- 3:40Speaker 2: hot shot today.
- 3:41Speaker 6: I'll try Lady Biden, the fifth of Jamaica.
- 3:44Speaker 2: I got it straight from the chockey. Okay, business is over. Yeah,
- 3:47Speaker 2: but you're gonna tell us what you're doing? You mean
- 3:49Speaker 2: you haven't heard why I'm doing public relations for the
- 3:51Speaker 2: Maharaja of Jennifer.
- 3:53Speaker 3: What I thought the papers that he didn't want any publicity.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Look, Patsy, how can you keep a guy like that
- 3:58Speaker 2: off the front pages?
- 3:59Speaker 5: He's Yeo sing a romantic and he's got more money
- 4:02Speaker 5: than the mint.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Oh did you see that two page spread and dispatch
- 4:04Speaker 2: about his diamonds?
- 4:05Speaker 3: I did?
- 4:06Speaker 4: What what's that big diamond?
- 4:07Speaker 2: Called the one in his turban a star of evil?
- 4:10Speaker 2: And you know how much that stone weighs? How much
- 4:13Speaker 2: over one hundred carrage. It's worth a quarter of a
- 4:15Speaker 2: million bucks. A diamond of the first water.
- 4:17Speaker 3: Why do they always call them diamonds of the first water?
- 4:20Speaker 2: Maybe because a really clear diamond it's completely invisible in
- 4:23Speaker 2: pure water.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Oh hey, hey, here comes his nib to my house?
- 4:26Speaker 2: Really? And is he always going wrong with a couple
- 4:29Speaker 2: of Russian wolfhounds and a half a dozen attendants in
- 4:32Speaker 2: full costumes. Sure that's royalty for you, hey, kids, snap
- 4:36Speaker 2: to attention, Here comes his majesty.
- 4:37Speaker 4: Okay with the last say, look look at that diamond
- 4:40Speaker 4: in his turban.
- 4:42Speaker 3: Oh did you ever see anything like it in your life?
- 4:45Speaker 2: That have the famous star of evils feed? Yeah? Yeah, look, kids,
- 4:48Speaker 2: would you mind moving back a little?
- 4:49Speaker 5: His Nib doesn't like people crowning him feed.
- 4:53Speaker 2: They have to leave anyway, Remember Bessie, He came here
- 4:55Speaker 2: to find out that the Malcolm has in his mine.
- 5:07Speaker 2: It's my daughter Clutter. She's disappeared. She left the hotel
- 5:10Speaker 2: at ten o'clock this morning and I haven't seen her since.
- 5:12Speaker 4: That's only six hours ago. Mister Malcolm, there's nothing to
- 5:15Speaker 4: be alarmed the bad yet.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Is there? You don't know Linda, miss Bonde, She's only seventeen,
- 5:18Speaker 2: and she's led a very sheltered life. Sheltered sounds a
- 5:21Speaker 2: little odd for the daughter of a Hollywood producer. No
- 5:24Speaker 2: daughter of mine is going to marry an actor. I
- 5:25Speaker 2: know them too well, I say. But now about her disappearing, Oh,
- 5:29Speaker 2: I can't tell you much. Linda and I were going
- 5:31Speaker 2: to have lunch together, but when I went to a
- 5:32Speaker 2: room befo her, she was gone. The desk clerk said
- 5:35Speaker 2: she left the hotel at ten this morning. Frankly, mister Malcolm,
- 5:37Speaker 2: I think you're excited over nothing. I tell you I'm not.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Something's happened to her.
- 5:41Speaker 3: You mean she's met with an accident.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Either that or she's been kidnapped. Now, let's not jump
- 5:45Speaker 2: to conclusions. Perhaps it would be a good idea if
- 5:48Speaker 2: I took a look at Linda's room. What's all to
- 5:50Speaker 2: find out what clothes she's wearing today? After all, when
- 5:53Speaker 2: we send out the police alarm, we want to describe
- 5:55Speaker 2: how she's dressed. And I certainly plenty of dresses in
- 6:07Speaker 2: this closet. Mister Malcolm, can you tell them it's missing?
- 6:11Speaker 2: I'm afraid not caught her here. Wait a minute, her
- 6:14Speaker 2: leopard skin coats going I know she had that with her.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Did she bring all her things in these two bags? No?
- 6:19Speaker 2: There should be one more, and over night bag and
- 6:22Speaker 2: a jewel case that's missing too. In other words, she
- 6:25Speaker 2: left for a jewel case, an over night bag, and
- 6:27Speaker 2: a fur coat for which today's weather is entirely too warm.
