- 1:33Speaker 2: you guys, So let me give you a little background,
- 1:37Speaker 2: and I'm not gonna give much away because you need
- 1:41Speaker 2: to get the book. Okay. So girl gets heartbroken, girl
- 1:49Speaker 2: meets guy. Okay, girls interesting guy, Girl meets guy. Girl,
- 1:55Speaker 2: Guy go on date, girl, guy fall in love girl,
- 2:00Speaker 2: baby mama. Yeah, okay. There are some other subtopics going on,
- 2:10Speaker 2: as in, you have the best friends that are in
- 2:12Speaker 2: this situation and like I told you, baby moms and
- 2:16Speaker 2: past loves. But like I said, I'm not going to
- 2:19Speaker 2: give you much because I don't want you to not
- 2:24Speaker 2: go wrap this book. Okay, So without furthermore, I am
- 2:31Speaker 2: going to bring up the author author, the Kendrick L. Northern.
- 2:37Speaker 2: How are you tonight? Yeah, I am doing well. So
- 2:45Speaker 2: before we start off, you have to tell us a
- 2:46Speaker 2: little bit about yourself.
- 2:56Speaker 3: For the half years my freedom Alabama. You know, uh,
- 3:05Speaker 3: just make a job.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Okay, Okay, So we're just gonna dive right into the book.
- 3:13Speaker 2: You know. So let's let's talk about these characters. We
- 3:19Speaker 2: have talked about them before, but let's get a little
- 3:23Speaker 2: bit more deeper. Okay. So let's start off with I'm
- 3:28Speaker 2: just going to ask you a general question so we
- 3:30Speaker 2: can move right on into it. Which one of these
- 3:34Speaker 2: characters or is your favorite? And why is that character
- 3:38Speaker 2: your freider? And once we find out about this character,
- 3:41Speaker 2: we'll go a little bit more.
- 3:50Speaker 3: You know, he was wading up and get home.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, you.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Know that's how things happened.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Okay, Yes, So Kendrick Kendrick is to me, it seems
- 4:12Speaker 2: like he is you or the typical African American male.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Would you say that would be true?
- 4:22Speaker 3: Thinking out to him life? They can but they I
- 4:29Speaker 3: mean you could say that I made it where I
- 4:32Speaker 3: want to be the date the man I want to
- 4:34Speaker 3: turn to day. That's a giant transition the book. You
- 4:37Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, but I told the readers that
- 4:41Speaker 3: you know, well a time in your life wrote you
- 4:44Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. I just showed him to get
- 4:46Speaker 3: by this character.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Now, I have to admit you, guys, throughout the whole book,
- 4:52Speaker 2: even though the book, I want to say, if I
- 4:54Speaker 2: can't remember, I think if between maybe two hundred and
- 4:57Speaker 2: fifty to three hundred pages. But in this time span
- 5:01Speaker 2: of the book, you literally see the character development between
- 5:06Speaker 2: each one of the characters from their hurt, their frustration,
- 5:10Speaker 2: their pain to their triumph. And that's one thing I
- 5:13Speaker 2: do like when authors do that, and the reason being
- 5:16Speaker 2: is because I like cliffhangers. But once I really get
- 5:23Speaker 2: into your book, these characters like become friends, become individuals
- 5:27Speaker 2: that I see on an everyday basis, And of course
- 5:31Speaker 2: you're going to be rooting yeah, yeah, yeah for your
- 5:34Speaker 2: favorite character. And that's why in most books. Now, sometime
- 5:40Speaker 2: I can do a cliffhanger, but in most books, I
- 5:43Speaker 2: want to see that character in so many terms, get
- 5:47Speaker 2: what they deserve, good or bad. Okay, so let's talk
- 5:54Speaker 2: between the two ladies, between Eve and Mo, who was
- 5:59Speaker 2: your favorite character and why.
- 6:06Speaker 3: I play Eve with my favorite character be times. You know,
- 6:08Speaker 3: as I wrote a book like I say in Rights Caculus,
- 6:12Speaker 3: and you know that's a transition from a streets you
- 6:15Speaker 3: know what I'm saying, and learning what love is. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 3: you have a realization of what type of difficult woman
- 6:21Speaker 3: you would like to do understand the rest of your life.
