- 1:52SPEAKER_08: Everybody! Unfortunately, Mikey couldn't be with us this evening due to the fact that he got married to a new job.
- 2:03SPEAKER_08: So we'll just leave that there.
- 2:05SPEAKER_08: But he will be sorely missed.
- 2:07SPEAKER_08: And I do mean sore.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: He will be part of the punch and bag of this evening's festivities, I'm sure.
- 2:13SPEAKER_09: Yet again.
- 2:16SPEAKER_08: I've got a horseshoe in my glove.
- 2:19SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 2:20SPEAKER_08: If you haven't seen Rocky, you don't know what I'm talking about.
- 2:22SPEAKER_08: Go watch it.
- 2:24SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 2:24SPEAKER_08: So today's topic is gonna be about what's on the inside that counts, and that is model car interiors.
- 2:31SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 2:32SPEAKER_05: Yes.
- 2:33SPEAKER_08: Right, yes.
- 2:34SPEAKER_08: Here's a tip top tip.
- 2:35SPEAKER_08: If you want to do a quick and easy model car interior, just paint the whole thing flat black and you're done.
- 2:41SPEAKER_08: Next topic.
- 2:43SPEAKER_10: I'm just kidding.
- 2:44SPEAKER_08: Just kidding.
- 2:45SPEAKER_08: We got through that quicker than expected.
- 2:47SPEAKER_08: What the fuck?
- 2:48SPEAKER_08: That went so fast.
- 2:49SPEAKER_08: Roll credits.
- 2:51SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 2:52SPEAKER_08: Uh but now, Jody, you said you have a couple of things you'd like to to uh broach with this.
- 2:58SPEAKER_08: So what why don't you go ahead and lead off?
- 3:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so the suggestion came through the um Monocar Mania Facebook page.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Jeremy Lynn, supporter of the uh the channel here, and I see him over on the Blue Ox model shop quite a bit too, kind of breached the uh breach the topic, which I think is a good topic.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: So, you know, I'm just getting off this um 69 Cobra Jet Mustang build and the Skyline build both.
- 3:20SPEAKER_02: I spent a fair amount of time and the interior detail of those things, so it's a good one to kind of pull out by itself, I think.
- 3:26SPEAKER_02: I've got a pile of stuff here.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Of course, this is a uh audio podcast, but I've got a bunch of visuals to show my friends here on the dais as we work our way through this.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, let's talk about basics maybe first.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: So, one of the things that we've talked about before and choosing colors of models, right?
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: Exterior color, interior color, how they play off each other, right?
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: I think at a minimum, if you've got a tmiya kit that's got a high level of interior detail, you know, do you want to paint that a dark color where that detail is lost?
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Or is it beneficial to paint it a lighter color to uh accentuate the interior itself, you know?
- 4:01SPEAKER_02: So that's kind of that's kind of question one.
- 4:04SPEAKER_02: Surely exterior color often drives interior color, but um, I mean, what do you guys feel about contrasting colors and uh some kits are better than others, right?
- 4:14SPEAKER_02: To me, a kit usually they're really nice, good quality.
- 4:17SPEAKER_02: Early AMT kits, no offense to early AMT, but probably less detail on the interior.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: So uh what about colors?
- 4:25SPEAKER_07: Well, first off, don't call me Shirley, and second of all, I agree with you.
- 4:30SPEAKER_07: I do.
- 4:31SPEAKER_07: Uh, and I actually learned a valuable lesson from you on that.
- 4:35SPEAKER_07: Um, on one of the past models I built.
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: Lighter colors are definitely better for bringing out the detail.
- 4:40SPEAKER_07: You can definitely see them better, even though you like myself, I thought, but I like black interiors in my cars.
- 4:47SPEAKER_07: Well, in real life, that's cool, right?
- 4:50SPEAKER_07: Because it's real life, but when it gets down to the you know, 125th, 124th scale, if you're building your model so that the details that you put into the interior are easily seen and appreciated, you might want to think twice about using a dark color.
- 5:06SPEAKER_07: Just because the details get lost, it's simple.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Very, very easily.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're so they're so shaded and shadowed anyway, because of it's just small scale, right?
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I mean, you got small window openings, so depending on lighting in a venue, if you're at a show, uh photographing the model, it's easy for that stuff to get lost, especially with a uh dark color, and if you have detail that's shallow anyway, or not really that pronounced, right?
- 5:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:35SPEAKER_08: Well, that's when you have to start reinforcing your shadows and trying to bring out your highlights some.
- 5:40SPEAKER_08: Um, not with your hair.
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: We don't we don't do that anymore.
- 5:44SPEAKER_08: But the idea of dry brushing comes to mind.
- 5:47SPEAKER_08: I think the figure painting world sort of blends a lot with doing model car interiors.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: What do you think, Justin?
- 5:54SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 5:55SPEAKER_06: I was actually waiting to bring that uh that point in.
- 5:59SPEAKER_06: In the figure world, you don't ever want to use pure black unless it's your deepest, deepest shadow.
- 6:05SPEAKER_06: So, yeah, you might like a black interior on your car, but that doesn't mean it needs to be black.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: You can actually paint that interior a dark gray and shade things with black or like a rubber black or a NATO black, where something that's not pure vanta black, you're gonna lose all the shit that you want to show off.
- 6:25SPEAKER_06: So go for black, but only use actual black as your darkest shades.
- 6:31SPEAKER_06: Uh, same goes for white.
- 6:33SPEAKER_06: The opposite, the opposite goes for white.
- 6:35SPEAKER_06: Never use pure white, use pure white for your highlights.
- 6:39SPEAKER_06: And then, you know, tone down your white with whatever whatever color you want to accentuate in the, you know, so so if you have a blue car, maybe mix in just a touch of blue to your white, and then some dectan just to tone down the white, so the white's not as as vivid and bright, and then just use the pure white just for highlights.
- 6:59SPEAKER_06: Um, but that's that's kind of how it goes in the figure world.
- 7:03SPEAKER_06: Never use pure black, even even in the aircraft modeling world.
- 7:07SPEAKER_06: I just picked up a book from Luft Shop, Luftraum 72, all about stealth aircraft, and there's an entire chapter in there about the F-117 Nighthawk.
- 7:17SPEAKER_06: That's not painted straight black.
- 7:18SPEAKER_06: That model that he has in there is not painted straight black, it's actually modeled with grays and you know, all sorts of highlights and stuff.
- 7:26SPEAKER_06: Because if it was straight black, it's boring.
- 7:28SPEAKER_06: You start missing details and stuff.
- 7:30SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 7:31SPEAKER_08: I I can uh I'd like to share a quick story about aircraft to illustrate what Justin's talking about.
- 7:36SPEAKER_08: One of my favorite aircraft is the P61 Black Model, which is a night fighter in World War II, primarily in the uh European theater and then subsequently in the Japanese theater.
- 7:46SPEAKER_08: Anyway, I digress.
- 7:48SPEAKER_08: So when they were trying to come up with the color for the aircraft, they decided to go with flat black because they thought flat black was you know the night sky.
- 7:57SPEAKER_08: Well, they did some tests and they found out that flat black just makes a hole in the sky, so it's blot outs it blots out the stars or whatever else is uh maybe in the background of the aircraft.
- 8:09SPEAKER_08: So, like yeah, shoot at the hole.
- 8:14SPEAKER_08: So they came up with gloss black, and the gloss black does a little more reflectivity to it and somehow hit it better.
- 8:20SPEAKER_08: So it's just crazy to think about, anyway.
- 8:23SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: Oddly enough, I think we talked about that P61 recently on one of the podcasts.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: I can't remember, but my last trip to Hobby Emporium.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: I actually bought one.
- 8:32SPEAKER_07: Did you buy one?
- 8:34SPEAKER_07: I did.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: I bought the revelka.
- 8:36SPEAKER_07: You know what's you know what's funny is all you guys listening on this podcast really can't see it, but my friends here can't see it either.
- 8:45SPEAKER_07: I have a P61 hanging from the ceiling right there.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: Oh no kidding.
- 8:49SPEAKER_07: That is one of my favorite World War II aircrafts.
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 8:54SPEAKER_07: And I built that years and years ago, and it's a complete just thrown-together pile of garbage that deserves to be covered in dust hanging from my ceiling.
- 9:04SPEAKER_07: But I very much want to build another one because I love that airplane.
- 9:09SPEAKER_07: Get the Great Wall Hobby Kit.
- 9:11SPEAKER_07: Get the Great Wall Hobby Kit, huh?
- 9:13SPEAKER_06: That's good to know.
- 9:14SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna write that down right now.
- 9:16SPEAKER_06: Well, real quick, the Revell P61 is not really a bad, bad kit.
- 9:22SPEAKER_06: The build of the kit itself is all right.
- 9:24SPEAKER_06: Really, where the problem comes in is the fit of the canopy.
- 9:27SPEAKER_06: That's where you're gonna have your biggest problems.
- 9:29SPEAKER_06: You're gonna have to use some shims and and all sorts of stuff.
- 9:33SPEAKER_06: But the rest of the build builds up really nicely.
- 9:35SPEAKER_06: Yeah, so it's good too.
- 9:37SPEAKER_06: Now back to the cars.
- 9:38SPEAKER_08: Swearing might help too.
- 9:39SPEAKER_08: Swarting might help.
- 9:40SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 9:40SPEAKER_08: Uh fair enough.
- 9:41SPEAKER_08: Anyway, back to the cars.
- 9:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: It's perfect.
- 9:50SPEAKER_02: So um interior color surely does, and to to Justin's end, um, if you were to look at a real car interior, you know, depending on the sun, right?
- 9:59SPEAKER_02: If it's vinyl and sun's beating on it, it's not necessarily dark black, it's gray, right?
- 10:06SPEAKER_02: I think it's all in the uh in the artist, right, that's doing the interior.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: But I really feel that um accentuating that, you know, not going too dark, you know, black interior in a black car, yeah, it looks good, but it just gets lost, you know.
- 10:20SPEAKER_02: Um if you're trying to accentuate maybe the outside of the car and bring people in, and you really want to dumb down the interior, a dark interior will do that.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: But if it's an interior that has good detail in it and you want to bring that out, you know, a little bit lighter shade or using the um the post shading, you know, maybe um dark shadowing really is beneficial to kind of to kind of pull that out and really make it pop, you know.
- 10:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:47SPEAKER_08: Sometimes even a little bit of a panel liner cheat too, so when the seat cushions are hard to do.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I've done that in the past.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: A couple different kits that I built.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I used a kind of an oxblood red interior with just some like dark brown panel liner, you know, just makes it just pop.
- 11:02SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 11:03SPEAKER_08: How did you get the ox blood to your airbrush?
- 11:05SPEAKER_08: Did you have to thin that down a lot?
- 11:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he actually used aspirin.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, not as much as you'd think.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:13SPEAKER_07: The worst part of that whole thing was I was so tired after I gave him all that blood.
- 11:19SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Uh stop it.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: I got the perfect anyway.
- 11:25SPEAKER_08: Jesus was gonna be a fast episode, but I was wrong.
- 11:28SPEAKER_08: No, hell no.
- 11:29SPEAKER_09: We're just getting started.
- 11:31SPEAKER_09: Yeah, exactly.
- 11:32SPEAKER_02: So with color, I kind of covered that.
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: The other thing that I've really focused on quite a bit, and maybe with you guys too, we'll get your thoughts, but just the sheen of things, meaning, you know, um, a leather sheen is different than a vinyl sheen, which is different than obviously a um cloth.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, right.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: So the F100 truck I did, the blue one, right?
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: I used one color, but I used the earth brown Tamiya jar paint, and I mixed in a little bit of satin coat clear in it, which gave it a really nice leather look.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: But then I used the brown by itself at very low pressure, you know, to make it really appear more cloth than the actual leather.
- 12:16SPEAKER_02: So sheen is really a big thing because when you look at the interior of a car, I mean, you've got multiple different sheens, and again, I think that sheen or highlight, different uh clears, even just different blacks.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh a Tamiya semi-gloss acrylic sheen is different than a um a lacquer, right?
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: So just using the same color, two different types, if you will, is gonna provide different results.
- 12:42SPEAKER_02: Again, if you're trying to really, you know, accentuate, bring all that interior detail out.
- 12:47SPEAKER_02: I think that's an area that gets overlooked.
- 12:50SPEAKER_02: Again, if you're just flat blacking the whole thing and that's your goal, you're good, you know.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: But if you're trying to kind of take it the next step further, I really think that's one of the things.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, what are what what are your thoughts?
- 13:02SPEAKER_06: You're you're basically creating visual textures, yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 13:07SPEAKER_06: Because you know, you're you're creating those different sheens which replicate the the different textures that you would see in a one-to-one scale.
- 13:15SPEAKER_06: Now, at 24th scale, it's kind of you're not gonna see cloth texture compared to a vinyl texture compared to a leather texture, so you do have to make those textures by choosing your your sheen, your gloss level.
- 13:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_08: Back in the day when I was first getting back into modeling, I wanted to do one of the um 53 Corvettes from AMT, and of course, it's an open top car, so you're gonna see the interior.
- 13:38SPEAKER_08: And I wanted to do the classic uh white with red interior.
- 13:41SPEAKER_08: I used three different types of primers.
- 13:43SPEAKER_08: I used the gray primer on the seats and on the door cards.
- 13:46SPEAKER_08: I used the uh white primer on the dashboard because I believe that was the fiberglass or metal dash.
- 13:52SPEAKER_08: I can't remember if they have a metal dash, yeah.
- 13:53SPEAKER_08: They have metal dash in those, and then um the floor had black primer.
- 13:57SPEAKER_08: So when I sprayed the same color red over all three of those primers, it came out with different values because I've worked on older cars.
