- 0:01Good morning and a warm welcome to your show,
- 0:04Sunny Mornings in Boston. I'm your host, Melissa,
- 0:09and it's Friday, May 22nd. You'll be interested
- 0:13to know, 120 years ago, today in 1906, the Wright
- 0:20brothers were granted a patent for their flying
- 0:22machine, formally recognizing their controlled,
- 0:25powered heavier -than -air flight, and the practical
- 0:28design they had developed. That legal recognition
- 0:31affirmed their inventive achievement and helped
- 0:34launch modern aviation by protecting the design
- 0:37and encouraging engineers and pilots to build
- 0:40on that milestone. So now you know. And now,
- 0:45it's time for the weather report. This morning,

- 2:45to tell them. Sunny Morning sends you. In local
- 2:50news, in Boston, a small monument near the carousel
- 2:54on Boston Common commemorates what historians
- 2:57consider one of the earliest organized football
- 2:59clubs in the United States, the Oneida Football
- 3:02Club, which played between 1862 and 1865 during
- 3:07the Civil War era. The inscription on the monument
- 3:11claims it was the first organized football club
- 3:14in the U .S., noting that the Oneida goal was
- 3:17never crossed. Authors Kevin Tallack -Marston
- 3:20and Mike Cronin explore this history in their
- 3:23book, Inventing the Boston Game, Football, Soccer,
- 3:27and the Origins of a National Myth. They emphasize
- 3:31that soccer culture thrived in immigrant communities,
- 3:34despite receiving little national attention.
- 3:37As Van Johan Romero points out, understanding
- 3:40stories like the Oneida Club can help Americans
- 3:43connect more deeply with the sport ahead of the
- 3:46FIFA World Cup. Now on to sports. Reigning National
- 3:56Football League most valuable player Matthew
- 3:59Stafford parlayed one of the best seasons of
- 4:02his stellar career into a lucrative contract
- 4:04extension. The Los Angeles Rams announced Thursday
- 4:08they signed their quarterback to a new deal.
- 4:11According to ESPN, Stafford received a one -year
- 4:15extension worth up to $60 million in incentives.
- 4:19His contract is now a two -year deal worth up
- 4:22to $105 million. If he reaches all of his incentives,
- 4:27he will make an average of $52 .5 million per
- 4:31year. This will tie him with Justin Herbert as
- 4:35the NFL's eighth -highest paid quarterback. Stafford
- 4:39will earn $40 million, fully guaranteed in 2026.
- 4:44Securing him through 2027 ensures that Los Angeles
- 4:48makes two more Super Bowl pushes. With Stafford
- 4:52in the room for at least two more years, 2026
- 4:55first -round draft pick Ty Simpson will have
- 4:58the opportunity to learn from him. Regardless,
- 5:02keeping Stafford figures to give the Rams two
- 5:04more bites at the apple. At 37, Stafford became
- 5:08the oldest quarterback to win the MVP award after
- 5:11posting 46 passing touchdowns. and 4 ,707 yards.
- 5:17In local sports, the Red Sox are rolling. They
- 5:22swept Kansas City, outscoring the Royals 13 -5
- 5:26behind a dominant performance that had Connelly
- 5:29early pitching six and a third innings while
- 5:32striking out five. Darren Duran went two for
- 5:36five with a home run and two RBIs to lead the
- 5:39charge. Boston is now 23 -27, with momentum building
- 5:44heading into tonight against Minnesota at Fenway.
- 5:49Peyton Tall takes the mound against Connor Prelip
- 5:52at 7 -10, and this is exactly the kind of matchup
- 5:56that matters. The Red Sox have won four of five,
- 6:00and they have got real offensive life right now
- 6:03with 35 hits across that Kansas City sweep. On
- 6:08the roster front, the Sox called up hard thrower
- 6:11Tayron Guerrero, a 35 -year -old flamethrower
- 6:15who has been untouchable in AAA with a 0 .92
- 6:19era and a fastball touching 104 miles per hour.
- 6:23It is low -risk, high -reward death. Inter manager
- 6:28Chad Tracy is getting praise from within the
- 6:31organization, too. Christian Campbell said Tracy
- 6:34and Alex Cora manage similarly. They know how
- 6:38to handle a game and relate to players. Under
- 6:42Tracy, Boston has gone 12 -10 since Cora was
