Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: We got our first look at the unofficial depth chart
- 0:06Speaker 1: earlier this week. Which workie do you guys think has
- 0:08Speaker 1: the best chance of moving up before the start of
- 0:10Speaker 1: the season.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I'm gonna go with Raymond Bahassik, the young defensive tackle
- 0:14Speaker 2: from North Carolina who had no expectations but has played
- 0:17Speaker 2: pretty well the last couple of weeks.
- 0:18Speaker 3: He could go from three to two none but Antonio Johnson.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Welcome into our Wednesday edition of jag XAM. I'm Kennannie Stevens,
- 0:45Speaker 1: Brian Sexton, John Osier with me this morning. Today's show
- 0:48Speaker 1: is brought to you by Jet Home Loans and training
- 0:51Speaker 1: Camp about to get going. Players aren't quite out there,
- 0:53Speaker 1: some of them might be. They're gonna get their stretch
- 0:55Speaker 1: on soon and get practice going, and got a game
- 0:58Speaker 1: on Saturday. Starting to feel like coming together.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Here.
- 1:02Speaker 1: We got that unofficial depth chart, which is so official.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Well that's the reason there are really no surprises on
- 1:08Speaker 2: it right now. I mean, you look at a guy,
- 1:10Speaker 2: you look at a guy like Antonio Johnson right who
- 1:13Speaker 2: is three right now behind Daniel Thomas. Clearly he is
- 1:17Speaker 2: a better prospect than Daniel Thomas's. And I really like
- 1:20Speaker 2: Daniel Thomas and waited for him to become a guy
- 1:24Speaker 2: who you could count on here. But he's three because
- 1:27Speaker 2: behind Daniel Thomas, because he's a rookie.
- 1:29Speaker 3: In a week that could change, ye And I said
- 1:32Speaker 3: him at the top because he's clearly impressed. And is
- 1:37Speaker 3: he ahead of Daniel Thomas? I don't know. You get
- 1:40Speaker 3: the sense of the coaches believe that they have seen
- 1:43Speaker 3: Daniel Thomas do the role so much that they don't
- 1:46Speaker 3: want to switch that up. But maybe it's him. I
- 1:51Speaker 3: don't know that any of them will move up from
- 1:52Speaker 3: their spots before the regular season regular season, because it
- 1:56Speaker 3: feels like that's sort of where they make sense. But
- 1:59Speaker 3: if you get a numbers thing at safety, maybe Antonio
- 2:01Speaker 3: in the past.
- 2:01Speaker 2: And I brought up Vahasik because I watched him the
- 2:03Speaker 2: last couple of days when they were in full pads,
- 2:05Speaker 2: and I was, who is that guy? We're in fifty
- 2:07Speaker 2: nine and that's Vahasik, who the seventh round pick from
- 2:11Speaker 2: North Carolina that you know, overlooked in many cases, not
- 2:14Speaker 2: a guy that's gonna contribute this year or maybe even next.
- 2:17Speaker 2: But you can see the physical skills there. You can
- 2:18Speaker 2: see why they drafted him. He's tough, He's.
- 2:20Speaker 1: Strong a project they want to work on for sure.
- 2:23Speaker 1: We'll touch a little bit more on that in a minute,
- 2:24Speaker 1: but let's start with our big things. First big thing
- 2:27Speaker 1: is buzz. We always talk about people not giving Trevor
- 2:30Speaker 1: Lawrence the respect that he deserves. But Brian, you said,
- 2:32Speaker 1: you saw some lists and you saw some things where
- 2:34Speaker 1: he was getting maybe a little of the credit we
- 2:37Speaker 1: think he may ye.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Do you know the Athletic had him in that tier two,
- 2:41Speaker 2: right just below the elite, and you know who the
- 2:43Speaker 2: elites are, the Mahomes, the Burroughs, the Josh Allen's, Aaron
- 2:46Speaker 2: Rodgers of the world. They put Justin Herbert in that
- 2:49Speaker 2: and I think when you look at his stats and
- 2:51Speaker 2: the things he's done in his first couple of years,
- 2:52Speaker 2: he belongs there. And then there's that second tier of quarterbacks,
- 2:55Speaker 2: and they had Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson and then Trevor.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But listening to their podcast, it seems like, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: they see a lot of buzz for Trevor moving in,
- 3:06Speaker 2: you know, being that guy the weapons in his skill set.
- 3:09Speaker 2: And then yesterday Bill Barnwell on ESPN site had Trevor
- 3:12Speaker 2: as one of those guys who could jump into the
- 3:16Speaker 2: MVP conversation in his third season in the NFL. So
- 3:21Speaker 2: whether he can or he does, or any of that,
- 3:23Speaker 2: there is a lot of buzz about Trevor Lawrence two
- 3:26Speaker 2: weeks into training camp.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I think those assessments, if you look at it as
- 3:32Speaker 3: objectively as he can to make perfect sense, Jaguars fans
- 3:36Speaker 3: all off season would get very upset with list. People
- 3:39Speaker 3: get mad at lists, Brian because their guy isn't the top.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I get mad at list.
- 3:42Speaker 3: That's what journalism is these days. Lists. If you look
- 3:46Speaker 3: at Trevor, that's sort of where if you step back
- 3:49Speaker 3: from it all, he's had a half a really really
- 3:51Speaker 3: good season and he was unbelievable for some moments. So
- 3:55Speaker 3: it's given fans a lot of hope and I think
- 3:58Speaker 3: he's going to be among that elite. But that's his
- 4:01Speaker 3: storyline right now. He is about where they have him,
- 4:04Speaker 3: with an incredibly good chance to go join the elite.
