- 0:04Speaker 1: and two time People's Choice Award winning podcast.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Hello everybody, we are scrubbing in. We have my favorite guest, Yes,
- 0:17Speaker 2: favorite guest in the building.
- 0:18Speaker 1: She is She needs no introduction, but let's give her
- 0:22Speaker 1: the guest honors.
- 0:25Speaker 3: She's a pop artist, she's an actress, she's an author,
- 0:28Speaker 3: she's an LGBTQ plus advocate, and she is a director
- 0:32Speaker 3: of a first ever feature film with focused features.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Everyone.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Welcome my fiance Hailey Kyoka.
- 0:42Speaker 4: Thank you so much, fame, what a beautiful intro. Welcome back,
- 0:47Speaker 4: Thank you so much. I haven't seen you guys in
- 0:49Speaker 4: so long.
- 0:53Speaker 3: We have so much to talk about, and I feel
- 0:57Speaker 3: obviously so much pride for the reason of why you're here.
- 1:01Speaker 2: But I just want to go ahead.
- 1:04Speaker 3: And say that ticket sales are on sale for girls
- 1:08Speaker 3: like girls in theaters right now, right now.
- 1:12Speaker 2: So go get your tickets before you listen to our
- 1:14Speaker 2: also or we get.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Yes, everybody, take a pause, don't worry, want to take here.
- 1:19Speaker 1: When you get back, go buy your tickets. Buy a
- 1:22Speaker 1: couple extra seats so that you can bring some extra frame.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Absolutely make a plan. Sell the theaters out. Yes, I
- 1:29Speaker 2: know the scrubbers can do it. I believe in the
- 1:31Speaker 2: scrubbers me too. I'm grateful for them, I say, grateful. Great,
- 1:36Speaker 2: I'm grateful for them. I'm tired, grateful. I don't know
- 1:41Speaker 2: why you're tired. You don't do anything. I don't do anything.
- 1:44Speaker 2: I want to talk about.
- 1:46Speaker 3: I mean, I'm so close to you and I know
- 1:50Speaker 3: the ins and the outs and everything.
- 1:52Speaker 2: In between, but I want to talk about what you're.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Feeling right now, Like knowing that ticket sales are on
- 1:58Speaker 3: sale for your movie that you your first movie that
- 2:00Speaker 3: you directed, Like what are you feeling?
- 2:02Speaker 4: It's so crazy, It's so surreal, Like I mean, I
- 2:06Speaker 4: don't know, you just buy tickets growing up going to
- 2:08Speaker 4: see movies, so to know, like you can go on
- 2:10Speaker 4: Fandego or wherever and just like see girls like girls
- 2:14Speaker 4: there and buy your ticket. And I mean, it's been
- 2:17Speaker 4: a ten year journey, so it's like such a surreal
- 2:20Speaker 4: feeling and I'm trying to stay present, but it's also
- 2:26Speaker 4: you know, nerve wracking but exciting and yeah, I can't
- 2:30Speaker 4: believe it's finally here, Like I mean, back and Beck
- 2:33Speaker 4: has been on this journey for eight years, with me,
- 2:36Speaker 4: and so the fact that the tickets are on sale
- 2:38Speaker 4: now is it's insane.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I know, we're weally, I got pinch me moment. We're
- 2:43Speaker 2: in it. You're in it.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like T minus whatever x amount under thirty days.
- 2:50Speaker 2: This is it, Like, this is.
- 2:51Speaker 4: The moment that we've been waiting for. And you know,
- 2:57Speaker 4: hopefully the community and my friends and allies.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Show up because I'm super proud of this film. You
- 3:04Speaker 2: should be in time. I got to see the movie
- 3:06Speaker 2: first of all, and yeah it was so we've got
- 3:10Speaker 2: some viewership in the building. First of all.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I also like, I don't know the strategy the timing
- 3:16Speaker 1: of you releasing it in June. If that what the
- 3:18Speaker 1: strategy was, I think it just worked out that way.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh well, it's like perfect because I feel like this
- 3:23Speaker 1: movie is like this summer. It's like it's just the
- 3:26Speaker 1: vibe is like summer.
- 3:28Speaker 4: Yeah, well the movie is set in summer, so it's
- 3:30Speaker 4: definitely giving summer.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, thank god, So I've done my job. Yeah, like
- 3:36Speaker 2: it's not giving winter, it's giving summer.
- 3:38Speaker 1: No, Like, if you if you came out with this
- 3:40Speaker 1: in January, I'm going to be all confused.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yes, it's like really excellent timing. Thank you. Yeah, very
- 3:46Speaker 2: well Voe thought out.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But like when we went to go see it, like
- 3:49Speaker 1: it's so crazy because your name is all over it,
- 3:52Speaker 1: like you did everything, you did everything for this movie.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And I was like so crazy because I'm like watching
- 3:58Speaker 1: all the like all the credits go and it's like
- 4:00Speaker 1: this by Haley Kyoko, Story by Haley Kyoko, Director by Haley,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and I'll like, yeah, dang, Like that's usually a bunch
- 4:06Speaker 1: like a bunch of other people, and when you did
- 4:09Speaker 1: all of it, well, I've.
- 4:10Speaker 4: Been kind of like, I mean, listen, it took an
- 4:12Speaker 4: absolute team to make this happen. Yes, it wasn't just
- 4:16Speaker 4: on my own, but I kind I'm like the baton
- 4:20Speaker 4: r and like I feel like I've been passed, you know,
- 4:22Speaker 4: like in those Olympic relay races and you passed the
- 4:25Speaker 4: baton to the next person, and like throughout this whole journey,
- 4:29Speaker 4: I have been the baton from twenty fifteen to twenty
- 4:33Speaker 4: twenty six, and I'm kind of the connected thread of
- 4:37Speaker 4: it because someone has to be pushing and fighting to
- 4:41Speaker 4: get this movie made. And if you're not doing it,
- 4:44Speaker 4: then who else will you know?
- 4:46Speaker 2: If not you, who that's good, Yeah, exactly.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But that's kind of what I want to talk about first,
- 4:50Speaker 1: is like how many no's did you get before? I mean,
- 4:53Speaker 1: we're all talking about the movies coming out, like it's here,
- 4:55Speaker 1: it's coming, it's so exciting, but like, how many nos
- 4:57Speaker 1: did you have to hear before you got the one yes?
- 5:01Speaker 2: I mean so many nos, like hundreds of no's. You
- 5:04Speaker 2: know what kept you going?
- 5:07Speaker 4: I was telling Beca like there was this this feeling
- 5:10Speaker 4: in my body that I just I had to keep going,
- 5:14Speaker 4: like I didn't feel like I.
- 5:15Speaker 2: Had a choice because Girls Like Girls.
- 5:18Speaker 4: When I came out at twenty fifteen, was so important
- 5:21Speaker 4: for not only myself but for my community, and it
- 5:25Speaker 4: was breaking stereotypes and barriers, and I felt like if
- 5:30Speaker 4: I gave up, this story would not be told, or
- 5:33Speaker 4: if it was going to be told, it was going
- 5:35Speaker 4: to be told in twenty.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Years or thirty years.
- 5:37Speaker 4: And so that just the drive of thinking about my
- 5:40Speaker 4: fans and the people out there, Like you think about
- 5:43Speaker 4: a nine year old, I've had a night a twenty
- 5:46Speaker 4: year old come up to me saying I was nine
- 5:48Speaker 4: when I watched the Girls Side Girls music video, and
- 5:51Speaker 4: now I'm twenty years old, out and proud and getting
- 5:54Speaker 4: to go see the film in theaters with my friends,
- 5:58Speaker 4: Like that is like totally why I never gave up.
