After 82 years lost in Papua New Guinea’s jungles, a wingtip from Major Richard Bong’s legendary P-38 Lightning, “Marge,” has finally returned home to Poplar, Wisconsin. The recovery involved complex negotiations with local landowners, the national museum, and government agencies — and even a community goodwill exchange that included installing a water pipe and classroom supplies for a local school.