- 6:23Speaker 3: So I have to get the character around here. If
- 6:25Speaker 3: I had also show the pains and the hard age,
- 6:28Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying, to get because you know,
- 6:29Speaker 3: every relationship is my person.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Great, So if you can give Eve a piece of advice,
- 6:37Speaker 2: what would that advice be for her?
- 6:44Speaker 3: I would like to see you know what I'm saying
- 6:45Speaker 3: that you know, although you always be dependent on someone
- 6:48Speaker 3: in the world, no matter what it may be, you know,
- 6:51Speaker 3: got to have some type of things for yourself ussel.
- 6:54Speaker 3: But at the same time you have to know how
- 6:56Speaker 3: to how to a line between the two and you
- 6:59Speaker 3: know how to learn out of love and the different
- 7:05Speaker 3: the status you know so much the one of time,
- 7:09Speaker 3: Like I say, because she was traveling in a life
- 7:13Speaker 3: where she's depended on the man.
- 7:15Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying right right, because she was
- 7:19Speaker 2: and that's one of the things that Eve has to
- 7:22Speaker 2: go through in the book, she has to, let's just say,
- 7:28Speaker 2: in so many words, reinvent herself because herself was in
- 7:34Speaker 2: her love. But then something happened to her love. And
- 7:37Speaker 2: I'm not going to tell y'all what happened, so y'all
- 7:39Speaker 2: got to read the book to forgure out what's happened.
- 7:41Speaker 2: But something happens to her love, which leaders her now
- 7:47Speaker 2: trying to reinvent herself into the woman that she becomes
- 7:51Speaker 2: in this book. You have a lot of subplots going
- 7:56Speaker 2: on in your book. In to be for this to
- 8:02Speaker 2: be your first release, not your first written book, but
- 8:05Speaker 2: your first release, you made all your subtopic topics or
- 8:15Speaker 2: sub situations intertwined with each other. How in the world
- 8:21Speaker 2: did you make that happen and keep everything straight?
- 8:28Speaker 3: I mean see reality, you know, and how the wild
- 8:31Speaker 3: roads of world roads to it interns, you know, different
- 8:34Speaker 3: day of a different day every time. It's different actions,
- 8:37Speaker 3: you know, so every time they lifestyles and things they
- 8:40Speaker 3: go through, you know, just like like kind of like
- 8:43Speaker 3: social media just being social period. Its just share, thank
- 8:48Speaker 3: you for coming, and you know, those things become reality.
- 8:53Speaker 3: It makes consail.
- 8:55Speaker 2: That is true. That is true. A lot of the
- 8:59Speaker 2: situations and this book to you guys, you can pinpoint
- 9:02Speaker 2: it to happen to somebody that you know. So I'm
- 9:05Speaker 2: gonna ask you, Okay, which one of these situations in
- 9:12Speaker 2: your book did you enjoy writing the most?
- 9:24Speaker 3: I think that I But.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You gotta choose one I know you had. Okay, you, guys,
- 9:37Speaker 2: I'll give you three. I'll give you my favorite three,
- 9:39Speaker 2: and then you tell me which one you want you like.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I love the situation between Eve and Mo and how
- 9:49Speaker 2: Mo gets Eve out of her shell to actually go
- 9:52Speaker 2: out to the club. She gives her this confidence, like,
- 9:57Speaker 2: come on, mama, you gotta get it together. You know,
- 10:00Speaker 2: we got to continue on with life. So that's one.
- 10:05Speaker 2: How about the situation where Carlos and Kendrick is talking
- 10:11Speaker 2: and Kendrick has given Carlos that, hey man, you got
- 10:15Speaker 2: to cut this out because life is short. Things are
- 10:18Speaker 2: going on and I don't want you anything to happen
- 10:21Speaker 2: to you when he's doing his little dealings or the ooh,
- 10:31Speaker 2: I don't want to talk about that one. I don't
- 10:33Speaker 2: want to talk about that one. The fourth of July
- 10:40Speaker 2: where everyone was together and it seemed like it was
- 10:46Speaker 2: just heaven on earth. What's one of those three situations
- 10:49Speaker 2: was your favorite to write about? And why?
- 10:57Speaker 3: Uh? I think they all again out I say, after.