- 6:02Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean it was years and years of
- 6:04Speaker 4: like how do you get a movie made? And like, well,
- 6:06Speaker 4: you have to write a script and you have to
- 6:08Speaker 4: develop the story and what does that look like? And
- 6:11Speaker 4: then you know you're writing the script, and then it's like, okay,
- 6:15Speaker 4: what is it going to cost to make this? And
- 6:16Speaker 4: then you're like editing the script of figuring out how
- 6:19Speaker 4: to execute a film for the budget that you may
- 6:22Speaker 4: or may not have, and then you're just excellent, but
- 6:24Speaker 4: thank you so much. And then you know and then
- 6:27Speaker 4: you have the deck and then you go out and
- 6:29Speaker 4: you pitch to all the different studios and they all
- 6:32Speaker 4: say no, and they're like.
- 6:34Speaker 2: But we care about queer stories.
- 6:36Speaker 4: And it's like, well, why aren't you uplifting this one?
- 6:38Speaker 4: But Focus Features raised their hand in twenty twenty and
- 6:44Speaker 4: the movie was with another production company at the time
- 6:47Speaker 4: and that fell through, and so there were so many
- 6:49Speaker 4: iterations where I was like, I mean, I've celebrated with
- 6:52Speaker 4: my family so many times, like we did it, the
- 6:55Speaker 4: movie's happening, and then it falls apart, and you're starting
- 6:59Speaker 4: from scratch all over again. And you're also just like
- 7:02Speaker 4: as a first time filmmaker, you're having to convince people
- 7:06Speaker 4: to invest their money into you and to believe that
- 7:11Speaker 4: you can execute it well and that.
- 7:13Speaker 2: People will show up for your story.
- 7:14Speaker 4: And so a lot of the journey has been just
- 7:17Speaker 4: convincing people that this story deserves to have a platform
- 7:23Speaker 4: and to exist, and that we haven't had representation like
- 7:26Speaker 4: this for our community in a very long time, or
- 7:29Speaker 4: if we do, it's once every twenty years, and it
- 7:32Speaker 4: shouldn't be like that, Like we should have representation all
- 7:34Speaker 4: the time every year.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I just have to say, like that is like serious
- 7:38Speaker 1: perseverance and like I don't know if tenacity is the
- 7:41Speaker 1: right word, yeah, because like I just like you hear
- 7:48Speaker 1: just like rejection, like I when you hear nos so
- 7:50Speaker 1: much to keep being able to push through that and
- 7:52Speaker 1: keep going and have so much faith and hope and
- 7:55Speaker 1: like in you and what you can produce and what
- 7:57Speaker 1: you can like bring is like really admirable.
- 8:00Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 8:01Speaker 4: It definitely I'm not like religious, but it definitely challenged
- 8:06Speaker 4: me to have faith in the fact that that it
- 8:10Speaker 4: was going to work out eventually and then I like, listen.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I had yourself.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Yeah, And I had tons of moments where I'm screaming, crying,
- 8:18Speaker 4: like just devastated, feeling so alone and trapped and like
- 8:23Speaker 4: on my own journey. And so that was like an
- 8:28Speaker 4: extremely isolating experience trying to get this film made. But
- 8:32Speaker 4: then the tides kind of turned when you know, the
- 8:35Speaker 4: other production company kind of dropped out and then Mark
- 8:38Speaker 4: Platt Productions raised their hand. You don't know Mark Platt,
- 8:41Speaker 4: He's produced Wicked and.
- 8:45Speaker 5: So small these really small films projects, and you know,
- 8:51Speaker 5: he believed in the story and his team believed in
- 8:53Speaker 5: the story, and it worked out with them and focused
- 8:56Speaker 5: features to kind of come together and and cheer me
- 9:00Speaker 5: on and support this project.
- 9:02Speaker 2: And so that's when it was a really interesting turn.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I remember talking back about it where I was like,
- 9:06Speaker 4: oh my gosh, I actually feel supported and I think
- 9:09Speaker 4: this actually might happen.
- 9:10Speaker 2: Like the energy really.
- 9:12Speaker 4: Shifted, because before it was just like constant rejection, constant knows,
- 9:17Speaker 4: you know, budgeting it out for a certain city and
- 9:19Speaker 4: then that falling through and trying to go shoot it,
- 9:22Speaker 4: and then there's like a fire and then there's the pandemic,
- 9:24Speaker 4: and there's one thing after a next, and finally when
- 9:28Speaker 4: Mark Platten Focus came together, I was like, oh, this
- 9:31Speaker 4: might actually happen. Like this, the energy shifts and you realize,
- 9:36Speaker 4: like when things aren't working and you're banging down the doors,
- 9:39Speaker 4: like sometimes you want to keep banging on that door,
- 9:42Speaker 4: but sometimes those doors are broken, Like sometimes those door
- 9:46Speaker 4: you should your energy. You actually have to completely shift
- 9:49Speaker 4: and go to an entirely different building and start knocking
- 9:52Speaker 4: on those doors, and then a door start and then
- 9:54Speaker 4: a door opens.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I mean, I've seen you know, I have said this
- 9:59Speaker 3: so many times. I don't I have a knockin' I
- 10:01Speaker 3: don't know anyone who has worked on something like this
- 10:04Speaker 3: for ten years and just person like had the goal
- 10:08Speaker 3: to get it done and got it done. I want
- 10:10Speaker 3: to go back to twenty fifteen when you wrote girls
- 10:13Speaker 3: Like Girls and directed the music video, choosing not to
- 10:16Speaker 3: be in the music video because of your own personal fears,
- 10:20Speaker 3: and the shift from going from that to then casting
- 10:26Speaker 3: two half Asian leads. Can you take us on that journey?
- 10:30Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:30Speaker 4: I mean, I think girls Like Girls the universe kind
- 10:34Speaker 4: of mirrors my journey when I wrote girls Like Girls
- 10:37Speaker 4: in twenty fifteen, I wasn't out. I wasn't confident in
- 10:41Speaker 4: who I was, and so when I was writing with
- 10:44Speaker 4: Lily and Oen the lyrics for the song, I wanted
- 10:48Speaker 4: to sound like I was confident and that I could,
- 10:51Speaker 4: you know, stealing kisses from your missus, you know, doesn't
- 10:55Speaker 4: make you freak out. Like they're very like bold lyrics,
- 10:58Speaker 4: but I didn't feel that way at the time. So
- 11:00Speaker 4: it's trying to like manifest feeling embodied and who I
- 11:04Speaker 4: was and self love. And when we were doing the
- 11:08Speaker 4: music video, I didn't want to put myself out there,
- 11:11Speaker 4: and so I'm so grateful for Stephanie and Kelsey. They
- 11:13Speaker 4: did an incredible job in the music video, but I
- 11:17Speaker 4: kept my I was like coming out, but I kept
- 11:19Speaker 4: myself separate still. And so then we went on this
- 11:21Speaker 4: like long, long journey where it's really cool where that
- 11:25Speaker 4: was the first step, and then there was you know,
- 11:29Speaker 4: the novel, and now there's the movie. And the movie
- 11:31Speaker 4: is the most authentic version of this story where the
- 11:36Speaker 4: characters are their most authentic selves, and getting to cast
- 11:41Speaker 4: actors that represent the characters so well reflecting my own
- 11:45Speaker 4: journey back to me is really beautiful and like now
- 11:49Speaker 4: I'm on stage waving the rainbow flag and screaming girls
- 11:53Speaker 4: like girls and like super proud of being a lesbian.
- 11:57Speaker 4: And so it's a really beautiful thing to witness where
- 12:02Speaker 4: this ip has kind of grown with me, and so
- 12:05Speaker 4: of course it's changed. You know, It's like the book
- 12:08Speaker 4: is its own experience, and you can, you know, divulge
- 12:13Speaker 4: in the description of a jacket for a page and
- 12:15Speaker 4: a half, but in the movie you only have ninety minutes, right,
- 12:19Speaker 4: And so the movie is you know, you know, a
- 12:24Speaker 4: glance here and a touch here, and getting to visually
- 12:27Speaker 4: show the feelings that I felt growing up being queer
- 12:32Speaker 4: and being in the closet and falling in love with girls.