- 6:30Speaker 2: I don't understand. It almost looks as though she's run away,
- 6:33Speaker 2: doesn't it. Yes, it almost does.
- 6:36Speaker 3: I need them over here?
- 6:38Speaker 2: What is it?
- 6:38Speaker 4: Pass it with this blotter on the writing desk. It's
- 6:40Speaker 4: a new one, but it has some pretty plain ink marks.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Onny all right, hold it up to the mayor.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Look, it's the end of a letter. I can make
- 6:50Speaker 3: out until tomorrow. Here's something else and then Darling, And
- 6:57Speaker 3: the thing is, you'll Linda.
- 6:58Speaker 2: That's impossible. Linda doesn't call it? What Dolly?
- 7:00Speaker 3: That part that's blood just before darling. That could be
- 7:05Speaker 3: a name.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I could starts for the capital are.
- 7:11Speaker 3: Could it be Robert?
- 7:13Speaker 2: Well? Look's going the wrong direction. M looks small like
- 7:18Speaker 2: Romney Romney Romney Lewis. So that's who it is? And
- 7:23Speaker 2: who is Romney Lewis? The star of my latest picture
- 7:25Speaker 2: and exactly the sort of man I've tried to keep
- 7:28Speaker 2: Lynda away from it.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I never heard of a movie star named Romney Lewis.
- 7:31Speaker 2: This is his first picture, and believe me, it'll be
- 7:33Speaker 2: his last. I picked him out of the gutter and
- 7:34Speaker 2: I'll kick him right back there. Hold on, mister Malcolm,
- 7:37Speaker 2: we don't know that your daughter. I'll handle this myself,
- 7:39Speaker 2: mister Carter, and I'll handle it my own way. Romney
- 7:42Speaker 2: Lewis included.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Nick Carter's office. Tacky bam speaking, is mister Carter?
- 7:56Speaker 2: The oh just a moment, it's thanks, thank god, it's speaking.
- 8:01Speaker 7: This is mister Pringle, manager of Brentwood Arms Hotel.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Can you come over right away? Why? Yes? Yes, So
- 8:08Speaker 2: you calling for mister Malcolm. No. I don't know anything
- 8:10Speaker 2: about mister Malcolm. But there's been a robbery here on
- 8:12Speaker 2: the fifteenth floor, the fifteen flour Yes, isn't that the
- 8:15Speaker 2: one occupied by the Maharaja of Janniper. Yes, that's why walk.
- 8:18Speaker 7: The hotel have its own investigator on the case.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The maharajas so much in the public eye. The publicity
- 8:23Speaker 2: would be ruined us if we don't get it back.
- 8:25Speaker 2: At what back, mister Pringle, what's been stolen? That diamond
- 8:28Speaker 2: of his the Star of Evil.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Fifteen Jery, how came, Misterprangle?
- 8:44Speaker 2: I need to find out the diamond was gone, mister Prangle.
- 8:47Speaker 7: Mister Lawson told me about it at seven point thirty.
- 8:49Speaker 7: I said, I'd try to get you to handle it,
- 8:51Speaker 7: mister Carter, and that we could keep the whole thing quiet,
- 8:53Speaker 7: no publicity last, and agreater that no.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Well, he was most completely uncooperative.
- 8:58Speaker 7: As a result, the place has been simply crowded, police
- 9:00Speaker 7: officers and with reporters from every paper in town.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Thank him. They're gone. Now, Hey on, mister Tringle, that thing.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Right across the hall in, mister Carta, that open door.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Hi kid sund story, I'm sure his speed.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I want to get your headlines all over the country.
- 9:16Speaker 2: How did it happen?
- 9:17Speaker 5: Gang of mastermind? That's all it could have been.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And you discovered the rubber? Did? Sure? Went down a
- 9:22Speaker 2: lobby for some cigars. Couldn't have been going over fifteen
- 9:24Speaker 2: or twenty minutes, right, Jerry?
- 9:25Speaker 6: All about ten, I'd say, mister Lawson. And one night
- 9:28Speaker 6: brought him back up.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Mister Carta.
- 9:29Speaker 6: He knew what had happened before he even got out
- 9:31Speaker 6: of the elevator.
- 9:32Speaker 2: You knew the damond aginstolens Speed, I sure did. How
- 9:36Speaker 2: could you tell that? Well, the door was opened to
- 9:38Speaker 2: this room and I could see his nibs turban lying
- 9:40Speaker 2: on the floor with the star of Evil ripped right
- 9:42Speaker 2: out of it like at us.
- 9:43Speaker 3: Now, where was the monoraza?