- 14:06SPEAKER_08: I had a 63 Corvair and it had an interior that was supposed to be tan.
- 14:10SPEAKER_08: Well, of course, it's painted metal, vinyl, and then whatever carpet's made out of back then.
- 14:16SPEAKER_08: Could be, I think it's troll or munchkin or something like that.
- 14:19SPEAKER_08: But um but uh it's all supposed to be the same color, but because they're all different types of material, they all have just like you said, different types of sheen or or color value.
- 14:31SPEAKER_08: So that was one of the tricks I did, and uh I always to this day I still think it's a good looking interior.
- 14:37SPEAKER_08: The the model's crap, but uh you know it didn't turn out very well.
- 14:39SPEAKER_08: But the interior's great, I'm very proud of that.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 14:43SPEAKER_08: But it took a little forethought to know to do the primer thing because you can't really back up from that.
- 14:48SPEAKER_08: So yeah, right.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:51SPEAKER_02: So a dash, you know, could be a little bit lighter, right?
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: If it's in if if we're adding color or you know, light, right?
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: The presence of light or the thought of light, if that's a little bit lighter and a different sheen, right?
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be more pronounced than maybe the stuff, everything out that's inside the interior.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: So color, sheen, I I think both those things are important.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: It's it's things that I try to try to utilize that and on engines too, you know.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: An engine, especially a new car, it's not all one color, you know.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, everything is a different plastic, different sheen, and um makes a big difference, I think.
- 15:29SPEAKER_02: In the overall, it's the eye's gonna look for it, you know.
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: To some, maybe it just seems like it's one color, but if you're really looking at the finer detail and you're you're you're focused on that, you are gonna see the difference between those things, which I think and it creates visual interest.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: It does.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: It does make your eye question if you're seeing things or if it really is different, yeah.
- 15:52SPEAKER_06: And that's what catches judges' eyes.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 15:55SPEAKER_02: So, what about carpet, right?
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: We we get in conversations about flocking and kind of how we do that.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: I think it's a good one.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: We can all kind of talk through our own.
- 16:04SPEAKER_05: Uh oh, uh, I'm working here, man.
- 16:07SPEAKER_05: I'm working.
- 16:08SPEAKER_05: So were we?
- 16:09SPEAKER_05: Who said his name three times?
- 16:11SPEAKER_05: God damn it.
- 16:12SPEAKER_05: We're working too.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: Where the fuck are you coming?
- 16:14SPEAKER_05: I think Chuck just told me to come in.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: Who called?
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: What's up?
- 16:17SPEAKER_05: I didn't ask you to come in.
- 16:19SPEAKER_05: Nobody no one asked me to come in the room.
- 16:21SPEAKER_05: Chuck asked me to come into the other room.
- 16:23SPEAKER_05: Chuck who?
- 16:25SPEAKER_05: Oh, you guys filming your your episode yet or no?
- 16:28SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, we're recording the episode.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: I mean, you gotta fucking add it.
- 16:32SPEAKER_08: I'm he's taking to go in the other room.
- 16:35SPEAKER_08: Thanks for adding to my workload, man.
- 16:37SPEAKER_08: What the hell?
- 16:38SPEAKER_05: My bad.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: All right, sorry, my bad.
- 16:42SPEAKER_06: We're walking here.
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: Thank you very much.
- 16:45SPEAKER_06: Good to see you, Rob.
- 16:47SPEAKER_06: So leave that in there.
- 16:52SPEAKER_08: I'm working over here.
- 16:53SPEAKER_08: I'm like, so are we?
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Chuck who that's that's chunk.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: That's like jock itch.
- 17:02SPEAKER_02: It just fucking keeps coming back and showing up and you don't want it, you know.
- 17:07SPEAKER_08: I'll take your word for it.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:10SPEAKER_02: All right, so what are we talking about?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, we're talking about uh flock.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Sorry for that uh little uh prelude there, interlude, but um get the flock out of here.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: So so so flocking, right?
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: So um let's talk about texture carp and that a little bit.
- 17:26SPEAKER_02: Sometimes if it's a dark interior, black, right?
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: It really is pointless to do it because you're not really gonna probably see it anyway.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Darker interiors, it's really hard to see it.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: If it's a lighter interior, or even if you did a black interior with maybe like a dark gray, maybe it'll be a little bit more noticeable.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: But I think we can all agree that we with best of intentions we do it, and then oftentimes you can't see it anyway, other than we know it's in there, right?
- 17:53SPEAKER_07: So well, I just did a car with a white, white and black interior, and you can see the flocking with the white, the white door cards, white seats.
- 18:01SPEAKER_06: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 18:02SPEAKER_07: You can really you can see it.
- 18:04SPEAKER_06: You can see it.
- 18:05SPEAKER_06: That's because you created contrast, and you have a light enough interior that the light doesn't just absorb that's right, yeah.
- 18:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah, at the very least, though you're right.
- 18:14SPEAKER_07: A dark interior.
- 18:15SPEAKER_07: I always if it's black, there's been a couple of cars that I've built where the package tray is flocked, and that's it.
- 18:22SPEAKER_06: Yeah, you can't see nothing because you see it through the window, yeah.
- 18:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: So there's different flocking out there, right?
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, you've got the hobby grade stuff, was it Ken's Fuzzy First, something like that?
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: You know, there's a few different manufacturers just flock it.
- 18:37SPEAKER_02: So I bought the stuff at um at Hobby Lobby, I don't think they even sell it anymore, but this it's like a two ounce.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: What are you gonna do with that?
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Well, yeah, it's two ounces.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: Look how big that is.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's literally a lifetime supply of flocking.
- 18:50SPEAKER_07: First off, I've never heard those words before.
- 18:53SPEAKER_07: Look how big it is.
- 18:54SPEAKER_07: Second of all, oh, you got enough flocking there to wait.
- 18:58SPEAKER_06: If that's two ounces, I might have a chance.
- 19:03SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 19:04SPEAKER_09: Holy cow.
- 19:07SPEAKER_07: So is that is that flocking like scale proper scale, though?
- 19:12SPEAKER_02: It's so it is.
- 19:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a little bit heavy textured, but again, if you use the uh use the tea strainer, right, and you shake it, it's gonna, it kind of breaks it up into the fine particulate that actually does work.
- 19:26SPEAKER_06: So it works really well on 70s vans.
- 19:29SPEAKER_06: It does.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: So they they offered this for a while there.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: It's five dollars for that whole big tub.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: And they had 10 different 10 different color options.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: I bought all of them.
- 19:40SPEAKER_02: And like this is a dark red.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: The nice thing about this stuff is you can you can custom mix your own color.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: So I've done that on a few.
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: And again, you guys out there in La La Land can't see this, but I save I save the um the little pudding cups because they're good mixing cups.
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: So, what I'll do is put together a couple different colors to mix the color that I want.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: So the Cobra Jet Mustang I just did, the dark blue was too dark, and the light blue was too light, or it wasn't I didn't have dark blue, it was just light blue.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: So I kept adding the um dark brown color to it to darken it up into the color that I ended up creating, which is this blue color.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: That's cool so you know.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's probably enough left in just that little cup to do probably two models, you know.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: And this stuff goes a long way, yeah.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: But again, I don't think you can get this stuff anymore.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think they discontinued or stopped carrying it, unfortunately.
- 20:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I haven't seen it actually the past couple times I've been in there because I've looked for it.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:39SPEAKER_08: I do know that if you're flocking, turn off your ceiling fan or any fans in the room because you're not gonna just flock your model, you're gonna flock the wall too.
- 20:47SPEAKER_07: Also, uh a good uh if you have to sneeze, turn away from the work.
- 20:51SPEAKER_07: Turn away from the flocking, yeah.
- 20:54SPEAKER_02: A bigger problem when you inhale.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: Well, you're gonna do both, I think.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: If you through the process of doing one, you're doing the other, yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_02: So this is really good stuff, and I know the the the tens fuzzy fur, all that stuff is all really good stuff.
- 21:10SPEAKER_02: What about our process to do it?
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: I'll start with you, Jason.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: What do you what do you typically do when you're doing the flocking?
- 21:17SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:19SPEAKER_07: So I use I don't use glue, I use paint.
- 21:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 21:23SPEAKER_07: So I use tummy uh tumia jar paint.
- 21:26SPEAKER_07: I paint, and I obviously you try to use like colors, right?
- 21:29SPEAKER_07: So I have a dark gray under gray carpet, I have black under black carpet, yeah, it and so on.
- 21:35SPEAKER_07: So I have I get a I've got a cat food comes when you buy a case of cat food, it comes in a cardboard flat.
- 21:43SPEAKER_07: So I have one of those, and I keep my flocking in in little um Tupperware tubs.
- 21:48SPEAKER_07: And I also have this tea strainer, like you do, right?
- 21:52SPEAKER_08: Oh, excellent, yeah.
- 21:53SPEAKER_08: Clamshell style, yeah.
- 21:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, so what I do is I set myself up inside that cardboard.
- 21:58SPEAKER_07: It's a it's a good size.
- 22:00SPEAKER_07: Imagine a case of soda or something like that, right?
- 22:02SPEAKER_07: The flower that comes into.
- 22:03SPEAKER_07: That makes sense.
- 22:04SPEAKER_07: Set myself up in that.
- 22:05SPEAKER_07: I keep everything I try to keep everything contained inside that cardboard.
- 22:09SPEAKER_07: I use the paint.
- 22:11SPEAKER_07: I paint a small section.
- 22:12SPEAKER_07: I I won't do like if I'm gonna do the carpet, I don't do the carpet in one like one swath.
- 22:18SPEAKER_07: I break it into like four sections because I've found that with paint it'll start to dry and then the flocking doesn't stick to it.
- 22:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, especially the tummy is stuff.
- 22:26SPEAKER_08: That's fast growing stuff.
- 22:28SPEAKER_07: Which is why I use it though, because it shake the flocking over it and I let it sit for like five minutes and then I kind of like pat it down with my finger a little bit, shake the excess off into the cardboard box, move on to my next section.
- 22:41SPEAKER_07: That's my process, but I I found that some of the like the just flocket stuff I use, it looks too fuzzy.
- 22:48SPEAKER_09: Okay.
- 22:49SPEAKER_07: It looks too fuzzy to me.
- 22:50SPEAKER_07: I I use it anyway, because it's all I have, and I'd rather have something than nothing.
- 22:55SPEAKER_07: But I've searching for an for an alternative.
- 22:58SPEAKER_07: Interesting that.
- 22:59SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_08: Have you ever tried uh embossing powder?
- 23:02SPEAKER_07: I haven't.
- 23:02SPEAKER_08: And I know I liked it.
- 23:05SPEAKER_08: I liked it a lot.
- 23:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 23:06SPEAKER_08: I just can't find it in the colors I want.
- 23:09SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 23:09SPEAKER_07: So yeah.
- 23:10SPEAKER_07: So anyway, after everything is contained in that cardboard flat, when I'm done, I can like shake it to the corner and the access goes back into the Tupperware tub.
- 23:20SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 23:20SPEAKER_07: Then I just take the the cardboard flat outside and shake it out.
- 23:24SPEAKER_07: Call it good.
- 23:24SPEAKER_07: It keeps most of the mess away from being on my desk or wherever I'm working.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: What about you, Mr.
- 23:30SPEAKER_02: BG?
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Do you uh do you have any of that stuff?
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: Do you typically do a carpet?
- 23:35SPEAKER_08: I don't usually do carpet in models uh anymore.
- 23:38SPEAKER_08: I was I was experimenting with it a while ago, trying to, you know, watch a lot of YouTube videos and such to try and get the hang of something like that.
- 23:46SPEAKER_08: Uh I was using tester's paints to do it because the enamels dry so much slower.
- 23:51SPEAKER_08: It gave me a longer working time, which apparently I need a longer working time these days.
- 23:57SPEAKER_08: My my frustration with with it was uh just getting it everywhere.
- 24:01SPEAKER_08: And it's you know, we're in a sealed room here with air conditioning and stuff like that because you know, of where we live, and just the days of having to keep cleaning up.
- 24:10SPEAKER_08: I I wasn't not smart enough to put it in a box like Jason was.
- 24:14SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 24:14SPEAKER_08: But uh I I I did like the look that it provided, but it's it was just the aftermath of the cleanup and stuff I was just facing was just I don't think it was worth it for me.
- 24:25SPEAKER_08: I did try switching to the embossing powder, which has less static electric issues, uh, because it is a powder, but I couldn't find it in the right in all the colors because you could get it in red or blue or black or gray or something like that, and that's it.
- 24:37SPEAKER_08: I did do a 65 uh 65 Mustang.
- 24:41SPEAKER_08: I did a red interior, red and white interior, and I did a red carpeted floor.
- 24:45SPEAKER_08: And what was cool was somehow the red flocking I had gotten had mixed with some uh excuse me, red embossing powder had been mixed with some black embossing powder.
- 24:55SPEAKER_08: I I don't know how that happened, but the effect that that gave on the floor was awesome.
- 25:00SPEAKER_08: So I left it.
- 25:01SPEAKER_08: I'm like, I don't know how this happened, but sweet.
- 25:06SPEAKER_08: I left it, so I was like, I like the look, I'm keeping it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_08: But nowadays I've tried doing the white glue also, right, to hold it down, but that shit will peel right back off again, and you'll have a nice, a nice carpet tub, you know, you can sit on your desk or something like that.
- 25:20SPEAKER_08: And I'm always worried about that stuff like shrinking or peeling back or something like that.
- 25:24SPEAKER_08: And uh I'm sure folks probably have not had that issue before, but it's just a concern that I have.
- 25:29SPEAKER_08: But nowadays I'm thinking about trying the embossing powder and then just putting it on as a texture and then painting it whatever color I want.
