- 3:09Speaker 3: Dragnet the documented drama of an actual crime. While the
- 3:13Speaker 3: next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 3:16Speaker 3: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 3:19Speaker 3: the law through an actual case. From official police fiolets
- 3:22Speaker 3: from beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Dragnet is
- 3:26Speaker 3: the story of your police force and action.
- 3:32Speaker 7: It was Monday, October twenty third. It was foggy in
- 3:34Speaker 7: Los Angeles. We were working a day watch out on
- 3:37Speaker 7: narcotics detail. My partner's Ben Ramero. The boss is Captain Kerney.
- 3:41Speaker 7: My name is Friday. Was seven sixteen am when we
- 3:44Speaker 7: got to Saint Christopher's Hospital the pharmacy. How you do yes,
- 3:54Speaker 7: police officers, sister you'd like to see Sister Mary Benedict.
- 3:57Speaker 7: I'm she mother's superior.
- 3:59Speaker 8: Senters down to so you say, do we're investigating in
- 4:01Speaker 8: narcotic robbery?
- 4:02Speaker 9: Yes, there have been quite a few policemen here in
- 4:04Speaker 9: the past hour. I believe it was the fingerprint men
- 4:06Speaker 9: who just left such a minute. I have their card. Yes,
- 4:14Speaker 9: they were from Layton Fingerprint.
- 4:16Speaker 8: Division, Stall and the boys from Layton Prince.
- 4:18Speaker 9: Yes, that's right, Sergeant Harlan Stall.
- 4:21Speaker 7: A sister were the investigating officers. A sign of the case.
- 4:23Speaker 7: This is Sergeant Romero. My name is Friday. Are you
- 4:26Speaker 7: a lieutenant, No, I'm a sergeant. I wonder if you
- 4:28Speaker 7: could start right from the beginning for us, Just tell
- 4:30Speaker 7: us what you know about the robbery.
- 4:32Speaker 9: Well after mass I went to breakfast, and then I
- 4:34Speaker 9: came downstairs here to the pharmacy to open.
- 4:36Speaker 8: Up and keep the pharmacy locked overnight.
- 4:39Speaker 9: Oh, yes, always, we always assigned an intern on night duty.
- 4:43Speaker 9: He has the key in case any medicines are needed
- 4:45Speaker 9: during the night. He's authorized to issue what may be
- 4:48Speaker 9: needed to find the doctor's request.
- 4:50Speaker 10: Who else has the key to the pharmacy? Sister?
- 4:52Speaker 9: Are they just three keys? Mother Superior keeps one at
- 4:55Speaker 9: her desk, and you have one for the intern on duty, and.
- 4:58Speaker 8: I have one?
- 4:59Speaker 10: All right? Do you want to go on?
- 5:01Speaker 9: When I got down here this morning, I started to
- 5:03Speaker 9: unlock the door and found it a jar. There no
- 5:06Speaker 9: lights on. I snapped on the wall switch that one.
- 5:11Speaker 9: That's when I saw young Jimmy Lyons.
- 5:13Speaker 8: That's the enduring.
- 5:14Speaker 9: Yes, he was unconscious on the floor. I see his
- 5:16Speaker 9: head had been cut. He was bleeding profusely.
- 5:19Speaker 10: What'd you do? Then?
- 5:20Speaker 9: I call Mother Superior and she came right down. Doctor
- 5:24Speaker 9: Spencer was summoned. He came in and started administering aid
- 5:27Speaker 9: to intern lines there on the floor.
- 5:29Speaker 8: Was that when you find out the narcotics were missing?
- 5:31Speaker 9: No, not just at that moment. Both Mother Superior and
- 5:35Speaker 9: myself were quite worried about young lions condition. It's really
- 5:39Speaker 9: Mother Superior who first noticed the narcotics safe had been
- 5:41Speaker 9: tampered with.
- 5:42Speaker 8: Your stories don't exactly job their assistant. How do you
- 5:45Speaker 8: mean Mother Superior gives you credit for first noticing a theft.
- 5:49Speaker 9: Oh, my no, she's very charitable. But she's the first
- 5:52Speaker 9: one who pointed to the safe. She's very observant.
- 5:54Speaker 10: I understand, Go ahead, please.
- 5:57Speaker 9: Upon checking the safe, we found that someone had taken
- 5:59Speaker 9: our entire store of narcotics everything.
- 6:02Speaker 10: Is that the safe over there?
- 6:04Speaker 9: Yes, that's the narcotic safe. Don't touch that, mister Friday, No, no, never.
