- 0:00Speaker 1: And again, this is a white man building out a
- 0:03Speaker 1: black woman character. And I don't know if the character
- 0:05Speaker 1: was always meant to be black, but it's it's it
- 0:08Speaker 1: makes me have questions. It does make me have questions
- 0:10Speaker 1: about your intent and whether or not that tent even
- 0:14Speaker 1: match with the impact.
- 0:26Speaker 2: What up in and ats? This is four all nerds,
- 0:28Speaker 2: and it is I.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I'm the captain of the ship.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Now this is me, Takiana Keen.
- 0:33Speaker 1: The Grand Dutch is a tech also known as Dark
- 0:36Speaker 1: Chocolate Phoenix. It was all a dream fire, Kodak, Blackwoods.
- 0:39Speaker 2: The Ting of the North and Gucci Mandalorian.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And today I am joined by a very special guest
- 0:47Speaker 1: friend of the show, always number one with the reviews
- 0:51Speaker 1: and always just always out and about doing her thing.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Please introduce yourself.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Hey, y'all, Naddie Martinez here aka Gotham Geek Girl, Old
- 0:59Speaker 4: Things Geek.
- 1:00Speaker 3: We hear to talk comics and movies, that's.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Right, and today we are doing our review of a
- 1:09Speaker 1: movie called One Battle after Another. Now this may sound
- 1:12Speaker 1: familiar to a few people because you may have recalled
- 1:14Speaker 1: the review that my brother DJ Benhamien gave. He had
- 1:19Speaker 1: some words about it, and I said, well, I got
- 1:22Speaker 1: to get a chance to see it and feel, you know,
- 1:24Speaker 1: see how I feel about that, Nadia, she actually saw
- 1:26Speaker 1: it twice. So you got to really be sure about
- 1:30Speaker 1: how you feel about this film one bout out the
- 1:34Speaker 1: number before we get into the detailing and all the
- 1:36Speaker 1: other stuff. Can you just give me just a short
- 1:42Speaker 1: thing of how you feel about it, Like, just just
- 1:44Speaker 1: something brief that explained to me how you felt about
- 1:46Speaker 1: this film.
- 1:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:48Speaker 4: I in my initial reaction, I described it as like
- 1:50Speaker 4: chaotically suspenseful, bizarre. It's like a satirical reflection of politics, anxiety,
- 1:56Speaker 4: written cinematically, stunning, explosive, exciting performances, but also disjointed.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Okay, all right, that's I like that summary.
- 2:07Speaker 1: I felt it was a unique film, uh in its
- 2:10Speaker 1: approach to humor, you know, humor and high stakes, I
- 2:14Speaker 1: should say, the outrageous situations. It did have a lot
- 2:17Speaker 1: of visual the lights cast. I thought it was phenomenal,
- 2:23Speaker 1: very strong performances all around. I mean, you're you're pretty
- 2:26Speaker 1: much dealing with a bunch of very seasoned professionals and
- 2:29Speaker 1: you know, some newcomers, but generally, you know, everyone was
- 2:32Speaker 1: really fire. And at the same time, I felt the
- 2:37Speaker 1: film trivialized a lot of things, and I felt the
- 2:42Speaker 1: way I have notes, So would that being said, like
- 2:46Speaker 1: what should we start? Should we started the good? Let's
- 2:48Speaker 1: start at good, Let's start with the good. So characters,
- 2:52Speaker 1: I just mentioned a bunch of characters already, Like tell
- 2:54Speaker 1: me how you felt about each one. So like, for example,
- 2:57Speaker 1: we have Leo DiCaprio who plays Bob, the main character,
- 3:01Speaker 1: one of the main characters.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So Leo is one of my favorite actors of all time,
- 3:07Speaker 4: Like he's up there with Denzel Daniel da Lewis.
- 3:10Speaker 3: For me, I love him and most of what he's in.
- 3:14Speaker 4: And for me, I think this was more of a
- 3:16Speaker 4: fun role because he's pretty much like a pothead.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Running around in a robe like the movie, and like.
- 3:23Speaker 4: I think it was like fun to see him like this,
- 3:26Speaker 4: so like chaotic and like an energetic performance from him,
- 3:31Speaker 4: but not in his usual type of movie that he's in.
- 3:35Speaker 4: So I think it's fun, but it's like not like
- 3:39Speaker 4: Oscar level worthy.
- 3:41Speaker 1: No, yeah, no, I agree, it was more like he
- 3:45Speaker 1: was just having fun, good time. Maybe there was this
- 3:48Speaker 1: was a mortgage movie for him.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But it was still Leo.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Right at the end of the day, He's a great
- 3:53Speaker 1: answer and is still entertaining to watch and play the characters.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I agree with you there, you know it in terms
- 4:00Speaker 1: of like if you've seen this side of him a lot,
- 4:02Speaker 1: like it reminded me of and again not not Oscar
- 4:06Speaker 1: inspired performances, but it reminded me of just the manicness
- 4:09Speaker 1: of his Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street,
- 4:13Speaker 1: Like it was approaching there, but like, like you said,
- 4:15Speaker 1: it's just very much.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Weedhead, just you know, doing his thing.
- 4:20Speaker 1: So but I appreciated it, right, And I will say
- 4:22Speaker 1: that about the film in general, like depending on where
- 4:26Speaker 1: you're coming in on this, like it's very fun. What
- 4:30Speaker 1: else who we are? We have Tiana Taylor as Perfidia.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Tiana is one of my personal favorite people just in
- 4:37Speaker 1: general as well as an artist. I love that she
- 4:40Speaker 1: is doing a lot more film. I feel like every
- 4:43Speaker 1: time we turn around, she's in a new film. What
- 4:45Speaker 1: did you think about her character? And very uniquely named
- 4:49Speaker 1: Perfidia Beverly Hills.
- 4:52Speaker 4: So this is Mike grep with the film, meaning you
- 4:56Speaker 4: kind of talked about this. One of the reasons why
- 4:59Speaker 4: I find the film as profound as people are making it.
- 5:02Speaker 4: I personally didn't like the way it portrayed not just
- 5:06Speaker 4: the revolutionaries, but the way it portrayed black woman. I
- 5:08Speaker 4: feel like she was way over sexualized, and like, I
- 5:13Speaker 4: think she's great, and I'm happy, like you just said,
- 5:15Speaker 4: like she's taking on more roles because I want to
- 5:17Speaker 4: see more diversity from her. I think she's fantastic, she's entertaining.
- 5:21Speaker 4: We know she could dance, we know she got a body,
- 5:23Speaker 4: we know she's gorgeous.
- 5:24Speaker 2: She saying yeah, do everything.
- 5:27Speaker 4: I just feel like the movie just kind of painted
- 5:29Speaker 4: her as this like one dimensional character who's like crazy
- 5:32Speaker 4: about sex and like forgot all her morals when she's
- 5:35Speaker 4: supposed to be like this like rebel queen. And I
- 5:39Speaker 4: just wish we could have gotten a little more of
- 5:41Speaker 4: that from her than just like, oh, let's do it
- 5:43Speaker 4: on top of this car.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, no, my baby, like like she.
