- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.

- 0:26Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:30Service, and Love.
- 0:32As we think about calling, often we're asking
- 0:35the question, what is God calling me to
- 0:37do?
- 0:38That's a good question.
- 0:39I've pushed back against it a little bit
- 0:41by suggesting it's not the only question we
- 0:44can ask to clarify the call of God
- 0:46on our lives.
- 0:47So a couple episodes ago, I asked the
- 0:49question, who is God calling me to become?
- 0:52That sense of who we are as people,
- 0:54our character, our process of becoming more like
- 0:56Jesus by God's grace over time is even
- 0:59more foundational and more important than the specific
- 1:02projects or tasks that God might call us
- 1:04to.
- 1:04Well, in this episode, I want to throw
- 1:06another question in the hopper, and that's this,
- 1:08where is God calling me to go?
- 1:11Have you ever had that sense of being
- 1:13called to a specific geographic place, to a
- 1:16specific community?
- 1:17Even if you haven't had that specific call,
- 1:20it's something that when we turn to scripture,
- 1:21we see all over the place.
- 1:23God loves to call people from one place
- 1:25to go to another place.
- 1:27This is something he's in the habit of
- 1:29doing.
- 1:29Just think about how his whole covenant relationship
- 1:31with Israel got kicked off.
- 1:33This is Genesis chapter 12.
- 1:35Who did God call Abraham and Sarah?
- 1:37What did he call them to do to
- 1:38change places?
- 1:39Let me read here.
- 1:40Verse one, the Lord had said to Abram,
- 1:42go from your country, your people, and your
- 1:44father's household to the land I will show
- 1:47you.
- 1:47And that movement from Ur, the land of
- 1:51Ur, where Abram grew up, to what we
- 1:53now call the promised land, that was incredibly
- 1:57important to the purposes of God, that change
- 1:59of location.
- 2:00One thing that you might not have thought
- 2:01about is that it really wasn't a change
- 2:03of vocation in the sense of what Abram
- 2:07was doing.
- 2:07What was he doing in Ur?
- 2:09He was doing the kind of nomadic herdsman,
- 2:11ancient Near Eastern life.
- 2:12What did he do in the promised land?
- 2:13He did the ancient Near Eastern nomadic herdsman
- 2:16life.
- 2:16He did the same thing in both places.
- 2:19God blessed him.
- 2:20He did it more abundantly in the promised
- 2:21land.
- 2:22But it really wasn't a change of what,
- 2:24it was a change of where.
- 2:26And yet that change of where was the
- 2:27catalyst for God saving action for the whole
- 2:30world.
- 2:31So when you're at a juncture and you're
- 2:34thinking about what's next in your career, it
- 2:36might even be that the where matters more
- 2:39than the what.
- 2:40The what might stay the same even, but
- 2:42the where changing is important to the purposes
- 2:44of God.
- 2:45This is a pattern that we see continuing
- 2:46throughout the scripture.
- 2:47So again, the Israelites, they end up leaving
- 2:50the promised land and going to Egypt in
- 2:53the generation of Jacob and Joseph.
- 2:55Then they have to go back to the
- 2:56promised land under Moses' leadership.
- 2:58Then they're eventually exiled.
- 3:00We're going to come back to that exile
- 3:01chapter.
- 3:02But then in the New Testament, God starts
- 3:04sending people all over the place.
- 3:06So let's go to one example of this.
- 3:08Acts chapter 13.
- 3:09This is in the early Christian community at
- 3:11Antioch, starting in verse 2.
- 3:13While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting,
- 3:15the Holy Spirit said, Set apart for me
- 3:17Barnabas and Saul, for the work to which
- 3:19I have called them.
- 3:20So after they had fasted and prayed, they
- 3:22placed their hands on them and sent them
- 3:24off.
- 3:26Okay, here we see that God is giving
- 3:28both a new what and a new where,
- 3:30or several new where's to Paul and Barnabas,
- 3:34right?
- 3:34So it's a new what.
- 3:35They had been at Antioch kind of teaching,
- 3:37being elders in the church.
- 3:38Now they're going to be missionaries traveling throughout
- 3:40the ancient Mediterranean world in order to proclaim
- 3:43the good news of Jesus to people who
- 3:45have not yet heard it.
- 3:46And yet also because they're going throughout the
- 3:48Mediterranean world, it's a new where.
- 3:49It's several new where's.
- 3:50They go to different cities and start churches
- 3:52all over the place, all around the Mediterranean
- 3:54Sea.
