Transcript
- 0:02Hi, Millory Condon, welcome back.
- 0:04Iowa Sports Radio Network. Scotty Scheffler introducing
- 0:07himself to Ray's Creek, the betting favorite.
- 0:12A little trouble before we get to Eugene repay and he's on
- 0:16hold. He'll join us momentarily.
- 0:17Mike Palm will join us at the bottom of the hour.
- 0:19We'll head to Las Vegas. Couple of local notes.
- 0:21Trent Duncan Davit is how did we say yes?
- 0:24Absolutely. Formerly of Indianola, has been
- 0:26called up by the White Sox. Good for him so.
- 0:30Hawkeye pitcher at Indianola. I called his final game of his
- 0:33career at high school. Starter in high school.
- 0:35Yeah, Stud. Yeah what, 11 and one.
- 0:38His one loss came in the sub state championship game at home
- 0:40against Valley in a, I think it was 2, nothing, 2-1, something
- 0:44like that. A2 run Homer from a kid.
- 0:46I think Thompson was his last name from Valley that hit that
- 0:49home run. His career comes to a close.
- 0:51Valley went on to the state tournament.
- 0:53Then he went to Iowa and had a very successful year doing it
- 0:55there. But my favorite part of the
- 0:57story, have you seen what he's also doing on the side to
- 1:00supplement his career? Yes, he's writing.
- 1:03He is writing in the newspaper. Right.
- 1:06He wrote the story for the hometown paper of his call up.
- 1:09I think that's fascinating. It really and truly is not that
- 1:13I'm guessing he need need the part time game, right?
- 1:16But good for you for doing that. Man, that that's really cool.
- 1:19I'm going to follow him and certainly be looking for him.
- 1:24Don't watch a ton of White Sox, but you know what?
- 1:26Maybe I'll go it on my way. We like those local.
- 1:28Absolutely. Now there's another local angle
- 1:30as we go back to our chicken coop contest, the Frozen 4.
- 1:33I don't think he's ever been part of it before, right?
- 1:35But there's a Wisconsin tie. Absolutely.
- 1:38Former Waukee Warrior playing for a national championship as
- 1:42Grady Dearing. Who I think was also on the
- 1:44baseball team, if my memory serves.
- 1:45I'm going deep into the recesses of the mind for these ones here.
- 1:48Deering's his last name. Deering, yes, but Waukee, he is
- 1:52with the squad with Wisconsin, so he'll be playing for a
- 1:55national championship tomorrow night.
- 1:57All this local man. Iowans are great.
- 1:59No, I love it. Love it when they get their
- 2:01opportunity. You know what?
- 2:01I'm going to let you look at yesterday's box score.
- 2:04Oh, yeah. Before we get to Mike Palm,
- 2:06let's get to Eugene. Repay.
- 2:07Don't want to keep him on hold too long.
- 2:09Eugene Trenton. Ken, thank you for coming on and
- 2:11for being patient while we did a little, not off topic, but
- 2:15brought a couple other topics into the conversation.
- 2:17How are you, Eugene? I'm I'm great, thanks for having
- 2:20me on and always cool to hear some storylines like that and a
- 2:24writers plus professional baseball player.
- 2:27I mean, come on. No, absolutely.
- 2:30But guessing it moves him up on your book, no doubt about that.
- 2:32That's great. Lots, a lot of ground to cover
- 2:35with Eugene. And guess the first and
- 2:36foremost, the news of the day, the Big 12, is a sign there's
- 2:40Friday night games. Iowa State will participate paid
- 2:43in two of them, both of which are on the road.
- 2:46Head to Provo the 2nd Friday in in October to take on BYU and
- 2:52then the penultimate game of the regular season.
- 2:55I was stable. Head to Orlando to take on
- 2:58Central Florida. So the question is to you, which
- 3:00one of those do you think Heinz will send you one and he'll
- 3:03take? Will he take the sunshine?
- 3:05Go ahead. Oh no, I was going to say, why
- 3:07should we go to both? Nice.
- 3:11It'll be interesting to some Friday Night Lights for the
- 3:13Cyclones. I don't know when was the last
- 3:15time that's happened. It's been the first time for me
- 3:17since coming on to the beat, but I'm looking forward to both.
- 3:20Yeah, I like the fact that look, the Big 10, the Big 12, they
- 3:24they have to take these dates. It's it's put them in the
- 3:27spotlight. The Big 10 played on Fox
- 3:29throughout the regular season last year.
- 3:31I thought that went very well. I know not everybody liked it
- 3:34consensus wise, but why not? It's a window and it's an
- 3:37opportunity to shine some light on your team or your conference.
- 3:40So I think so. I think it's a win, win.
- 3:42As we're going through spring practice, you're getting to
- 3:44learn more and more about this squad, learn about the coaches.
- 3:47It is something different that we just haven't seen, and
- 3:50certainly the complete overhaul of a roster of 100 and some guys
- 3:53is just so different than what we're used to.
- 3:56Just getting a feel for the program, how it's going to look,
- 3:59and one thing that pops into my mind maybe how different things
- 4:02are going to be compared to the last decade of Matt Campbell.
- 4:06Without a doubt, without a doubt.
- 4:07We're still learning more about the personnel and more about the
- 4:10the systems and and things like that.
- 4:12They actually even gave us a little glimpse into practice at
- 4:16the Bergstrom Football Complex where we got to see 40 minutes
- 4:19of action. There wasn't anything too
- 4:21concrete. I think half of it was spent on
- 4:23warming up and special teams and then we got to see maybe 10
- 4:27minutes of individual drills. So just getting that first full
- 4:31look of what the team looks like.
- 4:32Very well choreographed, very well organized practices.
- 4:35According to our safety coach Pete Manage, he said that about
- 4:3980 to 90% of installation is done at this point of the
- 4:42spring. And now it's just a matter of
- 4:43just hammering away reps, hammering away plays, answering
- 4:47questions and, and just continuing to chip away at it.
- 4:49But to me, I, you know, when they told me that the goal was
- 4:52to get 80 to 90% installed, I was thinking, oh, will that be
- 4:56like towards the end of April? What will it look like?