- 9:44Speaker 2: I don't know he was in the room when I left,
- 9:46Speaker 2: but I guess he went out.
- 9:47Speaker 3: But he wouldn't go anywhere without his turban, would he.
- 9:49Speaker 6: Well, maybe he's prowling around incognito, like like some old
- 9:53Speaker 6: guy in the Arabian nights Bluff Speed nobody walks away
- 9:56Speaker 6: and leaves a quarter million dollar diamond lying around without
- 9:59Speaker 6: even closing the door.
- 10:00Speaker 2: You don't know his nibs to him? A millionaires peanut?
- 10:03Speaker 6: Peanut?
- 10:04Speaker 2: Hey, what's in this case here? Huh? This big Morocco
- 10:08Speaker 2: leather case lying open here on the table. Oh yeah,
- 10:11Speaker 2: that was stolen too. I guess Mohammad's vengeance he called
- 10:14Speaker 2: it is a sword A sword, yeah, a big heavy
- 10:16Speaker 2: thing with a cavalry saber. It's got a solid.
- 10:18Speaker 5: Gold handle crusted with ruby's membo.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Nick, do you notice that little rug over there? Pet
- 10:24Speaker 3: OEt that door? His whole room is decorated in blue.
- 10:27Speaker 3: So what's a green rug doing in the here?
- 10:29Speaker 7: But somebody must have moved he was born that rug
- 10:32Speaker 7: blows in the bedroom.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Good. Great, here we've got the biggest jewel robbery of
- 10:35Speaker 2: the century, and you too have to worry about the
- 10:37Speaker 2: interior decorations. You're right, Patty, there's no reason for a
- 10:42Speaker 2: rug that at all. And unlet's and then let's have
- 10:46Speaker 2: this place there to cover something. So now we're going
- 10:49Speaker 2: to look under the rugs.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Huh, what do you expect to find somebody hiding the
- 10:54Speaker 5: suffering wildcat's meat?
- 10:56Speaker 2: Peck? It's blood on the floor, isn't it blood? See?
- 11:01Speaker 6: Yes?
- 11:02Speaker 2: And on the sill of this door too, Rugbert place
- 11:04Speaker 2: you're heighted.
- 11:05Speaker 3: It looks as though part of the blood stain is
- 11:07Speaker 3: on the other side of the door.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Flock. I just don't lead to mister Pengle, right, it's.
- 11:13Speaker 7: Just a closet a key, no, but but the housekeeper
- 11:16Speaker 7: has one. I'll get mister all right, Jerry, then hurry,
- 11:19Speaker 7: Oh you're beat Nick.
- 11:21Speaker 3: Are you thinking the same thing?
- 11:23Speaker 2: I am afraid, I am, Betsy. I'm afraid that when
- 11:26Speaker 2: we open that door, we'll find out why the Maharaja
- 11:28Speaker 2: is no longer interested in the Star of Evil. And
- 11:38Speaker 2: here's the key to that closet.
- 11:39Speaker 6: Mister Pringle, the one the woman room was gone, so
- 11:41Speaker 6: I need to go down to the dance and thanks.
- 11:43Speaker 7: Hey here, mister Kata, thanks dead body.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Hey, that's make that canty the Moharaja. Look at his hands,
- 11:55Speaker 3: they're as white as mine. And the Maharaja had a
- 11:57Speaker 3: dark complexion.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Turn them over so we can dear good grief. This
- 12:03Speaker 2: man I guess at the hotel, and not to bring
- 12:04Speaker 2: up no, no, I never saw him before. And who
- 12:07Speaker 2: it is? Nick? Who? He's a movie actor named Romney Lewis.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Romney Lewis, who's supposed to be in Hollywood, is found
- 12:23Speaker 2: dead in the New York hotel rooms of the mysterious Maharajah.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Johnny Poor and Linda Malcolm, in love with Lewis, has disappeared.
- 12:31Speaker 2: We'll see what happens in just a moment. Now back
- 12:40Speaker 2: to the case of the Star of Evil. Today's adventure
- 12:42Speaker 2: with Nick Carter brought to you by new post war
- 12:45Speaker 2: old Dutch cleanser. It's been almost an hour since Nick
- 12:48Speaker 2: found the body of Romney Lewis locked in the closet
- 12:50Speaker 2: of the Maharajah Johnny Poor's hotel suite. Sergeant Mathieson of
- 12:54Speaker 2: the homicide squad has arrived to take open and you
- 12:57Speaker 2: say that when you open the closet, Nick, the sword
- 13:00Speaker 2: was in there as well as the body. That's right, Matti. Well,
- 13:03Speaker 2: I guess there's no doubt that it's the murder weapon.