- 4:08Speaker 3: This could be the year that happens, but if you're
- 4:11Speaker 3: trying to be objective about it, you can't put him
- 4:14Speaker 3: there yet.
- 4:14Speaker 2: No, and I didn't suggest that he should be there yet.
- 4:17Speaker 2: What's interesting is a year ago Kai he was a
- 4:20Speaker 2: guy that everyone was disappointed in. Right, the national media
- 4:23Speaker 2: didn't take the time to look at the prince of
- 4:25Speaker 2: darkness who had been here in twenty twenty one, right,
- 4:28Speaker 2: and what he had nearly done to this kid. So
- 4:31Speaker 2: now all of a sudden to see it just dramatically
- 4:34Speaker 2: change one hundred and eighty degrees, if you will, from
- 4:36Speaker 2: the start of camp last year to the start of
- 4:38Speaker 2: camp this year is amazing.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Right, It's good to have good buzz, right, we always
- 4:47Speaker 1: it's always when it's the other way around, that's not great.
- 4:50Speaker 1: When it's a high expectation they're not delivering. But now
- 4:52Speaker 1: it's kind of like, oh, well, we kind of maybe
- 4:54Speaker 1: wrote that off or weren't thinking about it. Now it's
- 4:57Speaker 1: like the way they finished the last season. Now people
- 4:58Speaker 1: are thinking about it different way in terms of these
- 5:01Speaker 1: aren't the same old Jacks.
- 5:02Speaker 2: If you go back and look at the last nine
- 5:03Speaker 2: games of last year, fifteen touchdowns and two interceptions, his
- 5:08Speaker 2: completion percentage was seventy five point five percent, which led
- 5:11Speaker 2: all quarterbacks during that time, and his quarterback rating was
- 5:14Speaker 2: one o four point six That over those nine weeks
- 5:17Speaker 2: was the highest quarterback efficiency rating in the league. So
- 5:21Speaker 2: over the second half of the season, and John, you
- 5:22Speaker 2: mentioned that he really had one half of one season
- 5:26Speaker 2: that you could look at and go that was the
- 5:27Speaker 2: elite stuff. The numbers back it up. It was elite stuff.
- 5:30Speaker 2: He earned the buzz that he is getting right now,
- 5:33Speaker 2: and we're out there watching him every day and the
- 5:35Speaker 2: national media have been through and now we're getting a
- 5:37Speaker 2: look at him with the weapons with another season in
- 5:39Speaker 2: the offense.
- 5:40Speaker 3: It is.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It's a good buzz. John.
- 5:43Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no reason to think that he won't be
- 5:46Speaker 3: there at the end, but meaning among the elite group.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But you have to do it for seventeen games. He
- 5:54Speaker 3: has to up to him assistant, and that's the storyline
- 5:57Speaker 3: this year.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It will be up to Trevor to prove it he does.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Rick Meyer, if you recall all the way back in
- 6:02Speaker 2: the early nineties, was the AFC rookie or the offensive
- 6:05Speaker 2: rookie of the year with the Seattle Seahawks and was
- 6:08Speaker 2: a terrible bust three years later. So I get your point.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Not gonna happen here though, So never mind, We're gonna
- 6:13Speaker 1: move to our big thing. Number two is reps.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Now.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Trevor talked a little bit. We had that in our
- 6:17Speaker 1: last show about he likes to be out there in
- 6:19Speaker 1: the preseason get the feel of a real game. And
- 6:21Speaker 1: Doug came out on NFL Network during his interview to
- 6:25Speaker 1: say that we will see the starters a little bit
- 6:27Speaker 1: on Saturday in Dallas.
- 6:29Speaker 4: You know, I'm a big believer in the starters playing,
- 6:32Speaker 4: and I really feel like they need to feel sort
- 6:35Speaker 4: of that energy that comes with that comes with starting
- 6:38Speaker 4: a football game. And so I did it last year,
- 6:40Speaker 4: you know, with the guys, and anticipate right now, We're
- 6:43Speaker 4: still a few days away, but anticipating I'm getting you know,
- 6:45Speaker 4: maybe a series or two, you know, this weekend. And
- 6:49Speaker 4: you know, we're still in that evaluation mode. As you know,
- 6:51Speaker 4: we got a lot of young players that we need
- 6:52Speaker 4: to evaluate. So they're also going to get a lot
- 6:55Speaker 4: of time, you know, in this football game. But right now,
- 6:58Speaker 4: I anticipate our starters playing, you know, playing a little bit,
- 7:00Speaker 4: at least getting a series or two in this game.
- 7:03Speaker 1: See, the quarterbacks are on the same page, and by
- 7:05Speaker 1: that I mean Trevor Lawrence and former quarterback Doug Peterson.
- 7:08Speaker 1: What's the ideal amount of time we see Trevor in
- 7:10Speaker 1: this game on Saturday?
- 7:12Speaker 3: Oh, I wou'd say two series, if the first series
- 7:19Speaker 3: is eight plays in a touchdown, one series, just enough
- 7:23Speaker 3: to where you don't overdo this. But I think there
- 7:27Speaker 3: are coaches and maybe dougs like this. If you get
- 7:30Speaker 3: a good one in, then get him out. If you
- 7:33Speaker 3: get two clunkers, then you say, well, you had your chance.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Let's go wrap it up next week. You know, let's
- 7:39Speaker 3: go do it again next week. I'm not going to
- 7:40Speaker 3: leave you out there for five to get you hurt.
