- 3:47shortcuts to new home beauty. And now for today's exciting case from the life
- 3:58of Nick Carter. It's quiet in the old Victorian mansion on the corner of
- 4:01fifth and fourth. Nick Carter is working on some intricate Analin die tests.
- 4:05Patsy is transcribing notes. A long, calm afternoon of intensive work is ahead.
- 4:12Suddenly the telephone rings. Nick Carter's, Patsy's Nick clearant rally, you
- 4:18sound excited? Anything wrong? Lindy's wrong? It be touching, Nick,
- 4:23how, Hold of a second, what's brother Riley today? He won't tell
- 4:26me here? Thanks, ah, Riley? What's on him? You've got
- 4:29to hush her down to my office on why I got the cases will blow
- 4:32on the top off the city if it breaks. She has got to be
- 4:34checked. What's behind it. Do you ever hear of World Research who hasn't
- 4:38rally the biggest industrial chemists and research labs in the country. Well, there's
- 4:42a guy down here named Bigger. He's accusing him of murder. Ohse murder.
- 4:45You will find out when you pit here. Come on, ose murder.
- 4:47Riley his old murder. This guy Bigger here is claiming he's dead already.
- 5:02Nick, This here is mister Baker, Mister Baker, Nick Cutton.
- 5:06I want him to hear your story. Go ahead, mister Baker. How
- 5:10has World Research murdered you? Already? As I stand before you? And
- 5:14now, mister Carter, I'm a dead man. She'll be buried in a
- 5:15very few days. Go on. I'm an inventor, miss to Carter,
- 5:19not by profession but by hobby. During the day, I'm a broker.
- 5:23Evenings, I work in my laboratory. I've been doing research with a friend
- 5:26of mine named John Drey. You can check that. Get on with your
- 5:29storry, man. I want you to check it to prove I'm not crazy.
- 5:32Welldrey and I have perfected a new radio development that will revolutionize the industry,
- 5:36been patented. You can check that too. We will decide what to
- 5:40check, mister Baker. Go ahead. World Research has been after us for
- 5:43weeks to sell out to them. We refused. Apparently they were desperate.
- 5:46Today I found this piece of apparatus connected inside one of my experimental machines.
- 5:50To look at it. What a messy wires and tubes that he is.
- 5:56Was brought into my laboratory by World Research. It's a gamma ray projector tremendous
- 6:00power. All the while my experimental radio has been operating, this little horror
- 6:03has been projecting gamma rays until my body is saturated with them. I can't
- 6:08live. Gentlemen, World Research has murdered me. What do you want us
- 6:11to do? Check my story from beginning to end. Then let me come
- 6:15down here and begin action against World Research. If I'm going to die,
- 6:17mister Carter, I want my revenge before I'm in the great Mister Baker,
- 6:21you're talking like an idiot. Night it's a Baker were donnoth Riley and I'll
- 6:27give this case I most careful attention. You ask for a vengeance, I
- 6:31premise to this, you will get it if you deserve it. Well,
- 6:49Nick, I'm finished, Pantcy. Is this apparatus? Baker brought in really
- 6:54deadly. No, you mean he lied. I'm not sure. All I
- 6:59do know is that this so called gamma ray projectors' just a mess of tubes
- 7:02and wires. It doesn't make sense. Then the whole case doesn't make sense.
- 7:06And why did Baker come in with that tall story? Yes, possible,
- 7:12Old world research may be trying to buy him out. White claim murder
- 7:15such an odd, impossible murder. Maybe he's whacky, Nick, I hear
- 7:20most inventors are. Maybe. Well, there's one way to find out.
- 7:25Get the car, Pascy. We're going to visit mister Baker in his laboratory.
- 7:44Nick, come out of breath. How much higher? One flight?
- 7:46The jennifer said, Baker's labs on the top floor. I hope I can
- 7:49make it, take my arm. How you're sure Baker's in, as the
- 7:55janitor said, so, and maybe we are. That's pretty quiet in there.
- 8:05Maybe he went out. Wait a minute, that's joys open. Let's
- 8:16go in. Gosh, what I missed this place is I thought all lambs
- 8:20were neat like yours, Nick, and there really efficient ones. Doesn't seem
- 8:26to be anybody here. I can't understand it. Lights on the door on
- 8:30the locked Nick behind that table on the floor. Look, oh, oh
- 8:37Baker? All right he did, isn't he? Yes? Then he was
- 8:41right about those gamma raising things. This time, no one bothered with science.