- 5:46Speaker 2: Just fe it was wild.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You know, I was grappling with that because you said
- 5:51Speaker 1: that's one of the first things we were discussing, and
- 5:54Speaker 1: you know, I slept on it and woke up and
- 5:56Speaker 1: I was just like, this is the this is the.
- 6:01Speaker 2: What's the word I'm looking for? Like this is the conundrum.
- 6:04Speaker 1: On the one hand, I do feel like, damn, they
- 6:07Speaker 1: just over sexualize the character. Like, but then on the
- 6:09Speaker 1: other hand, I'm just like, but that is the character. Like,
- 6:13Speaker 1: and this is also not just the over sex character.
- 6:16Speaker 1: It's a character that's like I comes and goals as
- 6:19Speaker 1: I please. Like she has literally said that at one
- 6:21Speaker 1: point in the movie, like not free spirit, but like,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I do what I want to do in this life.
- 6:27Speaker 2: And she felt very true to that.
- 6:30Speaker 1: That particular character felt very true to that in every
- 6:33Speaker 1: aspect of life, which is why I also kind of
- 6:35Speaker 1: then understood the sexuality, you know, the quote over sex
- 6:39Speaker 1: nature of her just kind of like, oh, I'm just
- 6:41Speaker 1: gonna do what I need to do. But when you
- 6:44Speaker 1: couple that with the idea that she comes from a
- 6:47Speaker 1: long line of revolutionaries and this and that not to
- 6:48Speaker 1: say revolutionaries can't be sexual. It's just for a movie
- 6:53Speaker 1: that is primarily lots of satire, lots of comedy, it
- 6:58Speaker 1: may read, as we mentioned earlier, that it's trivializing, like
- 7:05Speaker 1: are you really like and and of course you have
- 7:09Speaker 1: the years of stereotypes and all the negative things that
- 7:16Speaker 1: are said about black women, you know, like the jesepbelt,
- 7:18Speaker 1: Sapphire all the other stuff. So it's like it's also
- 7:21Speaker 1: touching on pond historical tropes negative tropes of black women too,
- 7:24Speaker 1: which is why I'm just where, like I said, the
- 7:27Speaker 1: conundrum comes in because I'm just like, you know, out
- 7:30Speaker 1: off shore. And this was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Whether he meant that shit or not, it's kind of
- 7:34Speaker 1: just like, is it about your intent or the impact?
- 7:38Speaker 2: So I could and.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Then I mean, you know, he alluded to that too
- 7:42Speaker 1: in his review, just saying how he didn't like how
- 7:44Speaker 1: it portrayed revolutionaries or the idea of being a revolutionary.
- 7:48Speaker 1: So I like, at one hand, I'm just like, well,
- 7:51Speaker 1: that's just that particular character, because not every black woman
- 7:55Speaker 1: was like that in the movie.
- 7:56Speaker 2: But at the same time, just like I definitely see.
- 7:59Speaker 4: It because I feel like, for me, if like you know,
- 8:02Speaker 4: coming like you said, like the line of revolutionaries, like
- 8:05Speaker 4: it was emphasized, like that's been passed down in her family.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I just feel like, like her leaving.
- 8:10Speaker 4: Her daughter, it would have made sense if she left
- 8:14Speaker 4: for a reason, but no, she just.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Like she was a rat.
- 8:17Speaker 4: She she like she gave up on gave up people up,
- 8:20Speaker 4: they got shot up. She didn't care, like she was
- 8:23Speaker 4: like I'm gonna do me, which I get, but like,
- 8:26Speaker 4: if she had a purpose, like she's a revolutionary queen,
- 8:29Speaker 4: they should have made her like this rebel queen with
- 8:31Speaker 4: the with a plan, like maybe she ran away to
- 8:33Speaker 4: Mexicool and broke like eighty people with her, Like if
- 8:36Speaker 4: she did something impactful, I think it would have made
- 8:39Speaker 4: more sense.
- 8:40Speaker 3: But no, she just left her daughter.
- 8:41Speaker 4: She's like, oh, my man, don't my man, don't want
- 8:44Speaker 4: me no more?
- 8:46Speaker 1: Harriet Ah, No, No, I'm joking, but I feel you
- 8:52Speaker 1: like you know what they tried to And I see
- 8:56Speaker 1: that they also tried the writer all time Sanderson wrote it,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and I could he mentioned that he wrote this like
- 9:04Speaker 1: or has been writing it for twenty years or something
- 9:06Speaker 1: like that. And again this is this is a white
- 9:11Speaker 1: man building out a black woman character.
- 9:13Speaker 2: And I don't know if the character was always meant.
- 9:15Speaker 1: To be black, but it's it's it makes me have questions.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It does make me have questions about your intent and
- 9:22Speaker 1: whether or not that tent even match with the impact.
- 9:25Speaker 1: I will say that he tried to give her even
- 9:27Speaker 1: like an arc, like you know, she's regretting the things
- 9:31Speaker 1: she did and or seems like regret or maybe it's
- 9:33Speaker 1: just sadness.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Maybe it's a bit of both. I don't know. So
- 9:36Speaker 2: that she wasn't completely flat.
- 9:39Speaker 1: At least towards the end, but I feel you it's
- 9:42Speaker 1: just kind of like that's it, Like it felt hollow
- 9:45Speaker 1: in ways and not Tianna's performance performance was fantastic. It
- 9:50Speaker 1: was how the character was written. I was just like,
- 9:54Speaker 1: I don't know what was.
- 9:55Speaker 3: To that the phone thing we were talking about. She's
- 9:57Speaker 3: on the phone, like, oh something some.
- 9:58Speaker 2: The abortion, the the letter, it's.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Just yeah, everything just so kind of like I don't know.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Yeah, like her expression of like love to her daughter,
- 10:09Speaker 1: you know, by like it was all right.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Where was this before? But it's also like these people
- 10:13Speaker 2: are very young.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Everyone's going, you know somebody who's just and we're talking
- 10:18Speaker 1: long about her because she is like one of the
- 10:20Speaker 1: critical pieces of the film, right, like everything besides the daughter,
- 10:24Speaker 1: everything surrounds Perfidious, so everything revolves around her. So it's
- 10:29Speaker 1: I don't know, man, like, let's let's get back to her.
- 10:32Speaker 1: There are as mentioned, there was a bunch of people here.
- 10:35Speaker 1: We also have any so del Toro as sense. How'd
- 10:40Speaker 1: you feel about Benicio Sergio sint Carlos.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Yeah, he was.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Funny as hell. I actually really loved this character.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I like too that it was like it wasn't directly
- 10:53Speaker 4: hinted that he was part of things, like he he
- 10:56Speaker 4: had his own like revolution, like with the skateboarders and
- 10:59Speaker 4: like and like all his people in the in the store.
- 11:03Speaker 4: And I love that the whole aspect of like his
- 11:05Speaker 4: family being involved in everyone being in like a community,
- 11:09Speaker 4: like very tight knit. And I love that in the
- 11:12Speaker 4: beginning it didn't allude to that. It was just like, oh,
- 11:14Speaker 4: he's teaching Willow karate like he's very and then later
- 11:19Speaker 4: it's like, no, he he knows everything and he's just laughing,
- 11:22Speaker 4: like he's just chill.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He got his his what had Morello.
