- 0:07On April 8, 1975, the New York Islanders faced the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden for game one of the preliminary round of the 1975 NHL playoffs.
- 0:17The Islanders were coached by Al Arbor and were in the playoffs for the first time in the franchise's three-year history.
- 0:23The Rangers were coached by Emil Francis and were looking for better success in the playoffs than in the past,
- 0:28despite finishing with more than 90 points in each of the past seven seasons.
- 0:32They only made it to the Stanley Cup finals once when they lost to the Bruins in 1972.
- 0:36This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcers Marv Albert and Sal Massina.
- 0:42Thank you, Sal. And tonight's game is brought to you by Shaefe Revere, by Bristol Myers, makers of Vitelus,

- 1:00Tonight, game one of the best of three Stanley Cup playoff series between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders.
- 1:10Right now, Karl Martin on the public address running down the Sturdy Monarchs.
- 1:15Here are the officials hitting the ice. The referee tonight will be Wally Harris,
- 1:19and the linesman Leon Stickle and Bob Mungers will return after this word from Eastern Airlines.
- 1:28The people of Eastern Airlines are going to make the youngest have a good flight.

- 1:47You've got to believe. We're going to make you feel at home.

- 1:52We ought to be ready for our big trip.

- 2:20For reservations, call the travel specialist, your travel agent, or call Eastern the wings of man.
- 2:29The New York Rangers have hit the ice, and it will be Ed Chalkin and in goal for the Rangers,
- 2:34the fighting two-hour left in this first period. Eddie, in the regular season, finished at 3.48 over 37 games,
- 2:42allowed 120 goals, came up with one shutout.
- 2:45For the New York Adidas, who will be hitting the ice in custom, it will be Glenn Rett.
- 2:50He has 2.47 during the course of the regular season, over 25 games, about 59 goals,
- 2:57and has a 7.53. The Adidas have moved the way through the last two times up.
- 3:04This past Sunday here at the Garden, by the score of 6 to 4, that's the Adidas' first victory ever at Madison Square Garden.
- 3:12And last Saturday at the Nassau Coliseum, by the same score of 6-4.
- 3:17Rangers and Adidas have met six times this season. Rangers have won three, the Adidas have won two.
- 3:23One game ended in a tie, lifetime. These two clubs have met 17 times, with the Rangers winning 13,
- 3:30the Adidas winning three, and they play that one tie.
- 3:33Here at the Garden, the Rangers have beaten the Adidas seven times, and there's been one Adidas victory and the one tie.
- 3:40Those nine games here at the Garden, the Rangers outscored the Adidas by a margin of 38 goals to 17.
- 3:46Billy Faburn with nine goals is the Rangers' leading lifetime goal scorer against the New York Islanders.
- 3:54So in a series like this, in that it is a best two out of three,
- 4:00you hear the boos from the New York Islanders as they hit the ice with my goaltender, Glenn Rich.
- 4:06In a series like this, best two out of three, I would have to say that, of course we won't know until we look back after it's all over,
- 4:14that first goal tonight could be immense.
- 4:17Especially the type of hockey the Islanders play, a defensive type of game.
- 4:21If they should score the first goal, it'll be to their advantage, I think.
- 4:25The Rangers, of course, play a good defensive game when they're on, and they've been on.
- 4:30Atlanta, a perfect example, I mentioned this on the pregame show, the Rangers actually went out down 2-0 on Friday night
- 4:37and came up with three goals playing a defensive type of hockey, except for the one power play goal.
- 4:41Of course, you're all out offensively. And the big fact of them all is the goaltender.
- 4:45The hot goaltender in a three-game series, we talk about a hot goaltender in a seven-game series,
- 4:50but a three-game series is a patchy for a goaltender, really, if you can stay hot,
- 4:55and you play one hot game, you have the psychological advantage, and that can keep going.
- 5:00And a best of three, very, very little operating room. In other words, no room at all full of mistakes.
- 5:07We're in game five of a seven-game series is what it amounts to.
- 5:11Okay, both clubs lined up at their blue lines. Here's the playing and singing of our national anthem.
- 5:18The national anthem.
- 5:48The national anthem.
- 6:13The national anthem.
- 6:44So, no question, the crowd is sky-high tonight.
- 6:48This shades of Nick playoff time when the crowd begins its chant during the last bars of the national anthem.
- 6:56And they were up, Marv, but that's the loudest pregame roar I've ever heard here at the Garden.
- 7:00At this place, of course, it's a larger place than the old Garden, where the crowd noise doesn't get as loud.
- 7:06At all of Nick games, it's tremendous, but that's the loudest I've heard the crowd try to face off.
- 7:11Decibel level here at the start at the Garden is way up there.
- 7:17As we get set for the opening faceoff, referee Willie Harris standing between Andre St. Laurent and the others, John Rotel and the Rangers.
- 7:24And the Rangers control it. Grant Park back at his blue line, throws it ahead for John Rotel.
- 7:28Rotel to center, Rod Gilbert left, shoots in, knocked back the other way, then a whistle for an offside against the Rangers.
- 7:35Amell Francis starting out with Rotel at center, Gilbert on the right, Vickers left, Nick Beverly, Grant Park on the back line.
- 7:43Al Arbor with an immediate line change to get the line he wants, and that is Jude Pruitt at center for Ed Westfall on the right side.
- 7:51J.P. Parisi on the left, and it's Jerry Hart and Dennis Punchman back.
- 7:56Faceoff to go by the Rangers again, Park takes it back at the Ranger line.
- 8:00Grant Park slides it ahead for Beverly. Beverly up across the red line, shoots in across the out of the line, picked off by Gilbert,
- 8:06jumped down the play, put in by Rotel, angle shot is way off on the rebound, it's Park at the right point, dumps it back behind the out of the net.
- 8:14Rotel chasing in the corner with Westfall, Westfall tries to clear, cannot, kept in by Beverly, back hands it into the corner to Vickers,
- 8:20passed put in front, Rotel knocked away. Vickers after, takes a check from Hart, he and Rotel come together,
- 8:25but still is in the corner, Vickers in front, the dropout, but he could not get the stick on the bouncing puck,
- 8:30could not get the stick down, and the out of the line is moving up by Ceres Pruitt, oversteering at center,
- 8:34but stolen by Rotel, he's up for the out of the line, moving in on Hart, a drop for Park goes into the drive,
- 8:39and is blocked by Punchman going down to his knee, picked off by Pruitt, shoots it ahead to the right wing, Westfall with Parisi coming on the left,
- 8:46Westfall fires in, right side of Jockerman, played by Parisi, angle drive off the mark, kept alive by Westfall,
- 8:52flips over to Punchman, the angle of shot goes wide with Parisi, screening Jockerman, takes a hard check from the Jockerman,
- 8:59Parisi traces it down to the corner now, he's shot by Park, now Park hit by Pruitt, and steals, he throws to the side of it at the Westfall,
- 9:06in front, Parisi knocked away from him, picked off by Rotel, loses on a stick check, Beverly has behind the net,
- 9:12he loses to Pruitt, hard contact between Pruitt and Beverly, back behind the Ranger goal, puck's central to the corner now,
- 9:18it is taken by Jockerman, loses to Parisi, out to the point, Punchman on the screen, a shot, flips, they fade, and covered up by Jockerman,
- 9:25a lot of pushing and dribbling in front of it, once again with Beverly and Westfall and Pruitt getting involved,
- 9:31the Outers throwing a pretty fair attack on Ed Jockerman here at the start, we are a minute 40 in to period number one, no score,
- 9:42and a face off coming up, right side of the Ranger net.
- 9:45Ed Jockerman talking with Wally Harris now, he thought he was interfered by Druin, pushed Druin out, he was off balance,
- 9:51a shot almost coming from the point, catching Jockerman unaware, Eddie with a couple of good saves, Druin, Parisi, Westfall,
- 9:57doing a lot of digging, keeping the Rangers pinned in their end.
- 10:00Now both clubs make line changes, Rangers go with Walter Kajuk at center for Derek Sanderson and Bill Fairburn,
- 10:07Bob Bourne steps out with Trent Gillies on the left, Billy Harris right off the face, it is controlled by the Rangers,
- 10:13Greshner whips it around the boards for Sanderson, stick checked away by Marshall,
- 10:17but loose at the far side, taken back by Sanderson, he moves behind the Ranger net,
- 10:22Sanderson watched by the forechecking Bourne, starts up with a flip from O'Rourke, back the other way now Greshner,
- 10:28he moves to center, eludes the check of Lewis and then throws it away, picked off by Harris at the end of the line,
- 10:33he is bottled up by Kajuk, Kajuk stick checks it onto the stick of Greshner, but as Greshner throws in,
- 10:39Fairburn ahead of the play and offside and they'll bring it back.
- 10:43Both clubs have come out flying, both clubs digging hard, a lot of body contact here in the early moments,
- 10:49we are scoreless with 2-0-5 gone by, Kajuk will go on this face off against Bourne,
- 10:55they face outside the New York Islander blue line, it is Glenn Resch defending 2-hour right and Ed Schachman 2-hour left,
- 11:03Rangers skate left to right and the Islanders right to left, Lewis controls the face for the Islanders,
- 11:07cross-ice to Marshall, he is in heavy traffic, winds it around the boards, Ballewas tries to clear out,
- 11:12he cannot, Kajuk keeps it, he is sent us on the slot, a shot, stick to side by Resch, on the rebound,
- 11:17Fairburn comes together with Gillies in the corner, Kajuk comes over to work it free,
- 11:21throws it onto the point, Marrott cannot get to it, it is knocked aside by Harris,
- 11:25now Harris throws it out of the outer zone, he is tied up there, good checking by this,
- 11:28the trick line now, back pass for Marshall and Islander Rice ahead Ballewas,
- 11:32shoots it ahead to center out of Bourne, Bourne up to the range of line, throws it in,
- 11:37soft shot, stick to side by Schachman and cleared out, hard check by Gillies on Sanders and as Fairburn cuts in,
- 11:43takes the lead from Kajuk but he is ahead of the play and offside, so they will bring it back, face off coming up at center,
- 11:50South, Billy Harris on the last Islander, Rush trying to get behind the defense and Greshner trying to push him offside on a play,
- 11:57Kajuk checking back on the play, picking up the loose puck and Waller looks like his old self playing with those skates,
- 12:04he has had a lot of opportunities where he has po-checked the puck away from him,
- 12:07one opportunity from Billy Harris, still able to move the puck with the skates.
- 12:10On the face off, Rangers control once again, Park takes, holds it away from the forechecking Bourne,
- 12:16ahead now to center to Fairburn, a lead for Sanderson as he straddles the out of the line,
- 12:20he takes a check from Hart and goes flying and Putman comes up with the puck,
- 12:24circles deep in his own end, comes off the board, Hart tries to keep it,
- 12:28Kanaan is batted all the way down by Gillies, across the Ranger goal line, backboard Beverly, a whistle for Ising and they'll bring it back.
- 12:35Would you like to know how to pay for something special when you haven't got the cash?
- 12:40Well, just apply for command credit at Manufacturers' Hanover.
- 12:44Now with it you have a pool of money you can borrow from for emergencies or those buys of a lifetime, simply by writing a personal check.
- 12:52Command credit for Manufacturers' Hanover, it all adds up to a convenient way to pay for things when you haven't got the cash.
- 12:59Manufacturers' Hanover, it's banking the way you want it to be, remember FDIC, equal opportunity lender.
- 13:05On the face off, deep in out of the ice, sent back for Howard, the out of the goal line, Hart there for the out of the,
- 13:10comes off the boards intended for Howard, but it's off the mark and it carries all the way down across the Ranger goal line,
- 13:16Park backboard, watched by the forechecking St. Laurent, tosses it ahead, now Stamkowski winning at center, shoots in,
- 13:22it's deflected off to the right of Gresh, bounds behind him now, makes the stick stump for Hart, who throws it on the new boards for Howard.
- 13:28Howard out of the zone, moving on Park at center, shoots it ahead, stumped by the skates of Park, kicked away by St. Laurent,
- 13:34back past Iceberg, was intercepted by Stamkowski, throws it the other way, but inattentively, unattentively throws it deep in his own territory.
- 13:41Stamkowski comes over, looking to pin, Park is pushed along the boards and now the puck is pinned in, and play is called.
- 13:48Rangers almost got caught because Middleton fell down, but pass from Stamkowski intended for Middleton,
- 13:54and it ends up a frozen puck deep in Ranger ice, making for a face off to the right side of Chalkamon.
- 13:59Both teams, the defensemen making the plays in the offensive zone, the Ounters did it a couple of times,
- 14:05Brad Falk and Gresh are trying it, this time Jerry Hart keeping the puck in the Ranger end, intercepting that Stamkowski pass.
- 14:12Now the face between Stamkowski and St. Laurent, to the left of Chalkamon, comes to the point, Lewis a slap,
- 14:18knocked aside by the stick of Beverly, Beverly chases along with Nicebun,
- 14:21heart check issued by Nicebun on Beverly who rolls it around to the near side, now Park fires ahead,
- 14:26and here's Stamkowski on the rush to center, up across the outer of the line, he's hauled down, and a penalty upcoming.
- 14:32Stamkowski hauled down, and Wally Harris with the call, it is a trip against the Islanders.
- 14:37What a move by Peter Stamkowski, taking the breakout pass from Middleton,
- 14:41between a Ranger blue line and a center red line, caught Marshall committing himself,
- 14:45he was breaking for the hole between Marshall and Lewis, Marshall tried to cover up the hole,
- 14:50Stamkowski broke outside, and had not Marshall brought him down, Stemma would have been in on the breakaway.
- 14:56A trip on Burt Marshall, 4-0-4, and the Rangers have the man advantage right here,
- 15:02they go with Bertell at center, Vickers left, Faburn right, Park and Gilbert are back,
- 15:08elsewhere at the back, still second period, Boston leading Chicago 3-0,
- 15:14two of the goals scored within nine seconds of the second period by Ken O'Faddey,
- 15:19and LeBray Savard, and St. Louis leading Pittsburgh 2-0,
- 15:24later on Toronto will play the Kings in LA, here's the face,
- 15:27and out of the way, controlled by the Rangers, Park at the left point,
- 15:30ahead it goes to the far side for Vickers, back pass, center for Gilbert, deflects away,
- 15:34recovered by Faburn, close to the near court, blue Faburn circles, back to the right for Gilbert,
- 15:39he shoots, it goes wide, bounce over the board, kept in by Park, then knocked aside,
- 15:43and Westmore troops to center, has a two on one with Heading, Heading in across the Ranger line,
- 15:47Heading shoots, blocked, rebound, Heading across, doubled up by Chakraman, and kicked off by Gilbert,
- 15:52now here come the Rangers to center, a pass for Rattelle, he's to the out of the line,
- 15:56takes a heart check from Parkman, breaking up the play very well,
- 15:59and Heading comes up with a loose puck again, moves to center, he is checked in on the board by Park,
- 16:03who stops it and Faburn takes it away, now Faburn moving along the far side,
- 16:07he is met by Heading, Heading all over Faburn, they battle, now it is picked off by Park,
- 16:12Park's to candles to center, right wing feed, Chaubert, head for Rattelle,
- 16:16ahead of the play, offside, and they'll bring it back, a minute 10 remaining on that island,
- 16:20penalty to Burke Marshall, we have no score, first period, and no question, Sal,
- 16:25playoff hockey at its very best right here, and we're only five minutes in,
- 16:29but a lot of excitement, both clubs are hitting, both clubs are skating,
- 16:33and now one lucky break, Rob, Heading is Westmore, iced the puck, the puck deflecting off referee,
- 16:39or Lionsman Leon Stickle, setting up that island of two on one,
- 16:43break away, and he, Roger O'Bear, making the save, a great save on the shot by Heading,
- 16:48on the face off outside the out of the line, it comes to center, Chaubert, stick handles with it,
- 16:52cuts left on Westmore, leaves for Park, a return for Chaubert, Rangers try to get this power play going,
- 16:58now Chaubert goes in with a slap, that is blocked, and it bounds out of the zone,
- 17:01off the skate of Park, and taken up center by Park, 50 seconds remaining on that Burke Marshall penalty,
- 17:07here's Chaubert, up to the red line, a hit, Faburn crosses the out of the blue line, breaks wide,
- 17:11sends in Ford, and an almost beat Glenn Rush, it was actually a pass,
- 17:15and Rush was able to pick it off out of the air, with Rattelle weaving his stick in front,
- 17:21and what a tough play that was for Rush, that puck in the air going towards his feet,
- 17:25and he didn't know whether to reach down or not, Rattelle waving his stick, if he reached down too soon,
- 17:29and Rattelle does deflect it, it's bye bye, it'll go over his shoulder,
- 17:33now Rattelle will go against Westmore, facing left side of the islander net,
- 17:3842 seconds on the penalty, on the face, Heading takes, and quickly clears all the way down ice,
- 17:44in one motion he snaps it to the right side of Jock, and he snaps it now,
- 17:48for Gilbert, half minute remaining on that penalty, Gilbert wheels it around the boards for Faburn,
- 17:53Faburn met by the check of Park, loses control, if the range allow Rattelle recovers,
- 17:57goes cross ice, a wild pass, Park has to take and back skate away from Heading,
- 18:01Adler's doing a good job, Heading the ranger's in, now here's Park up to center,
- 18:05a lead for Rattelle, can't handle it, slides off his stick, Park chases it down,
- 18:09moves back to the other net, hoops it around the boards, Faburn keeps it up the near side,
- 18:13Faburn is turned around by Heading, looks to get it out, cannot,
- 18:16Joback comes over to work free, out it goes to Rattelle, there's a wide open shot,
- 18:19the snub shooter steps to Park, he shoots, it is deflected and falls short,
- 18:23clamped down by the goaltender, Rush, and he holds on, Rattelle had the open shot,
- 18:28but got the pastures left to Park, and Park's shot was a good one, but someone got a piece of it,
- 18:33and slowed it down, allowing for the cover up by Rush, and that does it for the Burt Markville penalty.
- 18:38The tennis pot middle got the piece of the shot by Brad Park, deflected it enough,
- 18:43where Steve Vickers, who was making his effort, or a run in front of Rush,
- 18:47in order to screen him out on the original shot, went right past the puck,
- 18:50puck just dribbling to Glenn Rush.
- 18:53Now Stamkowski steps on with Irvin on the left, Middleton right,
- 18:57Marotte and Greshner are back on the face off, St. Laurent for the outlander,
- 19:00shoots it out of the zone, played by Greshner at center,
- 19:03flicks it back to the outlander line, and then Dave Lewis fires it out to the ranger line,
- 19:07Marotte takes there, a lead off the ice, and tenor for Stamkowski,
- 19:10intercepted by the outlanders, now Lewis starts up on the near board,
- 19:13Lewis to center, throws it ahead, but it's broken up by Stamkowski,
- 19:17makes the turn, leads Middleton, broken up nicely by Howitt,
- 19:20snapping it back out to center ice, Marotte takes there, and guns in,
- 19:24but Stamkowski and Middleton both ahead of the play and offside.
- 19:27Let's break for this message from Alka Seltzer.
- 19:30Alka Seltzer brings you a message from the old one too.
- 19:33Well, your first flat in fifteen years, so you're holding up traffic for miles,
- 19:38and your wife is waiting with your favorite dinner, burnt lasagna.
- 19:42We'll be right there with the old one too.
- 19:48Alka Seltzer, let's get out of here!
- 19:51For aches and pains with upset stomach, try Alka Seltzer with specially buffered aspirin plus antacids,
- 19:56use only as directed. It gives the old one too, the old one too.
- 20:00Off the face, puck, loose along the boards, then a slap by Middleton as he works it free,
- 20:05goes wide out of the flexion and rolls around.
- 20:07Nice from Irvine, come together at the far side, doing some pretty good bumping as the puck is cleared out of the zone.
- 20:12Middleton takes it center, ahead for Greshner.
- 20:14Greshner rushing to the outer line, a drop for Irvine, knocked away by St. Laurent,
- 20:18and he shoots it out to center. Howitt, a hard check on Middleton in front of the outer bench,
- 20:22but as that puck crosses the outer line, Rangers ahead of the play and offside,
- 20:27and they'll bring it back. Face off now, outside the out of the blue line.
- 20:31This afternoon, as you heard here on WNEW, the Mets got off well behind Tom Siever.
- 20:36Goed out only six hits, the Mets beat the Phillies 2-1.
- 20:39Dave Kingman hit a home run, and the Mets open up with a victory.
- 20:43The Yankees beaten by the Indians in Cleveland 5-3 this afternoon.
- 20:48A successful managerial debut for Frank Robinson, who also having a flare for the dramatic hit a home run
- 20:56and his first out foul as a designated hitter.
- 21:00We gave the NHL playoff scores, the other action a moment ago,
- 21:04and the NBA, the Knicks playing at Houston, they're underway a couple of minutes ago,
- 21:08and Detroit at Seattle later start.
- 21:11The Nets off on the ABA, the one playoff game, Memphis at Kentucky.
- 21:16On the face off, at center, Kachuk slides it ahead, Marshall controls,
- 21:20ahead it goes now to Harris, breaks in across the Ranger line, jumps in left side of Chakamit.
- 21:25Harris with a hard check on Park, but Park gets to the puck.
- 21:28Now Park cuts to his right, with Stolus first period, 12 and a half a minute.
- 21:31Park up to center, a lead for Kachuk, who backhands it in,
- 21:34a roll, a right side of Rush, strays out to stop it, steers behind the nut for Harris.
- 21:38Harris starts on the middle side, loses to Folbert on a stick check, throws it in front,
- 21:42Kachuk cannot get to it, Phillies does, and starts up three man rush, three Rangers back,
- 21:46a flip on the right for Bourne, back pass, Harris shot, goes wide.
- 21:50Intended deflection by Phillies was off the mark, and then it's pinned in the corner,
- 21:54Gillies and Kachuk holding it in, and play is called.
- 21:57So face off now, keeping the ring for ice.
- 22:00No Ranger winger going, back on the play, and Gillies left all alone on that shot from the point.
- 22:05Chakamit, I think, may have gotten just a little piece of it to deflect it in the corner,
- 22:09had that shot been a little lower, a lot of trouble for the Rangers.
- 22:12Defensive makes a play in the corner, leaving that side of the ice open,
- 22:16and Billy Faburn, who was the right winger, was out covering the point,
- 22:19had a drift back to help out in front of that net.
- 22:21Bruin and Ratel on the face now, controlled by Greshner circling at the near side,
- 22:25hit by Parisi, but throws it ahead.
- 22:27Vickers cutting it on the left wing, overskates, and Westfall able to bat it back out of the zone.
- 22:31Played up center now by Gilbert. Gilbert circles, behind the back,
- 22:35Ratel crosses the out of the line, returns to Gilbert at the right point,
- 22:38looks to go cross-ice, but it's broken up by Bruin, back forward at center is Marat.
- 22:42Marat for the Rangers goes cross-ice to Gilbert, Gilbert down the center slot,
- 22:46he's up to the out of the line with a shot that has deflected wide, left side of Gresh,
- 22:50hard backboard in the corner, twists it around the boards,
- 22:53it is taken by Westfall at the far side, checked by Ratel as he sends to center to Druin.
- 22:58A lead on the left wing, Parisi across the Ranger line,
- 23:00checked hard by Greshner, loses control, the puck loose in the corner now,
- 23:04Greshner is there, along with Parisi, Parisi looks to set up,
- 23:08centering attempt knocked away by the stick of Chalkamon,
- 23:10and it comes to Gilbert at the near side and Ranger ice,
- 23:13shoots it out of the zone, but it's played up center by Dennis Putnam of the Onidas.
- 23:16Ahead now Parisi, taken out of the play by Marat,
- 23:19Parisi keeps going, catches over to the corner, centering feed,
- 23:22intercepted by Gilbert, and he starts up.
- 23:24Here's Gilbert at the center, feet on the right,
- 23:26Parikers on the off-wing, goes over the slap that is blocked by Hart,
- 23:29it pumps high in the air, rolls loose in the slot, still loose,
- 23:32Hartman dumped by Marat, and Hart comes up on the puck.
- 23:35Ahead to the left wing, Parisi shoots it out to center, intercepted by Greshner,
- 23:39Greshner around it through, and as both clubs change on the go,
- 23:42here's Greshner on the rush to the out of the line,
- 23:44pass mark, tries to penetrate, but it's turned around on the play by Putnam,
- 23:48and the puck cleared to the near side.