- 7:43Speaker 3: But I think plays twelve.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, he had twelve past attempts in the
- 7:50Speaker 2: game against the Browns here last year, so that seems right,
- 7:53Speaker 2: and you build towards next week where he'll play the
- 7:55Speaker 2: first half and maybe the first series or the third quarter,
- 7:58Speaker 2: and that'll be it for him in the preses. And
- 8:00Speaker 2: so a little bit of work to get warmed up for.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Detroit is echo for all the first string starters. Do
- 8:05Speaker 1: you feel like some position groups may need a little
- 8:08Speaker 1: more time out there? What do you look at at
- 8:10Speaker 1: this point in the preseason.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I think you might give the offensive line some more
- 8:13Speaker 2: time because you are working through I mean, you've got
- 8:16Speaker 2: play cancer is going to start for Shatley and little
- 8:18Speaker 2: is in it left tackle, and obviously Anton Harrison's there,
- 8:21Speaker 2: so and you might want to give CJ. Bether a
- 8:24Speaker 2: running start with the first team line. I could see
- 8:26Speaker 2: the first team line playing more than two series.
- 8:27Speaker 3: It sounded from what Doug said this morning meeting with
- 8:30Speaker 3: the media that the veteran starters will all play about
- 8:38Speaker 3: the same So I would expect that to be that number.
- 8:40Speaker 3: We're talking about twelve plays just two series, depend on
- 8:44Speaker 3: how it goes. But then he mentioned Anton Harrison could
- 8:47Speaker 3: play a little bit more. I think the rookies who
- 8:50Speaker 3: expect to contribute will get a lot of that second
- 8:54Speaker 3: or a second and third series through the middle of
- 8:57Speaker 3: the third quarter type thing. But he may be the
- 9:00Speaker 3: only guy who really fits into that. Harrison, Bigsby, guys
- 9:04Speaker 3: like that could I expect to expect Bigsby, for example,
- 9:08Speaker 3: to get some work with the ones, because it seems
- 9:10Speaker 3: like you want to work that in a little.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Bit, which is why you'd leave them in a little
- 9:13Speaker 2: bit longer.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Yeah, so then you leave the rookies in a little
- 9:15Speaker 3: bit longer.
- 9:16Speaker 1: All right, moving on to big thing three. Touch on
- 9:19Speaker 1: this in a little bit as well. So we have
- 9:21Speaker 1: that unofficial depth chart which doesn't mean a ton because
- 9:24Speaker 1: a lot of it just looks very similar to last year.
- 9:26Speaker 1: There were a couple of notes that we do want
- 9:27Speaker 1: to bring up just if you haven't had a chance
- 9:29Speaker 1: to look at it yet. Right now, we have Blake
- 9:32Speaker 1: Hants is going to be in it left guard. That's
- 9:33Speaker 1: because Tyler Shatley has not been cleared to play yet,
- 9:36Speaker 1: and Anton Harrison, as you mentioned, is going to be
- 9:38Speaker 1: starting at right tackle. Did Doug say whether or not
- 9:40Speaker 1: he was going to be playing like full go, because
- 9:43Speaker 1: we've seen him help out a little bit and perhaps.
- 9:45Speaker 3: What Doug said he'll play, And as I said, he
- 9:48Speaker 3: actually specified that he could play a little longer than
- 9:50Speaker 3: the starter, So it sounds like he's he's back.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Getting set up for next week in Detroit, right. I mean,
- 9:56Speaker 2: that's where you're really going to show up, and we're
- 9:58Speaker 2: going to talk about that a lot next week. But
- 9:59Speaker 2: that's where you want to get a lot of really
- 10:01Speaker 2: good work in. It's where the starters will get their
- 10:03Speaker 2: most valuable work in of the entire preseason.
- 10:06Speaker 1: We talked about our at this at the broadcast meeting
- 10:08Speaker 1: yesterday and there were some differing opinions. Tony Miscelli and
- 10:12Speaker 1: some of the other people were trying to decide whether
- 10:14Speaker 1: we see the starters mostly in Detroit or mostly against Miami.
- 10:18Speaker 1: I think Tony thought some of them would play more
- 10:20Speaker 1: in Miami, but most of us thought you'd see him
- 10:22Speaker 1: more in Detroit. What do you guys think in terms
- 10:25Speaker 1: of starters.
- 10:26Speaker 3: In the trend that would if if that's the case,
- 10:29Speaker 3: would be the first time Tony was ever wrong.
- 10:32Speaker 1: Oh, don't make me misquote him now, I'm scared of misremembering.
- 10:35Speaker 3: So, uh, yeah, I would expect them to play mostly
- 10:39Speaker 3: in Detroit and then not play against Miami.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But oh yeah, here's the difference. What are we three
- 10:46Speaker 2: seasons now to three preseason games and you learn, Yeah,
- 10:49Speaker 2: you have two weeks between the preseason finale and the
- 10:53Speaker 2: regular season opener. So if you wanted to get a
- 10:57Speaker 2: little bit of work in.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Again, still have a full break before.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Yeah, there's still two weeks to get guys, you know,
- 11:02Speaker 2: ready to go. So I guess what I'm saying is, John,
- 11:05Speaker 2: when you and I started in this thing, there was
- 11:07Speaker 2: a definite rhythm every year too.
