- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the almost famous podcast with iHeartRadio.
- 0:04Speaker 2: Hey, guys, it's almost famous.
- 0:06Speaker 1: OG's the podcast of goodness and it's one of your
- 0:09Speaker 1: hosts here, Bob Guiney.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I hope you're doing well.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And thank you so much for tuning in and listening.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We have a very exciting podcast today. I'm actually super
- 0:18Speaker 1: excited because this is someone who came shortly after me
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the lineage of the Bachelors over the years, and
- 0:24Speaker 1: was the first year they put kind of a clever
- 0:26Speaker 1: twist on how they did the show, which we're going
- 0:28Speaker 1: to talk all about that. Let's bring him in. I
- 0:31Speaker 1: believe he would be Bachelor season six. It's Byron Velvick, Bachelor,
- 0:37Speaker 1: pro fisherman and all around awesome dude.
- 0:40Speaker 2: What's up Byron?
- 0:42Speaker 3: There he is, Bob Guiney.
- 0:44Speaker 2: How you doing, buddy, dude.
- 0:46Speaker 3: I'm doing good. How about you? Oh man?
- 0:48Speaker 2: I am so good. Thank you so much for getting
- 0:50Speaker 2: on the show with us. I really appreciate it.
- 0:52Speaker 3: Hey, thanks for having me on the show. I really
- 0:55Speaker 3: appreciate the invitation.
- 0:56Speaker 1: When they called you for the show, and I want
- 0:58Speaker 1: to hear about all of it. I want to know
- 1:00Speaker 1: how they found you. All that kind of stuff. But
- 1:01Speaker 1: I mean, you were already a big deal in the
- 1:04Speaker 1: professional fishing world, so this had to be kind of
- 1:07Speaker 1: a really cool situation, I guess, kind of bringing two
- 1:11Speaker 1: major worlds together.
- 1:12Speaker 2: I mean, it had to just explode for you. I
- 1:14Speaker 2: would think, you.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Know, you know, Bobby, it was surreal because I'm back
- 1:17Speaker 3: East fishing, I'm on tour. I'm a bass gypsy. I mean,
- 1:21Speaker 3: I'm literally sleeping at campgrounds and I'd never watched the
- 1:24Speaker 3: show in my life, and I had no clue what
- 1:26Speaker 3: The Bachelor was. But I was fishing all the tournaments
- 1:29Speaker 3: and one two US Opens. There's US Open trophy there
- 1:32Speaker 3: and another US Open trophy there. That pinball machine is
- 1:34Speaker 3: called Fishtails. I had a fishing agent, and after I
- 1:38Speaker 3: won my second US Open, she gifted me that pinball
- 1:41Speaker 3: machine as a congratulations winning my second US Open. So
- 1:44Speaker 3: I'm doing all this stuff. I'm a forty year old
- 1:47Speaker 3: divorced bass fisherman and my friends are watching The Bachelor,
- 1:50Speaker 3: and they're like, hey, you need to be on this show.
- 1:52Speaker 3: And I didn't even know what they were talking about, dude.
- 1:54Speaker 3: So when the Bachelor called, they wanted me to send
- 1:57Speaker 3: them pictures of me, you know, like like find out like, hey,
- 2:01Speaker 3: I know, do you wear a belt buckle? Do you
- 2:03Speaker 3: chew tobacco? What is a fisherman going to look like?
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, they're exciting, they're stereotyping me as a fisherman,
- 2:13Speaker 3: and they're kind of apprehensive. I said, I got to
- 2:15Speaker 3: go to Kinkos, you remember, back in the day. Yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 3: I'm gonna go ride to Charlotte, North Carolina. That's the
- 2:20Speaker 3: closest town to this lake. And if you guys want pictures,
- 2:22Speaker 3: all I have to send them from Kinkos.
- 2:24Speaker 2: That's funny. They're like, okay, you know what, they go,
- 2:27Speaker 2: We just we need pictures of you.
- 2:28Speaker 3: It was primitive internet, so there was no internet, have
- 2:32Speaker 3: Wi Fi. I was twenty one years ago.
- 2:33Speaker 1: Dude's I was going to say, yeah, because I was
- 2:35Speaker 1: two thousand and four. You were two seasons after me.
- 2:38Speaker 1: You were two thousand and five at least, right, I mean,
- 2:40Speaker 1: I think it.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Was Jesse Palmer was right before me.
- 2:43Speaker 2: It was Jesse.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Where it was Jesse Palmer after you? Or was there
- 2:45Speaker 3: somebody else after you?
- 2:47Speaker 1: I was right, I was before Jesse. So I was
- 2:49Speaker 1: two thousand and three, two thousand and four, and then Jesse.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I think it was two thousand and four, which means
- 2:53Speaker 1: you were probably two thousand and four, two thousand and
- 2:55Speaker 1: five somewhere right now, because they were shooting them back
- 2:57Speaker 1: to back back.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Then right now.
- 2:58Speaker 3: It was crazy, right.
- 3:00Speaker 1: So when you get the call and they're like, okay,
- 3:02Speaker 1: we want you to come on the show.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Is your family and your friends are they just like,
- 3:05Speaker 2: what this is crazy?
- 3:07Speaker 3: Well? I had never seen the show, and so my
- 3:10Speaker 3: friends were excited. My two friends in Vegas that were
- 3:12Speaker 3: friends with one of the girls that had some connection
- 3:15Speaker 3: to the Bachelor, and they said, hey, we're looking for
- 3:17Speaker 3: the next Bachelor, and they go, do you know anybody
- 3:19Speaker 3: in Vegas? And so my friend Carrie and Jason are like,
- 3:22Speaker 3: oh my god, Jason's best friend would be great. He's divorced,
- 3:26Speaker 3: but he's on the road fishing, but he would be
- 3:29Speaker 3: every time we watched the show. We said, this friend
- 3:31Speaker 3: of Jason's, Byron, my best friend with him and his
- 3:33Speaker 3: care they'd have the Bachelor watching parties on Wednesday nights. Yeah,
- 3:36Speaker 3: you know yeah, And they're like putting me in the ring.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And so they're they're telling the producers the casting directors
- 3:43Speaker 3: about me, and they're like, well, explain this guy to
- 3:46Speaker 3: us and A. I was divorced, and I was much
- 3:47Speaker 3: older than most of the Bachelor's Dude, I was forty
- 3:50Speaker 3: when I did this show.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Right, yeah, and at the time before you, I was
- 3:55Speaker 1: the oldest at thirty two.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Oh no way, yeah, yeah, yeah. When you were on Tristan.
- 4:00Speaker 3: If I remember, you were on Trista's show first, and
- 4:03Speaker 3: then they brought you back and gave you your own
- 4:04Speaker 3: show after.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yes, yep, I was like the region the lovable loser.
- 4:08Speaker 1: I guess you know. They're like, oh, that's.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Awesome with me. They had they had the two guys,
- 4:13Speaker 3: they had me and Jay overby, and they did so
- 4:17Speaker 3: I didn't get that. I thought at the very end,
- 4:19Speaker 3: I was still going home, like I couldn't believe Bob.
- 4:22Speaker 3: When they were auditioning me, they I'm going around fishing
- 4:25Speaker 3: in my little astrot or my little truck with my boat,
- 4:28Speaker 3: and I get a call and they're like, hey, we
- 4:29Speaker 3: need you in La tomorrow. Can you get to the
- 4:32Speaker 3: nearest airport. I'm like, well, I'm in between tournaments right now, Bob.
- 4:35Speaker 3: I was being abducted by ABC brass as like aliens
- 4:39Speaker 3: because I'm staying at the worst hotels or campgrounds I
- 4:43Speaker 3: get on a I go to the airport. There's a
- 4:45Speaker 3: one way I mean there's a round trip first class
- 4:47Speaker 3: plane ticket waiting for me.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Oh my god, you know the deal.
- 4:50Speaker 3: There's a limousine, there's a driver waiting for you. Yeah,
- 4:53Speaker 3: at the airport and burbank and it's like, hello, mister Velvick.