- 8:46Someone simply got to be evolved. Very aimed at mister Baker and shut
- 8:50him to death. I got over here as fast as I could, Nick.
- 9:05If this ain't this crueut case, I ever came acros looked the body
- 9:09over Riley, I've already made a preliminary inspection. He was shot at close
- 9:13rand with a twenty five caliber gun Colt automatic, one of those ladies size
- 9:18pocketbook automatics. Then, yes, who come here so sure? Nick?
- 9:20Because I found the ejected shell right here? See? Well, what is
- 9:26it, Nick, something I hadn't noticed before? Look there under the body
- 9:31and just see the edge of the handle, Colory b Is watch out for
- 9:35prints on it? Oh, Nick, I no better than that as usual,
- 9:41mister Carter, who's the twenty five automatic? You have a look at
- 9:43a rally, Nick. Maybe mister Baker shot himself. Maybe he was so
- 9:48desperate about those gamma rays and stuff. Actually he didn't commit suicide, he
- 9:52was murdered. Who come here so sure, Nick, Patsy could be right.
- 9:54You know, look the gun over by reflected light, got a print
- 9:58on it? How goot a man ca himself and then wipe his prints off
- 10:01the gun? Obviously someone held this gun with a handkerchief or glove kill.
- 10:05Baker dropped the gun and left question number one. I'd also like to know
- 10:11how valuable his invention really is and who profits by his death. Where are
- 10:15you going to start to get the answers? We'll try John Dray, Baker's
- 10:18partner first. Maybe mister Dre's an authority and murder. It's true, mister
- 10:37Cutter. How radio development is potentially worth a fortune. It's new and tremendously
- 10:41important. Look over the patent yourself. We registered it jointly, mister Dre.
- 10:46If you were partners, how is it you and Baker worked in separate
- 10:50labs Research was only a hobby with Baker. He had a regular brokerage business
- 10:54outside. He wanted a place where he could work now and then three four
- 10:58hours a day. Exactly how much did World Research offer you to sell out
- 11:03quarter of a million? And you refused, mister Dress, Not exactly.
- 11:07We made a counter offer. And now that Baker's dead and the patent's all
- 11:11yours. You're waiting for the answer. I certainly not. I told you
- 11:15we registered the patent jointly. I can't touch Baker's share. Can you tell
- 11:18me who does inherit Baker's share? His sister? I believe Julia Baker.
- 11:22She lives with him. Over again, I know the address. Thanks a
- 11:26lot, mister dre Oh. By the way, eh, what are it
- 11:30possible to develop an electrical gamma ray projector what nonsense? I thought you were
- 11:35as scientist? Mister Carter, you know gamma rays can only be produced by
- 11:39radioactive elements. Yes, I know it. I'm just wondering if Baker knew,
- 11:43I'd know it. Come on, Patsy, let's pay a visit to
- 11:46Baker's there. Yes, I suppose it's true. I inherit Ben's share in
- 12:05the invention, mister Carter, I never thought about it much, Miss Baker.
- 12:09Tell me, do you know if there's a copy of the patent here?
- 12:13I don't know. I think it's with Ben's attorney, that's Roland York
- 12:16at Maiden Lane. W is your brother working on it very long? For
- 12:22years? It seems I don't know where he found the time. I hardly
- 12:26ever saw him outside of Sundays. He spent Sunday with me. He worked
- 12:30very hard at the brokerage, ten hours a day. What did he do?
