- 0:00Welcome to another episode of Founders Unfiltered.
- 0:03I am Bradley Jacobs, I'm your host and the founder and CEO of
- 0:08Mylance. Before we jump in, like come
- 0:10check out our amazing new product.
- 0:12It's getting better by the day. It helps you show up on LinkedIn
- 0:15authentically, genuinely, consistently with
- 0:19accountability. It's really amazing.
- 0:20So come check it out. Today's episode is a bit
- 0:24different because I'm actually the guest.
- 0:27I sat down with my friend Ty Hammond.
- 0:30He has a podcast on true leadership and we really went
- 0:35deep and I I shared stories from my past and how I got to be
- 0:40where I am today and some really pivotable moments that
- 0:43completely changed how I look at business, how I look at like
- 0:46really getting what I want. That's kind of the core of what
- 0:49I talked about. And then some of my other
- 0:52lessons and how I think I hold my business back as a founder,
- 0:55my growing edge and on down the line, including stories from
- 0:59Uber, a $20,000 mistake I made on the third week of my job and
- 1:04a lot of the inner work that I've done that I truly believe
- 1:07is the reason that my Lance is still going.
- 1:10So if you've ever felt like fear is the thing that's holding you
- 1:14back or quietly running the show, this episode's for you.
- 1:18Let's get into it. Welcome to the True Leadership
- 1:20Podcast, where we explore the essence of leadership beyond
- 1:23tactics and performance by sitting down with executives to
- 1:26hear what matters most to them. I'm your host, Ty Hammond.
- 1:30Today's guest is Bradley Jacobs. Bradley is the founder and CEO
- 1:35of Mylance, a platform helping founders and consultants build
- 1:39authentic, credibility driven content on LinkedIn to attract
- 1:42the right clients. A former fractional COO and
- 1:47early operator at Uber, Bradley has launched and scaled markets
- 1:50across rides, Eats and freight, contributing to Uber Freight's
- 1:55rapid path to a billion dollar valuation.
- 1:59Since 2018, he has focused on making the founder journey more
- 2:02sustainable by turning expertise into trust at scale.
- 2:06A Duke University engineering graduate, Bradley blends
- 2:10operational rigor with sharp positioning strategy to help
- 2:13entrepreneurs grow through clarity, consistency, and
- 2:17authentic visibility. It's my pleasure to have Bradley
- 2:20here with me today. Welcome to the show, Bradley.
- 2:23Thanks for having me. Every leader, of course, has a
- 2:27beginning. I love starting with this
- 2:29question here on this show. Of course, who we are as leaders
- 2:33at work and in life starts taking shape long before we
- 2:37advance to any executive position of leadership, to any
- 2:41workplace even. Who is someone from your early
- 2:44life or an early experience that you really feel like shaped the
- 2:47kind of leader in the the person that you are today?
- 2:51Like childhood, early life or early career life or I can go
- 2:54anywhere. Wherever, whatever comes up for
- 2:57you there, anything that you feel like you know has shaped
- 3:00the the person and the leader that you are today is going to
- 3:03be relevant here. My first boss at Uber, she's an
- 3:08incredible woman and there's so much I could say about her.
- 3:13The biggest thing that really shaped me was she was so
- 3:18invested in my growth and success.
- 3:21Like it felt so much like that was paramount more than the
- 3:25business performance and all the shit we were, you know, graded
- 3:29on, if you will. It was like, I want Bradley to
- 3:32win And, and look, I made my fair share of mistakes.
- 3:36And she, yeah, I, I once actually, I made a mistake that
- 3:41cost us like 20 grand And it was, I remember it was like my
- 3:43third week at the company. I was like, Oh my God, I'm like,
- 3:46this is this is it, right? And the only thing I could do
- 3:49was just come clean. I was like, hey, this is what
- 3:51happened. I literally just misread a
- 3:53document and didn't check a thing, whatever.
- 3:55And, and she was like, cool, did you learn your lesson?
- 3:58Like, are you good? Like, you learned what not to
- 4:01do. And I'm like, yeah, like I'm
- 4:03going to be a lot more thoughtful about, you know,
- 4:05sops. And she was like, OK, great,
- 4:07let's move on. And I just, I'll just never
- 4:10forget that moment of she cared about me.