- 3:54And again, this was part of the movement
- 3:56of God to launch the church, the community
- 3:59of Jesus Christ, including both Jews and Gentiles
- 4:02in a way that's borne fruit for centuries
- 4:04and generations afterwards.
- 4:06So this sensitivity that this community at Antioch
- 4:09had to realize, oh, God's calling Barnabas and
- 4:13he's calling Paul to go somewhere different.
- 4:15That was incredibly important for God's purposes.
- 4:18So this is something that we don't want
- 4:19to miss.
- 4:19We don't want to miss when God is
- 4:21calling us to go to a new place.
- 4:24Okay.
- 4:25At the same time, we might actually already
- 4:28be in the place where God is calling
- 4:30us to go, so to speak.
- 4:32And so we could ask the question like
- 4:34this, is God calling me to stay?
- 4:37And if you happen to listen to our
- 4:39last episode, my interview with my childhood friend,
- 4:41Zach Wilson, this was kind of where he
- 4:43found himself.
- 4:43He was already in the city of Kalamazoo.
- 4:46He was going on these prayer walks during
- 4:47the pandemic, and he just had this stirring
- 4:49from the Lord for the city he was
- 4:51already in.
- 4:52He was called by God not to leave
- 4:54Kalamazoo for somewhere else, but to stay in
- 4:56Kalamazoo and to work for the benefit of
- 4:58Kalamazoo.
- 4:59And what I love about what Zach shared
- 5:01in that episode is how much he thinks
- 5:03about his work and the significance of his
- 5:05life, not just in terms of himself as
- 5:07an individual, but in terms of his city
- 5:09as a community.
- 5:10He's not just asking, oh, what's next for
- 5:12me in my career so that I can
- 5:14get a raise or accomplish X, Y, or
- 5:16Z.
- 5:16He's asking what does Kalamazoo need as a
- 5:19city and how can I help catalyze that?
- 5:22How can I help gather other young professionals
- 5:24to invest in the future of Kalamazoo so
- 5:27that everybody flourishes?
- 5:27You can see how that attitude of looking
- 5:30at the community and what the community needs
- 5:32is rooted in love of neighbor for Zach.
- 5:35And so I think often that's a helpful
- 5:37paradigm for us too.
- 5:39When we're at a juncture in our career,
- 5:41we want to push back against an overly
- 5:44individualistic way of thinking about our careers.
- 5:48Our tendency in the United States and contemporary
- 5:50Western culture is to think, I'm going to
- 5:53get a degree, and then I'm going to
- 5:54get a job, and I'm going to get
- 5:56the next job, and I'm going to climb
- 5:57the corporate ladder.
- 5:58And the meaning of my career is based
- 6:01on what I achieve as I climb that
- 6:03ladder, even if I'm moving cities or moving
- 6:05locations as I go, rather than a community
- 6:09-based sense of meaning where it's, ah, I
- 6:11derive meaning by being rooted in this community
- 6:14and making a difference in this community.
- 6:17The meaning of my work is not just
- 6:18what I individually achieve.
- 6:20It's what I contribute here in this embodied
- 6:24geographic location.
- 6:26Okay, now, that either or can be, it
- 6:31could sound like, oh, so is it always
- 6:33bad to move locations for a job?
- 6:35Is that somehow unchristian?
- 6:37That's not what I mean to say.
- 6:38What I mean is that we need to
- 6:39push back against the assumptions of our culture.
- 6:42Rather than assuming that our career decisions should
- 6:45always be driven by what is the next
- 6:48step for me as an individual, we need
- 6:51to add into the hopper, add into the
- 6:53equation, into the discernment, the discernment soup that
- 6:57we're mixing as one of the key ingredients.
- 6:59Where is God calling me to go?
- 7:01Or is God calling me to stay?
- 7:03That might be just as significant or more
- 7:05significant for God's purposes in our generation as
- 7:08the specific work we're doing.
- 7:10So we shouldn't just fall into what's the
- 7:12normal cultural pattern.
- 7:14That being said, there may be times when
- 7:15God does call us to change locations for
- 7:17a job where a new where is actually
- 7:21exactly the right thing that God has for
- 7:23us.
- 7:24Okay, so we have these paradigms in scripture
- 7:26of God calling people to go to specific
- 7:28places.
- 7:28We want to be practicing discernment in community
- 7:31to ask when we're at a decision juncture,
- 7:34is there a specific where God is calling
- 7:36me to go?
- 7:37But in the meantime, we always already are
- 7:40where we are.
- 7:41We're already somewhere.
