Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / My Awesome Time At Cleetus McFarland's Freedom 500 | Charlie Marlow Show
Transcript
- 0:00What's up everybody, Charlie Marlowe here jumping on to talk
- 0:03about my awesome experience last weekend at the Freedom 500 put
- 0:07on by the one and only Cletus McFarland at the Freedom Factory
- 0:13down there in Bradenton, FL. First of all, I love the vibe of
- 0:17that Bradenton Sarasota area. Hadn't ever really been down
- 0:21there. I covered a Rams football game
- 0:24in Tampa probably 10 years ago or so, maybe even longer than 10
- 0:30years ago. Didn't get much out of Tampa
- 0:32though, just pretty much hung out at the hotel.
- 0:35So I flew into Tampa for the Freedom 500I flew out of
- 0:39Bradenton. But that drive down from Tampa
- 0:43is really, really nice. Right there on the water.
- 0:46You have that amazing bridge right there, what after Saint
- 0:50Pete? So just first of all, a really
- 0:52cool area, Tampa, Saint Pete, Sarasota, Bradenton, I know it's
- 0:58a big area for for spring training and all that.
- 1:01What you have Sarasota Orioles, I believe, I believe, don't
- 1:06quote me on that. I believe that's the case.
- 1:08But you're here to talk about racing, to hear me talk about
- 1:11racing. So basically got in super early
- 1:15on Friday and I'm going there with Kenny Wallace and his buddy
- 1:19John Scotone. So I fly commercial, big timers,
- 1:23big timers. They're flying down on John
- 1:25Scotone's airplane, pick them up from the airport in Bradenton.
- 1:31And this is, I don't know, 3:00, whatever it was.
- 1:35And we go right to the track, right to the Freedom factory.
- 1:39We'd already missed the drivers meeting, but we're we're there
- 1:42in plenty of time. Right when we get there, right
- 1:45when we get there, Cletus grabs Kenny and they start doing that
- 1:50drifting, which was crazy. We put that video on Kenny
- 1:53Wallace's YouTube channel did really well.
- 1:55Just amazing them going around. You should see their their faces
- 2:00just lighting up as they're spinning and drifting and
- 2:03burnouts and all that. Really cool.
- 2:05Then they qualify. Kenny qualified second, but then
- 2:09they kind of flipped the field, whatever it was.
- 2:11I think he was 7th or 8th when the race actually started.
- 2:16And we'll, we'll talk about the race.
- 2:17But to me, what was so cool about this event, it was such a
- 2:22celebration of Motorsports, such a celebration not just of, of
- 2:28NASCAR and the history of NASCAR, but all forms of
- 2:32Motorsports. Just think about some of the
- 2:33people that were there. So I'm obviously there with
- 2:37Kenny Wallace. Kenny Wallace raced in NASCAR
- 2:40for 20 years. Whatever.
- 2:41He's 62 years old. You got Wyatt Miller, the
- 2:46grandson of Dale Earnhardt Senior, the son of Kelly
- 2:51Earnhardt Miller. Kelly Earnhardt Miller was there
- 2:55as well. You have Bobby Earnhardt racing
- 2:58in this event, another grandson of Dale Earnhardt Senior.
- 3:03That's Carrie Earnhardt's son. So think about just tying in the
- 3:08history of racing with some of the people I just discussed, the
- 3:13history of NASCAR. You got the Earnhardt family
- 3:16represented. You got the Wallace family
- 3:20represented. We're talking about two of the
- 3:21most famous Hall of Fame type families in the history of
- 3:25NASCAR. When we're talking about the
- 3:26Earnhardt's, the Wallace's. I mean, obviously you got the
- 3:29Petty's, you got the Allisons Labonnies.
- 3:32I'm sure I'm forgetting some of them.
- 3:34I said Allison's right, but just think about the history of
- 3:38NASCAR. So if you're 70 years old, you
- 3:43can enjoy watching that race because you're watching Kenny
- 3:45Wallace. Maybe you were in an Earnhardt
- 3:48fan, a Dale Senior fan. Maybe you're 75 years old,
- 3:51whatever it is, and you're watching now the grandkids of
- 3:54Dale Senior Racing in this race. Maybe you're a fan of Kenny
- 3:58Wallace, Mike Wallace, the Hall of Famer, Rusty Wallace.
- 4:02You have the Wallace family represented.
- 4:05And then also just think about that.
- 4:06Think about that length of time that that span of ages.
- 4:12So Kenny Wallace is 62, 62 years old, racing in the Crown
- 4:17Victoria race for the Freedom 500.
- 4:20Wyatt Miller, who's a super talented kid, really nice kid by
- 4:25the way, youngest person to ever race the Crown VIX with Cletus
- 4:29in the Freedom 500. This kid who's going to be a
- 4:32superstar talent already is, but you would think he's going to
- 4:36continue to be a talent in NASCAR moving forward.