- 12:33He was the statistical expert. No time all, hardly any must have
- 12:37been pretty lonesome here for you. It was even at night when he came
- 12:41home from work. He couldn't spend much time with me. He was so
- 12:45tired. He'd just have dinner and then go to bed. What were his
- 12:50ours at the brokerage office, Miss Barrett. He worked from nine in the
- 12:52morning and till nine at night, usually pretty stiff hours. What time did
- 12:58you have dinner at home? Around nine thirty and then your brother went to
- 13:01bed, Yes, around eleven. I see, I I can't understand who'd
- 13:09want to murder my brother, mister Carter. He was a good man,
- 13:13was friendly, was interested in everybody. He oh for Heaven's sake, mister
- 13:18Carter, who killed him? I don't know yet, Miss Baker. Frankly,
- 13:24at the moment, I'm much more interested in another problem. Why I
- 13:28don't understand mister Carter. Come along, Bessie, I want to have a
- 13:31talk with the janiture of the building where Baker's lab is located. Nectar's this
- 13:50fantastic problem that bothering you have anything to do with Baker's murder? Maybe the
- 13:54crux of the murder, I mean, the answer to why Baker lied about
- 13:58that Gamma ray Projector No, then I don't get it. Here's the building,
- 14:05all right? Come on, okay, here's the janitor's door. Yes,
- 14:18you remember me, Nick Carter working on the Baker case. Oh sure,
- 14:22come on in, mister Carter. It's awful hot here out on the
- 14:26sidewalk. No, I've only come to ask you one question. Oh here,
- 14:30go ahead. When did mister Baker usually work in his laboratory? Why?
- 14:33Every day? You're sure? Aye? Sure? He worked here every
- 14:37day Monday through Saturday. He come morning, sometime sometime afternoon, sometimes evenings.
- 14:46But I see him come in here every day except Sandy. He always
- 14:50make it the point to say hello to me when he comes in and goes
- 14:54out. How long did he usually work? In? Four hour stretches credive
- 15:01four hours a day, six days a week, makes twenty four hours one
- 15:05whole day? Warm blazers? Did he get that extra day? Nick?
- 15:09What on earth are you talking about? Don't you see Betsy Ben Baker.
- 15:13Somebody shot at us from across the street. That's how the flashes thrown the
- 15:16janitor. He's been shot. Help me get him inside, Patsy quick,
- 15:20all right? Is he hurt badly? Patsy? This man is dead.
- 15:33What is this mysterious question that's bewildering Nick? Why was the janitor in ben
- 15:37Baker's lab building murdered? We'll see you in just a moment. All of
- 15:41us learn best by doing. That's why American homemakers who have used Linax self

- 16:53for all three great Linax home brightness to give your home new beauty the easy
- 17:00way. And now back to our story. The strange murder of Ben Baker
- 17:11Broker, an amateur inventor, has faced Nick caught her with many peculiar problems.
- 17:15Why did Baker lie about his impending death? How important was his invention?
- 17:19Who would profit by his death? As Nick uncovers an even more fantastic
- 17:23problem, Baker's janitor is shot to death. Now we find Nick, Patsy
- 17:27and Lieutenant Riley at the scene of the second murder. Nickay, I'm really
- 17:32lost. They can't make hither tail of this mess. Can't you give us
- 17:34any idea of what's going on? Nick? Why was Baker's janitor killed?
- 17:38Probably because he knew some vital clue to the identity of the murderer. What's
- 17:44this big question? You see his button? Riley? How can a man
- 17:47live eight days in one week? Oh, that's silly, Nick, There's
- 17:52only seven days in anybody's week. Nevertheless, Ben Baker lived eight days in
- 17:56a week. I don't understand, nick O. Listen. They worked twelve
- 18:00hours a day in the brokerage house, including an hour off for lunch.
- 18:03He left his house at eight in the morning for work, maybe turned at
- 18:07nine forty five or so for dinner. After dinner he went to bed.
- 18:11I've checked all those times and they're all verified. Which he counts for twenty
- 18:15four hours. Right. According to the janitor's testimony, he worked at least
- 18:18four hours a day, six days a week in his lab. That's an
- 18:22extra twenty four hours, an extra day. I wor did Baker get that
- 18:26eighth day in his week? Gosh, don't make sense. You're telling me
- 18:30what in the jumping blue places is going on around here? A guy comes
- 18:33around and says he's been murdered and he ate. When you check his toney,
- 18:37you find all of a suddenly he is then the killer out's offer Janitor
- 18:41after he's already given his evidence. Then we find the only one who profits
- 18:44by Baker's death is his sister, who's a frightened girl that looks as though
- 18:48she wouldn't hurt a fly. Wait a minute, Baker was knocked off with
- 18:51a twenty five automatic gets a woman's gun. But Baker accused World research.