- 7:43And that is also a place where we
- 7:45can honor God.
- 7:46So again, we can ask the question, is
- 7:48God calling me to stay?
- 7:49But until we go, we're there.
- 7:52And so it's sort of our actually our
- 7:53default option to stay, to be where we
- 7:56are.
- 7:56And like I said, I want to go
- 7:58back to the exile part of Israel's story
- 8:00because there's this scriptural paradigm for being where
- 8:03you are.
- 8:04Again, exile was not a fun chapter in
- 8:07the story of Israel.
- 8:08They were in their own land.
- 8:09And then the Babylonians came, destroyed Jerusalem, took
- 8:14exiles over to the empire of Babylon, where
- 8:16they were strangers.
- 8:17They were immigrants.
- 8:18They didn't have cultural influence and power.
- 8:20But that's where they were.
- 8:22And what is the word of the Lord
- 8:23to them in that situation?
- 8:25This is from Jeremiah chapter 29, starting in
- 8:28verse four.
- 9:05So if you're feeling that sense of like
- 9:08kind of being out of sync, out of
- 9:09place, you shouldn't immediately suppose that that means
- 9:13you're supposed to be somewhere else.
- 9:14The Israelites certainly felt out of sync and
- 9:16out of place when they were in exile.
- 9:17But God's word to them in that moment
- 9:19was, stay where you are, put down roots,
- 9:23have families, seek the welfare of the city
- 9:26where I have sent you.
- 9:28And so if we discern that our call
- 9:30from God is to stay, if we've gotten
- 9:31to that point of discernment where our call
- 9:33is to stay where we are, we should
- 9:35think like Zach Wilson.
- 9:36We should think, what does my community need?
- 9:39Not just what's my next achievement point in
- 9:41my career, but what does the community here
- 9:44need?
- 9:44Where is their need here?
- 9:46Where is their injustice here?
- 9:47Where is their ignorance of the good news
- 9:49of Jesus Christ here?
- 9:51Where is their opportunity here to ameliorate those
- 9:53needs, to work for justice, to proclaim the
- 9:55good news, to serve those who are disenfranchised
- 9:58or who are abused?
- 9:59In any community, if you ask that question,
- 10:01what are the needs here?
- 10:02And you ask it with an open heart,
- 10:04you will see lots of needs.
- 10:06There's no need-free community.
- 10:07Even communities that might seem like they don't
- 10:09have as much immediate socioeconomic need.
- 10:11If you ask the question, what does this
- 10:13place need?
- 10:14God will open your eyes.
- 10:16Okay, so I've kind of offered these two
- 10:18paradigms, right?
- 10:20Where is God calling me to go?
- 10:22Or is God calling me to stay?
- 10:26And kind of to give us one more
- 10:28angle on this, I want to talk about
- 10:30the monastic virtue of stability.
- 10:32So this would, again, be on the stay
- 10:34side.
- 10:35Again, we can discern that God may call
- 10:37us to go.
- 10:38But if he's calling us to stay, I
- 10:40think we can lean in to this specific
- 10:42Christian tradition of the monastic virtue of stability.
- 10:45This is something that comes out of the
- 10:47Benedictine tradition.
- 10:48So Saint Benedict of Nursia, he was in
- 10:51Italy in like the five and six hundreds,
- 10:53and he founded a community called Monte Cassino.
- 10:56It was a monastery.
- 10:58And he was kind of a reformer within
- 11:00the monastic movement.
- 11:01So the Christian monastic movement had earlier roots
- 11:03in the early centuries in the desert, where
- 11:06men and women would go and would take
- 11:08vows often of poverty, chastity, and obedience, kind
- 11:11of committing themselves to a life of celibacy
- 11:13and a life of prayer and a life
- 11:14of serving others within a specific community.
- 11:17What had happened in Benedict's time is that
- 11:21people were beginning to abuse and take advantage
- 11:23of this system.
- 11:24And so he talks about a group of
- 11:26folks called the gyrovigs, or literally circle wanderers.
- 11:29And these were monks who essentially started to
- 11:32mooch off of multiple monasteries.
- 11:34They realized, ah, if you go to a
- 11:36monastery for a few days, they welcome you
- 11:38as a guest.
- 11:39They put you up.
- 11:39They feed you.
- 11:40You don't really have to do very much.
- 11:42And if you just keep doing that, it's
- 11:43sort of like an infinite Airbnb 100%
- 11:46off coupon.
- 11:47I just keep switching monasteries, and I never
- 11:49really have to put down roots or do
- 11:50much work.
