Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Here on the one that got Ballox network. You know
- 0:02Speaker 1: I've been talking about accessibility to start twenty twenty six
- 0:04Speaker 1: and the MTA Accessibility newsletter and all that. Well, someone
- 0:09Speaker 1: that also has a passion for accessibility, including his parishioners
- 0:14Speaker 1: and making sure the church has accessibility for his prisoners
- 0:18Speaker 1: is doctor Joel Grossi of Commonwealth Community Baptist. And you've
- 0:23Speaker 1: heard him before here on the podcast. He has a
- 0:26Speaker 1: radio show with us one am every Monday night, every
- 0:29Speaker 1: Monday morning.
- 0:32Speaker 2: On WMCA. Well he had me on this.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Week to talk about accessibility in NYC starting out twenty
- 0:41Speaker 1: twenty six.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Take a listen.
- 0:44Speaker 3: All right, Well, I don't know if I mentioned this
- 0:46Speaker 3: last time, but park Chester in the Bronx finally got
- 0:51Speaker 3: after one hundred years, finally got an elevator and we
- 0:56Speaker 3: have accessibility now one stop from our church, which is
- 1:00Speaker 3: something that we've been praying about and waiting for and
- 1:04Speaker 3: we're so thankful for. And as again I've mentioned this before.
- 1:08Speaker 3: When I invited my dear friend Alex to visit our church,
- 1:11Speaker 3: the first question he asked me was is it accessible?
- 1:13Speaker 3: And the building is, but unfortunately the subway station is not.
- 1:17Speaker 3: And so I want to bring Alex on and get
- 1:19Speaker 3: us up to date brother on what are some of
- 1:21Speaker 3: the happenings in the world of New York City accessibility.
- 1:26Speaker 1: All right, well, first of all, doctor Joel, great to
- 1:28Speaker 1: have you back in the new year with us on
- 1:30Speaker 1: MCA and hope your new year is starting well. And
- 1:34Speaker 1: I will say there are a couple of things. Firstly,
- 1:36Speaker 1: the elevators change is a great news, and it's happening
- 1:40Speaker 1: around the other boroughs. You know, there's stuff by my
- 1:43Speaker 1: old home and Queen's on Parsons Boulevard, So elevator upgrades
- 1:47Speaker 1: are happening in twenty twenty six, which is great to see.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And then also the LR has reduced fare all throughout
- 1:55Speaker 1: the day, so if you're a person of disability that
- 1:57Speaker 1: needs to commute at all hours, you get the reduced
- 2:00Speaker 1: that makes traveling so much less stressful and affordable for
- 2:04Speaker 1: people with disabilities.
- 2:05Speaker 3: That's fantastic. And when you talk about the one by
- 2:09Speaker 3: your old house and Queens, I mean, was that also
- 2:12Speaker 3: a long long time coming and all long time?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:15Speaker 3: Why does it take so long?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Well, the funding needs to be secured and the approvals.
- 2:20Speaker 2: You know, they can't just build an elevator.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I think they gotta have city permits and other permits
- 2:25Speaker 1: to make all this happen. So it does take a
- 2:27Speaker 1: while to make all these things into fruition.
- 2:31Speaker 3: And is it the case that any new subway station
- 2:35Speaker 3: or any new building is going to automatically have these
- 2:37Speaker 3: built from the get go? Is that how it does?
- 2:39Speaker 2: That would be great.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I don't know how realistic that is, but that would
- 2:42Speaker 1: be amazing. Now, I will offer your listeners this idea
- 2:47Speaker 1: if you want to know more about the MTA news
- 2:48Speaker 1: because we all travel around the city. They have an
- 2:50Speaker 1: accessibility newsletter on the MTA website.
- 2:54Speaker 3: Okay, And is that something that you contribute to or
- 2:58Speaker 3: is that something that you're kind of you of your
- 3:00Speaker 3: finger on.
- 3:00Speaker 1: The pulse of I'm just following it because I think
- 3:03Speaker 1: it's important if I want to do a story on
- 3:05Speaker 1: my podcasts about it. It helps me stay connected for
- 3:08Speaker 1: sure to what's going on in the city for people disabilities,
- 3:11Speaker 1: traveling and accessibility.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Now, you're commuting into MCA from Long Island.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Yes, that is correct.
- 3:18Speaker 3: And is that an entirely accessible route for you or
- 3:22Speaker 3: you have to contend with some stairs and whatnot along
- 3:26Speaker 3: the way? Oh?
- 3:26Speaker 1: I mean, luckily they have elevators to the pen station
- 3:30Speaker 1: and they have up there. It's just navigating the morning
- 3:32Speaker 1: rush crowds. That's you can't fix that. That's just part
- 3:36Speaker 1: of the business. But I tell you what, since pandemic
- 3:39Speaker 1: was about six years ago, now five and a half
- 3:41Speaker 1: years ago, I'm so glad to see the crowds are
- 3:43Speaker 1: back out.
- 3:44Speaker 2: And I'm sure you see it too in your travels.
- 3:46Speaker 2: We're crowded city again.