- 4:59But to have it already in place for halfway through the spring,
- 5:03it was pretty impressive to me. And now they're just going to
- 5:05continue to to work at it. I'm looking forward to the open
- 5:08practice on April 25. I'm hoping that maybe we'll see
- 5:11some lives, some scrimmages and we'll get to finally see what
- 5:15the picture may look like going into the summer and and see some
- 5:18live action. I know you haven't had a chance
- 5:21to talk with all of the returning players, but what are
- 5:24they saying? The guys that you know that
- 5:26stuck around to play for the the Rodgers, the to begin the
- 5:29Rodgers era, it stuck around, decided, you know what, Iowa
- 5:32State's, that's where I want to be.
- 5:33They decide to stay. Hey, how difficult has it been
- 5:36for them, Eugene, if you had an opportunity to talk to any of
- 5:39the returners, just a new system for them, new voices to listen
- 5:43to, etcetera as they're going through something that they
- 5:46didn't anticipate once they got here, obviously.
- 5:49Yeah, we spoke to Carson Willich and Dominic Overby, and it
- 5:53seemed like with those guys and even Keaton Roskopf, who I
- 5:56talked to previously, it looked like a lot of the returners.
- 6:00It was definitely a scary time. It was definitely a lot of
- 6:02uncertainty. When Matt Campbell left and a
- 6:04new coach comes in, changes everything, you see a lot of
- 6:07your teammates leave to go elsewhere.
- 6:09And for the 40 guys who chose to stay, approximately 21 of them
- 6:13were scholarship players last year.
- 6:15There was some uncertainty, but I think there there is a common
- 6:18thread there where they just love Iowa State.
- 6:20Like Carson Willis said he wanted to finish what he
- 6:23started. Dominic Overby said he he came
- 6:25here with a plan and a vision. And while that vision and that
- 6:29plan started with Matt Campbell, he feels like Jimmy Rogers can
- 6:32help him continue to to make that plan go into fruition where
- 6:36he gets to have a fruitful career here at Iowa State.
- 6:39There's definitely some weird things for them, like they go
- 6:41from being completely outnumbered by the newcomers.
- 6:44They're trying to learn new verbage and new systems.
- 6:47But for the most part, just from talking with them and and
- 6:49coaches, it seems like the new, not the new guys, but the
- 6:53returners from last year are really grasping the concepts
- 6:56well. They've been able to show some
- 6:58of the new guys around. And in turn, then the newer guys
- 7:00are the guys from Washington State who followed all these
- 7:03coaches around from South Dakota to South Dakota to Washington
- 7:07State, now to Iowa State. They're helping them that
- 7:10they're helping them out too. So it's just kind of like a nice
- 7:12symbiotic beneficial relationship where everyone's
- 7:15kind of learning together, growing up together.
- 7:17But the guys who have stayed, they're very happy with their
- 7:20decision. There was some uncertainty, but
- 7:23they really buy into Rogers message and they're liking
- 7:26what's going on so far in the spring.
- 7:27And they really feel like that this could be a big year for
- 7:29them. Eugene, when you look at this
- 7:31roster up and down and getting to know these guys a little bit
- 7:34better, is there a particular position group you can point to
- 7:37and say that's going to be the strength of this team?
- 7:39I believe that this group is going to be the best that they
- 7:42have, at least as you currently know them.
- 7:44Yeah, I I still definitely still learning, but I feel like the
- 7:47defensive line or or you just like at the defense as a whole.
- 7:50I think the defense will definitely be the backbone of
- 7:53this team. You look at just a familiarity
- 7:55and and what this coaching staff has done at Washington State, it
- 7:59seemed like that they come in with a defensive pedigree.
- 8:01Even Jimmy Rogers, he himself rose up on the ranks on that
- 8:05side of the ball. And a lot of this coaching staff
- 8:08has been together through the years all on defense.
- 8:11So I feel like defense will be where we see this team shine.
- 8:15I personally am excited for the defensive line.
- 8:17I think the four man front, I think you look at the guys that
- 8:21they brought in from Washington State, they combined for more
- 8:23than 14 sacks last year and you know, the team has been itching
- 8:28and dying for a pass brush and putting pressure on
- 8:32quarterbacks. So I feel like we're going to
- 8:34see some changes up front with that begins with that group and
- 8:37then we'll see the linebackers and the secondary follow suit
- 8:40and really hammered home. But I'm really excited for that
- 8:42defensive line. Might Kyle Kinardi be maybe one
- 8:45of the strengths, one of the guys that they can count on?
- 8:48I certainly had a great year last year, Eugene after, and I
- 8:52was in the minority. I thought he was a little shaky
- 8:54at points in his freshman season.
- 8:55Obviously hit a couple of big kicks.
- 8:57I was dead wrong. He's proven to be a very, very
- 9:00reliable kicker. So in the little bit of special
- 9:03teams that we got to see in practice, that was actually one
- 9:05thing that jumped out at me. They were doing these drills.
- 9:09They got the teams to quickly run off the sideline, get set
- 9:12and kick kind of like a high pressure.
- 9:14Like if the, you know, they had no timeouts and there was only 8
- 9:17seconds on the clock, can they quickly get set to snap it and
- 9:21kick it in time for a field goal?
- 9:23And Kyle Karate was just launching missiles from 4547
- 9:27yards with ease. Like I wish we got to see him go
- 9:30a little further back but he was not having any issues at all.
- 9:34I know last year he had some injury problems that was
- 9:37limiting him, but he looked healthy.
- 9:39He looked great and those kicks were firmly through the
- 9:42uprights, had lots of distance on them.
- 9:44I wish we got to see him go even further, but he he looked really
- 9:47good. Eugene, let's jump into some
- 9:49basketball news from yesterday. Mason Williams, we didn't get to
- 9:53see this year because of the hip injury.
- 9:55After his medical red shirt, he is back in the portal.
- 9:58There's been some speculation about that.
- 9:59Anything more to the story? Just weird.
- 10:02A guy comes in, gets hurt, now he's back in the portal again.
- 10:06It's not like he's got extra tape to show people, right?
- 10:09No, yeah, no extra tape. Just also kind of surprising to
- 10:13me, honestly, I felt like his skill set would have definitely
- 10:16fit in well with Iowa State. He was just another
- 10:18sharpshooting threat, just an all around score.
- 10:21He was the go to guy at Eastern Washington.
