- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30Today we're talking about accepting compliments and gifts
- 0:33that we don't expect. Well, we don't ever really
- 0:36expect compliments, but when they show up, are you willing to
- 0:38accept them? And when someone offers you a
- 0:41gift, are you willing to accept it?
- 0:43So these both came up for me personally and I recognize that
- 0:48I didn't accept it. So first let's talk about a
- 0:51random compliment I got. And someone said at the
- 0:54hairdressers, I walked in and they said, oh your hair is
- 0:57gorgeous. Now I did not feel that my hair
- 0:59looked gorgeous by any stretch of the means.
- 1:02So I was very adamant about saying Oh no, it's a mess right
- 1:06now. And I immediately diminished the
- 1:09fact that my head looked the way that it did.
- 1:12And I sat there and she didn't say anything else.
- 1:16She just said what she said. And then she didn't say anything
- 1:18else. And I sat there for a second and
- 1:20I said to myself, it's interesting that you did that.
- 1:23Note that. And I filed it away, didn't
- 1:26think anything else about it. And then a friend of mine, I put
- 1:30up a post that I'm very fortunate that my old, my
- 1:33daughter, my older daughter is pregnant and the healthy baby
- 1:38boy. And we are celebrating like
- 1:40crazy. And I put up a post about it.
- 1:42And one of my friends who is near and dear to my heart for
- 1:46many reasons, sent me a message immediately and said she has a
- 1:52baby product company. And she sent me a, a message
- 1:55immediately saying I want to send your daughter one of the
- 1:59pillows, these special pillows for the baby.
- 2:02And I was flattered that she even said that immediately.
- 2:07It was very sweet. And I typed a message and it
- 2:10said thank you so much. I miss you.
- 2:12I hope you are doing well. I appreciate you thinking of us
- 2:16and her. I'm happy to pay you for it.
- 2:18And I didn't hit send because I recognized that there was
- 2:23something wrong. So I got up, went, got another
- 2:25cup of my hot drink, came back, sat down and was like, this is
- 2:30interesting that I immediately offered to pay for it when she
- 2:32clearly did not say in her message that she wanted me to
- 2:37pay for it. She wanted to give her
- 2:39something. That was what she said.
- 2:41I want to give this to her. And I immediately jumped in and
- 2:45said, oh, no, no, I will pay you for it.
- 2:48So where does that come from? Inside of us?
- 2:50Because we've all done it. We've all been in a situation
- 2:52where someone has said you look pretty, you look great, you look
- 2:55handsome. And we diminish it and we walk
- 2:59away from it. Or I'd like to buy you lunch or
- 3:01I'd like to get this for you. And they're like, no, no, no.
- 3:03And we're fighting with cards or cash to pay for something.
- 3:06Where does this come from? Well, in my opinion, for myself,
- 3:11what happened there is I know how hard she works to build her
- 3:16company. And I felt like if I took it, I
- 3:19would be taking money out of her, out of her pocket.
- 3:23And I know that that's something that's, you know, it, it, it
- 3:28just doesn't sit right with me when I go to take something away
- 3:32from someone. And the in the pause, when I
- 3:34took the pause, I realized she genuinely wanted to do something
- 3:37nice for myself and my family and my daughter.
- 3:40And I would rob her of that experience by not letting her do
- 3:43it. So I shut up and I retyped my
- 3:47message and I thanked her and I sent her the address.
- 3:50And I said, it's incredibly sweet of you.
- 3:52Thank you so much. You have no idea what that means
- 3:55to me. And then I felt the shift.
- 3:57I felt good. I felt good it as it resided in
- 3:59my gut. So I knew I'd done the right
- 4:01thing. Now, as far as the compliments
- 4:04go, this is even harder, especially when you don't, you
- 4:08know, feel good about yourself or you feel like you're wrecked
- 4:11and then you walk in somewhere and someone says something nice
- 4:13about you. You're it rather than just
- 4:16saying thank you. That means a lot to me that you
- 4:18see that or thank you for your kind words or just even if you
- 4:23can't get the thank you out, just smiling so that they know
- 4:25they did a good thing. We are robbing them of
- 4:28experiences when we don't choose to do it.
- 4:30So we have to find a space within us that allows us to do
- 4:35that so that they get the gift as much as we get the gifts.
- 4:38And that's the tricky part my friends.
- 4:40That is the tricky part. How do you get to that space?
- 4:43Well, first you have to recognize that you're doing it
- 4:45like I did. I had to recognize where my
- 4:47screwed up Ness was showing up so that I could do something
- 4:50about it because Lord knows it was not good.
- 4:53I did not need to be so standoffish with it.
- 4:57What I needed to be was more thoughtful about it so that I
- 5:00could say OK, thank you and thank and thank goodness I had
- 5:05the wherewithal to pull myself back from it.
- 5:08Second, you have to sit with it for a few minutes.
- 5:10I didn't just make this flip the switch in two seconds.
- 5:13It took me a hot minute. So take a second, take a breath,
- 5:17take a break, make it something that you are clearly focused on.
- 5:22That will make all the difference in the world, I
- 5:25promise. And when you do it, you're going
- 5:26to feel so much better, so much better.
- 5:30So allow yourself to accept the gifts, the compliments, all the
- 5:34little things, because that's what fills us up.
- 5:37All right, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I
- 5:39will see you all tomorrow. Bye.