- 23:50Hart checked hard on the corner by Putnam as he clears all the way down.
- 23:53It's across the Ranger blue line, how it and Marat come together,
- 23:56they get to it at the same time, deflecting off their string,
- 23:59and through the crowd, the play is called.
- 24:01Couple of good checks, first by Gilles Marat on Dennis Putnam,
- 24:04and Butler in the corner on Hart,
- 24:06and the one on Putnam was a situation where the puck was up in the air
- 24:09as if you're holding two balls and throw one up in the air,
- 24:11as he's looking at that when you throw another ball or you hit the man,
- 24:14and that's exactly what happened to Putnam.
- 24:16For example, Billy Fairbury not covering up in front,
- 24:18the last Allender rush, Roger L'Bair taking the man in front,
- 24:21as Fairbury did not.
- 24:23On the face, Burt Marshall, a slap from the point,
- 24:25is stopped by the pads of Jockemet, comes to the corner,
- 24:28Butler is really ripped by Saint Laurent as the Rangers clear it out of the zone.
- 24:32Played up center by Howard, checked by Stankowski ahead,
- 24:35Neistrom as he throws it in, left side of Jockemet, chased down by Pevely,
- 24:39he's hit by Neistrom, Pevely cuts to the near side,
- 24:41and Pevely looks to clear out, cannot get him by Howard,
- 24:43his drive is wide, out of deflection,
- 24:45and now the puck picked up behind the net by Park, Park starting up,
- 24:49Park ahead now for Pevely, Pevely is up to center,
- 24:52a lead for Stankowski, and across the line, but a whistle for an offside.
- 24:57Things are getting very testy out there now,
- 24:59so just a moment ago, Neistrom and Urban collided, landed on each other at center ice,
- 25:05neither would let the other get up,
- 25:07and then finally when Urban was able to pull away, took a couple of shoves from Neistrom.
- 25:11Neistrom throwing a little glove hand on Urban's face.
- 25:14Stankowski on the face with Saint Laurent, controlled by the Onidas in their own end,
- 25:18Lewis on the left defense starts up, he carries to center,
- 25:21shoots it ahead on the right wing, batted the other way by Urban, who dumps in.
- 25:25Left side of the islander net, picked up by Burt Marshall,
- 25:29throws to center ice now to Saint Laurent, he's watched by Park,
- 25:32Saint Laurent spins away back to his blue line,
- 25:35and then sends out the right defense for Marshall, back to Saint Laurent,
- 25:38off his stick, rolls to Park at the range of line, and he sends ahead.
- 25:41Now the Rangers move up, Stankowski to the red line, shoots in, left side of Glenn Rush,
- 25:46chased down to the corner by Lewis, hit hard by Butler,
- 25:49and we have a penalty upcoming, penalty upcoming against the Rangers.
- 25:53Neistrom starts up, the extra pull it on, here's a pass for Marshall,
- 25:57Marshall cuts in, but we get a whistle with an outbreak in the corner.
- 26:01Howard and Urban are going at each other, in the corner,
- 26:04now Neistrom comes flying over, and let's see what is occurring in the corner,
- 26:08we're completely screened out, I saw Urban kind of shove Howard away,
- 26:14and that's the last I saw of both as they both hit the ice,
- 26:18to our right, and Dave Lewis and Jerry Butler, who are the guys who started it all,
- 26:25are now doing some pushing and shoving with the referee Wally Harris,
- 26:28trying to separate them.
- 26:30The last I saw before they went down, Bob, was Teddy Urban pushing Howard down
- 26:34and getting on top of him, and we can't see any more after that.
- 26:37Howard's helmet's off, and I saw Urban grab for Howard's head as he was going down,
- 26:42and I think that's what he was looking for, to take off Howard's helmet.
- 26:45Take off his head, sir?
- 26:47Yeah, it's tough standing on a table, Bob.
- 26:52From what we saw, it did not appear that any hard punchers were landed,
- 26:57as they ended up wrestling down to the ice.
- 27:00I think we're going to see Urban, Howard go in, and probably Butler,
- 27:04who was going to draw that original penalty.
- 27:07The Boston Brawns now lead the Chicago Blackhawks 6-0.
- 27:13And the second period, Bruins 6-0, up on the Boston guy.
- 27:18Well, Blackhawks going through the playoffs the same way they played the year, Bob.
- 27:21They had a disappointing year. They've had a lot of injuries also with Bill White,
- 27:25Phil Russell out for a while, White out three-quarters of the season,
- 27:29and just not the team that they were.
- 27:31Dennis Hollis played hurt, missed quite a few games down the stretch.
- 27:37St. Louis over Pittsburgh, 2-0 in the second period.
- 27:41The Penguins, who have been nearly invincible at home,
- 27:44are trailing the Blues in the second at home.
- 27:47Bob, I got a kick out of that, what Carl Martin just said, New York penalties.
- 27:52It just struck me funny when he said it, we have the two New York teams.
- 27:58Getting back to St. Louis, I guess you have to be there.
- 28:04There are the penalties being handed out on the islanders, Gary Howitt,
- 28:11five minutes per fighting.
- 28:13Jerry Butler, two minutes per elbowing.
- 28:17And Ted Irvin gets a five for fighting on a 10-48.
- 28:21So Irvin and Howitt will be unavailable for the next five minutes.
- 28:26Those two penalties will not affect player strength on ice,
- 28:30but Jerry Butler's elbowing penalty will,
- 28:32and so the islanders have the man advantage for two minutes.
- 28:35Time of the penalty, 10-48.
- 28:37Let's pause right here for station identification.
- 28:40This is WNEW in New York.
- 28:42Now we broadcast these games for your enjoyment,
- 28:45and also my show, the Gene Clavin show, from 5.30 to 10.
- 28:48Marv, if you need help, I'm here.
- 28:50Okay, Gene, play back in off the faceoff.
- 28:52Rangers can follow that on it.
- 28:54And Beveley takes and shoots it all the way down.
- 28:56Fairburn after it in the corner, along with Dennis Potman.
- 28:59They come together.
- 29:00Now Potman cuts back behind his net, trickles it over to brother John.
- 29:04Back the other way to Dennis.
- 29:05Standing back behind the islander net, now he starts up.
- 29:08The islanders have the man advantage.
- 29:09We're scoreless, first period, 8.45 for Manny.
- 29:12Bourne to center, back pass for Potman.
- 29:14Has to start it all over again.
- 29:15This is Dennis handling it at center.
- 29:17Now cross-ice to John Potman, and he dumps it in.
- 29:19Left side of Jockeman, and he steers it behind the net.
- 29:22Park is there, checked by Bourne.
- 29:24Park winds it around for Fairburn, looks to clear and he does.
- 29:27Throws it past Dennis Potman all the way down.
- 29:30John Potman back forward.
- 29:32Walter Kachuk, four checks.
- 29:33Now John holds up back behind the net and regroups the foul play
- 29:37with a minute 10 remaining on the Ranger penalty to Jerry Butler.
- 29:40John Potman to center, shoots in.
- 29:42Left side of Jockeman, plays it off to Mors, then whips it around to the far side.
- 29:46Bourne able to keep in.
- 29:47Out to the point, it goes to John Potman.
- 29:48Back to Bourne at the far side.
- 29:50Hisslap, stick save, played by Jockeman and cleared by Park.
- 29:54Stopped by the goaltender, Resch, to the left of the net.
- 29:57Islanders change on the fly.
- 29:59West ball steps off.
- 30:00Dennis Potman's pass stolen at center by Kachuk.
- 30:02Back pass to Beverly at the Ranger line.
- 30:04Cross-ice now, Park 40 seconds remaining on the penalty.
- 30:07A hit Fairburn at center.
- 30:08Over to Kachuk, and they're out of the line.
- 30:10Hisslap, deflects wide off the stick of John Potman.
- 30:12Resch comes out to clear it around the boards, but Kachuk
- 30:14steers back forward and throws it out to center to Park.
- 30:17Rangers doing a good job killing off this penalty.
- 30:20Now Park starts up, comes back the other way away from Bruin,
- 30:23rolls cross-ice to Maroc.
- 30:25Deep in his own head, Maroc shoots it out, but it's intercepted by
- 30:27Felici, knocked away by Fairburn, gets it over to Kachuk.
- 30:30Back it goes to Maroc, cross-ice Park.
- 30:32Rangers doing the job, killing McClark.
- 30:34Now Park comes back the other way, 10 seconds on the penalty.
- 30:37Now the crowd roaring as Park stands at center.
- 30:39Move to the Ranger line.
- 30:41Now puts it over to Fairburn.
- 30:42Fairburn circles at center.
- 30:44Back off to Park.
- 30:45Back over to the penalty, standing ovation for the Rangers.
- 30:48Kachuk starts up as Butler coming in.
- 30:50Here's Kachuk trying to leave Butler with the pass off the mark
- 30:53all the way down across the goal line of the Islanders.
- 30:56Cut fade, and we got a whistle through icing.
- 30:58Near breakaway by Joey Butler, but he was not spotted when he
- 31:04cut toward that islander blue line, but now an ovation for
- 31:07this penalty killing effort by the New York Rangers.
- 31:10Islanders did a great job of killing the penalty against the
- 31:12Rangers, but nowhere near that one.
- 31:14The only shot Bobby Bourne from way across the ice against the
- 31:18far boards, taking a shot from the angle that Jockeman handled.
- 31:21And then Kachuk, Fairburn, Park, and Marat killing off about
- 31:2550 seconds with the Islanders not even seeing the ball.
- 31:28Off the face, shot by St. Laurent, the flex.
- 31:30Right in front, Jockeman clearing it out of the board.
- 31:32Middleton shoots it out to center.
- 31:34Lay down at center by Burke Markle on the outer,
- 31:36shoots in back behind it.
- 31:37Jockeman makes the stick stop and leaves it for Marat.
- 31:41Marat counts off the board.
- 31:42Out of the stick, a metal pin shoots it to the left-wing
- 31:44Poulos who makes his first appearance of the night.
- 31:46Poulos' pass into something by Markle ahead from Nicegrim.
- 31:49He's trapped down the play by Marat.
- 31:51Nicegrim bites his way to the ranger line, loses control,
- 31:53and Sanderson takes back passes to Krashner.
- 31:56He's hit by McCullough and is retrieved by Markle.
- 31:58Chopped down by Marat as he shoots in.
- 32:00Left side of Jockeman, Sanderson back forward.
- 32:03Take the ball out, takes it back for Markle, loses control.
- 32:06McCullough goes in with a backhand and a stop by Sanderson.
- 32:09A stop by Poulos, two men rushed for the ranger, two out of the
- 32:12back. Poulos leads it ahead for Middleton, but it's intercepted
- 32:15by Lewis of the Islanders who shoots it out of the zone.
- 32:17Here's Billy McMillan at center, throwing in.
- 32:20Left side of the net by Jockeman, holds it away from
- 32:22Nicegrim, sweeps it around to the near side.
- 32:24Middleton there, checked by Saint-Gerard, looks to clear out
- 32:26Knot, kept in by McMillan.
- 32:28McMillan banks it off the boards for Nicegrim.
- 32:30Nicegrim cuts to the corner.
- 32:31Nicegrim, Sanderson, no one there.
- 32:33Taken down by Lewis at the point.
- 32:34His shot is...
- 32:35Whoa! That's a midsection by Jockeman and a whoop-ah!
- 32:39Jockeman juggles.
- 32:41Adds some words now between Andre Saint-Laurent and
- 32:45Ron Greshner.
- 32:46The two licensed Leon Stickerman and Bob Hunter's
- 32:49immediately intervene and nothing serious develops.
- 32:52We're going to face off now to the right side of the ranger
- 32:55at 5.52. Remaining close for a no-score.
- 32:59It has been a superb post-mourning of Jockeman.
- 33:02Very exciting game, close checking him on the rangers.
- 33:05Again, getting a curveball.
- 33:06And Middleton and Pruitt, Pruitt is standing stationary
- 33:09on the left board.
- 33:10Sanderson couldn't be able to work the poke against him
- 33:12as the island of offense just moves up.
- 33:14Sanderson had to make a play in the middle, almost got
- 33:16trapped, had to come back and make a good save himself.
- 33:18And then Middleton, three rangers, one islander around,
- 33:20gave the puck away.
- 33:21On the faceoff, Jephen Ranger, ice-torn control,
- 33:24spins back behind us.
- 33:25That trail by Pruitt throws it ahead.
- 33:27Here's Patel out of the zone.
- 33:28Vickers left, Gilber right.
- 33:29A lead for Gilber knocked away.
- 33:31Rod keeps it alive.
- 33:32On a back pass, he's stuck on the play.
- 33:34Penalty upcoming.
- 33:35Penalty against the islanders.
- 33:36A hook call on J.P. Parisi.
- 33:40And so the rangers will have the man of honor.
- 33:43Gilber trying to break through, and Parisi did not know
- 33:46what Gilber was going to do.
- 33:47Gilber made a drop pass.
- 33:49And Parisi would have known that.
- 33:51He would not have pulled him down past it.
- 33:54Eventually ended on the stick of an islander
- 33:56and came out of the zone.
- 33:57That's a bad play going in the middle like that,
- 33:59making a drop pass.
- 34:00That's what he did, but Rangers lucked out on the play
- 34:03as Parisi picked up the penalty.
- 34:05A tie with a hook.
- 34:0614-21, Parisi out for two.
- 34:09Rangers have the man advantage.
- 34:12Rotella front with Vickers.
- 34:13And Pari, left it.
- 34:14And Pari, back it.
- 34:15And Pari, spins it.
- 34:16And Pari, the face closing all the way down.
- 34:18Jockeman sprays out 10 feet to his left to stop it
- 34:21and leaves it out for Gilber.
- 34:23Gilber looks to start off on the line of work.
- 34:26And he's going to be by the west of you with it.
- 34:31And you make your way to the last one.
- 34:33Should get better gas mileage.
- 34:35Throws it on the stick of left-hander.
- 34:37And a swept aside by Barber.
- 34:39Clears back foot.
- 34:40You save yourself time, too, by minimizing the change
- 34:43in the foil.
- 34:44Henning gets to the front.
- 34:45Barber is doing a good job.
- 34:46Henning takes that clear all the way down.
- 34:49Right side of Jockeman.
- 34:50A minute and 20 remaining on the J.P. Parisi penalty.
- 34:53Rangers have the man advantage.
- 34:54They are sort of first period five minutes remaining.
- 34:56Just find out for yourself.
- 34:58All about four.
- 34:59Now parked up to center.
- 35:00Beat on the left for Vickers.
- 35:02Across the end of the line, a hit for Witell.
- 35:04Knocked away, back pass for it.
- 35:05Francis Donald up, gets it ahead with Gilber.
- 35:07Gives him the chance to answer.
- 35:09And Vickers.
- 35:10And a beauty by Gresh.
- 35:12He was able to hold on between the pads.
- 35:18Vickers paces off to the right side of the out on the net.
- 35:21I say, Gresh.
- 35:22You're dead, Bob.
- 35:23Great anticipation by Gresh on the play.
- 35:25He knew Gilber.
- 35:27Using anticipation.
- 35:30Gilber shooting.
- 35:32He knew Vickers was to his right.
- 35:33He went for the stack pad.
- 35:35The play to the flexion by Vickers.
- 35:37Beautiful anticipation by Gresh to make that save.
- 35:39Mark face off to the right side of Clement Rich.
- 35:42It is controlled by Vickers.
- 35:44Up to Mark Harkin.
- 35:45Vickers comes to the front.
- 35:47Mark Stucanos ahead of Joe Stado.
- 35:49Vickers back to Gilber.
- 35:51The park takes the shot.
- 35:52Flies it over to Faber at the near corner.
- 35:54Faber is checked down the plays.
- 35:56Faber is tied up.
- 35:58Lewis comes over to work it through.
- 36:00He pushes it.
- 36:01Faber loses control and Rush is able to clap the glove down.
- 36:07And hold on at the side of the net.
- 36:09Four seventeen left in the center.
- 36:12It's still 38 seconds remaining on that island of penalty.
- 36:16Greshie at the end of one in Houston.
- 36:18And Dave Warner versus the strong and a player on the next 27.
- 36:22Houston Rockets 24.
- 36:24One more to play next 27.
- 36:26Rockets 24.
- 36:28Face off to the side of Glenn Rush.
- 36:30Faber, Vickers up front.
- 36:33Chopin in front.
- 36:35On the back line.
- 36:37Westboro reserve against Bratton on the space off.
- 36:40But Lewis sent to the left of Rush.
- 36:42Picked off by Marshall.
- 36:43Whips it around the board.
- 36:44Mark can't keep in.
- 36:45Knocked the side.
- 36:46Westboro takes it center.
- 36:47One man back at Joe Bear.
- 36:48Westboro across the range of the shot blocked by Joe Bear.
- 36:51Picked off by Rotel.
- 36:52And the Rangers move up.
- 36:53Now to Joe Bear's center.
- 36:55Joe Bear up across the out of the line.
- 36:56Joe Bear breaks for the far side.
- 36:58Joe Bear cuts in.
- 36:59A fast little backhander is doubled up by Rush.
- 37:02And he holds on.
- 37:04Rotel did not get the good shot off.
- 37:06A soft bouncer that could have been tricky.
- 37:09But Rush hanging right in.
- 37:11Was able to come up with the glove save.
- 37:13And we have sixteen seconds remaining on that three-seat penalty.
- 37:16Eddie Westphal doing a good job keeping the Rangers pinned.
- 37:19Again, Roger Bear had to make the save in the Ranger end.
- 37:22But this time, Joe Bear working to poke in at a crowd.
- 37:25Was able to go to the opposite side and set up Rotel for that play.
- 37:28But as you said Bob, the pass up in the air.
- 37:30Rotel swiping at it and Rush had the angle completely.
- 37:34The combination of Ed Westphal and Lauren Heading.
- 37:37One of the better penalty killing units in the National Hockey League.
- 37:41They have done the job throughout the season.
- 37:44Westphal and Heading remain on the face off.
- 37:46It's sent to the air boards. Heading is after it.
- 37:48Clears it all the way down. Slapping it past Park.
- 37:51And sending the length of the ice. That will do it for the penalty.
- 37:54Beverly back forward now as Parisi gets set to return.
- 37:57Here's Beverly to center. Parisi back.
- 37:59Flip for Stamkowski on the right.
- 38:01Gets a check from Saint-Laurent.
- 38:03Up high as he crossed the out of the line.
- 38:05That is knocked away by Park who sends all the way down.
- 38:07Park back forward. Three and a half remaining.
- 38:09First three at no score.
- 38:11Beverly from Park. Ahead now Butler at center.
- 38:13Butler then flips in.
- 38:15Right side of Resch.
- 38:17Resch jumps it for Habit up for Nicebrunn.
- 38:19Those penalties on Howitt and Butler have expired.
- 38:22He takes away from Park and feeds in close to Beverly.
- 38:24But it's knocked aside by Hart.
- 38:26Out of the stick of McMillan at center.
- 38:28McMillan checked off the puck by Greshner.
- 38:30But it's picked up by Saint-Laurent.
- 38:32Crosses the range a lot. Breaks wide on Beverly.
- 38:34Beverly gives him no angle but he feeds in front to McMillan.
- 38:36McMillan cannot get the shot off.
- 38:38Miller and McMillan is dumped down the play.
- 38:40Butler tries to pick up by Park.
- 38:42But on the rebound it's played by Urban at the far side.
- 38:45Howitt's had a great opportunity.
- 38:47A lead for Stankowski across the out of the line.
- 38:49Back for Urban. It's too deep.
- 38:51And it's picked up by Nicebrunn.
- 38:53As we go back the other way. Nicebrunn to center.
- 38:55Nicebrunn to the range of line.
- 38:57Feet on the left for McMillan.
- 38:59McGillan breaks wide. Feeds in front.
- 39:01Tended for Nicebrunn but he's bumped off the play.
- 39:03And Beverly picks up for those puck.
- 39:05Beverly rolls it out of the zone to Butler.
- 39:07Butler a lead now for Urban.
- 39:09Urban across the red line. Here's a slap.
- 39:11He keeps it out of the zone.
- 39:13Pick up by Centermere-Burn.
- 39:15Born from the head of Steve.
- 39:17Checked off by Leach Gillies.
- 39:19He overskates up the other way.
- 39:21Here's Kachuk picking up the loose puck.
- 39:23Kachuk cuts to the out of the line.
- 39:25But Sanderson a drop for Sanderson.
- 39:27What a save made down low by Resch.
- 39:29And he holds on with Resch here in front.
- 39:31Resch. Hey, Mom, that was...
- 39:33It's you, Tommy.
- 39:35It's catchy.
- 39:37Gwen Resch looks sharp here in the first period.
- 39:39Good back checking by Billy Fairburn.
- 39:41Starting that play.
- 39:43Coming back, breaking out.
- 39:45Kachuk picking it up and the Rangers going in for that attempt.
- 39:472.13 left.
- 39:49First period.
- 39:51Rangers and Adidas scoreless.
- 39:53Off the face. Marat at the left point with a shot that falls short.
- 39:55Gillies clears it out of the zone.
- 39:57Picked up by Harris. Getting one on two.
- 39:59Hit check off the puck by Marat who breaks it up.
- 40:01Throws to center. Taken back by Harris.
- 40:03He's to the Ranger line.
- 40:05Puts on the brakes. Throws in front.
- 40:07Broken up by Marat. And he dumps it out of center.
- 40:09Played by Marshall of the Adidas.
- 40:11Ahead now for Harris. Bumped hard.
- 40:13By Marat who's all over the ice.
- 40:15Kachuk picks up and sends in.
- 40:17Left side of Resch.
- 40:19He clears to the far boards. Harris there.
- 40:21Check by Kachuk. Sends to center.
- 40:23Knocked away by the Rangers. Kachuk
- 40:25heads up back behind the Adidas.
- 40:27A minute and a half remaining in this first period.
- 40:29No score. Now Marshall
- 40:31rides it around for Lewis.
- 40:33Lewis looks to clear out of the zone and he does.
- 40:35Kachuk is there once again.
- 40:37Kachuk spins back to his blue line. Flips down to Greshman.
- 40:39Greshman cross-sides to the
- 40:41left defense to Marat. Here's Marat
- 40:43up to center. Stickhandles down to the out of the
- 40:45line. He cuts to the right side. Banks it off
- 40:47the board. Huck loose in the corner.
- 40:49And Lewis of the Adidas clears it back out to
- 40:51center ice. Kachuk slams it back in.
- 40:53But the Rangers ahead of the play.
- 40:55And offside. A minute and a half remaining
- 40:57in this first period.
- 40:59Rangers and Adidas scoreless
- 41:01in game one of their best two of three
- 41:03opening round playoff series.
- 41:05Chicago leading Boston.
- 41:07Change that around.
- 41:09Boston leading Chicago. Six-nothing
- 41:11in the second period. Boston six.
- 41:13Chicago nothing. Second period. St. Louis
- 41:15two. Pittsburgh nothing in the second.
- 41:17And Toronto and LA in a later
- 41:19start.
- 41:21Islander shoot all the way down.
- 41:23Doubly backboard behind his net. Banks
- 41:25it off the board. Kilbeck cannot control
- 41:27the tilt. Does boost to center with a minute remaining
- 41:29in the period. Here's Patel now breaking it across
- 41:31the line. Puts on the brakes. He's turned
- 41:33around by a fart. But work free by
- 41:35Joe Baer slides it to center.
- 41:37And has to chase it down by himself.
- 41:39Now goes cross-sides to Beverly. Beverly ahead
- 41:41to Vickers at the far side. Leads Patel across
- 41:43the outer line. Back past Joe Baer.
- 41:45He shoots. Deflected in the crowd.
- 41:47Back behind the net off the stick of
- 41:49Parisi.
- 41:51And we've got a cross-side.
- 41:53At the point of our first shot
- 41:55for twenty seconds.
- 41:57Remaining in the first period.
- 41:59Following this
- 42:01first period, we'll be talking with
- 42:03Ranger, Indruz, Defendant, Dale
- 42:05Rolk. Westball and
- 42:07Rutel on the face. Midway between the
- 42:09Islander draw line and blue line.
- 42:11On the draw, Westball controls
- 42:13Westball stick handles to center. Looses on
- 42:15the foot check to Vickers. Over to Park.
- 42:17Park down to the outer line. A lead for Joe Baer.
- 42:19He's ahead of the play.
- 42:21Kelly with the puck. Kelly ahead for
- 42:23Arneson. Into the face off now.
- 42:25Right on. Rebound.
- 42:27Joe Baer.
- 42:29This season. As we look
- 42:31back on it, Joe Baer coming
- 42:33up with ninety points. Ninety-seven points.
- 42:35Rutel with ninety-one. You can see when we jump down
- 42:37he's the puck. He's got Joe Baer right behind him.
- 42:39That drop pass worked off with a cut drop
- 42:41at this short pass.
- 42:43On the face now, Park shoots in across the
- 42:45Islander blue line.
- 42:47He's in the face.
- 42:49He's out of the front.
- 42:51He's off the line.
- 42:53Across the Ranger go line.
- 42:55A touch by Nick Beverly and we get a whistle
- 42:57for Isaac.
- 42:59And bring it back with thirteen seconds.
- 43:01Remaining in the first
- 43:03period. The face off.
- 43:05Circle to the left side of
- 43:07the out of the goal tender Glenn Rush.
- 43:09Rangers stay with
- 43:11Rutel as the center for Joe Baer and
- 43:13Vickers, Beverly and Park
- 43:15are back and now Greschner steps on
- 43:17replacing Beverly.
- 43:19So Park moves to the
- 43:21left defense. Greschner on the right side now.
- 43:23It'll be Westall against
- 43:25Rutel.
- 43:27Lionsman Leon Stickle
- 43:29leans in from center. It's been turned by Joe Baer.
- 43:31We get a whistle.
- 43:33Stickle saying Rutel
- 43:35is in the gap.
- 43:37Either that mob or
- 43:39I think he jumped the cut off.
- 43:41Parise is going over to talk to Harris right now.
- 43:43And Drew and Drew are coming out quicker. Face off was perfect
- 43:45right out to Joe Baer.
- 43:47On the face same spot comes to Joe Baer. Back pass
- 43:49to the porch. That's safe made.
- 43:51By Rush and he holds on.
- 43:53Well by Rush cutting off the screen
- 43:55of Pickers.
- 43:57And here's it is waiting from the net. He had the position
- 43:59to shot to the glove side. Steve
- 44:01on the stick side.
- 44:03Put out his stick right there.
- 44:05And worried about that stick.
- 44:07On the face comes to Joe Baer. Fans on the shot
- 44:09on the slot. Picked off by Drew and he's up
- 44:11to center. Goes over the slap. Jumping glove
- 44:13save made by Chalkiner.
- 44:15And he twists it around the ball. Drew unable to
- 44:17hold on at the buzzer. That's the end.
- 44:19Of the first
- 44:21period. A well played
- 44:23first period of hockey. The score
- 44:25after one. The New
- 44:27York Rangers won.
- 44:29The New York Rangers nothing. And the
- 44:31New York title does nothing.