- 10:24And, you know, would you figure once he's healthy, he'll be able
- 10:26to be a big contributor of sorts at maybe in the rotation, maybe
- 10:30he starts, whatever it may be, but they could have definitely
- 10:33used another guy like him. Really surprising.
- 10:36I'm still trying to hammer out more details, but it is
- 10:40confirmed that he has answered the portal.
- 10:42He hasn't been expected to make a formal or public announcement
- 10:47in the coming days. But, yeah, just a little bit
- 10:49surprising to me. I thought that, you know, just
- 10:51from what I'd heard from TJ Alto Burger and some of his
- 10:54teammates, when he was able to return to practice over the last
- 10:56couple of months, he had a good attitude.
- 10:59They seemed to enjoy it and was just really working hard at
- 11:01practice. So it was just a little thing to
- 11:03get excited for once he was eligible and able to play next
- 11:06season, but looks like it'll be somewhere else.
- 11:10Is is this does I'm staying have a new wrestling coach?
- 11:13What happened to dresser is that is this true?
- 11:16Eugene, have you seen this I? Brent, I have not heard.
- 11:21Brent Metcalf is elevated to head coach at Iowa State as
- 11:27Kevin Dresser transitions to a new role.
- 11:31Really. I've seen this for the first
- 11:33time it. Just happened on the yeah.
- 11:35Are you seeing this trend? I'm not.
- 11:36Yo where where you seeing it boy?
- 11:41What? What's the account?
- 11:42I don't want to say. You you did you get duped.
- 11:46I don't know, that's why I'm asking you guys.
- 11:48And apparently I might have. I'm going to, you know what, let
- 11:51me go to the source. Yes, cyclonefanatic.com.
- 11:54Oh no. Hang on a second boys, there is
- 12:01a 2 page thread. Ben.
- 12:03CAF head coach, IO State Wrestling.
- 12:05Pat Mineo I see has it. He is very well plugged in.
- 12:09That's OK. So that's the guy that I saw,
- 12:10Pat Mineo. Yes, and I see his tweet from
- 12:1440. 5 minutes ago SO. This is new to everybody.
- 12:17Yeah. Look at us breaking a little
- 12:19wrestling news and having this, you know, what scared out of me
- 12:22after I put it out there that it was.
- 12:24I got duped again. Munchilovich, what are we going
- 12:27to know? What do we know at this point?
- 12:30It's tick, tick, tick. That portal's about to.
- 12:32I mean, a he's put an item state kind of in a tenuous spot,
- 12:37right? Because they've got it
- 12:39ultimately. Do we need to replace you?
- 12:41Are you going to be staying? Do we need to come up with more
- 12:44money? Where do you think this all
- 12:45stands right now, Eugene? I, I feel like whatever decision
- 12:50is going to happen, I feel like it's, it should be real soon.
- 12:53I, I could only imagine just looking at the way that TJ
- 12:56Alsenberger and his staff have operated in the past and you
- 12:58look at when it goes into the transfer portal, they usually
- 13:02just nab guys in a string. So I feel like there's been a
- 13:04lot of honest conversations behind the scenes since the
- 13:08portal opened on April 7th to just figure out where, where is
- 13:11Milan at? Is he saying is he going, is he
- 13:13going to GoPro? You know what, what are the
- 13:15best, you know, what's he feeling and what can Iowa State
- 13:18do to support him in that endeavour or whatever path he
- 13:21picks? So I feel like it, you know,
- 13:23these negotiations or if you want to call them negotiations
- 13:26or talks have definitely been happening.
- 13:28I feel like a decision should come very, very soon.
- 13:31I wouldn't be surprised if it comes today or, or some point
- 13:34over the weekend, but I I do feel like we're going to hear
- 13:37some sort of announcement really soon.
- 13:40That also leads to the portal. And what is it about TJ and his
- 13:45staff that they just have such a knack of finding the right guys?
- 13:50I mean, look at a guy like Blake Buchanan this year.
- 13:53You kind of look at the numbers at Virginia, how's this going to
- 13:55work and is a rock solid starter for you.
- 13:57They have an ability to guy get not the guys that are most
- 14:00expensive that you have to spend the most more just to fit their
- 14:03culture. How does TJ Altelberger and the
- 14:05staff do that? I think it's just the first, the
- 14:08identification of talent and and just upside.
- 14:10You look at Joshua Jefferson too, like they picked the guy
- 14:13who was coming off of a knee injury was that St.
- 14:16Mary's played well, but you couldn't really tell.
- 14:19Blake Buchanan was another guy. That's a great example that you
- 14:21brought up there where he felt like he was underutilized,
- 14:24misused, that Virginia comes in and and thrives in his new role.
- 14:28I think that also Berger and his staff do a good job of figuring
- 14:32out, you know, which personnel or which players can fit their
- 14:35basketball schemes, their exes and O, but also just the culture
- 14:38fit as well. It seems like everyone who comes
- 14:39into this program, they're very well aware as to what the
- 14:43expectation is the the high standards, the crazy practices,
- 14:47the crazy workouts and things that they do.
- 14:50You know, you look at even the freshmen too, like I remember
- 14:52Jamar and Bateman coming in and telling me that he's excited for
- 14:55this to be the hardest thing he's ever done in his life.
- 14:58And even then, like going through like somewhere he's
- 15:00like, this is very hard, but I know it'll be rewarding.
- 15:03And you, you hear similar messages like that from all the
- 15:06guys who come into Iowa State for the first time.
- 15:08So I feel like for TJ and his staff, it's a combination of
- 15:12identifying the right guys that'll fit what they want to
- 15:14do, X's and OYS, but also just the culture wise.
- 15:17Because I feel like, you know, you could, you could have the
- 15:19right guy, but be just mentally or emotionally or spiritually
- 15:23just doesn't fit or gel with what they're looking for in the
- 15:26program. That's also not going to work
- 15:27out. I know that that Tommy Birch's
- 15:30beat is the women's sports women's basketball beg your
- 15:33pardon, but are you guys hear anything you bump into each
- 15:36other in the in the sports room, newsroom, the water cooler,
- 15:41whatever any anything on Audie Crooks at all.
- 15:43You hearing anything as to even where she's visiting Eugene?
- 15:47Yeah, so, so I last spoke to Tommy when the the whole thing
- 15:51first went down. I would love to.
- 15:54I haven't seen him since, but I would love to know where she is
- 15:57currently looking or or going in.