- 12:35Speaker 1: There were I don't really know what I'm allowed to
- 12:37Speaker 1: say about the movie, but there were so many times
- 12:41Speaker 1: when I was like watching it with like what you
- 12:44Speaker 1: were saying, with like the grays of a hand or
- 12:46Speaker 1: like a touch or like just certain things that I
- 12:48Speaker 1: was like.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Only women can understand that, do you know what I mean?
- 12:51Speaker 2: Like I felt all details.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Yes, and like I felt all those like the longing
- 12:55Speaker 1: and the like the wanting, and like I like really
- 12:57Speaker 1: felt all that. And I was like, I think just
- 13:00Speaker 1: because I knew that like it came from you. I
- 13:02Speaker 1: was like, that's a woman's touch. Like guys don't.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Get that, do you know what I mean? Like focusing
- 13:07Speaker 2: on other stuff, yes for sure, But there was so
- 13:09Speaker 2: much but.
- 13:10Speaker 1: It was like so beautifully done and there I just
- 13:13Speaker 1: like felt it so much. And then there was these
- 13:15Speaker 1: other little things that you just like put in there
- 13:17Speaker 1: that were so nostalgic to me as like a kid,
- 13:20Speaker 1: like having a crush and falling in love and like
- 13:23Speaker 1: all those things.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Back in the day.
- 13:26Speaker 1: What was the year.
- 13:27Speaker 2: It's two thousand and six.
- 13:28Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, But like there were so many nods to
- 13:31Speaker 1: that that like really brought back these like vivid memories
- 13:35Speaker 1: of like when I had a crush on someone and
- 13:37Speaker 1: they and they entered on the aim, the sound like
- 13:40Speaker 1: the yeah, the opening of the door and like all
- 13:43Speaker 1: that stuff. Like I was like, oh my gosh, Like
- 13:46Speaker 1: I was coly too, do you know what I mean?
- 13:48Speaker 1: But just like a straight version of Coli.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Totally, and like Girls Like Girl is unapologetically girls Like Girls.
- 13:54Speaker 4: But this story is so universal because whether you're straight
- 13:58Speaker 4: or queer, everyone has had to confront their crush, yeah,
- 14:04Speaker 4: at some point in their life and had to be
- 14:06Speaker 4: like do you like me or not?
- 14:08Speaker 2: Is this a thing or not? Are we going steady
- 14:12Speaker 2: or not? Like? What where are we at? No? Like
- 14:14Speaker 2: I resonated with Cohali so much as a character.
- 14:17Speaker 4: I literally some clarity, get me, some answers, use your
- 14:21Speaker 4: words of affirmation.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Yes, come on.
- 14:25Speaker 3: But it's so interesting because there's going to be people
- 14:28Speaker 3: who resonate with both characters so much. Because I watch
- 14:31Speaker 3: it and I resonate with Sonya and I think about
- 14:34Speaker 3: who When I met you and fell in love with
- 14:37Speaker 3: a woman for the first time, I was turning thirty,
- 14:39Speaker 3: so I had a sense of self of like knowing
- 14:41Speaker 3: who I was. And I think if I was in
- 14:44Speaker 3: high school navigating those feelings of my religion and falling
- 14:48Speaker 3: in love with my best friend, and how would I
- 14:50Speaker 3: handle it? I probably would have handled it how Sonia did.
- 14:53Speaker 3: So I have a lot of empathy and compassion for her.
- 14:56Speaker 3: But I know from a Coli standpoint, there's like frustrations
- 14:59Speaker 3: of a sad like feeling.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Like also resonated with Sonya too, so it's like there.
- 15:06Speaker 4: Are You're more of a person?
- 15:09Speaker 2: Ali?
- 15:10Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 15:10Speaker 2: But I love that.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I love that you made a movie that is representation
- 15:14Speaker 3: for queer people and that we really haven't seen yet.
- 15:20Speaker 3: And yet there's people that are going to go who
- 15:22Speaker 3: don't have that exact represent that exact experience, but they're
- 15:26Speaker 3: going to leave being like, oh.
- 15:27Speaker 2: My gosh, I remember that.
- 15:28Speaker 3: I remember falling in love with someone.
- 15:32Speaker 4: So and like when you're sixteen, seventeen years old, you're like,
- 15:35Speaker 4: I'm going to marry this person.
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yeah, everything I said today, Yeah.
- 15:39Speaker 4: You're like, this is the one. I'm not meaning anyone else.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Yeah, this is it.
- 15:43Speaker 4: Yeah, And so it was really important, you know, when
- 15:48Speaker 4: approaching making this film. You know, they are young protagonists,
- 15:52Speaker 4: but it is told through a mature lens because I
- 15:55Speaker 4: think when you're that age, you think you're twenty.
- 15:57Speaker 2: Five, you think you're thirty. You're like, I know everything
- 16:01Speaker 2: you know.
- 16:02Speaker 4: And so that was really important for me and how
- 16:05Speaker 4: we approached, you know, the cinematography and just the storytelling
- 16:10Speaker 4: of it all.
- 16:27Speaker 3: Can we talk about your first day on set and
- 16:30Speaker 3: the getting house of that, because yeah, I've always thought
- 16:33Speaker 3: about it. I never thought about it until this day,
- 16:35Speaker 3: but I we well, actually I want to get back,
- 16:37Speaker 3: I want to get to where we where you filmed
- 16:39Speaker 3: the movie, because I think that was one of those
- 16:41Speaker 3: things of like you talk about banging on every door
- 16:44Speaker 3: and it's locked or it won't budge, and then the
- 16:47Speaker 3: right door opens and then the doors continue to open,
- 16:50Speaker 3: so you can go ahead.
- 16:52Speaker 4: And yeah, so I mean, you know, we budgeted the
- 16:55Speaker 4: film to shoot in so many different places in Canada specifically,
- 16:59Speaker 4: and they can tinuously fell through. And then finally when
- 17:03Speaker 4: the stars were starting to align and I got the
- 17:05Speaker 4: green light after the book, and.
- 17:08Speaker 2: They called me.
- 17:09Speaker 4: And I don't know if a lot of people know this,
- 17:10Speaker 4: but you don't necessarily get to choose where you're shooting
- 17:13Speaker 4: the film. So even though the story is set in Oregon,
- 17:16Speaker 4: you could be shooting the film literally anywhere, depending on
- 17:20Speaker 4: what the production decides and tax you know, credits and
- 17:24Speaker 4: all that stuff. And so they call me and they're like, hey,
- 17:26Speaker 4: we're going to shoot this movie in Colonna, Canada, which
- 17:29Speaker 4: is east of Vancouver.
- 17:31Speaker 2: Have you heard of it?
- 17:32Speaker 4: And most people who are listening to this podcast, most
- 17:35Speaker 4: people don't know of Colonna, Canada and Colonna east of Vancouver.
- 17:40Speaker 4: It's kind of in this valley and it's called like
- 17:42Speaker 4: the California of Canada. And I'm like shook when they
- 17:47Speaker 4: call me because my grandparents are buried there, and I
- 17:51Speaker 4: grew up going to Colonna, Canada.
- 17:55Speaker 2: What are you all?
- 17:57Speaker 4: I grew up visiting my grandparents on my Japanese side
- 18:01Speaker 4: and we would go every.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Three or four years.
- 18:03Speaker 4: I have a baby photo of me taking my first
- 18:05Speaker 4: steps during the holidays in my grandparents' house, which is
- 18:09Speaker 4: four streets down from where we shot.
