- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday.
- 0:14It is the 12th of December. And yeah, I know I've, I've kind
- 0:18of lost a little bit of my credibility when it comes to
- 0:20knowing what date it is, seeing as I got the date wrong on
- 0:23Monday. I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
- 0:25It's all just too late to go back and change it now isn't it?
- 0:28But ah, well, that's what you get.
- 0:30I'm not an AI powered bot, I'm just a dude and people make
- 0:34mistakes. So at least we know today is
- 0:37actually the 12th, or if you're listening to it on a different
- 0:41day. It's all a bit academic, isn't
- 0:42it? But the 12th of December is
- 0:44actually a brilliant day because the 12th of December is the
- 0:48International Day of Neutrality. This is a day when the world
- 0:52recognises those parts of the world that have dedicated
- 0:56themselves to remaining neutral territory.
- 0:58I didn't realise this, but Switzerland actually in 1815,
- 1:03all that time ago, dedicated themselves and were permanently
- 1:07deemed a neutral state that would never take sides in a war.
- 1:12Amazing. I did not realise that that was
- 1:14a permanent status developed so long ago.
- 1:17But there you have it, a day of neutrality to celebrate and
- 1:21recognise the places that have dedicated themselves to always
- 1:25remaining not in one camp or another, but in the centre of
- 1:29things happening. So today I'm going to chop
- 1:31something with my Swiss Army knife and I'm going to eat some
- 1:34Swiss chocolate. Not quite sure how else I can
- 1:37celebrate Neutrality Day. Maybe not taking sides, but I
- 1:41don't need to. There you go.
- 1:43Having said all that, today is definitely not neutral in our
- 1:47Bible reading. This is the day that Paul comes
- 1:50before Felix the governor, and he states his case not
- 1:54neutrally, but very, very much with his agenda of sharing the
- 1:59good news about Jesus. So let us join him and hear what
- 2:03he has to say as we read together Acts chapter 24.
- 2:16Five days later, Ananias, the high priest arrived with some of
- 2:21the Jewish elders and the lawyer Turtleis to present their case
- 2:25against Paul to the governor. When Paul came in, Turtleis
- 2:30presented the charges against Paul in the following address to
- 2:34the governor. You have long provided a long
- 2:38period of peace for us Jews and with foresight have enacted
- 2:42reforms for us. For all of this, Your
- 2:45Excellency, we are very grateful to you.
- 2:50But I don't want to bore you, so please give me your attention
- 2:54for only a moment. We have found this man to be a
- 2:58troublemaker who is constantly stirring up riots amongst the
- 3:03Jews all over the world. He is a a ringleader of the cult
- 3:09known as the Nazarenes. Furthermore, he was trying to
- 3:13desecrate the temple when we arrested him.
- 3:16You can find out the truth of our accusations by examining him
- 3:20yourself. Then the other Jews chimed in
- 3:24declaring that everything Turtle has said was true.
- 3:28The governor then motioned for Paul to speak.
- 3:31Paul said. I know, Sir, that you have been
- 3:36a judge of Jewish affairs for many years, so I gladly present
- 3:41my defence before you. You can quickly discover that I
- 3:45arrived in Jerusalem no more than 12 days ago to worship at
- 3:50the Temple. My accusers never found me
- 3:53arguing with anyone in the Temple, nor stirring up a riot
- 3:57in any synagogue or on the streets of the city.
- 4:01These men cannot prove the things they accuse me of doing,
- 4:06but I admit that I follow the way which they call a cult.
- 4:12I worship the God of our ancestors, and I firmly believe
- 4:17the Jewish law and everything written in the prophets.
- 4:21I have the same hope in God that these men have, that He will
- 4:25raise both the righteous and the unrighteous.
- 4:29Because of this, I always try to maintain a clear conscience
- 4:34before God and all people. After several years away, I
- 4:40returned to Jerusalem with money to aid my people and to offer
- 4:44sacrifices to God. My accusers saw me in the temple
- 4:49as I was completing a purification ceremony.
- 4:52There was no crowd around me and no rioting, but some Jews from
- 4:57the province of Asia were there and they ought to be here to
- 5:01bring charges if they have anything against me.
- 5:05Ask these men here what crime the Jewish High Council found me
- 5:09guilty of, except for the one time I shouted out I am on trial
- 5:14before you today because I believe in the resurrection of
- 5:17the dead. At that point, Felix, who was
- 5:21quite familiar with the way, adjourned the hearing and said
- 5:25wait until Lyceus, the Garrison commander, arrives, then I will
- 5:32decide the case. He ordered an officer to keep
- 5:36Paul in custody but to give him some freedom and allow his
- 5:40friends to visit him and take care of his needs.
- 5:45A few days later, Felix came back with his wife Drusilla, who
- 5:49was Jewish, sending for Paul. They listened as he told them
- 5:54about faith in Christ Jesus. As he reasoned with them about
- 5:58righteousness and self control and the coming day of judgement.
- 6:03Felix became frightened. Go away for now, he replied.
- 6:08When it is more convenient, I'll call for you again.
- 6:13He also hoped that Paul would bribe him, so he sent for him
- 6:17quite often and talked with him. After two years went by in this
- 6:23way, Felix was succeeded by Porsches Festus, and because
- 6:28Felix wanted to gain favour with the Jewish people, he left Paul
- 6:34in prison. Jesus, you know just as well as
- 6:46us that life takes its twists and its turns and that sometimes
- 6:51we scratch our heads and we think, how, Lord, how can this
- 6:55be part of your plan for my life?
- 6:59Lord, I pray that you just give us that peace that you have
- 7:02promised us that surpasses all understanding when we rest our
- 7:07hearts in you and in your plans for us and our lives and your
- 7:11world. Lord, we know that You have our
- 7:16eternal future firmly in Your grasp, and we know that You have
- 7:21our best interests at heart because You love us more than
- 7:25life itself. So we thank You for holding us
- 7:30in the palm of Your hand, and we pray that You bolster our faith
- 7:36and give us Your peace as we endure whatever it is that life
- 7:40throws at us, knowing that we serve You and that in Your
- 7:45hands, everything will come to Your conclusion in Your timing,
- 7:50even though we won't understand it.
- 7:53So we submit to Your rule and your kingship and pray all of
- 7:58this in your holy and mighty name, Jesus, Amen.