- 16:00But that was definitely a big blow to Iowa State women's
- 16:03basketball and just the Cyclones in general.
- 16:05And just seeing that the mass exodus that they've had to deal
- 16:07with. I'm very curious.
- 16:09I know that they just got a commitment yesterday.
- 16:13Yeah. They're so they're starting to
- 16:14rebuild the the roster there, but to just lose the type of
- 16:17talent that they've had and just see that that she just the sheer
- 16:21exodus. Definitely, definitely a lot of
- 16:23work for Bill family and his staff.
- 16:25Good stuff Eugene repay Des Moines Register Eugene what are
- 16:28football availabilities for you guys this coming week?
- 16:31We're. Going to have Monday and
- 16:32Wednesday and possibly a little cameo with Jimmy Rogers, so
- 16:36looking forward to it now. Good stuff, Eugene.
- 16:38Repay Eugene. We'll talk to you next Friday if
- 16:40your schedule allows. We hope it does.
- 16:42Thanks for doing this, Eugene. Appreciate it.
- 16:44Have a good weekend. Thank you guys so much and enjoy
- 16:46the weekend as well. Absolutely, Eugene Repay, Des
- 16:48Moines Registers. We check in on Iowa State.
- 16:52So you're breaking news. Well, I mean, what's the guy's
- 16:56name that broke it? Pat Mineo.
- 16:57Pat Mineo. He's he's an Iowa hater.
- 17:01He's a Penn State guy. Is he?
- 17:03I think MMA background, if memory serves, something like
- 17:05that. But yeah, he's he is well
- 17:07connected and well sourced inside the wrestling industry.
- 17:10So Kevin Dresser hands it off to Brett Metcalf.
- 17:14That's his report. Brett Metcalf, Who a lot of
- 17:19Hawkeye fans were hoping. That was the heir apparent.
- 17:21That he was going to come back home, that he was going to make
- 17:23his way back to Iowa City, maybe take over for the brands.
- 17:26Well, I would stay. Beat him to the punch.
- 17:28And so now you. Think that might be part of it?
- 17:30Oh, absolutely. I think it's a a significant
- 17:34part of it of getting ahead of it before he gets hired away to
- 17:37take over back where he wrestled and won two NCAA wrestling
- 17:40championship. So definitely that is a part of
- 17:43it. But Dresser would have had to
- 17:45acquiesce to that and agree to that.
- 17:46Right. I'm sure, yeah.
- 17:48I mean, if that's the case, good for him.
- 17:50Kevin Dresser is also an Iowa guy.
- 17:52Yeah, but that's putting the program ahead of himself if this
- 17:54is the case. Yes, and that's for all reports.
- 17:57That is the kind of guy that Kevin Dresser.
- 17:59Is I mean that that tells me a lot about him, and positively.
- 18:02Yes, no doubt. And then I'm sure they'll find a
- 18:05role and maybe it's a fundraising, you know, goal for,
- 18:07for Iowa State. Transitions into a new role was
- 18:09part of what Pat Mineo put out there.
- 18:14And it goes hand in hand. Iowa announced after the a
- 18:17replacement and assistant coaches.
- 18:18And this is where a lot of people are getting excited.
- 18:20New blood, new ideas. They bring in Jacob Warner and
- 18:24no disrespect to Jacob Warner and Iowa wrestler.
- 18:28Pretty boring style as a wrestler bore the same.
- 18:31No outside ideas. I think this is leading to some
- 18:35frustration with Iowa wrestling fans is OK Give Tom Terry Brands
- 18:40another year. That's fine.
- 18:41Give them an opportunity to continue to rebuild and see if
- 18:44they can come up with the way that you're going to be able to
- 18:47unseat not just now Penn State, but Oklahoma State and what they
- 18:49were doing this year. And he just hire sort of
- 18:52retread. That's not.
- 18:53A but same old, same old, same old, more the same.
- 18:56Yes, a lot of frustration. Speaking of message boards, over
- 18:59at Hawkeye Report, Tom Kakert's wrestling board and that thing,
- 19:03really, that is the worst of the worst, is it?
- 19:06I never go. There, that's that's worse than
- 19:08Cyclone Fanatic that that is. Now come ugly.
- 19:11That's ugly. That sets the bottom I.
- 19:13Personally, I go to Cyclone Report or I go to Cyclone
- 19:17Insider. The people that help us, that's
- 19:19who I go to. I go to Alec Bussey's board.
- 19:22I go to of course we talked to Mondays and Bill Seals and
- 19:26Cyclone Ford. That's where I go to.
- 19:27You like to go over to that other.
- 19:28One. No, I go to all of them.
- 19:29I know you do. I go to all of them, but they
- 19:31you want to go into a wild, Wild West.
- 19:33The Iowa wrestling board on Tom's website.
- 19:37That is crazy you. Can guarantee I'll be over there
- 19:41tonight, especially with this news.
- 19:42Oh, absolutely. Yes, that's a good call.
- 19:44You'll get some better taping out of that.
- 19:46A lot of spelling mistakes. Well.
- 19:49Lot of spelling. Mistakes.
- 19:51All right, we'll get to Las Vegas next.
- 19:53Our friend Mike Pom, VP of operations at Circa Sports.
- 19:58What's going on at the Masters before we go to a break?
- 20:01Who do we have a new leader in the clubhouse?
- 20:04Rory McIlroy? The defending?
- 20:07And how about Tyrell Hatton? Yes. 76 under, 7 under today.
- 20:11Hatton is he's within one stroke.
- 20:13Justin Rose not going away. Kepka making a little bit of a
- 20:17charge. Patrick Reed is 4 under, shaping
- 20:21up to be a pretty decent. Board and right now we are four
- 20:26over is the cut line. Where's Robert McIntyre?
- 20:30Is he making his charge? No, he's not.
- 20:33Where is Jon ROM? Jon ROM is is he still golfing?
- 20:39You know what I have to project a cut line of three over all the
- 20:42fours are done. That just changed.
- 20:44So it was a tie for 50th and we're right on the cusp.
- 20:48It's going to be right on that 3-4 because 51st now is a tie
- 20:52for 51st. That means that four will not
- 20:54make it AB3. A lot of movements still to
- 20:56happen though. And Bryson's at 4 over, ROM is
- 20:59at 4 over. So if you got top 10s, top 20's,
- 21:02the winds probably out the out the window, but you need your
- 21:06guys. Zach 6 under.