- 18:13Speaker 2: And this whole film and.
- 18:15Speaker 4: The process has been really embracing not only my sexuality,
- 18:20Speaker 4: but also just like my culture and being half Japanese
- 18:23Speaker 4: and representing that on the screen and getting to a
- 18:28Speaker 4: place where I felt confident in being able to tell
- 18:31Speaker 4: my authentic truth and story.
- 18:32Speaker 2: So the fact that we ended up shooting this.
- 18:34Speaker 4: Film where I got to visit my grandparents you know,
- 18:37Speaker 4: burial site, and got to be shot at this restaurant
- 18:41Speaker 4: that my grandma used to take us to, which is
- 18:43Speaker 4: like the only Japanese restaurant in town, which is like
- 18:47Speaker 4: one of the last scenes in the film.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah yeah, where she works. Yeah.
- 18:51Speaker 4: So it was very like that was like a moment
- 18:54Speaker 4: where I was like, oh, this, whatever happens, this was
- 18:58Speaker 4: the post was meant to be, like the timing of everything,
- 19:03Speaker 4: like this is a homecoming.
- 19:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not freaky that's so freaky. It's very meant
- 19:10Speaker 2: to be though. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so you you. I
- 19:13Speaker 2: go up there with you for that. You had been
- 19:15Speaker 2: up there for a few months.
- 19:16Speaker 3: And then I come up to be there for the
- 19:17Speaker 3: first day shooting and we get up super early and
- 19:20Speaker 3: we drive to set. And Hayley, as you know, she's
- 19:22Speaker 3: been an actress, she's been part of sets all the time,
- 19:26Speaker 3: this is the first like director position.
- 19:29Speaker 2: So we show up to set and it's chos it's chaos.
- 19:35Speaker 4: I am getting yelled at because someone's unhappy. I'm getting
- 19:39Speaker 4: like screamed at because you know, it's like high tension,
- 19:43Speaker 4: you know.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Yeah, And also like you're the one that people everyone
- 19:45Speaker 1: has to like. You're like the manager of it all.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Yeah, you end up like they say, like directors are
- 19:50Speaker 4: like the therapists of set. But a lot of the
- 19:53Speaker 4: times when you're making a small indie film, you have
- 19:56Speaker 4: to hire people that are super passionate. So with passion
- 20:00Speaker 4: comes passion even show emotion. People are working on very
- 20:05Speaker 4: small budgets, they're stressed, and so within the first ten
- 20:09Speaker 4: minutes arriving on set, I am getting annihilated.
- 20:13Speaker 2: But the car right there were listening to I can
- 20:15Speaker 2: go the day. Everyone waiting ten years for this moment.
- 20:21Speaker 2: He goes, I hope we can have a huddle.
- 20:23Speaker 3: We faced on my sister so I can do like
- 20:25Speaker 3: a team huddle with everyone.
- 20:26Speaker 2: And then we get there and it's just like chaos. Yeah.
- 20:30Speaker 4: And then so eventually we i we you know, sizzled
- 20:34Speaker 4: the fire, figured things out.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I get to set and I'm like in such shock.
- 20:41Speaker 4: They start rolling and my ads like looking at me,
- 20:44Speaker 4: and I'm like.
- 20:45Speaker 2: What, She goes, are you gonna say?
- 20:47Speaker 3: Action?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Action?
- 20:50Speaker 4: And I like sit seven in the morning and I
- 20:53Speaker 4: just am like and then that, you know, obviously the
- 20:56Speaker 4: rest is history. And then this shoot was amazing. But
- 20:59Speaker 4: the first day was very intense.
- 21:01Speaker 2: How many days all in was it? It was twenty
- 21:04Speaker 2: three and like a half days. That's twenty three very
- 21:07Speaker 2: intense day.
- 21:08Speaker 4: Very intense days, like you're doing ten to fifteen pages
- 21:12Speaker 4: a day, and like most big budget films they do like.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Six, so you're just cramming it.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Yeah, and you're super grateful for everyone because everyone has
- 21:23Speaker 4: to believe in the story to donate and their time.
- 21:27Speaker 2: They're obviously getting.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Paid, but it's it's a tight budget, it's a tight schedule,
- 21:32Speaker 4: and every every dollar you see is on the screen.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Every dollar that we had is on the screen, and
- 21:40Speaker 4: so yeah, it was it was a wild time.
- 21:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:44Speaker 4: We were shooting a scene one time and a bear
- 21:47Speaker 4: was walking down the train tracks.
- 21:49Speaker 2: We had a pause, like there was a lot going on.
- 21:52Speaker 4: So you're you're working every shot you see in this film.
- 21:56Speaker 4: Everyone over like one hundred people worked so hard to
- 22:00Speaker 4: get that shot. And people always ask me, like my
- 22:03Speaker 4: favorite scene. It's like every scene that made it is
- 22:06Speaker 4: my favorite scene.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Right, because you have to leave so much on the
- 22:08Speaker 2: cutting round.
- 22:09Speaker 4: Oh yeah, like over twenty scenes are cut, Yeah, because
- 22:12Speaker 4: of time. Just yeah, or just like you know, it
- 22:15Speaker 4: doesn't irrelevant or did it not irrelevant? It's just like
- 22:18Speaker 4: you know, it's your you know, it's like I don't know,
- 22:21Speaker 4: putting together a scrap book.
- 22:22Speaker 2: You have all these amazing.
- 22:23Speaker 4: Photos, but like flow wise, like the only pick certain
- 22:26Speaker 4: ones because that you know, elevates the story, and the
- 22:31Speaker 4: story is about these two young girls and elevating them
- 22:35Speaker 4: and having them be on the best stage possible.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It'd be like us not editing our reels and having
- 22:42Speaker 3: to pick our best scene.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and sometimes you can take but it just doesn't
- 22:49Speaker 2: make sense. In the reel.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Yeah no, yeah, yeah, okay, understand thank you for making
- 22:53Speaker 1: dumbing it down.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I just need it for us to understand.
- 22:58Speaker 4: So you so, yeah, back, I got to see like firsthand.
- 23:02Speaker 2: It was amazing, though, I mean, what can it can be?
- 23:04Speaker 3: I was thinking about how terrifying that would be to
- 23:07Speaker 3: be in that position and not having never done it before,
- 23:11Speaker 3: and then it's like, hey, it's time to call action,
- 23:13Speaker 3: and just you're just jumping into the deepest endeavor.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Nothing makes me more anxious than thinking about hundreds of
- 23:21Speaker 1: people coming to me with very emotional drama.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Yeah, constantly. Yeah. And she loved it. Yeah, she loved
- 23:29Speaker 2: every second of it.
- 23:30Speaker 3: I I've never I'm always impressed with you, But I
- 23:33Speaker 3: think those twenty four days because I knew you were
- 23:35Speaker 3: so exhausted, like physically just depleted, but you were so
- 23:39Speaker 3: grateful that it was happening, that there was this like
- 23:43Speaker 3: power that you just had through the whole thing.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Well, I have I have an interesting question.
- 23:47Speaker 1: So, like you're in the thick of it, right, You're
- 23:49Speaker 1: this is your You're gone, this is everything that you've
- 23:51Speaker 1: been like building and dreaming of, and you're in it.
- 23:55Speaker 2: When you were away shooting and Becca was home.
- 23:57Speaker 1: What were things that she did that made you feel
- 24:00Speaker 1: like loved and supported?
- 24:02Speaker 4: I mean, she just we were really in a good flow.
- 24:05Speaker 4: She knew how intense it was going to be, especially
- 24:09Speaker 4: because she was there for the first couple of days.
- 24:11Speaker 4: I think when you're there, you understand, like, oh, she's
- 24:15Speaker 4: not going to be on her phone for at least
- 24:17Speaker 4: eleven hours, you.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Know, right.