- 48:04In just a moment, right here, let's pause for this,
- 48:07from Schaeffer.
- 48:07["Shaper is a One Beer to Have"]
- 48:10Schaeffer is a one beer to have.
- 48:15Now here's a word from the number one beer in New York.
- 48:21Hey Schaeffer, here's a one beer to have
- 48:25when you're having more than one.
- 48:29New York is full of landmarks.
- 48:31Battery, Washington Square, Shea Stadium,
- 48:34and over on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn,
- 48:35there's another landmark, the Schaeffer Brewery.
- 48:38Since 1842, there's always been a Schaeffer Brewery
- 48:41in New York.
- 48:42Because New York has always liked Schaeffer's way,
- 48:45tasting first beer hood, beer after beer, year after year.
- 48:49Schaeffer's a beer born and brewed right here in New York.
- 48:52It's New York's number one beer.
- 48:54["Shaper is a One Beer to Have"]
- 49:08The F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 49:12Where between periods one and two at Madison Square Garden,
- 49:15Rangers at out of this meeting and game,
- 49:16where the best of three playoff series,
- 49:20Rangers and Out of This are students at the end of one.
- 49:24And let's do the sound.
- 49:26Thank you, Marvin.
- 49:27My guests, all between the first and second part,
- 49:29Rangers, the freshman, Darrell Alford,
- 49:31and I'm the fan of the pregame show, Darrell.
- 49:35Everybody around here just rushing in the mover
- 49:37and come up those steps.
- 49:38And there's only about five or six steps,
- 49:39but you have the clutches,
- 49:42an injury that I'm sure all these fans remember.
- 49:45One of the most serious ones that I've ever seen
- 49:47looking from the stands or down on the ice,
- 49:50your foot was at a complete right angle from your leg.
- 49:54And we knew then right at that moment,
- 49:57you had a broken ankle.
- 49:58A broken ankle and the expression on your face,
- 50:02I have to say that was the most painful injury
- 50:03you've ever received playing hockey.
- 50:05Yes, it was, Sal.
- 50:09As far as describing the pain, it was,
- 50:11well, you can't describe it.
- 50:13It was just, it was unbearable.
- 50:15And as far as the accident, it was a very freakish thing.
- 50:19I've never seen it before.
- 50:20I hope I never see it again.
- 50:22I don't know if I hit something on the ice.
- 50:24I would have to assume the ice gave
- 50:25or I hit a crack in the ice.
- 50:28And I just hit the boards full speed
- 50:30or pretty well full speed.
- 50:31And as I hit it, I felt the ankle go.
- 50:35I heard the snap, could feel it all through my body.
- 50:37And it was just one of those things.
- 50:40That's a terrible thing,
- 50:41but I think it could be avoided.
- 50:44You fall into the, you do, you've many times, I know,
- 50:47of skating, maybe not at full speed.
- 50:49That time you were really going full kilter.
- 50:51You had made the turn completely around the net
- 50:53from the left side of the ice around, behind the net,
- 50:56going up the right side of the ice, of course,
- 50:57as you were going into the offensive zone,
- 50:59but you were coming back out.
- 51:01And you've gone into the boards many times before.
- 51:03And I think you have a certain reaction
- 51:05that you would do when you're prepared for it,
- 51:07a certain way to go into the boards
- 51:09in a situation like that.
- 51:10I don't think you had the time to prepare for that one.
- 51:12No, I didn't, Sal.
- 51:13It happened so quick.
- 51:15Usually you can feel yourself going
- 51:17and you can react a little bit.
- 51:18You know, they're kind of break the fall a little bit
- 51:21or as you hit the boards, you're coming back up.
- 51:24But this happened so quick.
- 51:25I hit the boards full force.
- 51:26And like I said before, the ankle snapped.
- 51:29I could feel it go.
- 51:31I heard it go.
- 51:32And when I finally got my senses more or less
- 51:37when I was lying on the ice,
- 51:39I could see the foot was at one angle
- 51:41and the leg was at the complete opposite angle.
- 51:44And then I knew, well, actually I knew before it happened
- 51:48that it was a very serious thing.
- 51:50Now, you yourself have had examinations again.
- 51:55What actually happened as far as that?
- 51:57What is the medical report right up to this moment?
- 52:01Well, yesterday I had the cast taken off.
- 52:04The medical report is the break.
- 52:07Like I broke the bone in my leg.
- 52:08My leg was broken also.
- 52:10It is not healed.
- 52:11Where the bone come through the ankle,
- 52:14it's not healed completely yet.
- 52:16So it'll just be a matter of time.
- 52:19And I'm getting a brace fitted.
- 52:20It's like a polio brace.
- 52:21You get an Oxford shoe and you
- 52:25you rivet the brace through the shoe.
- 52:27So the ankle will not go either way.
- 52:30Twist.
- 52:32It'll just be a matter of a month or two months
- 52:34or whatever until the ankle gets strong.
- 52:36If it's gonna heal right,
- 52:37then the break in the leg heals right.
- 52:39Plus there was another crack in the other side of the bone
- 52:42of the leg bone.
- 52:44It's just a combination of a lot of things
- 52:46and a lot of time.
- 52:47And I just hope God willing everything's fine.
- 52:51We certainly hope so.
- 52:53We hope to see you Dale skating again.
- 52:55That's for sure.
- 52:56Next training camp.
- 52:57Dale getting into the hockey game.
- 52:59Islanders and Rangers.
- 53:01That first period I saw it as a couple of gambles
- 53:05that I noticed a couple of the defensemen taking
- 53:08a couple of the forwards even taking them.
- 53:10But Dale yourself, I don't think,
- 53:11well you may have played in the two out of three series
- 53:14say in the American league.
- 53:15I know National Hockey League hasn't seen
- 53:17a two out of three series since the early forties.
- 53:20Do you think this puts a greater amount
- 53:22of pressure on the players?
- 53:23No, I don't think so.
- 53:24As far as pressure goes in the playoffs,
- 53:27speaking personally to myself,
- 53:30I just love playoffs.
- 53:31I always seem to play my best hockey in playoffs.
- 53:35I enjoy playoffs.
- 53:36Whether it's the money or what,
- 53:39because we all love money or the pride,
- 53:41the prestige or what, I don't know.
- 53:43But as far as pressure,
- 53:45I don't think there is that much pressure.
- 53:47You know, unless, I don't know, maybe I'm different.
- 53:50I've talked to myself a lot.
- 53:53Which maybe.
- 53:54Now you get rid of it.
- 53:55Yeah right, I don't know.
- 53:56What do you say?
- 53:57I ask myself a lot of questions.
- 53:59Oh, how about this guy?
- 54:01How come this guy's doing this to me?
- 54:03This guy's taking money out of my pocket, why?
- 54:05You know, and then over the season,
- 54:08you know, he asks himself a few questions,
- 54:10but during the playoffs,
- 54:11he really asks himself a lot of questions
- 54:14and why is this happening and why let's make this happen.
- 54:18And I think if you really talk to yourself,
- 54:20there's no pressure.
- 54:22I have to think about that one, you know.
- 54:24When I do it at the other pressure situations outside
- 54:26of ice, I have to think about that one.
- 54:27I'll talk to myself for a little bit.
- 54:29You know, another thing, this series ranges Islanders.
- 54:33My point of view, Islanders are new clubs.
- 54:35Third year in the league, they made their playoffs.
- 54:37Ranges the established club and of course,
- 54:40getting a lot of flack from the fans in the past
- 54:42in nine years, no Stanley Cup,
- 54:43nine straight years in the playoff.
- 54:45Do you think that is an advantage
- 54:47to the Islanders coming in here?
- 54:48Well, the Islanders lose well, they're a new club.
- 54:50They expect it to lose, but if the Rangers should lose,
- 54:52a lot more can be said.
- 54:55Well, that's very true.
- 54:56As far as losing the Islanders, I don't think we will,
- 55:00but if they happen to beat us,
- 55:01it's a very good pat on the back for them.
- 55:04But like I said, I don't think they're going to beat us.
- 55:07And people expect a lot from us
- 55:09because we're an established club.
- 55:11We have the depth, we have the goal-tenning,
- 55:13we've got everything.
- 55:14So, but we never win that seventh game.
- 55:17So who knows?
- 55:19Well, the seventh game, a one goal decision last year,
- 55:22it wasn't the finals, it was the semifinals.
- 55:25And that's such a fine line when you really get down
- 55:28and what people say, well, you lost four out of seven.
- 55:30And I'm not saying this as an alibi,
- 55:32but when you go out on the ice and one team's going to win
- 55:35and one team's going to lose,
- 55:36this business of choke, to me, you telling yourself
- 55:40to get rid of the pressure by, as you say,
- 55:42talking to yourself.
- 55:43I think the term choke is way out the window.
- 55:46When you have a game, you could,
- 55:49one particular instance, maybe you,
- 55:50you're not thinking about making a mistake
- 55:53while you're out there, that's for sure.
- 55:54No, definitely not.
- 55:56These people that, and there's a minority
- 55:59that says we're choking,
- 56:00we're choking, I don't think you could really call them
- 56:04true fans or whatever, whoever's saying it.
- 56:09Well, I was referring to the general term choke,
- 56:13not only to the Rangers point of view,
- 56:15but for any point of view, any player out on the ice
- 56:17in a fast game such as hockey,
- 56:18you don't have the time to think of it.
- 56:20That's true, you know, it's a very fast game.
- 56:22You're out there, you're doing your best, you want to win.
- 56:25You know, you think to yourself, you have to win.
- 56:27And if you lose in the seventh game of a quarterfinal
- 56:31or a semi-final or the finals,
- 56:33I think you can walk out of any building in the world
- 56:36with your head high and say, I've done my best.
- 56:38You know, I always think as long as you can look in the mirror
- 56:42and talk to yourself and ask yourself,
- 56:44look at your family and yourself in the mirror
- 56:47and the public, as you're walking out of the rink,
- 56:50they say, way to go, or you play the rotten or whatever,
- 56:54it's up to themselves.
- 56:55But if you can walk out with your head held high,
- 56:57I think you've done a hell of a job.
- 56:59Yeah, you're talking to yourself again.
- 57:00Are you going to use that?
- 57:02I'm a little excited for that, too.
- 57:04What do you see here in this series?
- 57:06We played one through a pretty tight checking period.
- 57:08Yeah, it was kind of a nothing period.
- 57:11They were kind of feeling each other out,
- 57:13which, you know, it's just a figure of speech.
- 57:17But I think you'll see the Rangers start to open up
- 57:20a little bit, put a little pressure on them,
- 57:22just see what these guys can take,
- 57:23you know, in the playoff situation.
- 57:26Dale, go tending to me the biggest part of a short series.
- 57:30We always say that about a seven game series.

