- 0:00Speaker 1: I spent the weekend in Minnesota. Sentence I never know,
- 0:04Speaker 1: I knew I would say.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Minesa.
- 0:08Speaker 1: So my mom's family was having a family reunion. This
- 0:12Speaker 1: is her dad's side of the family. What town Duluth,
- 0:18Speaker 1: And so my mom's family comes from that part of
- 0:23Speaker 1: the country. There was a contingent that moved west to
- 0:26Speaker 1: seek their fame and fortune in California, and a contingent
- 0:29Speaker 1: that moved east to seek their fame and fortune there.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And a group that just stayed in like Iowa and Minnesota.
- 0:38Speaker 3: How many of them moved east? I remember hearing about
- 0:41Speaker 3: your uncle, this uncle Bud, the pianist singer.
- 0:46Speaker 1: He lived in He lived in New York. That was
- 0:49Speaker 1: That was my mom's mom's side of the family. That
- 0:51Speaker 1: was a different side of the family. This is her
- 0:53Speaker 1: dad's side of the Russells. And we all convened at
- 1:00Speaker 1: a cousin whose name is Hans. There is a German
- 1:03Speaker 1: wing to this family tree, a German sprout to this
- 1:07Speaker 1: family tree. But we stayed in this place called Larsmont
- 1:12Speaker 1: Cottages on Lake Superior, which is just gorgeous.
- 1:16Speaker 2: On the shores.
- 1:17Speaker 1: And what's it called Larsmont Cottages.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Have you got pictures of that, or.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I did not give those to key. But so the
- 1:27Speaker 1: night first night we get there, there's a bonfire and
- 1:30Speaker 1: we're just kind of getting reacquainted with each other and
- 1:33Speaker 1: we're making plans for the next day and what should
- 1:35Speaker 1: we do the next day? And somebody says, oh, I
- 1:38Speaker 1: saw in the lobby where we checked in, there's a
- 1:43Speaker 1: sign that says you shouldn't miss the sunrise over Lake Superior,
- 1:47Speaker 1: So we should all wake up to watch the sunrise.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And then somebody else said, well, we need coffee. Where
- 1:54Speaker 1: are we going to get coffee? And this same person said, oh,
- 1:57Speaker 1: there's a sign in the lobby that said they'll deliver
- 2:00Speaker 1: cappuccino to your cottage. We're like, fantastic, We'll have cappuccino
- 2:05Speaker 1: delivered while we watched the sunrise. So I went to bed,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and I, being the dutiful rule follower person that I am,
- 2:14Speaker 1: figured out what time the sun was supposed to rise,
- 2:16Speaker 1: and I set my alarm and I got up and
- 2:18Speaker 1: I went outside. Yeah what, no, No, nobody, nobody else's to.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Watch the utiful sunrise.
- 2:29Speaker 3: These are individual cottages, and you're expecting people to come
- 2:32Speaker 3: out on their front stoops their porches.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Yeah, that, well, we were all going to reconvene at
- 2:37Speaker 1: the same spot where we were the night before. Finally,
- 2:40Speaker 1: my sister Carrie came out. She made it out, and
- 2:43Speaker 1: then a cousin Mark. But there were supposed to be
- 2:46Speaker 1: like twenty people coming out.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Watch a family of liars.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and then somebody said, well, how do we get
- 2:52Speaker 1: those cappuccinos delivered here so we can watch the sunrise?
- 2:57Speaker 1: So my sister calls the front desk and she said,
- 3:00Speaker 1: oh gosh, oh, you must have seen our satirical wall
- 3:04Speaker 1: of signs.
- 3:06Speaker 2: What we hat?
- 3:07Speaker 1: Oh gosh, you have a satiric funny signs in the lobby.
- 3:11Speaker 1: That's Oh, it's not we don't deliver cappuccino. That's a joke.
- 3:15Speaker 1: It's a joke. What we also discovered was a joke
- 3:20Speaker 1: is getting up in the morning to watch the sunrise
- 3:23Speaker 1: because it's foggy and you can't see this.