- 6:12Speaker 9: Nothing is to be touched until the police have completed
- 6:14Speaker 9: their investigation.
- 6:15Speaker 10: Clues or were the police?
- 6:17Speaker 9: Sister, then do you have all the clues you need?
- 6:20Speaker 7: Well, I wouldn't know, but the men from Latent Fingerprints
- 6:22Speaker 7: have dusted everything here, so it's all right to touch
- 6:24Speaker 7: things now.
- 6:25Speaker 9: That was mister Harland's Stall's men.
- 6:27Speaker 8: Yes, that's right. Oh, I didn't know. We understand. You
- 6:30Speaker 8: have the inventory list, Yes.
- 6:32Speaker 9: I have it on my desk.
- 6:39Speaker 8: Here, thank you.
- 6:41Speaker 9: We keep a running inventory. So that's the exact amount
- 6:44Speaker 9: that's missing, Yes.
- 6:45Speaker 7: Ma'am, cocaine and morphine. No, bird's eye, you big hauler
- 6:50Speaker 7: looks like about ten thousand.
- 6:52Speaker 6: More.
- 6:53Speaker 8: Like to have a copy of this inventory system.
- 6:55Speaker 9: Would you take the carbon I like to keep the
- 6:57Speaker 9: originals for my month to five.
- 6:59Speaker 10: That'll be fine.
- 7:00Speaker 8: Side of this intern lines nobody saw whoever it was?
- 7:03Speaker 9: No, Mother Superior and I have interrogated everyone. They made
- 7:07Speaker 9: a thorough investigation on our own. I took notes. Yes,
- 7:11Speaker 9: that's the way Father Brown does it.
- 7:13Speaker 10: Father Brown.
- 7:14Speaker 8: Oh, yes, he's an expert Detective Brown. You wouldn't mean
- 7:18Speaker 8: Fad Brown. No, Father Brown, Father Brown. You people have
- 7:24Speaker 8: your own detectives now.
- 7:25Speaker 9: Oh my No, he's not a regular detective. He's more
- 7:29Speaker 9: like Mother Superior and myself.
- 7:30Speaker 10: Is that right?
- 7:31Speaker 9: Yes, he's in England. Saw some really difficult cases. He'll
- 7:36Speaker 9: I'll show you see you right here The Triple Cross.
- 7:45Speaker 9: Another exciting Father Brown mystery by G. K. Chesterton. Oh yes,
- 7:51Speaker 9: I've all but one of the Father Brown books. Mother
- 7:54Speaker 9: Superior has it. I get it after she finishes.
- 7:57Speaker 10: What's the condition of the intern.
- 8:00Speaker 9: He's resting comfortably. Doctor Spencer says, you'll be all right.
- 8:03Speaker 9: He had to take nine stitches any scalp.
- 8:06Speaker 10: We'd like to talk to him.
- 8:07Speaker 9: I'm sure that'll be all right. I don't have to
- 8:11Speaker 9: tell you. We all think this is a terrible thing.
- 8:14Speaker 10: Yes, sister, it is.
- 8:15Speaker 9: All those narcotics. Whoever took them all distribute them?
- 8:19Speaker 10: Will they Well, that's our guess, sister. The stuff will
- 8:21Speaker 10: be sold addicts.
- 8:23Speaker 9: What makes a dope adict? How do they get started?
- 8:26Speaker 9: Why do they do it?
- 8:27Speaker 8: I don't know, sister. I give you a lot of reasons.
- 8:29Speaker 9: None of them good, none of them good. And for
- 8:32Speaker 9: a few moments of what tonight they have it, and
- 8:34Speaker 9: tomorrow they have nothing.
- 8:36Speaker 10: That's about the size of it, sister.
- 8:38Speaker 9: Stars are setting and the caravan starts for the dawn
- 8:41Speaker 9: of nothing.
- 8:42Speaker 11: The Bible, no, oh, Mark I am.
- 8:58Speaker 7: Before we left Saint Christopher's Hospital, we talked with intern
- 9:01Speaker 7: James Lyons. Since he was slugged from behind, he failed
- 9:04Speaker 7: to see his assailant, he could tell us nothing. The
- 9:06Speaker 7: entire hospital staff was screened thoroughly. They could add nothing
- 9:09Speaker 7: to what we already knew. Between six and seven o'clock
- 9:12Speaker 7: that morning, ten thousand dollars worth of high grade prescription
- 9:15Speaker 7: narcotics had been stolen somewhere in the city of Los
- 9:18Speaker 7: Angeles was the answer. As in all narcotics cases, speed
- 9:21Speaker 7: is the prime factor. Whoever held those narcotics wouldn't waste
- 9:24Speaker 7: any time diluting or cutting it and making it ready
- 9:27Speaker 7: for quick sale.
