  get right into it. Monet Sankwa was the second kid

  in a seriously wealthy and very eccentric family.

  Her father, Cartier Sankwa, was an ambassador and former
• 0:51
  corporate big shot. Her mother, Jamila, came from
• 0:54
  royalty. Monet was born in Bosnia and
• 0:58
  grew up with her older brother Marius and her younger twin

  sisters, Claudette and Nicole. Out of all of them, she was
• 1:05
  definitely her dad's favorite. Everything fell apart when
• 1:08
  Marius's mutant powers kicked in.

  He developed a horrifying hunger for mutant genetic marrow and

  ended up killing their mother. Cartier disowned him and Marius
• 1:18
  vanished into another dimension, getting stronger and stronger

  over time. When he eventually came back, he
• 1:25
  invited Monet to join him in conquering dimensions.

  She flat out rejected him. Angry and fed up with her
• 1:32
  attitude, Marius magically transformed her into a mute,
• 1:35
  razor sharp red skinned creature called Penance.

  Which I think that's just a little excessive.

  I mean, but I wasn't there. Claudette and Nicole walked in
• 1:47
  just after Monet disappeared and assumed Marius had killed her.

  Claudette opened a portal and banished him, but before he was
• 1:55
  dragged away, Marius told Penance only he could restore
• 1:58
  her. Monet jumped in after him and
• 2:01
  ended up enslaved. As Penance.

  She was forced to let her brother feed on her repeatedly
• 2:07
  to satisfy his horrifying hunger.

  The trauma ran very, very deep, leaving emotional scars that

  would haunt her a long after she was freed.

  Meanwhile, the twins, knowing Monet, who had always been their

  father's favorite, used their powers to merge into one body

  that looked exactly like her. The new Monet had her parents

  personality and powers. The only glitch was Audette's
• 2:32
  autism, which sometimes caused the merger form to slip in a
• 2:35
  catatonic state. Not long after the teen mutant
• 2:39
  team Generation X formed, Penance was dropped at the
• 2:42
  Massachusetts Academy by Gateway Headmaster Banshee and Emma

  Frost tried to figure out who or what she was.

  The merged Monet the secretly the twins suggested Pennants
• 2:54
  might be a prisoner of Mplit, the new name Marius had taken,

  pretending it was just a logical guess.

  Pennants eventually escaped the Infirmary in full survival mode,

  tearing through a wall. The team chased her down and

  after fighting most of them, she connected with Chamber who
• 3:12
  related to her physical trauma. He managed to calm her and she
• 3:16
  stayed. Over time, she slowly bonded
• 3:19
  with the group, especially Jubilee, and started going on
• 3:22
  missions. Eventually, the truth came out.

  Monet was really Claudette and Nicole combined and Penance was
• 3:29
  the real Monet. To fix things, the twins split,
• 3:32
  merged again into Monet's body and swapped places with her,
• 3:36
  freeing the real Monet. At last, the twins took over as
• 3:39
  Penance, and Monet kept using the code name M on the team.

  Monet's powers were intense flight, super strength,
• 3:48
  telepathy, insane reflexes, you name it, she's got it.

  She also had a huge attitude and did not hesitate to show it.

  She classed with teammates constantly, especially Jubilee,

  who joked that Monet's real power was just being perfect.

  Even after everything she'd been through, Monet leaned into that
• 4:09
  icy, superior persona. It was her armor underneath it.

  Though she was deeply scarred from her brother's abuse.

  The only teammate she really let her guard downward with was
• 4:21
  Sink, and they had a brief romance When he died, stopping a
• 4:25
  bomb planted by Emma Frost's sister, Adrian Monet was

  devastated. The team eventually fell apart,

  and though she claims she was going home, she instead joined
• 4:36
  Banshee's new group, Ex Corpse, to keep an eye on him.

  That team did not last long. She later worked with the X
• 4:43
  Corporation in Europe and helped the X-Men handle threats like

  Black Tom, Cassidy and the Juggernaut.

  After M Day, she joined X Factor Investigations, a detective

  agency ran by Jamie Madrix, who is multiple man.

  There, she showed off her telepathy by tricking an actor

  into confessing to murder. She even broke down emotionally

  afterward, but immediately threatened Jamie if he ever
• 5:08
  mentioned it. Because remember that icy
• 5:10
  persona? That's her armor.

  She had a messy fling with Madrix, bonded deeply with
• 5:17
  Teresa, who is Siren, and stood by her through a brutal
• 5:22
  pregnancy loss. Monet also faced her father's
• 5:25
  kidnapping, tangled with Baron Mordo who tried to siphon her
• 5:30
  life force to cure his cancer, and endured the death and later
• 5:34
  soulless resurrection of Strong Guy, who had fallen madly for
• 5:38
  her. Things got darker when her
• 5:41
  brother Emplate merged with her again, cursing her with his
• 5:45
  hunger. Under his influence, she became
• 5:48
  more ruthless, even killing in humans during a mutant conflict.

  Sabertooth stuck by her and tried to help her manage the
• 5:54
  curse. Eventually, the younger X-Men
• 5:57
  found a way to break Implants hold and forcing him back into
• 6:01
  his own dimension. She later joined Kirkoa, the
• 6:04
  mutant nation founded by Xavier and Magneto, and went on a near
• 6:08
  suicide mission to destroy Mother Mold before Nimrod could
• 6:11
  be created. The mission was successful, but
• 6:14
  the whole team, including Monet, was killed.

  Thankfully, the Five resurrected them, restoring Monet
• 6:21
  completely. After that, she helped lead the
• 6:24
  revamped X Corp alongside Angel, worked on Mutantec initiatives,
• 6:29
  and continued stepping up as one of Kirko's major players through
• 6:33
  it all. Dimension hopping, abuse,
• 6:35
  identity swaps, death, resurrection, mind control,
• 6:39
  cursed hunger, and way too much emotional damage.

  Monet stayed sharp, powerful and unapologetically herself.
• 6:47
  The attitude that's still there, but it's now backed by survival.

  So that is Monet St. Quoi.

  She is a very sad character, which I realize that that's what
• 6:59
  I've been reporting on a lot lately.

  she's a cool character. It's very tragic back story, but

  she's but cool character. She's pretty powerful.