- 11:25Speaker 4: He had like there throughout the whole movie, like.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Chill, chill, You've been through this, right, you know the
- 11:33Speaker 1: O g revolutionary, been through this, know what the steps is,
- 11:37Speaker 1: know what to do, know how to shepherd people to
- 11:40Speaker 1: freedom or shepherd people to safety, and stuff like that.
- 11:42Speaker 3: He was so saying like he unbalanced to like Leo's chaos.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I will oh, that's a great point. Like I
- 11:49Speaker 1: love how chill he was. I love and and also
- 11:53Speaker 1: for the Natty and I the screen and we went
- 11:55Speaker 1: to together. The cats actually showed up, so they were
- 11:59Speaker 1: all there. They did like like a like a five
- 12:00Speaker 1: to ten minute Q and A. It was funny because
- 12:03Speaker 1: I didn't know whether it was shade or he was
- 12:05Speaker 1: just talking. But Benicio was like, yeah, and that little
- 12:07Speaker 1: piece of the movie that I'm in. I was just like,
- 12:09Speaker 1: why are you saying it like that? Like we go
- 12:10Speaker 1: see you for five seconds. He's in more than just
- 12:12Speaker 1: a little piece, and maybe it feels like a little
- 12:15Speaker 1: piece because the movie is damn near three hours long.
- 12:17Speaker 2: By the way, should have mentioned that at the top.
- 12:21Speaker 1: Beneath Show's character was yes, absolutely hilarious and absolutely needed.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I felt like like the whole film was a comedy
- 12:31Speaker 1: at the end of the day. Right at the same time,
- 12:34Speaker 1: it was just like like like he was funny, but
- 12:35Speaker 1: he was also serious, like and I liked that. I
- 12:38Speaker 1: felt like his character had the most balance in terms
- 12:40Speaker 1: of it. Didn't like he was doing funny things. He
- 12:44Speaker 1: was just being himself, you know, drinking while driving stuff like.
- 12:47Speaker 2: That, like, but he was serious about his shit.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Like I never questioned like, oh, is he is this
- 12:54Speaker 1: important to him and this and that, because like you said,
- 12:56Speaker 1: like he was being casual about it, but he wasn't
- 12:58Speaker 1: fucking playing, if that makes sense.
- 13:00Speaker 3: He's like, oh, this white boy.
- 13:01Speaker 1: You feel like he was being funny about him and
- 13:04Speaker 1: he talked, but he was making moves like he making jokes.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But as he's making jokes, he's literally making moves free people,
- 13:10Speaker 1: Like stuff is happening on his direction and people are
- 13:14Speaker 1: being protected under his direction.
- 13:16Speaker 2: So he was just a very very likable character.
- 13:19Speaker 1: And to your point, like also a very good foil
- 13:22Speaker 1: to the madness that was Leonardo's Bob. Who else, oh, Seanan, Yes, Lloyd,
- 13:33Speaker 1: my god. Today he plays Colonel Stephen J. Lockjaw, the
- 13:41Speaker 1: the white supremacist, colonel soldier, hand of the state, whatever
- 13:48Speaker 1: you want to call him, narc.
- 13:51Speaker 2: What did you think about him?
- 13:53Speaker 4: I thought he was fantastic. I thought he was great.
- 13:56Speaker 4: He was so funny. He perfectly represented like this, I
- 14:03Speaker 4: guess we'll say, like, you know, like the political landscape
- 14:06Speaker 4: now of like these men in power that are very
- 14:09Speaker 4: like inadequate and they have like this superiority complex and
- 14:15Speaker 4: his like desire for like a black woman and like
- 14:18Speaker 4: his like need for for dominance, and like feeling like
- 14:22Speaker 4: he's superior and wanting to be part of the whole
- 14:25Speaker 4: Christmas Adventures club and like.
- 14:27Speaker 3: The white white club, like we own the world, we
- 14:31Speaker 3: have power.
- 14:32Speaker 4: And I thought he was fantastic because he was like cartoonish,
- 14:35Speaker 4: but he was like a perfect villain because he was
- 14:37Speaker 4: like super weird, like serious but like very cartoonish at
- 14:43Speaker 4: the same time, and like his tight suit and.
- 14:45Speaker 3: The I love that line with like the tight shirt,
- 14:48Speaker 3: the banter.
- 14:48Speaker 4: With oh yeah, she's like, oh your shirt, stud, He's like,
- 14:52Speaker 4: I'm not gay.
- 14:56Speaker 1: He was absolutely representative of the as you say, the
- 15:01Speaker 1: red pilled god, you know, white white males where everything
- 15:05Speaker 1: is about oh you're trying to call me gay or
- 15:07Speaker 1: everything is the problem, and as you mentioned, just having
- 15:11Speaker 1: a superiority complex and just making it hard for everybody
- 15:16Speaker 1: else just because of your shortcomings or your misgivings, like
- 15:19Speaker 1: literally shortcomings. I know there was a point where they
- 15:21Speaker 1: was like I think you have lifting your shoes or whatever,
- 15:23Speaker 1: like because you're short, and it's just again, the film
- 15:28Speaker 1: was touching upon a lot of the archetypes that are
- 15:32Speaker 1: in this and have been in this country for a while,
- 15:34Speaker 1: let's be clear, but especially the ones that have been
- 15:38Speaker 1: put on pedestals that now like are right there in
- 15:41Speaker 1: our face, the the guy in the White House being
- 15:44Speaker 1: one of them. Like this movie like started really making
- 15:48Speaker 1: that really blatant and making and again to to for
- 15:52Speaker 1: better or worse, made almost everybody a caricature. And so
- 15:58Speaker 1: again there's there's parts of it where I'm just like,
- 15:59Speaker 1: I don't know that, like that you did that. But yes,
- 16:01Speaker 1: with with with Sean Penn's karrotson that shit was hilarious,
- 16:04Speaker 1: and you know, he had that terminator feel where it's
- 16:06Speaker 1: like he cannot be stopped, like he's gonna get his
- 16:09Speaker 1: you know, he's gonna do what he needs to do
- 16:12Speaker 1: and you know, just just do it for like really
- 16:16Speaker 1: I nane and selfish purposes, right, And at the end
- 16:19Speaker 1: of the day, it's just like he's an idiot, and
- 16:22Speaker 1: it's kind of how it always is, right, It's like
- 16:23Speaker 1: you're an idiot.
- 16:24Speaker 3: You're just people treat him like an idiot.
- 16:26Speaker 1: Like like yeah, like you you don't matter for real, right,
- 16:29Speaker 1: you don't got the juice like that, So you know
- 16:32Speaker 1: it was cool. Also, oh, she actually sat and watched
- 16:36Speaker 1: the film, but us Jungle Pussy is in the film
- 16:39Speaker 1: as Jungle Pussy.
- 16:40Speaker 2: Her name is Shana, Shane and Michale.