- 4:39But he's 14 years old. You got a 14 year old kid
- 4:43racing, you got a 62 year old man with his AARP card and Kenny
- 4:49Wallace, who I love. I say that with love, but you
- 4:51basically have a 50 year difference almost in in people
- 4:55competing in this race. So it's just so cool to see the
- 4:58history of NASCAR represented with the families, with the next
- 5:03generation, with the third generation in terms of of Wyatt
- 5:07Miller and Bobby Earnhardt in this race.
- 5:09And then also not just NASCAR. Let's talk about Motorsports as
- 5:14a whole. You got Travis Pastrana in the
- 5:17race. You got Brian Deegan in the
- 5:19race. Brian Deegan ends up coming out
- 5:22of nowhere at the end to win the race.
- 5:24But so it's not just NASCAR. We're talking about all the
- 5:29different racing that Pastrana does or did, bikes and rally car
- 5:35and Deegan with the motorcycles and X Games.
- 5:39Brian Deegan I think is 50, early 50s, fifty 152.
- 5:43Don't quote me on that. I think Pastrana is about 42.
- 5:46But you're talking about a 25 plus year, probably rivalry
- 5:52going back to the X Games and all that and Moto with Pastrana
- 5:55and Brian Deegan and that rivalry.
- 5:58So you got NASCAR, you got Moto, you got X Games.
- 6:02I mean, think about that. We're talking about Wallace's
- 6:06Earnhardt, Pastrana Deegan, 40 years, 40 years of racing
- 6:12history across all these different forms of Motorsports
- 6:16represented at the Freedom 500. That was so cool.
- 6:19So again, I've never been to the track.
- 6:21It used to be called what DeSoto.
- 6:23I know Kenny raced there back in the day, but sold out.
- 6:28However many people were in there.
- 6:29I'm not sure I, I googled it and said the capacity was 5000.
- 6:32So let's say there was 6000, I don't know what the number was
- 6:36because you had VI PS and all that, but the grandstands were
- 6:38absolutely packed and, and you walk around, I walked around the
- 6:42track probably 3-4 times, get into the media area to post some
- 6:46content. The fans are so excited.
- 6:48It was just fun. Like everything about the event
- 6:52was fun. And you have the streaming
- 6:55aspect. I I'm sure 10's and 10s of
- 6:59thousands of people connecting on the stream, maybe 100,000
- 7:02plus. I don't, I don't know the
- 7:03numbers on that, but five 6000 people there in attendance.
- 7:09They stayed the whole time. And, and this was a show, right?
- 7:13It wasn't just a race, it was an event.
- 7:16And I'll tell you what, Cletus is so impressive because that
- 7:20dude does it all. And I've watched some of his
- 7:22videos and I've watched his interviews when he's racing
- 7:25NASCAR and all that, but I mean, literally a freaking one man
- 7:29show where he's out there racing.
- 7:31But every time he's not racing, he's on the mic and he's
- 7:35grabbing the microphone and you got the live aspect at the
- 7:39track, but it's also going out there on the stream and he's
- 7:42doing all the interviews like he's having fun.
- 7:46He's a bit of a comedian. I mean, during cautions, the
- 7:50dude is literally jumping out of his car during a caution to grab
- 7:53the mic to talk about what's going down to chirp other
- 7:57drivers, right, If they're crashing each other.
- 8:02It was just a, a really, really cool show.
- 8:04I mean, there's a, a, a point where they put the dude on the
- 8:07screen with his sleeves off and they ripped his sleeves off.
- 8:09They put that on on the broadcast, on the stream and
- 8:14just just a fun experience and there wasn't downtime.
- 8:17That's why I'm talking about it wasn't just a race.
- 8:19It was an event. You had Cletus starting out
- 8:21there with the with the drifting car.
- 8:24They had these these vehicles, these trucks basically that had
- 8:28no back end. I'll put a picture up here.
- 8:30No back end. But they were just like racing
- 8:33around the track and just dragging, dragging around the
- 8:37track. It was pretty cool to see.
- 8:39And then, man, I'm telling you, a firework show that rivals 4th
- 8:44of July. I mean, an insane firework show
- 8:48at the end that seemingly didn't end.
- 8:51And I was probably honestly what, 50 yards away watching it.
- 8:55I'll put some video of that as well.
- 8:58And then the pyro and I, I felt the pyro.
- 9:00I felt the pyro from 50 yards away.
- 9:01That's how crazy the pyro was. So just just such a fun event.
- 9:08You understand why the dude's so successful.
- 9:10You understand why he has 5 million or whatever it is
- 9:13YouTube subscribers and, and look, you call him a showman and
- 9:18all that, but also a businessman.
- 9:20I mean, you walk around the track dude, and, and what it
- 9:23takes to put on an event in a race like that.
- 9:27How many, how many employees were there?