- 1:14:27Well they went 31 minutes 49 seconds,
- 1:14:42and the Reapers have jumped in front
- 1:14:46by the score of one nothing.
- 1:14:48Steve Vickers was captain too,
- 1:14:50and we'll have to wait and see
- 1:14:52if he got a piece of it,
- 1:14:53and that's for the case
- 1:14:54many many times this season,
- 1:14:56and he or Dennis Potvin,
- 1:14:58Potvin tying up Vickers
- 1:15:00to the right of Resch,
- 1:15:01it deflected off one of those two
- 1:15:02and went in,
- 1:15:03at the winning of the face off
- 1:15:04by Rotella Gilbert,
- 1:15:05hesitated,
- 1:15:06it looked like he was going to pick up the puck,
- 1:15:07finally he just made way for Park
- 1:15:09to take the shot.
- 1:15:11Face off at center,
- 1:15:12the Rangers have scored,
- 1:15:13but all at port,
- 1:15:14first goal,
- 1:15:15we shall see how it port
- 1:15:17as this game progresses.
- 1:15:18Rangers shoot in,
- 1:15:19left side of Resch,
- 1:15:20chased down by Parisi,
- 1:15:21winds it around for West ball,
- 1:15:23a head turn,
- 1:15:24shoot to center,
- 1:15:26left side of Jankerman,
- 1:15:27Jankerman now steers it
- 1:15:28back behind the net,
- 1:15:29whipped around the board by Park,
- 1:15:31Park keeps it,
- 1:15:32takes a check from Jobar,
- 1:15:33but Park is back port,
- 1:15:34now Park comes to the near boards,
- 1:15:36jumps it back the other way from Beveley,
- 1:15:38Beveley standing back behind the Ranger goal,
- 1:15:41watched by the port checking,
- 1:15:42drew it,
- 1:15:43now Beveley starts up,
- 1:15:44here's Beveley across the Ranger line,
- 1:15:46Beveley to center,
- 1:15:47shoots in,
- 1:15:48right side of Resch,
- 1:15:49makes the stick stop,
- 1:15:50Jobar after,
- 1:15:51Resch swings it around the board,
- 1:15:53Parisi in the island is great now,
- 1:15:54a pass at center,
- 1:15:55knocked away by Ratel,
- 1:15:57recovered by Jobar,
- 1:15:58makes the turn and across the
- 1:16:00island of the line,
- 1:16:01slides it in front,
- 1:16:02Ratel cannot get to it,
- 1:16:03it's covered up by Resch,
- 1:16:04he holds on and play a stop.
- 1:16:06Steve Vickers
- 1:16:08did get a piece of that drive
- 1:16:10from the point by Brad Park,
- 1:16:11so Vickers,
- 1:16:13who had the sensational regular season,
- 1:16:16with most of his scoring coming from in front
- 1:16:20of the opposition net,
- 1:16:23coming up with 41 goals,
- 1:16:2448 assists during the course of the regular season,
- 1:16:27has come up with goal number one,
- 1:16:29right here,
- 1:16:30Clark and Ratel pick up the assists,
- 1:16:33and the Rangers lead one over another,
- 1:16:34face shot by Butler is off the mark,
- 1:16:36late behind the net by Lewis,
- 1:16:38Lewis starts up,
- 1:16:39a lead intended for Howard,
- 1:16:41goes too deep all the way down across the
- 1:16:43Ranger goal line,
- 1:16:44touched by Greschker,
- 1:16:45and we got a whistle for Ising,
- 1:16:47so they'll bring it back.
- 1:16:48The time of the goal by Vickers,
- 1:16:508-11,
- 1:16:51face off coming up now,
- 1:16:53deep and out of their ice.
- 1:16:54That shot by Jerry Butler off the face off,
- 1:16:57Stemmer winning the face off,
- 1:16:58reminded me of the one Ron Harris put in,
- 1:17:01identical play,
- 1:17:02Harris beating Bunny LaRock up in Montreal,
- 1:17:05last season this time,
- 1:17:06Jerry Butler,
- 1:17:07Mr. Cage.
- 1:17:08Off the face off,
- 1:17:09Stemkowski and St. Laurent on the draw,
- 1:17:11loose up the circle,
- 1:17:12Stemmer for the far card,
- 1:17:14in front to Butler,
- 1:17:15his drive goes wide,
- 1:17:16Butler in front of the net,
- 1:17:17and a one-on-one situation,
- 1:17:19but Chuck was off the mark,
- 1:17:20announced penalty upcoming,
- 1:17:22double penalties being called,
- 1:17:24Ted Irvin and Dave Lewis,
- 1:17:29are both going off,
- 1:17:31Wally Harris setting them both off,
- 1:17:35they were tangling in front of the net,
- 1:17:38as Butler was able to unleash that
- 1:17:40shot from in front,
- 1:17:41Jerry is very upset with himself.
- 1:17:43He's had two golden opportunities,
- 1:17:44both within the last minute,
- 1:17:46one on a face off as we just explained,
- 1:17:48and this one,
- 1:17:49Teddy Irvin and Peter Stemkowski,
- 1:17:51getting that fuck out the butler,
- 1:17:52who was all alone in front of Resch,
- 1:17:54Resch may have had enough time to just cut
- 1:17:56that angle down on him on.
- 1:17:57Number 25, the island,
- 1:17:59Dave Lewis,
- 1:18:03Dave Lewis and Ted Irvin,
- 1:18:05two minutes apiece,
- 1:18:06Lewis for high sticking,
- 1:18:11and Irvin also,
- 1:18:12for high sticking,
- 1:18:15nine to seven,
- 1:18:17time of the penalties,
- 1:18:18both clubs down a man right now,
- 1:18:19Rangers go with Stemkowski and Butler up front,
- 1:18:21Greshner on the runner,
- 1:18:22back on the face off,
- 1:18:23Greshner controls,
- 1:18:25comes back to his blue line,
- 1:18:26ahead now from the right,
- 1:18:27the right,
- 1:18:29gives off to Stemkowski,
- 1:18:30Stem at the center, shoots in,
- 1:18:32gobbled up by Resch,
- 1:18:33nearly had trouble with the bouncer,
- 1:18:35and then is able to steer it behind the net.
- 1:18:37The out of the start up,
- 1:18:38Dennis Putnam shoots it ahead now for Stewart,
- 1:18:40Stewart at center,
- 1:18:41Stewart up across the range of line,
- 1:18:43throws it in the corner,
- 1:18:44Stemkowski after it,
- 1:18:45and clears out of the zone,
- 1:18:46Butler on the right foot center,
- 1:18:48Butler now up across the out of the line,
- 1:18:50he's tied up by Hart,
- 1:18:51back pass,
- 1:18:52intercepted by Stewart,
- 1:18:53he loots the check of Greshner
- 1:18:54as he moves to center,
- 1:18:55but he's checked up high by Butler,
- 1:18:57Butler took a swing at Stewart,
- 1:19:00they glared at each other,
- 1:19:01play continues,
- 1:19:02Dennis Putnam at center,
- 1:19:04Christ the Feeder head knocked away by Kachuk,
- 1:19:06Putnam is up with it,
- 1:19:07checked by Kachuk,
- 1:19:08loses control,
- 1:19:09this has not been one of the stronger games thus far
- 1:19:11for Dennis Putnam,
- 1:19:13you hardly realize he's on the ice,
- 1:19:15now the puck is sent deep in the ranger ice,
- 1:19:17as McFiddlin and Greshner jam each other
- 1:19:20on the board,
- 1:19:21Rangers are able to clear out,
- 1:19:22here's Kachuk to the out of the line
- 1:19:23with a drive that is club saved by Gresh,
- 1:19:25undecided then decides to hold on,
- 1:19:28drops it to the ice,
- 1:19:30we saw that maneuver here on Sunday
- 1:19:33at an almost cost,
- 1:19:34Glenn Rish this time,
- 1:19:36they got the whistle from Willie Harris,
- 1:19:38and that will make for a face off
- 1:19:41in out of the ice.
- 1:19:43Final score in Pittsburgh,
- 1:19:45Pittsburgh Penguins four,
- 1:19:46St. Louis Blues three,
- 1:19:48so the Penguins spotted the Blues
- 1:19:49that two nothing lead,
- 1:19:50and for that goal scoring power that they have,
- 1:19:54were able to come from behind
- 1:19:55and win the hockey game.
- 1:19:57Boston over Chicago in the third,
- 1:19:59eight one,
- 1:20:00and Toronto and LA later on,
- 1:20:02half time in Houston,
- 1:20:04Rockets leading the next 46 to 39,
- 1:20:08face off coming up now,
- 1:20:10right side of the island of that nine 27,
- 1:20:13remaining second period,
- 1:20:15Rangers lead one nothing on the goal
- 1:20:16by Vickers from Park and Rattell
- 1:20:18at eight 11 of the second period,
- 1:20:2050 seconds remaining on the double penalties
- 1:20:22to Urban and Lewis,
- 1:20:24Dennis Potman controls the face,
- 1:20:27and starts up,
- 1:20:28clicks to the left defense,
- 1:20:29the heart spins away from Faber,
- 1:20:32and he winds it back to Potman behind the net,
- 1:20:34Kachuk all over him,
- 1:20:35Potman cuts to his left now right,
- 1:20:38splits to start up,
- 1:20:39throws it ahead,
- 1:20:39intercepted by Park at center,
- 1:20:42cross eyes to Ron Harris,
- 1:20:44now Harris passed foot up between the legs of Bourne,
- 1:20:46but Bourne knocks it aside,
- 1:20:47and Hart comes up with it,
- 1:20:49a head for Dennis Potman,
- 1:20:50sweeps around Kachuk to center,
- 1:20:52he's up to the Ranger line,
- 1:20:54now looks to start up a leap for Bourne overthrown,
- 1:20:56Bourne checked by Ron Harris,
- 1:20:58Park lies loose,
- 1:20:59Billy Harris takes his slap is wide,
- 1:21:01kept in by Dennis Potman at the point,
- 1:21:03throws to the corner to Billy Harris,
- 1:21:05he moves back behind the Ranger that,
- 1:21:06stick handles,
- 1:21:07tries to wrap it around,
- 1:21:08but it's held up the side of the net by Jokerman,
- 1:21:11held it with his right skate,
- 1:21:13and play is called,
- 1:21:15and that maneuver by Billy Harris almost clicked,
- 1:21:18try to wrap around from an impossible angle behind the net,
- 1:21:21and Jokerman was able to hold it off with his right skate.
- 1:21:24Funny type of play the way that developed,
- 1:21:26Mark Dennis Potman had the puck on the right point,
- 1:21:29and he was gonna dump it in to the right corner,
- 1:21:31up to the left of Jokerman,
- 1:21:32he did,
- 1:21:33but both Islander players are there,
- 1:21:34nobody out in front of the net to throw the puck to,
- 1:21:36when Harris picked it up,
- 1:21:38Harris had to go to the other side,
- 1:21:39Stewart remained in the corner,
- 1:21:41not going out in front of the net,
- 1:21:42and Harris is more or less,
- 1:21:44even though he tried that play,
- 1:21:45he had nobody else,
- 1:21:46he had to make that play,
- 1:21:47had nobody to pass the puck to out in front.
- 1:21:49Face off now, right side of the Ranger net,
- 1:21:51it'll be drawn,
- 1:21:53and Rotel on the draw,
- 1:21:55Rotel and Jokerman up front,
- 1:21:56Marat Greschner are back,
- 1:21:58on the face off,
- 1:21:59Rotel is up with it ahead,
- 1:22:00it goes for Jokerman, Lewis, and Irvin,
- 1:22:02return the lead for Irvin,
- 1:22:03breaking has a breakaway cut,
- 1:22:04city fake shoots,
- 1:22:05saving a beauty by Resch.
- 1:22:07Love save by Resch,
- 1:22:08stopping Irvin on the breakaway,
- 1:22:10as he stepped out of the box.
- 1:22:12Now Burt Marshall back behind the net,
- 1:22:14Rangers lead at 1-0,
- 1:22:158.15 remaining,
- 1:22:16second parry,
- 1:22:17pass for Lewis around the boards,
- 1:22:19cannot be handled,
- 1:22:20slides out to center,
- 1:22:21then Greschner backhands it in,
- 1:22:23Resch stops it behind the net,
- 1:22:25and leads for Marshall,
- 1:22:26winds it around for Lewis,
- 1:22:27ahead now for Drew,
- 1:22:28it moves to center,
- 1:22:29ahead for Parisi,
- 1:22:30knocked away,
- 1:22:31Parisi recovers at the Ranger line,
- 1:22:33loses on a poke check,
- 1:22:35and it comes to center,
- 1:22:36Lewis there,
- 1:22:36back pass now for Marshall,
- 1:22:38Marshall can't control,
- 1:22:39Rattell takes it away,
- 1:22:40Rattell up to the outer line with Joe Baer,
- 1:22:43a lead for Joe Baer,
- 1:22:44Joe Baer cannot get the shot off,
- 1:22:46stopped by Marshall,
- 1:22:47who whips it back to the near side,
- 1:22:49and ends up out of the zone
- 1:22:50on the stick of Westmore,
- 1:22:51left wing feed for Parisi,
- 1:22:53back to Westmore,
- 1:22:54across the Ranger line,
- 1:22:55intercepted by Greschner,
- 1:22:56blows it back behind the Ranger net,
- 1:22:587.5 remaining,
- 1:22:59second parry,
- 1:23:00Rangers lead 1-0 on the goal by Vickers,
- 1:23:03now Greschner starts up,
- 1:23:05Greschner moving to his left,
- 1:23:06comes off the board,
- 1:23:07and it's skipped all the way down ice,
- 1:23:09across the outer line,
- 1:23:12touch made by Marshall,
- 1:23:14and we got a whistle for icing.
- 1:23:16Here's a case of no movement,
- 1:23:17Vickers standing still at the blue line,
- 1:23:19Joe Baer standing still on the other side,
- 1:23:21Greschner had made the good defensive play,
- 1:23:23got behind the net,
- 1:23:25had nobody back to help him out
- 1:23:26as he came out with a puck,
- 1:23:27so he took the wise way out,
- 1:23:28he was gonna make a tough pass along the board,
- 1:23:30if it was a deflect on Vickers,
- 1:23:32there wouldn't be an icing,
- 1:23:33if it doesn't, an icing,
- 1:23:34but he was sort of static back there,
- 1:23:36had no place to go with the puck.
- 1:23:39Face off now,
- 1:23:40left side of Ed Jockeman,
- 1:23:42that'll be Rattelle against Drewitt,
- 1:23:46on the call,
- 1:23:49Drewitt in the center,
- 1:23:51for Westfall,
- 1:23:53and Marisi,
- 1:23:54it's sent back behind the Ranger goal line,
- 1:23:56Beverly is there,
- 1:23:57Beverly spinning on Drewitt,
- 1:23:58ahead now for Rattelle,
- 1:24:00Rattelle is up in the center,
- 1:24:01left wing pass for Vickers,
- 1:24:02knocked away,
- 1:24:03comes back to center,
- 1:24:04Rattelle takes,
- 1:24:05Rattelle ahead for Vickers,
- 1:24:06and across the out of the line,
- 1:24:07as Rattelle is pushed off the puck,
- 1:24:09and ends up on the ice,
- 1:24:10Drewitt takes it back and shoots in,
- 1:24:12a rule that is doubled up by Jockeman,
- 1:24:14leaves it for Beverly,
- 1:24:15who winds it around the boards,
- 1:24:17pass too deep,
- 1:24:18Lewis intercepts,
- 1:24:19loses on a stick,
- 1:24:20check to Rattelle,
- 1:24:21ahead now, Joe Baer,
- 1:24:22back pass for Beverly,
- 1:24:23and the Rangers start up,
- 1:24:24Beverly to center ice,
- 1:24:25and then loops one in,
- 1:24:26looks to the left by Rich,
- 1:24:28puts it on the ice,
- 1:24:29and swings it around the boards to Parisi,
- 1:24:31goes cross ice for Westball,
- 1:24:33and the tempo of this game has slowed down,
- 1:24:35after the furious start,
- 1:24:37in the first period,
- 1:24:38now Westball to the red line,
- 1:24:39shoots in,
- 1:24:40back behind the net,
- 1:24:41Jockeman makes the stick stop,
- 1:24:43and leaves for Joe Baer,
- 1:24:44Hylander's change out of the move,
- 1:24:46as Joe Baer starts up,
- 1:24:476'20 remaining,
- 1:24:48second period,
- 1:24:49Joe Baer jumps in,
- 1:24:50left side of the out of the net,
- 1:24:52Resch stops it,
- 1:24:53Rangers change out the goal,
- 1:24:54Resch dumps it back behind,
- 1:24:55it's that down for Heading,
- 1:24:57Heading out of the out of the zone,
- 1:24:59checked by Stemkowski,
- 1:25:00Heading moves up to center,
- 1:25:02and loses on a stick check to Irvin,
- 1:25:04a back pass for Park,
- 1:25:05Park spinning in his own head,
- 1:25:06away from Heading,
- 1:25:07comes to the near board,
- 1:25:09now Park comes back the other way,
- 1:25:11Heading all over,
- 1:25:12Park moves back behind his net,
- 1:25:14Heading looks to follow up there,
- 1:25:15Park standing behind the net,
- 1:25:17leaves for Stemkowski,
- 1:25:18Stemmer starts up on the right board,
- 1:25:20throws it out to center,
- 1:25:21but it's taken by Heading,
- 1:25:22loses on a stick check to Beverly,
- 1:25:24Beverly fires to the out of the line,
- 1:25:25but it's an easy intercept for Park,
- 1:25:27Parms ahead for McMillan,
- 1:25:28modeled up by Park Butler,
- 1:25:30takes it away,
- 1:25:31ahead to Stemkowski at center,
- 1:25:32and he shoots it to the out of the line,
- 1:25:34intercepted by John Putman,
- 1:25:36Putman on the rush to the range of line,
- 1:25:37loses control,
- 1:25:38Irvin moves after to McConaugh,
- 1:25:40along with Putman,
- 1:25:41they combine to freeze him,
- 1:25:43and play is gone.
- 1:25:45Well, now that there's a break in the action,
- 1:25:46a good time to remind you about new
- 1:25:49Ultrabad Super Dry Anti-Perspirant,
- 1:25:52Ultrabad Super Dry not only sprays on really dry,
- 1:25:55it's also more effective in helping stop wetness.
- 1:25:58That's right, tests have shown that Ultrabad Super Dry
- 1:26:01will help stop wetness better than Lake Yard,
- 1:26:04are an extra dry, soft and dry, and dial.
- 1:26:07They're all good,
- 1:26:08but tests have shown new Ultrabad Super Dry is better.
- 1:26:11So why not try an anti-perspirant
- 1:26:13that is more effective in helping you stay dry.
- 1:26:15New Ultrabad Super Dry on the face-off,
- 1:26:19jammed on the corner,
- 1:26:20work free now by Beverly,
- 1:26:22winds it around,
- 1:26:23Park flags it down from the point,
- 1:26:25looks to set up,
- 1:26:26gives off to Howitt,
- 1:26:27Howitt at the far board,
- 1:26:28throws in front,
- 1:26:29broken up by Beverly,
- 1:26:29can't clear out,
- 1:26:30Potman keeps in,
- 1:26:31into the corner to Meisgram,
- 1:26:32Meisgram with a shot,
- 1:26:33stick to side by Chokovet,
- 1:26:35with much traffic in front,
- 1:26:36and then Fairburn sends ahead to Cachuk.
- 1:26:38A lead at center,
- 1:26:39Sanderson fakes the slap,
- 1:26:41and Dennis Potman sticks,
- 1:26:42checks it away.
- 1:26:43Here's Potman back to center,
- 1:26:44Potman up to the range line,
- 1:26:46fade on the right for Meisgram,
- 1:26:48breaks in back behind the goal line,
- 1:26:49throws out now to the far post,
- 1:26:51the Potman, a shot goes wide out of the flexion,
- 1:26:53chased down by Saint Laurent,
- 1:26:55knocked away by Sanderson,
- 1:26:56Cachuk after it behind the range,
- 1:26:58and he's turned around by Meisgram,
- 1:26:59but he's able to wind it around the boards,
- 1:27:01and Fairburn,
- 1:27:01shoots it out of the zone,
- 1:27:02Howitt back board over,
- 1:27:03skates forward,
- 1:27:04takes a lead,
- 1:27:05Sanderson is in across,
- 1:27:06the out of the line,
- 1:27:07cuts in,
- 1:27:07he's dragged out from behind,
- 1:27:08and a penalty is called.
- 1:27:09Penalty upcoming against the Outlanders,
- 1:27:11as the puck is bent in,
