- 2:00Kelly, good morning, How are you? Good morning, Dave.
- 2:02I'm great. How are you? I'm fine. We're gonna get to know
- 2:06Kelly a little bit better later in the show. We're gonna find out exactly
- 2:08what it is a Convention and Visitors Bureau does. What are some of the
- 2:13big events going on to Putnam County? And of course he always popular ten
- 2:15questions, are you ready for that? I'm ready? All right, good
- 2:20to go. It's bringing Hannah Gardner from the Canal Charleston Humane Association with our
- 2:24Adopt Me please spend of the week. Hannah, good morning, How are
- 2:27you great? How are you? I'm doing fine, Hannah, Kelly,
- 2:32Kelly, Hannah, Hello, Hello. All right, let's get right to
- 2:37our pet and we're trying to get adopted. This is the story of Sailor.
- 2:42Is the dog's name this week and I Sailor's pictures posted Dave Allen Radio
- 2:45and Facebook and at Dave A seventy on the well I'm still saying Twitter on
- 2:49the artists formerly known as Twitter known as x now Hannah's tell us about Sailor.
- 2:55Yes, the sailor is a thirteen ish year old boy. I don't
- 3:04believe he's fixed yet. But if he's not fixed, I don't know if
- 3:08they will do it just because of how bad, not how bad, how
- 3:14just how older he is. He does he is a little bit of a
- 3:17resource guarter, so when it comes to other dogs around him whenever he's eating
- 3:24his food, he doesn't really like that. So you're gonna want to make
- 3:29sure that you're either around and making sure that you're working with them when it
- 3:34comes to resource guarding, or just teach him to be in the crate or
- 3:40something along just eating away from other dogs or something along the lines of that.
- 3:46And we could also give you resources on that as well. He is
- 3:50very very laid back. He is very very very sweet, very very old,
- 3:55and as you can help in the pictures, he also looks like he
- 4:00is old. He's very frosty in the face, very very very very sweet.
- 4:05He's been in the back office with me for a couple of days now,
- 4:09and he doesn't do much. He just wants to lay around and he'll
- 4:14come up to you and lay his head on your lap if he wants you
- 4:16to put him and stuff, but he pretty much just lounges and that's about
- 4:20all. He has shown to be cat friendly as well. He's been in
- 4:25the foster home with some other cats and he'd never really paid attention to him
- 4:30much. He's seen them, but he never really did much. And if
- 4:34you have other dogs, he is sign with other calmer dogs. He doesn't
- 4:39really like the hyperactive of the younger dogs. He doesn't really want to be
- 4:44around dogs that are super playful. But if they are older like him,
- 4:48or if they are already calmed down and they don't really do much, or
- 4:54maybe they just play on their own, then I think he would be a
- 4:56great candidate. And he does show to be housebroken as well, because he
- 5:00holds his potties for a long time. That's awesome. He looks like he
- 5:05would be a perfect couch companion, keep your feet warm while you're watching while
- 5:11you're watching your Netflix. Yes, yes, he would be a great companion
- 5:15for just kind of hanging out. I'm sure he would be fine going like
- 5:21on a few little short, little walks and stuff too, if you just
- 5:25live in a small little neighborhood or if you just want to go on a
- 5:28short little walk. He's just a great dog. He needs he needs to
- 5:32spend, you know, the rest of his life in a home. The
- 5:38vet don't think too much about him living like too much longer. It could
- 5:44be a couple of months, it could be a year, but they don't
- 5:46think that he's gonna live too much longer. So we're definitely trying to encourage
- 5:50people to come and look at him and give him a chance and just let
- 5:55him live out what he has less in a home because he has a very
- 5:59very suitable way. How do you're thinking he's about twelve or thirteen? Is
- 6:03that right? Yeah, he's he's he's about twelve, folutine, And I
- 6:06guess I should also mention it's pretty important that he does seem like he is
- 6:13either fully deaf or partially deaf. He doesn't hear very well at all.
- 6:18You can holler for him and scream for him, but the moment that you
- 6:21start like kicking the ground or like hitting the wall or something, he can
- 6:26steel those vibrations. So I'm sure that he can tell that you're trying to
- 6:30get his attention, but if you're just hollering for him, he definitely does
- 6:33not hear that. And go ahead. I shouldn't say any idea what kind
- 6:39of dog that he is, because I mean, I'm not good at I
- 6:42guess any things. I looked at the picture. I mean, any idea
- 6:45what all he's got anim Hannah, Honestly, I am not sure he He's
- 6:50got a lot of skin issues going on. He's off a lot of his
- 6:57fur, like on his belly and on his arms and stuff. I don't
- 7:00know if you can really tell from the picture, but if you see him
- 7:03in person, you'll know that he's kind of balved on his belly and under
- 7:08his chin and stuff. But that's just from some allergies to some skin issues,
- 7:13and we have been given him most and for it. However, you
- 7:16know he would be perfectly fine without it, according to the vet texts and
- 7:24the events that have I've spoken with, But he could definitely continue that.