- 4:56Speaker 3: And I'm like, mister Velvick, like, my dad's not here.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And then they have to they have a little signage
- 5:02Speaker 3: and they put me in there and take me to
- 5:03Speaker 3: a penthouse and I'm having sushi at sunset with the
- 5:06Speaker 3: ABC people and they're just betting us. Do you remember
- 5:08Speaker 3: they're just vetting us, right, they're getting to know. Yeah.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And every time they ask me, they'd say, why are
- 5:13Speaker 3: you what makes you America's most eligible bachelor? I go,
- 5:16Speaker 3: I'm not you guys keep calling me. I've never seen
- 5:18Speaker 3: the show. I'm not America's most eligible Bachelor. I don't.
- 5:22Speaker 3: I'm not even trying out for this thing. See.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And I think, honest to God, like when I talk
- 5:27Speaker 1: about our era, because I believe you and I are
- 5:30Speaker 1: of the same era of that show, I think we're
- 5:33Speaker 1: the same guy. Like I literally said to them, I'm
- 5:34Speaker 1: like I'm not.
- 5:35Speaker 2: You know.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I remember even at my first row ceremony, I remember
- 5:38Speaker 1: saying to the ladies, like, ladies, look, if you go
- 5:41Speaker 1: home tonight, you're welcome because this is a disaster, you
- 5:44Speaker 1: know what, you know, being honest, you know, I'm like,
- 5:50Speaker 1: there's no uh, you know, we're not hot air balloon
- 5:53Speaker 1: dating in Detroit. We're not taking a chopper into a
- 5:56Speaker 1: you know, volcano in Detroit.
- 5:59Speaker 3: You know we're going out.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We're going out for dinner and maybe going to windsor
- 6:01Speaker 1: you know, that's what they're doing tonight, to the casino
- 6:06Speaker 1: as a fun. But yeah, I love that you had
- 6:09Speaker 1: that kind of mindset. I'm sure that's what made him
- 6:11Speaker 1: love you.
- 6:11Speaker 3: They kept they kept scratching off the hard questions because
- 6:14Speaker 3: they go, you know, all these five thousand guys tried
- 6:16Speaker 3: out to the Bachelor, and there's me going, I don't know.
- 6:18Speaker 3: I've watched the Weather Channel, I watched Jesse James, Monster Garage.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You know, I'm watching just a few shows. I go,
- 6:24Speaker 3: this is a dating reality show. And they kept telling me,
- 6:27Speaker 3: they go, do you do you want to find somebody?
- 6:30Speaker 3: And I said absolutely, Like I was married and I
- 6:33Speaker 3: loved being married, and I liked that feeling of that
- 6:36Speaker 3: ring on my finger and having that commitment no matter
- 6:38Speaker 3: where I was in the country, I wanted that. I go.
- 6:41Speaker 3: They go, well, we're going to get you the cleanest
- 6:43Speaker 3: dating pool. That's what Jason Carbone, my producer at the time. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:47Speaker 3: I hang up my producer, Jason Carbone. He goes, We're
- 6:49Speaker 3: going to get you the cleanest dating pool. We're going
- 6:51Speaker 3: to you know, vet these women. And they go, have
- 6:53Speaker 3: you ever done a dating service?
- 6:54Speaker 1: No?
- 6:55Speaker 3: I go, I'm back east fishing. I'm around the country.
- 6:57Speaker 3: I all I do is fish man and but I'd
- 7:00Speaker 3: love to have a relationship. And so to be forty
- 7:03Speaker 3: years old and they give that to you, Bob is
- 7:05Speaker 3: bizarre gift.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Huh.
- 7:07Speaker 1: And it was before dating apps and all that kind
- 7:08Speaker 1: of stuff too, So you know, now it's probably you know,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I guess people wouldn't be as blown away by having,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you know, the choice of you know, thirty people to
- 7:18Speaker 1: scroll through theoretically, but you actually got to meet all
- 7:21Speaker 1: of them in person.
- 7:22Speaker 3: I mean, well, well, you know.
- 7:24Speaker 2: To talk about that moment for a second with Jay, like,
- 7:27Speaker 2: so you.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You and Jy meet, I'm sure with the kype of
- 7:30Speaker 1: guy you are you probably hit it off right away
- 7:32Speaker 1: because you seem like that, like just kind of guy,
- 7:33Speaker 1: you big friends with everybody. I mean, was he was
- 7:37Speaker 1: it kind of crazy for him too, because this was
- 7:39Speaker 1: the first time they had done something like that with
- 7:41Speaker 1: two bachelors and then the ladies make the choice. You know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: So was it equally you know, awkward for him or
- 7:47Speaker 1: was it awkward or were you feeling like, oh my god,
- 7:49Speaker 1: I'm I'm auditioning for these women and then you know,
- 7:53Speaker 1: I mean that it is crazy.
- 7:55Speaker 3: It's so weird, Bob, because it's like, I go. I
- 7:58Speaker 3: kept saying, I go. I know, I'm gonna go home.
- 8:00Speaker 3: I mean, I can't believe I even got this far.
- 8:02Speaker 3: Every single time they called me back, I'm like, my
- 8:05Speaker 3: mom lives in southern California. It's a chance for me
- 8:07Speaker 3: to go say hi to my mom. Signed the non
- 8:09Speaker 3: disclosure in it, but I go, I'm getting an all
- 8:11Speaker 3: expense freed flight out there to California, get to say
- 8:14Speaker 3: hi to mom and see my friends, but can't tell
- 8:16Speaker 3: them what I'm doing, can't tell them all I'm there
- 8:18Speaker 3: and seeing and Bob seeing Jay overby at the end
- 8:21Speaker 3: was weird because you know, you go to the hotels.
- 8:23Speaker 3: You remember when we're first auditioning, you see other guys
- 8:26Speaker 3: at the gym, and you know they're probably there for
- 8:28Speaker 3: the same reason you are. But going across that line, right,
- 8:31Speaker 3: you're like, there's eight guys, ten guys, twelve guys at
- 8:34Speaker 3: a hotel and you're like, I think all these guys
- 8:36Speaker 3: are trying out for this bachelor thing with me, right,
- 8:38Speaker 3: it's crazy. And then Jay and I we were a
- 8:41Speaker 3: night and day. They had me as the city the
- 8:44Speaker 3: country boy, good old boy, fishing outdoor guy, and he
- 8:48Speaker 3: was pure New York City, didn't have a car, Did
- 8:51Speaker 3: I have a car? Lived ordered all his food take out,
- 8:54Speaker 3: did not drive, you know, realtor from New York City.
- 8:57Speaker 3: And it was two They went polar opposite. They wanted
- 9:00Speaker 3: did you want the New York City slicking real estate
- 9:02Speaker 3: agent or do you want that good old boy bass
- 9:04Speaker 3: fishermen that's out in the middle of nowhere, you know,
- 9:07Speaker 3: trying to catch a fish for a living.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Well, the women spoke, right, America spoke and I love it.
- 9:15Speaker 3: When I got the most roses that night, talk about
- 9:18Speaker 3: here crazy.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Did you have you ever talked to Jay since? Like,
- 9:21Speaker 2: did you guys ever keep in touch after that experience.
- 9:23Speaker 3: No, no, we never did. We didn't keep in touch
- 9:25Speaker 3: after that. We kind of went our separate ways, and
- 9:28Speaker 3: we didn't. We didn't have a lot in common at
- 9:30Speaker 3: all because we really were two totally different people.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Yeah, well obviously right. I mean it's like, you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: you guys just weren't. I couldn't imagine if you had
- 9:38Speaker 1: a list of like twenty things that you guys would
- 9:40Speaker 1: have in common. I don't think you would have gotten
- 9:43Speaker 1: to like probably five right at that point, because you guys.
- 9:46Speaker 3: If he doesn't have a car, he doesn't drive, he
- 9:48Speaker 3: orders take out his dry cleaners. I haven't can't remember
- 9:50Speaker 3: last time I went to with dry cleaners, dry cleaning
- 9:53Speaker 3: and ordering takeout. I mean, I'm so we we didn't mesh.