- 25:38SPEAKER_08: Because are we after the color or are we after the texture?
- 25:41SPEAKER_08: That's the question I ask myself.
- 25:43SPEAKER_08: So, yeah, so I'm actually looking forward to trying that on the next one.
- 25:47SPEAKER_06: Yeah, that's a report back, and you would save yourself money on buying all the colors, yeah, you know.
- 25:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, that was another thing too, is going to find someplace that sells Ken's fuzzy fur, but then it's like, well, what color do I want?
- 26:00SPEAKER_08: And how much you know, how much burgundy do I need to have?
- 26:04SPEAKER_08: Right, because I don't need to have a lifetime supply of it and exactly inside that container.
- 26:11SPEAKER_07: I know it looks like it looks like the steak seasoning thing you might think.
- 26:15SPEAKER_07: That's exactly what it is.
- 26:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's it's a Ken steak seasoning jar.
- 26:19SPEAKER_08: You get it like Costco, but it looks like it's full of cayenne pepper.
- 26:23SPEAKER_02: I don't want I don't want to accidentally put this up in the uh spice cabinet, that's for sure.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think chicken with that all over it would be very good, but uh no, it didn't have a good texture.
- 26:33SPEAKER_06: How much flavor to transfer?
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: It would have a lot of fiber in it, right?
- 26:38SPEAKER_06: Oh nice.
- 26:41SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 26:42SPEAKER_08: Well, yeah, I know, yeah.
- 26:43SPEAKER_08: Calling the doctor the next morning going, well, oh wait, never mind.
- 26:46SPEAKER_08: I just figured out never mind.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: I know where I went wrong.
- 26:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: What about you, Justin?
- 26:52SPEAKER_02: Do you do you get into any of that stuff?
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: I don't flock and do that.
- 26:56SPEAKER_06: No.
- 26:57SPEAKER_06: Um I I did it once or twice.
- 26:59SPEAKER_06: Honestly, I haven't been productive of a modeler to have a lot of time to experiment that.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: Like I haven't gotten that far in things lately, anyway.
- 27:08SPEAKER_06: But yeah, I mean it it's uh you know, I I'm in the in the boat where you know you buy one one jar.
- 27:15SPEAKER_06: If it comes if it's the color that you need for that particular model, great.
- 27:18SPEAKER_06: If not, hit it with some paint.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, that's fair.
- 27:22SPEAKER_08: That's your answer for everything, right?
- 27:27SPEAKER_08: On carpeting, uh, I did try a technique where I learned from the armor guys to do like texturing for the hull of a tank or something like that, where you just use Timmy extra thin and then stipple it on there with a stiff brush.
- 27:38SPEAKER_06: I was gonna say, I don't know how many tanks have textured interiors like uh carpeting.
- 27:44SPEAKER_06: Mine do.
- 27:46SPEAKER_06: I mean, I know the Germans used Hugo Hugo Boss uniforms and shit.
- 27:50SPEAKER_08: So I mean, maybe they had cut pile carpeting in the tiger tanks, but but uh on the uh the gremlin that I'm working on, I had actually used that stippling technique because I had to sand down the the ejector pin marks that were in there that were the size of a manhole cover.
- 28:05SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 28:05SPEAKER_08: So I actually used the stippling technique with the to me extra thin, and I like the texture that it came out with.
- 28:11SPEAKER_08: So I'm just gonna paint that texture, paint over the texture.
- 28:15SPEAKER_08: So I'm glad you mentioned that.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: One of the things that I was gonna mention was that as an alternative because the way I used to do it, you know, you do a gloss black or semi-gloss black on all the vinyl and then do a flat black on the uh carpet, and I would just oftentimes just stipple it, you know.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it it and it if it's thick enough paint, it creates enough of a uh a texture, right, if you will, on it without uh getting into the flocking and all that stuff.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that's that's definitely a definitely a good way.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: And then if you can get enough texture on it, yeah, you can paint it any color you want, you know.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: And if you do a nice flat sheen, it'd look very much like carpet without going through the process of flocking.
- 28:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 28:56SPEAKER_08: So let me ask you, flock guys, are you ever worried about that stuff getting like dusty while your model is just sitting on your on your shelf with the because you know the windows of course are open on the model, so are you ever worried about getting dust in there and having to clean that out?
- 29:07SPEAKER_07: Not until right this second.
- 29:09SPEAKER_07: No.
- 29:09SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 29:12SPEAKER_02: Well, now that you mention it, yeah.
- 29:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean they're far enough away and they're put they're they're put away, you know.
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: I'm not really too concerned about it, but kind of yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: So I um so my process is I don't use a box, but I'll use it just a paper plate, and I usually do it on a paper plate for the same reason, kind of captures it, and then it can be dumped back in fairly easily.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I do use white glue, just the Elmer's, and I usually put enough on on the whole thing to put it down.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: But what I've noticed with this stuff, and maybe some of the maybe medium density stuff covers better.
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: It doesn't really cover in one coat.
- 29:50SPEAKER_02: So usually I do at least two coats.
- 29:52SPEAKER_02: So I'll I'll put the glue down, a nice even coat, put the flocking on, let it dry out, and then I'll do a second coat.
- 29:59SPEAKER_02: I'll just go back over the whole thing with a brush.
- 30:01SPEAKER_02: I keep the cheap uh Walmart disposable brushes of what I typically use, and then I'll add a second coat on.
- 30:08SPEAKER_02: And usually after two coats, it's uh it's enough coverage, you know.
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: It could could shrink.
- 30:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, that stuff does peel off very easily, but I figure it's down on the inside of the car, very slim probability that's gonna happen, you know.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, um maybe as stuff shrinks, you know.
- 30:23SPEAKER_02: Ask me in uh ask me in 20 years, you know, if I'm still a lot of cool.
- 30:26SPEAKER_02: We'll we'll report back and see what it looks like.
- 30:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
- 30:30SPEAKER_08: That's awesome.
- 30:31SPEAKER_08: I was just gonna suggest, what if you did uh shake and bake style while you did the uh you put it you put on the white glue, slather it on there, put it in a bag yellow the flock, and shake shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, and see how it goes.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you could do that.
- 30:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, I usually put it on there and I go back and try to tamp it down a little bit once it sets up.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: I don't always do that, so the glue is just gonna capture whatever sticks to it, right?
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: So even though you're putting it on in a heavy layer, it may not necessarily all stick.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: So usually, usually a couple layers.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Um, I've heard about what you said, Jason, about using kind of a similar color.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, we've talked quite a bit about just the cheap craft paint, but the cheap craft paint works for that good too because it it's water-based, it doesn't dry immediately, so you can get a 70 cent bottle of that, shake it well, it's I got a thick consistency.
- 31:19SPEAKER_02: So you could again either stipple that on, make for a good um carpet, or you could use that as your base to put your uh put your flocking on.
- 31:28SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and then when you're done with it, you can mail it to Mike.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: There you go.
- 31:32SPEAKER_02: The nice thing about it is it cleans up easy, right?
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: It's it's water-based.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: So if you have a lacquer-based paint on the interior, you know, I keep Q-tips, you know, I go through a pile of q-tips, you know, just a little bit of saliva is a good cleaner.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: It takes that stuff right off, you know.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: So it just tricks the trade, you know.
- 31:49SPEAKER_06: Um so do you apply the q-tip, the the saliva to the q-tip, or do you lick it first and then use the q-tip to wipe it away?
- 31:55SPEAKER_02: I usually stuff it up my nose a couple times to damp it, and then I usually roll it around in my mouth and then go or you know, that way the q-tip is flavored.
- 32:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 32:06SPEAKER_08: Salty, yum.
- 32:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 32:09SPEAKER_08: Like like pizza cheese when he takes it out, it's just like lift almost.
- 32:13SPEAKER_08: Oh boy, yeah, you had to take it there.
- 32:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 32:17SPEAKER_02: Um, I love my job.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's fantastic.
- 32:21SPEAKER_02: So, last thing to kind of mention about carpet before we move on.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I know people are now using the jungle website, right?
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: Let's just let me just stake the claim today and tell you that Uncle Jody doesn't shop at Amazon.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: I haven't bought anything from there in probably eight years.
- 32:35SPEAKER_07: Well, you're losing out.
- 32:36SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna feed, I'm not gonna feed that corporate monster.
- 32:38SPEAKER_07: So you're losing out.
- 32:40SPEAKER_07: You're losing out, my friend.
- 32:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I find I find stuff other places that I need, so okay.
- 32:47SPEAKER_02: But anyways, they sell my understanding that um you can buy a very thin um felt that's a decent back.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: You know, you can buy felt from the Hobby Lobbies and things, but it's usually a little bit heavier, but they actually sell a thinner grade of uh felt.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: So Matt's models and more.
- 33:09SPEAKER_02: Matt's mentioned it on his channel.
- 33:10SPEAKER_02: I think he's used it in a couple different applications.
- 33:13SPEAKER_02: That's a material too, you know.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: If you've got a fairly flat floor, then the adhesive is good enough, but it's adhesive, so it could just like the white blue, could theoretically give up the ghost at some point.
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but um, I think that's another it's another way, you know.
- 33:27SPEAKER_02: Even if you use that in the context of uh carpet floor mats or something like that, would be kind of cool, you know.
- 33:33SPEAKER_07: I think that would be cool.
- 33:34SPEAKER_07: I don't think that's actually a cool idea, yeah.
- 33:36SPEAKER_07: I can't see using that on a whole floor though, because I yeah, it seems labor intensive.
- 33:40SPEAKER_07: See, I I so it's labor-intensive, I envision wrinkles, unintentional wrinkles.
- 33:46SPEAKER_07: It's just doesn't it seems yeah, but I mean whatever, whatever, float you go.
- 33:53SPEAKER_08: I will say that I have actually used felt for the carpeting of a floor of a car, but first we want to have a message from our sponsor, Amazon.
- 34:01SPEAKER_08: No, just kidding.
- 34:05SPEAKER_08: Nice.
- 34:05SPEAKER_08: So I was working on the 12th scale 57 Chevy from Ravel.
- 34:09SPEAKER_08: If you don't have that kit in your stash, I recommend it.
- 34:11SPEAKER_08: It's actually kind of a cool kit.
- 34:13SPEAKER_08: I wanted to do carpet kit in there.
- 34:14SPEAKER_08: I was doing a buddy build with uh this is a throwback from the past, Papa Dan.
- 34:18SPEAKER_08: If you guys remember Papa Dan.
- 34:19SPEAKER_07: Wow, yes, yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_08: So this was a long time ago we're doing this, and you know, doing a buddy build, so you're sharing pictures, and what's the first rule of a buddy build?
- 34:27SPEAKER_08: You'll want to do just a little bit better than your buddy, right?
- 34:30SPEAKER_08: That's that's how I go about doing it.
- 34:32SPEAKER_08: So I decided I'm gonna do a carpet kit, and then I'm like, how the hell do I do a carpet kit?
- 34:37SPEAKER_08: And then I was stressing over it, and I was talking to Mrs.
- 34:40SPEAKER_08: BG, and she goes, just lay down masking tape inside of there, trace it out, cut it out, and then you'll have a pattern after that.
- 34:46SPEAKER_08: And I'm like, How the hell do you know that?
- 34:48SPEAKER_08: She goes, Well, this isn't that what you your cosplay people do that you watch on YouTube, they they make a pattern out of something, like like their head, cut it out, you know, with duct tape, whatever they cut it out, and then you have this really cool pattern that you can reshape out of foam and everything.
- 35:00SPEAKER_08: I'm like, oh my god.
- 35:01SPEAKER_08: So I did that.
- 35:02SPEAKER_08: I did the masking tape and say the cart, and then I traced it all out with Sharpie and then cut it all out with a racer knife, and I had these really awesome patterns that I could transfer right to the pieces of um of the felt, and I made a carpet kit for this thing, and then I I found out that you shouldn't use super glue with felt because the felt just fucks it right up and doesn't let you attack it to anything.
- 35:23SPEAKER_08: So now you just have a really hard dark spot, like a dog peed, like a dog peed in your car.
- 35:29SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 35:30SPEAKER_08: So I had to recut another piece, but hey, I had a template, so I was good.
- 35:34SPEAKER_08: But uh that was quite a few years ago.
- 35:36SPEAKER_08: I should go check and see how that's doing.
- 35:37SPEAKER_08: It's in the cage, it's in the cage.
- 35:39SPEAKER_07: That might be interesting.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: The uh street machine group build I did a couple years ago, the van, the surfer van.
- 35:46SPEAKER_02: So the back of that I put I bought felt to put on the floor.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I actually bought some um suede or uh crushed crushed floor material that I used on the inside of that.
- 35:57SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 35:58SPEAKER_02: That's that was just all white glued white glued in when I did that.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: So okay.
- 36:03SPEAKER_07: Well, I was gonna what I was gonna say was uh there's a it might be a little known company to some of the folks listening to us, but I think all of us have have heard of it before.
- 36:12SPEAKER_07: Zoom on company out of China.
- 36:16SPEAKER_07: I think he's China.
- 36:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, that's correct.
- 36:20SPEAKER_07: Um he sells felt carpet kits for a lot of the Tamiya kits.
- 36:25SPEAKER_07: And I actually have a couple.
- 36:27SPEAKER_07: I actually have a couple.
- 36:28SPEAKER_07: Uh only his have like an adhesive backing on them, and they're cut to perfectly fit.
- 36:34SPEAKER_07: So I mean, felt would look really, really good if you could master getting it in there perfectly, not having the edges frayed just a little bit, like when you cut felt, it's gonna fray.
- 36:46SPEAKER_07: And you know, just like I said, the wrinkles.