- 6:46let go in April. Meanwhile, the Celtics brought
- 6:50Isaiah Thomas back into the fold. The former
- 6:54All -Star is joining the front office as a pro
- 6:57and college scout. Thomas told his podcast he
- 7:02still has the itch to play. but is focusing on
- 7:04becoming a team executive long -term. In top
- 7:09news, Theo Baker's new book, How to Rule the
- 7:13World, exposes Stanford University's complex
- 7:16relationship with Silicon Valley power. As a
- 7:21reporter for the Stanford Daily, he uncovered
- 7:23research misconduct that led to the resignation
- 7:26of President Mark Tessier Levine. Baker highlights
- 7:30the culture of ambition, wealth, and influence
- 7:33on campus. He reveals that venture capitalists
- 7:36seek out Stanford students aggressively, assessing
- 7:39them for potential success. Baker's investigation
- 7:43reflects broader trends in higher education,
- 7:46revealing the connection between innovation and
- 7:49ethical issues. His candid reflections on personal
- 7:52struggles add depth to a narrative about institutional
- 7:56perfection. In business news, traders are anticipating
- 8:02a slew of tech mega initial public offerings
- 8:05will push Warren Buffett aside on their first
- 8:07day of trading. SpaceX officially filed to go
- 8:11public on the NASDAQ, while reports indicate
- 8:14OpenAI may confidentially file for an initial
- 8:17public offering soon. Traders now see a 92 %
- 8:21chance that OpenAI files this year, with a 69
- 8:25% chance for its rival, Anthropic. All are expected
- 8:29to debut at valuations exceeding $1 trillion,
- 8:32which would be record -breaking. SpaceX was valued
- 8:37at $1 trillion in February, with a 56 % chance
- 8:41of closing above $2 trillion on its first day.
- 8:45OpenAI had a previous valuation of $852 billion
- 8:50and a 65 % chance of exceeding $1 trillion. Traders
- 8:56also estimate 47 % odds that Anthropic will close
- 9:00above $1 trillion. These valuations would place
- 9:04these companies in the $1 trillion club, likely
- 9:07surpassing Berkshire Hathaway's current market
- 9:10cap. Analyst Adrian Cox noted that Berkshire
- 9:14Hathaway had over $350 billion in revenue last
- 9:18year, compared to SpaceX's $18 .7 billion. and
- 9:23OpenAI's $13 .1 billion. Despite their massive
- 9:28valuations, SpaceX and OpenAI remain unprofitable.
- 9:33The longer private stay of companies has raised
- 9:36concerns about sustaining these high valuations.
- 9:39Cox reassured investors, highlighting that the
- 9:42U .S. stock market is now worth about $70 trillion.
- 9:47In crypto movement, Bitcoin is up 1 .5 % for
- 9:52the week, to about $78 ,000. Ethereum is up 1
- 9:57% to just over 2 ,000. And XRP is down half a
- 10:02percent to $1 .37. Moving on to a more local

- 10:55Let's talk tech. Waymo has now paused service
- 10:58in four cities because its robo -taxis are struggling
- 11:02to deal with heavy rain and flooded roads, a
- 11:05problem that already prompted a recall last week.
- 11:08One of Waymo's robo -taxis was spotted driving
- 11:12through a flooded street in Atlanta, Georgia
- 11:14before it ultimately got stuck for about an hour.
- 11:18Waymo stated that safety is its top priority
- 11:21for riders and others on the road. The company
- 11:25also halted service in Dallas and Houston due
- 11:27to severe weather across Texas this week. Both
- 11:31the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
- 11:34and the National Transportation Safety Board
- 11:37are investigating incidents involving Waymo's
- 11:40robo -taxis. This British detective series has
- 11:49fans eagerly awaiting its return. Set in Cambridge,
- 11:54this adaptation of the Belgian series Professor
- 11:56T has run for four seasons, totaling 24 episodes,

- 12:24series of sudden deaths at a spa. Well, alrighty
- 12:29folks, it's time for the quote of the day. And
- 12:33today, our quote comes from the American inventor
- 12:35and aviation pioneer, Wilbur Wright. And he said,
- 12:41It is possible to fly without motors, but not
- 12:44without knowledge and skill. And that's a wrap