- 11:05Speaker 4: God, oh, come on, What is the thing that would
- 11:11Speaker 4: say is that you know when they had went on
- 11:13Speaker 4: their first day, pride to that you know they had
- 11:16Speaker 4: that exchanged numbers, the like particular street dude, you know,
- 11:20Speaker 4: being out there for the bad.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He forgets the college because he had got an offigures thing.
- 11:25Speaker 3: So when they finded her stuff, so it was at
- 11:27Speaker 3: the point where he made him to seem like he
- 11:30Speaker 3: forgot his podty, he gets the dead pies or whatever.
- 11:33Speaker 3: So he takes the stigma in her head and that's
- 11:35Speaker 3: when it goes on to the black man out there
- 11:37Speaker 3: the street. But when I always head at dinner, you
- 11:40Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. I ain't gonna say the reason,
- 11:42Speaker 3: but it was the pride that she wasn't expected. That's whatever.
- 11:47Speaker 2: No see in that scene, he was nothing but being
- 11:49Speaker 2: a player. That was one of those smooth nineteen eighties
- 11:56Speaker 2: bully ocean type player moves. I can't and why I said, Billy, Okay,
- 12:08Speaker 2: you could call it romantic. A typical guy would say that,
- 12:12Speaker 2: but for a female, you guys, it was one of those.
- 12:16Speaker 2: It was smooth, and I know people's like Billy Oshan.
- 12:19Speaker 2: I love Billy Oshan. Okay, I've got a new found
- 12:23Speaker 2: love to his music again. But you know, Billy Ocean
- 12:26Speaker 2: had those.
- 12:28Speaker 3: We wasn't the Caribbean.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so you know Bill Yoshi used to wait those though.
- 12:38Speaker 2: He was always in a suit. If you look at
- 12:41Speaker 2: all the Billy Oshan he was always in a suit
- 12:43Speaker 2: or a soft collar Pulo shirt in a suit. So
- 12:46Speaker 2: that's what I was getting when that scene came along.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Which scene was the hardest to write?
- 13:02Speaker 3: You know, Matree the.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Right for me.
- 13:03Speaker 3: It was a transition at the end of the book
- 13:07Speaker 3: where where everything was coming together on the podcast came
- 13:11Speaker 3: through a head, you know, and it give them the
- 13:13Speaker 3: tragic guy. Like like I said, we didn't get too
- 13:15Speaker 3: much weight because you know, when he was some tragic
- 13:18Speaker 3: they happened, you know in the world was up to happen,
- 13:21Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. They pretty much bring you
- 13:24Speaker 3: know out o the time they had hangs out was
- 13:26Speaker 3: bringing family and friends together for some reason. So it
- 13:30Speaker 3: was kind of you know, trying to bring it together
- 13:32Speaker 3: and try to because it was the book guy at
- 13:33Speaker 3: the same time, so it was kind of hard, but
- 13:37Speaker 3: how I had managed to find a way, and they.
- 13:41Speaker 2: Okay, can I give them a little snippet, just a
- 13:44Speaker 2: little snippet of the last seventy five pages, just a
- 13:48Speaker 2: little I'm not gonna give away a lot, just a
- 13:50Speaker 2: little cannot please? Okay, he did, but just.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Know some secrets, some secrets and some the seat. Oh
- 14:01Speaker 3: he came to a head, you know, and uh, some
- 14:04Speaker 3: tragity happened, Uh, situation in the hospital. It's a situation
- 14:10Speaker 3: now dout there in the world you have. That's why
- 14:13Speaker 3: you take yourself and be more uh eventually inclined to
- 14:16Speaker 3: what you're doing. You know what I'm saying, protect it
- 14:18Speaker 3: because of things up there that you catch and uh,
- 14:22Speaker 3: you know, there's there's things that would uh suicide, there's things,
- 14:27Speaker 3: uh you know that a part of what you're going
- 14:31Speaker 3: through to make your college you want to urstic violence.
- 14:34Speaker 3: It's everything repped up in one but you can relate to.