- 11:09Speaker 3: There's also four games and different was a different deal.
- 11:14Speaker 2: But now it's kind of changing every year. Well, coaches
- 11:19Speaker 2: is a hard spot.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Coaches in general don't like making their own decisions on this.
- 11:25Speaker 3: They like following the league trend because it's safe and
- 11:28Speaker 3: just like most people. So, I think what we're seeing
- 11:31Speaker 3: now is the process. We're three years into it. We're
- 11:35Speaker 3: seeing the process of league think trying to take hold.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Meaning what's everybody else doing?
- 11:43Speaker 5: Oh?
- 11:43Speaker 2: It is Bill Belichick in twenty eleven in the preseason
- 11:46Speaker 2: finale against this team in New England, where he sat
- 11:48Speaker 2: every one of his starters on both sides of the ball,
- 11:51Speaker 2: and since then, the third or the last preseason game
- 11:54Speaker 2: has been in consequential for starters.
- 11:57Speaker 1: Bill Belichick making the trends that what you're.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Saying, He made it easy for those guys to do
- 12:02Speaker 2: their thing because Jack came out that night and do
- 12:04Speaker 2: the exact same thing.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Set all all set too. Yeah, all right, Looking forward,
- 12:07Speaker 1: we got a lot more coming up. We're gonna get
- 12:09Speaker 1: a peek at training camp. The tight ends are getting
- 12:11Speaker 1: in there and getting things done, and that'll be a
- 12:14Speaker 1: fun group for us to watch. We'll keep an eye
- 12:16Speaker 1: on things and we'll be right back with more here
- 12:17Speaker 1: on jags am. Welcome back to jags am. Price dot
- 12:29Speaker 1: Com is the easiest way to save money with comparison
- 12:31Speaker 1: shopping cash back coupons all in one, it's free. Tryprice
- 12:35Speaker 1: dot com today. What day is it? Wednesday, August ninth,
- 12:40Speaker 1: the mosing track of days. At this point, I think
- 12:42Speaker 1: we're on day twelve training camp.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Today is day twelve, and hey, tomorrow is the thirteenth
- 12:46Speaker 2: practice in the end of open practice.
- 12:50Speaker 1: Open practice, and then we have games and soon enough
- 12:52Speaker 1: the season will be here. This is all good things.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Players are out there right now. We're gonna go over
- 12:57Speaker 1: the fifty three. That's where we look at players that
- 12:59Speaker 1: are maybe on the bubble of this team, or players
- 13:01Speaker 1: that need to have a really good training camp if
- 13:03Speaker 1: they want to have a spot, a meaningful place on
- 13:07Speaker 1: this team. As the fifty three begin, we are going
- 13:11Speaker 1: to start with John today. Who did you pick for
- 13:14Speaker 1: the fifty three and who are you looking at to
- 13:16Speaker 1: make a difference for themselves in training camp?
- 13:19Speaker 3: Well, I went to Blake Canson. I don't think the
- 13:21Speaker 3: fact that he's never one in the depth chart means
- 13:23Speaker 3: that he's the guy that, if all things being equal,
- 13:26Speaker 3: would start at left guard.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Right. That's what we mean by the depth chart being
- 13:29Speaker 1: kind of where it's at right now.
- 13:31Speaker 3: But for right now he's there. And I think what's
- 13:34Speaker 3: significant there is you've got Ben Barts, who I think,
- 13:38Speaker 3: when healthy, will come back and be that guy. And
- 13:40Speaker 3: then I think Shatt will go back to being the
- 13:42Speaker 3: swing guy when he becomes healthy. But you need guys
- 13:49Speaker 3: in this league who can be your ninth tenth up
- 13:54Speaker 3: and down from the practice squad guy there if you
- 13:57Speaker 3: need it. And on the offensive line, those guys are very,
- 13:59Speaker 3: very import because if you get an injury or two,
- 14:02Speaker 3: all of a sudden, you look up and that guy's
- 14:04Speaker 3: protecting Trevor Lawrence.
- 14:06Speaker 5: Yep.
- 14:06Speaker 3: It certainly seems like out of the abyss that is
- 14:10Speaker 3: the backup offensive lineman, Blake Hants has become the guy
- 14:15Speaker 3: that they feel like, Okay, we can rely on this
- 14:18Speaker 3: in a pinch. And I think if he's not on
- 14:20Speaker 3: the fifty three, I think he's one of those ten
- 14:25Speaker 3: that becomes very important with the practice squad more and
- 14:29Speaker 3: more Brian being being an extension of the roster without
- 14:32Speaker 3: a doubt.
- 14:33Speaker 2: And I think you mentioned I was looking something up
- 14:34Speaker 2: that he's a guy who has played left hand right,
- 14:36Speaker 2: He can play tackle if you need.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Yeah, So he's a versatile guy and well, he's also
- 14:41Speaker 3: been He's also been around a minute. It's difficult for
- 14:47Speaker 3: rookie free agent offensive lineman to catch on and be
- 14:51Speaker 3: a legitimate seventh guy in your rotation. He's been in camps.