- 13:06Speaker 2: Golly yeah, somebody must have used it like an axe.
- 13:09Speaker 2: You keep out of this jury all.
- 13:11Speaker 7: You better go back to your elevator, and really I
- 13:13Speaker 7: should be down at the desk.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So you gently excuse this. I think you better sting
- 13:16Speaker 2: around mister Pingle. Do you meet to mister k Yes,
- 13:18Speaker 2: you do.
- 13:19Speaker 6: A swell now, I'll tell one of the other guys
- 13:21Speaker 6: to take over my comments. Very well, Jerry, but come
- 13:24Speaker 6: right back, yes, sir, okay, speed, this isn't the publicity
- 13:28Speaker 6: story any longer.
- 13:29Speaker 2: It's murdered. Open up and tell us the truth about
- 13:31Speaker 2: the Maharaja. Nick. You've got to believe me. I didn't
- 13:33Speaker 2: tell anything like this. Well, then where is his highness?
- 13:36Speaker 2: And why was this Romney Lewis in this room when
- 13:39Speaker 2: they should have been three thousand miles away in Hollywood?
- 13:42Speaker 2: Did he know the Maharaja know him?
- 13:45Speaker 5: He was the Maharaja. It was all publicity.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Gag. Lewis was the star of a movie called The
- 13:50Speaker 2: Star of Evil. It's going to open here in a
- 13:52Speaker 2: couple of weeks. Oh fine, it plays in East Indian
- 13:54Speaker 2: Prince and it's all We thought we'd get a lot
- 13:56Speaker 2: of publicity out of a fake robbery. Robbery You mean
- 13:59Speaker 2: the diamond hasn't read it? It stolen? I don't know, Nick.
- 14:02Speaker 2: We planned for tomorrow. But when I came up here
- 14:04Speaker 2: and saw the turbine on the floor with a diamond, gone, well,
- 14:07Speaker 2: I thought somebody jumped the gun. So I went into
- 14:08Speaker 2: my act speed. How much was that diamond or Rayli worth? Oh?
- 14:13Speaker 2: Couple one hundred? Maybe see any.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Taking over the elevator for me, mister Pringle, Now what
- 14:17Speaker 6: can I do for you?
- 14:18Speaker 2: Saje? You can kick quiet till I call on you. Now,
- 14:22Speaker 2: look speed. When you went downstairs at seven point fifteen,
- 14:25Speaker 2: was Lewis alone here in this suite on this floor? Yeah,
- 14:28Speaker 2: he was in his bedroom changing clothes for dinner. Not
- 14:31Speaker 2: only changed, he took off the Indian makeup. And where
- 14:33Speaker 2: were all those Indian servants? Wow, their rooms are on
- 14:36Speaker 2: the floor below this. They're really Hollywood extra is not servants,
- 14:39Speaker 2: so they never come up here unless the reporters are
- 14:40Speaker 2: in the place we were.
- 14:41Speaker 6: One of them could have made a sneak up the stairs.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Tony, it looks Sully boy.
- 14:45Speaker 7: Would you mind letting me ask the question that effect Sage.
- 14:49Speaker 7: Nothing like that could have happened. The stairway doors are locked,
- 14:51Speaker 7: mister Lawsonton struck.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Yeah, but I was very okay, okay, And anyone who
- 14:56Speaker 2: came to this floor while Speed was downstairs must have
- 14:59Speaker 2: used the.
- 14:59Speaker 7: Elevat None of the cars stop at this floor except Jerry's.
- 15:02Speaker 7: You didn't bring anyone up here, did you, Jerry?
- 15:04Speaker 2: Well, there wasn't anybody came up in the elevator.
- 15:07Speaker 3: But if I found that letter he was getting in
- 15:09Speaker 3: the Lewis the tandkerchief in his.
- 15:10Speaker 2: Dress and ruin, Well there's that pass a letter to
- 15:13Speaker 2: Romney Lewis from Lynda Malcolm. I have an idea they
- 15:16Speaker 2: were planning to look they were.
- 15:17Speaker 4: The letter say should be waiting for him at the
- 15:19Speaker 4: Addenda Hotel in Chicago. He was to take a plane
- 15:22Speaker 4: and join a dance so they could be married tomorrow.
- 15:24Speaker 2: So Lewis was running off with the boss's daughter quick.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Jumping horn tools they up, but Malcolm was wild.
- 15:30Speaker 2: Ye you're right about that. Ah.
- 15:31Speaker 7: So that's why mister Malcolm made that disgraceful scene in
- 15:34Speaker 7: the lobby.