- 9:29Hundreds, I'm guessing between all the tickets, the
- 9:32concessions, think about all the people that have to work on the
- 9:36track. I, I'm guessing 100 plus
- 9:38employees that are collecting paychecks from these events and
- 9:44just how many people the, the, the business impact to the
- 9:48community for people coming from all over the place, not just
- 9:52Florida. We were walking around with
- 9:53Kenny talking to people. There were folks I remember
- 9:57saying they came from Detroit, they came from Pittsburgh, PA
- 10:02just to see this race to come down to Florida, not for a
- 10:04NASCAR race for Cletus Mcfarland's Freedom 500.
- 10:08So just a really, really cool, impressive event.
- 10:13They had music playing in between.
- 10:14You can tell he likes $0.50. That's what I'm saying.
- 10:17No downtime and I I think the stream started with qualifying
- 10:21what maybe like 5530. They had to be out of there by
- 10:2510, but it was just non-stop and walking around.
- 10:29You know, I don't know all of Cletus's characters.
- 10:32I know I know about squirrel, right, But there was this older
- 10:35dude that I think is a guy that's featured in a lot of
- 10:38Cletus's videos and he was signing autographs right there
- 10:41on the on the midway. Just so many fans having fun,
- 10:45like just due to their sleeves off dudes with their girlfriends
- 10:49there. Just such a fun time at the
- 10:51Freedom 500. So I made some notes.
- 10:54I think I've touched all the bases here.
- 10:56Let me make sure. Sometimes my handwriting is so
- 10:58bad that I, I can't even, I can't even read my own
- 11:03handwriting. I think I touched on everything.
- 11:07Just a fun time, man. A fun, fun time at the Freedom
- 11:11Factory for the Freedom 500. And if Kenny Wallace goes back
- 11:14there, I'll be going back as well.
- 11:17We had so much awesome content. It's all there on the Kenny
- 11:19Wallace YouTube channel. You know, originally we were
- 11:21going to go to that Berlin race in Michigan.
- 11:23I was actually going to make a vacation out of it.
- 11:26So I like the vacation with my family in that South Haven, MI
- 11:29area. I'm actually from Toledo, OH,
- 11:31but I've lived in Michigan three different times.
- 11:34So I love Michigan even though I'm an Ohio State fan.
- 11:36But so whether it's the Freedom 500 next year, whether Kenny
- 11:39does one of these other races, whether it's Indianapolis,
- 11:42Berlin, I promise if Kenny's racing there next year, I'll be
- 11:46there as well. Because just such an awesome
- 11:49experience, such a celebration of racing and Motorsports and
- 11:52fun. And, and one more thing, I'm
- 11:55essentially a full time content creator.
- 11:57YouTube. I worked in TV and radio, local
- 11:59TV and radio for about 20 years. But I've been full time YouTube
- 12:02since I left radio, probably 2 1/2, three years.
- 12:06I left TV for good 4 1/2 years ago.
- 12:09That's another thing. You got to give Cletus all the
- 12:12respect in the world, man, for what he's built in terms of his
- 12:15just content industry. That's the other thing I was
- 12:19about to stop, but I forgot about this.
- 12:21Like everybody there is a content creator.
- 12:24If you walk around, you're on somebody else's stream or
- 12:27somebody else's YouTube channel. Everybody had their own content.
- 12:31You know, camera person, Pastrana Deegan, Wyatt Miller's
- 12:3414, he's got somebody following him.
- 12:36You got Kenny Wallace, you got all these other big Youtubers.
- 12:39And I say this with no disrespect, I don't know all the
- 12:41big names. So there was these other dudes
- 12:43that had hundreds of thousands of subscribers, millions of
- 12:46subscribers. And I don't even know him
- 12:48because I'm not really in that in that realm like that.
- 12:51But like for, for people that are in the content creation
- 12:55business. Like you got to give Cletus all
- 12:57the respect in the world for what he's built.
- 12:59It's pretty freaking amazing the views he gets and the, and the
- 13:02passion of the fans and the following and all that.
- 13:04And you see it on YouTube when we post stuff on Kenny Wallace's
- 13:07channel. I think we've added like 3000
- 13:09subscribers in the last 5-6 days and the Cletus fans seem to love
- 13:13Kenny and Kenny loves the Cletus and the Cletus fans.
- 13:15So it's it's really cool to see the the synergy there.
- 13:18All right, already went too long, but awesome experience.
- 13:21Freedom 500. If you got this far, please
- 13:25comment like and subscribe. We're trying to get this channel
- 13:28above 1000 get this baby monetized.
- 13:31So we have kind of a second channel where I can talk about
- 13:33NASCAR and racing also. All right, Charlie Marlowe
- 13:36signing off. Peace.
- 13:38Awesome time with Cletus McFarlane at the Freedom 500.
- 13:42See ya.