- 9:28Speaker 10: Our job was to stop him.
- 9:30Speaker 8: Five minutes past eight am, we checked in.
- 9:32Speaker 7: With Sergeant Harlan's stall at Laking. Fingerprints detailed. Not much help,
- 9:36Speaker 7: is it? That's all you got?
- 9:37Speaker 8: Huh?
- 9:38Speaker 12: The safest clean not a print on it, no prints
- 9:40Speaker 12: anywhere in the room. Slugg the intern from behind, took
- 9:43Speaker 12: his keys, tore a belt, boop off his trousers, opened
- 9:46Speaker 12: the safe and Walt Stock couldn't have been cleaner.
- 9:49Speaker 13: Yeah, you didn't get anything on your end though.
- 9:51Speaker 10: Nothing.
- 9:53Speaker 4: Getle them, Okay, I picked one up. Oh isen junker
- 9:57Speaker 4: by the name of Beb Kellogg is really staying seeing Steve,
- 10:00Speaker 4: but he's coming out of him. Let's go talk to him.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Check your letters, doll.
- 10:03Speaker 10: Yeah, what's the story on?
- 10:09Speaker 4: Wallace and Hunt picked him up downtown LA was sitting
- 10:12Speaker 4: in the park car at Fourth and Broadway. I thought
- 10:14Speaker 4: at first he was a three ninety, but they couldn't
- 10:16Speaker 4: raise him. He's down this way.
- 10:18Speaker 10: What else?
- 10:19Speaker 4: Well, Wallace figured he must be geed up, so they
- 10:20Speaker 4: roll up his sleeve to look for the spike marks.
- 10:22Speaker 8: They found him, find anything on him?
- 10:24Speaker 4: Yeah, there were two vials of them on the seat
- 10:26Speaker 4: behind him, the side him. Description stuff. Got that list
- 10:29Speaker 4: of serial numbers from the hospital.
- 10:31Speaker 10: Yeah right here, All right, let's go in Wallace.
- 10:39Speaker 4: Yeah, Kevin Friday's get lost of the serial numbers on
- 10:41Speaker 4: that hospital highs hopped on. Check him against the vials
- 10:44Speaker 4: he found in his car. Here, thanks, Joe, I feel him, babe.
- 10:56Speaker 10: All right?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Hell Augus is Friday and Romero Central Vision. I assume
- 11:02Speaker 4: you want to tell us about it. Nothing to tell
- 11:05Speaker 4: living High, aren't you. I'm not unusual, It's not the way.
- 11:08Speaker 10: I get it. You're scoring good prescription.
- 11:10Speaker 13: Stuff, birthday press? It from a friend?
- 11:13Speaker 10: Who is it?
- 11:14Speaker 8: I want to keep his friendship?
- 11:16Speaker 4: Who's your connection?
- 11:16Speaker 10: Baby?
- 11:18Speaker 4: I don't know you know that morphine we picked out
- 11:20Speaker 4: of your cars? Hot?
- 11:21Speaker 10: Is it?
- 11:21Speaker 8: In all of it?
- 11:22Speaker 7: The hospital pharmacy was knocked over this morning. The numbers
- 11:26Speaker 7: on those vials of yours match up.
- 11:27Speaker 13: You're in a real jam no numbers on them.
- 11:30Speaker 10: You might as well tell us where you got it.
- 11:32Speaker 8: I'm not going to be a pagan for you.
- 11:34Speaker 7: Nobody's asking me to be a fagan killog. That's hyph
- 11:36Speaker 7: hard stuff. We don't get anybody else. It can go
- 11:38Speaker 7: hard for you.
- 11:39Speaker 13: I'm not going to bite the hand if heeds me.
- 11:41Speaker 4: You want to stand it alone on this one, not
- 11:43Speaker 4: the idea.
- 11:44Speaker 8: I didn't say that.
- 11:45Speaker 4: Well, one of us isn't going to go along and
- 11:46Speaker 4: hold your hand. How about it? Who's your connection?
- 11:50Speaker 10: All right? It isn't going to be a long weight killogg.
- 11:52Speaker 7: As soon as Waters gets back with those cereal numbers,
- 11:54Speaker 7: you can play hero all afternoon.
- 11:55Speaker 4: It will be on the twelfth floor of the kind
- 11:57Speaker 4: of jail bab You won't have to wait long later either.
- 12:00Speaker 4: And why don't you put one foot that cartro and

- 12:04Speaker 8: Two bottles of drug store stuff, robrick Y'll ten thousand dollars.