- 14:57Speaker 3: He came into the league in nineteen, so he's more
- 15:00Speaker 3: a grown man with a few years experience, a few
- 15:02Speaker 3: years around the league. Those are usually the guys that
- 15:05Speaker 3: you wants that emergency.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Gay versatility on the offensive line is immeasurable, and to
- 15:10Speaker 1: have the depth that they have on this team, that's
- 15:12Speaker 1: very fortunate. I don't think they're going to go to
- 15:14Speaker 1: waste with that and keep as many as they can.
- 15:15Speaker 2: Right we're seeing it right now. I mean the ability
- 15:17Speaker 2: to plug him in because you're on your essential your
- 15:19Speaker 2: third left guard. Chatley was the backup and Ben Bartch
- 15:23Speaker 2: goes down. Now you've got hands you've got to put in.
- 15:25Speaker 2: You know, Cam Robinson goes down. Last year they put
- 15:27Speaker 2: Walker Little in, and now Cam suspended, Walker Little needs
- 15:30Speaker 2: to play. I mean, it's the versatility issue, and it
- 15:33Speaker 2: goes back to Phil Rauscher and what a good young
- 15:36Speaker 2: line coach he is.
- 15:37Speaker 1: We complained about a lot of things, but we can't
- 15:39Speaker 1: like normally, if you have that kind of injury on
- 15:41Speaker 1: your offensive line, you're in a lot of trouble. But
- 15:43Speaker 1: fortunately for us, they're able to deep group is a
- 15:46Speaker 1: very deep group. So that's a strong suit for this team. Brian,
- 15:50Speaker 1: who do you have for your player for the fifty
- 15:52Speaker 1: three US?
- 15:52Speaker 2: Well, I'm going with you, Sir Abdullah. You know, third
- 15:56Speaker 2: day of the draft pick pass rusher, which everyone is
- 15:59Speaker 2: focused on. And I know that there's a lot of
- 16:01Speaker 2: angst now that Justin Houston has signed, and there are
- 16:05Speaker 2: visits Jami Clowney's in Baltimore today and people are throwing
- 16:08Speaker 2: their hands up. So you and I were looking at
- 16:10Speaker 2: the numbers yesterday. The Jaguars had thirty five sacks, half
- 16:15Speaker 2: of what the Eagles had, who led the league, and
- 16:17Speaker 2: the Jaguars were twenty fifth. Let me throw a number
- 16:19Speaker 2: at you though, and this is from the Cowboys last year.
- 16:22Speaker 2: The Dallas Cowboys led the league in pressures right, impacting
- 16:25Speaker 2: the quarterback two hundred and seventy one times. Do you
- 16:28Speaker 2: know who was where the Jaguars come.
- 16:30Speaker 3: In pretty high, really high.
- 16:32Speaker 2: They just weren't two hundred and fifty three third, which
- 16:36Speaker 2: means that the Jaguars got good pressure in the quarterback.
- 16:39Speaker 2: Last year they didn't finish, so we're expecting that from
- 16:42Speaker 2: Trayvon Walker. We hope we see that this year in
- 16:45Speaker 2: a varied defense. Josh Allen alluded to that calebon Chay
- 16:49Speaker 2: Sun's going to have a chance.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Right.
- 16:51Speaker 2: I haven't seen a lot from him on the training
- 16:53Speaker 2: camp field, but your syre of Duel is going to
- 16:55Speaker 2: have an opportunity in these preseason games to see if
- 16:58Speaker 2: he can become that third guy. He was a prolific
- 17:01Speaker 2: pass rusher at Louisville to get twenty two or twenty
- 17:03Speaker 2: three sacks in two seasons there where he was a starter.
- 17:07Speaker 2: They need a third pass rusher, a change it up guy.
- 17:10Speaker 2: And remember he's one of those do a lot of
- 17:13Speaker 2: things guys on defense because he's not just unique and Gockway.
- 17:17Speaker 2: For all of his pass rush prowess, say that three
- 17:20Speaker 2: times fast, no, okay. For all that he could do
- 17:24Speaker 2: rushing the passer going forward, he was a non factor
- 17:27Speaker 2: against the run. He was an effort guy, but he
- 17:29Speaker 2: couldn't hold up against the run. This is a guy
- 17:31Speaker 2: who can which allows Mike Caldwell to do some different
- 17:34Speaker 2: things with him. Bob Sutton and Mike to sit up
- 17:37Speaker 2: late at night on Tuesdays and scheme away to get
- 17:40Speaker 2: him into the game plan. So I'm watching him really
- 17:43Speaker 2: closely this week and against Dallas because they really need
- 17:47Speaker 2: a young guy to come through, whether it's him or.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Caleb On and change is necessary. Josh Allen himself is
- 17:51Speaker 1: saying they're getting different play calls going in practice and
- 17:53Speaker 1: what they're doing in training camp. He hopes transitions into
- 17:56Speaker 1: the games because obviously they struggled with the pass rush
- 17:58Speaker 1: last year and he's hoping that the changes will stick.
- 18:01Speaker 2: So just to connect a couple things real quick. Third
- 18:04Speaker 2: most pressures two hundred and fifty three right, Kansas City
- 18:07Speaker 2: was second to two fifty five twenty five takeaways, fifth
- 18:11Speaker 2: most in the league. The Jaguars are close, right, I
- 18:15Speaker 2: mean they're close in Samirius last year. Can they get
- 18:18Speaker 2: back to this level but top it off and increase
- 18:20Speaker 2: the sacks?