- 7:29They don't really think that he's going to have much hair grows back in those
- 7:32areas. It's just a matter of just keeping him nice and health happy and
- 7:38healthy and clinging. And he's really, really good he's he is about like
- 7:42fifty five pounds, I believe, so he's not that big. So he
- 7:46would be a great couch companion. And really I always try to, I
- 7:51guess throw this out there is try, you know, at least try an
- 7:55older dog, Hannah, because as you said, these dogs usually are just
- 8:01a lot more grateful. And you and I kind of got the backstory from
- 8:05you when you when you send me the information last night that this particular dog
- 8:09was given up because I guess his family just couldn't afford him anymore. Is
- 8:13that right? Yeah, Yeah, they did love him a lot. They
- 8:22definitely wanted him. It's just a matter of they just you know, with
- 8:26his skin and shoes and stuff at the time, they definitely could not afford
- 8:30that. And you know, we took him in with open arms, and
- 8:33we treated them and stuff, and we are just hoping that he gets a
- 8:37good home and can send out what he has less and that couch and a
- 8:41bed, washing TV and eating some scat food. All right, Dave Nation,
- 8:46this is your call to arms. We've done pretty good in getting these
- 8:50animals adopted. This would be a great, great pet for somebody, maybe
- 8:54an older person. Somebody said a text here Hannah and Kelly, it says,
- 8:56a dear Dave, Sailor is your spirit animal. Yeah, he's got
- 9:00gray on the face. He just wants to lounge around. He doesn't want
- 9:03to do a lot and he doesn't like a lot of noise. You're yeah,
- 9:07that's that's pretty much my spirit animal. We'll get back to Sailor here
- 9:09in a minute. Again. If you want to see Sailor's picture, it's
- 9:11posted on Dave Allen Radio and Facebook and at day A seventy on x.
- 9:16If you want a story that's truly going to warm your heart and make you
- 9:20say, well, maybe these kids they aren't all bad. On the Facebook
- 9:24page of the Canal Valley Humane Association, Hannah, which I shared last night
- 9:28on Dave Allen Radio. It's a story of a young lady locally here named
- 9:31Abbey. Now, Abbey just turned twelve and all she wanted for her birthday
- 9:37was donations for the pets of the shelter. That's what she told her family
- 9:41and friends. No gifts, I just want donations of pet supplies to be
- 9:46given. You gotta go over to the Canals Charst Humane Associations Facebook page and
- 9:50look at the amount of food that young Abbey was able to collect, Hannah,
- 9:54pretty good stuff. Yes, yes, she definitely did a great jobs.
- 10:00We're so very thankful for her, and we were so excited, you
- 10:03know that that's what she wanted to do for her birthday. And then we
- 10:07actually have another girl that's turning eight, I believe in a couple of weeks,
- 10:13and all she wants for her birthday is just to cuddle some puppies.
- 10:16So we're going to take some puppies to or for a birthday and let her
- 10:20cuddle on them and bring them back and hopefully they get adopted. That's that's
- 10:24that's awesome. What else are you needing, Hannah? As far as donations
- 10:28go right now at the shelter, I know that we need we need dog
- 10:33food, but you know, we have been getting a good bit of that
- 10:35in but you know, we could just we could always use more, and
- 10:39then we also could use a little bit of cat food as well, some
- 10:43cleaning supplies like bleach and down dish soap. And we also need dog collars.
- 10:52I know that we need dog collars. We always need those because every
- 10:56dog that walks to the door, we try to put a collar on there
- 11:00and so that way it can help us if we need to grab them and
- 11:03say good off the leash or something like that, and then we also could
- 11:07use some leashes. And we also have an Amazon wish list and a basic
- 11:13wish list for like physical items if you want to just go buy them yourself.
- 11:18We have that all on our website adopt shots from dot com, so
- 11:20if you want to go look at all of that, we have a whole
- 11:24list of things that we need and we update that quite freqularly. So well,
- 11:28hen I got a text here for you that somebody texted wanted to know
- 11:31as the shelter is needing donations for the Putnam shelter, are you doing anything
- 11:35with it because there's been some problems there with the Putnam County shelters or is
- 11:39the Canalege Shelter any way involved in helping them or do you know anything about
- 11:43that. I know that we have been helping him with with them with a
- 11:48few things, but with the donations aspect of it, I'm not entirely sure.
- 11:54Definitely found out and get back all right, we can do that next
- 11:56week when you're when you're back on with this next week, we'll fin I
- 11:58appreciate the texture texting in with that, Hannah, anything else going on to
- 12:03Shelter we need to know about, not currently. I do know that our
- 12:07kegs for Canine just coming up in September, so you know, we'll get
- 12:11more into that next time. But keep an eye out on that and look
- 12:15on our Facebook because we have all the details for that event. All right,
- 12:18Hannah, I appreciate you as always. We're talking again next week.
- 12:20Thanks a lot. Thank you and a gardener from the Canal Charles, remain
- 12:24association with our ADOTMI. Please pet of the Week Sailor, Kelly. I
- 12:28feel like I'm cooping and weekly now on the Han hotled Sailor and er out.