- 36:49SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 36:50SPEAKER_08: Hit it with a lighter.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:52SPEAKER_08: Hit the edges with a lighter.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: It'll heat he'll melt off the edges.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 36:56SPEAKER_02: Yep, takes care of the fuzzies.
- 36:58SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 36:58SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean, I don't I'm gonna have to try that.
- 37:01SPEAKER_08: I mean, like you use a he's a low flame, don't like you know, starting a barbecue or nothing, but you're not using a blow torch.
- 37:07SPEAKER_02: Maybe try maybe maybe try it outside first if you don't enjoy it.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: Because because because all that flocking material on your desk is gonna be a fucking tinder box over there.
- 37:18SPEAKER_07: Oh no, no sir.
- 37:20SPEAKER_07: So uh no, sir.
- 37:21SPEAKER_07: My flocking material is in my box.
- 37:23SPEAKER_07: Oh, there you go.
- 37:24SPEAKER_07: Fair enough.
- 37:25SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 37:26SPEAKER_06: You don't want to use a lighter than that, but that's also a good way to clean it up really fast.
- 37:30SPEAKER_08: This is true, expensively fast.
- 37:34SPEAKER_08: Why don't it just float to the to the ceiling?
- 37:37SPEAKER_08: Oh no, it's going for the fan.
- 37:38SPEAKER_08: All right, yeah, that's funny.
- 37:40unknown: Cool.
- 37:40SPEAKER_02: All right, Jody, what else you got for us?
- 37:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we talked about color, right, and the importance of that, which I think is important, you know, as you build a model, right?
- 37:48SPEAKER_02: Colors everything really, it brings people in, right?
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: If you want to accentuate detail, do a different color other than maybe the outside, you know, depending on how you want that to look.
- 38:00SPEAKER_02: Sheens are important, I think.
- 38:02SPEAKER_02: You know, not everything is one color or one sheen inside a vehicle or in an engine bay.
- 38:07SPEAKER_02: So utilizing that, I think, is also extremely important.
- 38:10SPEAKER_02: We talked about flocking, a couple different ways that we um use it.
- 38:14SPEAKER_02: Embossing powder is one, or I've heard that.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: I've yet to find it or see it.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I did just pick up some uh black pigment to use to try to use with the flocking to darken the flocking up.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: So I'll have to report back on that how that works.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's no different, it's it's material, you know, and it's um I think it should work to be able to actually darken it up.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Again, I mix custom colors as needed to try to match the interior color that I'm working with.
- 38:41SPEAKER_02: The felt, I know a few people are doing that.
- 38:43SPEAKER_02: Um, hobby grade felt a little bit thicker.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Again, to my understanding, there's thinner felt material that is available, probably similar to the zoom on carpet kits because the stuff that I heard, it's it is a decent back.
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: So, you know, there are there are some options out there for that.
- 38:59SPEAKER_02: So that kind of covers that.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: But what about the Mustang, right?
- 39:03SPEAKER_02: That I just did, and the Skyline both had wood grain uh accenting inside them, right?
- 39:08SPEAKER_02: Which many 60s and 70s cars did.
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: The Skyline, I ended up just painting my own uh wood grain pattern on that.
- 39:17SPEAKER_02: And the Mustang actually had wood grain decals that looked okay, uh, fairly, fairly convincing, a little bit dark.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: They could have been a little bit lighter.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: It stuck really well to the interior, so I just utilized those.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: What about uh what about wood grain patterns?
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: You guys, and and what do you guys do for wood grain?
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: Justin's gotta have a good recipe for that, so let's start with him.
- 39:38SPEAKER_06: Again, figure world when you're doing um rifle butts and stuff like that.
- 39:43SPEAKER_06: You know, it kind of matches up to the size of what we're talking about with interiors and stuff.
- 39:47SPEAKER_06: Nice way to do it is um start with like a base of a tan.
- 39:52SPEAKER_06: Paint paint the whole wood grained area tan and then get yourself one of those uh either a real gnarly old brush or um like one of those streaking brushes that's got the the you know the crazy ends to them.
- 40:05SPEAKER_06: Some of the best the best way to do it, I would say, and I'm one of those people that always says there's no best.
- 40:12SPEAKER_06: My best way is oil paints.
- 40:14SPEAKER_06: Get yourself some some brown oil paints, get a couple different shades, burn ochre, burn umber, sierra, nevada, whatever the hell those colors are.
- 40:23SPEAKER_06: I don't freaking know.
- 40:25SPEAKER_06: But yeah, just choose one and some just throw some streaks in there, let it dry, and then um hit it with a little bit of clear orange or clear yellow, and that brings in the depth and the warmth.
- 40:37SPEAKER_06: Super simple way to do it.
- 40:38SPEAKER_06: Sounds complicated, but it's really not.
- 40:40SPEAKER_06: You can't go you can't go wrong.
- 40:42SPEAKER_08: I have a question for Justin.
- 40:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, why oil paints?
- 40:45SPEAKER_08: Is it because they don't mix readily because they're not as thin?
- 40:49SPEAKER_06: Yeah, like the uh it's it streaks a lot better and it doesn't dry as fast.
- 40:54SPEAKER_06: So if it goes on heavy, you can go in there with a little bit of mineral spirits and kind of erase, you know, to get the exact wood grain that you're looking for.
- 41:04SPEAKER_09: All right.
- 41:05SPEAKER_06: And you can actually change the wood grain, you know, if you want something uh a little more paler and beat up old grade wood instead of using a tan, use a gray as your base.
- 41:16SPEAKER_06: Uh you know what I mean?
- 41:17SPEAKER_06: And and don't put the uh the clear orange or clear yellow over top because you don't want it to have that warmth.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: No, uh, but you can yeah, you can you can change the hues and the tones just by using the Tamiya clear paints.
- 41:29SPEAKER_06: And uh, you know, just I would suggest if you're gonna do it, buy a couple of tones of gray, a couple of tones of tans, a couple of different tubes of oil paint.
- 41:39SPEAKER_06: It doesn't have to be expensive oil paint either.
- 41:41SPEAKER_06: You get the cheap stuff at at the lobby of hobbies, and um, you know, just just experiment, you know, because you might want a a walnut burl finish on the inside, or you know, an oak finish on the inside.
- 41:53SPEAKER_06: You just just play around.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: It's only plastic.
- 41:56SPEAKER_06: Can't go wrong.
- 41:58SPEAKER_07: That's it, it's only plastic.
- 42:00SPEAKER_08: What about you, Mr.
- 42:01SPEAKER_08: BG?
- 42:02SPEAKER_08: Would would would uh would detailing?
- 42:04SPEAKER_08: What let's see.
- 42:05SPEAKER_08: In the past, uh, I would use a technique that I learned from Andy that was uh like like Justin's saying, you use a tan and then uh go back over the tan, but use the uh brown panel liner, not the dark brown, but just brown panel liner.
- 42:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah and then uh once that starts to set up a little bit, just kind of hit it with a with a brush a little to to like sort of make a little bit of a wood grain pattern in it, or you could hit it with a q-tip and sort of drag it a little bit or something like that.
- 42:31SPEAKER_08: But um, those are my go-tos.
- 42:33SPEAKER_08: I don't really do a whole lot of wood paneling trim inside.
- 42:36SPEAKER_08: I've done a lot more of the wood texture, like in the in in the pickup truck beds or uh woody woody wagons, something like that.
- 42:42SPEAKER_08: So yeah, um, but yeah, um the the the two or three areas that you would see it inside a car interior.
- 42:50SPEAKER_08: I really feel like the eye doesn't catch it easily enough to determine whether or not it's the proper pattern or it's the right kind of applique that they would add in there and stuff.
- 42:59SPEAKER_06: So sometimes you just gotta get it close.
- 43:01SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 43:02SPEAKER_08: That's that's that's been the story of my life.
- 43:05SPEAKER_08: So there you go.
- 43:07SPEAKER_02: At a boy.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, close enough.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: What about you, Mr.
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: Hanscom?
- 43:13SPEAKER_02: I know you do a little bit of uh wood stuff over there.
- 43:16SPEAKER_07: I try.
- 43:17SPEAKER_07: I wouldn't say I I wouldn't say I succeed.
- 43:19SPEAKER_07: I try.
- 43:20SPEAKER_07: I've done so I've I've got some old model master paint that's like wood and rust, they're like shades of brown, obviously.
- 43:28SPEAKER_07: But what I've started using is I've got some um vallejo paints.
- 43:33SPEAKER_07: They're actually their panzer aces vallejo paint, right?
- 43:38SPEAKER_07: It's old wood, new wood, and then I what I'll do is I'll do a mixture of that, maybe add some tan if I need to, and then dry brush black, a little bit of black over it.
- 43:50SPEAKER_07: But I found once I do that, then what I'll take my actually my fingertip and I'll just kind of smudge it around, and it takes those black streaks.
- 43:58SPEAKER_07: In my in my brain, if My mind's eye, it takes those black streaks and it kind of mutes them and dulls them and mushes them around and makes them not as stark.
- 44:07SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 44:07SPEAKER_09: Yep.
- 44:08SPEAKER_07: Whether it looks legit or not, to me, I think it looks pretty good.
- 44:11SPEAKER_07: So and I also have with like newer wood grain, I've used a little bit of rust wash over it.
- 44:19SPEAKER_07: Orange rust wash.
- 44:21SPEAKER_07: It's gonna be the wash, not the paint, because it's super thin, and you just put a little bit of over that, and like Justin said, it gives you that kind of warmth if you want it.
- 44:29SPEAKER_07: Um but I am not at all an authority on wood grain.
- 44:33SPEAKER_07: I'm still learning, so yeah.
- 44:35SPEAKER_07: That's what I've done so far, and I've been pretty happy with it, but I I'm sure that there's room for improvement.
- 44:41SPEAKER_02: Oil paint's a good idea.
- 44:42SPEAKER_02: I guess I hadn't thought about that.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: I mean, my process similarly, I mean, if it's I start with black or dark base, and then I use desert yellow tamiya, and then we'll kind of dry brush it, if you will, to create kind of a texture or a pattern behind it, and then I'll usually just brush over the uh clear orange tamiya.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: So, you know, when I did the skyline, you know, we should have prefaced this whole thing, thinking about it now, with reference images, right?
- 45:13SPEAKER_02: The beauty of the internet is reference images.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: So when I am gonna do something highly detailed, such as that skyline, I went out and found images to know exactly the areas in the dash that need to be brain, which isn't everywhere.
- 45:25SPEAKER_02: There's just two distinct spots.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: There's a couple spots down in the center console, and that was my guide.
- 45:31SPEAKER_02: And by looking at that image, right, you can kind of in your own brain kind of paint the picture of what it is it needs to look like.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: So dark base kind of streak or drag the desert yellow on there because it's kind of a mid, you know, it's not too dark, but it's not too light, and then the uh then the orange over that was like pre-spot on for at least the Nissan.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: But I think like Justin said, you could you could do if you wanted a gray.
- 45:57SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's so many different patterns of wood grain across the generations of vehicles, you know.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: I mean, oh yeah.
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, you know, just the the the process I just told you I used the desert yellow and um you know, maybe a little bit of brown, and the orange is very kind of Burlwood looking, like a Rolls-Royce or high-end European.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: It's got a very similar look to that, you know.
- 46:21SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like my first car, Naughty Pine.
- 46:23SPEAKER_08: That was the dash.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: Oh, was it Naughty Pine?
- 46:27SPEAKER_10: Nice thing.
- 46:28SPEAKER_09: No, I was just kidding.
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: So wood grain again, we've got decal options, we have paint options.
- 46:35SPEAKER_02: You're trying to pull that out.
- 46:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, there's different ways.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: I mean, you could surely lean heavily on the uh military side of things, right?
- 46:42SPEAKER_02: Because there is quite a bit of work done, you know, uh crates, uh gun stocks, truck beds, um, a lot of good references and uh ways of actually achieving that out there, I think.
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: Right?
- 46:54SPEAKER_02: Ours is just ours alone.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: And if uh the intent of the podcast is just talk about interiors, right?
- 47:00SPEAKER_02: We have a few different ways that we all do it to achieve kind of a similar result.
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: Again, it's 24 scale, right?
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: Or 25th.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: So it's such a small thing anyway.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: The mind's eye tricks you to think, hey, that's wood grain, right?
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: Because it looks like it.
- 47:14SPEAKER_08: Because you know it's supposed to be there, right?
- 47:17SPEAKER_08: That's exactly.
- 47:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 47:19SPEAKER_08: Now that that's a you mentioned something uh about the the decal world, which uh got me thinking that would might be something that the people of GoFor Racing, if you're listening, probably not.
- 47:30SPEAKER_08: If you wanted to just if you wanted to just make decal sheets of just wood grain that we could slice up and then stick into the motor cars, that could be an untapped well of tens of dollars you could make back.
- 47:42SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I feel like there is something like that already out there.
- 47:46SPEAKER_08: Well, there is, but it's by USHI, but you can't think he produces them anymore.
- 47:53SPEAKER_07: So I think Scale Motorsports used to make a good grade.
- 48:01SPEAKER_07: Whether they still do or not is kind of up for debate.
- 48:04SPEAKER_07: I'm not even sure what scale motorsports is still actively doing at this point.
- 48:08SPEAKER_02: Um, but I wonder if I wonder if STS, they probably have something too.
- 48:13SPEAKER_02: They have a pile of different things available, right?
- 48:16SPEAKER_02: So another another another good option for sure would be would be uh would be that.
- 48:21SPEAKER_06: Gopher Racing does have wood grain decals.
- 48:26SPEAKER_08: That was fast.
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: That was fast.
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: Damn, we haven't even put this out yet.
- 48:30SPEAKER_07: How in the heck how in the heck can you your camera's so glitchy, but yet your internet on your phone is so fast.
- 48:36SPEAKER_08: Yeah, boom, look at that.
