- 0:11What's going on everybody? It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's Q&A day. Keep those questions coming in.
- 0:17If you have a question for an upcoming episode, please ask it
- 0:20down below in the comments. All you have to do is simply in
- 0:24the comments, type out your question.
- 0:26I'll add it to the list for an upcoming episode.
- 0:29Now this week we've got 6 questions, 5 responses. 2 of the
- 0:34questions are pretty similar, so I combine them.
- 0:37I'll give one response, one opinion.
- 0:40Again, that's all this is. All these are is opinions.
- 0:43I'm not telling anybody what they should or shouldn't be
- 0:46doing. I'm not telling anybody what is
- 0:49right or wrong. We're just talking cards.
- 0:51All we're doing is talking cards for sharing thoughts.
- 0:54We're asking, what do you think? What do you think?
- 0:57I think this, this is kind of how I do stuff.
- 1:01It's, it's not a big deal. This is this is not life or
- 1:05death. This is nothing worth getting
- 1:07upset about. This is nothing about worth
- 1:10getting, you know, frustrated and angered over.
- 1:13It's just simply talking. Now, there were a few things
- 1:19that happened over the weekend. I don't know.
- 1:21Did you guys see that Jeff Wilson episode?
- 1:24My goodness. He opened a pack of 1970 tops,
- 1:31and of the 10 cards, he had four duplicates.
- 1:36So eight of the cards were the same.
- 1:38Well, I mean, so four and four. So he had duplicates,
- 1:41duplicates, duplicates, duplicates.
- 1:44And he cracked it out of the PSA holder.
- 1:47And then he talks about how he's about to go over to the PSA
- 1:50booth and submit one of the Commons.
- 1:52And to me it was, it was hilarious because he's a huge
- 2:00defender of PSA. But here he just bought a pack
- 2:04that the odds of that happening are 0%, like 0%, especially
- 2:10because they came out in the same order.
- 2:12It was like 1234 and then went anyway.
- 2:15All right, I, I know the sequencing was weird back.
- 2:18All right, I'll move on. So here's here's the thing.
- 2:21Later this week I'm going to be at the happiest place on Earth.
- 2:25I'm going to be at Disneyland. I was thinking it would be fun.
- 2:28I might shoot a couple of little walk and talks as I'm in line,
- 2:34maybe have my kids or my wife hop on or something.
- 2:37I don't know. So I might post something like
- 2:40that, I don't know, early next week or this weekend, but we'll
- 2:44see. We'll see if I'm thinking about
- 2:46it and and how things are going. But I am super excited for this
- 2:49family time. So that is going to be going on.
- 2:52But I also pre recorded a couple of things for later this week.
- 2:56So Friday, Saturday, there's going to be at least one video,
- 3:00probably 2 that are going to come out later in the week even
- 3:04though I'm gone. So I won't be able to respond
- 3:07too much in the comments for a few days, but there is still
- 3:10some content coming out later in the week.
- 3:13So enjoy that. I hope that you will.
- 3:15I've got an off topic with Darren and we have a, a, a fun
- 3:20guest on for our guest episode of the month.
- 3:25Some of you know him, some of you don't.
- 3:27I think that you will enjoy him very much.
- 3:29Great guy. So that conversation is going to
- 3:32come out here on Friday and then 5050 on another thing coming out
- 3:36Saturday. We'll see what I can post before
- 3:39the flight takes off for the trip, but still have some stuff
- 3:44later this week. All right, enough of that
- 3:47rambling. Enough of this nonsense.
- 3:48Let's get into our first question of six with five
- 3:53responses. Right here this question says
- 3:58Greg you are the hardest working man on YouTube.
- 4:01I have been consolidating cards to get a few bigger ones.
- 4:04Price wise I love the cards I traded into.
- 4:08However sometimes I feel a pain of regret for a few I have to
- 4:13let go of. How do you balance this when you
- 4:17go after a big boy card like the Jackie rookie?
- 4:21For me a card like that is at the top of the list.
- 4:25Would have to give up several cards to afford it.
- 4:29Thanks for your time. This is a great question.
- 4:33Now, first of all, there's definitely been a movement from
- 4:36some about some consolidating and some people are pro
- 4:40consolidation and some people are not pro consolidation.
- 4:44There's not a right way to do this hobby.
- 4:45Don't feel like just because some other people are
- 4:49consolidating that that's the right move to make.
- 4:52Big collections are awesome. Smaller collections with maybe a
- 4:56few pieces that are a little bit more expensive, and you had to
- 5:01move into those by selling several things to get one thing.
- 5:04Those are awesome too. But there's not a better or a
- 5:07wrong way to do it. There is not a good way to be a
- 5:11card collector or a wrong way to be a card collector.
- 5:15The only way you should be a card collector is the way you
- 5:19enjoy being a card collector. That said, I personally have
- 5:24done a little bit of selling. I didn't sell for several years,
- 5:28not very much at all. I've sold a little bit over the
- 5:30last six months to afford a couple of things.