- 21:08He is finished for the day. Vegas next, Mike Palm, VP of
- 21:12operations, circus sports. Mike joins us on the other side,
- 21:16Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network 130.
- 21:26Miller and Condon, welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network, Trent
- 21:29and I with you until just before 2.
- 21:32Still to come, Trent's plays of the day.
- 21:34We'll get to those circus Sports sponsors, that daily segment
- 21:37coming up here in about 20 minutes.
- 21:39Let's head to Las Vegas. He's the VP of operations at
- 21:42Circus Sports. Are you in one of the boasted
- 21:44circle watching the wall to wall masters cover Mike Palm?
- 21:47Good to talk to you. Where are you at right now?
- 21:50Well, in a booth and then I just went and did Stormy and JVP and
- 21:55now I'm going up to my office to find a quiet space to do this.
- 21:59Nice. So Trent and I've discussed the
- 22:01masters and how much handle there is, how much rights and
- 22:04how much it dwarfs the other majors just because as you guys
- 22:07have had this on the board forever.
- 22:10Is this going to any records about to be set this weekend,
- 22:13Mike, or do you anticipate that? I say no because of no Tiger.
- 22:19I think if Tiger was here we would have got a lot of right on
- 22:23him on Miss or Make the Cut and I think without Tiger it's just
- 22:27really hard to break any records.
- 22:30Tiger, Phil and. Move the needle.
- 22:34You got the top of the list and kind of some boring guys with
- 22:37obviously Scheffler and the questions after his wife had a
- 22:40kid just a couple of weeks back. So you have that component to
- 22:42it. Jon ROM, who is absolutely
- 22:44leaking oil throughout the course of the first couple of
- 22:46days here, not a whole lot of buzz to it.
- 22:49What is something like that? I mean, are we talking about
- 22:52it's going to impact it by 510% or is it, do you guys really
- 22:56feel it when there just isn't as much buzz overall for a masters?
- 23:00It hurts it the buzz just that creates the recreational right
- 23:04Trent? I mean that the pros that bet
- 23:06golfers, semi pros that do it really don't care.
- 23:10But without compelling storylines, people tend to drift
- 23:13away. And you see, we get this big
- 23:15bump on Saturday and Sunday, and I'm worried it's not going to be
- 23:18as big this year because of the lack of storyline.
- 23:21Who you keeping an eye on, Mike, as far as a circa, is there
- 23:24somebody that would not be good for circa that's toward the top
- 23:27of the leaderboard? You know, we really didn't even
- 23:33take a bet on Rory, which is surprising.
- 23:36Burns is great for us. Patrick Reed is a loser.
- 23:40Justin Rose is probably the person closest.
- 23:43That's the biggest loser for us. Darkly is a small loser.
- 23:49Yeah, Ober's a small loser. So you're really the guys at the
- 23:53top right now are are terrific results for us.
- 23:57The new updated Circa app that we've talked about here for the
- 24:00last, so quite a while now as though we were the test pilot
- 24:03here in the state of Iowa getting things launched.
- 24:06And now you guys have it in Missouri and the updates that
- 24:08are happening across the board as it pertains something like
- 24:11golf, the live betting angle to it when we get into Sunday.
- 24:14If you want to fire, how much upgrade have you seen as it
- 24:17pertains to something like that? With golf betting, people can do
- 24:20what's the Masters has already been underway.
- 24:23You know, that's the biggest sport that the live betting
- 24:26impacts and people might say, oh, it's basketball.
- 24:29Oh it's, you know, soccer. It's actually golf because it's
- 24:33hard. When you book it manually like
- 24:36we do at a commercial, you can't do any golf in round.
- 24:39And that's where so much golf handle is done.
- 24:42I dare to say probably 70% of golf handle at some of these
- 24:46bigger joints is done on the on the end game.
- 24:49So that is definitely, and that's when we talked about
- 24:52getting the, you know, the stadium live and all that.
- 24:56Developing our own continuous end game.
- 24:58Golf was the sport that we thought it would impact the
- 25:00most. Seems like it, yeah.
- 25:04I mean, I'm getting involved trying to trying to because all
- 25:07my guys, Mike, they're not going to make the cut.
- 25:09How about you personally? Did you, Did you back anybody
- 25:12before the tournament pre flop? Yeah, I made one bet not not on
- 25:16anybody to win. I called it my Ken Miller bet.
- 25:19I bet Fred Couples to make the cut and he gave me a nice ride
- 25:24for nine holes. Yeah, he did.
- 25:26Wonder. And then it went and then it was
- 25:28disaster time. But yeah, for for an old guy, I
- 25:31mean, he's the oldest guy ever to make the cut.
- 25:33He's made the second most cuts. And everybody said they thought
- 25:36he was in pretty good form. So at 4 1/2 to one, I thought it
- 25:39was worth a shot. Well, the summer is around the
- 25:41corner, people thinking about pool time and there's not a
- 25:44better pool in Las Vegas, I guess than what you have at
- 25:46Stadium Swim. And you guys have quite the
- 25:48offer coming up this summer. All in, fill us in a little bit
- 25:52and all the listeners out there on the details for people making
- 25:55their way out to Vegas this summer and an opportunity to
- 25:57save a bunch of money. Yeah, it's really terrific with
- 26:01our All in package. This is the third straight
- 26:04summer that we're doing it. And you know, it's, it's about
- 26:11simplicity. It's just like the struggles
- 26:13that people have with with airlines.
- 26:16And this is the cost of your ticket, except everything that
- 26:19you do is a fee. Being able to pay a flat price
- 26:23to stay two days, whether it's anytime Sunday, Monday, Monday,
- 26:26Tuesday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Wednesday, Thursday and then get
- 26:31all the credit back from from the package.
- 26:38So for $400.00, it's two nights, you get $100 dining credit, you
- 26:45get $100 beverage credit and you get a three day bedded stadium
- 26:49swim one of those days. So it's a terrific summer.
- 26:52You know, we got World Cup this summer.