- 3:26Speaker 2: So we were tricked. They knew it would be foggy.
- 3:29Speaker 1: They were trick.
- 3:30Speaker 2: So this is that Minnesota sense of humor.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Oh it's not funny, Bill, I wasn't laughing at all.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Oh, you just don't understand the Minnesota's sense of humor.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's our satirical wall of signs. And there's no coffee,
- 3:46Speaker 1: there's no sunrise. You're just standing out in the fog
- 3:50Speaker 1: with no You fell for it, I don't.
- 3:54Speaker 2: It's a knee slapper, that's what that is for this. Okay.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I'm not from here.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I don't know that it's foggy every morning.
- 4:01Speaker 2: I don't get the reference.
- 4:03Speaker 3: I would I would have I would have been you
- 4:06Speaker 3: know what I would have said on the phone to
- 4:08Speaker 3: the person.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You know what. I don't like you people.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And oh, by the way, how do you say the
- 4:14Speaker 1: word s a U N A s a U.
- 4:19Speaker 2: N A sauna? Sauna?
- 4:21Speaker 1: No, it's a sauna. We all have a sauna here
- 4:25Speaker 1: the Largemont Cottages. There there are multiple saunas for you
- 4:28Speaker 1: available for use. I did not use the sauna.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Why not?
- 4:32Speaker 1: Well, I didn't bring a bathing suit.
- 4:36Speaker 2: You have to all.
- 4:37Speaker 1: They have them for sale in the lobby. If you
- 4:39Speaker 1: want to buy one, you can take a sound.
- 4:41Speaker 3: It's our it's our wall of satirical bathing suits.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But so then we went to.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Cousin check out times at eleven a m. Is that
- 4:50Speaker 2: is that satirical is.
- 4:52Speaker 1: On a satirical wall or a different wall so we
- 4:55Speaker 1: went to cousin Hans's farm for the reunion. Does he
- 5:00Speaker 1: farm there, Well, it's it's just it's just land. It's
- 5:03Speaker 1: he doesn't do anything with it. It's just trees. It's
- 5:06Speaker 1: just a beautiful and in the trees. And this is
- 5:10Speaker 1: one of the pictures I sent. Uh is a a
- 5:14Speaker 1: shadowy figure in the trees. Oh area, it's a it's
- 5:19Speaker 1: bigfoot that they had.
- 5:22Speaker 2: They had a big X ninety six dot com slash live.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Yeah, they had a big metal bigfoot stuck in the trees.
- 5:28Speaker 2: That could be dangerous.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, And there was there was there was lore saying,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you know, he lives out.
- 5:33Speaker 2: Here, maybe this is supposed to be something to lure
- 5:37Speaker 2: him in.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Yeah. But but you're gonna get more Minnesota sense of
- 5:41Speaker 1: humor in a minute. So so while so we decided
- 5:45Speaker 1: to gather around with the elders of the family and
- 5:47Speaker 1: hear stories about the Russell family. Okay, and uh, my
- 5:51Speaker 1: mother's cousin, Mary Teresa Bridget, who is not a nun
- 5:56Speaker 1: but somehow came upon a a nun's habit. If you
- 6:01Speaker 1: go to x ninety six dot com slash lives dressed
- 6:04Speaker 1: up like a nun. Okay, married Teresa Bridget.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Because this is a bunch of Catholics, Bill, because it
- 6:10Speaker 2: would be fun.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Yeah, And she decided to give a lesson in family
- 6:15Speaker 1: history dressed up as a nun.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Was it satirical?
- 6:19Speaker 1: Uh? Some parts?
- 6:21Speaker 2: I won't wear this in the sauna.
- 6:24Speaker 1: But as we are sitting there listening to Mary Teresa
- 6:27Speaker 1: Bridget tell stories of the family, and I didn't get
- 6:30Speaker 1: a picture of this they had somebody went and put
- 6:34Speaker 1: on a black gorilla suit.