- 5:33I did my episode on Saturday and I showed my Walter Johnson T2O6
- 5:39portrait. I showed my Babe Dietrichson
- 5:41sports King cards again. Check out that episode from last
- 5:44Saturday if you haven't yet seen that.
- 5:48But that's just what I've done. But I, I have still bought some
- 5:52smaller cards too. I, I, I still have been buying
- 5:57some things that aren't crazy expensive.
- 5:59I mean, I bought a Mikey Goonies Sean Astin auto card the other
- 6:06day and it was, it was like 125 bucks.
- 6:09I mean, that's it's not a huge card.
- 6:11It's not cheap, but it's not huge.
- 6:14So I'm still buying some smaller things and some not huge things
- 6:18too. But that's not your question.
- 6:21Your question is how do I deal with the pain of losing some of
- 6:25the big cards? All right, here is my analogy
- 6:29for you for this one. When I first married my wife, we
- 6:35had money, we went out to eat, we had nicer cars.
- 6:41We had. Nice.
- 6:41Cars we slept in on weekends and then we decided to have
- 6:48children. And when we had children, I
- 6:51remember how bad my body hurt from waking up in the middle of
- 6:55the night to get my kids when they woke up crying to give them
- 7:00a bottle. All my money was going toward
- 7:03formula. And, and Molly, Molly had a
- 7:06upset stomach all the time. So she needed this special
- 7:09formula, I think it was called like Nutramigen and it was like
- 7:123 times the price of the regular formula.
- 7:15But it was, it was what we had to do.
- 7:18And then our our health insurance went up and, and our
- 7:22bills went up and everything went up in cost.
- 7:26And then they started playing sports and things really went up
- 7:29in cost. I no longer had weekends.
- 7:32I went years without sleeping in on a Saturday.
- 7:35And it was worth it. It was worth it because the
- 7:40payoff of having these kids and loving them and seeing them grow
- 7:46and seeing them accomplish things and seeing them become
- 7:51not just my kids but also my good friends now too, that was
- 7:57worth every missed hour of sleep.
- 8:00It was worth every dollar that I spent now.
- 8:04I could have sat there and gone, Oh my gosh, I can't do this, I
- 8:08need sleep. We have no money.
- 8:11The stress of the money and the lack of sleep was brutal, but it
- 8:18was so worth it. It was the best decision.
- 8:21It was the best decision. Marrying my wife and and
- 8:24deciding for us to have children was by far the best thing I've
- 8:29ever done and it is the best thing I'll ever do.
- 8:33But man, it was difficult and it still is.
- 8:36There was something that popped up this weekend where Lucy, she
- 8:41thought that she hadn't paid a fee and so she thought she had
- 8:45been dropped from some of her classes and she was stressed and
- 8:48upset. And then I was not upset, but I
- 8:52was stressed for her because I care about her and I don't want
- 8:56to see her have to struggle with the fallout of something like
- 9:00that. It's so hard, but it's so worth
- 9:03it. So I think The thing is this, I
- 9:06think if we focus on the struggle and the sadness of
- 9:13losing some cards, then we're not fully spending our efforts
- 9:20enjoying the thing that we added.
- 9:22Now here's the other thing. How much better does it feel to
- 9:28have the card that you had to sacrifice for?
- 9:33How much better does it feel to have this monster card that you
- 9:38had to give up a lot of stuff that you liked in order to get
- 9:42into it, Not only see the the the best things in life, the
- 9:49best things that we we have the things that feel the best are
- 9:54the things that take sacrifice. I about oh man, 10 years ago, I
- 10:01got this wild idea that I needed to ride a 100 mile bike race.
- 10:08They call them centuries. And I started going out on
- 10:13weekends and I started riding my bike for 10 miles and I had this
- 10:20saddle soreness. There are like bones in your
- 10:25butt that you don't realize hurt until you sit on them.
- 10:29And they call it saddle soreness.
- 10:31And you say, how do you get rid of saddle soreness?
- 10:33You keep riding, you go back out and ride again, and then you
- 10:36ride again and ride again. And I slowly worked my way up
- 10:40and I went out week after week after week.
- 10:43And I'd come home from work and I'd go out and ride 20 miles.
- 10:46I'd come home from work, I'd go out and run 23 miles, and then
- 10:49I'd ride 26 miles. Then I'd ride 30 miles.
- 10:53It got to the point where I finally was ready for my last
- 10:58big ride before the race. And it's not really a race, it's
- 11:01more of an accomplishment. It's like running a marathon.
- 11:04It's like I'm not really racing anybody, I'm just trying to
- 11:06finish. And so my last practice was a 75
- 11:13mile ride. So I went down, up in Folsom,
- 11:16CA, near the Folsom Prison, that Folsom prison, the Johnny Cash
- 11:21song. And I rode all the way down
- 11:23through Sacramento, along the river.
- 11:27I rode all the way through West Sacramento.
- 11:29I rode all the way to Davis, CA, where there's a university.
- 11:35And I went in, to, in and out and I got a double, double.
- 11:39This is a true. Story It was 37 miles from
- 11:43Folsom to Davis. I ate a double.
- 11:46Double. And then I rode back.
- 11:49And when I finished the 100 mile race, it was, it was actually
- 11:53technically 101 miles when I finished.