- 26:54We're seeing a lot of reservations come in around the
- 26:56World Cup semi finals and, and it should be and we see that as
- 27:00a big trend already. So there's no resort fees,
- 27:04taxes, county taxes, parking, you know, all that stuff that
- 27:07you get tacked on when you go stay somewhere and you're
- 27:11getting 200 of the 400 backing up and, and a no minimum day
- 27:14bed. So I I think it's a heck of a
- 27:16deal. It really is like you say, about
- 27:18100 for dining, 100 for drinks, no resort fees, no taxes.
- 27:23That's that's certainly a very, very good offer.
- 27:26No doubt about that. Mike, I wanna move.
- 27:29Are you done with Golf GC? That's God did you?
- 27:32I'm sure you were watching if your schedule allows last night,
- 27:34stars Wild. I was.
- 27:35I was locked and loaded on that game just because these are the
- 27:38two teams are going to play in the first round of the playoffs.
- 27:41Sadly, one of them is going to go home.
- 27:42I think they're both talented enough in a lot of areas to to
- 27:45maybe make go on a long cup run. But when I watched this wild
- 27:48team, Mike, I'm really worried about the goaltending.
- 27:51I think that they solved a lot of their issues at the trade
- 27:54deadline. They got bigger, they got
- 27:56tougher. Obviously they were well skilled
- 27:58with Hughes coming over, Caprice off the top ten player, I think
- 28:01closer to five than 10, but I'm worried about that goaltending.
- 28:05Where are you on the Minnesota Wild?
- 28:08I you listen, I, I, Is it the goaltending fault you have two
- 28:11defensemen that take their forwards?
- 28:13In. Hughes favor, Hughes in favor
- 28:16both take their forwards and I read an article of guys blaming
- 28:19the goaltending hasn't been good enough.
- 28:21You've got 2 defensemen that don't defend.
- 28:23That's a problem. They needed to get that center
- 28:26that Robert Thomas or somebody. They didn't.
- 28:28I, I don't think Gus or Wall said have been bad.
- 28:32I really don't. Here's, here's the problem.
- 28:35I think that when you handicap the playoffs, you not just
- 28:39handicapped the talent of a team, but teams that have mental
- 28:42blocks against other teams, right?
- 28:44So in the West, I think Minnesota has a Dallas problem,
- 28:49I think Colorado has a Dallas problem, and I think Dallas has
- 28:53an Edmonton problem. In the East, I think Carolina
- 28:57has a Tampa problem. I think Tampa has a Buffalo and
- 29:00Montreal problem. I think Montreal has a Buffalo
- 29:04problem and an Ottawa problem, and I think that Ottawa's got a
- 29:08mentally weak goal Fender in Olmarch.
- 29:09So all those things sort of come into it.
- 29:13I bet a long time ago, stars eliminated in first round plus
- 29:16145 because I thought the Wild could beat them.
- 29:19I don't know. It's going to be 1 hell of a
- 29:21series. Any dark horses, anybody out of
- 29:23nowhere that can come out of the wild card and at least give you
- 29:26a little bit of run, maybe not to win the whole thing, but say
- 29:28get to Eastern Western Conference final and if you got
- 29:32a ticket to get there, maybe you can get a little hedging
- 29:34opportunity. Anybody jump off for you, Mike?
- 29:37So I'm considering two teams to add that I don't have.
- 29:41What I have is Colorado in the West and I have Minnesota to win
- 29:46it all and I have Tampa to win these.
- 29:50So now I'm worried about Tampa being a three seat here in this
- 29:54division and happened to beat Montreal and Buffalo.
- 29:56So I'm considering adding Montreal or Ottawa.
- 29:59And I went through every book in Nevada last night.
- 30:02Kenny and the Senators, who right now are the number two
- 30:05wild card. Montreal could be the one seat
- 30:07in the Atlantic, right? The Senators are shorter in all
- 30:11futures than the Canadian. You tell me how that makes
- 30:14sense. It it doesn't, I watch a lot of
- 30:17Ottawa. I lost a lot Of Montreal.
- 30:19I think, wow, I'm surprised. Who?
- 30:22So are you going to take both of those Canadian franchises?
- 30:25I almost feel bad to take Ottawa if they're they're cheaper than
- 30:28the Canadians. I'm definitely going to take the
- 30:29Canadians to win the east. The Canadians are 15 to 1 and
- 30:33the Senators are 14 to one. I've already bet the Canadians.
- 30:36I don't know if I want to bet the senators.
- 30:38They should be. If the Canadians are 15 to one,
- 30:40they should be 22 to one. I've got Tampa, Carolina,
- 30:44Colorado, Minnesota, Dallas. Those are my five Cup teams.
- 30:47Yeah, well, you know, Attinger is, to me always the question
- 30:52mark there. Yeah, I do want to tell you one
- 30:56game that I love tomorrow. Well, there's fifteen of them.
- 30:59Which one are you choosing? Six of them.
- 31:02Both teams have playoff implications.
- 31:04I love is that although this is the Malinsky A-Team coming off a
- 31:07road trip, coming home, so you fade him the first game.
- 31:10I really like the Predators against the Wild.
- 31:13Tomorrow, Allen will get to start.
- 31:16I thought Allen was much better on this road trip than Sorrows.
- 31:19This big goal. He doesn't have to move.
- 31:21He can sit back in the goal and be very calm.
- 31:23He was dominant against the Ducks.
- 31:24The Ducks put up 45 shots on the other night.
- 31:27He shut him out against the Wild team that I believe that after
- 31:30they lost in Dallas last night, we'll shut it down these last
- 31:33three games. Makes sense.
- 31:34They're going to be resigned. They're going to be resigned to
- 31:36the three seat Predators at a plus price.
- 31:38I bet them at plus 1:15 tomorrow over the Wild.
- 31:41Are the ducks going to get in? Are you sure that they're going
- 31:44to get in? We got.
- 31:44No, there's only three games left.
- 31:46Yeah, yeah. I tried to make the argument on
- 31:48Wednesday with Mitch and Paul. The Ducks were in trouble.
- 31:50They lost six in a row. How about the stat that before
- 31:53last night, in all 22 games since the Olympic break, the
- 31:57Ducks had trailed? I mean, they were just playing.
- 31:59They were just, yes, they were just playing terrible.
- 32:01The win last night I think really solidified it for them.
- 32:04I think San Jose's out. I'd love to bet Nash plus 475,
- 32:09but the problem is the Kings have an extra game, a point
- 32:11league, and they play 3 bad teams that the season.