- 12:33Yeah, I'd like to scratching behind the years Cooper or the dog Okay,
- 12:39okay, sorry, okay, Well, we definitely would love to try
- 12:41to find Sailor a home again. Older dog twelve years old, twelve or
- 12:46thirteen, super sweet dog. We're probably doesn't have a whole lot, you
- 12:52know, a time left, so I mean just one and that's and Hannah
- 12:54was telling me that they actually kept the dog in the office there and that
- 13:00he just loved to just to just be around people and just kind of you
- 13:03know it's spirit animals, live out your last days. Yes, all right,
- 13:09so let's let's review before we go to break. Here the story of
- 13:13a sailor. Uh. He is twelve or thirteen. He's microchipped and vaccinated,
- 13:20has some hearing loss issues. I didn't know that when I put the
- 13:22post up, but apparently some hearing loss issues. Does fine with older dogs,
- 13:26or with calmer dogs, I should say, and with cats. Does
- 13:28has some issue with guarding his food, which again my spirit animals, so
- 13:33do I. Uh. He's a He's a sweet old man who just wants
- 13:37to lounge around and live out the rest of his life. So if you're
- 13:39looking for a great, great pet, this would be the one for you
- 13:43for sure. Go check it out. Picture posted on Dave Allen Radio and

- 17:19You ready for ten questions a little bit later on? I'm so excited Jim
- 17:22Strawn, who is mister excitement? Is what us? Right now? Are
- 17:26you? Man? I'm doing really, really, really really good. I
- 17:27tried to forewarn Kelly that you get a little, you know, edgy with
- 17:32these questions. I've got hers scared as I can. But well, she's
- 17:33done her homework, she's been listening to the show. She got this down.
- 17:37Shelly, good. How are you? I'm great in PC, Putnam
- 17:41County, doing well, always well? Yep. I love you, know.
- 17:42I was telling you off air. I had nine great years down there,
- 17:45Dave. I lived down there from ninety two to oh one. It
- 17:48was great. It was in this like Super Growth year. It was like,
- 17:52well, it's happening again. They lived through it, and it was
- 17:55great once you got home. But I loved the Little League down there.
- 17:57I love the growth, I love the store, I love the neighbors.
- 18:00I loved all the things we had to do. When I got to Putnam
- 18:03County, I just went ahead and stayed there all weekend. I worked in
- 18:04Charleston up in Kanawa City, but I loved the being in Putnam County and
- 18:10I umpired more Little League games, I think for them and to the face
- 18:15of the earth. I was at that baseball field eight hours a day Sunday.
- 18:18I've never seen yet another thing I learned about Jim Strown. I had
- 18:21no idea you were a baseball umpire. The equipment is still in my trunk.
- 18:23If they said, Jim, we got a game of five, can
- 18:26you call it? I'll be right there. And a basketball official two.
- 18:32I've done a little bit of that, but not officially. That's what Cooper
- 18:34should tell me. I didn't know that. Is there anything that Jim Strawn
- 18:37can't do. I have done a lot of different things. My claim to
- 18:40fame is I just got done saying this. I am not very smart.
- 18:42But I know a lot of things. I can do a lot of things.
- 18:45Okay, well that's all you need in I get to enjoy different things
- 18:48right now. One thing, one thing that you do better than anybody out
- 18:52there is MC events. I love I love Live leve By the way you
- 18:56know, and we're going live on the Levee. We only get two weeks.
- 19:00Tell us about Tight Yes, the mosas Otto Group live and Levy.
- 19:03We are in season nineteen, week number nine, Tonight of ten taking center
- 19:07stage on the Sombomb Stage. It had a riverfront park. At six thirty
- 19:11sharp will be Jeremy Short. We've had some very talented musicians this year from
- 19:15Eastern Kentucky and the mountains of Kentucky, and Jeremy Short is yet another one
- 19:21jam fueled Appalachian soul music with some country and some blue grass. He calls
- 19:26it the Appalachian Space funk. And speaking of funk, we have another band
- 19:30at seven forty five taking center stage for two forty five minute sets. They
- 19:34play an electrifying and contemporary funk sound. They've been together for about ten years.
- 19:40They're very enchanting, they're very engaging. I love funk music and this
- 19:45group is called Funk You and they are from down South. They've been together,
- 19:48like I said, over a decade. Very talented. I love this
- 19:52kind of music. The weather looks picture perfect. I mean it's going to
- 19:56be eighty, but it's not going to feel like eighty. It's gonna be
- 19:59a nice breeze and amidity is low and it doesn't appear to be any threat
- 20:03of vrain. So boaters get out there, bikers get out there, Walkers
- 20:06get on down to Haddo River Front Park six thirty will we will start.
- 20:11Come down for dinner, get your spearited beverages, stay hydrated. We got
- 20:14tons of food vendors. We're raising money as we do every Friday night.