- 16:42Speaker 1: She had a smaller part, but she was part of
- 16:45Speaker 1: the group with Tianna Taylor and then how you think
- 16:46Speaker 1: she did?
- 16:48Speaker 2: She was cool.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I guess it's back to that whole issue I had.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Oh, like, I'm gonna shoot this ship up, it's my pussy.
- 16:58Speaker 4: Yeah, it was like like where revolutionary aspects, Like the
- 17:02Speaker 4: whole scene at the fire was like annoying to me
- 17:07Speaker 4: where they're like, oh, like does she even know she's pregnant?
- 17:10Speaker 4: And then like everyone just like ratted each other out
- 17:13Speaker 4: and I'm just like.
- 17:16Speaker 2: I don't.
- 17:16Speaker 3: Yeah, we're portrayed except Willow obviously.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Yeah, except except the daughter.
- 17:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 17:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Shada was kind of like Perfidia Junior in ways
- 17:26Speaker 1: right where again, like you said, there were problems with
- 17:30Speaker 1: her potential writing, and again, how that aligns or misaligns
- 17:35Speaker 1: with the tone of the movie is is where a
- 17:38Speaker 1: lot of my issues come from.
- 17:40Speaker 4: I think my main thing is that the first half
- 17:43Speaker 4: of the movie didn't come off as a comedy. I
- 17:47Speaker 4: don't think the comedy hit until the second half, so
- 17:50Speaker 4: I think if it started off funny, it may not
- 17:52Speaker 4: have bothered me as much. But totally I feel like
- 17:55Speaker 4: it completely shifted. I feel like it was subdued in
- 17:57Speaker 4: the beginning. Like in the beginning, it was very like serious.
- 18:00Speaker 4: Even the music was serious. The way they were going
- 18:04Speaker 4: to like attack like the uh the immigration camp and
- 18:07Speaker 4: like like try to break people out. It felt serious,
- 18:10Speaker 4: the music, the tone, the let everything.
- 18:12Speaker 2: Yeah, the first like fifteen minutes, right, yeah.
- 18:14Speaker 4: Like the beginning of the movie felt serious, but just
- 18:19Speaker 4: maybe like the first half of this long ass movie, it.
- 18:22Speaker 2: It felt more seriously.
- 18:24Speaker 3: So I think it.
- 18:25Speaker 4: Got funny until the Adventurers Club is when it started
- 18:29Speaker 4: to feel more like satire.
- 18:30Speaker 3: I don't think the beginning came off as sattick.
- 18:32Speaker 2: So was it not funny or you did not find
- 18:34Speaker 2: it funny?
- 18:35Speaker 3: I don't think the beginning was funny. So this is
- 18:38Speaker 3: the thing.
- 18:38Speaker 4: My first screening, like I mentioned, there was like a
- 18:42Speaker 4: critic screening, it wasn't as many people.
- 18:44Speaker 3: No one laughed. I don't think anyone laughed until the
- 18:47Speaker 3: Adventurers Club.
- 18:49Speaker 4: In this I feel like there were more laughs because
- 18:51Speaker 4: it's like, you know, way more people on watching.
- 18:54Speaker 1: The movie different, right, and they're not from a critical background, right,
- 18:57Speaker 1: there's people from the street just watching this show.
- 19:00Speaker 3: But I still don't think the first half of the
- 19:02Speaker 3: movie was that funny.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Okay, okay, that's fair.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I will agree with you that the opening tone made
- 19:09Speaker 1: me think, oh, like, I didn't know it was gonna
- 19:11Speaker 1: be that like O d over the top as the
- 19:15Speaker 1: movie continued, Right, you know, maybe it was initially a
- 19:21Speaker 1: different approach because I thought, like, I knew there was
- 19:23Speaker 1: gonna be some funny shit happening just based off the trailers,
- 19:26Speaker 1: but I didn't know it was gonna be all in
- 19:28Speaker 1: like random, fucking goofy shit happening.
- 19:33Speaker 2: I yeah, I don't know, man like like yeah.
- 19:34Speaker 1: And yes, the opening scene was very like for real
- 19:38Speaker 1: serious and I'm.
- 19:39Speaker 2: Like, oh, these these you know these is really these.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Are freedom fighters and then Perfidia says something, I'm just like, oh, okay,
- 19:48Speaker 1: and I'm not gonna you know, I can say, even
- 19:50Speaker 1: though we're talking through some of the stuff that went
- 19:52Speaker 1: on through the movie, I don't want to give everything
- 19:53Speaker 1: away because again, I know some people still want to
- 19:56Speaker 1: see it. And then of course we have Chase Infinity,
- 20:00Speaker 1: who plays Willa, the daughter of Bob and the video Willa.
- 20:04Speaker 1: How did you feel about Chase Stage's portrayal of Wula.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Oh, I thought she was fantastic. This was a great
- 20:10Speaker 4: performance as a newcomer.
- 20:12Speaker 3: She was great. Like she she brought a great balance
- 20:17Speaker 3: to the film. I think in terms.
- 20:20Speaker 4: Of like the shift of like the narrative and like
- 20:23Speaker 4: we're gonna I guess we're gonna keep the spoiler free
- 20:25Speaker 4: so I won't get too into her little line.
- 20:29Speaker 2: But yeah, don't don't don't you don't give it away.
- 20:32Speaker 4: But I thought she was fantastic, Like I loved her
- 20:35Speaker 4: banter with Leo two where it's like that I get
- 20:37Speaker 4: your shit together, Like yes, yes, she was right for
- 20:41Speaker 4: her age. I like how they played upon like she's
- 20:46Speaker 4: like her mom but not and she's smart like she
- 20:51Speaker 4: she'll you know, kind of trying like my best to
- 20:54Speaker 4: not really say much, but like she she's very She's
- 20:57Speaker 4: way smarter than like she gives off, like she'll try
- 21:00Speaker 4: to act like she doesn't know something, but she kind
- 21:02Speaker 4: of knows, and she can hold her own. I love that,
- 21:04Speaker 4: Like she's a fighter physically mentally like she's I thought
- 21:08Speaker 4: she was a great balance to the film, and I
- 21:10Speaker 4: want to see more projects from her.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I thought she was great.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I absolutely agree with you.
- 21:16Speaker 1: She and this was like her film debut right, like
- 21:19Speaker 1: full feature length film debut, and for this hard to
- 21:22Speaker 1: be her first I was like, Okay, she could act.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Number one, she can act, and that's hard. That's a
- 21:27Speaker 1: hard HI heard all to jump, particularly on your first time,
- 21:31Speaker 1: and sometimes you do strike gold immediately, you especially with
- 21:35Speaker 1: really young counter actors.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And she she did a thing.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Absolutely believable as the daughter of these two, as you mentioned,
- 21:44Speaker 1: and again as in the writing, like her character was
- 21:47Speaker 1: written with the most dimensioned and even at the screening
- 21:50Speaker 1: I mentioned the cat was there. Paul Thomas Anderson was
- 21:52Speaker 1: there too, the director and as well as the screenplay writer,
- 21:56Speaker 1: and he mentioned he said it several times. He was
- 22:00Speaker 1: just like Chase's character is the heart of the film.