- 9:57Speaker 3: And he wanted a personal trainer for working out. I
- 9:59Speaker 3: just work out, right, I didn't. Yeah, yeah, trainer. He
- 10:01Speaker 3: wanted a personal trainer. And you know, I was like,
- 10:03Speaker 3: he had a lot more. He made the people at
- 10:06Speaker 3: the Bachelor jump through a lot more hoops than I did,
- 10:08Speaker 3: was my understanding. They're like, dude, you are so chill,
- 10:11Speaker 3: and you're so relaxed, and you're so you know, just
- 10:14Speaker 3: I'll just make it work on my own, Like, I
- 10:16Speaker 3: can't believe you guys picked me. So maybe at the
- 10:18Speaker 3: end of this there's going to be somebody really special
- 10:20Speaker 3: because as a four year old, like I said, divorce
- 10:22Speaker 3: bass Fisherman, why would they take me over all of
- 10:25Speaker 3: the different guys that really really tried out and probably
- 10:27Speaker 3: would have been a heck a lot better than I
- 10:29Speaker 3: was on this show. I don't know.
- 10:30Speaker 2: I don't know about that, buddy.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I think I honestly think for me, personality really carries it,
- 10:35Speaker 1: and your personality speaks for itself. And at the end
- 10:38Speaker 1: of the day, you got to be able to have
- 10:39Speaker 1: a conversation with anybody.
- 10:41Speaker 2: And you know, you and I both know you know.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Yes, they they find because Carbone was my producer and
- 10:47Speaker 1: he said pretty much the same thing to me, right,
- 10:49Speaker 1: But it was interesting because they find amazing people, amazing
- 10:52Speaker 1: women on those shows. But you probably realize that really
- 10:55Speaker 1: I say this a lot and I get heat for
- 10:57Speaker 1: it sometimes, but I hope you'll take it for how.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I meet it.
- 11:00Speaker 1: But I used to always say at the time, they'd
- 11:01Speaker 1: be like, you know, well, you're America's most eligible bachelor.
- 11:04Speaker 2: Might No, it has this show has nothing to do
- 11:06Speaker 2: with me.
- 11:06Speaker 1: It's called The Bachelor, but it's about these thirty women
- 11:09Speaker 1: who have never lost anything in their lives.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And I'm like, the I'm the monkey.
- 11:14Speaker 1: In the metal hand and out of flower right, and
- 11:15Speaker 1: so like, you couldn't hire anybody for this gag, you know.
- 11:19Speaker 1: But what I used to think about it that way,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and I would tell the new bachelors that, and I
- 11:22Speaker 1: would get in trouble for it. They'd be like, we don't, don't.
- 11:25Speaker 1: We don't need to be repeating that.
- 11:26Speaker 2: I'm like, howes I do with the guy?
- 11:28Speaker 3: You know? That's so cool. It's so cool to talk
- 11:31Speaker 3: to you because it's like I remember, I did a
- 11:33Speaker 3: game show a long time ago with one of them.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You don't get to talk to anybody that's had the
- 11:36Speaker 3: same experience as you like that now really a neat
- 11:39Speaker 3: moment because I'm actually talking to one of the few
- 11:41Speaker 3: people that has walked that walk with me in that experience,
- 11:45Speaker 3: and that's just that doesn't happen to me because everybody
- 11:48Speaker 3: just remembers you from the show, but they don't relate
- 11:51Speaker 3: to what you and I lived in.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It was nuts, It was nuts, and it was such
- 11:54Speaker 1: a different time for the show too.
- 11:56Speaker 3: So many people watched it because it wasn't diluted. You know,
- 11:59Speaker 3: there was a lot more people watching it because you
- 12:01Speaker 3: didn't have all the channels you got now and all
- 12:03Speaker 3: the internet streaming stuff you have, so a lot of
- 12:06Speaker 3: people were tuned in. And I'll never forget Bob. We're
- 12:09Speaker 3: on that private jet where you know when they fly
- 12:12Speaker 3: you around, and they're flying us back to see Mary's
- 12:14Speaker 3: family in Florida, Tampa, and Jason sits next to me,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and I'm looking down the window and stuff, and he goes,
- 12:20Speaker 3: he goes, I got to have the talk with you.
- 12:22Speaker 3: I mean, Jason Carbo. Right, Carbo says, I have to
- 12:25Speaker 3: talk to you. I go talk And he goes, you
- 12:27Speaker 3: see all those houses down there on the plane we're
- 12:29Speaker 3: looking down. He goes, yeah, I goes four out of
- 12:32Speaker 3: ten or three out of ten, or five out of ten, whatever,
- 12:34Speaker 3: he goes, those people will know you, and for the
- 12:36Speaker 3: next year you won't go through an airport without being recognized.
- 12:38Speaker 3: And I was like, whatever, you know what I'm saying, Like,
- 12:41Speaker 3: he's telling you the tsunami of stuff that's coming at
- 12:44Speaker 3: you and you're just with a bunch of people shooting
- 12:47Speaker 3: a show. But You're like, you don't realize what's coming,
- 12:50Speaker 3: and he's like, I got to give you the country.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I got to give you to come to Jesus that
- 12:54Speaker 3: for the next year, you will not walk through an
- 12:56Speaker 3: airport without being recognized. And it was. It was prophetic, man,
- 13:00Speaker 3: because if I'm at the Flying Jay getting gas in Midland, text,
- 13:03Speaker 3: nobody recognizes you when you're on the road fishing. But
- 13:05Speaker 3: once you go to a major city and you're at
- 13:07Speaker 3: a restaurant or you're at an airport. You know what
- 13:09Speaker 3: I'm talking about. Oh yeah, they look for it. They
- 13:12Speaker 3: looked for familiar faces, and it was Jason was right.
- 13:15Speaker 3: It took over a year before you stopped just being recognized.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I know.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I actually I cut my hair.
- 13:21Speaker 1: I remember I shaved my head like brushcut style at
- 13:24Speaker 1: one point because everyone's like, there's the curly headed guy.
- 13:26Speaker 2: And they either.
- 13:26Speaker 3: Thought I was. They either thought it was it was Bashard.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Bob or Evan Marriott, the you know, a millionaire whatever
- 13:33Speaker 1: the guy's name was, Joe Millionaire. I was either I
- 13:36Speaker 1: either get one or the other, and I'm like, I
- 13:37Speaker 1: gotta cut my hair. But it was like one of
- 13:39Speaker 1: those things where you know, I still laugh about to
- 13:41Speaker 1: this day. My mom you know who you know, our
- 13:44Speaker 1: moms are always our biggest fans, of course, and my
- 13:47Speaker 1: mom I would go, I would go into a grocery
- 13:49Speaker 1: store and I would walk around in grocery shop and
- 13:51Speaker 1: this is this is I'm talking like three and four
- 13:54Speaker 1: years ago, not even you know, not even back then
- 13:56Speaker 1: when it was crazy, and I would be no one
- 13:59Speaker 1: would notice me, right, I'd be like, oh, I'm goletna
- 14:01Speaker 1: say I'll go chicken tonight or maybe I'll do steak,
- 14:03Speaker 1: you know, but if my mom is there, my mom
- 14:05Speaker 1: would be like, oh everywhere I go there like, aren't
- 14:07Speaker 1: you pastor Bob's mom. I'm like, Mom, that is simply
- 14:09Speaker 1: not true. She's like, no, I'm telling it. They recognize
- 14:12Speaker 1: me everywhere. Like mo.
- 14:14Speaker 3: From the date were like, oh god, no hometown dates.
- 14:18Speaker 3: So she's living it, she's loving it.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Oh yeah, living her best life. So you did the show,
- 14:33Speaker 1: and I mean back then it was at its height
- 14:35Speaker 1: of viewership. I think now, you know, obviously social media
- 14:37Speaker 1: wasn't around back then, and so we weren't dealing with
- 14:41Speaker 1: all that kind of scrutiny and.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Stuff like that. But wasn't it kind of crazy too?
- 14:45Speaker 1: Like like especially like you were already in this kind
- 14:47Speaker 1: of elevated place, you know, with with the fishing tournaments
- 14:51Speaker 1: and things of that nature, where people already knew you
- 14:53Speaker 1: and knew you were so good at your craft. But
- 14:55Speaker 1: it's like now, all of a sudden, you're walking around
- 14:57Speaker 1: and you got everybody noticing you for something different, and
- 14:59Speaker 1: then we all got an opinion.
- 15:01Speaker 2: They all got an opinion, right.
- 15:02Speaker 1: So like everybody's, oh, you should have chosen Debbie, and
- 15:04Speaker 1: you're like, you didn't even meet Debbie.
- 15:05Speaker 2: You don't even know. You're done about it, but you know,
- 15:07Speaker 2: it was.