- 20:18Great fun for a great cause. We help those five inner city charities with
- 20:22a fifty fifty drawing. We've raised one hundred and seventeen thousand dollars to last
- 20:26nighteteen Sayer's Day. Sere at so in that cool Kelly, that's a cool
- 20:29thing that we do. And we do that drawing about eight thirty five or
- 20:33so. It should be another big night. I they're all big in my
- 20:37opinion, and we only had a few lefts. So if you guys been
- 20:40waiting. If you guys been waiting for the summer to get down there,
- 20:42you know what are you waiting for? You got tonight left and next Friday
- 20:47just a little teaser. Next Friday is a big bash for the kiddos back
- 20:49to school. We're going to really cater to the kids. I'll talk more
- 20:52in detail next Friday. But tonight, get on down again. Six thirty
- 20:56we start with Jeremy Short seven forty five, two sets funk. You will
- 21:02take center stage and fuck you music all night long, and go ahead,
- 21:07and I think you hit this earlier on in the live of the Levy season
- 21:10gym, But go ahead and hit that because people have asked, you know
- 21:12me, why are they ending early earlier than normal? And so in case
- 21:18people miss that, city officials, we typically go from Memorial Day weekend all
- 21:22the way to Labor Day weekend, so they're they're backing out for a couple
- 21:26of weeks. So we're going to ended on August the eighteenth. School does
- 21:30start. I mean when day when you and I went to school, first
- 21:34day of school was a day after Labor Day? Ye always probably as well.
- 21:38I'm still be a heavily conditioned school starts a day after Labor Day.
- 21:41I'm sixty three. I've done a lot of school seasons. That's just the
- 21:45way it is in our body. But school starts earlier, and this this
- 21:48year in Kandall County, in the Kandalla Valley, I believe it's starting on
- 21:52that next Friday, the eighteenth, and so school starts early, and there's
- 21:57high school football and that seems to be getting started a little bit early too.
- 22:02So just I think conditionally the fall season is here after August eighteenth,
- 22:07even though it's still technically summer through mid September. But I think it's just
- 22:11to again cater to the kids, cater to the school schedule, cater to
- 22:15the Friday night lights. And it wasn't my decision, you know, Dave,
- 22:22I would be down at head Ed River Front Park fifty two fridays.
- 22:25If we have. You been down under in a snowstorm in January with your
- 22:29shorts on. My favorite is when the water is up over the stage and
- 22:34someone inevitably will put a picture out there. Excuse me, excuse someone,
- 22:38check on Jim. I don't see it now. I mean the waters,
- 22:41the waters over Jim's head. Somebody get down. The stays Jim So,
- 22:45I love I love Lion Levy. I love being down there with the people.
- 22:47The neighbors are great and it's just such a good time. But yeah,
- 22:49we're gonna we're gonna stop. The next Friday will be the final one
- 22:52and get ready for the school season. All right, sounds good. And
- 22:56we're gonna do a little funk tonight. Yeah, we're fucking, yeah,
- 22:59we're fucking we're working on a Friday night. All right, brother, that's
- 23:00so much fun to say. I appreciate you being here a jamp. We'll
- 23:03talk to you with the question. Thank you so much. I got a
- 23:07preview of them. I'm I'm gonna be listening. I'm a little concerned,
- 23:10Okay, all right, Jim Strong with Live on the Levy and again we're
- 23:14doing some funk music tonight. Uh and then uh it's it's over, I
- 23:18mean next week and next week, is it? I understand that, though,
- 23:22I mean, you know, because there's just so on one hand,
- 23:25somebody told me this the other day, Kelly, they said, why do
- 23:27we seem to rush everything these days? It's like we don't enjoy you know,
- 23:30October comes around, We've got Valentine's candy out, in the stores.
- 23:33You know, that's usually the way it works. And right now people are
- 23:36pushing I've seen people pushing fall stuff and here it's you know, we're we're
- 23:40in the middle of August here, not even quite to the middle of August
- 23:42yet. But that's just that's just what we do. And I understand their
- 23:45decision because against school, Like when I was in school, it was a
- 23:48day after Labor Day. Yeah, and hasn't been that way for quite some
- 23:52time because I'm old. Uh and uh, and so it is. Yeah,
- 23:56it's hard to compete with the high school football Friday nights. Yeah,
- 24:00yeah, And there's just so many other things going on. But you see,
- 24:03I know that you and your husband are both big music fans. You
- 24:06seem like this is the kind of music that you would because your husband actually
- 24:07plays in a band, right, he does. He plays in the Sled
- 24:11Dogs, the Sled Dogs, and I've seen them play. They're actually very
- 24:14very good. But it just seems like this would be something that you guys
- 24:17would enjoy them for sure. Unfortunately, we already have plans, but if
- 24:19not, we would be down there. We really enjoy going to live on
- 24:22the levee. And yeah, and my son would also really love He loves
- 24:26funk music, so he would be super into that. What has it made
- 24:30your son? Because how old is your son? He is sixteen? Okay,
- 24:33now, so what is it that made him first discover funk music?
- 24:37Oh, he just goes on kicks where he'll like get obsessed with one artist
- 24:40and then yeah, kicks, kicks. What what is kicks? Like?
- 24:44He'll listen to you know, he started with Billy Joel, I think,
- 24:47and he listened to Billy Joel for you know, six months. Kicks was
- 24:49like a platform. Yeah, because I'm so out of it. I thought
- 24:53when you said kicks, I thought it was some kind of a new platform.