- 3:47Speaker 3: It does feel crowded again. Yeah, and that's a good
- 3:51Speaker 3: thing and an annoying thing, but more good than annoying
- 3:53Speaker 3: because it is New York City and definitely love that
- 3:57Speaker 3: we can see that. Now, are you still on your
- 4:01Speaker 3: roller blade?
- 4:02Speaker 2: Oh?
- 4:02Speaker 1: Yes, I've been rollerblading as every day as always, so
- 4:06Speaker 1: that's always fun. And I use the bike lane sometimes,
- 4:09Speaker 1: and you know, I think traveling through the city on
- 4:13Speaker 1: my wheels just give me the sense of freedom that
- 4:16Speaker 1: every day I feel that kind of freedom.
- 4:17Speaker 3: No, it's terrific. And I kind of segue that into
- 4:20Speaker 3: I got an update about our skate park and it
- 4:23Speaker 3: is continuing to jump every hurdle and get every green
- 4:27Speaker 3: light and every stamp of approval it needs. So God
- 4:31Speaker 3: willing you and I will be out there at the
- 4:33Speaker 3: sound of you skate park rolling around on our wheels.
- 4:36Speaker 2: The rolling pastor. I really love that, Doctor Paul.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I know. Well recently I was the slamming pastor
- 4:43Speaker 3: because I ended up hanging up on a five oz
- 4:46Speaker 3: grind on this little quarter pipe and it pitched me
- 4:49Speaker 3: to the concrete. And I think concrete is harder these
- 4:53Speaker 3: days than it was when I started skating back in
- 4:56Speaker 3: the nineteen eighties. I don't know if I can prove that.
- 4:58Speaker 2: But felt harder.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I'm sure I've seen the skate evolved since the eighties.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I mean, it's a different kind of breed now. There's
- 5:04Speaker 1: more in line than anything else.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Oh, there's a.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Whole lot of varieties now. I mean, yeah, in the
- 5:08Speaker 3: eighties you had Marty McFly and you. But you know,
- 5:12Speaker 3: it's amazing you still have Tony Hawk. I mean, I
- 5:14Speaker 3: can't believe here's a guy, he's got to be pushing
- 5:18Speaker 3: sixty and he's out there doing it. We're and we're
- 5:21Speaker 3: so thankful that we've had the Tony Hawk Foundation involved
- 5:25Speaker 3: in getting our skate park up and running hopefully the
- 5:29Speaker 3: next Oh yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 2: No, he's still doing it.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It's pretty remarkable and all those video games after him
- 5:32Speaker 1: and all that. So you know, one thing you should
- 5:34Speaker 1: do on the next episode or one of these episodes,
- 5:36Speaker 1: is tell us your story how you got into radio,
- 5:39Speaker 1: how you became a pastor. I mean, maybe people don't
- 5:41Speaker 1: know your story, doctor Joel.
- 5:42Speaker 3: You know, I think that is a terrific idea, and
- 5:46Speaker 3: let me mark that down here. We're going to do that.
- 5:48Speaker 3: We got a minute left on this episode, so I
- 5:50Speaker 3: can't do it today, but Alex, thank you for coming on.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Thanks for the good insight, and we'll talk to you
- 5:54Speaker 3: again soon.
- 5:55Speaker 2: Absolutely, and your prayer work for the Giants. We got
- 5:57Speaker 2: a new head coach.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Did go okay? Well, here you go pray for the Jets.
- 6:02Speaker 3: I guess still what. In the meantime, everyone, we want
- 6:05Speaker 3: to thank you really for being part of our family
- 6:07Speaker 3: here at Walking in the Word. If you want to
- 6:10Speaker 3: contribute to our show so we can stay on the air,
- 6:13Speaker 3: you can do that through our website as well. I
- 6:16Speaker 3: can't thank you enough for the questions that come in,
- 6:18Speaker 3: people that are asking different things. We love to take
- 6:21Speaker 3: this to the airwaves, and again we're on all the
- 6:24Speaker 3: podcast platforms. You can find us on Spotify and everything else.
- 6:28Speaker 3: But we're so glad that we can be here on
- 6:31Speaker 3: WMCA once again. My name is doctor Joel Grassi. I'm
- 6:36Speaker 3: the pastor of the Commonwealth Community Baptist Church of the Bronx.
- 6:39Speaker 3: You can call us at seven Poe eight eight three
- 6:41Speaker 3: nine one thousand, or visit our website at Commonwealth Bronx
- 6:46Speaker 3: dot org. And I want to thank each and every
- 6:48Speaker 3: one of you for spending this time with me today
- 6:51Speaker 3: Walking in the Word.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I always enjoy working with doctor Joel and look forward
- 6:58Speaker 1: to our next episode and always love working with doctor Joel.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And by the way, he's now heard on Spotify, so
- 7:05Speaker 1: I'll drop the link below to all of his episodes
- 7:08Speaker 1: that we've able to get on there for him at
- 7:12Speaker 1: Walking in the Word Radio. We'll talk to you soon
- 7:15Speaker 1: here on the One Up Network. But that's how we
- 7:17Speaker 1: kick off the adapting feature of One Leg Up Alex
- 7:20Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six,