- 11:57The accomplishment was just amazing.
- 11:59And the reason it was amazing is because of all of those weekends
- 12:04and all of those days. I had to load up my stuff and
- 12:07get out of my gear out and prepare and go out and ride and
- 12:11train, see if something was easy, if I could just write a
- 12:16check and go buy a card. I don't know if I appreciate it
- 12:22as much as if I had to give something up for it.
- 12:28Sometimes when you put in effort and you give up something, when
- 12:33you have to sacrifice, that's when we actually appreciate
- 12:38things. If only good things happened in
- 12:41life, then would we ever really appreciate the good things that
- 12:46happen? We actually need some bad things
- 12:51to happen to help us to fully appreciate the good things.
- 12:59If you didn't have to give up anything good to move into the
- 13:03big car that you're looking at consolidating into, it wouldn't
- 13:07be a it wouldn't be difficult, it would be easy.
- 13:10And if it was easy, would you really appreciate it?
- 13:13That's my thought. Maybe I'm crazy, I'm probably
- 13:17crazy, but that's what I think. And how do I deal with it?
- 13:24Yeah, recently I've sold. I've sold some cards that I
- 13:26like. If I didn't like them, I
- 13:28wouldn't have bought them, but I bought them because I like them.
- 13:32And then I had them. But then I said I've got this
- 13:35new goal I'm going to have to sacrifice to achieve it.
- 13:40So buying and buying and buying and never selling to me is way
- 13:48easier. Than having to sell some of your
- 13:52stuff to buy the thing you want more, which should help us to
- 13:59appreciate that thing the most. This one says happy new year.
- 14:05I love your channel. I am 71 with a large card
- 14:09collection that is mostly vintage.
- 14:11It is also mostly ungraded. But as I get older, I feel that
- 14:16I need to try and consolidate it some and I need to grade a lot
- 14:20of cards. How do you decide at what level
- 14:24do you grade cards? Where do you prefer sending
- 14:27them? If they're vintage now,
- 14:30especially high end cards, what about sending lower value cards
- 14:35to Greg Morris or Com CI? Appreciate your advice and look
- 14:39forward to hearing your comments.
- 14:41Thanks. All right, there are multiple
- 14:44questions here. I'm going to do my best to share
- 14:47my thoughts, my opinions on how I would handle this situation if
- 14:52I were in your shoes. Sounds like you need to get a
- 14:55bunch of cards graded. And the first question is which
- 14:58cards are worth grading? Well, there is effort, there is
- 15:02time, there is cost to getting a card graded.
- 15:06So when you look at the card that you have let let let's say
- 15:09if you were to try to sell this card raw, it was $60.00, but if
- 15:14you graded it and it got say A6, it would be worth $100.
- 15:21OK, So let's say that the grading company you're planning
- 15:25on on going through is, I don't know, PSA, which is about $25 a
- 15:31card. So now you've got a $60.00 card.
- 15:34You pay $25 to grade it. You got to ship it, which is
- 15:37another fee. So you're about $30 into the
- 15:41card and it started at 60 and you're going to spend 30 to make
- 15:45it worth 100. Is it worth all of that effort
- 15:48to add $10 in value? Probably not.
- 15:53But say that $60.00 card, if it got the grade that you think
- 15:57that it deserves, and that's a key to is what is like the worst
- 16:01case scenario grade it would get.
- 16:02That's how I always make these determinations.
- 16:05So let's say, and this is for selling cards, this is not for
- 16:08keeping cards. If you want to keep a card and
- 16:10you like the looks of it and a certain holder, it might bring
- 16:13more added value to your enjoyment than the cost of
- 16:16grading it. So that's a whole nother thing.
- 16:19But it sounds like you're getting some cards that you want
- 16:21to sell, that you want to consolidate, you want to kind of
- 16:24leave less of a burden to family members eventually and you want
- 16:29to take care of that. So let's just say that you want
- 16:32to send a card in to SGC, OK, it's 15 bucks, got to ship it,
- 16:38blah blah blah. We'll call it $20.
- 16:40If the card is a a $50 card and you spend $20 to get it graded,
- 16:46you've got now $70.00 into it and it then becomes a $200 card.
- 16:52But if you if you didn't grade it, you could probably only get
- 16:5550 bucks for it. Then you are in this card $70
- 17:02and the added value from where you're at right now which is 50
- 17:09up to 200, you got $150.00 added value and it only cost you 1520
- 17:16with shipping to do it. That's like 7-8 X your
- 17:21investment to get it graded. That I think is worth it.
- 17:25So a lot of this is hard for me to answer or share my thoughts
- 17:29because a lot of it is dependent on how much somebody values
- 17:32their time. If you've got a lot of time on
- 17:36your hands, it might be worth it to go through the process of
- 17:40listing it and packing it up and mailing it to add $20 in value.
- 17:45But to somebody else, if you're, if you're a brain surgeon and
- 17:49you don't have a ton of time on your hands and instead of
- 17:53operating on brains, you're sending cards to SGC, the
- 17:59threshold might be a little bit higher.