- 24:56I just like obsessive listening. And so he's he's in a in a
- 25:00funk face. Currently. I'm still the guy that those Columbia House for all
- 25:03those cassettes. I bought the nineteen eighties, so but I did get the
- 25:07ten cassettes for one penny though I didn't get that. So I think that's
- 25:11great though, that younger people, because I was always a person that liked
- 25:15different music, mainly because I had the most eclectic family when it comes to
- 25:18music. I mean literally my family, you know, I got disco and
- 25:22whatever from from my mother by my dad's side of the family. He was
- 25:26Johnny Cash and it was a little Richard and Ray Charles and then I discovered
- 25:33music. But we had at our age, we actually had to go look
- 25:37to find music. I mean, we didn't have a YouTube or any kind
- 25:40of a downloading way to download music. These kids got it right there.
- 25:44It's so easy. They can just find anything. And he finds things that
- 25:48I don't even know about already. You know, I think that's great.
- 25:51I do too. He's you know, introduced me to a lot of new
- 25:52music. And we love that. That's your your sixteen year old was introducing
- 25:56you to music. That's a good thing. Our phone cost to five live's

- 27:06put Tony Hodge on the other side and let the fun begin. Well,
- 27:10I mean put Michael be on the left, so to speak literally, and
- 27:15figured that's right, Yeah, it sounds like a good time. I'll get
- 27:18my popcorn ready. Well, I think here's the thing about it. You
- 27:22know, in this in this world of political strife that we live in,
- 27:26where the other side is the enemy and you can't possibly I think having it
- 27:30may turn into a bloody brawl. I don't think it will be, because,
- 27:34I mean, at their core, despite the fact that the two of
- 27:37them may disagree of they're both decent human beings and they're both friends of mine.
- 27:41So I'm hoping that it'll it'll go down that route. But it is
- 27:45good that people can agree to set down and talk about that. I think
- 27:48that's so important in something that we've lost in recent years, the ability to
- 27:53sit and have a good conversation with somebody we don't always agree with. I
- 27:57think that's an important, important skill and important thing that we can all learn
- 28:03from. And I was talking to someone yesterday said, do you know,
- 28:06when, especially with social media, you get into all these arguments, you're
- 28:08not going to change anybody's mind, you know, on a Facebook post or
- 28:11Twitter or ax or whatever. You're not going to say, well, you
- 28:15know what, I've been pro life all these years, but I just read
- 28:17what you said. Now I'm suddenly pro choice. Or I was an anti
- 28:19Trump, now I'm pro Trump after I read what you said. It's just
- 28:22not gonna happen. You're not gonna change people's minds, but you can at
- 28:26least listen and have a discussion and try to understand people. So it's really
- 28:30important. That's what we're gonna try to do. So you don't want to
- 28:32miss that. Pushkin v Hodge Tuesday at nine oh seven or whatever time the

- 31:48let's get to know you time, all right, give us a little
- 31:52bio on Kelly Steele. Talk about Kelly Steele. Yeah, I'm referring to
- 31:55myself with the third person, Kelly Steele, Okay, go ahead. I
- 31:57grew up in Logan County, same place as you, Dave. Yeah,
- 32:00and unfortunately on the wrong end of the county though, being a Chapmanville person,
- 32:05I grew up on Rum Creek. Okay, that's right. You grew
- 32:07up in the Logan areas, migrated to chat migrated to the Chapmanville That's right,
- 32:09all right, that's right, and then went to Marshall and then have
- 32:14lived in the Kenau Valley for ever since, ever since I went to Marshall,
- 32:19and I've made my way down to the Hurricane area Tays Valley. Live
- 32:23in Putnham County where I work at the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau,
- 32:29you know, all all week and then have a have a side job Old
- 32:32Try where we do letter press prints and art prints and and some T shirts
- 32:37and stuff out of the house. So that's my evenings and weekend fun time
- 32:42because you have so much free time, if you like I did, it's
- 32:45much free time. So you are the executive director of the Putnam County Convention
- 32:49at Visitor Bureau. We've had your counterpart here in Charleston, Tom Brady,
- 32:52on the show many times. But here's here's the dumb question. What exactly
- 32:55does the CVB do? Yeah, So, a Convention and Visitors Bureau markets
- 33:00a destination to places people outside of that destination. So we work to try
- 33:06to get people to visit our area to come in and spend their money in
- 33:10our local businesses, enjoy our local attractions, stay in our local hotels.
- 33:16And so the goal is always to have positive economic impact for our area from
- 33:22folks outside and provide a great experience for those visitors that are coming in,
- 33:27and ultimately to improve the quality of life for everyone who lives in our communities.
