- 0:00Hi everybody. Welcome back to the Elon Musk
- 0:03podcast. Today we're going to be talking
- 0:06about Neuralink and its quest to mesh the human brain with
- 0:11cutting edge technology. Now imagine having a gadget no
- 0:15bigger than a coin nestled comfortably in your skull,
- 0:19transforming your thoughts into commands for a digital device.
- 0:23Neuralink, founded by Musk in 2016, is pushing the envelope
- 0:26with the device that could revolutionize how we interact
- 0:29with technology and offer New Hope for individuals with severe
- 0:33neurological conditions like Parkinson's disease.
- 0:36And the idea is to implant this device, which Musk as compared
- 0:40to a high tech fitness tracker for your brain, into humans,
- 0:44starting with a select few to prove its safety and
- 0:47effectiveness. But it hasn't been all smooth
- 0:51sailing so far. There's a lot of enthusiasm
- 0:53right now, yet also hurdles to overcome, from rigorous FDA
- 0:57processes to the sheer boldness of the operation itself.
- 1:01Now this is an ambitious plan and Elon Musk and Neuralink are
- 1:06going to push through this. And they have had thousands of
- 1:10people interested in this process.
- 1:13These are prospective patients, and the FDA recently gave it a
- 1:17green light to perform additional implant trials in
- 1:202024 without an evaluation period.
- 1:24Now the company Neuralink estimates that each implant
- 1:27surgery will be about $10,500, including exams, parts and
- 1:32labor, and then it will charge insurers about $40,000.
- 1:37And it forecasts annual revenue as high as $100 million in about
- 1:435 years. Now Neuralink says that it plans
- 1:46to perform 11 surgeries in 20/24/27 in 2025 and 79 in 2026.
- 1:55Then in 2027 it's going to ramp up significantly to 499
- 2:01surgeries and then by 20-30, twenty 2204 surgeries.
- 2:07And this is according to documents provided to investors
- 2:12now, Neuralink's vision is huge. A future where our thoughts
- 2:17could control the digital realm, where the barriers between the
- 2:21mind and machines are blurred. It's not just your cell phone in
- 2:24your hand anymore or in your pocket.
- 2:25Whatever you think happens on the screen, it's like something
- 2:29straight out of science fiction. Well, it's close to becoming
- 2:32someone's reality next year, and thousands have already raised
- 2:36their hands, ready to go, eager to be among the first to try out
- 2:38Neuralinks brain implant. The company's plan is huge, and
- 2:42the interest in Neuralink's project isn't just from
- 2:45potential patients though. The entire tech and medical
- 2:49communities are keeping an eye on Neuralink.
- 2:52They want to invest and they want to make money.
- 2:54And after an initial set back with the FDA, they've been
- 2:57greenlit. And these human trials has
- 3:00sparked A mixture of excitement and caution.
- 3:03Neuralink held Neuralink has laid out its criteria for
- 3:07participants specifically looking for individuals with
- 3:09severe mobility impairments. But it's not just about
- 3:13improving health, it's about pushing human potential as well
- 3:17for future patients. And the procedure to implant
- 3:20this device is as intricate as the tech that's inside of it.
- 3:24It's not just for the faint of heart.
- 3:26A piece of your skull is temporarily removed to allow a
- 3:30robot precise to a level that's hard to fathom to insert super
- 3:35thin threads into your brain. And these threads are the
- 3:38conduits through which the brain will communicate with the
- 3:41outside world. And when the surgery is
- 3:43complete, the device takes the place of the bone that was
- 3:46removed. It's high stakes, high
- 3:49precision, and this is an immense challenge that Neuralink
- 3:53is taking on. But there's more than technology
- 3:56and proficiency here. Musk's track record of pushing
- 3:59the envelope and smashing through the perceived ceiling.
- 4:03Tesla and SpaceX, it's well known.
- 4:05Yet with Neuralink, the stakes are even higher.
- 4:08There's no room for the trial and error approach that's often
- 4:11possible than other tech ventures talking about the human
- 4:14brain, people's skulls. And there's a need for speed
- 4:17driven by competition in Musk's own sense of urgency.
- 4:21But they have to be absolutely precise with every single
- 4:27motion. With this now, Musk's urgency
- 4:30isn't arbitrary, though. In the background, competitors
- 4:33are moving forward and moving fast.
- 4:35With companies like Synchron already conducting human trials,
- 4:39Musk is candid about the competitive pressure, stressing
- 4:42the need for Neuralink to move swiftly to stay in the game.
- 4:45It's a race against time and against the progress of AI,
- 4:48which Musk's believe could pose risks if not matched by
- 4:51advancements in human cognition. But this isn't just about
- 4:54keeping up. It's about leadership and vision
- 4:58in a field that's rapidly expanding.
- 5:00And Neuralink's goal isn't to just create another medical
- 5:03device. It's a leapfrog.
- 5:05Over decades of more cautious progress to redefine the
- 5:08relationship between humans and technology, and the company has
- 5:12gained a level of attention and funding.
- 5:14It's unprecedented for a human computer interface venture,
- 5:18reshaping the entire industry's trajectory.
- 5:22Now I'm going to do a little side note here.
- 5:25I don't think I'd be OK with this as some sort of device
- 5:30where I can communicate with another device.
- 5:32I'm OK using my phone right now, but think about it for a minute.
- 5:37Would you get a piece of your skull removed and an implant in
- 5:41your brain to just be more active on the social media or,
- 5:46you know, texting your friends without actually texting with
- 5:48your thumbs? Think about that for a moment.
- 5:51That's what this could offer people in the future.
- 5:53It could also benefit a lot of people medically and could help
- 5:59them overcome physical challenges.
- 6:01So This is why it's going to be a great technology for those
- 6:04people now, neurally, it's promising and it goes beyond
- 6:08helping individuals with paralysis that were other motor
- 6:11function impairments. The broader goal is to expand
- 6:14human capabilities and to unlock potential.
- 6:17That's been the realm of fiction until now, and the potential
- 6:20applications are kind of crazy, from advanced communication
- 6:23possibilities for those who can't speak to new levels of
- 6:27interaction with the digital world.
- 6:29So if you can't speak and you have no way to communicate, but
- 6:33this device could allow you to speak with other people because
- 6:36you could still think and those thoughts of communication could
- 6:40come through and you could speak with other people, that seems
- 6:44like a potential game changer for those people.
- 6:47And the path to this future is paved with these giant marvels.
- 6:51The implant itself is miniature and powerful.
- 6:55It's not just the brain, though. Neurolink is exploring spinal
- 6:58implants to restore movement, and this is going to be an
- 7:01overall approach for the company.
- 7:03It's not just going to be the one device.
- 7:05The vision is to move beyond simple tasks to more complex
- 7:09interactions, with Musk hinting at capabilities like telepathy
- 7:13or interaction with AI in unprecedented ways.
- 7:17So here we are, on the edge of a new era between humans and
- 7:22machines. Again, sort of like what the
- 7:24cell phone did before. Neuralink's path is going to be
- 7:27challenging, but it's also lined with the promise of the future
- 7:30that could redefine what it means to be a human being.