- 18:02So that's my first answer. The the added value of having it
- 18:06in a holder and in and when I say added value, I mean the
- 18:10theoretical added value of what somebody would pay you for it
- 18:14since you're selling it. Now again, if this is for your
- 18:17C, different story. That's not the situation I've
- 18:20been resented with. The situation I've been resented
- 18:23with is I want to sell a bunch of stuff.
- 18:25How do I maximize the money? So again, I think the way you
- 18:29maximize the money is the cards that if you get it graded and
- 18:34the worst case scenario grade comes through, it adds say 5X
- 18:39your investment to grade. It adds $6075 worth of value to
- 18:46spend 15 to 20 to get it graded. It's probably worth it in my
- 18:50eyes now if the card is like a $20 card and if it gets graded.
- 18:57It becomes a $50 card that's probably not worth your time and
- 19:01money. So I think your your Greg Morris
- 19:06cards idea is a great one. See, if I listed a raw card on
- 19:10eBay right now, people would go, I'm sure the pictures not
- 19:15showing the, the crease, there's probably some eraser mark or
- 19:19some stray, you know, pen mark on there that's going to make it
- 19:22or I can't grade it and it's going to kill the value.
- 19:24So nobody really trusts people anymore.
- 19:28And whether or not Greg Morris cards deserves trust is
- 19:32irrelevant. The thing is, is they have it so
- 19:35people believe if you buy a raw card on Greg Moore's cards that
- 19:40they say is near mint, people have a very confident opinion
- 19:46that they're going to get a near mint or very near, very close to
- 19:50it near mint card. And so because of that, they get
- 19:55a great value on ungraded cards. And so I would kind of go with
- 20:02my, my humble opinion is. Any card under probably 40 or 50
- 20:08bucks I would probably send in a huge lot to Greg Morris cards
- 20:12and let them piece it out and send you a check.
- 20:16They also charge because they do so many sales.
- 20:19They get a better rate through eBay and the amount that you
- 20:22could sell it for on eBay yourself is not going to be much
- 20:26different than the percentage you're going to get at the final
- 20:28sale if you do it through them, because they get a bulk rate and
- 20:32so they don't charge that much. I think that's the way to go.
- 20:35For the 40 to 50 and less dollar cards to the cards over about 50
- 20:41bucks, I think getting them graded is probably going to add
- 20:45enough value generally speaking that it's going to make it worth
- 20:49your time. So the final piece of this is I
- 20:52think this is the final piece. If I forgot a part, I forgive,
- 20:56forgive me follow up and I'll expand next week.
- 20:59But is is what is the what is the grading company that I would
- 21:06use? Well, my concerns about SGC are
- 21:10more for the long term because if SGC goes away in the next
- 21:16year, what will cards and SGC holders be worth in five
- 21:2010/15/20 years? It sounds like you're looking to
- 21:23sell soon. And at the moment SGC is very
- 21:27well respected and and SGC's holders and cards in them are
- 21:32very well respected. That's not going to change in
- 21:35the next 6 months. And and even if they buried SGC
- 21:41like put them out of business in the next three months or six
- 21:45months, I, I don't, I don't. See the cards in SGC holders
- 21:50plummeting immediately? Might there might be a little
- 21:52dip but nothing crazy. So if it was me and there it
- 21:57sounds like they're vintage cards.
- 21:59Now if they're modern cards it's a different story.
- 22:01It sounds like they're vintage cards.
- 22:03So I would take my vintage cards personally.
- 22:05This is my opinion. I would send the ones worth more
- 22:09than 5060 bucks over to SGC. Get them graded, list them.
- 22:15I would take the cards under 5060 bucks.
- 22:18I would send those in a lot to Greg Moore's cards and have them
- 22:22sell them raw. Now, some of you out there
- 22:25listening go, you're crazy. That's not the right way to do
- 22:27it. Tell us the right way to do it.
- 22:29I'm open. I'm open to other ideas, but
- 22:32that is the advice I would give. That's advice I'm giving.
- 22:36If I was in your shoes right now, that's what I would do.
- 22:40So another option. I mean, another option is you
- 22:45could just sell the whole collection.
- 22:47You could take all the cards and go.
- 22:48I'm not dealing with it. I'm going to sell it to a
- 22:51trusted person. You know, you could call up a
- 22:54Chris Sewell, you could do something like that.
- 22:57You could list them. You know, you could contact Theo
- 23:01at CIA and and have them do a big auction for lots and things
- 23:06like that. Those are options too if you
- 23:08don't want to mess with it, but assuming you want to maximize
- 23:14every dollar you can out of it, I would go with the plan of
- 23:18grading the cards with SGC. My opinion that are worth more
- 23:23than 5060 bucks. Everything less than 5060 bucks
- 23:27send off in a lot to Greg Moore's cards.
- 23:30Let them piece them out and sell them raw.
- 23:34Let me know what you guys think. A question for everyone, has
- 23:39anyone had any luck booking any rooms for the National?