- 48:37SPEAKER_08: There it is.
- 48:38SPEAKER_07: Oh, that's cool.
- 48:40SPEAKER_08: That's great.
- 48:40SPEAKER_08: Okay, well, I was gonna put it out to the listeners like hey, if you heard about you know anybody who does decals, let us know.
- 48:46SPEAKER_08: Share it on the Facebook page.
- 48:48SPEAKER_08: Oh, if you have used those decals, share it on the Facebook page.
- 48:52SPEAKER_08: I want to see that.
- 48:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, share all your techniques on the Facebook page.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: How are you doing?
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: That's what we're supposed to do.
- 48:58SPEAKER_08: That's what this is here for.
- 48:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right.
- 49:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the internet for sharing stuff rather than just posting pictures of your cat playing piano.
- 49:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:06SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 49:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:08SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
- 49:09SPEAKER_02: Unless your cat plays piano, damn it.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 49:12SPEAKER_08: Then you should be making money.
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: That's what goes on on the internet nowadays, right?
- 49:15SPEAKER_08: I don't know.
- 49:15SPEAKER_08: I don't use it.
- 49:17SPEAKER_02: So uh speaking of wood grains and dashes, where we typically see that.
- 49:21SPEAKER_02: So let's talk a little bit about further dash enhancement.
- 49:25SPEAKER_02: You know, most models today it seems like we have gauge decals, which is fantastic, right?
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: And a lot of those are usually at a really good quality and um pretty forgiving.
- 49:36SPEAKER_02: You know, I've got some GoFor Racing uh NASCAR uh gauges, you know, different dashes over here.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: I was just using them uh for this gremlin that I'm working on, right?
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: So there's options out there for different uh gauge decals, which is fantastic.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: But uh what about uh what about our our gauge faces?
- 49:54SPEAKER_02: What's everybody doing?
- 49:55SPEAKER_02: I know that we've got 3D, um, 3D resins out there now, or uh the UV resins, right?
- 50:01SPEAKER_02: We've got the clear coats that we can use.
- 50:04SPEAKER_02: What do you guys use?
- 50:05SPEAKER_02: Do you bother doing gauge faces for one?
- 50:08SPEAKER_02: And if you do, what would you use for material?
- 50:10SPEAKER_08: Uh let's see.
- 50:11SPEAKER_08: So for first off, uh, I gotta mention, I gotta give this shout out to um a channel from way back in the day, Buddy and What's His Face?
- 50:18SPEAKER_08: Never heard of that.
- 50:20SPEAKER_08: That must be an old one.
- 50:22SPEAKER_08: It's an older channel, but uh he comes back once in a while, but I can't remember uh uh he played two different characters, it was hilarious.
- 50:30SPEAKER_08: Anyway, one of the techniques that he actually shared one time was, and it just totally blew my mind, he would go and buy car magazines and they always have pictures of Stuart Warren gauges, stuff like that, and he would actually find photographs in the in the advertisements of the right size gauge or whatever, because they always have the layout, and he would cut them out and then use those as the actual gaze faces and then put a little white glue or something in there to attack it.
- 50:56SPEAKER_08: I'm like, freaking genius, man.
- 50:58SPEAKER_08: Seems like a bad idea.
- 51:00SPEAKER_08: It seems that, but that's not a bad idea.
- 51:02SPEAKER_08: Hey, you know, back in the day, that's what you had, you know.
- 51:04SPEAKER_08: So that's what you had.
- 51:06SPEAKER_10: That's right.
- 51:06SPEAKER_08: Right, that's that's an old school way of doing it.
- 51:08SPEAKER_08: But I I thought that was really cool.
- 51:09SPEAKER_08: I I come, but doing cages, man, I don't know.
- 51:13SPEAKER_02: Um I mean, speaking of old school ways, right?
- 51:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, let's take the the gauge um decals that come with kits today aside, you know.
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, uh oftentimes it's just flat black, and you could use a uh a pencil or a gel pen, fine gel pen, you know, and just very, very carefully drag that across the face, you know.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Is it gonna be perfect?
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: Well, no, but again, that the scale it's at, yes, and maybe a dark interior, it's going to highlight it enough where you can.
- 51:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just gotta hint at it, you know.
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so beyond the decals, which are readily available, we have other options, which is pencil, you know, we've got weathering pencils, the gel pens work really good for stuff like that, you know.
- 51:57SPEAKER_02: A sharpie maybe a little bit much because just the amount of material.
- 52:01SPEAKER_02: But the the gel pens, those things are fantastic, you know.
- 52:04SPEAKER_02: I use those quite a bit.
- 52:05SPEAKER_08: So if the gauge has decent uh molding to it, so it's nice and proud.
- 52:11SPEAKER_08: I've I've done uh a white a gloss white surface, and then I would put some to me a flat black, just flow that in there nice and thin, and then go back with the the uh eraser end of a pencil and just swirl that on there and wipe off after after stride, wipe off the the flat black, and then you have your numbers in in lines come up.
- 52:35SPEAKER_08: That's that's the nice trick.
- 52:36SPEAKER_08: But um boy, you gotta have a large gauge, you know, make sure that it works better on tachometers because of the size of them.
- 52:43SPEAKER_08: But uh that's that's something I've I've liked to do in the past.
- 52:46SPEAKER_02: Fantastic.
- 52:47SPEAKER_08: You could also try.
- 52:48SPEAKER_08: I've been watching a lot of people doing uh uh figure painting and stuff now, and they talk about using inks, right?
- 52:53SPEAKER_08: Because inks are very, very thin.
- 52:55SPEAKER_08: I'm thinking you could you could paint your gauge face uh uh black or white or whatever, and then uh flow in some of that super thin ink just to give it that that that face tint or whatever you want to do, so you'd have to do that.
- 53:10SPEAKER_02: That was my thought.
- 53:11SPEAKER_02: So what I did was so what I did on the um the the studebaker, the Avante that I did, so I used bare metal foil for the gauge cluster, and then you know, kind of burnished it all in so you could see the detail.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: Then I use just uh the dark gray panel liner and just gently put that in there and it it's like perfect because oh that's great.
- 53:33SPEAKER_02: The the the the numbers are highlighted and it provided because that car has got a white interior, it's got a really nice gray gauge face, looks very much like an old watch.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, okay.
- 53:45SPEAKER_02: That's awesome.
- 53:46SPEAKER_02: So that's another it's so it's another one.
- 53:48SPEAKER_02: Bare metal foil.
- 53:49SPEAKER_02: I've used that on a number of dashes.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: I apparently there's a uh shortage.
- 53:53SPEAKER_02: I I've heard that.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: Now you get all the uh YouTube guys out there creating mass chaos and using aluminum foil to make it, which is fine.
- 54:01SPEAKER_08: But um well, as well as long as we still have toilet paper, the world's okay.
- 54:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, we're good.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: Um so bare metal foil, you know, using that and uh wash or an ink, or again, um acrylic craft paint, cheap something that wipes off really easily, and then you could go over that after with a clear or a UV resin glue if you want to.
- 54:23SPEAKER_02: I mean you you guys typically try to put a gauge face on that, like a like a glue or resin or something like that.
- 54:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, how often do you guys do that?
- 54:31SPEAKER_07: Every time.
- 54:31SPEAKER_07: And I use I actually use gloss Modge Podge.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: Oh, there you go.
- 54:35SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that yeah, dries nice and clear.
- 54:37SPEAKER_07: If you can drop it in there, and you can it might take two or three coat, two or three drops to get it there as it progresses, but it will dry with a nice round surface.
- 54:49SPEAKER_07: Nice so it looks like so it looks like there's a little bit of contrast and it looks like a clear gauge face there.
- 54:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I I like using uh some stuff I got from Iceman.
- 54:59SPEAKER_08: He actually sells three transparent 3D resin in a in a dropper bottle and just hit that hit that with the uh with the old UV light.
- 55:07SPEAKER_02: Does it go on thick enough to do just one coat to get that domed effect, or do you gotta do a couple?
- 55:13SPEAKER_08: No, one one coat's pretty good because it's thick stuff, so it drops in there, and you can if it doesn't go everywhere you want to, you can get a toothpick or the hobby knife, whatever and sort of tease it around and stuff because it's got a high surface tension.
- 55:23SPEAKER_02: So what about you?
- 55:24SPEAKER_02: Do you what about you, Justin?
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: Probably the same.
- 55:26SPEAKER_02: You've done plenty of military and stuff, yeah.
- 55:29SPEAKER_06: Like for headlight bezels or not bezels, but the the lenses and stuff like that.
- 55:33SPEAKER_06: I'll I'll use the 3D printed uh or the 3D printed the the UV cure resins.
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: The the set that I got, it's actually a three-bottle set.
- 55:42SPEAKER_06: It comes thick, thin, and flexible.
- 55:45SPEAKER_06: So you you actually can choose what what suits what you're working on.
- 55:49SPEAKER_06: Um and then you just hit it with the flashlight for a minute or so and cured.
- 55:53SPEAKER_06: Perfect.
- 55:54SPEAKER_06: Uh so when it comes, yeah, when it comes to clear stuff like that, that's that's pretty much what I use.
- 55:58SPEAKER_02: I haven't bought any of that, I haven't bought any of that stuff yet.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's the next progression and environment things to try.
- 56:03SPEAKER_06: It's not expensive at all, you know?
- 56:05SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and it's fantastic for uh filling seams if you're building an aircraft.
- 56:10SPEAKER_06: It's great for filling seams because it stands real nice.
- 56:13SPEAKER_06: You can actually get it pretty flat and level in that seam before you cure it.
- 56:17SPEAKER_06: You know what I mean?
- 56:18SPEAKER_06: So to eliminate a lot of your sanding, it's it's it's good stuff.
- 56:21SPEAKER_08: It's good stuff.
- 56:22SPEAKER_08: And you can also use it as an adhesive if you want to put it on your windows and stuff like that.
- 56:26SPEAKER_02: Uh I've heard that.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: I have heard that.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: I use the um I use the old school X22 acrylic.
- 56:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, nice to me a clear for exactly what Jason said.
- 56:36SPEAKER_02: It's thick enough where if you put on a couple coats, um, you can move it around right into the bezel itself.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: And if you do two, three coats of this, this will also build up to a nice dome.
- 56:49SPEAKER_02: So that won't yellow either.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: It won't, no.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: So we both so again, we've got a few different methods, right?
- 56:54SPEAKER_02: To have a common achievement out of it.
- 56:57SPEAKER_02: But uh, I know the 3D or the uh the resin stuff that the UV, I know a lot of people are using that stuff now, and seems seems to be kind of a good path forward.
- 57:05SPEAKER_06: So you can't beat how fast it cures.
- 57:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very very quick.
- 57:10SPEAKER_02: It's so you got a little UV light.
- 57:12SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's like 30 seconds, depending on how thick you put it on there.
- 57:15SPEAKER_06: 30 seconds, 90 seconds, somewhere in there.
- 57:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it dries almost as fast as to me a jar paint.
- 57:20SPEAKER_02: Okay, so is it um but it dries really clear?
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: So could you use it to install could you use it for windows to install windows?
- 57:30SPEAKER_06: I've used it, I've used it for windows canopies on aircraft.
- 57:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 57:35SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 57:35SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it doesn't have a lot of tensile strength though, so it won't handle a lot of torque or orange.
- 57:41SPEAKER_02: I mean, we you know, we've talked about adidas.
- 57:44SPEAKER_02: We use different canopy glues.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: I got the micro crystal clear that works good because that you know you have to do thin coats, but that also dries clear.
- 57:53SPEAKER_02: So if you wanted the build up, put just a thin layer.
- 57:56SPEAKER_02: Maybe it was like a flat um gauge um cluster cover, but um, if it's a domed one, you know, multiple layers of that, or maybe the UV is really the way to go.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we've got um same with um gauge decals.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: We've got radio decals, there's manufacturers.
- 58:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, sir.
- 58:16SPEAKER_08: I was gonna ask about radios, but you just said it, so never mind.
- 58:20SPEAKER_08: I'll see you.
- 58:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so so I I haven't bought any of these yet.
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: Maybe you guys can speak to it, but I know STS is now putting out these um 3D dimensional decals.
- 58:31SPEAKER_02: Have you ever seen them?
- 58:32SPEAKER_08: No, no, they're doing that.
- 58:33SPEAKER_08: That's awesome.
- 58:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so so there was um a couple different manufacturers of headlights out there that just stick on, and I know STS has now started to do some of that, and they have um, I think um radios is one of the things that they have, so it's a dimensional decal.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: I'm assuming they're adhesive backed, and you just kind of stick them on.
- 58:54SPEAKER_02: I I haven't I haven't tried any yet.
- 58:55SPEAKER_08: They're uh in the model plane world, they use a lot of uh 3D printed uh dimensional decals for a cockpit detail.
- 59:01SPEAKER_08: Uh but you gotta like you gotta like sand or or file off the existing details so you can put that on there.
- 59:07SPEAKER_08: Some of them do have an adhesive back, but it's always better to still glue that on because adhesive back, you can't really guarantee uh how strong that's gonna be.
- 59:15SPEAKER_08: So the last thing you need is your F-14 with the uh Iceman's F-14 with uh with a cockpit gauge cluster just floating around inside of there.
- 59:23SPEAKER_08: But um I think it's awesome because I mean I was just thinking about projects I'm working on right now where uh trying to do detail the radio stuff.
- 59:31SPEAKER_08: It's like, man, that's so teeny.
- 59:33SPEAKER_08: And trying to detail it's a pain in the ass.
- 59:34SPEAKER_08: But if you just get in there with one like a micro chisel and shave that off there and stick on a 3D printed dimensional decal of a radio, that's great.