- 4:14She she like saw I was already taking it hard.
- 4:16I knew my, you know, I learned my lesson.
- 4:18And she was like, cool, we got bigger shit to worry about.
- 4:20This is fine. I know you're in responsibility
- 4:22of it. And it was the first time in my
- 4:24life where I got promoted without asking for it.
- 4:28You know, like every time after and every time before it was,
- 4:32I'm fighting tooth and nail. I'm arguing my case.
- 4:34And, and she surprised me with one.
- 4:37Like, I didn't even know it was on the table, frankly.
- 4:39And all of a sudden I was managing A-Team and, and I could
- 4:42go on and on about the things that she supported me through,
- 4:45but she showed me what leadership could look like.
- 4:49And I feel like I've just taken that forward with me ever.
- 4:51Since first of all, I love that story that you shared.
- 4:54I'm curious because I think it's it's really, really powerful.
- 4:58I often, you know, I think about care and caring being one of the
- 5:01things we can't bake and it's so essential to leadership.
- 5:05What are some of the the, you know, the ways that you knew
- 5:10that she actually cared about you?
- 5:12You gave that one story, of course, but what are some of the
- 5:14other ways that came through and how she LED that really helped
- 5:17you to know that? That's a good question.
- 5:19I mean, part of it is energetic, right?
- 5:21It, it, it's even in the little things and the questions she
- 5:24asked. And it's like, yes, the end of
- 5:26the day, we are working for a business.
- 5:28The business gets to win, right? Like that is what we're here to
- 5:31do. But it was like, how are you
- 5:33doing? And caring about me personally
- 5:37and that energetic feel of like we're in this together even
- 5:40though she was my boss. Like we're A-Team and we have
- 5:42each other's back right there. There's such a feeling that I
- 5:46got from her that I just didn't get in the past from other
- 5:49bosses. She cares about my well-being.
- 5:52She cares about my growth. I think that's a really big one.
- 5:55She's like, what do you want to create in your life?
- 5:59And asking that question about where I want to go so that she
- 6:02could give me opportunities to help me learn the skills I
- 6:06needed to learn, experience the things I wanted to experience so
- 6:08that I could move along that journey.
- 6:11I mean, that's so many bosses are like, all right, what needs
- 6:13to get done goals to hit, you know, projects, OK, Rs all this
- 6:17stuff. And she was like, how do you
- 6:18want to develop as a leader? Who like where do you want?
- 6:21And and so having my North star in mind for her, it's also how
- 6:26you get the best out of me, right?
- 6:27I busted my ass for her, right, because she I felt seen by her.
- 6:33I felt heard by her. She was giving me these
- 6:35opportunities. I'm like, I'm going to work my
- 6:36ass off so that I get it. Just like it all works.
- 6:40It's like a win, win, win, right?
- 6:41The business win, she wins, I win.
- 6:43That was going to be my next question and take it to the, you
- 6:46know, the place of, you know, how, how is it that Uber
- 6:49benefited from her caring about you so much?
- 6:54You know, and I think this is the piece that you know,
- 6:56especially, you know, through your experience and it's so it's
- 6:59so obvious and apparent how impactful this was to you.
- 7:02So I think it'd be really worthwhile to to stop on this
- 7:05for a moment because it's not just about you feeling good
- 7:08about you. It's also about like, you know,
- 7:10how did that benefit the business, right?
- 7:12How did that show up for for? Uber, I was loyal as hell,
- 7:15right? I was in crazy ownership over
- 7:18the business performance and that's it was one of the key
- 7:22values of Uber at the time it was called be an owner, not a
- 7:26renter, right? You are in ownership of your
- 7:30city, you know, because you were pretty much like siloed, like
- 7:33you own the city, right? I was originally started with
- 7:36Raleigh, NC. So I was like Raleigh, Durham
- 7:38and Chapel Hill are mine and I am solely responsible for the
- 7:41performance and whatever the hell that takes, I get to do.
- 7:45And that at the beginning we didn't have support agents, so I
- 7:48was responding to somewhere between 500 and 1000 driver
- 7:52emails a week. And our biggest times, as you
- 7:55can imagine, are Saturday, Friday and Saturday night from
- 7:59like 11:00 PM to 2:00 in the morning.