- 23:43Specifically, say across the street from the Convention
- 23:47Center at say, the Crowne Plaza. I have booked a room there for
- 23:51years now. The national people control all
- 23:54that stuff. All I get is no availability for
- 23:58the dates requested. I've been working on this for a
- 24:01couple of months now with no luck.
- 24:04Now there is another kick in the nuts.
- 24:07Stinking corporate America. You are not alone.
- 24:12This is a real thing. This is something that is
- 24:15happening. This is part of the corporate
- 24:17takeover of the hobby. I have a lot of friends who for
- 24:22years, what they would do is as soon as they were checking out
- 24:26Orlando collect of a collector's dream, he shared this himself
- 24:31that when he was going to check out of his hotel at the
- 24:35National, he went to book for the following year and they
- 24:38said, sorry, they're blocked out.
- 24:40The the convention has reserved all the rooms.
- 24:44So what they did is they basically took over all the
- 24:49rooms. Now I don't know exactly how
- 24:51that's going to work. I don't know if they're doing
- 24:52priority for their dealers and their VI PS and their staff.
- 24:57Maybe maybe they're going to basically sublet them to us.
- 25:03But you have to or see Lucy used to play in the soccer
- 25:05tournaments down in San Diego and you had to stay at one of
- 25:08the team hotels. And so I would go to, you know,
- 25:13you'd call up, you'd use the code and you'd book the hotel
- 25:17and the hotel prices were always really high.
- 25:21And it was like, man, these these are high prices.
- 25:23Just must be because the soccer tournaments in town, well, we
- 25:28then later had another, we needed a second room.
- 25:32And so we needed a second room. So I was already checked into
- 25:35the hotel and I went up and I said, hey, can I get another
- 25:37room for two nights? And they said, yeah.
- 25:40And they gave me a price and it was like half of what I paid.
- 25:44And I'm like, why did I pay double for the other room?
- 25:48And they said, oh, well, you booked it through the code.
- 25:51And I'm like, and that made it more see, because I think a code
- 25:56would give me like a bulk rate and a better deal.
- 26:00And they were like, well, basically what happens is the
- 26:04tournament buys the rooms from us for like 100 bucks.
- 26:10And then when you use their code, it's like, you know, $170
- 26:16and then they get the $70 and we're like, well, we're never
- 26:20booking with the team hotel again.
- 26:21Then we thought it was a bulk rate.
- 26:23We thought it was a better deal. And they're like, yeah, it's
- 26:26not. So the next year we, we were
- 26:29going to not book with the team hotel in the tournament.
- 26:31Said if you don't use the team hotel codes, if at least 80% of
- 26:36your team doesn't book with the team hotel code, then you, your
- 26:41team won't be invited to the tournament next year.
- 26:44I'm like, why don't they just add this to the cost of the
- 26:48tournament entry fee instead of taking an extra seventy, 8000
- 26:53bucks per room? So that might be what they're
- 26:57doing. I don't know what they're doing.
- 26:58I don't know if they're going to book them all at $100 and then
- 27:02charge us 200 by accessing it through their site and they get
- 27:06the difference. I don't know if they're trying
- 27:08to reserve them so they could get all their dealers and all
- 27:10their staff and all of their maintenance and all those people
- 27:13into the rooms that are close by.
- 27:15I don't know how this is going to play out.
- 27:18So what I. Did is I just, I picked the
- 27:21dates, I went into Expedia and I just picked the dates that I was
- 27:27going to want for the National. And I just slowly expanded my
- 27:32range of how far and I tried this hotel and then the next
- 27:36closest hotel and then the next closest hotel and the next
- 27:38closest hotel. And I finally found one that was
- 27:41out of the range that the hotel, the hotels were all booked by
- 27:46the National and it was I think .8 or .9 miles, .8 or .9 miles
- 27:55from the Convention Center. And that's where I booked.
- 27:59So I booked my room at the Westin O'Hare.
- 28:02So if you're interested in staying at the same hotel, I'm
- 28:05staying at the Westin O'Hare. So what I then did is I.
- 28:09I reached out to a few friends, not many.
- 28:11I mean, I didn't, I don't know. I just said, hey guys, just so
- 28:14you know, I booked my room. Wait, where?
- 28:16How did you book a room? I don't know.
- 28:17I found, I found a hotel that wasn't crazy far away and it's
- 28:22like .8 isn't it's walking distance kind of.
- 28:27It's going to be a pain. I'm going to probably have to
- 28:29Uber. It socks.
- 28:30I hate it. It makes me angry that we can't
- 28:33just book the Embassy Suites across the street because
- 28:38they've blocked it out. It's not something that makes me
- 28:42happy. It makes me angry.
- 28:43It makes me frustrated. But that's the hand I was dealt.
- 28:48And to me, I said, well, I need to book my room.
- 28:52I'm a planner. I don't want to wait.
- 28:55Maybe I get a worse deal. Maybe nothing else becomes
- 28:57available. Maybe it gets worse.
- 28:59So I booked the closest hotel I could.
- 29:02That seemed like it would work for me, so I will be at the West
- 29:05in O'Hare. So you're not alone.
- 29:07This is a new thing that they're doing.
- 29:10It is another kick in the nuts for sure.