- 24:19Speaker 4: But I felt like we communicated really well and I
- 24:22Speaker 4: felt super loved, Like you know, when Becca came to
- 24:24Speaker 4: visit me and just like checked in and you know,
- 24:27Speaker 4: i'd call her being stressed about some kind of scene
- 24:30Speaker 4: or problem that came up, and you know.
- 24:34Speaker 2: She was just the best, super supportive.
- 24:36Speaker 4: And cheered me on and kept me in like a
- 24:38Speaker 4: positive mindset because you have to stay positive and you're
- 24:41Speaker 4: dreaming of doing this your whole life and you get
- 24:44Speaker 4: there and it's not going to be easy. You're going
- 24:47Speaker 4: to have to fight for it. But I love, I
- 24:49Speaker 4: loved every second of it. And it means the world
- 24:51Speaker 4: that I get to share this journey with Becca, and
- 24:54Speaker 4: like the fact that we're going to get to go
- 24:55Speaker 4: see this movie in theaters together, knowing she's seen me
- 24:59Speaker 4: like saw on the floor.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Well, I think it's so important because I think, like
- 25:04Speaker 1: there are people in relationships who if like their partner
- 25:07Speaker 1: like goes and they're doing they're super busy, Like you
- 25:09Speaker 1: were so busy you weren't like ignoring her, like you
- 25:11Speaker 1: just had so much going on. If Becca could have
- 25:14Speaker 1: handled it very differently, she could have like demanded more
- 25:17Speaker 1: like time energy.
- 25:18Speaker 4: I think when I think, it's really helpful for your
- 25:21Speaker 4: partner to like see it, like I think it was
- 25:24Speaker 4: really helpful that Becca was there at.
- 25:26Speaker 2: The beginning and she like knew the flow of the day.
- 25:30Speaker 4: I think if she didn't have an understanding of what
- 25:33Speaker 4: it would be, it would probably be hard, like.
- 25:34Speaker 2: I'd be like, where's my good morning text? Well, and
- 25:37Speaker 2: she did such a good job. We always she always
- 25:39Speaker 2: said good night, like we always good morning to night. Yeah,
- 25:41Speaker 2: we both prioritize that. And she even left me like
- 25:44Speaker 2: a box full of.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Little notes that I could pluck out and read if
- 25:47Speaker 3: I like needed a little book. Very I think that
- 25:53Speaker 3: I knew this was ten years in the making, so
- 25:55Speaker 3: for me, it was like I have had a really
- 25:58Speaker 3: hard time when she's gone on tour, which I think
- 26:00Speaker 3: I've spoken about, but I think knowing what this, how
- 26:04Speaker 3: much had been building for this, I couldn't have any
- 26:08Speaker 3: negative impact on it. Like I knew I needed to
- 26:11Speaker 3: be like the support system and just be there for her.
- 26:13Speaker 2: So I think I think that's when she knew she
- 26:16Speaker 2: wanted to marry me. Yeah, it's so important, I think,
- 26:20Speaker 2: I really do.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Like, I think it's really important to have a like
- 26:23Speaker 1: supportive partner and being there in these moments that like
- 26:26Speaker 1: take time away from your relationship.
- 26:28Speaker 2: You know what I mean, because like.
- 26:29Speaker 4: Yeah, you sometimes you have to be selfless and you
- 26:31Speaker 4: know that that's what your partner needs and you're not
- 26:35Speaker 4: going to really get anything out of it by pushing.
- 26:38Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and you're stronger for it fighting it. Yeah, totally.
- 26:42Speaker 3: I want to talk about because the story is loosely
- 26:45Speaker 3: based off of something that you did experience in your youth,
- 26:49Speaker 3: and there are some real life scenes in the movie
- 26:52Speaker 3: that I wanted to talk about.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Oh yeah, you don't know this real life see some
- 26:57Speaker 2: things that.
- 26:58Speaker 4: Really see a scene where she goes to get her
- 27:01Speaker 4: jacket from Sonya's gast that was a real that was
- 27:06Speaker 4: a real experience I had.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So I didn't have that exact same experience, but I've
- 27:11Speaker 1: had similar experiences, and I was so pissed.
- 27:13Speaker 2: I literally yelled out loud. I yelled out loud the
- 27:18Speaker 2: B word.
- 27:19Speaker 4: I well, I mean, basically, it's a pivotal moment where
- 27:22Speaker 4: you're Coalie is confronting Sonya about whether she likes her
- 27:27Speaker 4: or not. And my Sonya in high school, we would
- 27:31Speaker 4: say all of juice to each other, and like we
- 27:34Speaker 4: basically had this like platonic relationship, but we had never kissed,
- 27:38Speaker 4: and so I had I went to go get my
- 27:41Speaker 4: jacket from her house because she was leaving.
- 27:43Speaker 2: This is separate from the movie.
- 27:45Speaker 4: She was leaving for like a trip, and I used
- 27:48Speaker 4: that as an excuse to like.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Confess because we all do, and like ask her if.
- 27:52Speaker 4: She wanted to kiss me, and she just like you know,
- 27:55Speaker 4: shook her head no, And I was like heartbroken. And
- 28:00Speaker 4: so there's a lot of scenes and experiences that Coally
- 28:03Speaker 4: goes through, even though Coli'S environment is fictional, that I
- 28:08Speaker 4: got to share, and like the actual jacket because I'm
- 28:11Speaker 4: an emotional hoarder, I put in the scene. It's not
- 28:14Speaker 4: the jean jacket that Colie's wearing, but there is the
- 28:17Speaker 4: exact jacket from the.
- 28:19Speaker 2: Girl's house that I saved because I was.
- 28:23Speaker 4: Like, maybe one day I'll make this movie and maybe
- 28:25Speaker 4: one day I'll put the jacket in the scene.
- 28:28Speaker 2: You know. What's so so there's a fun easter egg.
- 28:31Speaker 1: It's so funny because in the scene before with the
- 28:34Speaker 1: scene where Sonya's like takes the jacket from her because
- 28:37Speaker 1: she's cold. Yeah, in my mind, I was like, give
- 28:39Speaker 1: it to her, that's your mom's like, it's going home
- 28:42Speaker 1: with her, Like you need that back, and then You're
- 28:44Speaker 1: like I need it back.
- 28:45Speaker 3: I was like, yeah, yeah, can we get to well,
- 28:48Speaker 3: first of all, Easton, do you have a microphone?
- 28:52Speaker 2: Well? Yeah, okay, yeah, we would love.
- 28:54Speaker 4: To bring Eastern in for a different perspective here.
- 28:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 3: I just wanted to ask because Easton watched it, and
- 29:00Speaker 3: as a straight ally I wanted to and a man,
- 29:05Speaker 3: I wanted to sell what am I?
- 29:07Speaker 2: You're a straight ally? But well thank you, yeah, I
- 29:10Speaker 2: thank you.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Thank you for a straight ally, but a man's perspective
- 29:14Speaker 3: who is a fan of all things. I wanted to
- 29:16Speaker 3: have Easton's perspective on seeing the movie.
- 29:18Speaker 6: Hi, thanks for having me first time calling a long
- 29:21Speaker 6: time listening. My goodness, Hayley, what a masterpiece I loved
- 29:27Speaker 6: this so much. And I am a I'm a straight guy.
- 29:33Speaker 2: You know, I'm a straight out.
- 29:35Speaker 6: I'm a straight But I really think that this movie
- 29:39Speaker 6: captures the feeling of falling in love so beautifully, no
- 29:42Speaker 6: matter who you love.
- 29:44Speaker 2: And also just personally.
- 29:46Speaker 6: For me, I grew up in a town very similar
- 29:49Speaker 6: to now I know it's Kelowna, Canada.