- 18:56What have we gotta do about it? You get a search, want riling
- 18:59us at the office of Baker's attorney, Roland York. I want to get
- 19:03a look at that patent. Okay, Nick, been all through the files,
- 19:21and here's everything there is on that invention. Oh gosh, what a
- 19:23mess of documents. Though it's as much trouble patenting an invention as it is
- 19:27making one. Yes, really anything forty about this stuff? Strangely enough,
- 19:36no, Apparently Baker and Drey have worked out quite a brilliant improvement on radio
- 19:41television transmission. It's not epoch making, but it's sort of thing that can
- 19:47cut costs of transmission. M patent seems to be legitimate, made out by
- 19:56Baker and Dray jointly. That's what Dray said. Here's something Baker's share goes
- 20:02to his sister when he dies, and that's what she said. But here's
- 20:07something no one mentioned. Who was that if Baker and Drey both die before
- 20:12commercial exploitation of the idea begins, Roland York the Attorney acquires all commercial rights,
- 20:19subject to the obligation to pay both theirs their fair share. Are you
- 20:22thinking what I'm thinking, Patty? I know what you're both thinking. That
- 20:26maybe John Drey's the next man's schedule to die. That may be true,
- 20:30So let's get busy, all right? What do we do rob against the
- 20:33shrewd killer? And we don't know exactly what he's after, although I have
- 20:37a hunch if we knew where Ben Baker got his extra day, we'd be
- 20:40a lot closer to the solution. Raley, get hold of Roland Yorke,
- 20:44call him for questioning as tactfully as you can. Right, Nick, Patsy,
- 20:48you and I are going places where to John Drey's laboratory to protect you.
- 20:51Maybe also maybe to find Ben Baker's extra day raised place up ahead asy
- 21:11last or hell lights gosh, maybe Dray's been killed already. You're remembering the
- 21:17way we found Baker. All right, let's go in. Oh's that?
- 21:22Oh sorry, mister Dray. You startled me. But who are you?
- 21:29Oh? Let me introduce myself, mister Dray. My name is Kent.
- 21:32I'm from World Research. What are you doing here? Why? I well,
- 21:37I was sent over to express our deep sympathy for your recent bereavement.
- 21:42So and also you understand how embarrassing it is to talk business at such a
- 21:49time. Go on, well, and also to say that your counterproposal is
- 21:55really much too high. You'll think chan you must reconsider, mister Dre.
- 22:00Now that Baker is dead, I don't understand Baker was the one who was
- 22:04holding out for the high price. Wasn't think what mister Dre. Now that
- 22:07Baker's out of the way, you brazen ly come here hoping you can persuade
- 22:11me to accept a smaller figure. I assure you, Nick, I just
- 22:15realized maybe it isn't Roland joke. Maybe Baker told the truth about World Research.
- 22:18Maybe the pattern does threaten their business. Why maybe they did I hear
- 22:22you call this man? Nick? I had assumed I was speaking to mister
- 22:25John Dre Do you mean to tell me that I what's the meaning of this?
- 22:29What are you people doing in my land investigating murder? Mister dra So,
- 22:33I was right. You are an impostor. This is outrageous. How
- 22:36is there? Carter? Will you have the goodness to explain what's going on
- 22:38here? It's really quite simple, mister Dray. We came here to throw
- 22:42a little light on the murder mystery. Yes, say that again, Say
- 22:48what really, Carter? This is ridiculous. Repeat what you said, Patsy,
- 22:52I said, we came to mister Drey's laboratory to throw a little light
- 22:56on the murder. That's it. Light light in the laboratory. And that's
- 22:59the explanation. The explanation of course, Ben Baker's extra day, I think
- 23:03I know where he got it. Come on, where to Let's go have
- 23:04a look at Baker's electric meter. What's an electric meter got to do with
- 23:19an extra day? It'll show where it went. Yeah, through this door
- 23:25down to the cellar. Watch your step, pretty dark, I've got a
- 23:30flash. Gosh, the tellers in these old loft buildings are creepy, like
- 23:34catacombs. Yes, it's so deep. These stairs go down forever we won't
- 23:40be long. Flash a light around with your Nick, afraid only a mice?
- 23:45Careful? Here's the bottom going trip or it's pretty broken up? Now?