- 29:16This one says. Just a thought.
- 29:18It seems that YouTube content creators have developed
- 29:21relationships with major dealers in the hobby.
- 29:25Why not create our own Strongsville show, bring in
- 29:29major dealers and have our own vintage show?
- 29:34Trevor at Blue Collar Card says entertaining as usual.
- 29:38In my opinion. If the Strong's little show had
- 29:40just been moved, I doubt most attendees would have an issue.
- 29:45I believe the real issue is the combining it with another shiny
- 29:48card cartoon character card show.
- 29:51I've noticed a lot of comments about the YouTube vintage
- 29:54community starting their own vintage only card show.
- 29:58That would be possible if someone was willing and able to
- 30:02organize and lead it. My question is, until someone
- 30:06does, would the vintage YouTube content creators and viewers be
- 30:12better served by moving the vintage destination around every
- 30:16year to a different show, assuming the Independence show
- 30:20is going to be an all card show moving forward?
- 30:24This year at Independence, then Nashville, then Philly, then
- 30:28Indy, then Dallas, then Denver, etcetera.
- 30:33All right, you know, there's been a lot of talk about the
- 30:36Strongsville show. I'm still going again, it's
- 30:40called, I don't know, I still calling it Strongsville or
- 30:43Independence. I don't know but.
- 30:46Basically, the card show a little South of Cleveland.
- 30:49I'm still excited. And the reason I'm still excited
- 30:52is because a bunch of my friends are going.
- 30:55And I do feel some guilt that we have basically flipped over the
- 31:00tables and and changed the charm of the show for all the people
- 31:05who are longtime attenders. Because, you know, we stood up
- 31:08on the table tops with our bull horns and shouted, come, come
- 31:12one, come all. This is the greatest thing ever.
- 31:15And we absolutely changed it. And you know, I wasn't going to
- 31:20go in 2024. I was.
- 31:22I didn't decide to go until about a week before the show.
- 31:27But then I just kept one after another.
- 31:29Christopher Missouri would get on his channel and he'd say
- 31:32Orlando's coming from a collector's dream, Darren's
- 31:35coming return to collecting. And he just kept naming person
- 31:38after person. You know, Petty's, Moynihan's
- 31:42coming and just kept naming one after another.
- 31:43Theo, you know, John 3D, all these people are coming.
- 31:47I'm like, I just want to go hang out with everybody.
- 31:49And I I had a couple of friends who are like, you should go,
- 31:53it'll be great. And.
- 31:54And I went and I had a great time and I said, I'm coming back
- 32:00to the questions. Should we start our own?
- 32:03I can tell you this, there have been many conversations from
- 32:07many different people about the possibility of doing that again.
- 32:13Sports Card Clubhouse. I did a podcast only.
- 32:17It will not show up on video. I'm going to start doing a
- 32:20couple of times a month a podcast only episode and I did a
- 32:24podcast only episode and had a conversation with Ash of Legacy
- 32:28cards that Ash the the one of the best dealers out there Ash.
- 32:33And he basically said, yeah, I mean, we'll see how it goes this
- 32:37year. But you know, there seems to be
- 32:40demand for vintage only shows. So, you know, there have been
- 32:44other people talking about it there.
- 32:46And I don't want to get into names.
- 32:47I don't get on who said this, but there have been lots of
- 32:50conversations about it. And it doesn't have to be the
- 32:53Strongsville show. It doesn't have to be the show
- 32:55at the ice rink. It doesn't have to be the second
- 32:59weekend in April. It just has to be a place where
- 33:01everyone agrees to come together and hang out.
- 33:04Because that's the part of it that I think that we all like is
- 33:07hanging out with each other and meeting each other and new faces
- 33:10and new friends. And, and that's the fun part.
- 33:14There have been those conversations.
- 33:16I love Trevor's idea about, you know, one year it'd be the
- 33:20Philly show and one year it'd be the Strongsville show, and one
- 33:24year it'd be the, you know, Dallas show, whatever.
- 33:27I think that sounds like a lot of fun.
- 33:29The problem is, is when, when there's a lack of consistency,
- 33:35when it's like, you know, randomly spinning the wheel to
- 33:38see where it is next year, it makes it hard for everyone to
- 33:42coordinate. It makes it hard for everybody
- 33:44to get on the same page. One of the reasons that April
- 33:48works is because it's, you know, like four months away from the
- 33:51National and a lot of people take a couple of days off of
- 33:54work for the National. And then if you take a day or
- 33:56two off of work for Strongsville, it's like 4 months
- 33:59apart. It's so you can't really do like
- 34:02June. You can't really do August, you
- 34:04can't really do September. That throws out a lot of shows.
- 34:08It would have to be something like October, November, and then
- 34:11there's traveling is a little bit harder that time of the
- 34:14year, so maybe it would have to be spring.
- 34:17So it really limits it. There's only really, you know,
- 34:21something like maybe March and April and maybe like October are
- 34:25probably the only real months that it would work, but there
- 34:28could be some sort of rotation thing.
