- 0:39SPEAKER_06: Welcome in everybody to the Talk and Tech Podcast powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:46SPEAKER_06: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:49SPEAKER_06: Tristan, how are you doing today, man?
- 0:51SPEAKER_04: I am just Yankee Doodling through wait week two of the offseason here.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: It's the fourth of July week.
- 0:58SPEAKER_04: I'm ready for the long weekend, as I'm sure many listeners are.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: And I'm ready to talk about some in-between Texas Tech news here.
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we are.
- 1:07SPEAKER_06: We have the running backs episode, by the way, coming up later, but we do have some Texas Tech news to get started off with.
- 1:16SPEAKER_06: The Olympics are coming up.
- 1:23SPEAKER_06: We have some Texas Tech athletes making their way over there, man.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: Dude, it's like one of the best times to of the year whenever the Olympics come on, and I'm ready for it.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: I'm ready to see our Red Raiders in it.
- 1:34SPEAKER_04: Who are we seeing?
- 1:35SPEAKER_06: We are seeing a couple.
- 1:37SPEAKER_06: And now I updated this, I think, two days ago, and I don't think we've had any more get on, but right now I have two.
- 1:44SPEAKER_06: Um, and forgive me for uh possibly butchering this name.
- 1:50SPEAKER_06: Uh uh Kar Krami?
- 1:52SPEAKER_06: Karamy?
- 1:54SPEAKER_06: Karame Bartley, Mr.
- 1:58SPEAKER_06: Bartley, Mr.
- 1:59SPEAKER_06: Bartley representing Jamaica in the 400-meter dash.
- 2:03SPEAKER_06: And then we also have Bernard Keeter representing the US of A in the steeplechase.
- 2:09SPEAKER_06: Do you know what the steeplechase is?
- 2:11SPEAKER_04: Because I don't.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: It's it's one of those weird races where they like have to do different things in the race.
- 2:15SPEAKER_04: It's not just a it's not just running, they have to do like some climbing and stuff like that.
- 2:19SPEAKER_04: It's like it's like a really, really long obstacle course in the most general sense.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: And I hope I'm sure people listening are like, no, it's not.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: It's not like that.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: But like if from off the top of my head, that's what I know about it.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: And and Mr.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: Barley, I mean, talk about joining some blue blood uh runners in Jamaica.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the most famous runner in the world from there right now.
- 2:38SPEAKER_04: Um, but I'm proud to say that we got a guy from the Red, White, and Blue hosting us on that track.
- 2:43SPEAKER_04: So uh definitely cheering for him a little harder than the others, I would say.
- 2:46SPEAKER_06: It's true.
- 2:47SPEAKER_06: We're we're always rooting for our boys from Texas Tech, no matter what country they represent.
- 2:52SPEAKER_06: We get a lot of international talent coming in to our track and field program.
- 2:56SPEAKER_06: So shouts out to these two guys.
- 2:57SPEAKER_06: Hopefully, they do their best.
- 2:58SPEAKER_06: We had a lot of guys go and a lot of ladies as well go to the Olympic uh qualifiers.
- 3:04SPEAKER_06: A lot didn't make it, but they it was just by a little bit.
- 3:07SPEAKER_06: Trey Culver, including one of those guys in the high jump, uh, just missed the mark right there in competing for the U.S.
- 3:13SPEAKER_06: But uh really we're proud of all these all these athletes that come through Texas Tech that even have potential to go to the Olympics because it's such an impressive, impressive group of athletes that are that are in this thing, just in general, and to even be considered for it is is remarkable in and of itself.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: Bro, you're being invited to the most prestigious Olympic team in the world, that is America, and you get to not only that, you get to compete to for a spot to represent your home.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: I mean, I can't really imagine a greater honor as an athlete to do that.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: So just hats off to them to make it that far.
- 3:48SPEAKER_04: You are really going against literally the best in the world to do that.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: So just obviously a pat on the back for making it that far because nothing to be ashamed of there.