- 59:43SPEAKER_08: Because then you can you can get rid of the uh let's say I don't want to use the AFM radio that's in this uh GTL.
- 59:50SPEAKER_08: Let's uh you know what?
- 59:51SPEAKER_08: Let's go pioneer, you know, that kind of a thing.
- 59:53SPEAKER_08: There you go.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, they're out there.
- 59:55SPEAKER_02: I haven't I haven't bought any or used any yet, but I know there are manufacturers of them, and I know STS is starting to do some of those too.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_02: So that's awesome.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_07: Some of the stuff that I've used, Go for Racing make makes a decal sheet that has matter of fact, you probably have it.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_07: I do.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_07: It's got uh radio faces on it.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_07: However, I find them to be just a tiny bit too big.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_07: Hmm, yeah.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_08: Okay, yeah.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_08: Maybe 24 scale then rather than 25th scale.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah, somewhere in there.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_07: A little bit, maybe maybe maybe 23rd scale.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_07: Like some of them are like even 23rd scale, yeah.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_07: You put you put them in there, and you're like, okay, I guess that radio is just a little bit bigger than it should be.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_02: It seems they made it bigger to try to capture more detail because maybe uh smaller scale didn't capture the detail good enough.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_02: But you're right, you're right.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they do seem a little bit big.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, there there is somebody that we're completely overlooking, and that's bestmodelcarparts.com.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_08: Who used to, I think they still sell on eBay, they would give you this little like business card size thing that actually had the gauges printed on there.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_08: Oh, no kidding.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_08: And the guy used to catch a lot of heat because they called it a decal.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_08: Well, people would try to soak them in water, they didn't come off and all that stuff, and he had to go and put a big thing on it saying it's not a decal, it's uh an actual uh photo realistic print, and you have to cut them out.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_02: Right, and you just glue them in, yeah.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_08: Yeah, exactly, and then and then white glue them in.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_08: And uh I discovered that the best thing to do with that is to with a microchisel go in and or or maybe a drill bit, take out the detail that's already on that gauge cluster and then put in the uh actual decal.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_08: But cutting those little circles was a pain in the ass.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_08: And I finally broke down and bought uh a punch set from um from micromark, all different size steel dowels, and then a little little uh die for them to be in and works a treat if you get them lined up right.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_08: That's the only trick I have.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, not cross-eyed enough to get that lined up well enough.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_08: So right well, there you go.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_08: Hopefully you can't see it.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, well, you can see the gauge is great if you're looking at it from the right side of the car in there because the gauges are all shifted by because of my my my parallax and I going on.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_08: So yeah, but yeah, uh he actually the his little sheet was cool because it would have the gauges laid out as you need to look at the actual dash, and sometimes they were spaced out just right to where if you drilled a hole in the dash for those gauges, you could put that piece of card in the back.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_09: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_08: And then uh yeah, and then he'd have the little radio, not the actual radio itself, but the little transparent piece that would be the radio pointer indicator thing to tell you which station you're on.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_08: Those are always found to be a little too small to be cutting out on that on the thick cardstock that he had.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_08: So it didn't really didn't always work out for me.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_08: So I would cheat and just paint the radio a pale green color.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_08: Yeah, glossy pale green, make it look like it's on.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I got that from Christine the movie.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_08: I'm like, yeah, cool.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_06: You might even be able to do uh uh some of the trick like the aircraft guys do with uh the slime lights on the on the aircraft to get that that on color.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_06: Oh you guys can I think BG might be the only one that knows what I'm talking about.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_06: So what what color?
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_06: Uh it's it's like a like a pale lime greenish.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, anybody that builds the aircraft that may happen to listen to this would probably know what I'm talking about.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_06: Usually they're provided as decals in the modern aircraft kits.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_06: Um, they're basically they're formation lights, so they're not designed to be super duper bright.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_06: So you know what I mean?
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_06: So you might even be able to get slime light decals, formation light decals, and and cut them, trim them to fit.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_06: And yeah.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_07: Neat.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_07: Excellent.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_07: Learn something new every day.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_07: Slime lights.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_07: Slime lights.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_06: Turn on your slime light.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_08: Okay, Jody, what else you got for us?
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_02: All right, so moving on.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_02: So what about um let's talk about all the little bits and bobs now, right?
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_02: So we kind of talked about the paint, sheens, carpet, dash detailing, but we're very fortunate in the world we live in today where we have very good um sponsors of this program, right?
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_02: That pretty much all sell interior door handles, yeah, little bits and bobs.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_02: We'd be remiss to not mention model car garage and some of the other places that still produce photo etch parts and pieces.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_02: You know, I know some of my uh old school guys, you know, um Tim Tim K on his uh YouTube channel a while ago built a GTO uh kit on there, uh 67 GTO, and he used a bunch of different things on the interior detail, and he used some of the old uh photo etch stuff.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_02: So we've got photo etch detailing, we have 3D printed part, detail, door handles, and uh window cranks and all that stuff.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_07: Please do not forget stuff like so Value Gear sells a 125th scale um line of stuff like oil cans, duffel bags, yeah, iglue coolers, like you can put all kinds of that kind of stuff inside a car to add to the interior detail.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_02: Yep, yeah, yep.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_02: So again, you know, some of the interiors, the detail is a little bit weak relative to like a door handle or um a window crank, right?
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_02: So a 3D printed or even a photo etch is enough to kind of make that thing pop off so you can actually see it.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_02: Um obviously 3D printed steering wheels, 3D printed shifters, you know.
- 1:05:21SPEAKER_02: Um like all of us probably I've still got boxes of old styrene parts, you know, just parts boxes down there, you know, of organized parts and pieces that I find that I still go down and search through, you know, for shifters and steering wheels.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_02: And so even though we got 3D printed options, we still have options in the parts box, probably, if you don't have the 3D printed stuff at your veil, you know.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_02: This is true.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_02: This is true.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so yeah, and those are things that are just little things that again accentuate it, you know.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, just changing the steering wheel up, putting a nicer shifter in it.
- 1:05:56SPEAKER_07: Let's not forget 3D printed seat buckles, seat belts.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_07: My arch and my arch nemesis.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_07: The base of my existence.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna I was just gonna mention them.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_02: You know, I've always steered clear the damn seat belts.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_02: But the last couple kits I've done, I've used seatbelts, you know, and I and I didn't for a very long time.
- 1:06:16SPEAKER_02: But you know, our our buddy uh Tim Ryan, you know, he's the master of the little details, the the hat, the magazine on the seat, all that stuff.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_02: I I've always really liked that about his builds, is he incorporates that stuff.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_02: And again, it's out there, it's available, you just gotta go find it.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_02: The seatbelt stuff, you've got you know, Edward, if you can if you can find them, right?
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_02: They have um uh their uh photo etch seat belts that are really, really nice.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_02: Go for racing has some.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_02: I think model car garage, they have some as well.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_02: You can actually go to your local craft store, Walmart, wherever you buy stuff, you can buy eighth-inch ribbon in different colors.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_02: So the seat belts that you can buy, like the gopher racing, they have kind of the standard colors.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_02: But if you wanted something a little bit different, there's all sorts of ribbon that's available.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_02: The eighth inch is a little bit wide to fit the photo etch seat belt kits that you buy, but a nice sharp pair of scissors, you can trim this down really easily.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_02: Just trim the side off and make up your own uh your own seat belts.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_02: Doesn't have to be miles long either, just no, they don't, you know, and they don't have to be placed just perfectly so, you know.
- 1:07:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's a seat belt just kind of drapes over the seat, so making it a little bit realistic and just the way it lays to be mindful of that.
- 1:07:30SPEAKER_02: If it's a show car to show, right, you're gonna probably cross them and make them look a certain way.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_02: But if it's uh you're building kind of an everyday beat-around car, you know, when you get out and unbuckle it, it's just gonna be kind of thrown about, you know.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_02: So again, thinking about the intent and what the look you're trying to get out of it.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_02: Um, I did grab to show you guys, I don't know how often you use these, but Walmart sells different pins.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_02: You can get the coated head pins of different colors, right?
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_02: And these work very well for column shifter.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_02: You can scratch build an actual shifter, which I did in that Rolls-Royce uh Pro Touring car I did.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_02: I use one of these to start with an old base out of the parts box to build the shifter for that because I needed something that was a little bit higher to get up over the seat that a um 3D printed shifter wouldn't do.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_02: So, again, this little box right here is enough to probably last you a lifetime.
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and they're all the same colors too.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_02: And they are, and then they sell, it's tough to see, but they have different lengths of these little push pins.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, and these have a little small little button head on them, and these things work really good.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_02: Where I use these if you wanted to use make an antenna, an exterior antenna on the fender, if you wanted to do um door locks inside the car.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_02: Um, the other place I use these quite often, it's gonna be tough to see, but they're very small.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_02: Is I'll drill out the door lock on the exterior and use these because the door lock is tough to paint or put you know any um bare metal foil on it, just doesn't stick, it's too small.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: So I'll use these guys.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_02: They also sell these what they call a head pin, which are a little bit longer, but it's got a flatter head on it.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_02: So these are three different types of pins that you can use is either a door lock, you could use those as a tire the valve stem, you could use it for a valve stem, you can trim these and use that as a door lock.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_02: So one thing will get you a bunch of different options, and again, for less than$20, you can buy all these pins that are literally gonna last you a lifetime, you know.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_02: Again, if we're looking at trip, you know, tick uh tip tips and tricks, this is a good way to do it.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_02: And oh, by the way, Jason, I've got a bunch of those Edward seat belts over here that you can't find.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_07: You bought them all up, that son of you.
- 1:09:49SPEAKER_07: You scumbone.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_08: Uh, what's cool about the Edward sweet belts?
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_08: If you don't if uh listeners don't know, is they're all pre-painted.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_02: They're all pre-painted.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_02: They're fan.
- 1:09:57SPEAKER_02: I haven't used them yet, but they're fantastic.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_07: So have you had those for a while, or did you find them somewhere?
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_02: No, I bought them a long time ago.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_02: I've had them for a while.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_08: You guys ever done the masking tape seat belt trick?
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_02: No, I haven't.
- 1:10:09SPEAKER_06: No, yeah, I've done it for aircraft.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I tried it, I didn't quite like the look of it because I thought it was too thin, and then somebody put me onto the adhesive bandage tape.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_09: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_08: I have heard that.
- 1:10:23SPEAKER_08: And that stuff is so the adhesive on that is so strong, like literally holds your skin together, that you wherever you put it, it's gonna stay.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_02: Until it's gone, right.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_08: And you can because it's white, you can hit it.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_08: I mean, I've I've cheated, I hit it with a sharpie.
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_08: I needed to make uh uh tie-down straps for something I was working on.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_08: I just got it with an orange sharpie and it looks like the neon orange that you would have for the tie-down straps.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it worked out great.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_08: And because it got the adhesive backing to them, you can drape them onto things and it'll stay where you put it.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_08: So it's kind of awesome.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_08: I did tie downs for a surfboard one time with those as well.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_07: So, how do you attach ends to that?
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_08: Uh well on the surfboard ones, I just wrapped them on an X and then tucked them on the bottom and just left it and glued it to the top of the car.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_08: But uh, I had to make a fib up uh custom buckle type things.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_08: So I just did like this this S curve, really small S curve, uh where the top of the S was actually straightened out, sort of like the Superman symbol.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, and um, and and it was kind of I just was able to slip that through there and then double back it on itself so that it was able to hold on to that.
- 1:11:26SPEAKER_08: It just like like Justin said, it just needed to give it the a hint of the of the of the taste of what we're looking for.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_09: So nice.
- 1:11:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_02: Now I think they sell 3D printed buckles and stuff too, right?
- 1:11:38SPEAKER_02: Is that correct?
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll try to.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I haven't I haven't used any yet.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, I just kind of found the the gopher stuff a little while ago, and I figured I'd give them a shot.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_02: And I use a lot of just the Bob Smith Gold Plus for super glue, non-fogging, and you know, this you basically route it through a little bit of that super glue, fold it back to itself, it dries almost instantly and it doesn't bleed back through.
- 1:12:02SPEAKER_02: It'll crisp it up, like you said earlier, but enough to make it convincing enough, you know.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_02: The Tamiya skyline kit that Jason and I did that was all decals, so it was a little it was a little bit of a challenge.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_02: Similar, you know, you had 3D printed or um photo etch buckles, and then you had to use the decal that you had to cut out, and it was a process again, fairly fairly convincing.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so what else have we missed?
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_02: Stereo stuff.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: So you can buy stereo components 3D printed from Joel.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_02: I know he sells them.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_02: Um, I did some scratch building when we did the um the little fiat's last year.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_02: I made my own speaker grills, and what I did was I used just um evergreen styrene of a certain size, right?
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_02: And basically shaped the uh base of the speaker grill.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_02: And then I used paint strainer with really fine mesh, you know, uh like a paint strainer for automotive paint.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_02: It's plastic or nylon, so all I did was cut out the material and use the Tamiya super thin and just glued it to it.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: So light amount of paint, it actually has the cloth-looking speaker grill on it.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_02: Write that down.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_02: Use that one, everybody.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_02: Uncle Jody just gave you one.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_02: Write that down.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_02: That actually that paint straining material would work really good too for maybe a back of a grill if you wanted to cut in like a vent, you know, like a hood vent or something like that.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_02: So one of the cars that's on the uh the project bench here, you know.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_02: When I do that, I'm gonna probably use that for like mesh material and like a grill.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_02: So it would work really good for that too, and and it's painted.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_07: So yeah, nice.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_07: I I do I have one trick, one single interior trick that I use every once in a while that I thought was genius when I heard about it.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_07: Um so you know a lot of these front bucket seats, they they mount right to the floor.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_07: Just straight flat bottom to the floor.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_07: Paint just a little bit of the bottom all the way around of that seat flat black.