- 15:07Speaker 1: Kind of I sure it had to be kind of interesting.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Of course, we have you know in common. We have
- 15:12Speaker 1: you know Mary of course who she was on my season,
- 15:15Speaker 1: and then she came back because she saw you and
- 15:17Speaker 1: was like I need to meet that guy and loved Mary.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Thought she was wonderful. I mean, but it was kind
- 15:23Speaker 2: of crazy.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You were the first season that had two guys started off,
- 15:27Speaker 1: and you were also the first time that they allowed
- 15:29Speaker 1: anyone from a previous season to come back. If I'm
- 15:31Speaker 1: not mistaken, and our producers can check that, but I'm
- 15:34Speaker 1: pretty sure because even on my season, which was only
- 15:37Speaker 1: basically one season priority to yours filming. I remember after
- 15:41Speaker 1: my first Rose ceremony night, I said, you know, I
- 15:44Speaker 1: sent someone home who I was right on the just
- 15:47Speaker 1: for me. I didn't get enough time spend with it.
- 15:49Speaker 1: By the way, I was really interested. Is there any
- 15:51Speaker 1: way I could meet? Like nope, they don't break the
- 15:53Speaker 1: rules for anybody, you know. And then your season comes
- 15:55Speaker 1: along and it's just a rule breaking season. They got
- 15:57Speaker 1: two guys started off, and the women vote and then
- 15:59Speaker 1: you take around and they bring somebody back from a
- 16:01Speaker 1: previous season who sees you and is immediately in love.
- 16:04Speaker 1: And it's like, I mean, you know, God bless you
- 16:07Speaker 1: because I think the show needed all of those wrinkles
- 16:09Speaker 1: for sure. But that had to be crazy too, Like
- 16:11Speaker 1: all of a sudden, you have someone coming back who
- 16:14Speaker 1: you hadn't really watched the show previously, so you probably
- 16:16Speaker 1: didn't even know.
- 16:17Speaker 3: Her from that there why they were there?
- 16:19Speaker 2: Yeah, because you had two women come back, right.
- 16:22Speaker 3: You know? The routine is that you have a date
- 16:24Speaker 3: plan and you pick out they kind of pick out
- 16:25Speaker 3: the date, they pick out the girl. You guys talk
- 16:27Speaker 3: about it and it's like every night there's when it's
- 16:29Speaker 3: getting down towards the end, right, and then Bob one night.
- 16:32Speaker 3: One night, they're like, we're not picking anybody tonight, but
- 16:36Speaker 3: you need to get dressed. And there was a they
- 16:37Speaker 3: had Austin Aston Martin Austin, Martin Carr waiting for me,
- 16:41Speaker 3: and I drove downtown, but nobody's in the car with me.
- 16:44Speaker 3: I'm like, what's going on here? And I'd never seen
- 16:47Speaker 3: the show, so I think the reason they brought these
- 16:48Speaker 3: girl back is they knew I would have no clue
- 16:50Speaker 3: who these girls are. Come up an elevator, they come
- 16:53Speaker 3: up an elevator, they come out, and I'm thinking, I'm thinking,
- 16:56Speaker 3: like this is like one of those other ambush shows
- 17:00Speaker 3: where they're going to tell me some dirt about the
- 17:02Speaker 3: girls because it's down to the last ten. There's ten
- 17:04Speaker 3: girls left on the show. And then all of a sudden,
- 17:07Speaker 3: they take me to the downtown nasty area, like skid
- 17:11Speaker 3: row area, and there's this building that's all lit up
- 17:14Speaker 3: and they have candles everywhere, the typical bachelor set, and
- 17:17Speaker 3: they have the elevator and they have one of the
- 17:19Speaker 3: producers dressed up like a bartender, and they sit me
- 17:21Speaker 3: down in a chair and they have a cocktail. I
- 17:23Speaker 3: mean I'm on a date by myself in the middle
- 17:25Speaker 3: of the whole show, and I'm like, what is going on?
- 17:28Speaker 3: Why am I on a date by myself? I mean,
- 17:31Speaker 3: fancy are beautiful set, And this elevator opens up and
- 17:34Speaker 3: these two girls are there and they're both beautiful. But
- 17:36Speaker 3: I'm like, okay, and I'm thinking, maybe the girls are
- 17:39Speaker 3: there just to tell me some bad stuff on the
- 17:41Speaker 3: girls that are in the.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Show, right, all right, yes, that makes sense.
- 17:45Speaker 3: And so of course the audience is like, oh my god,
- 17:47Speaker 3: it's Heather from whatever season and Mary from Bob season.
- 17:50Speaker 3: You know. So the joke was on me because they
- 17:53Speaker 3: have to tell me they're what's called Bachelor All Stars.
- 17:56Speaker 3: And they all start they go, We're Bachelor All Stars
- 17:59Speaker 3: and I'm like, I have no idea what's going on?
- 18:01Speaker 3: And they go, well, we're coming back on the show.
- 18:03Speaker 3: And I'm like, do the ten girls back home know
- 18:05Speaker 3: about this?
- 18:07Speaker 2: They're gonna know, Yeah, they're gonna know.
- 18:08Speaker 4: It's gonna be a shark that's back there, like you
- 18:12Speaker 4: two girls are coming on, and they had they had
- 18:14Speaker 4: I think it was Heather and she was like an
- 18:16Speaker 4: outdoor newsgirl and she worked in the fishing industry, and
- 18:20Speaker 4: then married Algato from your season and I didn't know,
- 18:24Speaker 4: so that was that was wildly bizarre, and it was.
- 18:27Speaker 1: All that it was the first time they threw like
- 18:29Speaker 1: chum in the water, to use some fishing terms there,
- 18:31Speaker 1: I guess the first.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Time they ever did that. Thank you, buddy, thank you,
- 18:34Speaker 2: thank you.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But it was I had to I remember watching because
- 18:38Speaker 1: I at the time, I was still watching the show,
- 18:41Speaker 1: like I don't really watch it as much as I
- 18:42Speaker 1: probably should now, but as I remember watching the show,
- 18:45Speaker 1: and I'm like, oh my god, this is amazing because
- 18:47Speaker 1: I loved Mary, you know, and I and I knew Heather,
- 18:50Speaker 1: but I didn't know her as well. But I was like,
- 18:52Speaker 1: oh my god, this is gonna be so interesting because
- 18:54Speaker 1: you had some great women on your season already, but
- 18:57Speaker 1: it was like to bring that wrinkling automatically. All the
- 19:00Speaker 1: women are going to know who they are, right because
- 19:01Speaker 1: they're probably all fans of the show. Like I could
- 19:04Speaker 1: only imagine going back to that mansion with those with
- 19:07Speaker 1: those ladies and tell.
- 19:08Speaker 3: So Jason Carbone, he said, the whole time they're getting
- 19:11Speaker 3: to know me and I'm on the show, they're thinking, man,
- 19:14Speaker 3: Mary Delgado would be a great fit for this guy.
- 19:16Speaker 3: That's what they kept saying, you know, and so I'll
- 19:18Speaker 3: never forget Bob. I get out of this Austin Martin,
- 19:21Speaker 3: you know, downtown, and Jason grabs me. He was always
- 19:24Speaker 3: very dramatic with those big glasses, and he Goesron Byron,
- 19:28Speaker 3: he goes, this might be the night that changes the
- 19:31Speaker 3: rest of your life. He goes, enjoy and I'm like,
- 19:34Speaker 3: I like, I'm by myself. What are you talking about?
- 19:37Speaker 3: Like we're shooting b roll here, aren't we We're shooting
- 19:39Speaker 3: bole or something like like there's nobody with me, and
- 19:42Speaker 3: he goes, I'm just letting you know tonight's night that
- 19:44Speaker 3: might change your life, because he said through the course
- 19:46Speaker 3: of the show, he kept saying, Mary, Mary, you know,
- 19:49Speaker 3: we should really bring back Mary, And it was I
- 19:51Speaker 3: think they were kind of they were looking for a
- 19:53Speaker 3: successful bachelor, you know, they were and the older and
- 19:55Speaker 3: they were a successful show, a proposal and everything.
