALASKA i don't.
- 1:40:52Speaker 1: Know paula wasn't was a woman who didn't fit the
- 1:40:58Speaker 1: hard and mold of The Fourth avenue, scene and that
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: vulnerability is likely what Drew Robert hansen's, eye wh is
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: now making the dog's Food sorry for all that. Noise
- 1:41:15Speaker 1: paula was a newcomer to the. Industry she had worked
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: as a secretary In fairbanks before coming down To. Anchorage
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: In april of nineteen eighty. Three inexperienced and reportedly badly
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: in need of, money she walked into The Great Alaskan
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: Bush company On Fifth avenue and asked for a. Job Janice,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: shepherd a floor manager at the, club hired her on the,
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: spot noting that her good looks and eagerness were, great
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: but the transition wasn't. Easy paula was, modest and for
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: her first week she refused to dance anything but. TOPLESS i,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: remember this is The Bush. Company they want to see it.
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: All it took eight days for her to work up
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: the nerve to dance, bottomless a decision driven by the
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: promise of the higher tips she needed to fund her
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: planned return To. Hawaii she didn't Like, alaska and she
- 1:42:21Speaker 1: was already planning her. Exit she wanted to get the
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: hell out of. There. Okay on the very night she
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: finally got up the nerve to dance, nude she met
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: a man at the. Club he offered her two hundred
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: dollars just to meet him for lunch the following. Day
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: it seemed like a safe. Encounter it was a daylight,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: meeting a simple meal in, public and a quick. Payday
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: his only specific request was that she arrived by. Taxi hello,
- 1:42:55Speaker 1: eighties thank you for popping in to join this, horror horrific. Tale.
- 1:43:01Speaker 1: Okay On, Sunday april twenty, fourth nineteen eighty, Three Paula
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: golding called a cab and left her home for what
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: she thought was a harmless. Date she had been In
- 1:43:14Speaker 1: anchorage for only three. Weeks she told a friend that
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: very day that she was going back To. Hawaii she
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: never made it to the. Airport Because paula had no
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: relatives In alaska and it had only been at The
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: Bush company for eight, days her disappearance carried a particular
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: kind of silence to the. System she was the ultimate,
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: transient a woman with no, roots a brief employment, history
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: and a stated desire to leave the State. Alaska people
- 1:43:50Speaker 1: get there and they want to leave. You have you
- 1:43:52Speaker 1: thought about looking into? That they don't like staying? There?
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: Okay but To Robert, hanson she was the perfect. Target
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: he had scouted her at the, club tested her boundaries
- 1:44:06Speaker 1: with a low pressure lunch, offer and ensured she had
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: arrived in a way that left no vehicle for the
- 1:44:13Speaker 1: police to. Track paula would become another file in the
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: cabinet that was already overflowing with the names of women
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: who had gone to, lunch gone for a photo, shoot
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: gone for a, date and simply never came. Back by
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: the beginning of the summer of nineteen eighty, three the
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: neon mights Of, Anchorage Fourth avenue cast a long colt
- 1:44:43Speaker 1: shadow over a city in. Denial what had begun is
- 1:44:48Speaker 1: a series of whispered rumors and dressing rooms had transformed
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: in the documented ledger of the, lost from the season
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: experience of le The fatrell to the tenderhearted nature Of

- 1:50:19Speaker 1: doing a deeper dive into this case and saw the
- 1:50:23Speaker 1: number of victims and then the tragedies of the, SEVENTIES
- 1:50:27Speaker 1: i went straight To terry and, said we have to
- 1:50:31Speaker 1: cover all of these women and tell their. Stories otherwise
- 1:50:37Speaker 1: we're no better than the society and law enforcement that ignored.
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: Them it didn't take in much. Convincing tonight's episode isn't
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: just dedicated to humanizing these specific, women but also for
- 1:50:54Speaker 1: all of those out there living the same lifestyle and
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: feeling shamed by our, mind modern. SOCIETY i want them
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: all to know that you are, seen you are cared,
- 1:51:06Speaker 1: about and you are equal human. Beings AND i am
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: so sorry that this bias still. Exists, Okay, lama and,

- 1:51:33Speaker 1: Deserved that they helped tell the stories of all of
- 1:51:37Speaker 1: these women and what they must have went through as.
- 1:51:41Speaker 1: WELL i know society looks down on all these, women
- 1:51:48Speaker 1: that they are the true heroes of the. Story they
- 1:51:52Speaker 1: helped give voices to those who have been. SILENCED i
- 1:51:57Speaker 1: send all of my love and thoughts to the survivor
- 1:52:00Speaker 1: and of the families of these of the. Victims you
- 1:52:04Speaker 1: all deserved so so much, Better AND i am sorry
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: because none of them deserved any of. This none of
- 1:52:14Speaker 1: this should have ever. Happened we chose to tell the
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: whole story because it has to be talked. About we
- 1:52:23Speaker 1: can't continue silencing any more voices and allowing undeserved pats

- 1:52:54Speaker 1: it's one of the REASONS i love, you and it's
- 1:52:57Speaker 1: one of the reasons THAT i asked you to go
- 1:53:00Speaker 1: from producer to being co host and to being a
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: partner with me on this crazy true crime and mine time.
- 1:53:07Speaker 1: TRAIN i really appreciate. IT i didn't THINK i would

- 1:53:23Speaker 1: tell double each, that Because i'm never wrong when it
- 1:53:26Speaker 1: comes to. Him but what really sits heavy with me
- 1:53:30Speaker 1: in the stretch of history isn't just the, violence it's
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: the indifference that wrapped itself around. It these weren't invisible.
- 1:53:40Speaker 1: Women they were, daughters, mothers, friends people with, routines, voices
- 1:53:47Speaker 1: and they were lives that fucking, Mattered, okay and yet
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: over and over again they were reduced to labels like, drifter,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: lifestyle avenue, girl as if that somehow made their disappearances
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: easier to dismiss or their lives less worthy of. Urgency
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: that kind of thinking didn't just fail, them it protected
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: the man who was hunting. Them just LIKE i, say on.

- 1:54:37Speaker 1: one predator operating in the. Shadows it was a system
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: that kep looking. Away files were, fragmented reports were, Delayed
- 1:54:47Speaker 1: patterns that were so captain obvious were. IGNORED i bet
- 1:54:52Speaker 1: my six year old grandson could have put that shit together.
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: Faster there were enough warning signs to of the entire
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: map Of, anchorage and still no one wanted to say
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: what was happening out. Loud these women deserve to be
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: searched for with the same intensity as anyone. Else, instead
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: they were left to become ghosts long before anyone even
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: admitted they were. Gone once, again we see that law
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: enforcement prefers perfect victims into THAT i, say kiss my. Ass,
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: okay there is no such thing as a perfect. Victim
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: why because there's no perfect Human and, guys it's impossible
- 1:55:46Speaker 1: for me not to be. Livid, yes hindsight is a,
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: thing but damn you can see the moments where someone

- 1:55:58Speaker 1: paper even just reading a, newspaper, okay and they. Didn't
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: and because of, that the silence didn't just, Continue it got,
- 1:56:10Speaker 1: louder swallowing more, names more, lives more futures that never
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: got the chance they. Deserved and, guys he didn't oh the.