- 1:27:13back behind the out of the net,
- 1:27:15Sanderson,
- 1:27:16on a beautiful break led by Fairburn,
- 1:27:20and a penalty upcoming,
- 1:27:21it is a flipping call,
- 1:27:23against Dennis Potman.
- 1:27:25Potman did what he had to do,
- 1:27:27Sanderson had only a backhand opportunity,
- 1:27:29no opportunity at all to deke on the play,
- 1:27:32had to take the backhand shot,
- 1:27:33rush came out,
- 1:27:35Potman got his stick on,
- 1:27:36Sanderson skates and just pushed,
- 1:27:38Derrick going down,
- 1:27:39and referee Wally Harris calling the play,
- 1:27:41good pass by Billy Fairburn,
- 1:27:43a short pass,
- 1:27:44just enough for him to beat Jerry Harden,
- 1:27:47go in on that break.
- 1:27:4815, 9, 15, 27.
- 1:27:5215, 27,
- 1:27:54the time of a trip by Dennis Potman,
- 1:27:57and so,
- 1:27:58the Rangers have the man advantage,
- 1:28:00they lead it by the score of 1-0.
- 1:28:02Derrick Sanderson just skating over to the bench,
- 1:28:04Neymar Francis said that should have been a penalty shot,
- 1:28:07I have to disagree, Ma,
- 1:28:08he did not have a complete break away,
- 1:28:11he could not make any other move,
- 1:28:12but shoot from where he was,
- 1:28:14if you have a break away,
- 1:28:15you can deke,
- 1:28:15you can shoot,
- 1:28:16you have both sides of the net,
- 1:28:18to shoot at,
- 1:28:18that time he was just there carrying a buck on his backhand,
- 1:28:21didn't have enough time to even put it on his forehead.
- 1:28:25Rangers continue a mild argument,
- 1:28:28with referee Wally Harris now,
- 1:28:29assistant captain Rod Jopper,
- 1:28:32comes over,
- 1:28:34Rangers claiming that it should have been a penalty shot,
- 1:28:38and I have to agree with you, South,
- 1:28:42nothing clear cut about that,
- 1:28:44and I must say also,
- 1:28:46that was a true trip on Sanderson,
- 1:28:49no swan dive,
- 1:28:49off the face Brechner from the right,
- 1:28:51makes the slap,
- 1:28:52now shoots,
- 1:28:53it goes wide on a screened out Brech,
- 1:28:55Vickers with the rebound in the corner,
- 1:28:57winds it behind the net for Joba,
- 1:28:58in front Rattelle,
- 1:28:59broken up nicely by Lewis,
- 1:29:00but kept alive by Park,
- 1:29:01Park comes to the corner,
- 1:29:02Vickers takes it back,
- 1:29:03Park spinning in the corner,
- 1:29:04Park looks to set up,
- 1:29:05now Park throws it along the board,
- 1:29:07whistle on the play,
- 1:29:08pushing and shoving in front of the net,
- 1:29:10with Lewis and Joba getting involved,
- 1:29:12and a penalty upcoming.
- 1:29:13I think they're both going off, both for slashing,
- 1:29:16Lewis trying to keep Joba out from the front of the net,
- 1:29:19later stick on Joba,
- 1:29:21Joba taking exception,
- 1:29:22and striking back.
- 1:29:25The discussion continues,
- 1:29:27but Wally Harris is indicating a double penalty is upcoming,
- 1:29:32right here, let's pause for station identification.
- 1:29:35This is WNEW in New York,
- 1:29:37and this is Gene Clavenham,
- 1:29:38I'm on every morning folks from 5.30 to 10,
- 1:29:41is this a game?
- 1:29:42Have you heard my show?
- 1:29:44Is that a show?
- 1:29:45This is Mark Albert with Sal Messina
- 1:29:47from Madison Square Garden in New York.
- 1:29:51SRO crowd here at the garden for game one
- 1:29:55of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
- 1:29:57Here's the announcement on the penalty, slashing.
- 1:30:01On both,
- 1:30:03Roger Baer and Glenn Resch,
- 1:30:06the coltender Resch is hit with the slash,
- 1:30:08and then Lewis came over,
- 1:30:10at first it appeared that Harris was handing out the penalty
- 1:30:14to the defenseman Lewis,
- 1:30:15but it is Resch who got involved with Joba,
- 1:30:19and so the auditors will send someone over to the penalty
- 1:30:21box to serve that Resch slash.
- 1:30:24Time of the penalty is 15.45.
- 1:30:27And Bob, that'll set up the four on three situation still
- 1:30:29for a minute and 42 seconds.
- 1:30:32One inning, who was out on the ice on that opportunity,
- 1:30:35has to serve that penalty,
- 1:30:37one of the players who are on the ice
- 1:30:38at the time of the infraction will go out,
- 1:30:40heading going out to join Dennis Pottson.
- 1:30:42So the Rangers for a minute and 42 seconds
- 1:30:44will have a four on three situation.
- 1:30:48Face off coming up midway between
- 1:30:51the island of Lulana, Lulana,
- 1:30:53it'll be a west ball and Rattell on the draw,
- 1:30:56controlled by the Rangers,
- 1:30:57Mark holds it up for that point,
- 1:30:59looks to set up cross-ice,
- 1:31:01blood, Harris, he shoots it,
- 1:31:02his block comes in front,
- 1:31:03Rattell bats at it, it goes wide,
- 1:31:05West ball comes away with the loose block
- 1:31:07for the outlanders, goes along the boards,
- 1:31:09looks to clear and succeeds,
- 1:31:11shoots it all the way down.
- 1:31:12Rangers have the man advantage
- 1:31:14in a four on three skating situation.
- 1:31:17Ron Harris back behind the Ranger net,
- 1:31:19Rangers lead it one nothing as Harris starts up,
- 1:31:21moving right to left, Harris to center,
- 1:31:24Harris moving on west ball across the out of the line
- 1:31:26that jumps in, left side of rest,
- 1:31:28Marshall back forward, whips it around the boards,
- 1:31:30comes back the other way,
- 1:31:31took a tricky hop, Rattell able to keep in,
- 1:31:33out to the point to Ron Harris,
- 1:31:35cross-ice, blocked from the left side,
- 1:31:36flips it from the vicar but it's broken up,
- 1:31:39Harris gets it alive, he shoots,
- 1:31:40he falls down as it's knocked away by Marshall,
- 1:31:43and west ball takes the loose block
- 1:31:44and carries it out to center,
- 1:31:46he's tied up by Park along the boards at the far side,
- 1:31:49have that stop to play, Park not allowing
- 1:31:52west ball to clear up the rest of the ice.
- 1:31:54Two good saves by the islander defense,
- 1:31:56the first by Dave Lewis who just made a kick save
- 1:31:59right in front of Glenn Rush on park shot,
- 1:32:01and then Burt Marshall able to stop Ronnie Harris's shot
- 1:32:04as all three islanders had drifted over to that side
- 1:32:07of the ice and if Ronnie would have made a pass,
- 1:32:10the other side of the ice is all Rangers.
- 1:32:13Rangers remain with Bertell and Vickers up front,
- 1:32:15Harris and Parker back.
- 1:32:2050 seconds remaining on the Dennis Puntman penalty
- 1:32:23for Hanford on Harris as he leaves,
- 1:32:25Breschner steps on, and a minute eight on those
- 1:32:28double penalties to Joe Baer and Glenn Rush.
- 1:32:33A wrap by two halfs.
- 1:32:34Hanford serving the rest penalty incidentally,
- 1:32:36on the face, Park shoots it all the way down
- 1:32:39for the islanders, back behind the Ranger goal line,
- 1:32:42Park is after it, now Park starts up,
- 1:32:44Rangers half an advantage, Park to center,
- 1:32:46Park is up across the islander line,
- 1:32:48Park cuts to the near side,
- 1:32:50has Vickers out deep wide open,
- 1:32:52a pass to Vickers up and up one,
- 1:32:53north side, Breschner, Breschner back to Vickers,
- 1:32:55he goes in with a drive, save off the cover,
- 1:32:57Breschner on the rebound, Breschner keeps it
- 1:33:00on the right ball, he lines it up,
- 1:33:01a shot shoot back to Park and Vickers at the near corner,
- 1:33:04now Park sets up, gets to Vickers in the corner,
- 1:33:06Vickers moves in, back the other way,
- 1:33:07Breschner, out the park, straight away shot,
- 1:33:09he shoots, blocked beautifully by a diving marshal,
- 1:33:12and Westphal clears it all the way down.
- 1:33:15Bird marshal with that block,
- 1:33:17on the straight on shot by Brad Park,
- 1:33:19here's Breschner out of the zone,
- 1:33:20but Dennis Puntman returns for the ice,
- 1:33:22Breschner tied up by Marisi,
- 1:33:24goes in across the out of the line,
- 1:33:25back pass, Baerberg, Baerberg cross-ice to Park,
- 1:33:27Park shoots, it is reflected wide,
- 1:33:29on the rebound, it's far about the far corner,
- 1:33:31Baerberg is hemmed in, Park is held against the boards,
- 1:33:34Park pushes it along the boards,
- 1:33:36and then it's frozen, just stopped play.
- 1:33:38Five seconds remaining on the double penalties,
- 1:33:41right now both clubs are four skaters apiece.
- 1:33:44Face-off coming up from the left side of the highlander net,
- 1:33:47we have 2.20 left in this first period,
- 1:33:50and the Rangers lead it 1-0 on the goal by Steve Vickers,
- 1:33:53assisted by Brad Park and John Ratel
- 1:33:56at 8.11 of the second period.
- 1:33:58And with that whistle, Glenn Resch came out,
- 1:34:01and patted Burt Marshall on the backside,
- 1:34:04saying way to go, and what a job Burt Marshall did
- 1:34:06on that particular power play by the Rangers,
- 1:34:09he stopped two good shots, and the last one,
- 1:34:12the Rangers throwing the puck around beautifully,
- 1:34:13Greschner finally getting it back to Park,
- 1:34:16and a beautiful sprawling save by Burt Marshall
- 1:34:19to keep that puck from penetrating.
- 1:34:20Face-off now, left side of Resch,
- 1:34:23that'll be Kachuk and Druid on the draw.
- 1:34:28On the face-off, it's sent back behind the,
- 1:34:31out of the net, Hart after it, Hart flops it now for Druid,
- 1:34:35Druid winds it around the board, Marat after,
- 1:34:37shoots back in behind, Resch makes the stick stop,
- 1:34:40Gilberto, and heading return now,
- 1:34:42both clubs, five skaters aside,
- 1:34:44Druid takes it in front of his own net,
- 1:34:46clears it ahead now for Dennis Potman,
- 1:34:48and Potman shoots it out to center.
- 1:34:50Parisi can't handle it, Faberant bats it away
- 1:34:52over to Sanderson, he cuts it up,
- 1:34:53up in the backhand, it was wide.
- 1:34:55Beautiful move by Sanderson, but a shot went wide.
- 1:34:58Now here's Druid up to center for the honor
- 1:35:00that's moving on the route, takes the slap
- 1:35:01at the range of iron, then loses possession,
- 1:35:03and Greschner takes, spins back behind his goal line,
- 1:35:06winds it around the board, Dennis Potman keeps in,
- 1:35:08dumps it in the corner for McMillan,
- 1:35:09back behind the goal line, Parisi back in front,
- 1:35:1110-4 McMillan, intercepted by Sanderson,
- 1:35:14a hit, Faberant at center, he is one-on-two,
- 1:35:16Faberant shoots in, a high shot blowed at the crossbar,
- 1:35:19by Gresch, puts on the stick of the defenseman, Jerry Hart,
- 1:35:22Hart spinning back behind his net, watch by Cachut,
- 1:35:25rolls it around, out of the stick of Druid.
- 1:35:27Here's Druid up to center for the honor that's moving
- 1:35:30on the crisscross with McMillan,
- 1:35:31takes a hip check from the route as he shoots in,
- 1:35:33and Sanderson slaps it back the other way,
- 1:35:35it carries all the way down across the honor
- 1:35:37of their goal line, the touch by Dennis Potman,
- 1:35:41and that bumps the whistle, more icing,
- 1:35:43so they'll bring it back down for a face-off.
- 1:35:45They have now changed the scoring on that ranger goal.
- 1:35:47It is Brad Park's goal from Rotel at 8-11,
- 1:35:52originally called Vickers on a deflection from in front.
- 1:35:55Apparently they looked at the replay,
- 1:35:58and determined that it was a Park slap shot all the way,
- 1:36:02and Vickers did not get a face of it.
- 1:36:04Rotel, they assist 8-11, Rangers lead 1-0,
- 1:36:07face-off, deepened, Ranger-Ice controlled again
- 1:36:09by the Rangers, Urban is hauled down,
- 1:36:11he and Howitt entangled with their skates,
- 1:36:14and the fans here looking for a penalty,
- 1:36:16no penalty called, Howitt also went down.
- 1:36:19Park takes, moves back behind his net,
- 1:36:21watched by the fore-checking Howitt,
- 1:36:23now Park starts up, but Meistrup fore-checking well,
- 1:36:25and Park has to move back behind his net.
- 1:36:28Park looking ahead, now Park starts up around Meistrup,
- 1:36:32here's Park with 40 seconds remaining in the period,
- 1:36:34moving up to center, a hit for Bemily,
- 1:36:35has an opening on the right side,
- 1:36:36beyond on the line, a slap is won,
- 1:36:38on the rebound, Stokowski shoots, score!
- 1:36:40And, off the line, the first pitch for Stokowski,
- 1:36:53who has had many a great playoff series,
- 1:36:58starting right here in game number one,
- 1:37:01with the tough angle shots, and 30 feet out,
- 1:37:03right side of Resh, feet over the shoulder,
- 1:37:06and the Rangers lead it 2-0.
- 1:37:08Complete breakdown by the Islanders,
- 1:37:10everybody going to the left side of the ice
- 1:37:12as the Rangers came in, and Bemily was able
- 1:37:14to go down to the right side to take the first shot,
- 1:37:17Resh even was slow as the puck bounced off the boards,
- 1:37:19and Stemmer, right on the puck,
- 1:37:21Resh coming over to this side of the net,
- 1:37:24Stemkowski shot it to where Resh was coming from,
- 1:37:26no way Resh could react,
- 1:37:28a perfect shot right inside the post.
- 1:37:31Final to go, 19-25 on the face-off,
- 1:37:34controlled by Lewis, to the out of the shirts ahead,
- 1:37:37some of the crowd, and players call.
- 1:37:40Bemily and Park, the assist for Pete Stemkowski.
- 1:37:45Well, there's one for the,
- 1:37:48two member of the Stemkowski family,
- 1:37:49I know Gail Stemkowski's taking it all in, on WNAW.
- 1:37:55Gail and Peter celebrating the birth of a girl
- 1:37:59just a couple of days ago, on the face,
- 1:38:00Stemkowski, control, shoots in,
- 1:38:03right side of Resh, time running down here,
- 1:38:05in this second period, Rangers lead it to nothing,
- 1:38:09Idle is clear out of the zone, Howard takes it center,
- 1:38:12moves to the Ranger line, and that shoots in,
- 1:38:14right side of the net, Park after,
- 1:38:16then a scramble of Howard, Meistrum works free,
- 1:38:19Irvin is over there, time runs out,
- 1:38:20Irvin passing around the middle,
- 1:38:22it's against the end of the second period.
- 1:38:25A score after two, the New York Rangers two,
- 1:38:30and the New York Islanders nothing.
- 1:38:32We'll be back in a moment,
- 1:38:33and Sal will be talking with one of my all time
- 1:38:38favorite New York Rangers from years gone by,
- 1:38:43a Ranger in the early 60s, Wild Bill Ezenicki.
- 1:38:49Don't play him on the golf course, Sal.
- 1:38:51No, I understand, he is a golf pro,
- 1:38:53I'll have to ask him about that,
- 1:38:54but Wild Bill Ezenicki was a man
- 1:38:56who loved to throw his body around,
- 1:38:58and you know, the big whistle, Chadwick said to me,
- 1:39:00as Nicky was a rough tough guy,
- 1:39:01but he never got a high sticking penalty.
- 1:39:04I asked Bill, you have that good a memory,
- 1:39:06you never gave him a high sticking penalty,
- 1:39:07we're gonna have to ask Ezenicki about that.
- 1:39:09All right, Wild Bill Ezenicki will be our guest
- 1:39:12just a moment or two, right here,
- 1:39:13let's pause for this, from manufacturer Sal.
- 1:39:17I'm walking through what used to be a busy bank,
- 1:39:20now it's filled only with the ghosts of people
- 1:39:22who used to bank here.
- 1:39:23Sorry, it's after three, we're closed.
- 1:39:27Margaret Martin used to spend her lunch hours here
- 1:39:29standing in line, but she's disappeared.
- 1:39:31She banks at Manufacturer's Hanoi now,
- 1:39:34where many branches open early and close late,
- 1:39:36so she can spend her lunch hour after lunch.
- 1:39:39Next.
- 1:39:40David Bell is a accountant, used to stand in line
- 1:39:42for 10 minutes to make a simple deposit,
- 1:39:45he's disappeared too.
- 1:39:46Now he makes deposits in 10 seconds
- 1:39:48in a quick time deposit box at Manufacturer's Hanoi.
- 1:39:52Sorry, you know how to get into offices
- 1:39:54with a problem.
- 1:39:56I don't know why the secretary got sick and tired
- 1:39:59of being given a hard time every time
- 1:40:00she wanted to cash a check at another branch.
- 1:40:03She too has disappeared.
- 1:40:05All the while she can cash her check at any branch.
- 1:40:08Now she gets hard cash instead of a hard time.
- 1:40:11A lot of people are going to Manufacturer's Hanoi
- 1:40:14because they're doing a lot of things
- 1:40:15to make banking the way you want it to be.
- 1:40:18Remember, D.S.C.
- 1:40:20In the second period, the Rangers out-shopped
- 1:40:22the islanders 14-7 for an overall 24-15 edge
- 1:40:27over the first 10 minutes.
- 1:40:29No scoring in the first, in the second,
- 1:40:31it was Martin on a slap, assisted by Rotel at 8-11.
- 1:40:36And then Stumkowski from Beverly and Martin at 19-25,
- 1:40:43giving the Rangers the two-nothing lead right here
- 1:40:46after two.
- 1:40:47Penalties in the second, Irvin and Lewis together
- 1:40:49for high-sticking at 9-27.
- 1:40:52Dennis Pontven for a trip at 15-27,
- 1:40:55then Resch, the goaltender, and Gilbert got involved
- 1:40:57in the front of the net, and they were both called
- 1:41:00for slashing at 15-45, giving the Rangers a four-on-three
- 1:41:04skating advantage.
- 1:41:05Resch is penalty served by Lauren Heading.
- 1:41:09Two-to-nothing to score at the end of two,
- 1:41:11the Rangers on top.
- 1:41:13Elsewhere on the national hockey league,
- 1:41:14Boston over Chicago, 8-1 in the third,
- 1:41:17Pittsburgh came from behind and beat the St. Louis Blues
- 1:41:204-3, St. Louis chopping off to that two-nothing lead,
- 1:41:24but the Penguins just awesome at home this season,
- 1:41:28able to come back and pull out the victory
- 1:41:31by the count of 4-3.

