- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another Amharic adventure? Luna: Totally! I've been practicing from last time, the heart and stomach stuff. ልቤ and ሆዴ, right? Lucas: Nice! You're doing great. Today, let's talk about something a bit more dramatic. The weather can get pretty wild, right? Luna: Oh, like a big storm? I love a good thunderstorm. As long as I'm inside with a blanket. Lucas: Exactly. So let's learn thunder and lightning in Amharic. The word for thunder is ነጎድጓድ. Say it with me: ነጎድጓድ. Luna: ነጎድጓድ. That's a mouthful. ነጎድጓድ. Lucas: You got it. And lightning is መብረቅ. መብረቅ. Luna: መብረቅ. It sounds like a crackle, kind of. መብረቅ. Lucas: I love that. So when you hear that rumble, you can say ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. I hear thunder. ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Luna: ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. So እሰማለሁ means I hear. Good to remember. Lucas: Yes. And if you see a flash, you can say መብረቁን ተመልከት. Look at the lightning. መብረቁን ተመልከት. Luna: መብረቁን ተመልከት. That's a bit longer. Let me try. መብረቁን ተመልከት. Lucas: Perfect. So we have four things today: thunder, lightning, I hear thunder, and look at the lightning. Let's do a quick scene. Imagine we're at a window, watching a storm. Luna: Okay, I'm ready. I hear something. ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Lucas: And look outside. መብረቁን ተመልከት. Luna: Oh that's cool. So the lightning comes first, then the thunder, right? Lucas: Right, because light is faster than sound. So if you see a flash, you might say መብረቁን ተመልከት, and then later you hear the rumble and say ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Luna: That makes sense. So I'm watching a storm from a cozy café in Addis. The sky gets dark, there's a flash. መብረቁን ተመልከት. Then a few seconds later, the boom. ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Lucas: Exactly. You're a natural. And it's not just for storms. You can use these words when talking about scary weather in general. Luna: So if someone asks me about the weather, I can say, 'There was thunder and lightning last night.' How would I say that? Lucas: Let's keep it simple. You can just say ነጎድጓድ እና መብረቅ ነበር. That's 'There was thunder and lightning.' Luna: ነጎድጓድ እና መብረቅ ነበር. That's a bit longer, but I think I can do it. ነጎድጓድ እና መብረቅ ነበር. Lucas: You just added 'and' – እና – and 'was' – ነበር. Great job. So now you can describe a whole storm. Luna: This is awesome. I feel like I could actually tell someone about a storm in Amharic now. Lucas: You absolutely could. And hey, if you're enjoying learning with us, there's a simple way to support the show so we can keep making episodes. You can buy us a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It really helps us keep the podcast ad-free and going strong. Luna: Yeah, we love making these episodes, and every bit of support means a lot. We're so grateful to everyone who listens. Lucas: So back to the storm. Let's do a quick recap. Thunder is ነጎድጓድ, lightning is መብረቅ. I hear thunder – ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Look at the lightning – መብረቁን ተመልከት. Luna: And there was thunder and lightning – ነጎድጓድ እና መብረቅ ነበር. Let me say that again. ነጎድጓድ እና መብረቅ ነበር. Lucas: Perfect. Now, one more time, all together. When you see the sky light up, you say መብረቁን ተመልከት. Luna: መብረቁን ተመልከት. Lucas: And when you hear the boom, you say ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Luna: ነጎድጓድ እሰማለሁ. Lucas: You've got it. So next time a storm rolls in, you'll be ready to talk about it in Amharic. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: See you then. Bye!