- 29:53Speaker 2: I had supposed to be organ.
- 29:55Speaker 6: I lived in the mountains of northern California, and I
- 29:59Speaker 6: had so many visceral memories of like riding my bike
- 30:02Speaker 6: through the.
- 30:02Speaker 2: Woods and like wondering if someone liked me like that,
- 30:06Speaker 2: just daydreaming.
- 30:07Speaker 6: Of course, yes, and that hits so strongly for me,
- 30:10Speaker 6: and just I'm sorry, and now I want to go
- 30:14Speaker 6: back and watch it again. Just there's so many there's
- 30:17Speaker 6: so many scenes that hit so hard, and I don't
- 30:19Speaker 6: want to spoil anything, but like, oh my goodness, it's
- 30:21Speaker 6: just I.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Just think it's a beautiful story of love.
- 30:24Speaker 6: That's that's and and also I was thinking about, like,
- 30:29Speaker 6: as a straight man, every story is basically for me, you.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Know, white straight man. But a lot of movies, I
- 30:36Speaker 2: got a lot of movies.
- 30:37Speaker 6: Yeah, I watched this movie, and I'm thinking about all
- 30:39Speaker 6: the young girls that are going to see this and
- 30:41Speaker 6: see themselves see stories that they've experienced be told and
- 30:44Speaker 6: be told. This is an important story and this is
- 30:46Speaker 6: worthy of being told. And it made me so excited
- 30:49Speaker 6: for everyone to see it. Go see Girls Like Girls
- 30:53Speaker 6: in theaters June nineteen.
- 30:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, thank you has already bought his ticket.
- 30:58Speaker 4: He's going to have a watch party as we all are.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Love youson thank you.
- 31:03Speaker 3: I want to talk about the music for the movie,
- 31:07Speaker 3: Oh Yes, because you Miss Hailey.
- 31:11Speaker 2: Kioko decided that she.
- 31:15Speaker 3: Had the songs from the movie, but beyond that, she
- 31:19Speaker 3: wanted to do an inspired by soundtrack, so she went
- 31:22Speaker 3: ahead and wrote a how many songs?
- 31:24Speaker 2: It's fourteen fourteen.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Songs soundtrack with six features, yes, six features, with queer
- 31:31Speaker 3: all queer artists, and she did it herself.
- 31:36Speaker 1: I will say the music in this movie is perfect,
- 31:42Speaker 1: Like every scene it just hits, like the original songs
- 31:46Speaker 1: and the other songs that you have in there. It's
- 31:49Speaker 1: like so perfect. And I take that so seriously. I
- 31:53Speaker 1: feel like, what's is it called scoring?
- 31:55Speaker 2: I mean it's music yeah, opposition, yeah yeah, like putting
- 31:59Speaker 2: songs and like moments and stuff like that I take
- 32:01Speaker 2: that very seriously, and I feel like you did it
- 32:04Speaker 2: so beautifully in this movie. Thank you. Yeah, I mean
- 32:07Speaker 2: every emotion at the right that time. I mean, that
- 32:11Speaker 2: is the best news ever. Thank you. It's you know,
- 32:15Speaker 2: it's music.
- 32:16Speaker 4: Is is everything powerful. And when I went into this film,
- 32:21Speaker 4: I thought that the music would be like a third
- 32:24Speaker 4: character and that the music would almost dominate the film.
- 32:29Speaker 4: And when I went into editing and I saw the performances,
- 32:33Speaker 4: you know, after the fact, I kept for moving music
- 32:39Speaker 4: too overpowering it. Yeah, and because the girls were just
- 32:43Speaker 4: so good and the acting was so good that the
- 32:48Speaker 4: music was distracting and so actually, you know, it was
- 32:52Speaker 4: a really beautiful journey where there's minimal amounts of music
- 32:55Speaker 4: in the film, but when it is in the film,
- 32:58Speaker 4: it's impactful, you know, and we full needle drops in
- 33:01Speaker 4: there like emmage and heap and take it in, Sarah.
- 33:05Speaker 1: That is one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie,
- 33:09Speaker 1: because I don't care who you are. That song hits
- 33:13Speaker 1: like such a like yeah, it just it was such
- 33:15Speaker 1: a moment in time.
- 33:17Speaker 2: Yeah, and I took me back there. Yeah, it was crazy.
- 33:20Speaker 2: So we grabbed Robbie's arms this song and he was like,
- 33:24Speaker 2: what's this song?
- 33:25Speaker 4: I was like, I mean the fact that we were
- 33:28Speaker 4: really get that song was so incredible, and so within
- 33:31Speaker 4: that we also, I have some original music in the
- 33:34Speaker 4: film as well, and that was a really cool journey
- 33:37Speaker 4: because I had these ideas that I had written when
- 33:42Speaker 4: I was sixteen, but I had never finished them or
- 33:45Speaker 4: you know, fully explored them, and so when we were
- 33:48Speaker 4: finishing the film, I was like, what if what if
- 33:52Speaker 4: I finished these songs for and write it for the film.
- 33:54Speaker 4: And so that's notice and lungs that are that are
- 33:57Speaker 4: that are in the film. And then there's another song
- 34:00Speaker 4: called falling Through, where we took a sample of my
- 34:02Speaker 4: original voice when I was sixteen one of the demos,
- 34:06Speaker 4: and we sampled it and then wrote a song on
- 34:08Speaker 4: top of that.
- 34:08Speaker 2: So that's a third song.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Is that when Coley's like the one that you really loved?
- 34:13Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 34:13Speaker 4: Yeah, and myself is that falling Through?
- 34:17Speaker 2: Yes?
- 34:18Speaker 4: And then so once I finished the film, I was like,
- 34:21Speaker 4: you know, I always wanted a soundtrack and inspired by album,
- 34:25Speaker 4: and you know, this movie is not on the level
- 34:28Speaker 4: of Barbie or Wicked. You know, it's it's a small
- 34:31Speaker 4: indie film, and so they don't really do soundtracks for
- 34:35Speaker 4: movies this size. And so I finished the film, I
- 34:38Speaker 4: went into the studio, I reached out to a bunch
- 34:41Speaker 4: of friends and artists and collaborators, and we wrote an
- 34:45Speaker 4: extra ten song set our original songs inspired by different
- 34:49Speaker 4: scenes in the film. One of the songs Sonya wears
- 34:52Speaker 4: periwinkle nail polished. One of the songs is called Periwinkle Princess.
- 34:56Speaker 4: There's a song called Choker, and so it was it's
- 35:00Speaker 4: so awesome to get to return to music after being
- 35:03Speaker 4: on this directorial adventure and to write music through the
- 35:09Speaker 4: lens of you know, Coley and Sonya. And my hope
- 35:13Speaker 4: and goal is that people are able to watch this
- 35:15Speaker 4: movie and then they're able to come home and have
- 35:17Speaker 4: an entirely different, you know, audible experience of getting to
- 35:22Speaker 4: listen to the album, which like almost expands an extens
- 35:25Speaker 4: from the film.
- 35:26Speaker 2: Yeah, which we used to have. Yeah, we used to
- 35:29Speaker 2: get that. I mean, you get them, I mean really
- 35:33Speaker 2: big movies.
- 35:34Speaker 4: But I was really inspired by Garden State and what
- 35:37Speaker 4: Zach Braff, who actually plays the father in Girls Like Girls,
- 35:41Speaker 4: and what they were able to accomplish, because that soundtrack
- 35:43Speaker 4: was like everything to me, and it like captus a
- 35:47Speaker 4: specific time in my life, and I was like, gosh,
- 35:49Speaker 4: how cool would it be to have a Girlly Girls
- 35:51Speaker 4: album that captures this feeling of young love and heartbreak
- 35:56Speaker 4: and discovery and trying to find yourself and having that
- 36:00Speaker 4: live forever. Yeah, So having that exist and have the
- 36:04Speaker 4: movie exist.