- 1:42:45we will be there to bring you all the action.
- 1:42:47Rangers and Idlers continue at the Nassau Coliseum
- 1:42:50Thursday night,
- 1:42:51if there is a game three,
- 1:42:52they will play it here at the garden on Friday night,
- 1:42:55and you will hear it on WNAW starting same time,
- 1:42:5810 minutes before nine with South and the pregame show.
- 1:43:01Right here we're two complete,
- 1:43:03and the Rangers are on second period goals
- 1:43:06by Brad Park and Pete Stamkowski,
- 1:43:08lead the Idlers two to nothing.
- 1:43:10I see Wild Bill is all set, here's South.
- 1:43:14Wild Bill doesn't look as wild as when I saw him
- 1:43:16play with a blue shirt on here back,
- 1:43:18I don't even remember the year Mom did,
- 1:43:20I think it was the early 60s though
- 1:43:21when you were with the Rangers or was it the late 50s?
- 1:43:23Oh, it was the late 50s, yeah.
- 1:43:26Mostly with Toronto and Boston,
- 1:43:29but it's nice being in the new ring,
- 1:43:32the facilities are great,
- 1:43:33but as we were saying, talking to each other earlier,
- 1:43:36we missed the homie feeling of the old Madison Square Garden.
- 1:43:41So I've gotten accustomed to it now,
- 1:43:42I think we're here about seven years,
- 1:43:44and even though I never played in the old ring, of course,
- 1:43:47I watched games there,
- 1:43:49and that had a tremendous flavor about it.
- 1:43:52This ring to me has developed
- 1:43:53some sort of a homie feeling to me,
- 1:43:55I know it's your first trip here,
- 1:43:57as you said, the different dimensions have a bearing
- 1:44:01on things too, the ice surface.
- 1:44:02Yes, the end zones were smaller,
- 1:44:06and it favors the big men on defense.
- 1:44:10As we were saying,
- 1:44:10the defensemen are much better skaters today,
- 1:44:14they maneuver, they have greater maneuverability.
- 1:44:18I don't know what the penalty box is like though,
- 1:44:20I haven't seen that for a while,
- 1:44:21but it looks kinda classy.
- 1:44:23Well, you spent a lot of time in penalty boxes,
- 1:44:25I remember that.
- 1:44:27Oh yes, I had the best seat in the house many times,
- 1:44:30many times.
- 1:44:32Bill Chadwick said to me up in the press lounge earlier,
- 1:44:35before the game, as Nicky was a tough guy,
- 1:44:39always hit people,
- 1:44:40he never got a high sticking penalty, did you ever?
- 1:44:44Oh, I might have, but really,
- 1:44:46the stick was always below the shoulder,
- 1:44:48we were trained to use our body,
- 1:44:51Harris threw a nice check out there tonight,
- 1:44:53he uses his body, his hips,
- 1:44:55Burilko could hit.
- 1:44:58But Bill was quite a guy, he gave me a penalty once,
- 1:45:02and it was the fifth penalty of one period that he gave me,
- 1:45:06he gave me five penalties in one period.
- 1:45:08But I never questioned Bill, never used any profanity,
- 1:45:11but I said, Bill, what was that one for?
- 1:45:12He said, as he said, it wasn't for what you did,
- 1:45:15he said it was for what you're about to do.
- 1:45:18Bill anticipated, we'll have to talk to him about that.
- 1:45:21I think Bill Chadwick was the greatest hockey referee
- 1:45:24that I've ever seen, they've had some good ones,
- 1:45:26and they have good ones today,
- 1:45:27with Clancy Gravel and Chadwick,
- 1:45:29they have the respect of the player,
- 1:45:32and quite a couple of good characters too,
- 1:45:34when you talk about Clancy.
- 1:45:36Oh, he's a great man, so is Bill,
- 1:45:40and Leo Gravel was a great referee.
- 1:45:46Bill, this game tonight, great checking game,
- 1:45:50I thought, tough checking game,
- 1:45:51both teams are sitting back waiting for the breaks,
- 1:45:54how does this game, in this playoff series,
- 1:45:56a two out of three series, go back and compare
- 1:45:59tonight's game with when you were playing
- 1:46:00in the playoffs for the Maple Leafs?
- 1:46:02Well, we always had a best four out of seven series,
- 1:46:07where you might be more inclined to be cautious
- 1:46:10with a two out of three series.
- 1:46:12It started out very strong on the first period,
- 1:46:14with good heavy checking,
- 1:46:17and a lot of physical work out there by both teams,
- 1:46:23and then the Rangers seemed to take over
- 1:46:26when the Islanders stopped hitting.
- 1:46:29Bill, going back to your years,
- 1:46:31the festival was a great checkers,
- 1:46:33the game nowadays, if you are the exception of course,
- 1:46:36you were one of the hitting forwards,
- 1:46:38to me now the hitters are the forwards more so
- 1:46:41than the defensemen, say back in the late 50s.
- 1:46:44Well, we were always caught,
- 1:46:48and the defensemen stand up front,
- 1:46:52not to back into the goal tender,
- 1:46:54as a result, I know we could go behind the goal tender
- 1:46:56and take the man off that was coming through,
- 1:46:59or else if the defensemen held their ground,
- 1:47:02just over the blue line, we could see the other forwards
- 1:47:05into the defensemen.
- 1:47:07But, it's a state shoot better today,
- 1:47:11I wouldn't say their skating is any better,
- 1:47:13but the defensemen are definitely better skaters.
- 1:47:16And it seems to be a little faster,
- 1:47:19but it's different from the stands looking out there
- 1:47:22than being out there.
- 1:47:24A little bit about yourself right now,
- 1:47:26I understand you're a golf pro,
- 1:47:27I understand I know you've been a golf pro for many years,
- 1:47:30what are you actually getting into?
- 1:47:32You were on a tour a while back,
- 1:47:34are you still active as far as playing on a tour,
- 1:47:37or strictly club work?
- 1:47:38Well, Sal, I've always played the winter tour,
- 1:47:42I've enjoyed that, but then getting back to a club,
- 1:47:44I've always been at a golf club,
- 1:47:46I'm at the International Golf Club in Bolton
- 1:47:49at the present time,
- 1:47:51golf has always gotten me into a lot of trouble,
- 1:47:54both for Toronto, and for Boston,
- 1:47:56I don't know about New York,
- 1:47:59but I remember playing 36 holes a day at the game
- 1:48:01when I was with Boston,
- 1:48:03we played the Rangers that night,
- 1:48:04and I was called into the office,
- 1:48:06I said, Mr. Ross, do you play 36 holes on Sunday,
- 1:48:10the day of the Ranger game?
- 1:48:12And I said, yes, Mr. Ross, I did.
- 1:48:15He didn't appreciate that fact,
- 1:48:17and it wasn't long before I went and quit the prune.
- 1:48:21But I remember Connie Smythe asking me,
- 1:48:23he said, Bill, I only reported to camp twice
- 1:48:27out of approximately nine years,
- 1:48:29and he said, when I reported late one year to Mr. Smythe,
- 1:48:32he said, Bill, what would you rather do,
- 1:48:33play an off-year golf?
- 1:48:35And I said, well, frankly, I'd rather play golf, Mr. Smythe,
- 1:48:38but he never permitted me to finish,
- 1:48:41I was gonna tell him that the sports didn't conflict,
- 1:48:43and one aided the other.
- 1:48:45I was straight at the bottom.
- 1:48:47Well, how did you finally get to New York,
- 1:48:51was that after playing the 36 holes at Boston?
- 1:48:54Yes, yes, I enjoyed New York,
- 1:48:57and it was just great coming down here
- 1:49:02to watch a hockey game, and I'm really enjoying it.
- 1:49:05Bill, yourself, you and your era
- 1:49:08were considered one of the toughest men in the game,
- 1:49:11definitely the hardest hitters.
- 1:49:13Now you have a player like Dave Schultz
- 1:49:15for the International Hockey League,
- 1:49:17an exciting player to watch,
- 1:49:19I don't know if it's for the hockey skill,
- 1:49:21maybe for his use of the body
- 1:49:24and his use of everything he can use
- 1:49:26in order to stop a player.
- 1:49:28In your day, was there as much stick work as there is today?
- 1:49:31How do you compare what they call violence,
- 1:49:33which I think is over-exaggerated nowadays,
- 1:49:35say, back to when you played?
- 1:49:37Well, we had a lot of violence,
- 1:49:41say, between Montreal and Toronto,
- 1:49:44there was a lot of blood spilled out there,
- 1:49:46the best hockey was played in the playoffs.
- 1:49:49I think every team in the National Hockey League,
- 1:49:52or any hockey league, requires a man like Dave Schultz,
- 1:49:55you have to have a policeman,
- 1:49:57and it won't be long before,
- 1:50:00I think Dave will improve upon his other qualifications
- 1:50:04as a player, you cease to become a rookie
- 1:50:07when you recognize how not to jeopardize
- 1:50:09your team's chances of winning.
- 1:50:11You know, when I first came up as a rookie,
- 1:50:13I took a lot of foolish penalties,
- 1:50:14but it was because through the endeavor
- 1:50:17of attempting to win.
- 1:50:18But I like Dave Schultz, he could play in my club.
- 1:50:24So you have a club right now, you'll put one together,
- 1:50:27you'd go for a man like Schultz,
- 1:50:28you couldn't have more than one Dave Schultz,
- 1:50:30I think on your team,
- 1:50:31because then you wouldn't play half the game
- 1:50:32in the penalty box, actually.
- 1:50:34Well, everybody has a Dave Schultz.
- 1:50:38Canadians used to have Bergeson,
- 1:50:41LeBrunes always had Cashman,
- 1:50:42Cashman to me is the third best hockey player
- 1:50:45when he's, well, without his back injury,
- 1:50:47when he's playing, third best hockey player with LeBrunes,
- 1:50:50in my book.
- 1:50:52I like to have somebody out there who can,
- 1:50:55well, protect the, there's always a little guy out there
- 1:50:59who has a lot of talent, but he can't exercise it
- 1:51:02if someone's shoving him around all the time.
- 1:51:05So a fellow like Cashman or Schultz or Bergeson,
- 1:51:09you can keep a little piece out there,
- 1:51:11the fans like it too.
- 1:51:13They don't like to see their team bullied out on the rink.
- 1:51:17That's for sure.
- 1:51:17Bill, yourself, you were involved, of course,
- 1:51:19in Montreal-Toronto playoff series.
- 1:51:23Was it such a close-knit league then,
- 1:51:25more so than it is now, you had more of the rivalries.
- 1:51:28I would say so.
- 1:51:29You saw each other more often,
- 1:51:32and the rivalries were, they were better at times
- 1:51:37because the owners had a leg on the players.
- 1:51:41They had somebody to replace you,
- 1:51:43at least five guys for your position.
- 1:51:45So it was tough making the team,
- 1:51:47but the most difficult job was remaining
- 1:51:50and staying with that club.
- 1:51:52And your lifespan as a hockey player at that time
- 1:51:55wasn't as long as it is now
- 1:51:58because of the fact that there were more hockey players
- 1:52:01for the six teams that were involved.
- 1:52:03Bill, yourself, did you carry with a player,
- 1:52:06say you got involved with a player,
- 1:52:08did you forget it after the game
- 1:52:09or did you remember about it in the next hockey game?
- 1:52:12Well, I think you had a very good memory,
- 1:52:16and I think you'd forget it until the next time
- 1:52:22that you teed it up on the ice.
- 1:52:24And you had to read players.
- 1:52:26You had to analyze their moves,
- 1:52:28which way they cut, which way they'd bake.
- 1:52:31And in the third period,
- 1:52:33the team with the most stamina
- 1:52:35would eventually win the hockey game.
- 1:52:38We won our first family cup against Montreal,
- 1:52:40and I know they were the class of the field,
- 1:52:43but we were the best conditions club in the league.
- 1:52:45Well, Bill, as a Nikita, I have to say,
- 1:52:47well, you're not wild anymore.
- 1:52:48You're a golfer and a today,
- 1:52:50and thanks very much for coming up.
- 1:52:51It's a pleasure talking to you.
- 1:52:53I really enjoyed being here, Sal.
- 1:52:55Okay, for a while, Bill, we have a Sony AM-FF,
- 1:52:59Digimatic box radio with push-butt controls
- 1:53:02and automatic sleep timer.
- 1:53:03The Sony also has illuminated,
- 1:53:05easy to read clock tools and a big three inch speaker.
- 1:53:09It's not just a radio, it's a Sony.
- 1:53:12The Rangers are back on ice.
- 1:53:15The auditors will be here in just a moment.
- 1:53:17They'll have the third period after this from Schaeffer.
- 1:53:20Listen to the smooth sliding sound of a country steel guitar.
- 1:53:37See yourself on a fine summer evening doing what you please,
- 1:53:41pleasing yourself with the mellow flavor of some fine cold beer.
- 1:53:45Not just any beer, Schaeffer beer.
- 1:53:48Schaeffer's the one beer that goes all evening,
- 1:53:50still tasting like the night is young.
- 1:53:53The one beer with flavor that never fades glass after frosty glass.
- 1:53:57Schaeffer stays so smooth, so first beer fine
- 1:54:01that every Schaeffer plays like music to your thirst.
- 1:54:05Schaeffer, it's the one beer to have
- 1:54:08when you're having more than one.
- 1:54:19The F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 1:54:23In this third period, and a big win-win situation,
- 1:54:26running the call to our right for the auditors
- 1:54:29and Ed Chalkament defending to our left for the Rangers.
- 1:54:33Wild-billed as the Niki played in the late 50s,
- 1:54:35not early 60s, and tell you so,
- 1:54:37when you're having a good time, the time really goes by.
- 1:54:40There goes your name.
- 1:54:42We'll have to discuss that one.
- 1:54:44I don't follow you, sir.
- 1:54:46Sir, while you played, we were in high school.
- 1:54:49Great school at the time.
- 1:54:51You just made it out.
- 1:54:52Off the face of, Charlie Hart control, shoots it ahead.
- 1:54:55Clark intercepts, makes his move to the outer version.
- 1:54:58Low line, puts on the brakes, versus on a stick check,
- 1:55:01and Parisi clears it ahead.
- 1:55:02Here's Westmoren, a center three on one.
- 1:55:04The honor of Westmoren cuts it's last for the right,
- 1:55:07and he kicks, saving up duty, made by Chalkament.
- 1:55:10So far with the rebound, Chalkament,
- 1:55:12swings it ahead, right the other way by Hart,
- 1:55:14sends left side of Chalkament,
- 1:55:16on a whistle, forward and offside.
- 1:55:19With Parisi ahead of the play, Hart threw it in,
- 1:55:23and so we'll bring it back, and we are
- 1:55:25carrying the chant of Eddie, Eddie,
- 1:55:28from this capacity crowd here at the garden.
- 1:55:30It has been a very strong game for Ed Chalkament,
- 1:55:34and that performance of the New York Rangers.
- 1:55:38Eddie bouncing back, it turned up,
- 1:55:41and it's been a lot of fun to watch the storm performance.
- 1:55:44It's a number of times up the spectrum,
- 1:55:46and it has been just brilliant tonight.
- 1:55:49Rangers lead it to nothing, we're underway at third for Ed.
- 1:55:52On the face off outside the Ranger line,
- 1:55:54Marshall shoots in, back behind the Ranger,
- 1:55:56that's Zagoski there, hit far behind the goal by Saint Laurent,
- 1:55:59whips it around, starts above the cat clear,
- 1:56:01Saint Laurent keeps it, sends it in front,
- 1:56:03Chalkament able to clear it aside away from Howard,
- 1:56:05towards Chalkament, from an ice cream,
- 1:56:07keeps it, sends to Marshall at the point.
- 1:56:09He loses on a stick check, recovered by Nicebroom,
- 1:56:11Nicebroom loses, Kirsten Kowski's turned around,
- 1:56:14then recovers past the feed, Saint Laurent,
- 1:56:16he's dumped by Marat, the Rangers clear a gun of his own,
- 1:56:19at center, Butler sweeps it by Lewis,
- 1:56:20cuts it across the out of the line,
- 1:56:22the angle of drive, kicks it in, by Rush.
- 1:56:25On the rebound is Lewis of the islanders,
- 1:56:27shoots it ahead for Saint Laurent,
- 1:56:29he moves to center, he's up across the Ranger line,
- 1:56:32looks to pull the spring, got a back pass for Lewis,
- 1:56:34he loses control, it's cleared up by Butler,
- 1:56:37Leeds Kowski, and across the line,
- 1:56:39and a whistle for an offside, and the bring it back.
- 1:56:42Rangers offside, and the bring it back,
- 1:56:45face off coming up inside the Ranger blue line,
- 1:56:48two line pass for Kowski, bringing it back,
- 1:56:51and so they'll face it off.
- 1:56:5318-42 remaining, third period, Rangers lead 2-0,
- 1:56:56and the second period goes by Brad Park and Keith Kowski.
- 1:57:00Now, born and Kachuk will go out this draw,
- 1:57:03controlled by Beverly, half-time to go,
- 1:57:06but they are in the
- 1:57:16rest of the punt, but looks to clear,
- 1:57:27cannot get it by Faber, into the slot,
- 1:57:32Sanderson, he is struck by a heart and a pedaling call,
- 1:57:36and they hold him to the ragger,
- 1:57:39this one, that time it was, well,
- 1:57:41a perfect night for it with the Oscars,
- 1:57:44and so, he's going to tug at it with his stick,
- 1:57:46and as soon as Derrick felt that stick,
- 1:57:47he knows how to react to the situation,
- 1:57:49and he reacted well.
- 1:57:50I would expect that someone opening an up and up tonight
- 1:57:55will have an enteric Sanderson.
- 1:57:56It is Hartford, and he's coming up from the right side,
- 1:58:03and the Rangers have an advantage,
- 1:58:06but Tell steps off, Pickers walk to the right,