- 32:14I think. I just think it's too much for
- 32:16Nashville. Ducks never LED 1 nothing in any
- 32:18of those games. They never, no, they, they,
- 32:21they, they trailed and all 22, they never LED wire to wire
- 32:26until they beat the Sharks last night wire to wire.
- 32:29One more hockey thing for you, because I was watching last
- 32:31night and I'm sure there might have been some people in the
- 32:33book doing the same. Michigan, Denver in the Frozen 4
- 32:37out there in Vegas. Are you seeing many people?
- 32:40I would guess the Michigan people probably showing up there
- 32:42at Circa and North. Dakota people too.
- 32:45And I think Ken was surprised that who the favorite is in this
- 32:48one with Wisconsin being the underdog against Denver in the
- 32:51championship. What are you guys seeing with
- 32:52the Frozen 4 in Vegas for the first time?
- 32:55So this is a really interesting circus story.
- 32:58So North Dakota had planned a parade on Fremont Street and a
- 33:01big gathering at Bar Canada at 4:00 PM today.
- 33:04Canceled, they all went home. Oh my.
- 33:06And Michigan had planned an event from 5:00 to 8:00 at
- 33:08Legacy Club, canceled. They all went home.
- 33:12I, I don't, I'm not surprised. I mean, I yesterday I bet the
- 33:18under six in the first game with Wisconsin and North Dakota just
- 33:21because the North Dakota goal center hadn't given up any goals
- 33:23in it. You watched that game was
- 33:25dominant, but they were a huge underdog to North Dakota.
- 33:29Denver was a much smaller underdog than Michigan.
- 33:32I thought Denver would be a 14150 favorite in the finals and
- 33:36it's it's their 160 right now at Circa.
- 33:39But Wisconsin has played really well.
- 33:41I thought they they made North Dakota look bad yesterday.
- 33:44North Dakota wasn't generating any chances at all.
- 33:47They got the late six on five goal.
- 33:48Other than that, nothing. And you would have expected
- 33:51being down to to nothing going into the third.
- 33:53It would have been a barrage by the by, by the Sioux.
- 33:56It really wasn't. Airplanes packed leaving Grand
- 33:59Forks. I saw some of the pictures of
- 34:01all the folks on the planes and heading back to Grand Forks.
- 34:04Oh my God, good stuff. Mike Palm.
- 34:06Mike, I see this NFL schedule comes out.
- 34:09What did I see the 14th or the 16th somewhere around that time
- 34:12frame? Is that what you guys at Circa
- 34:14are anticipating so you can go forward with Survivor etcetera?
- 34:20Yeah, that's that's correct, Katie, you're absolutely right.
- 34:23Yeah, going to be fascinating. Good stuff.
- 34:25Mike Palm, VP of Operations at Circa Sports.
- 34:27Mike, thank you. Appreciate the time as always.
- 34:30We'll talk to you next week. Thank you, Mike.
- 34:33Thank you guys. Have a great.
- 34:34Week Yep, you do the same Mike Palm VP of operations at Circa

- 34:59You don't even have to leave the resort.
- 35:01You truly don't. Or dine or bar, Credit, Legacy
- 35:05Club, the Long Bar, any of them. That's a hell of a deal. 400
- 35:10bucks. And no resort fees?
- 35:12No. Resort and a day bed at Stadium
- 35:14Swim. It's not too shabby either.
- 35:16No, it's for sure. Yeah, really good deal.
- 35:18Yep. You're looking to go out there.
- 35:20If you haven't yet, you've been listening to Trent and I talk
- 35:21about it for years. Do yourself a favor if you're a
- 35:24sports fan. Yeah, you know, you don't need
- 35:25to be. You don't.
- 35:26I mean, it's it's, it puts it over the top.
- 35:28For us, because we are. My wife loves it.
- 35:30She does. My wife was blown away anyways.
- 35:36Now you got the juices slowing. Yeah, I know.
- 35:38Mine too. We got two months left.
- 35:40I know I just so here's here's my problem.
- 35:42This is a good a time as any to talk about what I'm going to do.
- 35:45I was asked to go back to Prairie Meadows and, and I'm
- 35:49going to take and I already have I, I've accepted the
- 35:52opportunity. So I'm going to be the track
- 35:54analyst, not the not the race caller, the track analyst.
- 35:57They're trying to build out their YouTube channel.
- 36:00So the live races are on YouTube and I'm going to have a
- 36:03significant role in that leading up to the race, after the race,
- 36:07etcetera. Going to be out there every race
- 36:09night. But in my retirement, working 76
- 36:11days a year doesn't sound like too bad a job, right?
- 36:15And I'm off from late like third weekend of September until the
- 36:19first week in May. That works out pretty well for
- 36:22you. It really does.
- 36:23And it's opening day on Kentucky Derby Day, which is the first
- 36:27Saturday in May. So they're going to race at
- 36:285:00. They'll have one race, then
- 36:30we'll pause the race card. But yeah, yes, as I talked about
- 36:33the last couple of days, I'm running into a meeting.
- 36:35Where the Hell's he going? Right.
- 36:37Who's he trying to kid? Normally it's a meeting to get
- 36:39in front of your television to watch after your baseball.
- 36:41Right or a meeting with jet to take him for a for a walk.
- 36:44But but I'm going back to Prairie Meadows, which is really
- 36:46cool for a couple of reasons. AI love it and B the reason I'm
- 36:50in the state to begin with is Prairie Meadows in 1989 reached
- 36:55out to me when the the guy that was calling the races after 11
- 36:58weeks saw the writing on the wall.
- 36:59So this is going to work and and decided to move on and they
- 37:04needed a race caller. So I took the job and a week
- 37:06later we were bankrupt. That's crazy, right?
- 37:09Left my country, left my job, left my family and but obviously
- 37:14it survived and it's thrived. And it closed in 91 and that's
- 37:17when I went to Denver, but I came back.
- 37:18So I'm going to begin my United States work career in Altoona
- 37:24and end it. That's awesome.
- 37:26I'm very, I'm very happy for you.
- 37:29I could definitely see the, the extra pep in your step here
- 37:32lately as this was coming to fruition and and to kind of have
- 37:36that full circle moment and to have your retirement working 76
- 37:40days a year, that's not bad. That sounds good.