- 12:09Speaker 13: This is good, but two bottles ain't worth that much, and.
- 12:11Speaker 8: You only show a part of it. Maybe you got
- 12:13Speaker 8: the rest of it at your plant. You got my
- 12:15Speaker 8: plant nineteen thirty one, Essex.

- 12:25Speaker 8: You feel pretty good now, but you'll get a yin on.
- 12:27Speaker 8: You won't help me. You never do. When's the last
- 12:30Speaker 8: time you've helped us? Remember it is worse than mine.
- 12:34Speaker 8: I helped you.
- 12:34Speaker 13: I helped you guys a lot. Don't you remember the
- 12:37Speaker 13: Frank Smith plant No. Nineteen thirty three, Friday Night Last.
- 12:42Speaker 13: I'll let you write tough Smeddy's plan. Smithy didn't have
- 12:45Speaker 13: no giza like your fun on me. He was a
- 12:48Speaker 13: big man. We turned up four kites on him for USh.

- 13:36Speaker 14: Oh yeah, you're told me I'm wanna step outside of that. Yeah,
- 13:40Speaker 14: stay with him away. That's it checks out.
- 13:46Speaker 10: Huh.
- 13:47Speaker 15: Somebody cut through the serial number stamps on the vials,
- 13:49Speaker 15: but you can still make them out.
- 13:51Speaker 4: The two vials of morephemie found in Kellogg's car were
- 13:54Speaker 4: from the hospital pharmasy. Thanks mommas, are all right baby?
- 14:05Speaker 4: Now let's cut out the jokes. So those two vials
- 14:07Speaker 4: you had came from the hospital and numbers check out.

- 14:15Speaker 8: them all right, Let's see how you could read them.
- 14:18Speaker 13: I couldn't.
- 14:18Speaker 8: Why not?
- 14:19Speaker 13: Somebody scratched them all? Oh babe, you wouldn't know. Try
- 14:26Speaker 13: how much he do I have to stand if I
- 14:28Speaker 13: take it along?
- 14:28Speaker 4: Plenty? There was an intern slug on that job. Hurt
- 14:31Speaker 4: pretty bad. They're going to tag you for assault too.
- 14:33Speaker 8: I never hurt anybody in my life.
- 14:34Speaker 10: How do we know?
- 14:36Speaker 8: I just told you we don't know you didn't pull
- 14:38Speaker 8: this job. We haven't got any proof. Once more, what's
- 14:42Speaker 8: the con.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Goes like this? Babe? First degree robbery five years to life,
- 14:46Speaker 4: Assault with the deadly weapon one to ten, Violation of
- 14:49Speaker 4: the State Narcotics Act one to fifteen. You can add

- 14:57Speaker 8: I can't go that route. Where'd you get the stuff?
- 15:00Speaker 13: I'd rather be a Fagan than spend fifty years of

- 17:59Speaker 6: It's wise to smoke extra mild Fatima.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Best of all long cigarettes.
- 18:11Speaker 7: Ten thirty am, Central Casting gave us Leonard Castle's home
- 18:14Speaker 7: address and detectives.
- 18:15Speaker 10: Long and Hunt went on immediate stakeout.

- 18:53Speaker 7: around a movie, I say, but I'm walking.
- 18:57Speaker 10: Sure a thick fog, isn't it.
- 18:59Speaker 8: We don't have up. But when we get him, they're

- 19:53Speaker 7: there's someplace where we can talk.

- 19:58Speaker 10: All right. You know a fellow the name of Babe Kellogg.

- 21:37Speaker 8: What's it all about?
- 21:38Speaker 7: Between six and seven o'clock this morning, somebody robbed the
- 21:40Speaker 7: pharmacy at Saint Christopher's Hospital and slugged the intern, made
- 21:43Speaker 7: off with over ten thousand dollars with a narcotics.
- 21:45Speaker 8: Yeah, we find you were in bed between six and seven?
- 21:47Speaker 8: Are clear?
- 21:48Speaker 10: I was anybody to back up that alibi?
- 21:50Speaker 4: A lot of that.
- 21:51Speaker 10: I guess you'd know what time she generally get up.
- 21:53Speaker 8: Well, I don't know why she couldn't very well back
- 21:56Speaker 8: yet she was still asleep. She's usually up early.
- 21:58Speaker 7: So she said you didn't know what time she got in? Well,
- 22:00Speaker 7: I mean I don't usually know, but you know this morning. No,
- 22:03Speaker 7: you don't know, baby Kellogg.