- 22:02Speaker 1: It's the heart of the film everything from around her.
- 22:04Speaker 1: And I could tell, like just in how she was written,
- 22:06Speaker 1: the words, her dialogue, like everything compared to everybody else,
- 22:10Speaker 1: and what she got to do that was his, That
- 22:13Speaker 1: was his baby in the film.
- 22:14Speaker 2: Right, like in terms of like where he centered his
- 22:17Speaker 2: focus on.
- 22:17Speaker 1: And it's understandable why she's the focus, but I could
- 22:20Speaker 1: tell like she had preference from him, and how like
- 22:23Speaker 1: she was she was developed.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Let's say that as a character and then you know
- 22:28Speaker 2: that that does, and.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Of course you still got to be a talented actor
- 22:31Speaker 1: to deliver on that, and she did, and just really
- 22:34Speaker 1: kudos to her.
- 22:35Speaker 2: It was fun watching her.
- 22:36Speaker 1: It was fun seeing her in all the different situations
- 22:38Speaker 1: and how how she handled that.
- 22:40Speaker 2: Willa's the character particularly and.
- 22:45Speaker 1: She was probably one of the better portrayed black characters
- 22:49Speaker 1: in the film, not to not to forget Regina Hall,
- 22:53Speaker 1: the great Regina Hall, who played Deandra. And you know,
- 22:57Speaker 1: I was like really excited. I've I well, first of all,
- 23:00Speaker 1: I didn't even realize she was in the film until like,
- 23:03Speaker 1: like I don't know, maybe the most latest trailer. I
- 23:06Speaker 1: was like, oh shit, okay, cool, cool, cool. Love her character.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Her character seems to be the most straight laced and
- 23:12Speaker 1: the most accurate representation of what we would think a
- 23:15Speaker 1: black woman revolutionary would be. Granted, everyone does not have
- 23:18Speaker 1: to be the exact same approach in how they're how
- 23:23Speaker 1: they written, how they act, because that's just not people, right.
- 23:25Speaker 2: People are different, everything is different, but.
- 23:27Speaker 1: It just she just felt the most true. And I
- 23:33Speaker 1: think they did her dirty in the movie too.
- 23:35Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, I was gonna say, like, as you said,
- 23:41Speaker 4: like I feel like she was one of the only
- 23:43Speaker 4: females properly written in this movie.
- 23:46Speaker 3: And then at the end, I was like, She's the
- 23:49Speaker 3: only one that I had faith in, the only one
- 23:52Speaker 3: that I like, the only one like she was there
- 23:55Speaker 3: for her people. She was a true believer.
- 23:57Speaker 1: So I wish what I did not like, Like I said,
- 24:01Speaker 1: they did her dirty. I do not like that. Granted,
- 24:06Speaker 1: you know, this is about people doing illegal stuff to
- 24:08Speaker 1: to you know, get free, get other people freed on
- 24:10Speaker 1: that stuff. So things happen, right, people get popped, people
- 24:13Speaker 1: get put away, all types of stuff happened.
- 24:15Speaker 2: But I just feel like.
- 24:19Speaker 1: By the end, like everyone else, not everyone, but the
- 24:21Speaker 1: people who were still around, got some resolution, and she
- 24:24Speaker 1: was just caught up like she was the only one
- 24:26Speaker 1: who hadn't really well. I don't want to say the
- 24:29Speaker 1: people get popped, you know, don't suffer the consequences, but
- 24:32Speaker 1: she had to like suffer the consequences of everybody else too,
- 24:34Speaker 1: because like we don't see.
- 24:35Speaker 2: What happens to her after the fact.
- 24:37Speaker 1: So I just felt like, like, damn, like, the only
- 24:41Speaker 1: like you said, the only person like that you really
- 24:42Speaker 1: had that trust in that was gonna make this happen
- 24:45Speaker 1: for people. She get the worst end of the stick
- 24:48Speaker 1: or one of the worst ends of the stick than
- 24:50Speaker 1: all the others.
- 24:52Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 24:54Speaker 1: You mentioned before music and I wanted to talk about
- 24:58Speaker 1: that because that is a ridical component of the film.
- 25:03Speaker 1: Again I have notes so and maybe this is just
- 25:09Speaker 1: his style. So the way that the music was, that
- 25:11Speaker 1: the the scoring, if you will, It was disparate, like
- 25:16Speaker 1: depending on what was happening the screen, typically like especially
- 25:19Speaker 1: with some wild shit happening, like people running, and it
- 25:22Speaker 1: matched the scene right, for example, people running from the law, right,
- 25:25Speaker 1: running from people trying to try to chase them, trying
- 25:29Speaker 1: to get away from the enemy, whatever, right the move
- 25:32Speaker 1: At those points, you would get like these disparate sounds,
- 25:35Speaker 1: like where it's like someone's like banging on either end
- 25:38Speaker 1: of the piano, like doing like a really crazed out symphony, right,
- 25:43Speaker 1: like just just and and I don't know if that
- 25:46Speaker 1: makes sense as I'm expressing it, but like literally like
- 25:49Speaker 1: someone just almos, damn there, pressing any fucking key and
- 25:52Speaker 1: it's becoming like a melody. And so they would match
- 25:55Speaker 1: that up to the scenes where shit was just out
- 25:58Speaker 1: of control, like there's some and there is action in
- 26:01Speaker 1: the there's there's enough action in it, I would say.
- 26:05Speaker 1: And in those scenes like where there's a lot of
- 26:07Speaker 1: kinetic movement, the music felt more kinetic as well. So
- 26:11Speaker 1: again not and there weren't songs like they were literally
- 26:14Speaker 1: like someone was in the boof like with a bunch
- 26:16Speaker 1: of random instruments and going going in like do do
- 26:20Speaker 1: do do, like just going wild, right, But but it
- 26:22Speaker 1: would match at the same time it as a as
- 26:27Speaker 1: a sonic person. It would bother me at times because
- 26:31Speaker 1: the way the scenes m hm and again this is
- 26:34Speaker 1: just poppy.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Just fall st out.
- 26:37Speaker 1: It would be long stretches of this, the sounds along
- 26:41Speaker 1: with the scenes, and the scenes would be long. Again,
- 26:43Speaker 1: this movie's almost three hours long, and it was just
- 26:46Speaker 1: like and that was on purpose to also disorient you.
- 26:50Speaker 1: But there wasn't like a true beginning or end. And
- 26:53Speaker 1: that's not necessarily bad, but it was sort of like
- 26:55Speaker 1: these stretches of just noise while the person was talking.
- 26:59Speaker 1: And I don't know if it was just our theater,
- 27:01Speaker 1: that's how it is. This shit was loud as fuck,
- 27:04Speaker 1: like the volume. It was at point where I was like,
- 27:07Speaker 1: I cannot hear what they're saying now.
- 27:09Speaker 3: I had that in my notes. Music distracting.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Girl like it.