- 2:01:05so the
- 2:01:35ultimate
- 2:01:58Wheeling up to the out of the line, makes a hard check along the boards from Buckland, and loses control.
- 2:02:03Out of the
- 2:02:26line, a
- 2:02:29lot of hard work by the
- 2:02:32out of the stuff that up a power play goal by Billy
- 2:02:35Harris from the left of
- 2:02:38Chocobit and the Ranger leaders now two to one
- 2:02:41good play by Billy Harris consistent checking by
- 2:02:44Parisi and drawing behind a net working
- 2:02:47that bucket to the corner and Harris just taking away
- 2:02:50and working on family came to come out in front of
- 2:02:53Chocobit and Chocobit was a little cautious he had
- 2:02:56a man to the other side of the cage went down
- 2:02:59first had to make the first move Harris beat him up high

- 2:03:23Beverly spinning on Saint Laurent shoots it out of his own
- 2:03:26intercepted by Marshall a lead off the mark face down
- 2:03:29to the right by Chocobit Park back for Park back
- 2:03:32behind his goal line now centered around the board
- 2:03:35Stankowski starts up with a deserve a left bottom right summer
- 2:03:38long drive club save to the left made by Rush leaves it behind
- 2:03:41the goal for Louis loses control then whips it around the
- 2:03:44boards to nice from ice from kicks it ahead but it's kept
- 2:03:47by Louis rolls it back to the far side Saint Laurent back
- 2:03:50forward back past now for Marshall ahead for his defense
- 2:03:53Parker Louis Louis shoots it out of the center of Saint Laurent
- 2:03:56breaking on Park he's up to the Ranger line loses on a
- 2:03:59poke check falls down on the park and a loose puck picked up by
- 2:04:02Park Park starts up for the Rangers Park to the Ranger line
- 2:04:05met by the check of Howard who knocks it aside Park
- 2:04:08recovers sentence to center through the legs of Irvin Irvin
- 2:04:11and Marshall turn each other around and then the loose puck
- 2:04:14by Saint Laurent of the others like that by Park as he moves
- 2:04:17to the Ranger line hit hard by Butler and it's sent back
- 2:04:20the other way at center it is Marshall all the others ahead
- 2:04:23for Howard across the Ranger line hours past the lead ice
- 2:04:26group that changes the line out to the point Marshall his shot
- 2:04:29wide with ice from setting a straight up point to lose his shot
- 2:04:32blocked by Park kept in by Louis loses on a stick check to
- 2:04:35retail for tone goes with Butler and across the other one
- 2:04:38Butler was shot way off a slap to the right of Rush by a good
- 2:04:41ten feet and the others move it back ice from up across the
- 2:04:44Ranger line takes a show from Irvin keeps going a wrap around
- 2:04:47of them stopped by the stick of chocolate. How does it really
- 2:04:50come alive here before. I'm an out well two to one.
- 2:04:53But what's it around the boards for urban urbanist for check by
- 2:04:56ice from Irvin makes the turn and starts up shoots it out to
- 2:04:59center and got a pass for Joe back intercepted by Howard.
- 2:05:02Howard a flip that is knocked away by Gresham picked up on the red line by
- 2:05:05Hart and he rolls it in right side of chocolate and he makes the
- 2:05:08stick stop whistle on the play Jerry Hart standing near the Ranger
- 2:05:12bench was high stick by a Ranger jumping off the bench.
- 2:05:17And Hart took it on the top of the head.
- 2:05:21He got clobbered by either a Ranger jumping off or back on the
- 2:05:25bench. I saw Vickers coming off and Irvin heading back to the
- 2:05:28bench. They both have the sticks up high and it was total
- 2:05:31of it all.
- 2:05:33Part on top of the head and they're looking for hot for blood
- 2:05:36right now on hot said to get the five minute penalty but there
- 2:05:39isn't any there. Harris already took the one look.
- 2:05:42Urban was man. He was on the way into the door when it's a
- 2:05:46hot head to stick up in the air up in the air and his stick came
- 2:05:49down on Jerry.
- 2:05:51Seven oh three time of the high stick on that over that
- 2:05:54island were going to the power play scored by a house.
- 2:05:58But the first ever playoff.
- 2:06:03It's due to one.
- 2:06:06I don't know.
- 2:06:08Sanderson.
- 2:06:10It's all the way down.
- 2:06:12Gresham backboard whites it around the board.
- 2:06:15But it's not.
- 2:06:17With the.
- 2:06:20Center.
- 2:06:22I guess.
- 2:06:24Alive loses.
- 2:06:26Drunk.
- 2:06:28Through it is back.
- 2:06:29The.
- 2:06:33And.
- 2:06:35But.
- 2:06:37Offside.
- 2:06:39You know most men's hairsprays look fine but how do they feel.
- 2:06:42You'll find that most of them make your hair feel wet when
- 2:06:45you're spray them on but by Thomas drive three is different.
- 2:06:49It is the only leading hairspray that goes on almost dry and
- 2:06:52when they do dry most hairsprays make your hair feel
- 2:06:55stiff.
- 2:06:56But by Thomas drive three your hair feels softer not
- 2:06:59nearly as stiff by Thomas drive three.
- 2:07:02The hairspray that feels as good as it looks on the face
- 2:07:05out of the shooting left side of chocolate run whites it
- 2:07:08around the board kept in by John Puckman at the right
- 2:07:10point.
- 2:07:11Bobbitt by Sanderson dumps it back behind document
- 2:07:13greasy there flips up front door and it's not a
- 2:07:15big saving of duty made by chocolate on the rebound
- 2:07:18it's better to hit the Sanderson at center puts on the
- 2:07:20brakes as he's met by John Puckman the back masses
- 2:07:23of the rock people are not.
- 2:07:26All the way down we have the medicine remaining on the
- 2:07:28other side of the 11 55 remaining third period
- 2:07:32Rangers lead a two to one of course of playoff hockey
- 2:07:35we can't go to overtime Dennis Puckman starts up
- 2:07:38ahead of goes to center ice to do it right wing
- 2:07:41faith for Billy Howe has broken up by the rock who dumps
- 2:07:43it all the way down rolling out in front of Islander
- 2:07:45or Goulding Glenn West who leaves it for John Puckman
- 2:07:48Puckman standing back behind us that now looks to
- 2:07:51regroup this power play for the others now flips it
- 2:07:54on the right wing for Billy Harris but he over
- 2:07:56throws and the rock dumps it right back here.
- 2:07:59I was now having difficulty getting this power play
- 2:08:01going John Puckman is back for just 25 seconds on
- 2:08:04the Ranger penalty as Puckman starts up ahead of
- 2:08:07goes to center ice to Billy Harris Harris sweeping
- 2:08:09out across the range of our back pass for growing
- 2:08:12growing a shot save made by chocolate with a big
- 2:08:15crowd of one of them Ranger that he's keeping an
- 2:08:17input for Puckman his not one of the rebound
- 2:08:19for the I go sets up pizza.
- 2:08:22The way the Phillies have cleared by a very
- 2:08:25popular using his strength to take it away from
- 2:08:28going to clear it out front and out of the zone
- 2:08:31over his back just pop up across the range of
- 2:08:34penetrates to the far corner fast but the
- 2:08:36Gillies knocked around the board by the way to
- 2:08:38the fast and picked off by Sanderson Sanderson out
- 2:08:41of the zone right wing pass down to the Butler
- 2:08:43intercepted by Gillies who cuts back to the out of
- 2:08:45the blue line makes the turn he's up to center
- 2:08:47moving with born across the range of our loses on
- 2:08:50the stick check to retail retail is one on two
- 2:08:52retail pulls off at the out of the line what's
- 2:08:55that Louis breaks it up and shoots it back to

- 2:08:59Rangers ahead for vectors and across the out of
- 2:09:01the line across the hotel he goes and he shoots
- 2:09:03it is blocked by Louis retail takes it back
- 2:09:05winds it around the board Joe back comes up with
- 2:09:07a boost but he goes to the corner he throws it
- 2:09:09out to the point put us off the market Beverly
- 2:09:11has to make the turn and chase it all the way
- 2:09:13down Beverly catches up with it inside the
- 2:09:15range of low line watch my nice driven
- 2:09:17post-mortar question who can't off the board
- 2:09:19to Joe but he loses the house
- 2:09:21cross-site space for the range of territory
- 2:09:23a shot blocked by Beverly Beverly winds it
- 2:09:25around but nice for intercepts he's up the far
- 2:09:27board he moves to the corner he's tied up again
- 2:09:29by Beverly Beverly gets it off the
- 2:09:31Vickers Vickers clears it out of the zone
- 2:09:33played by a backscanning Louis that center
- 2:09:35I had now for Howard at the range of
- 2:09:37honor he leaves St. Louis then again he's
- 2:09:39knocked down the play by Beverly who has
- 2:09:41had a tremendous sequence he breaks up the
- 2:09:43pass play ends up sending it to the board
- 2:09:45and falls on the front three excellent
- 2:09:47defensive plays by Nick Bevely
- 2:09:49Sala Ron had the play and
- 2:09:51Maestro on the other side and Beverly had
- 2:09:53to cover up sprawling just laying his
- 2:09:55body out no way Sala Ron could have got
- 2:09:57the puck by it and he just
- 2:09:59picked it up against the board and Nick
- 2:10:01Bevely doing an outstanding job an
- 2:10:03unparalleled job throughout this season
- 2:10:05and he's doing a good job again today

- 2:15:48Gallagher's taking control of the hockey game.
- 2:15:51Hustling. Gillies doing that on sheer hustle.

- 2:15:57Greshner trying to poke it out and it's Gillies in the chest.
- 2:16:00Drop down behind Greshner and Gillies going in that direction.
- 2:16:03He's jockeling with a great shot to the corner.
- 2:16:05Eddie Tocquement who have been so brilliant has things turned around.
- 2:16:11Only one goal can be called.
- 2:16:14Eddie's fault when he gambled it came out and it just did not work with John Mottman
- 2:16:19able to get to the puck after it took a tricky hunt.
- 2:16:22And now he's beaten out a breakaway by Gillies.
- 2:16:24The goal by John Mottman assisted by McFiddler and Marshall at 11-51.
- 2:16:28Now Gillies from Westmore and Lewis at 13-30.

- 2:17:59the late offside call that time and they bring it back face off
- 2:18:02outside the islander blue line.
- 2:18:05And, Ma, the Islanders have the momentum.
- 2:18:07They knew they had to win a game here at the Garden.
- 2:18:09They've taken control of the hockey game playing an outstanding third period.
- 2:18:13Now everything on the Rangers and the Islanders with that momentum.
- 2:18:17By 45 remaining third period on the face off, Park comes in.
- 2:18:21The center is to Gillies.