- 34:30I think that sounds fun. I and I use a lot of hobby funds
- 34:36on my travel for these shows. You know, I'm going, I decided
- 34:41I'm going to go down to the West Coast Card show, AKA the Burbank
- 34:45Card show in February. And I'm going to spend like 700
- 34:49and $5800 before I even walk in the door of my hobby funds just
- 34:53to go see people. But then I start hearing some of
- 34:56my friends that are going and I'm like, well, yeah, I mean,
- 34:59Tony Southern Collectors going Mike, I if I start naming names
- 35:03and I'm going to forget someone to feel like a jerk, so I'll
- 35:05stop. But Long story short, a lot of
- 35:08people that I really like are going to be there.
- 35:11And before I started thinking about booking it, I reached out
- 35:14to some other people and said, are you going?
- 35:16Because I'm going. I'd love to run into you.
- 35:18And and a lot of them are like, well, yeah, let's go.
- 35:20You know, I'll go. And and so for me, that's a big
- 35:24part of it. I could buy cards anywhere, you
- 35:26know, I could see cards on eBay, I could see cards on auction
- 35:29houses, I could go on auction wire and look up most cards I
- 35:33could possibly think of and find find just about anything I want
- 35:38to see. But for me the the getting to
- 35:41spend time with with certain people is is the harder part.
- 35:48I've thought about maybe just doing the February West Coast
- 35:51Card Show and then the National moving forward after this year
- 35:56instead of going to Strongsville.
- 35:58Because then my West Coast friends who don't want to go all
- 36:01the way to the East Coast, like, you know, like Dylan, who lives
- 36:04out in the Pacific Ocean, you know, he can't, he can't keep
- 36:08going to Chicago and, you know, Atlantic City and Cleveland.
- 36:12It's just too much. But he'll come to the West Coast
- 36:15show, you know, And so I have some friends on the West Coast
- 36:19that that are like, yeah, I don't want to keep going to the
- 36:22East Coast for show. So I thought about that.
- 36:24So I don't know what my schedule is going to be for 2027, but for
- 36:302026 in February, I'm going to the West Coast Card Show.
- 36:34I'm going to be there Friday for the second-half of the day and
- 36:37all day Saturday for Strongsville.
- 36:41I'm going to be, or whatever you want to call it, I'm going to be
- 36:44there. I'm, I'm getting in there
- 36:47Thursday night. I will be at the show Friday and
- 36:50Saturday and then I'm leaving early Sunday morning.
- 36:52So I won't be at the show on Sunday at all.
- 36:55So I will be there just all day Friday, all day Saturday and
- 36:59then the National. Right now I tentatively have my
- 37:03hotel booked for the whole thing for Wednesday to Sunday.
- 37:07That's a long time. I don't know.
- 37:10That's where I'm thinking at the moment.
- 37:12I last year I came home, I went like Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
- 37:17and came home at the crack of dawn on Saturday and I felt like
- 37:21I kind of missed out on some stuff.
- 37:22So I, I'm tentatively planning on going for all five days this
- 37:26time. We'll see if I do that again,
- 37:29but I'll be at the National. So that's my 20272026 schedule.
- 37:33We will to be determined if the West Coast card shows, awesome.
- 37:37If the new Strongsville show is different, we'll depend on what
- 37:41I do for those. But I have a lot of friends on
- 37:43the East Coast that I will go to either the Philly show or the
- 37:48National or the Strongsville show, something toward the East
- 37:51Coast. So I can see those guys.
- 37:53But I kind of like the idea of going to the West Coast card
- 37:56show every year because then I can see some of my West Coast
- 37:59friends too. And again, for me, that's the
- 38:02key. But to answer your question,
- 38:05yes, there are a lot of people that are talking about it.
- 38:08The problem is we'll have full time jobs.
- 38:11If I was tired, if I was retired, if I wasn't a teacher
- 38:17who was trying to pump out three or four videos on my YouTube
- 38:20channel every week and I had free time, I would absolutely
- 38:23look into doing some sort of centralized card show.
- 38:27I would absolutely think about doing that.
- 38:30But the other hard part for me is I'm on the West Coast and all
- 38:33these dealers on the East Coast, all of my friends who drive in
- 38:37on the East Coast, they're not going to fly to Sacramento.
- 38:40They're not going to fly to Sacramento for a card show just
- 38:45because I'm putting it on. I've thought about doing a card
- 38:49show. I've really thought about doing
- 38:50it, but it would have to be local.
- 38:52You can't plan with an, an Event Center And with all of these,
- 38:57you know, different, all the different people you'd have to
- 39:00be in contact with. I can't plan a show in, you
- 39:04know, Pittsburgh from Sacramento.
- 39:07That just doesn't work and and I know that not enough people
- 39:12would come from the East Coast all the way to the West Coast
- 39:15for it. So I'm not the guy to plan it,
- 39:17even though I would really enjoy doing that.
- 39:20But I don't have the time right now between my kids, between my
- 39:23job, between my channel. And I think that's where a lot
- 39:26of people fall is It's a lot to put together for a concept when
- 39:34a lot of us don't have the time at the moment to do that.
- 39:37And for me, it's not just the time.