- 15:34Speaker 2: What's that? What do you mean, mister Brewwa?
- 15:36Speaker 7: As I was going on duty at the desk about
- 15:38Speaker 7: seven o'clock, there was a commotion over by the elevators
- 15:41Speaker 7: and I looked up just in times see mister Malcolm
- 15:43Speaker 7: grab them Aharaj mister Lewis that is by the coke
- 15:46Speaker 7: as if you were actually going.
- 15:47Speaker 2: To strike him. Did you hear what they said? No?
- 15:50Speaker 2: But he was terribly angry. Anyone could see that. Yeah,
- 15:52Speaker 2: I heard his side. He said, if you don't keep
- 15:54Speaker 2: away from my daughter, I'll kill you. Well, I guess
- 15:57Speaker 2: that solves this case, or ran I'll be so sure. Well,
- 16:00Speaker 2: how do you think Malcolm got here? Jerry says, nobody
- 16:03Speaker 2: came to this door by elevator and the stairway door
- 16:05Speaker 2: was locked.
- 16:06Speaker 6: That's what I've been trying to tell you, mister Malcolm
- 16:09Speaker 6: standing on the floor above this and that stairway door
- 16:12Speaker 6: ain't locked.
- 16:12Speaker 2: It isn't. No. I noticed that when I was out
- 16:15Speaker 2: in the hall a minute ago. Come on, Nick, we're
- 16:17Speaker 2: going to call on mister Malcolm in a hurry. All right,
- 16:27Speaker 2: Suppose I did say I'd kill Louis if he didn't
- 16:29Speaker 2: stay away for my daughter. Naturally I didn't meet it liperally. Yeah,
- 16:32Speaker 2: but fifteen minutes after you said it, he was dead. Now,
- 16:35Speaker 2: how do you explain that? I don't have to explain it.
- 16:38Speaker 2: He promised not to see her again, so I didn't
- 16:40Speaker 2: have any reason to matter him. Huh. How do we
- 16:42Speaker 2: know Lewis promise? Did anyone hear him? No? But I
- 16:45Speaker 2: can prove that he did. He told me well into
- 16:47Speaker 2: this at the Alexander Hotel in Chicago. I took through
- 16:49Speaker 2: a long distance call to her. I'm waiting for it
- 16:51Speaker 2: to come through now. Lewis undoubted they made to that promise,
- 16:53Speaker 2: mister Malcolm, but I'm afraid he didn't intend to keep it.
- 16:56Speaker 2: What do you mean? Take a look at this? What
- 16:58Speaker 2: is his name? Copy of a telegram Lewis down to
- 17:00Speaker 2: the desk at seven point fifteen. Hey, let me see
- 17:02Speaker 2: that thend the Malcolm Alexander Hotel, Chicago, disregard any messages
- 17:08Speaker 2: from your father guard plane to Saint Louis. Meet you
- 17:12Speaker 2: there tomorrow and go through with playing their schedule from
- 17:15Speaker 2: the boy, that dirty double cross. Oh that's why he
- 17:19Speaker 2: got out of that Maharaja. Get up. He was hopping
- 17:22Speaker 2: the plane for Saint Louis. Eh. And when you found
- 17:24Speaker 2: out about it, Malcolm, you knocked him off, just like
- 17:27Speaker 2: you said you will. That's a lie. I didn't even
- 17:28Speaker 2: know he was dead until you told me, Maddy. I
- 17:31Speaker 2: want to ask a couple of questions. Go ahead, Nick,
- 17:33Speaker 2: I want to look around this room anyway. What do
- 17:38Speaker 2: you expect to find another body hidden in the closet?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Never mind the wise clutch. Mister Malcolm Lewis was murdered
- 17:44Speaker 2: between seven fifteen and seven thirty, only a few minutes
- 17:47Speaker 2: after you threatened him in the lobby. Where were you
- 17:50Speaker 2: at that time? Well, I came up here to my
- 17:52Speaker 2: room for a while. Yeah, and when I went out
- 17:55Speaker 2: for a walk afterwards, I came back and put through
- 17:59Speaker 2: that long distance. Can you prove that if you mean?
- 18:02Speaker 2: Did anyone see me? No? And I'm afraid you haven't
- 18:04Speaker 2: much of an alibi. What is it, Maddie, Nick, whoever
- 18:08Speaker 2: killed Lewis had to have a master key to unlock
- 18:11Speaker 2: that closet where he hid the body, didn't he sure?