- 36:05Speaker 2: So it's like what Gavin de Grau was for One
- 36:07Speaker 2: Tree Hill first totally.
- 36:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 3: I think of the Want to Remember soundtrack because it
- 36:14Speaker 3: is one of my favorite soundtracks of all two like hearing.
- 36:18Speaker 3: I think what's so cool is that not every the
- 36:21Speaker 3: soundtrack is extra songs that aren't in the movie, but
- 36:25Speaker 3: they are aligned with the movie.
- 36:28Speaker 2: So like, once you see the movie.
- 36:29Speaker 3: You can listen to a song and be like, oh
- 36:31Speaker 3: my gosh, this this song.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Was inspired by this scene.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Yes, and it's so collaborative and yeah, I just can't.
- 36:38Speaker 2: I don't think I know of anyone else who's ever
- 36:40Speaker 2: done this.
- 36:41Speaker 3: A director who then wrote the soundtrack.
- 36:43Speaker 2: So wait, when does the album come out?
- 36:45Speaker 4: So the album comes out June twelfth, one week before
- 36:48Speaker 4: a small movie, so you can listen to it, listen
- 36:52Speaker 4: to it and you know, dive deep into the world,
- 36:56Speaker 4: and then the movie comes out June nineteenth.
- 36:58Speaker 2: What are you gonna do June? I teenh Like, what's
- 37:01Speaker 2: the day going to look like?
- 37:02Speaker 4: I'm probably gonna be working, but I'll probably be going
- 37:06Speaker 4: to a bunch of screenings and do me.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Are you gonna do that like pap into different theaters?
- 37:12Speaker 4: That's my plan and then I would love to maybe
- 37:13Speaker 4: go see the movie with some friends on the weekend.
- 37:16Speaker 2: I'm just gonna be at the movie theater twenty four
- 37:18Speaker 2: to seven, So come say hi, I'll be there.
- 37:22Speaker 3: We're signing up for every membership available, egal AMC, whatever
- 37:27Speaker 3: result all the things.
- 37:30Speaker 4: But yeah, I mean it's it's gonna be such a
- 37:33Speaker 4: surreal feeling. And you know, it's like for a movie
- 37:36Speaker 4: to take ten years to get made. I was like,
- 37:39Speaker 4: I gotta just put everything I have in this film.
- 37:42Speaker 4: I have to direct this film. I need to write
- 37:44Speaker 4: the music, like I have to just like push myself
- 37:48Speaker 4: to the limit of really embodying and connecting with my
- 37:52Speaker 4: sixteen year old self because this is a once in
- 37:56Speaker 4: a lifetime opportunity that I've.
- 37:58Speaker 2: Worked so hard to.
- 38:00Speaker 4: Achieve and to to get and so I had to
- 38:04Speaker 4: do everything I could to try to make it as
- 38:08Speaker 4: big as humanly possible with the limited resources that we had.
- 38:13Speaker 1: You know, you absolutely have to pop into different theaters
- 38:16Speaker 1: throughout the weekend.
- 38:17Speaker 3: You yeah, yeah, yeah, you did it, like you it's
- 38:20Speaker 3: coming out Like there were so many moments where it
- 38:22Speaker 3: was like, Okay, we're gonna go film this, and then.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Well, right, and then she goes many times.
- 38:25Speaker 3: And then she films it, and then it's like okay,
- 38:28Speaker 3: we're editing it.
- 38:29Speaker 2: And then hopefully it turns out good.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Yeah, And I don't think people realize that Haley Dinner,
- 38:33Speaker 3: she knew it was going to be a theatrical release,
- 38:35Speaker 3: but she didn't know if it was going to be
- 38:36Speaker 3: like very limited.
- 38:37Speaker 2: Theaters, like theaters, we don't know.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Yeah, So there was so many question marks leading up
- 38:44Speaker 3: to this moment.
- 38:44Speaker 2: And then the trailer comes out and it has whatever,
- 38:48Speaker 2: twenty six million views, twenty six.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Million views, same, I mean, every single one of those
- 38:53Speaker 3: people who viewed it to go see the movie.
- 38:55Speaker 2: And then I just.
- 38:57Speaker 3: Think it's incredible that every moment that's been a quote
- 39:00Speaker 3: mark is now an exclamation point, like you did it, beautiful,
- 39:06Speaker 3: But I do you know, like, what are we doing
- 39:09Speaker 3: after the movie's done?
- 39:10Speaker 2: Like the movie is going to do with my life.
- 39:12Speaker 2: We're gonna have the wedding plan.
- 39:13Speaker 1: You weddy of things to me for I forgot.
- 39:21Speaker 2: I just don't want movie mode. But yeah, we have
- 39:23Speaker 2: so much to look forward to. Yeah, you can carry
- 39:24Speaker 2: the soundtrack to your wedding.
- 39:26Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, Girls Like Girls string Quartet down the aisle,
- 39:29Speaker 4: I mean.
- 39:30Speaker 1: Sky's Honestly, you have to to me the string quartet
- 39:34Speaker 1: version of Girls Like Girls and like the vision now,
- 39:37Speaker 1: by the way, is that the version they play when
- 39:39Speaker 1: the credits roll at the ends?
- 39:40Speaker 2: It's so beautiful? Thank you? Wait did you stay till
- 39:44Speaker 2: the very end? Yeah? So I didn't know if I could.
- 39:47Speaker 2: I didn't know. I didn't spur alert.
- 39:50Speaker 3: We just need to let people know that you have
- 39:51Speaker 3: to stay past the credit.
- 39:53Speaker 2: I don't believe it's worth it.
- 39:56Speaker 4: Yes, there's a little bonus, a peekaboo, a little peekaboo.
- 40:17Speaker 2: There's also something else there is and what well we
- 40:23Speaker 2: can cut it if it's so just ye, No, I
- 40:25Speaker 2: don't know if it's supposed to be a surprise. What
- 40:27Speaker 2: the the extra scene? No, there you put like special
- 40:32Speaker 2: things to people?
- 40:33Speaker 1: Oh my social Oh yeah, oh my gosh, I didn't know.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I didn't know if that was like, I didn't know
- 40:38Speaker 1: if you've seen that a surprise and I was.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Like, I don't want to blow it is in this
- 40:42Speaker 2: special things. Yeah, I didn't know that. I was freaking
- 40:46Speaker 2: out and when I watched it, Yeah, but I was
- 40:49Speaker 2: that's very nice to acknowledge that. But I was talking
- 40:51Speaker 2: about that there's a ya that have to stay for
- 40:55Speaker 2: and I just have.
- 40:56Speaker 3: To say, I also want to go before we have.
- 40:59Speaker 2: To wrap, but I I want to talk about Maya
- 41:01Speaker 2: and Mara, who are the leads of this movie. Yeah,
- 41:03Speaker 2: because are so good. People are going to know these names.
- 41:07Speaker 2: They are incredible.
- 41:08Speaker 3: And you know there's so many movies and shows coming
- 41:11Speaker 3: out and people come and like, oh they were cute.
- 41:12Speaker 2: They were cute.
- 41:13Speaker 3: These girls are They are Coly and Sonya and Maya.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I will never forget. Hayley started getting her audition sent in.
- 41:23Speaker 3: It was so fun while she was casting the movie
- 41:25Speaker 3: because I got to see everyone's Like, it was so
- 41:27Speaker 3: fun getting to see everyone. Maya was the first person
- 41:31Speaker 3: that sent an audition for Coli.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Well, she was the first person we were that we
- 41:35Speaker 2: watched Yeah, yeah, no way.