- 39:39It's also the location. I can't assume that everybody is
- 39:44going to come to Sacramento for my little card show.
- 39:51And finally, Hall of Fame commenter Andrew says, hi, Greg.
- 39:55If you could travel to just one year and buy cards at their
- 40:00original prices. What would it be?
- 40:03And why? All right, First off, shout out
- 40:07to Andrew for the question. Andrew's an important part of
- 40:12this YouTube community. He is a longtime commenter, an
- 40:16important commenter, a Hall of Fame commenter.
- 40:19And you know, just because somebody doesn't have a channel
- 40:23where they get up and record stuff and talk into a cell phone
- 40:27and post it onto YouTube, that doesn't mean you're not an
- 40:31important, vital part of this wheel of this YouTube community.
- 40:37We need some of everything. And Andrew is a vital member in
- 40:43his commenting and question asking on not just my channel,
- 40:47but on a whole bunch of channels.
- 40:49So thank you Andrew for all that you do for us in the community.
- 40:53Now to answer your question, you know, there's two thoughts.
- 40:56There's two thoughts, like a lot of us think well, if we go back
- 41:01to 1952, we could buy a bunch of sealed wax at the original cost.
- 41:07And then I could sell all that sealed wax for thousands and
- 41:11thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars and then
- 41:14have all this money to buy whatever I want.
- 41:16That's what some of us would think, and you're not wrong.
- 41:24But I also think, but wait a second, where what would be a
- 41:28time that I could go, where I could get stuff that I want to
- 41:31have? Because some things are hard to
- 41:35find and and you could have accessed them at that time.
- 41:41So some of these cards, like in 1888, there were a ton of cool
- 41:45cards, right? There were some Duke and Sons
- 41:49cards, there were some Allen and Ginter cards.
- 41:52There were the Goodwin Champion cards there.
- 41:54Were a lot of really cool sets back.
- 41:57Then. And those cards are super.
- 41:59Rare now. So maybe what I do is I go and I
- 42:02buy some rare cards because I could access them and yeah,
- 42:06they're cheap, but I could find them.
- 42:08So part of me is pulled in not the direction of the quick flip
- 42:14like the 52 tops wax, but if I go to 1888, I could get these
- 42:18cards before they're destroyed and ruined and lost forever.
- 42:23So part of me leans towards that.
- 42:27It's a fun question, you know, but if I want and, and another
- 42:31thing, I used to go to card shows out here on the on the
- 42:34West Coast in Northern California all the time.
- 42:37And I remember going to like little card shows at Holiday Inn
- 42:42hotels. And a lot of the time there was
- 42:46that star car dealer and I remember looking at their setup
- 42:52and they had stacks and stacks and stacks of teen bags of star
- 42:59cards. And they weren't expensive at
- 43:02all. They were.
- 43:04And everybody kind of looked at them as sort of like, oh, those
- 43:07are, those aren't like real cards.
- 43:09Those are kind of like reprint cards.
- 43:12Those aren't like real. And I mean, I vividly remember
- 43:17seeing those dealers quite frankly, frequently.
- 43:20And they weren't busy booths. They just weren't busy at all.
- 43:25And they just weren't looked at the way they are now.
- 43:29But what would a bunch of Michael Jordan star cards be if
- 43:39I could have bought those things for just cheap?
- 43:44And now what's happening with those?
- 43:47So part of me is like 84 go buy out the dealer with all of the
- 43:54team bags of star cards. Part of me is like the 52 tops
- 43:59wax go into every grocery store and buy those up.
- 44:05But I think I think I would go with, I would go to 18881887 and
- 44:131888 was a really important year for rare tobacco issue cards.
- 44:20I think I would go. There, and the reason is because
- 44:23I would buy up a bunch of those cards to save them, to save them
- 44:29from being lost and ruined. Now, that would obviously really
- 44:35affect the value of them. If I had this horde, this box of
- 44:40a bunch of those, they wouldn't have the same value.
- 44:43Just sort of like the Black Swamp find.
- 44:46You find a whole bunch of something and the value is
- 44:48actually not as much as it otherwise would have been,
- 44:51wouldn't have been. But there are some beautiful,
- 44:54important and beautiful cards from 1888 that I wish more
- 45:02people could experience. And so I think that I would go
- 45:06to 1888, buy a bunch of those up, not because of the money
- 45:11that would be made, but because I would be able to save and
- 45:16preserve these really cool cards so that more people could
- 45:21experience them. Because I think there's some, I
- 45:24think 1888 is maybe the best year of, of cards ever.
- 45:33And that's saying something. I know some people would say, Oh
- 45:37no, it's 33. And that would have been a good
- 45:40choice. That's a good choice too. 33
- 45:42would be a really good choice. I think I'm going 1888.
- 45:47But share down below what you would do, what year you would go
- 45:50to. That's an interesting question
- 45:52and I love it. And if you guys have a question
- 45:55for an upcoming episode, again, as always, don't hesitate.
- 45:58Ask it down below. I look forward to hearing those
- 46:02again later in the week. I will be gone but I will still
- 46:05have some videos posting so look out for those as they come up on
- 46:11my feed later in the week.