- 1:14:04SPEAKER_07: And once it's in there, it gives you the appearance that there's space under that seat.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: Good idea.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_07: There you go.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_07: So I might not be Professor Jody.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_07: I might not, you know, but I did give you one.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:14:16SPEAKER_02: No, no, no, Professor here.
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_02: I'm just stealing things that I've seen along the way, you know.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_08: That was the thing I started doing recently, also.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_08: So that's awesome.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_02: I think interior, it's a good subject.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_02: So I'm thankful that Jeremy kind of mentioned it, you know, because some of us, again, we see things out there in YouTube land and we pick up from you know the veterans of the hobby, and there's so much great stuff available now.
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_02: Photo etched, 3D printed stuff, flocking, embossing powder.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_02: We've got this uh really thin uh felt material that's available now.
- 1:14:45SPEAKER_02: Um, just the decals that are available, the the adhesives we have, the UV glues.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, it you know, it's a little bit of work, you know.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_02: One thing I will say is I find that Uncle Jody's eyes ain't as good as they used to be, and I use my magnifier for everything.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_02: And working through the magnifier, you know, you can uh really fine-tune those details.
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_02: And even if it's not perfect, if it looks good in the magnifier, it's gonna be perfect, you know, once it's all kind of said and done.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_02: You got lots of options to put detail in your uh your interior.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_02: I can't really think of anything else, you know.
- 1:15:21SPEAKER_02: If anybody has tips or tricks they want to share with us, yes, Mr.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_02: BG.
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_08: I just thought of something.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_08: What if you wanted to make carpeted floor mats for your model car out of sandpaper?
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_08: Paint it up to be the color you want.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, you could do that.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_02: I just thought of that.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_02: You can do either do a decent back or just use flat paper and yeah, Mod Podge or something, probably.
- 1:15:42SPEAKER_02: Some 80 grit, you know 36 grit, yeah.
- 1:15:48SPEAKER_08: It's actually got a boulder on the paper.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_08: I just think about that because they have these little these little slips of uh paper that are um by steady s t-e-di-i.
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_08: You will probably wouldn't know it, Jody, because you can get on Amazon.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_08: But um you get like 400 grit and it's actually got this nice texture.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_08: He throws up the cross.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_08: Uh, but uh, I'm like, you know, if you use it in and it's still usable or whatever, you can want to or want to get rid of some sandpaper, that might be uh fun thing.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_02: Not a bad idea.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it'd be good for uh be good for everybody to share their tips and tricks, you know.
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_02: If you get anything special, you know.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_02: I mean, hopefully it picks something up from this.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, it would it's just four uh muchos here hanging out talking about how we do things, but see there's many ways to do it.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_02: I find for something that would be passed over in years past, I'm trying to spend more time focusing on stuff like the interior detail, you know.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_02: And once you start kind of going down that rabbit hole, there's so much stuff that's available now to just make it pop, you know.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_08: I'm a hundred percent for anything that's gonna drag out my build longer so I don't have to tackle the next ones.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_02: Well, it's the individual components is fun, it's always at the end, is where I get the anxiety of well, I gotta put this thing together and get the glue thumbprint in it and uh on the windshield and everywhere else, right?
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_08: So this this feels realistic.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_08: It's got 10 pounds of photo watch on the interior.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_08: That's right, causing the chassis to sag.
- 1:17:10SPEAKER_08: Now, here's something we didn't quite touch on, but it's the major bane of my existence when it comes to doing interiors, and that's the tub itself.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_08: Interior tub.
- 1:17:21SPEAKER_08: I saw an article in Fine Scale Auto, because it was a little while ago.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_08: Yeah, the author of the I can't recall who it was, the author of the magazine actually was working on the interior tub for a BMW model kit from Hesegawa, and he cut the door sides off, cut the sides of the tub off so that he could detail them and work on the interior better.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_08: And I'm like, dude, that's freaking why didn't I think of that?
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_08: So I've started trying to do that.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_08: It's a little tough to figure out how to do it.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_08: Razor saws need to get involved, but it in and then when you glue it back together, you just do little lugs along the back side there, so you have a nice surface area to to glue everything to.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_08: It allows you to do the the door card detailing so much better.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_08: Like if you have to do the stainless steel that's in there or something like that, with the bare metal foil, some jazz.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_08: But it is man, it just opens up your world because you're not having to get in a weird angle to get the paintbrush in there.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_02: And yeah, a lot easier laying flat on the bench than trying to put your meat paws inside that tub and do the detail.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's what she said.
- 1:18:21SPEAKER_02: Makes sense.
- 1:18:22SPEAKER_06: Meat paws calling yourself Uncle Jody.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_06: I'm starting to get uncomfortable.
- 1:18:26SPEAKER_08: Do you need an adult?
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_08: I wanted to see what you guys thought about cutting off the door card of the uh again.
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_02: Panel liner, you know, if the if the lines are deep enough in the kind of contour of the door in the in the tub, glove box, lines, a little bit of panel liner in there to accentuate that again.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_02: We have more things to do, but yeah, it just it makes it stand out that much more, you know.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_08: I fully agree.
- 1:18:58SPEAKER_06: How hey, how about something a little different than just carpeting and stuff like that?
- 1:19:04SPEAKER_06: Uh sorry.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_06: Yeah, all right, fuck it.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_06: I'm just kidding.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_06: The uh hey, I go with the flow.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_06: No, the um the Baja bug from Iceman.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_06: We didn't talk about utility interiors and weathering possibilities.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_09: Yeah.
- 1:19:23SPEAKER_06: You know, for example, my my interior, I just painted it all.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_06: Actually, it was since it's a German car, I decided to go with uh MiG ammo creme weiss, which is basically the same interior color that the the Germans used on the interior of their tanks, uh, for the interior of my bug, but then dirtied it up with some AK dust effects and some brown panel liners to kind of give it that been driven around on the beach and people getting in and out with sandy shoes, you know.
- 1:19:56SPEAKER_06: It doesn't mean carpeting because it's a hard interior.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_07: Uh photographing this stuff.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_07: I did, yeah.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
- 1:20:04SPEAKER_07: I hope so.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_07: I don't remember seeing a photo of the inside of it, and that sounds very interesting.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_02: Yep, it's a good thought.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_02: We're talking about fancy interiors.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_02: What about just a basic utilitarian interior?
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_06: But this conversation has also gone on for two hours, so I don't know if we want to dive into that.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_02: I told you it'd take a while.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_02: I mean, in detail again, it seems simple in concept, but it really isn't because how much do you want to put in it?
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_02: There's so much stuff available now to make them be just amazing, you know, if it's made to where it's a highlighter center point of the build, you know, instead of just there because it's there, you know.
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_08: So I'll tell you something I love seeing in a model car.
- 1:20:44SPEAKER_08: Oh, it's built like at a show or whatever, is you look at the inside of the car, and on the backseat is a tiny little scale model car box of that model.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I always think that's really fun when somebody does that little that little Easter egg.
- 1:20:57SPEAKER_08: Anyway, that's just my two cents.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_08: But I think Jody think we covered this pretty well.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_08: Thank you very much, sir, for leading us in that one.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_08: Appreciate that.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_08: And Justin, it's only been an hour and 40 minutes because we were on here an hour before you checked in.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it was about 7:30 when we started actually recording.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_08: Uh, I have no idea what that means because I'm in Arizona.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_08: Anyway, um, I'll tell you what, let's talk in metric.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, oh I know.
- 1:21:23SPEAKER_08: Let's go ahead and do a quick commercial spot and we'll be back in just a few moes, and we'll see you then on the other side.

- 1:23:22SPEAKER_08: Thanks for sticking around through that little commercial break there.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_08: Next up we have what's on your bench, and we'll spin the wheel with the missing lug because Mike's not here, and we'll land on Jason.
- 1:23:33SPEAKER_08: Missing lug.
- 1:23:35SPEAKER_07: That is now his new nickname.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_08: Missing lug nut.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_08: The missing lug.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_08: Holy cow, that's amazing.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_08: He can't do missing link.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_08: That's already a model car.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_08: That's a model car.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_02: He's bouncing aimlessly through the Florida Everglades right now.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_07: Yes, he basically is.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_07: What's on my bench?
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_07: Well, as of right now, obviously the Iceman Baja bug is well underway.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_07: Um as I've I've kind of said in a couple of videos now.
- 1:24:05SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna try to allocate my Sunday live time to working on that.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_07: I have a lot of other things that I want to work on at the same time.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_07: And I do have until the end of the year to finish the bug, so I think that's what's gonna happen.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_07: That's gonna be the Sunday, Sunday live theme.
- 1:24:23SPEAKER_07: Other than that, I've got a uh Ravel 69 Camaro that I'm doing a kind of a cool Pro Mods, not Pro Mod, Pro Touring style.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_07: I've got a really sweet hood from Iceman Collections that I I was digging through my stuff and it it was in the bag and it was labeled um prototype.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_07: I don't know if he ever sold it or not, so I'm like, that's pretty cool.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna use that.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_07: And some some 20-inch Steeleys from MCV products, a couple of our sponsors.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_07: That's gonna be a pretty cool build.
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_07: I've got you know like a super B and a Bronco going, and I got all kinds of stuff going on, but not enough time to adequately work on any of it, if that makes sense.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 1:25:02SPEAKER_07: I hear you, yeah.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_07: I hear you.
- 1:25:04SPEAKER_08: Yeah, right on.
- 1:25:05SPEAKER_08: Thank you, sir.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_08: Justin, what's on your bench right now?
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_06: Uh well, I kind of alluded to it in our last section.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_06: It's the Baja bug.
- 1:25:12SPEAKER_06: That and a whole bunch of uh spilled mojo.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_06: Still looking for the uh looking for the groove.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_06: Stella has not found her way back to my apartment yet.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_06: But nah, just you know, when I do have the drive, I I sit down, I work at the bug.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_06: I think uh we're supposed to be getting a nor'easter this weekend, so for the whatever day the kids don't come over here, I might just sit here at the bench and and work on the figures that came with the uh the Baja bug in the dark.
- 1:25:41SPEAKER_06: Because that is getting close.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_06: It's getting close, that car.
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but dude, it's so nice to see you just diving into that, but just sinking your teeth right up to the gums and that thing as you can.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I mean, I was like for it.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_06: So it's a fairly simple kit, it's not you know overly you know easy to get yourself into the weeds with.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_06: Um you know, Joel really designed a really nice kit, put out a really nice kit.
- 1:26:05SPEAKER_06: It's doesn't really need much to make it extra spectacular, it's already there.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_06: Very good.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_06: Yeah, fantastic.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_02: Mr.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_02: Jody, what you got?
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_02: So I just finished up the uh 69 Cobra Jet Mustang.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_02: I haven't posted any final picks.
- 1:26:18SPEAKER_02: I'm waiting to it's official reveal this weekend.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_02: Hopefully, I make it down to uh PatCon.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_02: The weather is rolling in, but um, you know, I don't know what that's gonna do really affect us, other than it's gonna just be heavy rain, you know.
- 1:26:33SPEAKER_02: And it's a three and a half hour trip and heavy rain that could be a little bit ominous, but exhausting.
- 1:26:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that sounds exhausting.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so my hope is to make it down because I really am looking forward to the show, and I'd like to get that down and uh and and kind of unveil it.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_02: So I've got this um Mikey's short track group build, right?
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_02: Or the the Saturday night short track group build.
- 1:26:53SPEAKER_02: I got back on the Gremlin and um I've got the chassis painted, all the individual parts and pieces are painted.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_02: So I've got a little bit of body work to do.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_02: I'm still trying to figure out overall color.
- 1:27:04SPEAKER_02: You know, I bought a bunch of um different NASCAR team decals from what is it, Mike's decals a while ago.
- 1:27:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and uh I'm still trying to kind of figure out what I want to do with that.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about doing kind of something a little bit crazy, but the body is just so small, and there's not a lot of big flat area to put some of the decals, you're just scaled too big.
- 1:27:23SPEAKER_02: So I may just keep it simple and just do a very basic paint job and just door numbers, and it's turned out pretty good.
- 1:27:29SPEAKER_02: I think it'll be decent enough when it's done.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_02: And I'm still looking at six model kits here on my bench that are staring at me in tubs saying, Why haven't you touched me, you bastard?
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_02: So I gotta get back on some of those things.
- 1:27:40SPEAKER_02: I am working on the um Mount Mansfield Scale Model Club, you know, my local club.
- 1:27:45SPEAKER_02: We're doing this uh AFV build.
- 1:27:46SPEAKER_02: So I got that to me uh challenger three that I started a little bit ago.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_02: I got the inclination the other night.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_02: I was sorting through the stash and I pulled out this uh little Mang 172nd scale.
- 1:27:58SPEAKER_02: It's like a rocket launcher.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_02: Type thing, and uh I've got that pretty much built, it's ready for paint, so that should be very easy to do that.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_02: So just a little stuff picking away at it, looking forward to the shows coming up, spending time with my buddies up here, and um yeah, that's it.
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_02: There's there's definitely enough stuff to do over here.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_08: Sounds like it.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_08: Sounds like it.
- 1:28:17SPEAKER_08: It sounds like the the PatCon show should be named the Hope But Don't Nor Easter.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yeah, that's gonna be a bummer if you don't make it because uh yeah.
- 1:28:25SPEAKER_02: I mean it's it's not that I don't want to, it's just what's the rain look like?
- 1:28:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I don't yeah if there was zero cars on the road other than me, my my capability to drive in any weather and or whatever, I'm good with, you know.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_02: But uh people that still want to go 90 when it's uh 100% downpouring rain could be a recipe for disaster, but for all intent and purpose, I'm I'm coming, you know.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_07: I'm right there with you.