- 18:21Speaker 1: And they have to. I will touch on another thing
- 18:24Speaker 1: with the sr of Duela. He obviously came out there.
- 18:26Speaker 1: You know, he's underside this, that and the other. He
- 18:29Speaker 1: just seems like he gets it. And I say this
- 18:32Speaker 1: from other people's points of view as well, not just
- 18:34Speaker 1: my own, but Jeff Logman was talking about it as well.
- 18:36Speaker 1: He just has the moves, like if something doesn't work,
- 18:38Speaker 1: he switches so quickly and just comprehends it in a
- 18:41Speaker 1: way that not everybody does. Other people have the sheer size,
- 18:44Speaker 1: maybe they look the part, but the asier has been
- 18:47Speaker 1: so quick on the uptake that he sees him as
- 18:49Speaker 1: someone that could definitely make an impact.
- 18:51Speaker 2: John, I don't know if people have had a chance
- 18:52Speaker 2: to see it, because the pass rush is so far
- 18:54Speaker 2: away from the stands here and it's generally way over
- 18:57Speaker 2: in a corner where we're not able to access. You
- 19:00Speaker 2: see fifty six a lot. You see him. Yep, he pops.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I don't know that he's always winning, but you see
- 19:05Speaker 2: fifty six.
- 19:06Speaker 3: And if you pop as a rookie just a little bit,
- 19:11Speaker 3: then you usually come on and you're better as time
- 19:14Speaker 3: goes on, because you don't know anything right now if
- 19:15Speaker 3: you're a rookie. So that's always encouraging. Just one final
- 19:20Speaker 3: point in the defense before we move on. There's sort
- 19:24Speaker 3: of a perception among Jaguars fans and maybe I fall
- 19:28Speaker 3: into it too. Oh, the offense is good around here,
- 19:31Speaker 3: in the defense is bad. Like that's sort of what
- 19:34Speaker 3: every ozone question is sort of predicated on that they
- 19:39Speaker 3: were actually tired for fourth in the league in takeaways
- 19:42Speaker 3: last year and twelfth in points allowed, with a first
- 19:47Speaker 3: year coordinator and every starter. The only guy they lost
- 19:51Speaker 3: is arden Key, and everybody's sort of gnash teeth about that,
- 19:54Speaker 3: and they didn't want to lose arden but he's the
- 19:56Speaker 3: only guy they lost. Well, you can look at that
- 19:59Speaker 3: two ways, whether he didn't make it improvements or I
- 20:02Speaker 3: get that. Continuity is not as talked about on offense
- 20:06Speaker 3: as I mean on defense as it is an offense,
- 20:08Speaker 3: but it matters, and Josh Allen sure thinks they're going
- 20:11Speaker 3: to be better because of continuity. So I don't think
- 20:16Speaker 3: this defense is going to be a top three defense
- 20:18Speaker 3: that you remember as one of the great defenses of
- 20:21Speaker 3: all time. But if it's healthy, I certainly think that
- 20:24Speaker 3: it can improve enough to compliment what could be a
- 20:28Speaker 3: very good offense.
- 20:29Speaker 1: So I wonder if all the shutdown defense is necessary.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Well, you like to say fans fan an angst is
- 20:38Speaker 2: part of being a fan as you look at your team,
- 20:40Speaker 2: So there's going to be some of that real quick.
- 20:42Speaker 2: We focus so much on the front right because everyone
- 20:44Speaker 2: wants the sack, the strip that kind of thing. But
- 20:47Speaker 2: on the back end last year, Darius Williams was fourth
- 20:50Speaker 2: in the league, tied for fourth with sixteen passes defense.
- 20:52Speaker 2: By the way, Sauce Gardner led the league at twenty
- 20:55Speaker 2: so not that far off right, and Tyson Campbell was
- 20:58Speaker 2: one behind in fifth place for with fifteen and together
- 21:04Speaker 2: they were the most productive cornerback tandem in terms of
- 21:07Speaker 2: breaking up passes. And by the way, you can say
- 21:09Speaker 2: the same for the safeties Rayshawn Jenkins and Andre Cisco,
- 21:12Speaker 2: who had a combined twenty two and were first and
- 21:14Speaker 2: third among safeties breaking up passes. So the point being,
- 21:19Speaker 2: the back end was pretty good last year, late better
- 21:23Speaker 2: than early. You talk about continuity upfront, they're talking about
- 21:26Speaker 2: continuity of the secondary.
- 21:27Speaker 3: They are.
- 21:28Speaker 1: For my pick for the fifty three, we're gonna switch
- 21:30Speaker 1: to offense really quick. I just want to touch on
- 21:31Speaker 1: this a little bit because we've been hearing his name
- 21:33Speaker 1: so often. Kevin Austin junior, Kevin Austin was on the
- 21:36Speaker 1: practice squad last year. He's someone that's really taking advantage
- 21:39Speaker 1: of the opportunities he's had in camp. You know, his
- 21:42Speaker 1: names come up with Trevor, his name's come up with
- 21:44Speaker 1: Doug and I feel like when you're you know, we
- 21:45Speaker 1: can make our observations, but when you're hearing it from
- 21:47Speaker 1: you know, press sailor from Doug and they're noting them
- 21:50Speaker 1: as a person that they're noticing, that's a good sign
- 21:52Speaker 1: for you.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Yeah. I wonder for Kevin, he really has shown up.
