- 0:23You are listening to me on. Thank you for inviting me into
- 0:26your day so that we can continue this Holy Week.
- 0:30Week journey toward the cross today we continue to read about
- 0:36Jesus last week as he walked those streets of Jerusalem
- 0:41surrounded by people who would do him harm and those who loved
- 0:45him. So we just sit at Jesus feet.
- 0:49We hear his words and we let them wash over us and transform
- 0:54us. So join me friends, as we read
- 0:57together today, Luke chapter 20 One day is Jesus was teaching
- 1:13the people and preaching, the Good News in the temple, the
- 1:16leading priests, the teachers of religious law and the elders
- 1:19came up to him, they demanded by what Authority.
- 1:24Are you doing all these things? Who gave you the right?
- 1:28Let me ask you a question first. He replied did John's authority
- 1:33to baptize come from heaven, or was it merely human?
- 1:37They talked it over among themselves.
- 1:40If we say it was from Heaven, he will ask why we didn't believe
- 1:44John. But if we say it was merely
- 1:46human, the people will Stone us because they are convinced.
- 1:50John was a prophet, so they're finally replied that they didn't
- 1:54know. And Jesus responded, then I
- 1:57won't tell you by what Authority, I do these things.
- 2:02Now, Jesus turned to the people again and told them this story.
- 2:06A man planted a Vineyard leased, it to tenant farmers and moved
- 2:10to another country to live for several years.
- 2:13At the time of the grape Harvest, he sent one of his
- 2:16servants to collect his share of the crop, but the farmers
- 2:19attacked. The servant beat him up, and
- 2:22send him back empty-handed. So the owner sent another
- 2:25servant, but they also insulted him beat him up and send him
- 2:29away. Empty handed.
- 2:31The third man was sent and they wounded him and chased him away.
- 2:36What will I do? The owner asked himself?
- 2:39I know, I'll send my cherished son.
- 2:42Surely, they will respect him, but when the tenant Farmers, saw
- 2:46his son, they said to each other.
- 2:48Here comes the heir to the estate.
- 2:51Let's kill him, and get the estate for ourselves.
- 2:54So they dragged him out of the vineyard.
- 2:57And murdered him. What do you suppose?
- 3:00The owner of the vineyard will do to them?
- 3:02Jesus asked, I'll tell you, he will come and kill those farmers
- 3:08and least the vineyard to others.
- 3:11How terrible that such a thing should ever happened?
- 3:13His listeners protested. Jesus looked at them and said,
- 3:18then, what does this scripture mean?
- 3:20The stone that the builders rejected has become the
- 3:23Cornerstone everyone who stumbles over that stone will be
- 3:28broken to pieces and it will crush anyone at Falls on The
- 3:33teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to
- 3:36arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the
- 3:40story against them, they were the wicked Farmers, but they
- 3:45were afraid of the people's reaction watching for their
- 3:48opportunity, the leader sent spies pretending to be honest.
- 3:52Men, that tried to get Jesus to say something that could be
- 3:55reported to the Roman Governor. So he would arrest Jesus
- 3:58teacher. They said we know that you speak
- 4:02and teach Teach what is right and are not influenced by what
- 4:06others think you teach the way of God, truthfully.
- 4:10Now tell us, is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?
- 4:17He saw through their trickery and said, show me a Roman coin,
- 4:22whose picture entitle a stamped on it Caesars.
- 4:26They replied. Well, then he said, give to
- 4:30Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to
- 4:34God. So they fail to trap him by what
- 4:37he said in front of the people. Instead they were Amazed by his
- 4:42answer and they became silent. When Jesus was approached by
- 4:47some Sadducees, religious leaders, who say there is no
- 4:50Resurrection from the dead, they posed.
- 4:53This question teacher Moses gave us a law that if a man dies
- 4:58leaving a wife but no children. His brother should marry the
- 5:02Widow and have a child who will carry on the brother's name.
- 5:06Well, Suppose there were seven brothers, the oldest one married
- 5:10and then died without children. So the second brother married
- 5:13the Widow but he also I died. Then the third brother married
- 5:16her this continued with all seven of them who died without
- 5:20children. Finally the woman also died.
- 5:24So, tell us whose wife will she be in the resurrection for all
- 5:28seven were married to her? Jesus replied marriage is for
- 5:33people here on Earth, but in the age to come those worthy of
- 5:38being raised from the dead will neither marry nor are given in
- 5:41marriage and they will never die.
- 5:43Again. In this respect, they will be
- 5:46like Angels, they are children of God and Children of the
- 5:50Resurrection, but now as to whether the dead will be raised
- 5:55even Moses. Proved this, when he wrote about
- 5:58the burning bush long after Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had
- 6:02died. He referred to the Lord, as the
- 6:06god of Abraham, the god of Isaac, and the god of Jacob.
- 6:11So he is the god of the living, not the dead for, they are all
- 6:17alive to him. Well, said teacher remark, some
- 6:22of the teachers of religious law, who were standing there and
- 6:25then no one dared to ask him any more questions.
- 6:30Then Jesus presented them with the question.
- 6:33Why is it? He asked that the Messiah is
- 6:36said to be the son of David, but David himself wrote In the book
- 6:40of Psalms. The Lord said to my Lord sit at
- 6:45the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your
- 6:49enemies, making them a foot stool under your feet since
- 6:52David called the Messiah Lord. How can the Messiah be his son?
- 6:58Then for the crowds listening he turned to his disciples and said
- 7:03be aware of these teachers of religious law for they like to
- 7:07parade around in flowing robes and love to recite respectful
- 7:11greetings as they walk in the marketplaces and how they love
- 7:15the seats of Honor in the synagogues.
- 7:17And the head table at Banquets yet they shamelessly cheat
- 7:22widows out of their property and then pretend to be Pious by
- 7:26making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be
- 7:31severely punished. Jesus.
- 7:44You are so wise, we get all confused and muddled and
- 7:50conflicted but to you Everything is filled with such clarity.
- 7:56Thank you for these stories that are captured by Luke.
- 8:01Thank you for these discourses that you had with those people.
- 8:06Indeed, help us to give to Caesar what is Caesar's and give
- 8:11to you. What is yours?
- 8:14Help us to know where to place our emphasis in our life as all
- 8:20these priorities shouted us for our attention.
- 8:23Everyday, help us to give priority to you and to your
- 8:29kingdom and your ways. So that your life can be shared
- 8:35so brightly in our lives. We love you.
- 8:39And we are so grateful for you and all that you have done for
- 8:43us and send your name that we pray.
- 8:47Amen.