- 18:13Speaker 2: But we know he's throw that from the linen room. Right,
- 18:15Speaker 2: mister Malcolm, are you sure you didn't go down there
- 18:18Speaker 2: and slide that key when you came upstairs after threatening
- 18:21Speaker 2: Lewis in the lobby, Because I'm sure, and you didn't
- 18:24Speaker 2: use that same key to unlock the stairway door so
- 18:27Speaker 2: you could walk down one flight, knock off Lewis and
- 18:30Speaker 2: then get back to your own floor. I most certainly
- 18:33Speaker 2: did not. All right, then, why did you hide the
- 18:35Speaker 2: key under the scarf on your dresser? Uh? You found
- 18:38Speaker 2: the key? Many? Sure I did? How could I miss
- 18:40Speaker 2: it in the spot like that? I don't know anything
- 18:42Speaker 2: about it. I never saw that key before. Huh. Well,
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're going to see it again, mister Malcolm, and plenty
- 18:47Speaker 2: you're going to see it in court because this key
- 18:50Speaker 2: is the evidence that's going to convict you of murder. Hey,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and Nick, why did Patsy stay up and Malcolm's sweet
- 19:06Speaker 2: after he was taken to headquarters? Huh oh? He asked
- 19:09Speaker 2: you to stay and take that long distance call from
- 19:11Speaker 2: his daughter would have come through MADDI, ok oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 19:14Speaker 2: I guess so. Oh you want me to ring for
- 19:16Speaker 2: the olevator? Yeah? I want to find Franklin has him
- 19:18Speaker 2: a few more questions. What for this case is wound up? Thinks? So?
- 19:22Speaker 2: My sure Malcolm's guilty. Every bit of evidence points to me.
- 19:25Speaker 2: That's the trouble, Matty. Why would a smart guy like
- 19:28Speaker 2: Malcolm leave so many clues? Well? And why would he
- 19:30Speaker 2: murder a man right after threatening him in front of
- 19:32Speaker 2: witness it because he was too mad to think about
- 19:34Speaker 2: being smart? Why when he found out that Lewis was
- 19:37Speaker 2: double coursing him, Nick, I bet he blew his top. No,
- 19:39Speaker 2: I don't think so well. And if I find what
- 19:42Speaker 2: I'm looking for, Maddie, I'm afraid you're going to look
- 19:44Speaker 2: pretty silly. What are you talking about? I'm talking about
- 19:47Speaker 2: one piece of evidence. The killer would have to get
- 19:49Speaker 2: rid of something that would convict him beyond the shadow
- 19:53Speaker 2: of a doubt. Oh oh, you mean the diamond hires
- 19:56Speaker 2: the collar side.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Hey, that was a great piece of work. You did
- 19:59Speaker 6: catch him, that n welcome guy so quick?
- 20:01Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks, Sonny. Oh, Jerry, I'm looking for mister pringle
- 20:04Speaker 2: Is in the lobby. Yeah, I'll take you down there. Thanks. Hey, Nick,
- 20:08Speaker 2: I don't know how you can think malcolmist in after
- 20:12Speaker 2: finding that key in his room, I'll tell you later, Madie. Okay,
- 20:15Speaker 2: but if we find that diamond on in two, you're
- 20:18Speaker 2: the one that's going to look silly.
- 20:29Speaker 5: Mister Pless you want to look in the incinerator?
- 20:32Speaker 2: This is it? Thanks Sam? Have there been a fire
- 20:35Speaker 2: in here in the last few hours? No, no, sir,
- 20:38Speaker 2: mister Carter. I was just to get ready to start
- 20:40Speaker 2: to one. Now, look, Nick, why do you think anybody
- 20:43Speaker 2: would want to hide a diamond in the incinerator. I'm
- 20:45Speaker 2: not worried about the diamond, Matty. Well, then what if
- 20:48Speaker 2: I give you five dollars when you're crawling that incinerator
- 20:51Speaker 2: and try to find something for me? Yeah? Sure? What
- 20:53Speaker 2: do you want me to look for? Suit of clow? Sam?
- 20:56Speaker 2: A bloodstained suit of clothes? Blood? I don't know about that.