- 21:58Speaker 3: I wonder if he won't have to be a practice
- 22:02Speaker 3: squad guy one more year, not that he hasn't improved,
- 22:05Speaker 3: but only because they still like Tim Jones. Yeah, you're
- 22:09Speaker 3: deep there. You have Parker Washington who's making the team.
- 22:12Speaker 3: So I think it's a good thing. All of a sudden,
- 22:14Speaker 3: this is a deep team where you're having trouble finding
- 22:17Speaker 3: a spot for a kid who probably deserves a spot.
- 22:19Speaker 2: Bro, I'll give you two other guys, Seth Williams from
- 22:22Speaker 2: Auburn and Jerray Jenkins from LSU. They are a year behind,
- 22:27Speaker 2: right because Kevin Austin has improved, but they're big, tall
- 22:31Speaker 2: receivers with long arms and great leaping ability. They can
- 22:33Speaker 2: high point the ball. I think Kevin Austin's a really
- 22:36Speaker 2: intriguing player because he was coming on in the practice
- 22:40Speaker 2: field last year. Late in the season. He could push
- 22:42Speaker 2: Tim Jones.
- 22:44Speaker 1: I think also, if he doesn't make the rosters you mentioned,
- 22:46Speaker 1: he might be someone else. Someone else picks up and
- 22:48Speaker 1: has a spot for Maybe they're not as deep at
- 22:50Speaker 1: wide receiver as the Jaguars are and they give him
- 22:52Speaker 1: a chance.
- 22:53Speaker 2: Wide receivers and linebackers are contributors on special teams. So
- 22:57Speaker 2: let's see what he does in Dallas on Saturday night
- 22:59Speaker 2: on spot. That's going to be the differentiating factor for
- 23:02Speaker 2: the sixth spot.
- 23:03Speaker 1: We're all wondering what Doug Peterson is going to do
- 23:05Speaker 1: in terms of starters on Saturday. We will see how
- 23:08Speaker 1: long they are out there. He's running practice today, he's
- 23:10Speaker 1: got the visor on, He's ready to go for training camp.
- 23:13Speaker 1: We'll keep an eye on things. We got a little
- 23:15Speaker 1: bit more coming up on jags Am after the break.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Welcome back to jags Am. We are presented by Field's
- 23:22Speaker 1: Auto Group, Jacksonville. Step up to Luxury Fields Auto dot Com.
- 23:26Speaker 1: We are in the Hyundai studios for you today. Trevor
- 23:28Speaker 1: getting some work in as we get one of the
- 23:31Speaker 1: last Well, I guess more than tense practices were earlier
- 23:34Speaker 1: this week. These are a little more run through ESQ
- 23:36Speaker 1: before we get to preseason game on Saturday, We're going
- 23:39Speaker 1: to look around the league. There's some stuff going on.
- 23:41Speaker 1: Justin Houston signing with the Panthers earlier this week, again
- 23:45Speaker 1: another pass rusher. We talk about it ad nauseum. They
- 23:48Speaker 1: have not brought in a new big name to try
- 23:50Speaker 1: to help their own pass rush. Is there anyone left
- 23:53Speaker 1: out there that you guys would be interested in bringing
- 23:55Speaker 1: in at this point.
- 23:56Speaker 2: They're all in their early thirties. I'm melvin Ingram in
- 23:59Speaker 2: Miami last week year had ten sacks. Right. Robert Quinn
- 24:02Speaker 2: was a very productive pass rusher for years, but last
- 24:05Speaker 2: year did nothing in Philly. Both are thirty three. If
- 24:09Speaker 2: you want one of those guys.
- 24:11Speaker 3: Yeah, I haven't followed this as much as fans have
- 24:15Speaker 3: because I just don't have a feeling that they're that
- 24:19Speaker 3: interested in it. Meaning the Jaguars aren't that interesting. So
- 24:24Speaker 3: I think they believe that they have young guys who
- 24:27Speaker 3: as a group can get pressure, and I think overall
- 24:32Speaker 3: they look at that stat Brian throughout his team got
- 24:35Speaker 3: pressure on the passer last year. They just can't get sacks,
- 24:37Speaker 3: got great pressure. I have said for months, I don't
- 24:40Speaker 3: think they see this as the same crisis.
- 24:43Speaker 2: No, that observers did no, and you don't want to
- 24:45Speaker 2: go throw a lot of money at a thirty three
- 24:46Speaker 2: year old in wonder you know if Melvin got ten
- 24:49Speaker 2: sacks in Miami, does he have that? Here's what you
- 24:51Speaker 2: got going for you this year. I think Roy Robertson Harris.
- 24:54Speaker 2: At the end of last year, John really came on.
- 24:56Speaker 2: He was a dominant factor in games in New York
- 24:59Speaker 2: and against the Chargers.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Here.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Devon Hamilton, who didn't start camp on the practice field,
- 25:04Speaker 2: has been pushing guys around in the middle right. Talk
- 25:08Speaker 2: about creating sack opportunities. When the quarterback can't stand in
- 25:11Speaker 2: the pocket. Guys like Josh and tray Von or Kaylevon
- 25:14Speaker 2: or you see her are going to be able to
- 25:16Speaker 2: hunt on the edges because the quarterback is looking. So
- 25:19Speaker 2: there's a lot of reasons to believe that they will
- 25:21Speaker 2: get over the top this year. Of course, people an't
- 25:23Speaker 2: gonna believe it until they see it.