- 33:32And I would think, I want to get in this a little bit
- 33:35later on. I'm kind of jumping ahead of myself here, but I would
- 33:37think that there are a lot of maybe misconceptions about Pundham County and uh,
- 33:45and it's I've been told, you know, it's it's a place where I've
- 33:46I've lived for nine years now. But people say, well, it's a
- 33:50bedroom community, you know. It just it's somewhere between Huntington and Charleston,
- 33:53because you know have and I get on the interstate every morning a little bit
- 33:57after seven and I watch, you know, a lot of the I'm one
- 33:59of the ones drive to Charleston and the other half the people are all driving
- 34:00to Huntington. But there is a lot going on though in Putnam County,
- 34:05especially as it comes to recreation and fun things to do. Talk about that,
- 34:09well, I do think that people off I think anywhere you live,
- 34:14people saying there's nothing to do here, I mean it's that's a common refrain
- 34:17and Putnham County has a lot to do both events like lots of family fun
- 34:22events. Our library is very, very active with programming. We have great
- 34:28community facilities or parks are wonderful. Valley Park has great trails and sports facilities,
- 34:36Eleanor Park has a wonderful disc golf course and hiking and biking trails.
- 34:40And then Hurricane City Park is adjacent to Meeks Mountain Trails which is a wonderful
- 34:46like thirty mile trail system for hiking and biking. And so there's if you
- 34:52like to enjoy outdoor recreation, it's a great place to go where you're literally
- 34:58just minutes from some really great local food and shops and amenities, and you
- 35:01don't have to travel hours to get somewhere where you can really enjoy the great
- 35:06outdoors. Explain where the funding for cbbs come from. Convention Visitor Bureau cbbs
- 35:12are funded through hotel motel tax that is collected when you go out of town
- 35:16and you stay in a hotel. There's a lodging tax associated with that.
- 35:21And a portion of that tax goes to you either your city or your county,
- 35:25and they can spend that on certain expenses like beautification projects or parks and
- 35:31recreation. And then the other portion of that goes to a convention and visitors
- 35:36bureau to help market that area to increase those those those tourism dollars to bring
- 35:42more people to your area. Okay, indeed, we're talking with Kelly Steele
- 35:45from the Putnam County CVB five eighty Live is brought to you bared by your
- 35:49Hometoil baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. It's a homestayd this weekend for
- 35:52the Birds to go Mark Ballpark. They'll take on High Point six thirty five
- 35:54first pitch tonight and Tomorrow night four oh five Sunday afternoon. Lots going on

- 36:13promotions, Dirty Birds, gears, schedules and more. Visit Dirty Birds baseball
- 36:17dot Com. All right, I'm gonna get a little plug in, Kelly.
- 36:21For the place that you call home, at least as far as your
- 36:22office goes. That's the Putnam CVB, which is located inside Area thirty four,
- 36:28which was an idea that came to, among others, our good friend
- 36:31Putnam County Chamber of Commerce Director Ashley offered glance with this and it's a collaborative
- 36:37co working space is how it got started. It's just off the Day's Valley
- 36:40exit next to the Holiday N and RBS there. This building not only houses
- 36:45the CVB, but also the aforementioned Chamber of Commerce, The Putnam County Development
- 36:50Authority is in there. I think the Solid Waste Authority is in there.
- 36:52And in my opinion, the best coffee shop around in the area, and
- 36:57that is Puttnam Provisions and Drift Coffee is coffee that Connie has there. But
- 37:00a lot of cool gifts that you can't find in stores, a lot of
- 37:04artists and think it's really a cool place that people have never been there.
- 37:07Just stop mind check out Area thirty four. That's right, it's a wonderful
- 37:10place. If you need a coworking space, you can come in and work
- 37:14in the co working room or even rent work pods just for our quiet place
- 37:19to have WiFi and have meetings. You can rent conference rooms. And the
- 37:23thing I love most about Area thirty four is that it is sincerely, like
- 37:29the most positive kind, like just a great, wonderful environment. There.
- 37:36We have the best co workers, not only in the CVB office but in
- 37:39our partner agencies that share the shared office space there. And I love that
- 37:45Putnham Provision provides goods that are made locally that you can come and find locally
- 37:51made goods in a locally owned shop right in the middle of Putnam County.
- 37:53And the next I guess pretty much every Saturday they do the farmers Market,
- 37:58is that in every Saturday thing because Saturday May through October they're having it tomorrow.
- 38:01I saw the little add on social media about that. So it's kind
- 38:05of in the lot just down from Area thirty that's right like two lots over
- 38:08between the Exxon Station and Billy. Sundays there's an open field and that's where
- 38:15the Farmer's Market meets none to one on Saturday mornings May through Octives. See
- 38:17my good buddy, Hoy Hoy flour got got some great items there. I'm
- 38:22kind of a sucker for I mean, people see me and they think,
- 38:24well, there's no way this guy eats healthy. Well, I do eat
- 38:28healthy, uncertain. I love farmers markets and I love you know, fresh
- 38:31fresh maters. You cannot beat summer produce. Yeah, I love it.
- 38:36We have a text here says identify activities of Putnam County specifically specifically for the
- 38:40age group of thirteen to seventeen. What do we got going on to Putnam
- 38:43County for thirteen to seventeen? Lteen to seventeen. So a couple of things
- 38:47that are coming up. One is the Zoology Zone is getting ready to open.