- 8:01All right, people leave the bars.
- 8:03So you, you bet your ass I was in front of the computer for a
- 8:05lot of those nights or taking shifts or switching off
- 8:08whatever. Valentine's Day, Halloween, New
- 8:11Year's Eve, those are the biggest days and times for Uber.
- 8:16So from a output outcome in the business, they got me as a full
- 8:21owner of like, I am responsible for this and I'm going to treat
- 8:26it like like it's my family, my life.
- 8:29And I did. And I was like, this is mine and
- 8:31I, I am responsible and I will make this.
- 8:33I will make it work. I will make this happen.
- 8:35It's such a great example. I always, you know, I think of
- 8:37the the adage, you know, you can tell people what to do, but you
- 8:40can't but tell them to want to do it.
- 8:42You know, that's that that's where leadership comes in.
- 8:45It's such a thank you for expounding of it.
- 8:47I think it's, you know, helpful to whoever is going to listen
- 8:49there. Of course, you know, this is the
- 8:51true leadership podcast. I'm curious, what is true
- 8:54leadership mean to you? What makes a true leader in your
- 8:58eyes? There's a few things that come
- 9:00to mind. The the first one is actually
- 9:04not being needed. It's like there's a value in
- 9:09hiring the right people, setting them up for success, empowering
- 9:12them. You get to set the vision and
- 9:14the North star as the leader. But then you're basically like,
- 9:17I'm hopefully not the smartest person in the room in any one of
- 9:21these aspects. I want to hire someone smarter
- 9:23than me in marketing and sales and OPS and product and finance
- 9:27on down the line so that you guys go do your jobs and I'll
- 9:30just be here to support you. It's like almost like reverse,
- 9:34right? So I, I, that's how I, I think
- 9:37of like almost like bottoms up leadership, like how can I push
- 9:39them to, to be the best that they can be at their job and
- 9:43their expertise? And I really hope I don't know
- 9:46their stuff better than they do. You know, I think that's a huge
- 9:50part of leadership. You get to get your ego out of
- 9:52the way, right? It's not about you being needed.
- 9:55It's not about you being the smartest.
- 9:56It's not about you being the know it all, like, you know,
- 9:59just cuz you're CEO whatever. So I really love that principle
- 10:04of leadership. And then I do think to what we
- 10:07talked about earlier is understanding what motivates
- 10:11people because it's not the same thing.
- 10:14It's not everyone's not motivated by money and power and
- 10:17titles and whatever. It's just not true.
- 10:19I remember I'm going to tell you a quick story.
- 10:20I earlier, he's only here with me, but I had ACTO at my lands
- 10:24for four years and he was in South America.
- 10:28And so, you know, I only got to see him so often, but he was an
- 10:32incredible, incredible value out of the company.
- 10:34And I loved, loved working with him.
- 10:37And I at one point sent him a random bonus like I just, it
- 10:41wasn't like bonus time or anything like that.
- 10:43I was like, you know what, like I really appreciate the value
- 10:45that you're bringing. So here's, here's a check and I
- 10:49wrote a nice note alongside it. And a few months later we are at
- 10:52an off site. We're down in Mexico.
- 10:54And I asked him, I was like, how what was it like to receive
- 10:57that? And he's like, probably your
- 10:59letter meant so much to me. And I was like, OK, great.
- 11:05Like, what about the check? You know, like I thought you, I
- 11:08thought you'd be like really excited about the money,
- 11:10especially, you know, down in South America.
- 11:12It just goes so much further, right?
- 11:13And he's like, yeah, that was nice.
- 11:15But like, the letter really, like, touched my heart and
- 11:18really made me feel seen in the value that I'm adding here.
- 11:22And I was just kind of like, mind blown in the moment of
- 11:24just, like, yeah, still people appreciate money.
- 11:27Like, send them money. We have to, like, pay for our
- 11:28lives here. But he really just wanted to be
- 11:31acknowledged. Like, that's what really meant
- 11:33the most to him. And when I asked him what really
- 11:35motivates him to work hard at my Lance, it was creating software
- 11:39that really changes people's lives, that really impacts
- 11:42people. That's really what mattered to
- 11:45him. So getting to know your people
- 11:48in a way that's deeper, that's a, that's a deep level.