- 27:16Speaker 1: It was At times it was just a lot, and
- 27:18Speaker 1: I was just like, I'm just trying to follow what's
- 27:21Speaker 1: happening and not hear this whacked out you know, zuosa
- 27:26Speaker 1: flu or whatever like going in Like I just like,
- 27:29Speaker 1: and I made up a term, because like that's what
- 27:31Speaker 1: it's not like some random made up instrument that was
- 27:34Speaker 1: making these wild noises and while you're trying to like
- 27:38Speaker 1: kind of pay attention to see what's going on screen
- 27:39Speaker 1: and see, well, which, who's going where, what's happening? But yeah,
- 27:44Speaker 1: like I said, like, and there's been long stretches of
- 27:46Speaker 1: this noise underlaid or overlaid over people speaking. It would
- 27:51Speaker 1: last for like twelve minutes and then it would just
- 27:54Speaker 1: abruptly stop and then jump into a new melody song whatever.
- 28:00Speaker 1: And I was just like god damn, like like what
- 28:03Speaker 1: what what? What is your purpose it is? And and
- 28:05Speaker 1: again I think you put it very nicely.
- 28:07Speaker 3: It's very distracting, and I agree with all that.
- 28:11Speaker 4: There were definitely moments where it just felt out of place.
- 28:14Speaker 4: There were somewhere it made sense, like it added like
- 28:17Speaker 4: to the intensity and like like I said, like I
- 28:19Speaker 4: described it as anxiety ridden, Like there were yeah, that
- 28:22Speaker 4: it felt like anxiety.
- 28:24Speaker 1: And that's on purpose, clearly on purpose, right, you're in
- 28:26Speaker 1: an anxious situation, like you want some anxiety and do scenes.
- 28:30Speaker 2: So I mean that's cinema, right, you use the visuals
- 28:33Speaker 2: with the.
- 28:33Speaker 3: Hill fantactic at that scene.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Yeah, oh let's go into that just so question there.
- 28:40Speaker 1: But then the cinematography pretty incredible. Actually, there was there
- 28:44Speaker 1: was you mentioned one scene that I really loved the
- 28:47Speaker 1: scene there in the desert and they're driving through the desert,
- 28:49Speaker 1: several several catchers are driving through the desert and I
- 28:52Speaker 1: don't know where they at, but like it's one of
- 28:54Speaker 1: them things where like you know, it's just that one
- 28:56Speaker 1: road in the middle of nowhere, but it's also hilly,
- 28:59Speaker 1: so so like you're going up and down the hills,
- 29:02Speaker 1: as you mentioned, and but they do it.
- 29:04Speaker 2: From several different angles.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Like they'll do it from a wide shot so like
- 29:07Speaker 1: you could just see the cars going up and now.
- 29:09Speaker 1: But then they'll do it from a shot like a
- 29:11Speaker 1: first person shooter, like first person shooter view, yeah, where
- 29:14Speaker 1: like you're in the car right, and then even a
- 29:18Speaker 1: view where it's like on the ground itself and then
- 29:20Speaker 1: you see the rolling hills and the up and down,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and again it's on purpose. It's to disorient you. It's
- 29:26Speaker 1: to make you feel like what's happening. It makes you
- 29:28Speaker 1: feel like I'm on a ride Like that's kind of
- 29:30Speaker 1: that was also the point, like you're on a wild
- 29:32Speaker 1: ride and I'm like, okay, on the nose, I get it.
- 29:34Speaker 2: But it was still looked real good. It still looked really.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Good, and it was just some things that were just
- 29:41Speaker 1: really well done when it came to cinematography, like did
- 29:43Speaker 1: you have besides the rolling thing, any other thoughts or scenes.
- 29:47Speaker 4: Where Tiana's characters running away from Ah and like the
- 29:54Speaker 4: like the aerial view was like.
- 29:55Speaker 2: The helicopter shot, like it was, Yeah, that was.
- 29:58Speaker 3: Beautiful, that was shot really well.
- 30:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:00Speaker 1: It's interesting because Tiana, because she's also very athletic, so
- 30:04Speaker 1: like anytime she would be like running or doing some
- 30:06Speaker 1: real physical shit, the camera would be wit her, like
- 30:09Speaker 1: running with her, like it's you know, it was all
- 30:11Speaker 1: must be on a truck or something going at that
- 30:12Speaker 1: and she'd be going full you know they told that
- 30:14Speaker 1: Tom Cruise run, she'd be going full fucking speed and
- 30:17Speaker 1: like it's like you know the Tiata Taylor run, understand.
- 30:19Speaker 2: So it was, but you know, just to see that that.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Just her just exuding that character and like having a
- 30:27Speaker 1: power behind her, like I got it. And again it
- 30:30Speaker 1: was shot in that way to really let you understand,
- 30:32Speaker 1: like this, this is a powerful person, which also makes
- 30:35Speaker 1: me go back to like, so why did you portray
- 30:37Speaker 1: her like that?
- 30:38Speaker 2: But I don't know.
- 30:41Speaker 1: When we talked about music and photography, characters, pacing, pacing
- 30:46Speaker 1: and writing your.
- 30:47Speaker 4: Thoughts, uh, I think that's back to my whole Like
- 30:52Speaker 4: the first half felt like a different movie to me.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I felt disjointed. I think the film absolutely needed to
- 31:00Speaker 3: but like twenty five minutes like Shave twenty five minutes
- 31:02Speaker 3: in the movie off. It was really long. And we
- 31:06Speaker 3: talked about this, like, I'm a Nolan fanatic.
- 31:08Speaker 4: I can sit through a three hour movie. I can
- 31:10Speaker 4: sit through multiple times. I watched the Dark Knight trilogy
- 31:13Speaker 4: three times each in Imax, like even though when they
- 31:17Speaker 4: had the marathon, I saw all three in one day
- 31:21Speaker 4: in Imax. I can sit through long movies. I just
- 31:24Speaker 4: think for me, it felt like you know when you
- 31:27Speaker 4: feel like all right, it's just the end is just
- 31:28Speaker 4: the climax, is the movie over? There were so many
- 31:31Speaker 4: moments where like, all right, the movie's about to end.
- 31:33Speaker 4: The movie's about to end, and then we're like, wait
- 31:34Speaker 4: a second, Nope, the whole new thing just popped off
- 31:37Speaker 4: and we're like wait what.
- 31:39Speaker 1: Yes, it was a lot of false stops where I'm
- 31:41Speaker 1: just like, all right, and no it's a new scene. Okay, great,
- 31:45Speaker 1: and oh no, we're still going right, I.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Listen, the pacing was just this was more than the marathon.
- 31:53Speaker 1: This is just like, bruh, y'all, y'all dragging it now.
- 31:56Speaker 1: And I will say, like that last hour, I looked
- 32:00Speaker 1: at my and I wasn't being funny. I dead ass
- 32:02Speaker 1: looked at my watch and I looked at naughty and
- 32:04Speaker 1: I said bruh, like and.
- 32:06Speaker 2: She just laugh because she knew. She already knew.
- 32:08Speaker 1: But I was just like, okay, I just wrap it up,
- 32:11Speaker 1: like I get it, Like, where else is this going?
- 32:14Speaker 1: So it to your point? Shit, I say, a whole
- 32:17Speaker 1: fucking thirty five forty minutes. It could have been gone. Honestly,
- 32:21Speaker 1: the last fifty.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Could have been gone. Just keep it a cool two hours,
- 32:24Speaker 2: because my god, Like but.
