- Podcast episode 33: Hey it's Dex, creator of Reboot Player One and host at the Checkpoint. And today's question is this When did I last change my mind about something important? When did I last change my mind about something important? I can think of one pretty specific time that I changed my mind. And this is to do with a a good friend of mine who I speak to almost every day about everything, about life, about kids, about work, about running your own business. And we were talking about. We were talking about our kids running their own business and what it could possibly be. Now, our kids are pretty young. I think this is what we were talking about. Anyway, and a A job popped up. A job. A business popped up. And my friend said that her daughter could potentially do it. And the business was to pick up dog poo in people's houses. The pi. The business was to pick up people's dog poo. Now I thought like it was the most ridiculous idea I'd ever heard. And I let her know about it. Like in a lot of words, a lot of very descriptive words. And short of calling her stupid, I I I I used every adjective under the sun to say like how like weird of an idea it was, how dumb of an idea. Like, why would anybody wanna wanna do that or want to pay a person to do that? I was I was like letting a habit from both guns, both barrels, and then picking up other guns and then doing it the same thing. It was it was almost like I was wanting to enforce my point so much so that it would actually change her mind. That's what I think in hindsight I was I was gunning for. Like I I don't know if you've ever felt this way before. Actually I think a lot of people have. You know, it I I could probably relate it to to sports where people are just so fanatical. about the club that they barrack for, whether it be football or soccer or baseball or whatever it is, and you're trying to tell another person why your favorite team is better than their team. That's kind of how I felt that I was talking to my friend about this particular idea she had. And and and so I'm not insulting her per se. I'm insulting the idea I'm saying nobody would do that. Nobody would do this. And I think at some point she just got kinda sick and tired of the whole conversation. And she kinda she kinda backed down and initially I felt I think I'd won in a way. And And I think what happened to me, I I'm just sort of going through the conversation in my head. And I think she she I wouldn't say she gave up, but she had said, let's let's not talk about this. And I almost felt like I didn't like she gave up too easily. And I I kept on trying to bring it up more and more, which I know I shouldn't have. Like I'm I'm a total idiot for this. Anyway, We had we had changed conversation and I think I still kept on kind of referring back to it like a like a total full am. And I think it was kind of the end of the day and we we just stopped chatting, you know. That's what I find weird. Like as a side, it's just so weird how you can just chat with people and then like not reply to one thing and then the next day just just chat normally. I I just find it so weird that You don't have to say goodbye. Most people don't. You just don't reply. Vice versa, right? Anyway. so we just stopped chatting because it was the end of the day. And her business idea, I thought I'd Google it and be like, you know, trying to prove her wrong. Now, mind you, my opinion of this business just is based off my own thoughts. No research. Nothing. I just thought it was the most absurd idea at the time and so I'll just let it have it. And and so when I Google the business idea, like in America, people are making like millions of dollars with this with this idea. And I was like, wow, okay, like I'm an idiot. Like I'm more of an idiot now. firstly I'm an idiot for me just trying to demean this idea and almost demean her in a way, saying that hey, like That's absurd. Like, why would anybody want to do that? Like, why are you even thinking about that idea? First stupid. Second stupid is that it's actually an idea that's worth doing. And if you get a really good clientele, like yeah, you could make a lot of money. So after like that realization, I was like, well what do I do with that? Like, do I try and bring up the same conversation yet somehow just say, you know what, that idea isn't bad after all, without actually being you know, without actually admitting that I had sort of been wrong. What I ended up doing though was I apologized in a conversation and I I was just entirely up front. I just said, hey, what we spoke about yesterday, I was wrong. I shouldn't have said the things that I said without any kind of real research. It was just look, it was my opinion. and I shouldn't have gone down that path in the way I should have and Like I'm I'm sorry. I researched it and I'm totally wrong. You're totally right. And one I I shouldn't have gone as hard as what I should have at you. And so I'm sorry. And that took a lot for me to say because I I don't know whether it's a guy thing or whether it's just a me thing or whether it's, you know, what I said before about this whole IT thing where you're giving them ideas, you're you're you're you're giving people recommendations and you're thinking to yourself that, hey, you should listen to me because I've been doing this for years. and I don't know whether that was sort of in my mind when I was having this like quasi argument with her about it. But Saying sorry was hard. For me. And she replied back. And I don't think she let me have it in a way that I thought she should have. She probably should have been lot harsher. but she accepted the apology and said thank you and all this sort of stuff. Anyway, it felt good. like we're still really good friends now. In fact, we're probably better friends as a result, you know, because I said sorry to her. I admitted I was wrong, and it's not something that I would like I could probably count my hands the amount of times that I've really gone to that place with a person and And said some things that I that I thought were just correct to only be proven wrong and to then come, you know, with my hat in my hand saying, I'm sorry, like I totally messed it up. but kind of after that one time, it's it's been a lot easier for me to admit when I'm wrong. And I've done it multiple times now. Not as many as what you'd think. it it's because I'm more measured in certain responses now, rather than me just saying, Hey, you're wrong and this is the reason why you're wrong. It's more, hm, okay, well this is what I think. You know, let's let's have a chat about it. So I I don't think that I would be needing to apologize as much now just because I'm a bit more aware of certain things that I say and that potentially other people say as well. I'm I'm You know, I'm not as quick to fly off the handle, so to speak, on certain topics. these days I don't even want to approach certain topics if I've no idea about them. I just don't bring them up. Or if they do get brought up, I just say brought in. Or this if they do get brought up, I I just say I I don't know enough about this to give you an honest opinion. I'm just happy to listen. So that was probably the last time that I changed my mind. Now, whether it was so it was Was it something important? It was for me. Like for me to get that worked up about a an opinion, I it was definitely something important for me. It it was probably my ego. It was probably me asserting a form of dominance of it. Like, hey, I know everything about business, and this business idea of yours is like crap. Well, it is it's dog crap. but you know what I mean? It's like crap. Like, what are you even thinking about that? And And I changed my mind. Changed my mind through research. And I had a fess up and I said, Hey, like I was totally wrong. I was off base. I'm so sorry. And I can't say that it won't happen again because I'm not really sure, but I will be a lot more measured when we get to talking about this sort of stuff. So yeah, that was the last time. I changed my mind about something important. Now, because I still haven't worked out what to say at the end of these things, if you like this, I don't know, thumbs up, I guess, maybe. share it with people that you think it might help, and maybe leave a comment. I guess, you know what, I think the next round of videos, I'll definitely have something in the can because I think this is very unprofessional, but it doesn't matter. I'm having fun talking. Okay, I'm Dex, Scribbit Play1 and the checkpoint, and I will see you on the next video. Bye.