- 19:59Speaker 1: I'll never forget the night that I let Mary go
- 20:02Speaker 1: on my season of the show. And I don't know
- 20:06Speaker 1: who was more heartbroken me or Carbone, honestly, because he
- 20:11Speaker 1: was like he was like, I just think he's like,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know, honestly, for me, it was to be really honest,
- 20:18Speaker 1: I remember thinking Mary was more emotionally mature than I was,
- 20:23Speaker 1: to such a degree that she was she was ready
- 20:25Speaker 1: for that next step, and I was like uncertain, you
- 20:28Speaker 1: know what I mean.
- 20:28Speaker 2: And so I was like, I don't know how I feel.
- 20:30Speaker 1: And that's why I ended up dating after the show
- 20:32Speaker 1: instead of proposing, because I was still at this place.
- 20:35Speaker 3: You were in your thirties. I mean, look, you were
- 20:38Speaker 3: ten years younger than me, so I had lived that life.
- 20:41Speaker 3: I had dated. I'm like, I don't need to play
- 20:43Speaker 3: that field or the rock star card, Like I'm not
- 20:45Speaker 3: going to fall into you know, I'm not going to
- 20:47Speaker 3: come off the show and just start, you know, like
- 20:49Speaker 3: I've been there, done that, and I just forty years old.
- 20:52Speaker 3: It'd be nice to have a great relationship. And that's
- 20:54Speaker 3: where they they did. Yeah, they said this guy's legit.
- 20:58Speaker 3: I proposed on the show and we lasted yea for
- 21:00Speaker 3: four and a half years.
- 21:01Speaker 2: Yeah, which is amazing.
- 21:02Speaker 3: I mean, tried to make it work.
- 21:04Speaker 2: They needed the show, and I.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Think you're right, you know, I think from the standpoint
- 21:08Speaker 1: of the show needed a proposal, because if you think
- 21:13Speaker 1: about it, they they did not get one out of
- 21:15Speaker 1: Alex Michelle the first guy, or did they I don't think.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I don't know if they the interned is, but I know
- 21:20Speaker 1: they didn't get one out of they did with Andrew
- 21:23Speaker 1: fire or they didn't get one out of Aaron Burgie.
- 21:25Speaker 1: They got one with their Andrew Firestone, they didn't with
- 21:28Speaker 1: me right, and then Jesse didn't propose, and they and
- 21:32Speaker 1: so they needed someone who was serious about it.
- 21:34Speaker 2: Not that the other guys weren't serious, but you know,
- 21:37Speaker 2: it's like it's like you get a lottery ticket.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And you know, I've said this a few times when
- 21:41Speaker 1: talking about the Batch, like you get this lottery ticket
- 21:44Speaker 1: in life, where all of a sudden, here are thirty
- 21:46Speaker 1: women who all could be potentially great for you, you know,
- 21:50Speaker 1: and it's like right, but they might not be right,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and so you're not going to know until you go
- 21:55Speaker 1: through the process. And I was so excited when you
- 21:57Speaker 1: and Mary, you know, ended up together on the show.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And then you know, obviously four years together, five years
- 22:03Speaker 1: together by today's standard, that's a great relationship anyway.
- 22:05Speaker 2: But you go to a TV show.
- 22:06Speaker 1: That's that's next level, man, that's like Silver Anniversary style,
- 22:10Speaker 1: you know, from a TV show data, you know, situation,
- 22:13Speaker 1: and yeah, I mean obviously you guys didn't end up
- 22:15Speaker 1: getting married, but had a great relationship, had a great
- 22:18Speaker 1: run together. I think, you know, when people look back
- 22:21Speaker 1: at the show, they look so favorably upon your season
- 22:23Speaker 1: because it was a return of someone who they loved
- 22:25Speaker 1: from a season before. But it was also the women
- 22:28Speaker 1: got to choose the guy, you know, because that's the
- 22:31Speaker 1: other part about the show that is interesting, right, Like
- 22:33Speaker 1: all these women get out of the limo, you know,
- 22:35Speaker 1: most seasons, they don't know who it's going to be.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Yet now they do pretty regularly, but back then they
- 22:40Speaker 1: didn't know they get two guys, right, and now they've
- 22:43Speaker 1: got the ability to instead of just hoping for a rose,
- 22:46Speaker 1: they get to give the row. It was almost like
- 22:47Speaker 1: the Bachelorette. First episode was the Bacherette, the rest was
- 22:50Speaker 1: a bachelor.
- 22:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 22:51Speaker 3: It's kind of great, right, And what was cool they
- 22:53Speaker 3: actually I saw something come up years later that said
- 22:56Speaker 3: it was the most romantic proposal because I knew her
- 22:59Speaker 3: mom and dad didn't speak English, you know, that's from Cuba,
- 23:02Speaker 3: and they spoke Spanish. And I told the producers and said,
- 23:05Speaker 3: I'm gonna learn I want to know exactly how to
- 23:06Speaker 3: say will you marry me? In Spanish so her family,
- 23:09Speaker 3: her mom and dad, hear it, you know, without subtitles.
- 23:12Speaker 3: They want her mom and dad to hear me and
- 23:13Speaker 3: propose to her in Spanish, you know. And even now
- 23:16Speaker 3: kind of gives me some chills.
- 23:17Speaker 2: I love that you did that.
- 23:18Speaker 3: At the time, I'm like, I want to say it
- 23:20Speaker 3: in Spanish, so most importantly her mom and dad and
- 23:23Speaker 3: her hear it in their native language and they can
- 23:26Speaker 3: subtitle it. But but I wanted it to be special
- 23:29Speaker 3: because I went on that show. Bob and I had
- 23:32Speaker 3: a couple dear, dear, close people, one of which is
- 23:35Speaker 3: my grandfather, you know, the real I was talking about.
- 23:37Speaker 3: My grandfather always wanted me to have a great relationship
- 23:40Speaker 3: and always kept asking my mom when is he going
- 23:42Speaker 3: to find a good woman? When's he gonna find a
- 23:43Speaker 3: good woman. And then my dear friend Steve Oliver, I
- 23:45Speaker 3: had like a brother of mine, Jeff Oliver, when they
- 23:48Speaker 3: both passed away shortly before this thing, and they both
- 23:51Speaker 3: used to say Jeff was a Bachelor fan and he
- 23:53Speaker 3: always told his dad Steve, my mentor he goes Byron
- 23:57Speaker 3: needs to be on the Bachelor Byron needs on the match,
- 23:59Speaker 3: and then tragically I had at twenty uh, and it
- 24:01Speaker 3: was oh, my gosh, died at twenty and he was
- 24:04Speaker 3: a Bachelor fan. And my grandfather passes away, and then
- 24:07Speaker 3: all of a sudden, they start calling me, and I'm thinking,
- 24:10Speaker 3: this is like, I'm gonna be weird here, but that's
- 24:12Speaker 3: like divine intervention.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I was going to say divine invention. I was just
- 24:14Speaker 2: going to say.
- 24:15Speaker 3: That there's something at the end of this experience where
- 24:17Speaker 3: I'm going to take it very serious. If they picked
- 24:20Speaker 3: me and I become the one, I'm not messing around
- 24:22Speaker 3: with this. I took notes at night after the dates.
- 24:25Speaker 3: I would take notes back in my little room my dogs,
- 24:28Speaker 3: and my dog Sabrina was there, but I was taking
- 24:30Speaker 3: I had a whole I had all these diaries because
- 24:32Speaker 3: I'm like, for you, you weren't in that place. But
- 24:35Speaker 3: at forty years old and being divorced, I was totally
- 24:37Speaker 3: in that place. Like I was totally in that place.
- 24:39Speaker 3: And and my two people that were the closest to
- 24:42Speaker 3: me that passed away, I'm like, this is happening for
- 24:44Speaker 3: a reason. Maybe the one is at the end of it.
- 24:47Speaker 3: And I wanted so badly for the one to be
- 24:50Speaker 3: at the end of it. And uh and so yeah,
- 24:53Speaker 3: when I proposed to Mary and those you know, the
- 24:55Speaker 3: beginning of that relationship, I was one hundred percent convinced
- 24:58Speaker 3: that this was our this was our destiny. And The Bachelor,
- 25:01Speaker 3: like Trista and Ryan, this this show put me Arey
- 25:03Speaker 3: and I together, brought you guys together. Yeah, because because
- 25:06Speaker 3: why else would I be on The Bachelor unless Grandpa
- 25:09Speaker 3: and Jeff Oliver. You know, we're handing me an opportunity
- 25:12Speaker 3: to meet somebody. I wasn't gonna meet him fishing. I
- 25:15Speaker 3: wasn't a campground in Mississippi.