- 11:51What's important to them? What do they care about?
- 11:53What are their families like? What are they going through?
- 11:55I mean, you want to keep people forever.
- 11:57I think that's the way you do. It, you know, but I really love
- 12:00that, you know, I'm curious, curious to go a little bit
- 12:04deeper with that motivation question.
- 12:05You know, there is, of course, like just getting to know people
- 12:08you know personally. Do you have a particular, you
- 12:13know, what's your way of actually getting to?
- 12:14What motivates someone? If you just like, go straight
- 12:17out asking them? Are you getting to know it sort
- 12:20of through the lines? I'm curious.
- 12:22It's got to be both in my opinion.
- 12:23I think asking upfront, you know, in your first few weeks
- 12:26with someone like, hey, maybe even in the interview process,
- 12:29like what motivates you? What are you excited about?
- 12:31And then, you know, checking in, there's, there's one on ones, in
- 12:34my opinion, are not times for giving the updates and all these
- 12:38projects, right? That's what your OPS meetings
- 12:40for marketing meeting, whatever it is your one-on-one time is.
- 12:43How's it going? What do you like about your
- 12:46work? What do you not like about your
- 12:48work? Like, what do you, you know, I
- 12:49had my, even my VA recently. I was like scale of 1 to 10.
- 12:52How much do you enjoy working here, right?
- 12:54How motivated are you? What's what tasks do you hate
- 12:57doing? Right?
- 12:59Like really take, like most people don't ask those questions
- 13:02because it's like taking time out of your, your busy day to,
- 13:06to ask. And so I think you got to check
- 13:09in and consistently right, maybe at least once 1/4 with really
- 13:14the deeper questions. And ideally you're one on ones
- 13:16like every week, every other week.
- 13:18But even, you know, deeper questions like, Hey, I really
- 13:21want to check in. You told me last time that your
- 13:23North Star was this. Is that still true or like where
- 13:27do you want to be in a year, three years, five years, 10
- 13:29years? Like what's important to you and
- 13:31then cool, what skills do you want that's going to help you
- 13:33get there? I mean, really like get to know
- 13:35them and check in, but I'm just ask.
- 13:39I'm such a fan. I'm just like ask the question.
- 13:42Yeah, You know, you can have, you can sort of tell through
- 13:45people's stories. I actually was before we even
- 13:47got to this place of the motivation when you were sharing
- 13:50in your first answer. I was like, oh, I bet Bradley
- 13:53tell me if this is is too often over.
- 13:55But Brad, one of Bradley's big motivations is ownership of like
- 14:01owning his own work. And I know it is for me too.
- 14:03And I wouldn't find that too. You know, it may be very similar
- 14:06for a lot of entrepreneurs across the board as just like
- 14:10really being empowered to own that.
- 14:12Knowing that is a motivation. Yeah.
- 14:14I mean, your work's a reflection of you.
- 14:16I think it's really important that it's not your identity that
- 14:20that's a that's a trap to not get into.
- 14:24But you know, what I put out there is a reflection of me and
- 14:28it's not necessarily from an ego perspective.
- 14:30It's AI want I'm here to impact people.
- 14:33If I didn't care about impacting people, there's a million other
- 14:36ways for me to make money. That's probably a hell of a lot
- 14:38easier than I'm doing right now, frankly.
- 14:39Like just be totally honest. But that's not my main driver in
- 14:43the world. It's important, but it's not my
- 14:44main one. So I'm here to impact people.
- 14:48And me putting a bunch of bullshit online and, you know,
- 14:50with typos or just like bad quality or product that sucks or
- 14:54whatever, that's not gonna help anybody.
- 14:57And that's a wrap on today's episode.
- 14:59Really hope that you got some value, you learned something,
- 15:03resonate with something that I shared.
- 15:05If anything hit home, the fear stuff, the ownership mindset,
- 15:08the inner work. I really would love to hear from
- 15:11you. You like shoot me a message on
- 15:12LinkedIn. Come check us out at my Lance.