- 14:40Speaker 2: And the crazy thing about it is, you guys, if
- 14:43Speaker 2: you're living here in Charleston, you everybody, if you're breathing,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you've heard about the tragedy situation that just happened in
- 14:54Speaker 2: the Charleston area. When it came down to domestic violence,
- 14:57Speaker 2: and that is one of the situations that happened in
- 15:00Speaker 2: this book. So I don't mean to put you on
- 15:03Speaker 2: the spot, but I'm gonna ask how important was it
- 15:06Speaker 2: to have that factor of domestic violence. How important was
- 15:13Speaker 2: that to be in the book? Do you feel that
- 15:17Speaker 2: it was something that could have been left out in
- 15:20Speaker 2: the book still be the same. Now I would like
- 15:23Speaker 2: you to answer that question and then be as the reader,
- 15:25Speaker 2: I'll come back and answer that question.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Well, I feel it was very important because a lot
- 15:33Speaker 3: of people, like I say, when I write, write, we
- 15:36Speaker 3: had to come up book like to write, but things
- 15:38Speaker 3: that actually happened in the world. I'm saying with people
- 15:41Speaker 3: that can relate, but I feel human, you know what
- 15:44Speaker 3: I'm saying. But a lot of times these are things
- 15:49Speaker 3: that need to get addressed, you know what I'm saying,
- 15:51Speaker 3: that people need to be aware of. You know, it's
- 15:53Speaker 3: important they're just moving out the hurt, you know what
- 15:56Speaker 3: I'm saying. That I find in shape at the same
- 16:00Speaker 3: time that needs to be loved listen to because they
- 16:05Speaker 3: go up to something that they just one it just happened,
- 16:10Speaker 3: you know.
- 16:13Speaker 2: So it's important to me and I think as the reader.
- 16:17Speaker 2: You putting that in the book, I feel that it
- 16:20Speaker 2: was very important. And the reason why I feel like
- 16:23Speaker 2: it was important is because it brought awareness to it.
- 16:26Speaker 2: A lot of people would sweep it under rug and
- 16:29Speaker 2: think about it when something else tragic happens, especially here
- 16:32Speaker 2: in the state of South Carolina where we have one
- 16:35Speaker 2: of the highest rates of domestic violence, and you bring
- 16:41Speaker 2: in it to light in the book. It gave that character.
- 16:48Speaker 2: And I don't want to say it like this, you guys,
- 16:50Speaker 2: I truly don't, but it gave that character such a
- 16:53Speaker 2: human sense that you really can look and go someplace,
- 17:00Speaker 2: or you can be at home and think about somebody
- 17:02Speaker 2: who's going through this, and it puts you in the
- 17:04Speaker 2: situation of how you can encourage that person, how you
- 17:08Speaker 2: can be there for that person, because when they're ready
- 17:11Speaker 2: to leave, you need to be all right, let's go,
- 17:13Speaker 2: let's do what we need to do. You know what
- 17:15Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 17:16Speaker 1: So, what.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Scene was the most romantic to you? Because you hit
- 17:28Speaker 2: a couple of nerves on some of these scenes? Some
- 17:33Speaker 2: of these scenes, Yeah, which one was the worst most
- 17:38Speaker 2: romantic one? You feel, guy?
- 17:49Speaker 3: She expected to house, you know what I'm saying. She
- 17:53Speaker 3: might the biggest houses already down. Uh that you know
- 17:59Speaker 3: he's got up front. He's at man. He wasn't like
- 18:03Speaker 3: being tact that he hadn't put it no otherwise he's
- 18:09Speaker 3: not had the day to have his cooking skills. You
- 18:12Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. It's making conser. You know what
- 18:16Speaker 3: I'm saying, just time to go out. People need to
- 18:20Speaker 3: tell you don't know how to do it going, you
- 18:25Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. He kept essential.
- 18:29Speaker 2: To them saying So as the author, you were saying,
- 18:34Speaker 2: Kendrick was showing off his culinary skills and how you
- 18:38Speaker 2: can have a good time in As the reader, Kendrick
- 18:44Speaker 2: was trying to you know what, ladies and gentlemen. Okay,
- 18:48Speaker 2: so he just had easy access. If he did everything
- 18:51Speaker 2: at home, he ain't got to worry about driving anywhere.
- 18:54Speaker 2: He was already at home. But that part was very sentimental.
- 18:58Speaker 2: He was very sweet in that part. When y'all read,
- 19:01Speaker 2: did y'all see Kendrick has something up on her sleeve
- 19:03Speaker 2: from the get though, So let's go to the secondary characters,
- 19:08Speaker 2: call those and mo these two worthy the train tracks
- 19:22Speaker 2: as I may call it. Sometimes the two characters you
- 19:25Speaker 2: want them to get together but one character got this
- 19:28Speaker 2: situation going on and the other character got this situation
- 19:32Speaker 2: going on. Why did you choose the path that you
- 19:35Speaker 2: gave them to.
