Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Religious leaders' messages work better without politics
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Trump's at war with the pope again, this time over Iran.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Last time it was Gaza. Usually the pontiff is a
- 0:06Speaker 1: bit more low.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Key, you know, just cruising around praying, kissing babies in
- 0:11Speaker 2: the white Robin, the popemobile, but like Batman, but less cool.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Not Leo, no our Leo has spoken out telling Trump
- 0:19Speaker 1: to end the war and saying he does not fear
- 0:22Speaker 1: the president. This is a humanitarian appeal, no doubt about it,
- 0:26Speaker 1: but its delivery is a little more political than past
- 0:29Speaker 1: statements because of the way the US President has been
- 0:32Speaker 1: name checked personally. There's nothing newsworthy about a pope calling
- 0:36Speaker 1: for peace. Pope's gone do what Pope's gone do, and
- 0:39Speaker 1: we all want peace. But religious leaders are doing more
- 0:42Speaker 1: of this getting political. We've had vickers and nappies chaining
- 0:46Speaker 1: themselves to Nicola Willis's electric office. Remember that, We've had
- 0:49Speaker 1: priests supposing Axe Treaty bill. Ten church groups held an
- 0:53Speaker 1: all night vigil at Saint Paul's Cathedral to protest the
- 0:57Speaker 1: Coalition government's move on orders. Deborah Coddington, former Acting p
- 1:02Speaker 1: made quite a relevant observation about this in the spin
- 1:05Speaker 1: off last week. She said, instead of showboating and hand
- 1:08Speaker 1: ringing and virtue signaling. Churches should start paying rates to
- 1:12Speaker 1: local bodies, sell some of those very valuable assets that
- 1:16Speaker 1: they currently rent out. That it raised enough money to
- 1:19Speaker 1: house the homeless who sleep on the streets right now,
- 1:21Speaker 1: problem solved. So why don't they do that the Vatican
- 1:25Speaker 1: because it's got a small population to see the Vatican
- 1:27Speaker 1: huge tithings, eighteenth wealthiest nation in the world per capita,
- 1:31Speaker 1: huge real estate portfolio. In fact, media reports vary, but
- 1:35Speaker 1: anywhere between seventy three and two hundred and fifty billion
- 1:38Speaker 1: dollars worth of real estate, thank you, very much, more
- 1:41Speaker 1: than the combined wealth of all the billionaires of this
- 1:43Speaker 1: country has ever known, that's for sure. And you can
- 1:47Speaker 1: see how this starts to look if they start to
- 1:49Speaker 1: get too political hypocritical, like the Salvation Army, Amnesty International.
- 1:55Speaker 1: You know, when they go beyond just calling out poverty
- 1:57Speaker 1: and start advocating for things like wealth Tank, it just
- 2:02Speaker 1: rubs people the wrong way. Personally, I think the less
- 2:04Speaker 1: politically religious leader, the more effective their message. Is nothing
- 2:09Speaker 1: sacred anymore, that it seems not not in Pope Leo's world.