- 32:28Speaker 1: And this is why I think there was some d
- 32:30Speaker 1: writing when it comes to this director, because I understand
- 32:32Speaker 1: he's the legendary director and all this other stuff.
- 32:34Speaker 2: But it's also just like you kind of just.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Let him do whatever the fuck you want, like for
- 32:38Speaker 1: as long as he wanted no real true editing. It's
- 32:40Speaker 1: kind of just like I just throw all them season there,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and I know people are gonna feel differently. Some people
- 32:44Speaker 1: are gonna be like, nah, I needed to be in that.
- 32:47Speaker 1: I needed to stay there.
- 32:48Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 32:49Speaker 1: I was ready to go because I was just like,
- 32:52Speaker 1: you've shown me everything, you know. There wasn't any more surprises,
- 32:56Speaker 1: if you will, in terms of characterizations, in terms of yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 1: there was story narrative surprises, but there wasn't for me,
- 33:04Speaker 1: there wasn't nothing else that was just like, okay, you
- 33:06Speaker 1: should should still be here to the end.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I was just like, all right, I'm out to dip.
- 33:11Speaker 4: What has me curious, too, is that the film is
- 33:14Speaker 4: loosely based on I think it was Thomas Pension.
- 33:17Speaker 3: I'm probably butchering thomas.
- 33:21Speaker 4: Novel Inland, and supposedly he took Anderson took ideas like
- 33:27Speaker 4: short story ideas from it. So I'm just imagining, how.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Is this film a bunch of short stories put together
- 33:34Speaker 2: three hours?
- 33:35Speaker 4: Like wait, I'm still I want to go into into
- 33:39Speaker 4: that novel to kind of see what he pulled from it,
- 33:42Speaker 4: to understand the whole thing of why this twenty years.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Is this film a bunch of short stories for together,
- 33:48Speaker 1: which would explain like the abrupt change between certain things.
- 33:51Speaker 2: Sometimes that's what I'm.
- 33:53Speaker 3: Trying to understand. But I want to dig into that more.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Okay, Yeah, that's a good point, thank you. And I
- 33:59Speaker 2: would have to. I have to also read the novel.
- 34:01Speaker 1: And I do appreciate if a movie can get me
- 34:03Speaker 1: to read the you know, the source material or whatever
- 34:06Speaker 1: is inspired because it is inspired by so I think
- 34:09Speaker 1: that's where something. But the length, my god, uh, the dialogue,
- 34:14Speaker 1: like I said, it's it's it's meant to be a commedist.
- 34:17Speaker 1: People saying silly shit all throughout. It also nonsensical shit
- 34:20Speaker 1: at times. We did mention, you know, at the very beginning,
- 34:24Speaker 1: there's a very revolutionary act that's done and then it's like, all.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Right, now let's have sex.
- 34:30Speaker 1: It was just like it's just like it's kind of
- 34:31Speaker 1: out of place, Like I just think you're meant to
- 34:35Speaker 1: be the crazy one, You're meant to be the out
- 34:36Speaker 1: there wild child. But it was just like but you're
- 34:40Speaker 1: also smarter than that, so I don't it was disjointed
- 34:43Speaker 1: in that way. What do we Oh, there wasn't any
- 34:48Speaker 1: like effects per se, because it's not that type of film.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I mean, you know, like I said, it's violent, it
- 34:54Speaker 2: can be violent, it wasn't. It wasn't too bad on
- 34:57Speaker 2: like the blood and stuff like that.
- 34:58Speaker 1: So like I know, sometimes people ask about that, like
- 35:00Speaker 1: there's a lot of blood, Is it gory?
- 35:01Speaker 2: Not really.
- 35:02Speaker 1: There's a couple of scenes with that, but it's nothing
- 35:04Speaker 1: that there's nothing too wild, like, so don't worry about that.
- 35:07Speaker 2: You're not gonna get.
- 35:07Speaker 1: Like jump scares and wow like the Boys style violence.
- 35:12Speaker 2: Like I was not saying that.
- 35:14Speaker 3: There was like one like shocking scene with Tiana.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Where that's also where the whole tone of the film
- 35:24Speaker 4: didn't make sense to me, because it was like, oh,
- 35:27Speaker 4: about to get real serious, yeah, and then like later
- 35:30Speaker 4: it's like, oh.
- 35:31Speaker 3: We're part of the Christmas Club.
- 35:32Speaker 1: Yeah, I will say, and listen, this is where you
- 35:37Speaker 1: and I were talking about, like where it comes to
- 35:39Speaker 1: where I was like, I didn't feel that it was trivializing.
- 35:42Speaker 2: Trivializing because I reached a comedy that.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Punches up in the sense of like, there is this
- 35:47Speaker 1: group of white supremacists in the film, which what they
- 35:50Speaker 1: call it the.
- 35:51Speaker 3: The Christmas Adventures.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Christmas Adventurers Club.
- 35:55Speaker 1: Okay, we get it what that's for, right, And it's
- 35:58Speaker 1: literally just like essentially going in on the stupidity of
- 36:03Speaker 1: white supremacist KKK, all them types of groups and all
- 36:06Speaker 1: the little fucking signals that they do to each other,
- 36:10Speaker 1: all the codes and all that stuff, like, because at
- 36:12Speaker 1: the end of the day, they're trying to be they
- 36:15Speaker 1: are first.
- 36:15Speaker 2: They steal from other cultures too.
- 36:18Speaker 1: They are stealing from the revolutionaries themselves again, you know,
- 36:21Speaker 1: the revolutionary talking and cold for a reason doing this
- 36:23Speaker 1: And now all of a sudden, these idiots over here
- 36:25Speaker 1: they got to come up with a little slang and
- 36:28Speaker 1: lingo and right, and because they want to feel like
- 36:32Speaker 1: they belong right and in their case, you know, they
- 36:35Speaker 1: belong to a small.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Group of people who actually control shit.
- 36:38Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:38Speaker 1: So I did like the fact that from a punch
- 36:42Speaker 1: up perspective that the movie reflected on those people like,
- 36:46Speaker 1: you know, this is a group of clowns, which is
- 36:49Speaker 1: how all those types of hate groups should be portrayed.
- 36:54Speaker 2: Yep, clowns.
- 36:56Speaker 1: So I was good with that, what else about this
- 37:00Speaker 1: film that we didn't talk about every messed that you
- 37:02Speaker 1: want to mention?
- 37:02Speaker 4: It also around like the whole immigration aspect, and like
- 37:07Speaker 4: today's political climate. I think it did a really poor
- 37:10Speaker 4: job on creating any.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Conversation about what's happening.
- 37:15Speaker 4: I feel like if we're gonna use that as like
- 37:17Speaker 4: a focal point, it should at least create some sort
- 37:20Speaker 4: of conversation, Like the way people are talking about this
- 37:23Speaker 4: is the greatest movie I've seen. I'm sorry your capin
- 37:25Speaker 4: like it's it's.
- 37:26Speaker 3: A fun movie.