- 19:41Speaker 3: The similar background, Like I said, like she was. She
- 19:46Speaker 3: was the one that always wanted to be loved. But
- 19:50Speaker 3: the way she was love that wait, you know what
- 19:52Speaker 3: I'm saying.
- 19:53Speaker 4: She was more.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Collected in the house anything. So she was wishing to
- 19:57Speaker 3: raise around or ms race round. You know that material
- 20:01Speaker 3: value is the main thing. So she used the way
- 20:03Speaker 3: to get through. She used a little too curious to
- 20:06Speaker 3: stuff on the street. It's a smoke. And that the
- 20:08Speaker 3: other hand, you had Condon do the same thing. He
- 20:11Speaker 3: was raised pretty much enough in struggles and I'm saying
- 20:14Speaker 3: that he had to get out to get it, hide
- 20:16Speaker 3: and get it. I'm saying somebody means he had, so
- 20:20Speaker 3: he took at the same time. They both wanted the love.
- 20:24Speaker 3: They both wanted to do benefit. You know, just the
- 20:27Speaker 3: way it came up to the water, to the water
- 20:29Speaker 3: streets and the turble walls, trying to be good. She's
- 20:32Speaker 3: a turble war. I wanta love that turble world. Hay
- 20:35Speaker 3: Man get high lives no material though I got died.
- 20:40Speaker 3: I whether you say got pridec groups and get you
- 20:41Speaker 3: out out and stuff that I'm saying the designer.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Thing, you know, and that is true because you can
- 20:52Speaker 2: tell Carlos had this this sweet sweet the player wanted
- 21:02Speaker 2: to be teamed. Let's put it like that, okay, And she,
- 21:07Speaker 2: the player asked, was getting tired. To me, it seems
- 21:10Speaker 2: like more was getting tired because she was wanting what
- 21:12Speaker 2: Eve and Kendrick had. So that's why I say, well,
- 21:16Speaker 2: she she was getting tired of the games that was
- 21:20Speaker 2: being played between her and the guy that she was with.
- 21:24Speaker 2: So when you have the player that wants to be
- 21:27Speaker 2: teamed and the player that is tired and they get together,
- 21:35Speaker 2: my question is will they work?
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah, it's very much a crash court. It's an experience
- 21:45Speaker 3: that she learned.
- 21:47Speaker 2: You know.
- 21:48Speaker 3: So a lot of people go through some plays and
- 21:50Speaker 3: that with a lot of people afraid to see about
- 21:53Speaker 3: love and relationship. They afraid they don't get the level
- 21:56Speaker 3: of pain that they'll go through, you know, and everybody
- 22:00Speaker 3: like ya Door was just like everybody don't have in person.
- 22:08Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying, A person love the love
- 22:10Speaker 3: that they come up and have to fight and they
- 22:12Speaker 3: come through and have understanding and come back together and realize.
- 22:16Speaker 3: But hey, we can't think the work have as a clood.
- 22:21Speaker 3: Everything is in person.
- 22:25Speaker 2: Well, in this book, they did have the moments of
- 22:27Speaker 2: honky dory. That's when they did the Fourth of July
- 22:30Speaker 2: and when the ladies just was out getting hair and
- 22:33Speaker 2: stuff done. But then each one of the characters had
- 22:37Speaker 2: their what I call them knockout dragouts. And there were
- 22:40Speaker 2: plenty of times in this book I did not see
- 22:44Speaker 2: the characters working through it. And when they did work
- 22:47Speaker 2: through it, you're at that, oh my god, they came
- 22:50Speaker 2: to an understanding moment. And it's not one of those
- 22:53Speaker 2: ones where and y'all know me, y'all know I love
- 22:58Speaker 2: me a good erotic book. But this book wasn't one
- 23:03Speaker 2: of these books where as they had sex and then
- 23:06Speaker 2: two three page laters, they're back to it. This book
- 23:09Speaker 2: is one of those books where they talked it out,
- 23:11Speaker 2: they thought it out and came to a conclusion. So
- 23:16Speaker 2: that is another reason why I did love the way