- 38:52So if you have a kid who likes science younger and all the way
- 38:55up through seventeen, if you like reptiles, they have alligators, snakes,
- 39:00lizards, frogs, turtles, like everything, and it's a real hands on
- 39:07experience. And their sneak peak is coming up August eighteen through twentieth, and
- 39:10their grand opening is going to be in the beginning of September. So that's
- 39:14a great kind of all season opportunity. Reads entertainment just open. It's a
- 39:20it's a mini golf course right uh back in Putnham Village and so it's an
- 39:24eighteen whole mini golf course. So that's another fun thing to do now Putnam
- 39:28Village. Just I was talking to somebody by this rola because sometimes people get
- 39:30the different when you take the Tay's Valley. Actually the first one is uh
- 39:35is Liberty Square. That's where targets going in and that's where sports fans is
- 39:38ander. But behind that, that's right, it's fun village. That's Putville,
- 39:44Big lots, Tai Valley Kitchen, a couple other restaurants are back right
- 39:47and and that's where they Yeah, of course is that's right. I think
- 39:52technically I was told to the day the put putt is a trademark thing,
- 39:54so it is so mini golfs, so you can't call it put putt.
- 39:57It's many mini golf, many many golf, something for you and the family
- 40:00to do there, Coop, just don't call it put put because that's that's
- 40:06trademarked. That's right. Disc Off if if you have a kid who likes
- 40:09disc off. There are courses at Valley Park, I think a new one
- 40:13at Hurricane Bridge Park and at Eleanor Park and then there's a brand new skate
- 40:16park at Hurricane City Park and their their celebration, they're kind of kickoff.
- 40:22Celebration is August nineteenth, so it'd be a great time to check that out.
- 40:25But that is a wonderful new facility available and a lot of kids down
- 40:30there. Every evening it is packed at the new skate park there. So
- 40:35there you go. Uh text here, Okay, if my text disappear,
- 40:38text said, is the kid's consignments sales still going on? I think it
- 40:45does still happen, but I don't have a date for when the next one
- 40:47is. Okay, let me see somebody hit send a text. You're totally
- 40:51unrelated to this. We'll do this. We'll go to break. Uh that
- 40:54it was about an event that's going on in Saint Albans. The Plant's Law
- 40:59Office is doing a screening of the movie Sound of Freedom, and that is
- 41:05happening tonight and tomorrow night and it's at the LaBelle Theater in South Charleston.
- 41:08They're doing it's free of charge. So if you get a chance you're looking
- 41:12for something to do, there you go both screening stre at six thirty and
- 41:14that LaBelle Theater. I know it's not Putnam County and we're here talking about
- 41:16Putna LaBelle Theater is awesome place. Yeah, they've done such a great job
- 41:21restoring that. And I went and heard my cousin play some music there,
- 41:25not long ago. Well I guess it wasn't until the age where three years
- 41:30ago. It is not long ago, but but it was beautiful. They've
- 41:34done a great job with that facility. Indeed, they am all right.
- 41:37So we hope you answered that question about what's what is there to do for
- 41:39young people Putnam County And the answer is a ton. That's a lot going
- 41:43on for all ages. It is eleven minutes away from ten to five.

- 44:16If your listeners pay attention, it may be open to value of another
- 44:22may be open to the value of another point of view. Thank you for
- 44:23providing that exact forum to your listeners talking about the debate or discussion whatever it

- 44:32hope you'll keep it civil. That's the plan. If not, I'll bring
- 44:35you in here because I think you'd probably hand on. All right, Kelly,
- 44:37are you ready to play? Ten questions? I'm ready ten totally random
- 44:40questions that you have to answer as quickly as possible. Just blurt out as
- 44:45rapidly as you can altho as listening to home, as we always say,
- 44:49those listening to home in the car, at work, or wherever you are,
- 44:51no wagering. All right, are you ready? I'm ready? All
- 44:54right? Question one? What poster might a teenage Kelly Steel I've had hanging
- 45:00in her bedroom. It was some some riff on like everything you need to
- 45:07know you learned in kindergarten, some happy you know, happy phrases, and
- 45:14just utopian kind of thoughts. Most people would have had a teen heartthrob of
- 45:19the day. But that's okay, that's all right. Although I've never had
- 45:22one, this is you talking. Although I've never had one. I think
- 45:25it may be cool to have a pet. What oh, ferret a ferret?
- 45:32Best concert you ever saw? Oh my gosh, Brandy Carlisle and Marietta
- 45:37like ten years ago. She was incredible. Was before she was a star,
- 45:43before she was big. But yeah, it was a car wonderful show.
- 45:45Brandy Carlisle is awesome. Yeah, your go to hallmade sandwich. Oh,
- 45:51just last night I had some really crunchy toast with smashed avocado, fresh
- 45:55garden tomatoes thanks to a colleague, Julie, and and some you know like
- 46:00everything basil seasoning or bagel bagel. I'm going to now invent everything basil seasoning.
