- 0:00When a spring is compressed, it builds up a tremendous power of
- 0:05potential energy, which gets released when the force that is
- 0:09compressing the spring is released.
- 0:12This is essentially how the vital force of desire operates
- 0:16when we try to suppress a drive through willpower or other forms
- 0:20of restraint. The resultant explosion of the
- 0:24force, when it gets a chance to express itself, sometimes goes
- 0:28far beyond what the normal drive would do if it's simply allowed
- 0:32to operate in the normal course. It is no wonder that attempts to
- 0:38control the vital through mental willpower eventually prove to
- 0:42not work. It is also no wonder that there
- 0:46are innumerable instances of individuals who have taken vows
- 0:50of chastity, for instance, who wind up engaging in pursuits
- 0:54that overcome the force of those vows.
- 0:59We try to enforce moral laws or rules on people, but find that
- 1:03somehow the vital Dr. succeeds in manifesting itself.
- 1:08Some individuals attempt to bring their vital nature under
- 1:11control through various forms of punishment or even torture, such
- 1:17as with a hair shirt or the use of the celise as a way to
- 1:22mortify the flesh. Some try to blame others for
- 1:25their failure to control various vital drives, leading to
- 1:29potential beatings, torture, ritual purifications, or murders
- 1:36in the name of some kind of moral purity.
- 1:39Witness the Salem Witch trials or the burning of Joan of Arc as
- 1:44extreme examples of an attempt to enforce morality on others to
- 1:49make up for the individual failures of the people holding
- 1:53the power to solve the Riddle of the vital drives.
- 1:58Some try to simply avoid the issue entirely by renouncing the
- 2:02active life, withdrawing from social relationships, and
- 2:07thereby avoiding much of the pressure and impulsion of the
- 2:11vital nature when it is exposed to various forms of temptation.
- 2:16Unfortunately, this approach does not actually solve the
- 2:20issue, but simply puts off the issue to a future time, place or
- 2:25circumstance. And in some cases we have
- 2:28learned about the renunciate when suddenly exposed to
- 2:33temptation, either through entering into a societal setting
- 2:37where having the issue come before him where he has his
- 2:40retreat, has been shown to lose control of the vital nature and
- 2:45either indulge the desire or manifest anger that arises due
- 2:52to the energy being suppressed and not otherwise directed or
- 2:55dissipated. Since it is clear that
- 2:59suppression does not work, nor does the use of punishment,
- 3:04torture, or any attempt to blame others for one's own inability
- 3:08to manage the vital forces in one's life, there must be
- 3:12another way. This also has led to various
- 3:16attempted solutions. One of these is the idea that
- 3:20one should just let nature take its course and indulge in these
- 3:23vital drives as they arise. That, of course, turns out to be
- 3:28a weak justification for a failure to address the need for
- 3:32development and change of human nature and winds up distracting
- 3:37the individual from focus on the goal.
- 3:41Another, even more radical method is to indulge the desire
- 3:45actively and purposely with the idea that through satiation it
- 3:51will be put to rest. Unfortunately, history of this
- 3:56approach tells us that it is the very rare individual who finds
- 4:00such a solution to actually succeed.
- 4:03And for the most part, the indulgence increases both the
- 4:07power of the drive and in many cases increases the dosage
- 4:13needed to achieve satiation as time goes on, leading to an ever
- 4:19increasing cycle of indulgence and satiation, but certainly not
- 4:23to rejection and a redirection of the energies to other and
- 4:28higher pursuits. If suppression, shifting of the
- 4:33blame, avoidance and indulgence do not work, we then have to
- 4:39find a way that does work. As Sri Aurobindo has noted,
- 4:44there is the separation of the witness consciousness from the
- 4:47external act of nature, which makes it easier to 1st remove
- 4:52any sanction for it and eventually reject the drive as
- 4:57something external that is trying to invade rather than
- 5:00something that is embedded as part of 1's own life and
- 5:03personality. He also points out that shifting
- 5:08the focus of the being to let the psychic being, the sole
- 5:12entity, take charge of the life and provide its objectives, its
- 5:17aspiration for spiritual fulfillment and a divine life
- 5:21changed the direction and focus of the vital energy.
- 5:27Each of these two methods have shown success in helping
- 5:31individuals overcome the force of desire without the negative
- 5:35effects of the other methods that have been attempted.
- 5:39Srioro Bindo notes quote. It is true that the mere
- 5:44suppression or holding down of desire is not enough, not by
- 5:48itself truly effective. But that does not mean that
- 5:52desires are to be indulged. It means that desires have not
- 5:56merely to be suppressed, but to be rejected from the nature.
- 6:01In place of desire there must be a single minded aspiration
- 6:06towards the Divine. End Quote Reference Sri