- 22:05Speaker 17: Simmer down, everybody, let's have it. Flat them off. What
- 22:10Speaker 17: are you reading at junior Harry nine?

- 22:14Speaker 17: Hotter, A little hotter, that's it? Whoa ten plus?
- 22:20Speaker 6: Steve? That's it?
- 22:21Speaker 17: How about it?
- 22:21Speaker 6: Steve?
- 22:22Speaker 10: Anykay?
- 22:22Speaker 4: Turn him over?
- 22:24Speaker 17: Rolling action?
- 22:29Speaker 10: All right, you says, they get all the clues up
- 22:32Speaker 10: your right in.
- 22:35Speaker 17: That's what I found.
- 22:37Speaker 10: Here's a broken window.
- 22:38Speaker 17: That's right, it's plastic with prince.
- 22:41Speaker 18: Yeah, we got on it, Jake, you said, plastered with prints,
- 22:47Speaker 18: the line rings, plastered with fingerprints.
- 22:49Speaker 17: You gotta say the whole word.
- 22:50Speaker 4: They'll never know what you mean.
- 22:51Speaker 8: In Vancouver.
- 22:52Speaker 17: Come yeah, yeah, hold the work, keep it quiet.
- 22:56Speaker 15: That's really easy. Tough director, but he's a good one.
- 22:58Speaker 15: How long you've been doing this kind of word cancer?
- 23:00Speaker 4: Oh?
- 23:00Speaker 8: Six seven years?
- 23:01Speaker 10: What pictures you've been in?
- 23:02Speaker 4: Oh?
- 23:02Speaker 15: I don't think you'd have noticed. They're mostly small parties.
- 23:04Speaker 15: What kind of punts you got in this picture?
- 23:06Speaker 8: I play a cop?
- 23:07Speaker 10: What would you like to do in this picture? No?
- 23:10Speaker 10: What's your ambition? You're gonna stand in pictures?
- 23:11Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 23:12Speaker 15: I'd like to like to get a few bigger parts
- 23:14Speaker 15: if I could. It's pretty tough to try and set
- 23:16Speaker 15: yourself to produce her. If you can't see you on
- 23:17Speaker 15: the film.
- 23:18Speaker 8: Money is pretty good, No, isn't it?
- 23:20Speaker 10: All?
- 23:20Speaker 8: All the Pens's a different deal in each picture. You
- 23:22Speaker 8: do you have an agent?
- 23:24Speaker 10: No?
- 23:24Speaker 8: I did have wasn't doing anything for me, so I
- 23:26Speaker 8: let him go on. I represented that pretty hard to
- 23:29Speaker 8: build any kind of a name without an agent, isn't it?
- 23:30Speaker 8: What all the pens? If you can keep up a
- 23:32Speaker 8: good front, nice car, that's all the constant time?
- 23:35Speaker 10: Do you really believe that? Do you touch you?
- 23:37Speaker 19: Well?
- 23:37Speaker 10: I don't know much about it. I'm not an actor.
- 23:39Speaker 8: You said you didn't know baby killing at all, didn't you?
- 23:41Speaker 8: I don't know. You said you saw your LANDI at
- 23:43Speaker 8: six flock this morning. No, I didn't see that. There's
- 23:46Speaker 8: the Theodre or Milton director.
- 23:47Speaker 10: Would you like to meet it? What time you see
- 23:48Speaker 10: your landy?
- 23:49Speaker 8: This parish Meltourne, Yeah, Castle. When are you gonna get
- 23:51Speaker 8: to meet really? Yeah? No, I was still in the

- 23:56Speaker 4: you pretty kay?
- 23:57Speaker 8: What time did they break for lunch?
- 23:58Speaker 4: Cattle?

- 24:04Speaker 7: directors that he didn't need to Why you never want
- 24:06Speaker 7: to believe the director? So I was a first assistant.
- 24:08Speaker 8: We could check with him, couldn't. Well, I don't like
- 24:09Speaker 8: to do that. I hate ask any favorites.
- 24:11Speaker 15: Said he wasn't going to use you laugh for Lene, Well,
- 24:13Speaker 15: it isn't a good policy to bother the first assistant.
- 24:16Speaker 7: It was probably better in here anyway. I didn't see
- 24:19Speaker 7: any place sit on outside unless you have a car
- 24:21Speaker 7: in the You have car?
- 24:23Speaker 8: No, I don't.
- 24:24Speaker 10: But you told us she had a car. No, I
- 24:27Speaker 10: didn't tell you that when you said something about keeping
- 24:30Speaker 10: up a good front, nice car?