- 1:28:49SPEAKER_07: We I have a two and a half hour drive, so a little bit shorter than yours, but if it's poor drain.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_02: It's it's not snow, but I just you don't I don't know the areas very good, right?
- 1:28:59SPEAKER_02: I'm up in the mountains up here.
- 1:29:01SPEAKER_02: So very rarely, unless you're in the valley areas where there's gonna be flooding, you stay away from those.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_02: But just in a city setting, I mean, backed up storm drains is enough to put enough water on the road to where I'm floating off into the oblivion, you know, and I don't want to do that this weekend.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_08: So yeah, we we have some massive storms in uh northern areas Costale, just a little bit north of where we're at, and people were trying to go through the washes, and folks get out their cameras and just stand there and watch them.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_08: And it's like you can see the the water rolling through there is going faster than your car can can handle, and they'll get about halfway through, and then their their Mercedes CL class just starts to float downstream, yeah.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_08: And then we have we we call it the stupid tax because the fire department shows up to save your ass, and then they get a big bill from the from the municipality, yeah, because of the waste of time and energy they had to do in order to save your butt.
- 1:29:56SPEAKER_08: So um, yeah, we call it the stupid tax, and people handily write that check.
- 1:30:01SPEAKER_02: So I mean you get heavy rain, those storm drains can only burn off so much, you know.
- 1:30:06SPEAKER_08: Oh, and there's a lot of underpasses and stuff around here, and yeah, we there there are no storm drains actually here.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_08: The uh there's actually large scooped out areas at in in neighborhoods where the where the supposed is supposed to drain to, and then it becomes a lake, and this is what drives me nuts.
- 1:30:22SPEAKER_08: It becomes a lake, and then some dude will come through there with his jet ski running around there, right?
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_08: Oh, really?
- 1:30:27SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm like, that's awesome, or somebody will be out there with their boogie board running and jumping in there.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_08: I'm like, that's awesome.
- 1:30:32SPEAKER_08: But you know, Mr.
- 1:30:33SPEAKER_08: McLareland down the road there just had his dog do his toilet stuff there yesterday.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 1:30:38SPEAKER_08: And I'm sure he wasn't the only one.
- 1:30:39SPEAKER_08: So enjoy that flush-eating bacteria.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_02: The thing is, people don't realize, you know, if you get under a new car today, the hole underneath that thing is plastic.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_02: Yes, it's got a smooth bottom on it.
- 1:30:50SPEAKER_02: Well, that's what the bottom of a boat's made of a smooth bottom, right?
- 1:30:54SPEAKER_02: So if you and they're low, right?
- 1:30:56SPEAKER_02: Low center of gravity.
- 1:30:57SPEAKER_02: You get that thing in five inches of water, you're gonna go floating down the damn street, you know.
- 1:31:01SPEAKER_02: Yep, exactly.
- 1:31:02SPEAKER_02: So again, I I want for all intent and purpose, I'm gonna make it, but that's the only stuff like that is the only thing that worries me, you know.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_02: So, but I still plan on making it anyway.
- 1:31:11SPEAKER_08: So I'm not usually worried about my own driving skill, I'm usually worried about the person's coming the other direction's driving skill.
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_02: So that's right.
- 1:31:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so Mr.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_08: BG, what's on your bench?
- 1:31:20SPEAKER_08: What are you building, buddy?
- 1:31:21SPEAKER_08: Well, thank you for asking because I almost forgot to talk about myself, which is rare.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_08: Well, I finished that 1966 Buch Wildcat a little while ago.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_08: I still have to do photographs for it so I can post that to all the uh all the internet stuff.
- 1:31:34SPEAKER_08: I brought back out my Toyota rally car so I could start I can continue on with the decals on that because we did polish up the body, it's really pretty, and I'm thinking that I might do some more work on more decal work on this uh this Sunday on the live stream.
- 1:31:49SPEAKER_08: But I also I also have a uh Volkswagen Beetle that's been all mocked up with the white glue.
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_08: Don't say anything, Justin.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_08: But uh I have all the mock-up stuff done for that, and I really like the fitment of it, so I'm not gonna take it apart again and then start doing the sanding on the roll cage and stuff like that, and then get ready because uh, like I mentioned before, I I don't want to do that at the bench.
- 1:32:10SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna put on a mask and do that outside, uh just waiting for the weather to get like okay-ish so I don't die.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_08: But uh do that sanding outside there with a mask on so I don't I don't get the cancers.
- 1:32:21SPEAKER_08: And then um I'm working on unfortunately it's an armored vehicle.
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_08: This is a car uh thing, but I'm working on the M109 self-propelled howitzer, and it's the worst kit in the world.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_08: And why is it the worst kit in the world?
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_08: Well, a free kit will always cost you more than a kit if you just bought it, because now I'm like, oh, I haven't spent any money on it.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_08: I can get PhotoWatch, I can do uh frual model white metal tracks, I can do this, I can do a barrel.
- 1:32:44SPEAKER_08: So now I've actually put more into the model kit than the model kit is actually worth.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's why it's the worst thing in the world.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_08: So, but it is a project that I'm really taking to heart because uh I was talking to the IPMS guys that were at the store doing their build session last weekend.
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_08: A couple guys are like, Yeah, you know, um life's too short for shitty kids, that kind of thing.
- 1:33:05SPEAKER_08: It's like, well, that's debatable.
- 1:33:07SPEAKER_08: But this is an opportunity for me to try working with PhotoWatch for the first time, to try working with workable tracks, as they call it, because they're all individually linked, you have to put them together just to see what it's like.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_08: And at the very least, even if this doesn't turn out as well as I hope it does, at the very least, I have information I can impart to customers when they ask questions about this kind of thing.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_08: So I'm chalking it up to learning new skills and product research for the store.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_08: So that's my uh argument there.
- 1:33:38SPEAKER_08: I have I have a like you, Jody, I have a dozen other things I should be working on or sitting behind me that's that's begging for attention.
- 1:33:44SPEAKER_08: But those are the the few I'm gonna list right now because this is getting to be a long podcast.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_08: So uh I tell you what, let's um let's take another quick break and we'll come back with upcoming shows.

- 1:36:37unknown: That was perfect.
- 1:36:39SPEAKER_08: Alright.
- 1:36:40SPEAKER_08: Upcoming shows.
- 1:36:41SPEAKER_08: Jason, what have you got for us, my friend?
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_07: Upcoming shows.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_07: Alright, I've got uh quite a list.
- 1:36:47SPEAKER_07: A couple of these first shows are coming up quick.
- 1:36:50SPEAKER_07: The first one on the list is gonna be SamCon 26.
- 1:36:53SPEAKER_07: That's coming up Saturday, October 3rd.
- 1:36:55SPEAKER_07: That's close.
- 1:36:56SPEAKER_07: That's like right there.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_10: Yeah.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_07: That's held at the Durand High School, 200 West South Street, Durand, Illinois.
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_07: This is something really cool that my our friend Keith McGregor has been helping out with.
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_07: They have a B-17E flying fortress desert rat fundraiser.
- 1:37:17SPEAKER_07: What this is is you can bring your B-17E to the show and put it in a specific class to be to be judged.
- 1:37:25SPEAKER_07: Cost 10 bucks, and all of the proceeds from that class goes to a crew of individuals who are restoring a legit B-17E desert rat.
- 1:37:35SPEAKER_08: Fantastic.
- 1:37:37SPEAKER_08: That is so cool.
- 1:37:38SPEAKER_06: It is not just that that special interest group build is not just for the E models, it's all B17 models.
- 1:37:45SPEAKER_06: The Fs, the G's, which are the most common, but yeah, not just the E's.
- 1:37:49SPEAKER_07: Not just the E's.
- 1:37:51SPEAKER_06: They're restoring an E, but it's not just the E's.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_07: They're restoring an E.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_07: It's not just the E's.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_07: It can be any B-17.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_07: Cool.
- 1:37:59SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_07: Exactly.
- 1:38:01SPEAKER_07: Uh, go check that out.
- 1:38:04SPEAKER_07: And then the very next day, October 4th, is the Classic Plastic 32nd Annual Model Car Exhibition.
- 1:38:13SPEAKER_07: That is held at the Lawrence, Massachusetts Elks Hall.
- 1:38:17SPEAKER_07: The address for that is 652 Andover Street, Lawrence Mass.
- 1:38:22SPEAKER_07: The theme classes for this year's show is 32 Ford in honor of the 32nd annual show in long roof vehicles, station wagons, vans, but not SUVs.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_07: Says it right on the fly.
- 1:38:37SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 1:38:38SPEAKER_07: But not SUVs.
- 1:38:39SPEAKER_07: Let's see.
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_07: Then next is gonna be Granite Con 33, our friend Mac Johnson.
- 1:38:46SPEAKER_07: Had him on our uh sideshow.
- 1:38:48SPEAKER_07: That's Sunday, October 18th, hosted by the Granite State Modelers Club.
- 1:38:53SPEAKER_07: That is the Ware Middle School, Route 114 Ware, New Hampshire.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_07: That's gonna be a cool show.
- 1:39:00SPEAKER_07: You'll see Jody and I and a bunch of other of the cronies.
- 1:39:04SPEAKER_07: We're all gonna be there.
- 1:39:06SPEAKER_07: Come say hi.
- 1:39:07SPEAKER_07: Let's see.
- 1:39:08SPEAKER_07: After that, the spirit of speed.
- 1:39:11SPEAKER_07: That's gonna be November 8th.
- 1:39:12SPEAKER_07: Held at the NHRA Motorsports Museum, Fairplex Gate 1, 1101 McKinley Avenue, Watson Pomona, California.
- 1:39:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah, buddy.
- 1:39:25SPEAKER_07: I'm going.
- 1:39:26SPEAKER_07: The theme for this year is air-cooled NHRA racing, honoring the Gallery of Speed while celebrating the 75th anniversary of NHRA.
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_07: That is a lot to say in one theme.
- 1:39:41SPEAKER_07: You did well.
- 1:39:42SPEAKER_07: That's well.
- 1:39:43SPEAKER_07: Okay, and last but not least, my buddy Mickey Gerace, he sent over this flyer.
- 1:39:49SPEAKER_07: This is the 2026 model car challenge presented by the Liars Club.
- 1:39:55SPEAKER_07: That's Long Island Auto Replica Society, November 14th, held at the Freeport Rec Center, 130 East Merrimack Road, Freeport, New York.
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_07: See, the theme is American Made and Gassers.
- 1:40:10SPEAKER_07: So that's gonna be cool.
- 1:40:11SPEAKER_07: Sweet.
- 1:40:12SPEAKER_07: Love a gasser.
- 1:40:15SPEAKER_07: Is all I have for this round of upcoming shows.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_07: Excellent.
- 1:40:20SPEAKER_02: I do want to um just mention, so as you said, the uh Sam Khan show, right, that's coming up, uh, with Mr.
- 1:40:27SPEAKER_02: Keith McGregor and that group.
- 1:40:29SPEAKER_02: So we had uh paid for the uh one of the award packages, and he sent us a nice handwritten note back.
- 1:40:35SPEAKER_02: I received it in the mail yesterday.
- 1:40:36SPEAKER_02: He sent a sticker and a uh kind of a shop card, if you will, of their club.
- 1:40:41SPEAKER_02: And he says, uh Jody, thanks to all for your donation, trophy sponsor to SamCon 26.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_02: You all have been so kind and supportive to us, much appreciated.
- 1:40:51SPEAKER_02: Keith McGregor.
- 1:40:53SPEAKER_08: That's awesome.
- 1:40:53SPEAKER_02: Thank you, Keith.
- 1:40:54SPEAKER_06: Keith also that awful aggressively, yeah, exactly.
- 1:40:57SPEAKER_07: Well, that's how it was kind of sharp.
- 1:40:59SPEAKER_07: So I don't know if it was, I mean it wasn't Keith McGregor.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_07: UhGregor.
- 1:41:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah, but anyway, uh Keith reached out to me too the other night to say thank you.
- 1:41:08SPEAKER_07: And uh he's been I just want to throw this out there that he is the hardest working guy in the model car business segment of this hobby.
- 1:41:18SPEAKER_07: Holy smokes.
- 1:41:21SPEAKER_07: He's flooding Facebook with thank yous and acknowledgments for all of the people that have stepped up to sponsor the show.
- 1:41:28SPEAKER_07: I've seen multiple thank yous for our friends uh Joel and Iceman and VCG Resins, as well as dozens of other people that he's been thanking over the past few weeks.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_07: He's got a lot of he got God hand to send him some stuff.
- 1:41:42SPEAKER_07: That's saying something.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_07: That's a big deal.
- 1:41:45SPEAKER_07: That's a big deal.
- 1:41:46SPEAKER_02: If you're in that area, go go to that show, go support those guys.
- 1:41:49SPEAKER_02: They're doing a great thing over there.
- 1:41:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah, yes, go support those guys, and I want to say, congratulations, Mr.
- 1:41:54SPEAKER_07: McGregor.
- 1:41:55SPEAKER_07: You've turned this into quite the success, I believe.
- 1:41:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I believe so.
- 1:41:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I'm kind of wondering if we might need to pick we we should pick him up as a PR guy.
- 1:42:03SPEAKER_08: There you go.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_09: Possibly, yeah.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_08: Maybe just saying, all right, cool.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_08: Thank you very much, Jason.
- 1:42:10SPEAKER_08: Appreciate that.
- 1:42:11SPEAKER_08: And now, Jody with the new kids.
- 1:42:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'll keep it brief.
- 1:42:16SPEAKER_02: I only had a few written down.
- 1:42:17SPEAKER_02: It's been uh it was a bit of a crazy week this week.
- 1:42:20SPEAKER_02: I'll just leave it at that.