- 37:27Speaker 4: I like it, but I don't think it's gonna be
- 37:30Speaker 4: talked about in ten years. And it didn't do anything
- 37:33Speaker 4: for me in terms of creating bigger conversations. So I
- 37:36Speaker 4: think people are making it bigger than what it is.
- 37:40Speaker 3: It's a fun time, but it did not.
- 37:43Speaker 4: The only thing I did like, which is back to
- 37:45Speaker 4: the whole focus on like showing both sides, I guess
- 37:50Speaker 4: is where they show like the instigators with the Molotov.
- 37:53Speaker 1: Yes, you show how to instigators infiltrate the groups that
- 37:57Speaker 1: are trying to do good, trying to do the change that, but.
- 38:00Speaker 4: They still did nothing to create a conversation. And like
- 38:03Speaker 4: the immigrants like essentially played no part in their own
- 38:06Speaker 4: movie aside from.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Yes, yes, yes, you great points. And that's what's when
- 38:15Speaker 1: I say the conundrum of this film, Like that's like
- 38:18Speaker 1: for me because and I mean because of you as well,
- 38:20Speaker 1: but you because you were expressing as such. But for me,
- 38:23Speaker 1: like that's all I could think about. I was just like,
- 38:26Speaker 1: like the film opens with that, right with and the
- 38:29Speaker 1: majority of the film is all the whole film, to
- 38:33Speaker 1: various levels, is dealing about with immigration and and the
- 38:37Speaker 1: people that effect and that's all I and yes, this
- 38:40Speaker 1: is the.
- 38:42Speaker 2: Current climate we're in.
- 38:43Speaker 1: But I was just even in respect of that, I
- 38:46Speaker 1: was thinking that like every time they showed certain scenes,
- 38:48Speaker 1: they showed immigrant.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Families trying to move around.
- 38:51Speaker 1: Try to get to safety, try like where they had
- 38:54Speaker 1: to live, where they was hiding, what they were doing,
- 38:56Speaker 1: what they were trying to do to keep together, Like
- 39:00Speaker 1: that's all I could think about, Like the what you mentioned,
- 39:03Speaker 1: like they didn't share any space for that conversation because
- 39:06Speaker 1: I understand that's not what the movie was about for Paul,
- 39:10Speaker 1: But that's all I can think about my head, like damn,
- 39:14Speaker 1: like do y'all see, like are y'all seeing what I'm
- 39:15Speaker 1: seeing as I was sitting there, like everybody's kicking, and
- 39:18Speaker 1: I'm like, do y'all see what I see?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Like?
- 39:20Speaker 1: And I don't know like whether or not like Paul's approach,
- 39:24Speaker 1: like he was just he was like, I'm kind of
- 39:26Speaker 1: like maybe for all we know, he's sitting there like, yeah,
- 39:27Speaker 1: you know, I was trying to show y'all what it
- 39:29Speaker 1: really be people be going through. And I'm just like, well,
- 39:31Speaker 1: people get that because all I heard your point was like,
- 39:35Speaker 1: oh I was I was that that movie was funny, right,
- 39:38Speaker 1: But I'm just like, did any of the other.
- 39:40Speaker 2: Parts hit you at all? Did did well?
- 39:43Speaker 1: You remember any of that part? And I just it's
- 39:46Speaker 1: just varying degrees of success, I think when it comes
- 39:49Speaker 1: to understanding the point, because I do think there were
- 39:53Speaker 1: potentially some real true points there that just ended up
- 39:57Speaker 1: a lot of people. Not all, but a lot of
- 39:58Speaker 1: people will just miss it completely. It'll go right over
- 40:01Speaker 1: their heads. And that's a shame because there's there's so
- 40:05Speaker 1: much that could be taken away from this film in
- 40:07Speaker 1: that way that you describe about really opening up that conversation,
- 40:11Speaker 1: expanding conversation, but didn't happen.
- 40:14Speaker 4: That's why I wish Tiana was painted differently, like she
- 40:17Speaker 4: still could have been the crazy like sex addict and
- 40:20Speaker 4: like super empowering at the same time. Like I just
- 40:23Speaker 4: feel like she was very like one way when she
- 40:26Speaker 4: should have been like the hero of the movie.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I feel you on that.
- 40:32Speaker 1: Okay, So I think we touched on all the points
- 40:36Speaker 1: with that said, what would you rate this film? You
- 40:39Speaker 1: want to give a letter grade or score between? Now,
- 40:41Speaker 1: let's you have a letter grade first, and then tell
- 40:43Speaker 1: me why. M I usually do number, but new numbers. Okay,
- 40:48Speaker 1: do one to ten, one to five, what you want.
- 40:51Speaker 1: I'm gonna say seven, seven out of ten, okay, all right,
- 40:56Speaker 1: And for all the reasons you mentioned, is there anything
- 40:59Speaker 1: particular that just brought it down from a perfect ten?
- 41:02Speaker 1: Because these people out there, these other quids are giving
- 41:04Speaker 1: it a perfect ten.
- 41:04Speaker 2: I had it. Yeah when we watched, we watched it
- 41:07Speaker 2: got a ninety seven percent ratio Rotten Tomatoes.
- 41:10Speaker 3: What what did y'all watch?
- 41:11Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Like I said, like, I'm gonna forget about
- 41:14Speaker 4: this movie.
- 41:15Speaker 3: I don't think this is a movie where I'm going
- 41:16Speaker 3: to be like, do you remember that Leo movie? Oh
- 41:19Speaker 3: my god, Like I'm not gonna.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Have it on my wall like this right, Okay, yeah,
- 41:25Speaker 4: it's not Oscar.
- 41:25Speaker 3: Worthy for nobody for me.
- 41:27Speaker 1: I'm sorry, No, these people are really like when I say,
- 41:30Speaker 1: these people talk about critics like they really the greatest
- 41:34Speaker 1: movie ever, and I'm just like no.
- 41:35Speaker 3: I'm like Sinners was the best movie of the year.
- 41:38Speaker 4: That part, that part period, I wrote out like a
- 41:40Speaker 4: novel about Sinners.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And I saw that, like I saw that whole four times.
- 41:45Speaker 1: That was like a whole month of coverage, Like, yeah,
- 41:49Speaker 1: I would rate I'll use your number scale. I think
- 41:54Speaker 1: I would probably also rated the seven, like I feel
- 41:56Speaker 1: like that's that apply the issues I had while also
- 42:03Speaker 1: being true to the fact that I did think it
- 42:05Speaker 1: was cool, like I did think it was fun at
- 42:08Speaker 1: a lot of points. I did think shit was funny
- 42:11Speaker 1: sometimes too, But I had some also major issues, particularly
- 42:16Speaker 1: with the black women characters, and just again that overall
- 42:20Speaker 1: idea that it kind of felt like they trivialized revolution
- 42:24Speaker 1: and the fight for freedom, like and especially in how
- 42:27Speaker 1: Shit Is Today.
- 42:28Speaker 3: I was like, right now today, I was just like.
- 42:31Speaker 1: That Shit's not funny to me, Like niggas are dying
- 42:34Speaker 1: so for this, So whatever that said, I appreciate you