- 24:31Speaker 8: Is that what you say? Oh? Oh sure, I have
- 24:35Speaker 8: a cry. I don't know what I was thinking about. Yeah,
- 24:36Speaker 8: I have a car.
- 24:37Speaker 15: I thought you said you had a car. Tell you
- 24:40Speaker 15: this picture. I will drive you crazy. I don't know
- 24:42Speaker 15: what I'm saying.
- 24:42Speaker 7: After's that maybe you made a mistake about Babe Kellog
- 24:45Speaker 7: do you know? No, I'm sure about that.
- 24:47Speaker 8: I don't know any Babe Carson Kellogg or Kellogg you know,
- 24:50Speaker 8: I don't know it.
- 24:51Speaker 10: Would you mind showing us your wallet?
- 24:52Speaker 8: What for? You want to see my identification? We see
- 24:54Speaker 8: the wallet?
- 24:55Speaker 13: Then all right?
- 24:58Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 24:58Speaker 10: No, you hold it joking it up?
- 25:01Speaker 4: Quiet place, all right?
- 25:03Speaker 8: Say okay?
- 25:06Speaker 4: Right, see all right, nice and easy now finger prints
- 25:13Speaker 4: Jake by action.
- 25:16Speaker 8: Alt you so as they get all the clues up
- 25:19Speaker 8: your right in.
- 25:22Speaker 14: What I call it?
- 25:23Speaker 10: He's a broken.
- 25:24Speaker 8: Window, that's right, it's a flat fanker prints.
- 25:27Speaker 10: Yeah, we got im in.
- 25:32Speaker 7: I thought you see how much money you got in
- 25:35Speaker 7: your wallet?
- 25:35Speaker 15: Canceled? No, you vote it just counted? Course, Oh there
- 25:41Speaker 15: it is? What about the rest of it in there?
- 25:44Speaker 4: All right?
- 25:45Speaker 10: I didn't see all right, count it just a few
- 25:48Speaker 10: hunder here counted?
- 25:49Speaker 8: All right? So well I can see four fifties right
- 25:54Speaker 8: there on top. That's two hundred, isn't it?
- 25:56Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 25:57Speaker 8: Three hundred.
- 26:00Speaker 10: Four fifty. Yeah, go on.
- 26:04Speaker 8: I hadn't know I had this much. That's two hundred
- 26:07Speaker 8: and fifty more, and that makes seven hundred. Didn't this morning?
- 26:10Speaker 8: I thought I had.
- 26:11Speaker 7: There's two more tens in the five there. That's seven
- 26:13Speaker 7: hundred and twenty five dollars. Castle, Yeah, doing pretty well
- 26:16Speaker 7: in this picture. It's not all picture money, all right.
- 26:18Speaker 7: You can put your wallet away.
- 26:20Speaker 8: Thanks. You didn't make this money on the picture. Where'd
- 26:23Speaker 8: you get it? Play little cards?
- 26:24Speaker 10: This night?
- 26:24Speaker 8: Were they pretty late? Yeah?
- 26:25Speaker 10: Pretty late?
- 26:26Speaker 8: Weren't you tired this morning?
- 26:27Speaker 9: No?
- 26:27Speaker 8: Not even when you got up at six?
- 26:29Speaker 10: I said, I got up at six I list in castle.
- 26:31Speaker 7: You don't know what you said, but one thing sure
- 26:33Speaker 7: you're lying to was you know, Babe Kellogg and your
- 26:34Speaker 7: own well enough to sell him two miles a high
- 26:36Speaker 7: grade morphine.
- 26:37Speaker 8: How you're wrong about it? All right?
- 26:38Speaker 10: Then you set us straight.
- 26:39Speaker 7: Kellogg says he paid your seven hundred dollars for the
- 26:40Speaker 7: stuff you got over seven hundred and your wallet that's morn
- 26:42Speaker 7: you need for lunch money.
- 26:43Speaker 8: Now this could be a coincidence. You set a straight
- 26:44Speaker 8: where you're wrong.
- 26:45Speaker 10: What'd you get the money?
- 26:47Speaker 8: Turn it.
- 26:49Speaker 17: Right? See action all right?
- 26:54Speaker 2: You says, I get all the clues.
- 26:56Speaker 10: I'll be right in. He's a broken window.
- 27:03Speaker 17: That's right, that's a plastic.
- 27:06Speaker 10: Yeah, we got a man all right, But you get
- 27:10Speaker 10: the money casting I told you I played card. Say
- 27:12Speaker 10: won't do got the keys to your car?
- 27:14Speaker 8: I can't leave.