- 25:25Speaker 3: Be better against the run, get in better pass rushing
- 25:28Speaker 3: situations on third down, get leads, and get pass rushing
- 25:32Speaker 3: situations late in the game. It's not just to that's
- 25:35Speaker 3: usually where good him And why did the Eagles have
- 25:38Speaker 3: seventy sacks because they were ahead all the time, and
- 25:41Speaker 3: I got sacks late in the game. I'm assume I
- 25:43Speaker 3: haven't looked at this. That's usually the formula. Teams that
- 25:46Speaker 3: have leads are often good pass rushing teams, and.
- 25:49Speaker 1: That's where we want to be at, playing with big
- 25:50Speaker 1: leads and letting the defense go off and do what they.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Need to do.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Another look around the league. We talked a little bit
- 25:55Speaker 1: about The Quarterback Show on Netflix earlier this week, but
- 25:58Speaker 1: Hard Knocks is back on HBO last night. I don't
- 26:01Speaker 1: know if you guys got a chance to check it out.
- 26:03Speaker 1: I stayed up late to check it out. I stayed
- 26:05Speaker 1: up late because and he gets here so early for
- 26:07Speaker 1: training camp, so I feel like it's score lot like
- 26:08Speaker 1: I stay up late to watch it. But Aaron Rodgers
- 26:11Speaker 1: is just interesting in every facet of the game. Did
- 26:15Speaker 1: you get a chance to check it out? Brent?
- 26:17Speaker 2: I saw little bits and pieces of it. I had
- 26:18Speaker 2: chaos going at my house last night. I saw the
- 26:20Speaker 2: bit with Sauce Gardner graduating. I really I like him
- 26:24Speaker 2: a lot. I spent some time with him in Las
- 26:26Speaker 2: Vegas last year before the draft. Uh So I focused
- 26:29Speaker 2: on him and not only is a great player, but
- 26:31Speaker 2: he's a great kid. The Rogers thing, I don't know,
- 26:35Speaker 2: he's weird to me. The Dark Tree, there was a
- 26:38Speaker 2: couple of psychedelic toad venom.
- 26:40Speaker 1: They make him a look a lot more normal, which
- 26:42Speaker 1: I believe he is on the inside, a little bit
- 26:44Speaker 1: more normal than he might come across. But there's a
- 26:46Speaker 1: couple of things where they're at the Hall of Fame
- 26:48Speaker 1: game and he's talking to Sauce Gardner, and it's just
- 26:50Speaker 1: like the age difference is so it's it's adorable. It's
- 26:53Speaker 1: really like them trying to have a conversation, like a
- 26:55Speaker 1: kid talking to his dad. Sometimes it's just like there's
- 26:57Speaker 1: something lost in translation there.
- 26:59Speaker 3: I like because I'm always fascinated by how much having
- 27:04Speaker 3: so much money will allow people to go in terms
- 27:08Speaker 3: of personality something else. So I've always liked Aaron Rodgers.
- 27:12Speaker 3: I like somebody who kind of says whatever he thinks,
- 27:14Speaker 3: and I love his own thing. I didn't see that
- 27:17Speaker 3: version of Hard Knocks. I don't know how much I'll
- 27:18Speaker 3: watch it. I'm not a huge Hard Knocks guy, but
- 27:23Speaker 3: people like it. I'm fine with it. I turned it
- 27:24Speaker 3: on IM just glad it's not here because you.
- 27:26Speaker 2: And I talked about watching it so we could talk
- 27:28Speaker 2: about it on the show. But I just I'm like John,
- 27:32Speaker 2: I kind of a hard time watching other teams because
- 27:33Speaker 2: we live it every day.
- 27:34Speaker 1: This is true, although it's a good thing that they
- 27:36Speaker 1: we don't qualify for Hard Knocks as of right now
- 27:39Speaker 1: because the team is good. You know, if you have
- 27:40Speaker 1: a winning record, you don't have to be on the show.
- 27:42Speaker 1: They made the Jets be on the the NFL made
- 27:44Speaker 1: the Jets be on the show. So it's a good
- 27:46Speaker 1: thing for us that we're trending upwards.
- 27:48Speaker 2: There's probably well someone watching this who remembers Jaguar Summer
- 27:52Speaker 2: that was non HBO. It was NFL Network in two
- 27:56Speaker 2: thousand and four. They embedded their cameras with us and
- 27:58Speaker 2: spent the entire summer here and did Jaguar Summer, which
- 28:02Speaker 2: was Hard Knocks in a year that they didn't have
- 28:03Speaker 2: Hard Knocks on HBO.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Oh, I'll have to go look for the throwback. That
- 28:06Speaker 1: sounds interesting.
- 28:07Speaker 2: I think the most interesting part was Chris Fuamatu Mafala.
- 28:10Speaker 2: There's another one to say three times, uh, the the
- 28:12Speaker 2: Samoan running back from Utah who did a flaming torch
- 28:17Speaker 2: dance at a club barbecue out at Hannah Park one night.
- 28:24Speaker 2: It was exhilarating to watch.
- 28:26Speaker 3: All right, we go. There's a reason to look at
- 28:28Speaker 3: that up.
- 28:28Speaker 1: If you guys like reality, behind the behind the scenes
- 28:31Speaker 1: sort of things, definitely want to check that out. We

- 29:34Speaker 1: So we don't have quarterbacks on Netflix with Trevor Lawrence,