- 25:19Speaker 2: I love that, man, Byron, I love that story. I
- 25:22Speaker 2: did not know that. I love that. I think that's
- 25:24Speaker 2: so special man.
- 25:25Speaker 1: That shows you know why your sincerity really, you know,
- 25:29Speaker 1: really showed through because you were in this right place
- 25:31Speaker 1: of mind. And I mean, you know, nothing like heartbreak
- 25:33Speaker 1: to set you up for for you know, love, right,
- 25:36Speaker 1: I mean, you had this heartbreak that really made you
- 25:38Speaker 1: kind of do a gut check on yourself where you
- 25:40Speaker 1: were in your life.
- 25:41Speaker 2: I love that. I absolutely love that. Now.
- 25:43Speaker 3: I saw Steve Oliver right aftering that show. Steve was
- 25:46Speaker 3: the dad Steve was Jeff's dad, and uh, right after
- 25:49Speaker 3: the show, when when we got to come out from
- 25:51Speaker 3: under our you know, NDA and everything, Yeah, yeah, I
- 25:53Speaker 3: gave him a big hug and I said, you know,
- 25:55Speaker 3: this is Jeff Jeff. I want to get emotional, you know,
- 25:58Speaker 3: I go, you know, Jeff, Jeff, that's Jeff making this happen.
- 26:01Speaker 3: And we both had tears in our eyes and we're
- 26:02Speaker 3: just like, yep, that's that's Jeff and Grandpa and they
- 26:05Speaker 3: made they they made this happen. Because how does how
- 26:08Speaker 3: does a guy get discovered, you know, out of the
- 26:10Speaker 3: left field back east, just fishing professionally and get called
- 26:14Speaker 3: up and ABC turns him into the Bachelor. So so
- 26:17Speaker 3: I to this day, I was like, that was meant
- 26:19Speaker 3: to be something. What a life?
- 26:22Speaker 1: Yeah change, And you know what, I think there's different
- 26:25Speaker 1: levels of success for for relationships too, Like you know,
- 26:28Speaker 1: your relationship was a success even though it didn't you know,
- 26:31Speaker 1: culminate in forever, it doesn't mean it didn't have a
- 26:33Speaker 1: huge impact on your life and your heart and and
- 26:36Speaker 1: where you are today.
- 26:36Speaker 2: And I think that you know, we all meet the.
- 26:38Speaker 1: People we meet in life for for for different reasons
- 26:41Speaker 1: and for different times, you know, and and good for you, man,
- 26:44Speaker 1: I love I love that story, and I love hearing
- 26:46Speaker 1: about your connection to your friend and your grandpa and it's.
- 26:49Speaker 3: It was touching.
- 26:49Speaker 2: It was touch and touching.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but the life experience, you know, you go, you
- 26:53Speaker 3: go into this place where you lose our, your anonymity,
- 26:54Speaker 3: and boy, you realize how pressure it is to be anonymous. Like, yeah,
- 26:58Speaker 3: you go back, you know, you when you finally get
- 27:00Speaker 3: back to the point where people aren't recognizing you, and
- 27:02Speaker 3: I got God, I really feel bad for Heather Locklear
- 27:04Speaker 3: and you know, or Brad Pitt or Jen Aniston or
- 27:08Speaker 3: you know all those all the people that lived under
- 27:11Speaker 3: that light the whole time because forever. Yeah, yeah, I
- 27:14Speaker 3: can't imagine, because I really enjoyed it. When I finally
- 27:17Speaker 3: stopped being you know, I went back into fishing. I
- 27:19Speaker 3: didn't want to become anything else. Besides, we'll go right
- 27:22Speaker 3: back into professional fishing and share you on TV shows
- 27:25Speaker 3: on ESPN and all that stuff. And so it was
- 27:27Speaker 3: a springboard form of more fishing television, which is where
- 27:29Speaker 3: my heart was at right.
- 27:31Speaker 2: No, I love that.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I love that, and it's what a better entree to,
- 27:35Speaker 1: you know, go back to where you were, just going
- 27:38Speaker 1: back with a little bit even more, not that you'd
- 27:41Speaker 1: already had huge success in your industry, but now you
- 27:43Speaker 1: go back a little more notoriety and maybe can bring
- 27:45Speaker 1: some fans from other walks who didn't know about professional
- 27:48Speaker 1: fishing or as much about what you had done already
- 27:51Speaker 1: and accomplished already, and now they do. And yeah, I
- 27:53Speaker 1: love I love the whole thing, man, I think it's
- 27:55Speaker 1: so awesome. Now.
- 27:56Speaker 2: I know you have a daughter, right so yep.
- 28:00Speaker 3: And thirteen thirteen years old. She'll tell you she's fourteen
- 28:04Speaker 3: and a half and she's every day to that. She
- 28:05Speaker 3: got to say it. She's fifteen and every day I
- 28:07Speaker 3: take her to school and every day I drop her off.
- 28:09Speaker 3: And right now, the reason we're perfect at one thirty is,
- 28:12Speaker 3: you know, at three thirty I turned into a dad
- 28:14Speaker 3: pumpkin again. I think she either has put vaulting this
- 28:16Speaker 3: afternoon or she's a pole vaulter and a volleyball player.
- 28:19Speaker 3: So I know, at fourteen you just run them around
- 28:22Speaker 3: to their sports. But I'm single dadding it, so yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 3: full blown single dad and spend all my time, you
- 28:28Speaker 3: know now really just kind of working on some fishing stuff.
- 28:31Speaker 3: I do the podcast. I work with my sponsors, and
- 28:35Speaker 3: but everything is based here in San Antonio because my
- 28:37Speaker 3: daughter goes to school every day, you know, six miles
- 28:40Speaker 3: away from my house right here.
- 28:41Speaker 2: I love it.
- 28:53Speaker 1: Well, Okay, so I know you you you know you're
- 28:56Speaker 1: not necessarily you're not married any longer.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Are you dating now? Are you? Are you?
- 29:00Speaker 2: Are you out there?
- 29:01Speaker 1: And what's it like to be the former Bachelor and
- 29:05Speaker 1: to be dating?
- 29:06Speaker 2: Is that crazy?
- 29:08Speaker 3: Dating isn't easy because when you have a minor child,
- 29:10Speaker 3: it's difficult because you're focused on It's like I always said,
- 29:14Speaker 3: who really wants to see you? When you have you know,
- 29:17Speaker 3: you don't have I don't have anybody else sharing custody,
- 29:20Speaker 3: and it's not like I have babysitters and you know people,
- 29:23Speaker 3: so ultimately it's it's difficult. Dating is really difficult and challenging.
- 29:28Speaker 3: And I knew early on when I had to quit
- 29:30Speaker 3: my career and come home when the divorce started and
- 29:33Speaker 3: it came out of left field at twenty sixteen, I
- 29:35Speaker 3: had to leave a very lucrative job because by then
- 29:38Speaker 3: I was doing television, I had sponsors, I was working,
- 29:41Speaker 3: I had because of the Bachelor. The TV thing exploded
- 29:44Speaker 3: in outdoor programming. And then suddenly I realized the wheels
- 29:48Speaker 3: were coming off back home, and I had a five
- 29:50Speaker 3: year old daughter at the house, and I'm like, I
- 29:52Speaker 3: got to go home. So I was in the middle
- 29:54Speaker 3: of my I was at the beginning of my season.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I had just fished Florida. I was on my way
- 29:57Speaker 3: to South Carolina for the next tournament, and I finally
- 30:00Speaker 3: got the wake up call that I I gotta I
- 30:03Speaker 3: gotta call my sponsors everybody and drive home and and
- 30:06Speaker 3: circle the wagon and become a full time dad or
- 30:09Speaker 3: or you know, get into that thing with dad where
- 30:11Speaker 3: it's like so once you do that, Bob, it's not easy, man,
- 30:15Speaker 3: because suddenly you got this little girl. It's like, you know,
- 30:18Speaker 3: it's who are you going to bring into her life.