- 27:14Speaker 10: We'll get you excuse we want to look at your car?
- 27:16Speaker 8: No, no, don't do that.
- 27:17Speaker 10: All right? Then? Do you know, Babe Kellogg?
- 27:18Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 27:25Speaker 19: See action alright? You says, I get all the clues
- 27:29Speaker 19: up your right end. He's a broken window. Huh, that's right,
- 27:37Speaker 19: that's alastic.
- 27:39Speaker 10: Yeah, we got a man cut.
- 27:43Speaker 17: Right all.
- 27:45Speaker 10: Do you know, babe Kellogg?
- 27:46Speaker 8: Yes, yes, I know, I might know it.
- 27:49Speaker 10: You robbed that hospital. It's money.
- 27:51Speaker 8: I needed it. I needed the money. I had to
- 27:54Speaker 8: have it. I owed money. They were gonna take my car.
- 27:55Speaker 4: I was broke.
- 27:57Speaker 15: What else could I do? I was sick once I
- 28:01Speaker 15: stayed at Saint Christophers. I know where they kept the drugs.
- 28:03Speaker 15: I know if I could get him, I could make
- 28:04Speaker 15: some fast money. I didn't mean to hit the kittick.
- 28:07Speaker 15: I couldn't let him see me.
- 28:08Speaker 20: He didn't have to be there, did he. He didn't
- 28:11Speaker 20: have to beat her. I sold oldaid. The stuff and
- 28:16Speaker 20: the rest is in the car and the cedar. I
- 28:20Speaker 20: need the money of it.
- 28:23Speaker 10: I was broke, broke, better get him out of her.
- 28:26Speaker 18: Ben, Come on, Casle, that was a great meeting. My
- 28:30Speaker 18: name is Melton Man, directing this picture. You the boys agent, No, sir,
- 28:33Speaker 18: never heard him read better. Funny thing though, Yeah, in
- 28:37Speaker 18: front of the camera he goes to the dogs.
- 28:46Speaker 2: The story you've just heard was true, only the names
- 28:50Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 28:52Speaker 3: On January twenty eighth, trial was held in Superior Court
- 28:55Speaker 3: Department ninety one, City in County of Los Angeles State
- 28:58Speaker 3: of California in a moment the results of trial.
- 29:00Speaker 7: And now here is our star, Jack Webb, thank you
- 29:04Speaker 7: the working detective. In reaching the solution of a crime
- 29:07Speaker 7: depends on the combined efforts of many minds, in many hands,
- 29:11Speaker 7: the crime lab, state and federal peace officers, and you
- 29:14Speaker 7: the citizens. And so with Fatima, the combined efforts of
- 29:18Speaker 7: many go into their blending and manufacture. Skilled hands working
- 29:22Speaker 7: with the finest Turkish and domestic tobaccos make Fatima extra Mile,
- 29:26Speaker 7: best of all long cigarettes. If you're a long cigarette
- 29:30Speaker 7: smoker like i am, try Fatima. Every pack is extra Mile.
- 29:35Speaker 7: Smoke Fatima, ladies and gentlemen. Starting Thursday, August twenty fourth,
- 29:41Speaker 7: that's two weeks from tonight, drag Net will be heard
- 29:44Speaker 7: one hour earlier at nine pm Eastern daylight saving time.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Leonard Francis Castle was tried and convicted of first degree
- 30:02Speaker 3: robbery and violating the State Narcotics Act. He received sentences
- 30:05Speaker 3: as prescribed by law. Alfred Babe Kellogg was convicted of
- 30:09Speaker 3: violating the State Narcotics Act. Both men are now serving
- 30:12Speaker 3: their terms in the state penitentiary. You have just heard Dragnet,
- 30:20Speaker 3: a series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice
- 30:23Speaker 3: comes from the Office of Chief of Police W. H. Parker,
- 30:26Speaker 3: Los Angeles Police Department.
- 30:29Speaker 5: Fatima Cigarettes, the best of all long cigarettes, has brought
- 30:32Speaker 5: you drag Net from Los Angeles. Sarah Berner is delightful
- 30:39Speaker 5: in Sarah's Private Caper. Next on NBC, this.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Is Andrew J. Graham, author There was Surface series, Oh
- 31:01Speaker 3: and a Man of His Wife.
- 31:02Speaker 2: You're listening to the great Detectives of Old time Radio.
- 31:12Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 31:13Speaker 4: Well.
- 31:13Speaker 1: In this episode we heard one of the most inaccurate
- 31:18Speaker 1: things you'll hear in a drag Net episode. Of course
- 31:21Speaker 1: it's a minor point, but since it revolved around the
- 31:25Speaker 1: world of mysteries and detectives, I've got to call it out.