- 23:51Where are the meters? Oh? There they are, Nick, over
- 23:53there against the far wall, behind that pile of barrels. All right,
- 23:56come on, who's the killer? Nick? Do you know? Not for
- 24:00sure yet? And I've got a pretty good idea. Maybe Julia Baker isn't,
- 24:04as we can, helpless as she seems. Maybe maybe I was right
- 24:07about world research. Maybe maybe Roland Joe got ambitious. Maybe can't you say
- 24:12anything? But maybe here's the meters les see first? Second? Oh,
- 24:19the top floor offices Baker's was six hours There it is on the right,
- 24:26Yes, and there I hope is a solution to the case. Where on
- 24:30the dials read off the killer white eyes? Why? Nick? Because when
- 24:33we compare the meter reading now with the reading a month ago, we'll find
- 24:37that very little electricity has been used. Nick, I can't follow you.
- 24:41What is that the killer? Nick? We're trapped? No, Patsy,
- 24:47not quite. Then I'm come a little closer when I give the word,
- 24:49help me push these barrels over? All right? No, Petsy, Nick,
- 25:00all right, we can come out now. Our friends been not cold.
- 25:03We'll find him under a couple of crates. Who is it, Nick?
- 25:07Put your light on quickly. In a second, I'll be happy to
- 25:10illuminate the very unattractive face of your murderer. There you are, Gee,
- 25:15Nick, That yes, mister John Dre. In just a moment, Nick
- 25:29will return to give you the final details of today's story and explain why John
- 25:33Dre killed the man who lived too long. The best way to keep up
- 25:37the appearance of the things you own is to protect them. And the finest
- 25:41protective finish you can find for dozens of household uses is LINEX Clear Gloss,

- 26:45like magic. Its beautiful colors will lighten and brighten your home at an average
- 26:51cost of just two ninety eight room ask for Kemtne, which covers in one
- 26:56coat, dries in one hour. And now let's hear from Nick Carter himself.
- 27:08Nick, where did Baker get that extra day? He didn't can That's
- 27:11the point of the whole case. Baker never spent any time at all in
- 27:15that lab. If he had worked there experimenting, his meter would have registered
- 27:19many hours of electricity. But as it was, the meter showed almost no
- 27:25electricity used at all. But Nick, the janitor said he was there,
- 27:27which is why the janitor was killed. John Drey rented the lab in Baker's
- 27:33name, then he killed the janitor to keep him from telling me that the
- 27:37man found dead in the lab Baker wasn't the man who said hello to him
- 27:41as he went in and out. But why was that necessary? Nick?
- 27:44Baker and Dray made the mistake of patenting their invention jointly. Now, the
- 27:48patent law is very strict on one point. It provides that only the actual
- 27:52inventor is permitted to take out the patent. If any other name appears on
- 27:56the patent, it's thereby automatically voge oh I see. So word research could
- 28:02have broken the patent if they found out that Baker was not an invented but
- 28:06merely Drey's financial backer, right Patsy. And rather than take that chance,
- 28:10Drey tried to set up a false identity for Baker. He told Baker to
- 28:14go to the police with his story about being murdered, hoping that when the
- 28:18police checked up on him, they'd believe that Baker actually was a practicing scientist.
- 28:22Well, then why did he kill Baker? After all? Drey was
- 28:25afraid someone might cross examine Baker and get the truth. We killed Baker to
- 28:30keep the secret secure. Well, Nick, how about a little preview of
- 28:33next week's story. On next weekend, Patsy and I are called to the
- 28:36home of the foremost amateur art collector in the country to find out why one
- 28:38of his portraits has suddenly started squinting. Did you say squinting? He did,
- 28:45and he wouldn't have been able to break the case if he hadn't taken
- 28:48the fingerprints of a man who died two hundred years ago. Fingerprints two hundred
- 28:52years old and squinting portraits. For the love of Pete Nick. What do
- 28:56you call this case? I call it the case of the near cited picture.

- 31:26Well, this was actually a pretty clever mystery. I like the concept of
- 31:30the extra day, and I was somewhat baffled by the motive for murder of
- 31:38having filled out a patent application incorrectly and that being the only remedy. But
- 31:48other than that solid episode, by the way, the four episodes that we
- 31:53missed were Short Range Death, Murder in CEL seventeen, the corpse accuses and
- 32:00D is for death, and we'll have another couple lost episodes before we get
- 32:07to next week's show that will actually do it for today. We will be
- 32:13back tomorrow with yours truly, Johnny Doller, and then be sure and listen
- 32:19to us next Thursday for another episode of Nick Carter Master Detective. In the