- 30:21Speaker 3: I don't want to ask her there just to help
- 30:22Speaker 3: raise her, and I don't want to put put that
- 30:25Speaker 3: on anybody or have a relationship that's not worth anything
- 30:28Speaker 3: except that my daughter loves the girl, and the girl
- 30:30Speaker 3: loves my daughter. So now you can't you know, you
- 30:32Speaker 3: can't even value how that relationship is because you're so
- 30:35Speaker 3: busy say well, my daughter loves her, she loves my daughter,
- 30:38Speaker 3: so even though this thing would have never lasted under
- 30:40Speaker 3: normal circumstances. Now I'm gonna let this thing, or what
- 30:43Speaker 3: if the girl just doesn't like me and leaves and
- 30:45Speaker 3: breaks my daughter's heart? There were hearts, Yeah, you know,
- 30:49Speaker 3: there was too many moving parts. So I said, I
- 30:51Speaker 3: got to protect my kid. And dating with a minor
- 30:54Speaker 3: child is not a good, not a good, not a
- 30:57Speaker 3: good situation.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I could imagine it'd be tough too, Like you
- 30:59Speaker 1: don't want to parading random's in, you know, And yeah,
- 31:03Speaker 1: I totally understand that.
- 31:05Speaker 3: Dude, she didn't even know I was on The Bachelor.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I kept it a secret until she was twelve. Seven.
- 31:10Speaker 3: Is amazing people would come up and recognize me, And
- 31:13Speaker 3: you said this earlier. You know, when people come up
- 31:15Speaker 3: and they recognize you, you hope they say, aren't you
- 31:17Speaker 3: the Fishermen? And then you feel this connection, right, but
- 31:20Speaker 3: they aren't you? And they said the Bachelor. You're like, uh,
- 31:24Speaker 3: because then they're going to ask you about the current show,
- 31:26Speaker 3: which I haven't watched, or yeast season, and I go,
- 31:29Speaker 3: I never watched it after I left the show. It's
- 31:31Speaker 3: just sorry, but I didn't have a podcast or aning.
- 31:33Speaker 3: I had no reason to watch it, so people think
- 31:36Speaker 3: that you're following the franchise. And I'm like, I was
- 31:39Speaker 3: in and out. I was in, I did the show,
- 31:41Speaker 3: and I was back to fishing.
- 31:42Speaker 1: Yeah, you said that to me the other day. You're like,
- 31:44Speaker 1: I didn't watch it before I was on it, and
- 31:45Speaker 1: I didn't watch it.
- 31:46Speaker 2: After it since.
- 31:47Speaker 3: But my daughter's twelve years old, Bob, and she's had
- 31:49Speaker 3: her little swim thing and the coach is there, and
- 31:52Speaker 3: the coach's daughter comes running out to the parking lot
- 31:54Speaker 3: because the coach, my daughter's swim coach tells her daughter,
- 31:57Speaker 3: who's back from college, Byron's the Bachelor. This little girl
- 32:01Speaker 3: comes right off to the parking lot. I'll never forget it.
- 32:03Speaker 3: She's like, oh my god, oh my god. She goes,
- 32:05Speaker 3: my mom just told me you're the Bachelor. And my
- 32:07Speaker 3: daughter's twelve. She goes, what what And the girl goes,
- 32:10Speaker 3: you're the Bachelor. I go, no, no, no, I'm a
- 32:12Speaker 3: fishing guy and I did a segment on that show.
- 32:14Speaker 3: And she goes, no, you weren't, No, you weren't your
- 32:16Speaker 3: Bachelor season six, and cam my daughter goes, my mom
- 32:20Speaker 3: watches that show. She says, her mom watches that show.
- 32:25Speaker 3: They're not even anymore. And I'm like Camber and so
- 32:29Speaker 3: about twelve years old, she found out I was on
- 32:31Speaker 3: the Bachelor. Took seven years.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Know what, you're a better man than me. My son.
- 32:38Speaker 1: I will literally take my son and both boys. I
- 32:41Speaker 1: have a seven year old and a four and a
- 32:42Speaker 1: half year old, and I'll take both boys to McDonald's playland,
- 32:45Speaker 1: right and they'll be up there playing and the little
- 32:49Speaker 1: you know, a fifteen or sixteen year old kid working
- 32:51Speaker 1: will come over with the tray with milkshakes and French
- 32:53Speaker 1: fries on them, and my son will yell from the place.
- 32:56Speaker 2: Cape, yeah, that's him. He'll take a picture with you.
- 32:58Speaker 1: I'm like, and my youngest ago, my youngest to say
- 33:03Speaker 1: he's Bob the Builder.
- 33:05Speaker 3: Bob the Builder. I love it.
- 33:07Speaker 1: So the oldest one knows, the oldest one knows about
- 33:10Speaker 1: the Bachelor, but it's never seen it. And then the
- 33:12Speaker 1: younger one, Uh, the younger one thinks I'm Bob the Builder.
- 33:14Speaker 1: So you know, from that perspective, I guess we both
- 33:17Speaker 1: have done a pretty decent job of shielding him from
- 33:19Speaker 1: some of that stuff.
- 33:20Speaker 2: But yeah, nice shot, nice job, man. I love hearing that.
- 33:23Speaker 3: Story. Yeah, I got a daughter that he doesn't need
- 33:26Speaker 3: to watch it, you know. And I only found out
- 33:28Speaker 3: just recently that you can actually see it online because
- 33:30Speaker 3: I was always told you couldn't see the early episodes.
- 33:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't know you could. I've never found.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Out last week that apparently they show up on two
- 33:39Speaker 3: B or something like that, like you can. I had
- 33:41Speaker 3: no idea that they released the early episodes. And I'm
- 33:44Speaker 3: giving it away now and I'm sure my daughter is
- 33:45Speaker 3: now going to go watch it, but she's never seen it.
- 33:48Speaker 3: I have DVDs, dude, all I got to the DVDs.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Same, Yeah, so if my mom has them somewhere, I
- 33:52Speaker 1: don't even know where they are.
- 33:53Speaker 3: But you know what's crazy is when we were in
- 33:55Speaker 3: the mix, we were doing so many promotions that I
- 33:58Speaker 3: never really watched the show, like, yeah, truly, I've never
- 34:01Speaker 3: sat and watched the DVDs. And you know, and now
- 34:04Speaker 3: that I know it might be streaming, like I never
- 34:06Speaker 3: ever watched the show, and a crazy thing happened. I
- 34:09Speaker 3: don't know if you experienced this, but like maybe eight
- 34:11Speaker 3: years ago or whatever it was, VH one aired the
- 34:14Speaker 3: whole franchise. Do you remember that?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Yes?
- 34:16Speaker 3: And so suddenly you were probably getting recognized again. I
- 34:18Speaker 3: was getting recognized again because VH one was airing The Bachelor,
- 34:22Speaker 3: So it's like all of a sudden, people were like, Hey,
- 34:24Speaker 3: I'm watching VH one right now and your seasons on.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Don't tell me who you picked, Like, don't tell me
- 34:29Speaker 3: who you picked? Hey, did you ever have the experience?
- 34:33Speaker 3: So I'm walking through an airport and people are like, hey,
- 34:36Speaker 3: don't pick don't pick Jennifer next week, like the show
- 34:39Speaker 3: was live. You're like what And They're like, I don't
- 34:42Speaker 3: know how you gave cart Carritt Kathy a rose, but
- 34:45Speaker 3: don't pick Jennifer. She's no good. And I'm like, dude,
- 34:48Speaker 3: that show was This is not a live show. It's
- 34:53Speaker 3: not in real time here. I'm not gonna put on
- 34:55Speaker 3: a suit next Wednesday and go back and give out
- 34:57Speaker 3: more roses. Well, that's funny.
- 35:00Speaker 2: That is so funny. I did. I used to get
- 35:02Speaker 2: it all the time. In fact, it was kind of interesting.
- 35:04Speaker 1: You know, my season was I think I'm not sure
- 35:08Speaker 1: how yours was at the end, but I noticed that
- 35:10Speaker 1: they at the time, they still liked to make it
- 35:13Speaker 1: look like it was going to be the other person
- 35:15Speaker 1: that you picked. So the edits toward the end were
- 35:17Speaker 1: really pushing that relationship, and then all of a sudden,
- 35:19Speaker 1: you propose to the other one.
- 35:20Speaker 2: So the crowd goes, oh my god. So I'll never forget.