- 46:07That sounds great too. All right. Tell me one celebrity that you
- 46:10have met, How did that media come about? And were they a nice
- 46:15person? I have never met a celebrity I know you're supposed to do the
- 46:20yes, and but like I've literally you, Dave Allen. Oh no,
- 46:23I mean truly, I've never met anyone famous, and all of your travels
- 46:28and you've never met anybody semi famous. No, no musicians, because I
- 46:31know you're a big music person. I am. I mean, here's okay,
- 46:35here's a fun story. Adam Harris, who's you know, friend of
- 46:38the show, not not at all really famous, but in my mind I
- 46:43would go to Mountain Stage and I'd be like, oh my gosh, there's
- 46:45Adam Harris. He's so great. And then I met him in a coffee
- 46:49shop and he knew my name, and I called my friend and I was
- 46:52like, oh my gosh, I just met Adam Harris and he knows who
- 46:54I am. So Adam's probably listening to the show because he listens every day.
- 47:00So Adam, if you're listening, fan club membership one one. I
- 47:04mean, he's now my friend, so it's fine, But at the time
- 47:07it was, it was a big deal. Okay, continuing, I know
- 47:09this. I know this about you because I've known you and your family for
- 47:13a long time. What was the one thing growing up that your brother did
- 47:16to annoy you more than anything else. Your brother John Ryan, Oh my
- 47:21gosh, he would fill his bowl full of cereal like to the brim before
- 47:24he'd put the milk in, and then he would pour the milk in and
- 47:27all the cereal would spill out, and it drove me daddy. Okay,
- 47:32if you order a salad and your favorite salad dressing is not available, what
- 47:37is your backup salad dressing? I don't eat salad dressing, so I do
- 47:42either lemon or lime with salt and pepper, so I never worry about salad
- 47:45dressing. You don't eat salad dressing? No, I don't like the slimy
- 47:49texture on the lettuce promo. Promo? All right, final question? Which
- 47:58are you most afraid of or more bothered by? Spiders, heights, water,
- 48:05or snakes? I'm sweaty just thinking about it. Yeah, another promo,
- 48:10another promo. You have completed ten questions. That wasn't that hard?
- 48:15Was so? Yeah? When it's just a way for us to get to
- 48:20learn more about people. Now next week, my guest to host on Friday
- 48:22is going to be Andy Bernhardt Uh, the anchor person of the w w
- 48:27k TV Morning News. She does a great job with that and actually met
- 48:31Andy came here to the station to cover our sister station ninety eight seven when
- 48:37it was the Mountain when it went on the air, and so I got
- 48:39to meet her then. So she said, I want to do that,
- 48:42So we got Andy. So but she's got some big shoes to fill,
- 48:45especially with that serial story about your brother. Oh he's going to kill me
- 48:50for that. Yeah. Also, real quick, I do want to say
- 48:52thanks to everybody who came out last night. We did to paint the Capital
- 48:55City green. Event last night up at the bill No Flight School, marsh
- 49:00University, the Charleston Quarterback Club sponsored that last night. I mean we had
- 49:04three four hundred people or so up there. It was packed. That's all
- 49:07the photo and I love seeing all that that sea of green. It was
- 49:08a sea of green last night as Marshall took over the Capitol City. Like
- 49:13you know what, this is a marshalltown. That's right. I just love
- 49:15saying things like that, it's a marshalltown. But no, it was.
- 49:19It was a big event there last night, and the coaches were there and
- 49:21everybody had a great, great time, and so hats off to everybody that
- 49:23were able to pull it off myself and Steve Animal or a good friend from
- 49:27our sister station. They're served as the MC's last night, it was a
- 49:30it was a capacity crowd. And I will say this, if you've never
- 49:34had an opportunity to go up to the airport to the bill No Flight School
- 49:37from Marshall University. They're doing some fantastic things over there. A matter of
- 49:40fact, good friend from my hometown told me his son is in like the
- 49:44second or third year of the program up there to become a pilot. Awesome,
- 49:46it's really good stuff. So what else you got going on upcoming with
- 49:52the CVB, Well, this Saturday is Hurricane Citywide yard Sale, so if
- 49:55you're a yard sailor, that's a big deal. And then the West Virginia
- 50:00Cupcake Festival August twenty four through twenty sixth, and then on September ninth that's
- 50:04Putnam County Homecoming and the Hurricane hundred K. So if you're a very long
- 50:07distance runner, it's a great chance. You want to know what ten questions
- 50:10went? So fast? Why I left two questions off? Oh my gosh,
- 50:15what you got? Because I actually do write this stuff out and all
- 50:19right, so we'recome back to ten questions. That's why it went so fast
- 50:22because I left two questions off other than this show or the station, shameless
- 50:25plug for that, where's your go to place for news honest w V Metro
- 50:32News dot com? I said, other than this well x X Okay,
- 50:39if okay, this is the final question and the two partner that we did.
- 50:43If you're doing karaoke, what's your go to? Okay? So I've
- 50:45only karaoke like one time ever in my life. But my favorite song to
- 50:50sing, you know, loud in my car is Valerie. Like Amy Winehouse's
- 50:53version of Valerie. It's a great that's the Steve Winwood song Valerie. No
- 50:58No, no different Valerie. Okay, both are great songs. Okay,
- 51:00I'm not familiar with that. I'll send it to you later. Okay,
- 51:04all right, Kelly Steele, I appreciate you being here. Thanks a lot.