- 2:18:43Well, before the game, a lot of people were discussing, including ourselves,
- 2:18:48the importance of the first goal as it turns out.
- 2:18:51It really did not matter.
- 2:18:52Brad Park scored it in the second period.
- 2:18:54The importance of the second goal did not matter either.
- 2:18:57Now, it was Murkowski in the second period to get the Rangers a 2-0 lead on the Islanders.
- 2:19:03Well, another safe act from all season long has come up with three here in the third
- 2:19:08and in dramatic fashion have taken the lead 3-2.
- 2:19:11And, Ma, that snicked in first goal that the Islanders got early in the period, the big one.
- 2:19:15The Rangers failed on a power play.
- 2:19:17The Islanders succeeded off the face off.
- 2:19:19It's sent to the front corner, picked up by Drew and the Islanders, loses control.
- 2:19:23Then it's recovered by Westmore and he shoots it out of the zone.
- 2:19:26The Islanders now in a defensive shell.
- 2:19:28Reschner back forward and Ranger West shoots it to center.
- 2:19:31Westmore in the center, Winks for Drew and a move onside, stick him through.
- 2:19:34Drops to Breaker to the fence but Morant stick checks it away.

- 2:19:52Beautiful save by Resch.
- 2:19:54Coming up, five feet to cut down the angle.
- 2:19:57Did not come out that much but just enough to stop that drive and give Vickers very little to shoot at.
- 2:20:03And he covers up to stop Lear.
- 2:20:05Great pass by Jean Ratel, sending Vickers in.
- 2:20:07Pull that shot.
- 2:20:08And as you can see, one off Resch was there.

- 2:20:13Mecham, the rebound just came to Resch's right.
- 2:20:17Vickers unable to get his stick on that rebound.

- 2:20:59Bounces in front.
- 2:21:00And Resch with a chance to go down.
- 2:21:02And Resch with that good recovery on the shot.
- 2:21:05Joe Back's shot went through.
- 2:21:07However, it missed the net.
- 2:21:09It bounced back.
- 2:21:10Hit the netting and came out in front.
- 2:21:11The rest of the people are getting to it before Joe Back came in.

- 2:28:20That's 20 seconds remaining.
- 2:28:21Grillen after it.
- 2:28:22Grillen is shot from the angle.
- 2:28:23It's locked away from Stupkowski.
- 2:28:25The race is back for Hamlin.
- 2:28:26And all with Stupkowski.
- 2:28:27Schneller comes up with it.
- 2:28:28Sanderson hits the center.
- 2:28:29Dennis Watson intercepts.
- 2:28:3015 seconds.
- 2:28:31Puckbent shoots Eddard.
- 2:28:32From the whistle for an offside against the Islanders.
- 2:28:34And they bring it back.
- 2:28:36And Leon Stickel, the linesman on the play is calling a face off
- 2:28:39all the way back in the Islanders zone.
- 2:28:41Calling it a deliberate offside.
- 2:28:43On Dennis Puckbent.
- 2:28:44And the Islanders are furious coming out to argue that play with Stickel.
- 2:28:47Had it not been Nicole that way, the face off would have been a center ice.
- 2:28:51And if it's not set up to stage with 12 seconds left, the Rangers will have to face off to
- 2:28:55the right.
- 2:28:56Upland rest deep in island territory.
- 2:28:5912 seconds remaining.
- 2:29:01Face off.
- 2:29:02Upcoming.
- 2:29:03Islanders continue to argue that deliberate offside by linesman Stickel.
- 2:29:09Islander Captain Eddie Westphal continues the discussion now with Montgomery Willie
- 2:29:16Harris.
- 2:29:17Big face off now deep in.
- 2:29:18Islander ice.
- 2:29:19Rangers have pulled Chalkamon.
- 2:29:21They have the empty net.
- 2:29:22The extra forward is on.
- 2:29:24It's Ratel, Vickers, Fairburn, Sanderson.
- 2:29:28Burke and JoBeth on ice for the Rangers.
- 2:29:32And then a Westphal and Ratel on the draw.
- 2:29:36It has been a tremendous game for Eddie Westphal.
- 2:29:393-2.
- 2:29:41The Islanders on top.
- 2:29:43Both clubs talking it over now.
- 2:29:45George Al Auburn has pulled Parisi and Drew it over to the bench to give instructions.
- 2:29:56We're waiting for face off now.
- 2:29:58Willie Harris comes over to say, hey, let's play hockey.
- 2:30:03Auburn talking with Harris now.
- 2:30:05Finally Parisi has back.
- 2:30:07Throw the face off circle.
- 2:30:10And now we're just about set.
- 2:30:12Westphal against Ratel on this throw.
- 2:30:14Bruce at the circle.
- 2:30:16Sterling controlled by Poppins.
- 2:30:18Cash player.
- 2:30:19And he does.
- 2:30:20To the middle side.
- 2:30:21And it slips out of the zone.
- 2:30:22The flex inner vader out of the bench.
- 2:30:25And we have a face off coming up now.
- 2:30:27Outside the out of the blue line with just five seconds left.
- 2:30:31The Islanders right now arguing that the Rangers should have been called from face off all the way down.
- 2:30:36I think that's immaterial now.
- 2:30:37Five seconds remaining.
- 2:30:38And the Islanders really are playing a super game.
- 2:30:41Super defensively, ma.
- 2:30:42They have kept the Rangers away from good scoring opportunities throughout this territory.
- 2:30:46Westphal on the face now with Joe Banner.
- 2:30:49The idea with Joe Banner is that the hope is he can direct it toward grass.
- 2:30:54Although the face off is out deep.
- 2:30:56Lansman Hodges waves in on the face.
- 2:30:58And the person sent a rescue in place.
- 2:31:00He pays the throw in from the middle line.
- 2:31:02He goes wide.
- 2:31:03And the desert side of the bench in.
- 2:31:05The rejected Ranger club leaves the ice.
- 2:31:08The Islanders come to the ice.
- 2:31:10They have each other.
- 2:31:12Steve Bickers just puts his stick down.
- 2:31:14Broken on the glass.
- 2:31:15Hit down below us.
- 2:31:16As the Rangers.
- 2:31:17Lamp the ice.
- 2:31:18The Outer is there as it makes on the Stanley Cup.
- 2:31:21And I tell you this.
- 2:31:23It has now come down to a such and death one game season.
- 2:31:27For the New York Rangers.
- 2:31:29And that season will stop.
- 2:31:31And I hope not conclude.
- 2:31:33And when I saw a cover of CM on Thursday night.
- 2:31:35And then back to the wall.
- 2:31:36One more game.
- 2:31:37The Islanders are spirited hockey club.
- 2:31:40They worked.
- 2:31:41They continued to work.
- 2:31:42They did not die when they were down by two goals.
- 2:31:44They came back strong.
- 2:31:45To win the hockey game.
- 2:31:47Preservedly so.
- 2:31:48What a terrible final.
- 2:31:49Out of this.
- 2:31:50Feet for the Rangers.
- 2:31:51Coming from behind.
- 2:31:52The Jumping Club has lost two in a three.
- 2:31:54One game to nothing.
- 2:31:55Right after this.
- 2:31:56From Schaeffer.
- 2:31:57Schaeffer is the one beer to have.
- 2:32:00Now here's a word from America's oldest lager beer.
- 2:32:04Hey Schaeffer.
- 2:32:05Give the one beer to have.
- 2:32:08When you haven't won the one.
- 2:32:13Did you know that the Schaeffer people are the oldest.
- 2:32:15The most experienced lager brewers in America.
- 2:32:18It takes experience to brew any kind of beer.
- 2:32:21And the best way to do it.
- 2:32:23Is to have a beer.
- 2:32:24It takes experience to brew any kind of beer.
- 2:32:27But it's taking a little bit more experience to brew Schaeffer.
- 2:32:30One beer is fine enough to give you a flavor that's never tasted.
- 2:32:34If you'd like to experience the result of all that brewing experience.
- 2:32:38All you gotta do is give a couple of frosty cold Schaeffers a try.
- 2:32:55Half an hour to Schaeffer brewing.
- 2:32:58New York.
- 2:32:59New York.
- 2:33:00Shots on goal on the third.
- 2:33:02Item is ten. Rangers seven. Rangers outshot the Adidas 31-25.
- 2:33:08The penalties on the third.
- 2:33:09Hartford set one three nine.
- 2:33:10Maratka interference in four twenty.
- 2:33:12Irvin for high sticking at seven oh three.
- 2:33:15And Stewart for a one at sixteen fifty five.
- 2:33:19Rangers brewing a two nothing lead on the goals by Perkins and Kelsky.
- 2:33:23On the second and third it was Harris on a foul play by Billy Harris and the Adidas.
- 2:33:27John Furtman on a wrap around with Schalke but out of position.
- 2:33:30And that first givings on a breakaway with the game winner at fifteen fifty.
- 2:33:35So what happens to Big Rapid on the post game show in just a moment.
- 2:33:40The Islanders jump in front.
- 2:33:42And game number one of our best two out of three.
- 2:33:45One game to nothing.
- 2:33:47They have now won three straight from the New York Rangers.
- 2:33:50And Furman had all kinds of problems with winning two straight here up the guard.
- 2:33:55Sunday night as it turns out was their first ever victory here at Up the Guard.
- 2:33:58Now they've come roaring back here with the three two come from behind win here.
- 2:34:03And they open up the playoffs the very first playoff game of all time for the New York Outers.
- 2:34:08And of course a memorable win.
- 2:34:10Three to two for final four.
- 2:34:12And among the cheering we've been hearing tonight.
- 2:34:15So the crowd is really enjoying themselves.
- 2:34:18Particularly the Islander portion of the crowd.
- 2:34:20And I would think a lot of these folks are just naturally cheerful.
- 2:34:23They'll probably wake up cheerful tomorrow.
- 2:34:25That is if they get a good night's sleep.
- 2:34:27And you know that it's hard to get if you happen to go to bed with a headache and can't sleep.
- 2:34:31The answer, exeferent PM.
- 2:34:33A nighttime pain reliever.
- 2:34:35Exeferent PM relieves headache and its tension helps you relax for a good night's sleep.
- 2:34:39So you should wake up feeling refreshed.
- 2:34:41Work through brightness.
- 2:34:43Of course you take exeferent PM only as directed.
- 2:34:45But imagine feeling that good in the morning even if you have a headache tonight.
- 2:34:50This is WNEW, Metromedia Radio in New York.

- 2:35:03The Knicks were beaten by the Houston Rockets in Houston by the score of 99 to 84.
- 2:35:08Out of WNEW's umbrella only the Mets had success today.

- 2:35:57Stay tuned for Sal and the Post Game followed by Dick Schumper right here on WNEW.
- 2:36:01Final again, the Outlanders 3 for Rangers 2.
- 2:36:05The Madison Square Garden in New York.
- 2:36:07This is part of our movement with Sal Pacino.
- 2:36:09Now for the Post Game here as Sal.
- 2:36:11Thank you, Moav and the Islanders.
- 2:36:13A super victory for them.
- 2:36:14They came into this hockey game and they committed a series knowing they had to win one at the Garden.
- 2:36:19They've had trouble doing so.
- 2:36:21Rangers playing the Rangers for a win at a time before Sunday night here.
- 2:36:24And the beating of the Rangers Sunday night coming back with a big victory coming from behind
- 2:36:28with three big goals on the third period to win the hockey game 3-2.
- 2:36:33First period was a tight check-in game throughout.
- 2:36:37Moav goalscored, Rangers out shooting the Islanders 10-8.
- 2:36:40Penalty is Burt Marshall for tripping at 4-0-4.
- 2:36:43Teddy Irvin for fighting with...
- 2:36:46Teddy Irvin a fighting penalty, Gary Howard a fighting penalty, and Jerry Butler an elbow penalty.
- 2:36:51All in a safe play. That's coming in 10-48.
- 2:36:54JP Parisi a hooking penalty at 14-21.
- 2:36:57And the story in the hockey game, the Rangers inability to score on the power play.
- 2:37:01Eddie Westwell, the number 8 here in the Islanders,
- 2:37:04was a better penalty killer when he was with the Boston Brawlers.
- 2:37:07Just quite a super hockey game.
- 2:37:09He, Lorde Hedding, Dennis Brackman, the complete mallard of the facts.
- 2:37:13Glen Resch playing steady and goals throughout.
- 2:37:17Back to both teams with a plan goal scored.
- 2:37:19Only one questionable goal.
- 2:37:22That's the goal of tonight's hockey game up by Jean-Pierre Pouf.
- 2:37:25We'll get to that one in a minute.
- 2:37:27In the second period, a tight game continued.
- 2:37:30Brad Clark his first goal of the playoffs.
- 2:37:33Scored the first goal of the hockey game.
- 2:37:36Getting a face-off, Jean Retel winning a face-off.
- 2:37:39Throwing it back to Park.
- 2:37:40And all the way back, Roger Baer was hesitant whether to go for the puck or not.
- 2:37:45Did not. Clark took the shot.
- 2:37:47Dennis Potman pushing out the Steve Vickers in front of that.
- 2:37:50And it had a head-off for Dennis Potman as they originally had given the goal to Steve Vickers.
- 2:37:56But after I'm sure they, after hooking at the replay, I'm sure they saw that Dennis Potman had deflected it.
- 2:38:02And that the Rangers had won nothing.
- 2:38:04Peter Stupkowski at 19-25 on a play with the Islanders completely lapsed off.
- 2:38:09Clark carrying it center, giving it to Beverly who went over the blue line on the right side shot.
- 2:38:13The puck sail wide.
- 2:38:15Heron down the other side. Stupkowski coming down the left side.
- 2:38:18Fine. To the left of Resch who was moving over after cutting down the angle on Beverly.
- 2:38:23A beautiful shot by Stupkowski.
- 2:38:25Catching right inside the post and that tied the hockey.
- 2:38:28That put the Rangers ahead two to nothing.
- 2:38:30Second period ended that way.
- 2:38:31Penalties, Irvin and Lewis at 19-27 for high-sticking.
- 2:38:34Dennis Potman and the Islanders for tripping at 15-27.
- 2:38:37Glenn Resch, Roger Bear, both getting slashing penalties at 15-45.
- 2:38:42And while Dennis Potman was off, the Rangers had a four and three opportunity and weren't able to score.
- 2:38:47Resch with a couple of good saves.
- 2:38:49Second period, shots on goal.
- 2:38:51Rangers 14, Islanders 7.
- 2:38:53And the Rangers led after two by the score of two to nothing.
- 2:38:56In the third period, Jerry Hart went off for tripping at 139.
- 2:39:00And again, the Rangers failed to score on the power play.
- 2:39:03Gilles Moran went for it, the periods of four-twenty of the third period and that's when it started.
- 2:39:08Islanders with a couple of good opportunities.
- 2:39:11Finally with JP Parisi and Jude moving and they also played exceptionally well.
- 2:39:14Doing a lot of digging behind it.
- 2:39:16The puck drifting into the corner.
- 2:39:17Harris and Beverly battling.
- 2:39:19Harris coming out with the puck.
- 2:39:20With Parisi to the right of Jockerman.
- 2:39:22Harris just walked out.
- 2:39:24Deed once on Jockerman, put it up high.
- 2:39:26And that brought the Islanders to within one.
- 2:39:28That power play goal, the only power play goal of the game.
- 2:39:30And if you really look down at it, the Islanders were able to score on a power play.
- 2:39:34The Rangers were not.
- 2:39:36Then at 11.51, Philip McMillan to Burt Marshall.
- 2:39:40Burt Marshall dumping it in.
- 2:39:41A race for the puck.
- 2:39:43Derek Sanderson, John Potman in the race.
- 2:39:46Tachemac coming out, scrolling for it.
- 2:39:48Had a piece of it.
- 2:39:49However, it went behind the net.
- 2:39:50Potman was all alone.
- 2:39:51Picked it up, went around the net.
- 2:39:53Had an empty net to put it into.
- 2:39:55Tying the hockey game up two to two.
- 2:39:57And the momentum was all over the islanders.
- 2:39:59They had it.
- 2:40:00They were down two to nothing.
- 2:40:01And they picked up as the Rangers did in Atlanta on Friday night.
- 2:40:05Irvin picking up a penalty at 7.03.
- 2:40:07And Stewart for hooking at 16.55.
- 2:40:09But the big goal of Clark Gillies, assisted by Westball.
- 2:40:13And Lewis, the puck going into the Ranger and deflecting off.
- 2:40:17Greshner hitting Gillies in the chest.
- 2:40:19Gillies is bullying his way through.
- 2:40:20Morack and Greshner picked it up.
- 2:40:21And a beautiful shot.
- 2:40:22Beating Jockerman right inside the post on Jockerman's left side.
- 2:40:25The Islanders went 3-2.
- 2:40:27They went on to win a hard, poor hockey game.
- 2:40:30The Islanders had a strong third period to win it.
- 2:40:32And the Rangers had their backs against the wall.
- 2:40:34They have to go into Long Island, the National Coliseum,
- 2:40:37and win that game on Thursday night.
- 2:40:39Or it's an early ending for the scene at the New York Rangers.
- 2:40:42Stars awarded here for Clark Gillies.
- 2:40:44First star, Jean Potman.
- 2:40:45Second, Brent Pop.
- 2:40:46Third, I'd have to give Eddie Westball the first star.
- 2:40:48But a sixth on a winning goal in a super hockey game.
- 2:40:51Throw out.
- 2:40:52Shots on goal in the third period.
- 2:40:53The Islanders had 10.
- 2:40:54Rangers 7.
- 2:40:56The Islanders have a game of 31.
- 2:40:58The Islanders have 25.
- 2:41:00The score, the Islanders 3, the Rangers 2, and the
- 2:41:02Islanders take the lead in the best two or three series, one game to none.
- 2:41:06Other games in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs,
- 2:41:09the Boston Bruins falling all over the Chicago Black Bucks.
- 2:41:12And the Black Bucks have had injury problems throughout the season.
- 2:41:15Playing the season as playing a playoff,
- 2:41:18the first game of the playoffs, the way they play during a season.
- 2:41:21Not very good at all.
- 2:41:22Boston winning that 8-2.
- 2:41:23In fact, the Black Bucks, a strong favorite for first place in their division, ended up third.
- 2:41:29In Pittsburgh, with St. Louis jumping off into a 2-0 lead.
- 2:41:32They could not hold it.
- 2:41:33The Mellows high-scoring Penguins down.
- 2:41:35The Penguins ending up winning the hockey game 4-3.
- 2:41:38A later start out on the West Coast.
- 2:41:40Toronto is at L.A.
- 2:41:41Well, a bad night for the Knicks.

- 2:42:41Well, the New York Islanders, a surprising club throughout,
- 2:42:45and a club who worked all season long.
- 2:42:48Good defensive hockey club throughout the season, consistent, good here again.
- 2:42:53Keeping the Rangers two within two, going into the third period,
- 2:42:56scoring a power play goal, and then the goal by Jean Pappin,