- 35:23Speaker 1: The next day after the finale aired, and I chose
- 35:28Speaker 1: a woman named Estella, and Estella and I are on
- 35:30Speaker 1: our way to the airport and in the in the
- 35:32Speaker 1: on the radio, they're like, you know, can you believe
- 35:34Speaker 1: Bob picked her? I mean, we thought for sure. And
- 35:36Speaker 1: I felt so bad. I was like, you know, that's
- 35:38Speaker 1: just editing, right, It's.
- 35:39Speaker 2: Just that, Like I was because I felt so bad
- 35:40Speaker 2: because it was just editing.
- 35:41Speaker 1: I mean, obviously she she and I had a great relationship,
- 35:44Speaker 1: but I had a great relationship too with with the
- 35:46Speaker 1: with I mean really my whole Final four, but with
- 35:48Speaker 1: Kelly Joe in particular, and Estella, I felt like, I mean,
- 35:52Speaker 1: it was just it was so difficult, you know, at
- 35:53Speaker 1: that time. But yeah, look, man, it's so fun to
- 35:56Speaker 1: have you on and nice to connect with you. I mean,
- 35:58Speaker 1: I've heard just a nice stuff about you forever, and
- 36:01Speaker 1: it's so great. You know, when you meet somebody and
- 36:03Speaker 1: you hear great things and it's all true.
- 36:05Speaker 2: So I love. I love that I get to meet you. Man,
- 36:07Speaker 2: thank you for coming on the pod.
- 36:09Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Man, I appreciate it having me on.
- 36:11Speaker 3: And like I said, if anybody wants to cross over
- 36:13Speaker 3: and check out a podcast, I'm still every week I
- 36:15Speaker 3: do fishtails. You know, it's just a little it's probably
- 36:18Speaker 3: be boring to them unless they're like fishing, but it's
- 36:20Speaker 3: it's kind of fun to do that and it's keeping
- 36:22Speaker 3: me busy. And I just appreciate you guys calling to
- 36:24Speaker 3: have me on. And man, it's cool to talk to
- 36:26Speaker 3: one person that lived it. It's been years year. Aaron Bergie.
- 36:30Speaker 3: When we did a game show a million years ago,
- 36:33Speaker 3: Aaron was the only other person I could talk to
- 36:34Speaker 3: about the show. Man.
- 36:36Speaker 1: He's a great one too, isn't he. I love that dude, cool, great, Yeah,
- 36:40Speaker 1: absolutely love him. He Actually when I was still living
- 36:42Speaker 1: out in Seattle, he and I connected. We ran into
- 36:45Speaker 1: each other at the Kentucky Derby and yeah, and he
- 36:49Speaker 1: was like, man, we need to get together. And you know,
- 36:50Speaker 1: people say that kind of stuff all the time, right,
- 36:52Speaker 1: and and then all of a sudden he was like, Hey,
- 36:55Speaker 1: my wife and I are going to come out to Seattle.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Can we you know, can we can we get together?
- 36:59Speaker 1: I'm like, stay with us, and he did.
- 37:02Speaker 2: They did.
- 37:02Speaker 1: They came and stayed with us at our place and
- 37:04Speaker 1: we just had the greatest time with them. And and
- 37:06Speaker 1: so I meet it when I I mean it when
- 37:08Speaker 1: I say this to you, Byron, the invitation is open.
- 37:11Speaker 1: If ever you're coming to Michigan, please man, please keep
- 37:14Speaker 1: my number, give me a call and uh, and let's
- 37:17Speaker 1: get together and we'll have some fun and I'll show
- 37:19Speaker 1: you around some some spots over on the west side
- 37:22Speaker 1: of the state, which I'm sure you haven't seen too
- 37:23Speaker 1: much of yet.
- 37:24Speaker 3: I would love it if my daughter and I are
- 37:26Speaker 3: ever out that way. You know, who knows where travels
- 37:29Speaker 3: are gonna take us, but I would love to check
- 37:30Speaker 3: out Michigan with you. So hey, same thing with you.
- 37:33Speaker 3: If you come to San Antonio and you're gonna see
- 37:35Speaker 3: Riverwalk again, you know we're not. We're thirty minutes from Riverwalk,
- 37:38Speaker 3: so we'll come see you.
- 37:39Speaker 2: I will.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I'm gonna actually add San Antonio to your contact on
- 37:43Speaker 1: my phone because I want to. I want to make
- 37:45Speaker 1: sure I reach out to because I absolutely love that area.
- 37:47Speaker 1: I think it's so cool and it's such a great
- 37:49Speaker 1: area and you know people are great down there.
- 37:51Speaker 2: So yeah, well thank you man, thank you for joining
- 37:53Speaker 2: us too.
- 37:54Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for coming on the pod.
- 37:56Speaker 1: And uh, you know, like I said, my brother in
- 37:58Speaker 1: law and his i'll say his name, I'm Phil Maher,
- 38:00Speaker 1: my brother in law Jadie Tomorrow and Film Maher. They
- 38:03Speaker 1: are big added listeners of yours and they love the show.
- 38:07Speaker 1: So so when I I told him I'm not even
- 38:09Speaker 1: kiddy man, it was like they got is like all
- 38:11Speaker 1: of a sudden, I told him I was talking to Elvis.
- 38:12Speaker 2: They were like so fired up.
- 38:13Speaker 1: You know, They're like, told, we need to get him
- 38:15Speaker 1: into a walleye. We get him into walleye though we
- 38:17Speaker 1: got I'm like, all right, I'll let him know.
- 38:19Speaker 3: I need to have one of them on as a guest.
- 38:20Speaker 3: I could have Bob Guiney's brother on as a guest
- 38:22Speaker 3: on Fish Tank. That would be that would be a
- 38:25Speaker 3: nice full circle.
- 38:26Speaker 1: He will talk your ear off. I'm telling you, he's
- 38:28Speaker 1: he's he makes us look quiet.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's a good tie in Bob. I mean,
- 38:32Speaker 3: it's like every week we have a different guest. Why
- 38:34Speaker 3: not have him on and say that the connection with
- 38:36Speaker 3: this guy is it's Bob Guiney's brother. I did Bob's
- 38:39Speaker 3: podcast and now I got his brother. I'm talking and
- 38:42Speaker 3: we do fishing like or dude, I'm not. I will
- 38:46Speaker 3: one hundred percent do it because right now the sponsors
- 38:48Speaker 3: are saying, yeah, we do a bunch of bass stuff.
- 38:50Speaker 3: We did one saltwater guy who has a TV show.
- 38:53Speaker 3: He used to be a guest on my show when
- 38:54Speaker 3: I have a saltwater show on ESPN. So now he
- 38:57Speaker 3: has a show on ESPN call Unfathomed. And so we've
- 39:00Speaker 3: done a little bit of salt water. But I would
- 39:02Speaker 3: love to have your brother on Fishtails. If he's oh
- 39:04Speaker 3: my gosh, he will lose his mind. So I'm not joking,
- 39:08Speaker 3: Like if you text it and say okay, and then
- 39:09Speaker 3: I'll tie you. Yes, I'll say, guys, this is cool.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Because Bob had me on his podcast. We got to
- 39:15Speaker 3: talking about it and here's Bob Guiney's brother and let's
- 39:17Speaker 3: talk Walley. Dude, I'm not joking it.
- 39:20Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna text you. I'm gonna text you right.
- 39:22Speaker 1: At the end of this so that we can we
- 39:23Speaker 1: can connect about this because he would lose his mind.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I would love it and then I got my first guy.
- 39:29Speaker 3: It's my fast.
- 39:32Speaker 2: He will probably he'll probably want.
- 39:33Speaker 1: To pull in his buddy Phil, because Phil is even
- 39:35Speaker 1: more more of an avid guy than.
- 39:39Speaker 3: I wanted to be. Like you remember the Great White North,
- 39:41Speaker 3: you know.
- 39:41Speaker 5: The on I want you on his friend, I want
- 39:47Speaker 5: you in the studio, and then it's gonna be like like,
- 39:51Speaker 5: you know, how you doing?
- 39:52Speaker 3: Good?
- 39:52Speaker 2: Dog? I used to love that show.
- 39:56Speaker 3: Remember s c TV. Yeah, yes, it was amazing.
- 40:02Speaker 1: Oh my god, that you know they always say that's
