- 0:00Privacy should be fun. From my point of view, if you
- 0:05talk about privacy to lots of companies out there, it goes
- 0:10over their head. They roll their their eyes,
- 0:12they're not interested. But how can we make it
- 0:15interesting both for people coming into the industry so they
- 0:20can see this is a great career, this is fun.
- 0:24This, this, this is, you know, I can have passion for this, but
- 0:28how can we do that? So you may know, and you will
- 0:30have seen on LinkedIn that from things I've posted in LinkedIn
- 0:35over the years, I put it all together and produced a book.
- 0:40And here it is making data protection and information
- 0:45governance fun. And I want to make it fun.
- 0:51So when people are doing training, you know, if you're
- 0:55just going to do a PowerPoint presentation, it's going to be
- 0:58death by PowerPoint. And we said that 20 years ago.
- 1:03But what can we do to make it interesting?
- 1:07I don't know if about European I, I don't know if you are a, a,
- 1:10a pop star enthusiast, you listen to pop songs.
- 1:16I'm not particularly. But if I was to say, let's take
- 1:20the legal basis, GDPR legal basis, the six, can we think of
- 1:26a pop song that go with the first one consent?
- 1:31Can we think of a pop song that would go with contracts and then
- 1:36vital interest and so on? So do that take the principles,
- 1:41you know, lawful, fair and transparent?
- 1:43Can we think of a film that would would meet that sort of,
- 1:50you know, first principle? Can we think of, you know,
- 1:55accountability the the second principle?
- 1:58Can we think of a film that might, with a title that would,
- 2:02it's just making it fun so that, you know, an icebreaker at the
- 2:06beginning. Let's think of these 7
- 2:08principles. Let's think of what film we can
- 2:10tie to it. Wow.
- 2:18Definition of fun. When I do it for my clients,
- 2:20what I was doing was I would say no introduction to privacy, but
- 2:24I will take 20 questions in their day life and ask them how
- 2:29would they do it? Sometimes an open book, meaning
- 2:32you type or sometimes giving them options.
- 2:35And when they've chosen, it's typical that people will choose
- 2:381234 in not equal distribution, but in some distribution, and
- 2:43then give them feedback saying why is it right, why this one is
- 2:47right, why this one is wrong, and why this one is even more
- 2:50wrong. And this one can be right, but
- 2:52it's not as right as this one. And give them so far after every
- 2:56question and then make it gamification.
- 2:58So every question it gives them points.
- 3:02And then we say this person is leading.
- 3:05And then we say this is your privacy champion in this year
- 3:07department. He's the good guy.
- 3:09Go to him and ask questions. But now you have some
- 3:11information. So rather than explaining them 7
- 3:14principles or the legal basis or consent and everything, we say,
- 3:19OK, these are the 10 situations and in each situation, this is
- 3:22the question. This is the question or one or
- 3:24two. So that's what we've done.
- 3:26But the idea of making it fun in terms of a movie or a song,
- 3:30that's even more interesting. I'll see if I can find that.
- 3:34But I'm not a enthusiast or a very I don't have a backlog or
- 3:39memory of long list of movies in my head.
- 3:41So I'll need to rely on that GPT and perplexity.
- 3:44Products, yes, I was going to say you don't have to, you can
- 3:47go to that. And I put those on Linkedins
- 3:50over the years and, you know, other people are combined and
- 3:53said, oh, this, this film would be better.
- 3:56And I don't disagree with them, but there's not one that's
- 3:58better. But there are a number that you
- 4:00could link with each one. So yeah, it's a good.
- 4:03It's a good way, yeah. But congratulations for your
- 4:06book as well. And by the way, we had Tanya a
- 4:09few weeks ago in our podcast as well, thanks to your
- 4:11recommendation in the last year, but it took time for us to
- 4:16finalise and get a common slot. So that was fun.
- 4:19But when you talk about coaching or guiding people or bringing
- 4:22people into the mainstream privacy or the privacy career,
- 4:27there are two types of people usually aiming to come into
- 4:29privacy. One, who are youngsters who are
- 4:32looking for it. They'd want to see what do I do?
- 4:35And is privacy a career for me? And second, are they have done
- 4:38something maybe they'll run 10/15/20 years of experience and
- 4:41they're thinking of, I think privacy sounds interesting.
- 4:44So that's more the calling problem.
- 4:47And then we say I want to go there.
- 4:49So what would you advise to both Gentry or both kinds of people
- 4:53and say, how do you start? Where do you start?
- 4:57How do you go about it? So I, I think so the, the young
- 5:00man, say young man, he's younger than me.
- 5:02The man who came to see me today, he comes from a medical
- 5:06background. He wants to transition from
- 5:09that. He, he has a big interest in
- 5:11privacy. So he wants to think it.
- 5:13So he's already got an interest and he's already looking at and
- 5:16he's, he's doing, he's doing Tanya's course, beat the BCS
- 5:21course. But you know, he's, he's trying
- 5:25to pick up, he's following the good people on LinkedIn and he's
- 5:29linked with other people even outside of LinkedIn by
- 5:32recommendation. So that's one way of doing it.
- 5:36He's still working. He got his job, but he's looking
- 5:39that over time he might transition into privacy.
- 5:43So that's that's one way. But you do have other people
- 5:46who, you know, say, well, I don't know what to do.
- 5:49Some people think cybersecurity is a big issue.
- 5:54So they think, oh, cybersecurity, but they find
- 5:57they're not as technical as they should be or ought to be or
- 6:00might need to be to go into to cybersecurity.
- 6:03So they say. But I have an interest and what
- 6:06we do and what you do and I do in privacy links to
- 6:11cybersecurity. You know, we can't ignore it.
- 6:14It is part of what we do, but we're not, I'm not, I don't know
- 6:18about you, but I'm not technical in that sense.
- 6:22I know a few things, but I'm not technical.
- 6:24So I would say, well, look, that's not for you.
- 6:27Maybe what we do, the privacy, you've got to have a bit of
- 6:30knowledge. But then there is the wider, you
- 6:33know, whether it's GDPR, the Data Protection Act, the Privacy
- 6:36Electronic Electronic Communications Act, or even, you
- 6:40know, legislation from other nations, whether in Europe or
- 6:44whether it's HIPPA in America, you know, whatever it might be.