- 37:42No, it does. So we're going to build up
- 37:43perrymeadows.com and going to do weekly vlog.
- 37:45I'm going to do a racing piece, a casino piece, a sports betting
- 37:49piece, and I think probably once a year I'll do a, or once rather
- 37:53you, you're all do one of you know, I'll get a Tom Kakert when
- 37:57I was playing a big game or one of our Cyclone guys or Paul
- 38:00Allen or, you know, not not a ton, just just one a week do A4
- 38:05segment vlog. But that's what I'm going to be
- 38:07doing. And I'm excited to go back to
- 38:09Prairie Meadows and to work for a guy that he gives me credit
- 38:13for starting his career. And all I did was open a door
- 38:16for him and he walked through him.
- 38:17And that's Brian Arilko, who John and I spoke with on the
- 38:20radio a lot when he was the head of the Iowa Racing and Gaming
- 38:23Commission. So I'm going to go back and do
- 38:25that and I'm going to be out there every night and I'm going
- 38:27to be talking horses and shaking hands and doing those type of
- 38:31things so. Congratulations.
- 38:33Thank you. I'm I'm pumped to do it pumped
- 38:35to do it leave radio after 30 years and go back to what where
- 38:38I started and where I'll end PRM We'll take the time out
- 38:43transplays the day or next circus sports sponsor those
- 38:45Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:48I'm Melanie Condon welcome back final couple of minutes here on
- 38:51a Friday. Boy, Rory's threatening to run
- 38:53away with this thing. He's 8 under.
- 38:56Justin Rose right now, second, along with Sam Burns, those two
- 38:59golfers at 5 under. So Roy with a three shot lead,
- 39:03he is threw 4. Hold Bush off to a good start,
- 39:06set at least three under through 4 on today's round.
- 39:09It's still early. Yeah, moving day tomorrow.
- 39:12Yes, absolutely. But three shot lead already.
- 39:17So I had to get involved just to have something because my guys
- 39:19aren't going to make the cut. I bet Kepka, I just was good
- 39:24Price 16 to one, OK, he's 300, he's 5 off the lead.
- 39:29Give it a whirl. He was even par after the round
- 39:31yesterday. Got 300 today through 17 so at
- 39:35least he's going to be on that leaderboard.
- 39:37Have an opportunity, give yourself a shot.
- 39:39Something. To root for.
- 39:40Yes, absolutely. Although I mean, it'd be hard
- 39:42not to root for Roy to go back-to-back or if Justin Rose
- 39:44makes her. What if it's those two dudes in
- 39:46a playoff again? Who do you root for this year?
- 39:48And I mean, Rory was obviously the public was all over him that
- 39:52that changes this year, wouldn't it, in our hypothetical?
- 39:55I would think. I think so.
- 39:56Too root for the old guy. Yes.
- 39:58Right, had a hell of a career. It's my age.
- 40:01Well, he's old for golf. Well, not old for golf, but old
- 40:04for the PGA. He's old because I remember
- 40:08vividly. We are the exact same age, both
- 40:10born in 1980 and sitting at Sunny Bray Golf Course working
- 40:15at the bar my senior year of high school.
- 40:17Where's Sunny Bray? Oh, Sage.
- 40:18Oh, Sage. Yep.
- 40:19And 9 hole. 18 hole. 9 hole. Yeah, I love it.
- 40:22Private. Yep, Oh, was.
- 40:24It yes couldn't and good thing they had youth memberships
- 40:27because my family was not afraid to be there and also worked at
- 40:30the golf course and watching this guy my same age as I'm in
- 40:33high school in the British Open and here he is still today.
- 40:39What was par 3530 do you remember?
- 40:4135 yeah, only one par five, that is number 9 that comes up and #8
- 40:47#2 was considered by the Des Moines Register, one of the 18
- 40:52most difficult holes being the state of Iowa.
- 40:54I'll. Be damned, how many years ago
- 40:56was that? I think that article came out
- 40:58like in the 80s, something like that.
- 40:59They had the newspaper clipping, of course, up in the clubhouse.
- 41:02Did you have a I'm sure, Did you have an alternate tee for those
- 41:05who wanted to play 18 and play this or this tee box and then
- 41:08another tee box? Any of those.
- 41:09We had to have a lot of alternatives because one of the
- 41:12holes, two of the holes in fact go across the river, across the
- 41:15Cedar River. So a par three that you hit
- 41:17across and then coming back a par Why?
- 41:19Is the river. There may be.
- 41:21Like a Creek. No, it's.
- 41:23OK, it's a river, all right. And there's a floating bridge or
- 41:26there was a floating bridge. Well, when the water was up, you
- 41:30couldn't put the floating bridge in 'cause it float away.
- 41:33So there were alternate holes that had to be put in because of
- 41:36that. When the bridge was out, that
- 41:37meant you had to go that direction.
- 41:39And one of my favorite stories, my freshman year of high school,
- 41:42kid a year older than me. So you hit your shot across, you
- 41:45bring, you know, a wedge. If you didn't hit the green,
- 41:48your putter and then your driver to come back across.
- 41:49You don't take your whole bag because that floating bridge is
- 41:53rickety. I mean, you're moving back and
- 41:56forth. Can bring the roll back the
- 41:58bridge now. Yes, yeah, I think they have
- 42:00something a little bit more sturdy.
- 42:01OK, good. But brings his whole bag over
- 42:03his shoulder, gets a little shaken, a little bit.
- 42:06All of his clubs, all 13 of them, dumped into the Cedar
- 42:09River, never to be seen again. How?
- 42:10Deep was the cedar. River not very deep I bet, but
- 42:13it was also late March, early April.
- 42:16You're not jumping on those walls.
- 42:17No, a little cool. After some McGregor irons.
- 42:19Unless you make a hole in one, then you're jumping.
- 42:22In, then you're jumping in. All right, have a good weekend.
- 42:24You too. Thank you, brother.
- 42:26And to all of our audience as well.
- 42:28Coming up next off the bench, Sean Roberts, Lucas Strain take
- 42:31you until 5:00 on Monday morning at 6:00 AM bright and early.
- 42:35Heather and Alec on with the first quarter, we're Miller and
- 42:39Condon. Trent and I are here every
- 42:41Monday through Friday to talk sports with you from noon to two
- 42:45on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