- 11:51So this is what Saint Benedict has to
- 11:54say about these individuals.
- 11:55He says, and this is in his Rule
- 11:57of Saint Benedict, his classic text.
- 11:59Gyrovigs spend their whole lives tramping from province
- 12:01to province, staying as guests in different monasteries
- 12:04for three or four days at a time,
- 12:05always on the move with no stability.
- 12:08They indulge their own wills and succumb to
- 12:09the allurements of gluttony.
- 12:11Of the miserable conduct of all such men,
- 12:13it is better to be silent than to
- 12:15speak.
- 12:16Really harsh language from Benedict.
- 12:19But what's he attacking here?
- 12:22He's attacking an individualistic way of thinking that's
- 12:25more focused on how do I get what's
- 12:26in it for me than thinking about how
- 12:28you give to the community.
- 12:31So here's a question I want to ask.
- 12:32And again, it is a question.
- 12:34It's not an answer.
- 12:34It's a question.
- 12:35But are you a careerist gyrovig?
- 12:38Are you a circle wanderer in your career?
- 12:40Do you think about your career moves in
- 12:43terms of individualistically what's in it for me,
- 12:45rather than thinking about where you can put
- 12:47down roots to benefit the community?
- 12:51Now, this might be a little counterintuitive again.
- 12:53But one of those things that we can
- 12:55see in the research is that people who
- 12:58stick around and have long-term tenure at
- 13:00a certain organization, they actually add more value
- 13:04than other folks, all other things being equal,
- 13:06right?
- 13:06So there might be other things that vary.
- 13:08Being tenured doesn't make you the best just
- 13:09by itself.
- 13:10But if you're similarly qualified to someone else,
- 13:12and you've been around for 10 years rather
- 13:14than two years, you're actually able to add
- 13:15a lot more value if you've been around
- 13:17for 10 years.
- 13:18This is a study that was published from
- 13:20researchers at the Workforce Sciences Institute.
- 13:22It says, traditional forms of employment, that is
- 13:26businesses with employees who build tenure, are competitively
- 13:29advantaged relative to organizations that opt for alternatives
- 13:32such as contract, gig, and platform workers.
- 13:35These organizations miss out on the business value
- 13:38that tenure and longevity with an employer bring.
- 13:42Okay, what does that mean?
- 13:44That means that one way that you can
- 13:47actually accomplish more meaningful work in the long
- 13:50term, in your career, is by staying in
- 13:53one place.
- 13:54Now, this is counter to often what's economic
- 13:56wisdom in our times, because you may actually
- 13:58earn more money if you hop around, right?
- 14:00Because you can negotiate a raise more easily
- 14:02when you switch than when you stay sometimes.
- 14:05But think about your work, not just in
- 14:07terms of what's in it for you, but
- 14:09in terms of what you're contributing to the
- 14:10mission of your organization.
- 14:12Could there be a kind of monastic virtue
- 14:14of stability for you, like in the Benedictine
- 14:17tradition of staying where you are, thinking about
- 14:19your work in terms of the mission of
- 14:21your organization and the geographic community in which
- 14:23you're placed as a way to love your
- 14:25neighbor as yourself by seeking the welfare of
- 14:27the city that you're in?
- 14:29Again, this isn't necessarily an answer.
- 14:31It's a question.
- 14:32But I think that as disciples of Jesus,
- 14:35we should have a bias toward stability.
- 14:38For the Benedictine monks, they had to take
- 14:39a vow of stability.
- 14:40They had to promise to stay at the
- 14:42monastery and not leave, to stay in one
- 14:43place for the rest of their lives.
- 14:45We may not have to do that.
- 14:46But if we have a bias towards stability,
- 14:48if we say, okay, wherever I am, I'm
- 14:51going to put down roots as best I
- 14:53can and love my neighbor as best I
- 14:54can and think about the community, not just
- 14:56myself, as best I can.
- 14:57I think we're going to realize a lot
- 14:59more fruit than if we have that more
- 15:01individualistic, self-centered way of thinking.
- 15:04As we're asking questions, let's ask, where is
- 15:08God calling me to go?
- 15:10And is God calling me to stay?
- 15:13Lord Jesus, thank you that you travel with
- 15:15us, that you send us and you're with
- 15:17us when we're called to stay and to
- 15:19serve the city we're in.
- 15:21Give us that wisdom and discernment to listen
- 15:23for your voice and to go wherever you
- 15:25would have us go, even if it's right
- 15:27where we already are.
- 15:30Jesus, do your work in us as we
- 15:31do our work with you.