- 6:38Speaker 2: What's wrong with these.
- 6:41Speaker 1: And was poking through the trees.
- 6:44Speaker 2: You could go very badly the guy. I know.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Because so the whole time they were on the lookout
- 6:53Speaker 1: for bigfoot, because you know they're bigfoot around these parts.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeap plural for big big sasquatch, several big feet. But
- 7:06Speaker 1: part of the stories we were telling, and I sort
- 7:09Speaker 1: of mentioned this before I left. So Hans whose farm
- 7:13Speaker 1: we were at, his grandfather was in World War Two
- 7:17Speaker 1: and he flew thunderbolt planes in Italy during World War two.
- 7:24Speaker 1: He was on a mission in Bologna. Back home was
- 7:29Speaker 1: his pregnant wife.
- 7:31Speaker 2: What a handsome young mat His name's.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Lauren, hints. His pregnant wife and one year old daughter
- 7:40Speaker 1: back home waiting for him to come home. And I
- 7:44Speaker 1: guess you could get leave after you had done so
- 7:46Speaker 1: many missions, which was like seventy five or something. And
- 7:50Speaker 1: so he was signing up for all the missions he
- 7:53Speaker 1: could sign up for so he could get home to
- 7:56Speaker 1: his pregnant wife and baby. And on this day that
- 8:00Speaker 1: he passed away, he had already flown a mission in
- 8:04Speaker 1: the morning, and he signed up for another mission that
- 8:07Speaker 1: day and was his original plane wasn't available, so he
- 8:10Speaker 1: took somebody else's plane to fly. This man he's just
- 8:13Speaker 1: trying to rack up as many missions as he could,
- 8:17Speaker 1: flying over this small town in Bologna where the Germans
- 8:21Speaker 1: were on the ground shooting up at the plane. German
- 8:25Speaker 1: shot through the plane, went through his back, and they're
- 8:29Speaker 1: assuming this is what happened because they found an oxygen
- 8:32Speaker 1: canister that had a bullet hole in it, and the
- 8:33Speaker 1: oxygen canisters were on their back. They think he was
- 8:37Speaker 1: shot in the air and then crashed into a field.
- 8:43Speaker 1: The crash like augured in like twelve feet into the
- 8:48Speaker 1: ground and it was.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Never recovered for the wreckage.
- 8:51Speaker 1: The wreckage was never recovered. This family was desperate to
- 8:56Speaker 1: find him and give him a proper burial. And just
- 8:58Speaker 1: a few years ago. This is a longer story than
- 9:01Speaker 1: I have time to tell you right now. Maybe we
- 9:02Speaker 1: can revisit it later about how they found him. But
- 9:05Speaker 1: it's fascinating they did find him. They did find him.
- 9:09Speaker 1: There's been a movie made about it called Finding Lauren.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Has it been released?
- 9:14Speaker 1: Uh? Huh, it's been released. And yeah, I don't have
- 9:19Speaker 1: time to tell you the whole story, just but so sad.
- 9:22Speaker 1: This happened two days before the end of the war,
- 9:27Speaker 1: just like that close that he could have been home
- 9:31Speaker 1: to his fans. The people of Finland say sna they
- 9:34Speaker 1: say sona. According to doctor Mike, and here's another Texter.
- 9:40Speaker 1: I hate everything about all of this. Who the hell
- 9:42Speaker 1: has a family reunion in October in the Midwest? Now
- 9:47Speaker 1: I need to tell you more stories about the reunion.
- 9:50Speaker 2: Was it was it held in October for a particular reason?
- 9:53Speaker 2: I know, I mean, didn't have anything to do with
- 9:56Speaker 2: the date of his death.
- 9:57Speaker 1: No, I think it was just I'm not sure why
- 10:00Speaker 1: that was. But I'm more to tell you about it.
- 10:02Speaker 1: So maybe we have some time a little bit later
- 10:04Speaker 1: to tell you about it.