- 21:01Speaker 2: I'll make it ten dollars. Well, okay for them that
- 21:04Speaker 2: I don't mind blood. Wait till I open the door. Yeah,
- 21:10Speaker 2: I'll help you get in, all right, you go, Hey, Nick,
- 21:15Speaker 2: what's all this about a bloodstained suit and clothes? If
- 21:17Speaker 2: you recall, Maddy, the murderer didn't stab with that sword
- 21:20Speaker 2: he chucked. Yeah, yeah, I know. I saw the body
- 21:22Speaker 2: and I need drag Lewis inside that clott which means
- 21:25Speaker 2: he's bound. I got blood on his clothes. Yeah, I
- 21:27Speaker 2: guess he would have done, and he'd also want to
- 21:29Speaker 2: get rid of that suit. But fast, and the easiest
- 21:32Speaker 2: way to get rid of his suit, but fast to
- 21:33Speaker 2: be the throat in the incinerator. Sure, and with the
- 21:35Speaker 2: incinerator chef opening on every floor, he could throw it
- 21:39Speaker 2: down here from any place? Does the way you want
- 21:41Speaker 2: to mister Carter? Is it a bund or clothes? Sam Well,
- 21:43Speaker 2: I found the bundle of something I handed out the
- 21:46Speaker 2: door to you. Huh okay, and now here you are
- 21:50Speaker 2: many this is it? Look for the love of Pete,
- 21:52Speaker 2: but that was blown to us. Not waste time talking.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I'll have to grab him before he gets away.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Hello, hello, operator, This is miss Bowen and mister Malcolm's
- 22:07Speaker 4: sweet No word on that call to Chicago yet, I
- 22:10Speaker 4: see well, thank you. Yes, yes, I'll wait here until
- 22:15Speaker 4: it comes through.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Oh, I don't think anybody was weird.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Hello Jerry, Yeah, I'm going to take a phone call
- 22:26Speaker 4: from mister Malcolm.
- 22:26Speaker 6: Oh hey, I heard mister Cotter say they'd have to
- 22:30Speaker 6: find that diamond before they really have the good John Malcolm,
- 22:33Speaker 6: I got.
- 22:33Speaker 2: A swell idea.
- 22:34Speaker 3: You decided you'd come up here and find it for them?
- 22:37Speaker 6: Is that is sure?
- 22:38Speaker 2: And you can help me? We'll turn this place out.
- 22:41Speaker 3: No, Jerry, the police will search the place. We don't
- 22:44Speaker 3: have any right to look.
- 22:45Speaker 2: If we find that diamond, will get credit for cracking
- 22:47Speaker 2: the case.
- 22:48Speaker 3: No, Jerry, absolutely not.
- 22:51Speaker 6: Well, Okay, it's hot in here, isn't it.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I think I'll open a window.
- 23:00Speaker 6: Is hot? Think y'all got a drink of water before
- 23:02Speaker 6: I go back to the elevator.
- 23:06Speaker 3: Hm, there's a beautiful view from this window. I didn't
- 23:10Speaker 3: realize we were so high up.
- 23:12Speaker 5: Hey, heymous fallen?
- 23:13Speaker 2: What what did the Jerry? The diamond? I didn't even
- 23:16Speaker 2: have to look for it.
- 23:16Speaker 3: It was right here in this glass, hot glass, I'm
- 23:19Speaker 3: impressing here.
- 23:20Speaker 2: It was hot, full of water. When I started to
- 23:21Speaker 2: empty it so as I could get myself a drink,
- 23:23Speaker 2: there was a diamond.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Thought that's impossible.
- 23:26Speaker 6: Don't remember what mister Carter said the sacknoon about a
- 23:29Speaker 6: diamond being invisible in water.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Well, mister Malcolm must have known about that too.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Are you trying to tell me mister Malcolm had the
- 23:35Speaker 4: diamond in that glass of water?
- 23:36Speaker 2: Sure?
- 23:37Speaker 6: The best place to hide in the finished right out
- 23:39Speaker 6: in the open, because nobody ever used to look there.
- 23:41Speaker 3: Jerry, I had a drink of water from that glass.
- 23:44Speaker 3: Now was five minutes ago. Huh And the diamond wasn't
- 23:47Speaker 3: there then?
- 23:48Speaker 2: Okay, there must have been.
- 23:50Speaker 3: No, you just put it there.
- 23:52Speaker 4: No, that's why you can't ship this room to hide
- 23:54Speaker 4: that diamonds some place where you thought the police.
- 23:56Speaker 5: Would find it.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Did you hit that key? Here a plan suspicion of
- 23:59Speaker 3: mister Malcolm. Oh, I didn't you stole that diamond?
- 24:01Speaker 2: Jerry?
- 24:02Speaker 6: You killed Lewis ah If I did, you're you're gonna
- 24:06Speaker 6: run until the cops.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Jerry, can you keep away from me?
- 24:10Speaker 2: Like the view from that window.
- 24:12Speaker 3: Down many closer, sixteen stories.