- 31:29Speaker 1: And that is the reference to Father Brown. Clearly they
- 31:32Speaker 1: thought it would be kind of cute to put in
- 31:35Speaker 1: a father Brown reference since this was happening at a
- 31:39Speaker 1: Catholic hospital. But two things. One, Father Brown was never
- 31:44Speaker 1: known for carrying around a notebook. If he was known
- 31:47Speaker 1: for carrying around anything, it was an umbrella. He was
- 31:50Speaker 1: an amateur sleuth and his solutions were based on his
- 31:55Speaker 1: observations as well as his life experiences. With Store is
- 32:00Speaker 1: like the eye of a Paulo and the Blue Cross.
- 32:03Speaker 1: There also was never a story of Father Brown's called
- 32:07Speaker 1: the Triple Cross, and it seems to imply that this
- 32:10Speaker 1: was a novel. Father Brown's stories were all short stories.
- 32:14Speaker 1: It seems like the writers wanted to include the reference,
- 32:18Speaker 1: but they hadn't read the books, and they'd heard of
- 32:21Speaker 1: the character, but they couldn't be bothered to look at
- 32:24Speaker 1: the actual titles of the book. On a much more
- 32:27Speaker 1: positive note, I think the scene with the Babe character
- 32:33Speaker 1: was very fascinating and it was one of those points
- 32:37Speaker 1: where Dragnet is able to really use a sort of
- 32:41Speaker 1: show don't tell approach to crime prevention, and in preaching
- 32:46Speaker 1: the dangers of crime, it doesn't just say kids don't
- 32:50Speaker 1: do drugs, drugs are bad for you. Rather, we mate
- 32:55Speaker 1: this man who doesn't even know what city he's in.
- 32:59Speaker 1: That's how much damage all the drugs have really wrought
- 33:04Speaker 1: upon him, and that itself is a very powerful message
- 33:09Speaker 1: without actually saying any message. The final scene was very
- 33:16Speaker 1: intriguing and almost surreal because in the foreground we have
- 33:23Speaker 1: actors playing policemen who are closing a case, and behind
- 33:28Speaker 1: them are actors playing actors who are policemen. Closing a case.
- 33:35Speaker 1: I did think that that scene probably did go on
- 33:38Speaker 1: a little bit too long, and it was one case
- 33:42Speaker 1: where I think anytime you have good music or good
- 33:47Speaker 1: sound effect, anything that is a feature of your story,
- 33:52Speaker 1: you have to be sure that it serves the main story.
- 33:56Speaker 1: In this particular episode, it felt like the story was
- 34:01Speaker 1: serving up the sound effects in this fictional scene with
- 34:05Speaker 1: the policeman rather than the other way around, because we
- 34:08Speaker 1: already know who the robber was at the commercial break,
- 34:14Speaker 1: and we came back basically to have this scene on
- 34:18Speaker 1: the sound stage. So a bit of a mixed bag
- 34:20Speaker 1: on this. Still, I do think the part with Babe
- 34:24Speaker 1: was very well done, and I thought the scene on
- 34:28Speaker 1: the sound stage was good but been a bit shorter.
- 34:32Speaker 1: All right, Well, that will about do it for our
- 34:35Speaker 1: main comments. Our listener support campaign starts tomorrow. But because
- 34:41Speaker 1: of today's episode and its references to Father Brown, you
- 34:47Speaker 1: might be curious what the Father Brown stories are actually like. Well,
- 34:51Speaker 1: one part of our listener support campaign that starts tomorrow
- 34:55Speaker 1: is that, in addition to access to our premium sign
- 34:58Speaker 1: at your request, we'll send your choice of several ebooks,
- 35:02Speaker 1: as well as an additional thank you gift among the
- 35:05Speaker 1: items we will be offering. For a donation of twenty
- 35:09Speaker 1: dollars or more, we'll send you Colonial Radio Theaters the
- 35:12Speaker 1: Innocence of Father Brown, either volume one or Volume two,
- 35:16Speaker 1: and at the fifty dollars or more level, we'll send
- 35:19Speaker 1: you one of the two BBC Radio four adaptations of
- 35:24Speaker 1: Father Brown, starring Andrew Sachs. And those options are also

- 35:42Speaker 1: before the campaign officially starts, if your request is Father Brown,
- 35:46Speaker 1: we'll gladly send that along because Father Brown stories are wonderful,
- 35:52Speaker 1: But that we'll do it for today. Tomorrow we kick