- 41:36Speaker 4: Yeah, Maya Acosta and they were like, hey, we just
- 41:39Speaker 4: got some tapes. Do you want to see it. I
- 41:40Speaker 4: was like, oh my gosh. We were in New York
- 41:42Speaker 4: and I opened it up and it was Maya. And
- 41:45Speaker 4: I remember it was a scene when she's with Sonya
- 41:49Speaker 4: in her bedroom and she was the only person where
- 41:53Speaker 4: when the scene was over, she just had the tape
- 41:56Speaker 4: roll and she just sat on the bed and just
- 41:58Speaker 4: like took in the space and like.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I was like, I think I like got emotion.
- 42:04Speaker 4: Because I was like, oh my gosh, Like I remember
- 42:07Speaker 4: that feeling when your crush leaves the bedroom and you're
- 42:10Speaker 4: in their room in their space alone, and it's such
- 42:14Speaker 4: an intimate feeling, and she just captured it so well,
- 42:18Speaker 4: and I was like, oh my gosh, she's going to
- 42:20Speaker 4: be the one to be, you know when we go
- 42:21Speaker 4: into these audition processes and she ended up getting the role.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Yeah every time to be like, oh they're good, but
- 42:26Speaker 2: they're not. They're not Maya.
- 42:28Speaker 4: She's so authentic and she's so coly and I see
- 42:33Speaker 4: a lot of like myself and her, but she also
- 42:36Speaker 4: elevated the character so much with her unique quirkiness and
- 42:41Speaker 4: like choices. And then you know Myra Maloy, who plays Sonya,
- 42:46Speaker 4: is just like.
- 42:47Speaker 2: Magnetic, Like she turned you see her and you're.
- 42:50Speaker 5: Like, whoa, You're like, by the way, she's you.
- 42:55Speaker 2: Know, like a sixty foot screen she's your doppelganger.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Think that is the nicest thing ever, because people like
- 43:01Speaker 4: say that I'm the real version of Mara, like Myra's
- 43:04Speaker 4: like the AI version of me, which is kind of
- 43:07Speaker 4: a backhanded like compliment, but I'll take.
- 43:11Speaker 2: It, no, because she's gorgeous.
- 43:13Speaker 4: She's gorgeous, and she does such a good job navigating
- 43:16Speaker 4: Sonya's character is so complex because you know, I think
- 43:21Speaker 4: when we're navigating something new territory, we make mistakes and
- 43:26Speaker 4: people become victims of our experiences and it doesn't mean
- 43:31Speaker 4: that you're a bad person, you're just it depends on
- 43:34Speaker 4: how you handle it afterwards. And so she does a
- 43:37Speaker 4: really beautiful job navigating this character who is messy and
- 43:42Speaker 4: doesn't really know how to handle these feelings for another woman.
- 43:46Speaker 4: And I'm so proud of her performance too. So they're
- 43:50Speaker 4: both incredible. I can't wait for you guys to see it.
- 43:52Speaker 2: Yeah, they really are so special. The fact that their
- 43:55Speaker 2: names are Mara and my, oh my gosh, you guys
- 43:58Speaker 2: don't even understand.
- 43:59Speaker 4: And then my, yeah, Mayra's mom, her real name was Maya,
- 44:03Speaker 4: so I had to Maya's.
- 44:05Speaker 2: I had a Mayra.
- 44:06Speaker 4: My cinematographer was Sonya, so I had two Sonia's two
- 44:11Speaker 4: Maya's Amyra. I was like, I can't do this. This
- 44:15Speaker 4: is so complicated.
- 44:16Speaker 3: Yeah, like going back and seeing yourself, Well, you can
- 44:20Speaker 3: either go back to your high school self of navigating
- 44:24Speaker 3: your version of who Coli was, or yourself of writing
- 44:28Speaker 3: and directing girls like girls. If you could go back
- 44:31Speaker 3: and tell her something and see where you are now,
- 44:34Speaker 3: what would you say?
- 44:36Speaker 4: I would be like whispering to her, like you're gonna
- 44:39Speaker 4: do it, Like don't give up, It's gonna happen, like
- 44:42Speaker 4: keep going. And I think I wish I trusted the process.
- 44:48Speaker 4: It's so hard for someone it's so hard to receive
- 44:51Speaker 4: someone saying trust the process, like yeah, everything happens for
- 44:55Speaker 4: a reason. It's so hard to accept that because you're
- 44:58Speaker 4: just like no, and they're like, why isn't it happening now? Yeah,
- 45:03Speaker 4: it's And it's also wild.
- 45:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 45:05Speaker 4: When I had such a deep crush and fell in
- 45:08Speaker 4: love with this girl in high school was so traumatic
- 45:10Speaker 4: for me. It took me years to kind of heal
- 45:13Speaker 4: from that, and so to know that that trauma has
- 45:16Speaker 4: led to my directorial debut is so full circle and
- 45:21Speaker 4: so cool that I get to share that part of
- 45:24Speaker 4: me while also being in such a wonderful, healthy, magical
- 45:29Speaker 4: relationship and be in such a different you know, I
- 45:33Speaker 4: dreamed of.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Being where I am now.
- 45:36Speaker 4: So it's really it's like a huge hug to my
- 45:39Speaker 4: younger self. And I hope that this film, you know,
- 45:43Speaker 4: is a hug to so many people who.
- 45:46Speaker 2: Their shit goes No.
- 45:48Speaker 1: It's like it's such a universal feeling, you know what
- 45:50Speaker 1: I mean, all.
- 45:52Speaker 4: Trying to heal our younger selves, and our younger selves
- 45:55Speaker 4: feel very like broken and lost and confused. And that's
- 45:59Speaker 4: what this film is, you know. It's my gift to
- 46:02Speaker 4: everyone to love themselves a little bit harder, being a
- 46:07Speaker 4: little kinder to ourselves and knowing that we do deserve love,
- 46:12Speaker 4: we do deserve joy and happiness, and we're worthy of that.
- 46:17Speaker 4: And I think when you're young and trying to navigate it,
- 46:21Speaker 4: it's it can be really really hard, yeah, And so
- 46:24Speaker 4: I hope that this film makes things lighter and easier
- 46:27Speaker 4: for people that are.
- 46:28Speaker 2: Going through it right now.
- 46:30Speaker 4: I hope this film heals our younger selves, whether you're
- 46:33Speaker 4: in your forties or fifties or sixties, remembering that time
- 46:37Speaker 4: that you fell in love with that one person that
- 46:39Speaker 4: you never understood what was happening, why it was happening,
- 46:43Speaker 4: and if they ever liked you back. And I hope
- 46:46Speaker 4: you're able to move forward from it.
- 46:49Speaker 2: Well, you got the girl.
- 46:51Speaker 3: I made the girls, make you freak out, You got
- 46:58Speaker 3: the girl, you made the movie, you wrote the.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Soundtrack, you did it all. Yeah, we did it everyone.
- 47:05Speaker 3: When I say, go out, buy tickets, opening weekend is
- 47:10Speaker 3: the most important critical.
- 47:12Speaker 4: Because it's got to happen then, otherwise it might not exist.
- 47:17Speaker 2: June nineteenth, June twentieth, June twenty.
- 47:19Speaker 3: First those yes, and buy your tickets today.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yeah, as soon as possible.

- 47:27Speaker 3: they're coming.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yes. And I'm so proud of you and proud of you.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Are excited, truly one of one.
- 47:35Speaker 3: There's not a single person that's done what you've done,
- 47:37Speaker 3: and I hope that you, beyond hearing it from everyone else,
- 47:41Speaker 3: give that to yourself and be so proud of who
- 47:43Speaker 3: you are.
- 47:45Speaker 2: I love you.
- 47:46Speaker 4: It's special to get to to share this with such
- 47:50Speaker 4: an amazing, loving partner. So thank you for being there
- 47:53Speaker 4: for me, and I'm so excited for everyone to see it.