- 24:15Speaker 2: Down this porn and you're gonna make that trip. Patsy
- 24:27Speaker 2: clings desperately to the window frame, but her strength is
- 24:30Speaker 2: no match for Jerry's, and slowly he forces her backward
- 24:32Speaker 2: through the open window. We'll see what happens in just
- 24:35Speaker 2: a moment now for the conclusion of the case of
- 24:44Speaker 2: the Star of Evil. Today's adventure with Nick Carter brought
- 24:47Speaker 2: to you by a new post war old Dutch cleanser
- 24:50Speaker 2: in a suite at the Brentwood Arms Hotel. Patsy stands
- 24:53Speaker 2: by an open window facing a killer who says, sixteen
- 24:56Speaker 2: stories down this born, you're gonna make that trip. I
- 25:03Speaker 2: don't care.
- 25:04Speaker 7: I missed that time on purpose, but I won't miss again.
- 25:07Speaker 6: But you need Missicata.
- 25:10Speaker 3: I was just trying to kill me, pushing me out
- 25:13Speaker 3: the window. Eight children, Homney.
- 25:16Speaker 5: Lewis, come on you little from now.
- 25:19Speaker 2: All the only windows you'll be looking out of we're
- 25:22Speaker 2: gonna have bars on them. And so Patsy. When we
- 25:34Speaker 2: found that bloodstained uniform the incinerator, Nick and I started
- 25:37Speaker 2: to look for the elevator boy, and the indicator showed
- 25:39Speaker 2: that his elevator was stopped at the sixteenth floor. That's
- 25:41Speaker 2: why we figured he'd gone up to Malcolm Suite.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Oh, thank goodness you.
- 25:46Speaker 2: We got a complete confession from him at headquarters. Good.
- 25:49Speaker 2: It seems that when he came back up in the
- 25:51Speaker 2: elevator after taking speed Larsen downstairs, the door across the
- 25:54Speaker 2: hall was open, and there was the turbane with the
- 25:57Speaker 2: diamond and nobody in the room.
- 26:00Speaker 3: And I suppose Lewis came in and caught him stealing it.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Hunting Yeah, and Jerry got panicky and grabbed the sword
- 26:05Speaker 2: off the table and slashed at him. When he realized
- 26:08Speaker 2: Louis was dead, he remembered the quarrel and the lobbrary
- 26:11Speaker 2: and got the idea of framing Malcolm for the murder.
- 26:13Speaker 2: That's why he stole the master key from the linen room. Yes,
- 26:17Speaker 2: he locked Lewis's body in the closet, unlocked the stairway door,
- 26:20Speaker 2: an tan of the key in Malcolm's sweet Yeah, but
- 26:23Speaker 2: what about the blood stained uniform? That was his next move? Hum.
- 26:26Speaker 2: He got to the bell boy's locker room without being seen,
- 26:29Speaker 2: changed into another uniform and threw the one he'd been
- 26:31Speaker 2: wearing down the incinerator shaft, thinking it'd be burned up
- 26:34Speaker 2: before anyone palmed. And tell me, Nick, when did you
- 26:36Speaker 2: begin to suspect Jerry? Almost from the beginning. May How,
- 26:39Speaker 2: neither Speed nor any of the Hollywood expers acting as
- 26:41Speaker 2: the Maharaja servant would have any motor for stealing the diamond.
- 26:44Speaker 2: They all knew it was a face, and.
- 26:45Speaker 3: Ringer was on duty at the desk when Lewis was killed.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Right, so there wasn't anyone left but Jerry, That is,
- 26:50Speaker 2: after I eliminated Malcolm Yeah, you eliminated everybody but Jerry
- 26:55Speaker 2: after his trial, Nick, I gotta hunch the state is
- 26:58Speaker 2: going to eliminate Nick. Carter. Master Detective is presented each

- 28:59Speaker 8: And now let's get back into the show.
- 29:06Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, a very interesting episode. There were a
- 29:11Speaker 1: couple of things I really liked about this. First, Patsy
- 29:14Speaker 1: getting to confront the murderer was a nice touch. And
- 29:19Speaker 1: the second thing is the way that our expectations were subverted.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Usually radio programs when it comes to murders, particularly the
- 29:34Speaker 1: male murderers, there is a top of voice that you
- 29:41Speaker 1: would expect, and this Jerry's was not the type of
- 29:46Speaker 1: voice you would typically expect with the murderers. So that
- 29:50Speaker 1: was a very nice subversion of expectation. But any rate,
- 29:56Speaker 1: a very solid episode. We do have a listener comment
- 30:00Speaker 1: to get into this one from Facebook. Shirley says love
- 30:04Speaker 1: to listen to these. Well, thanks so much, Shirley, and