- 3:57SPEAKER_04: Absolutely.
- 3:58SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:59SPEAKER_06: Um, so let's move on.
- 4:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, cheer for those two in the Olympics.
- 4:02SPEAKER_06: Let's move on, though, because we had another guy sign professionally for football, our boy Eli Howard, uh, signed with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
- 4:12SPEAKER_06: Uh, I know he had like a training camp invite or was an undrafted free agent signed by the Falcons.
- 4:18SPEAKER_06: I guess that didn't work out for him.
- 4:19SPEAKER_06: So now he is going to the CFL.
- 4:21SPEAKER_06: And man, that's good for him because he's really, if he wants to really pursue a professional career in football, it's good that he's going to the CFL.
- 4:28SPEAKER_06: He'll get some real playing time over there.
- 4:30SPEAKER_06: Good for Eli, man.
- 4:31SPEAKER_06: Dude, for sure.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: There's pretty plenty of players that make it over there and really make a good career out of it.
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, the CFL isn't a joke at all.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: So it's the second best thing you can do.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: So hats off to Eli.
- 4:42SPEAKER_04: He gets he keeps to keep uh making a living, playing the game he loves.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: And really, what's better than that?
- 4:48SPEAKER_04: And he's representing the red and black over in Leafland.
- 4:50SPEAKER_04: So we'll definitely be cheering for him.
- 4:52SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 4:53SPEAKER_06: So shouts out Eli Howard.
- 4:56SPEAKER_06: But we had some awesome news come up over uh the last week.
- 5:01SPEAKER_06: Our boy, J Bob Thomas, Texas Tech Baseball legend now, turning down LSU.
- 5:10SPEAKER_06: Um, the new uh hire over there.
- 5:13SPEAKER_06: I think Jay Johnson, I think is his name from Arizona, just got hired at LSU looking to form his new staff and recruited J Bob to potentially join him on his as head of recruiting at LSU, turned him down to stay at Texas Tech in Lubbock with Coach Tadlock.
- 5:32SPEAKER_04: J Bob turned down one of the most prestigious baseball programs in the nation, and that just shows what he wants to do here and how much he believes in Tim Tadlock.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Nothing says they want to win a national championship more than this staff in their actions these past couple months.
- 5:50SPEAKER_04: They are here to win it all, and I really don't think they're gonna stop until they do.
- 5:54SPEAKER_04: I mean, they're gonna have not even gonna stop after that, of course.
- 5:57SPEAKER_04: Um but this is J Bob's second thumbs down to the SEC.
- 6:02SPEAKER_04: Uh the Aggies apparently tried to take him a couple years ago as well.
- 6:05SPEAKER_06: So the Aggies, the Aggies tried to take another one of our baseball coaches, too.
- 6:10SPEAKER_04: Uh they did.
- 6:11SPEAKER_06: A guy that's in our outro.
- 6:12SPEAKER_06: Uh, the Aggies can't steal our baseball guys, and neither can LSU, which is neither can UT.
- 6:19SPEAKER_06: And neither can UT.
- 6:20SPEAKER_06: Nobody can steal them.
- 6:21SPEAKER_06: They're here to stay.
- 6:22SPEAKER_06: If this isn't proof enough, I I don't know what to tell you because uh these guys have been nothing but great to the program and nothing but loyal to Texas Tech.
- 6:31SPEAKER_06: So shouts out to J Bob and Tim Tadlin.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: Man, it's it just ended, but I'm ready to see a full-fledged, healthy Texas Tech diamond team, man.
- 6:41SPEAKER_04: I'm ready for it.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm ready to see what damage we can do.
- 6:44SPEAKER_06: Please, it's a long offseason.
- 6:46SPEAKER_06: Let's get our boys healthy and ready to go for next year.
- 6:50SPEAKER_06: There was some bad news on the baseball front.
- 6:52SPEAKER_06: Uh, we had some transfers, uh, guys that have put their name in the portal.
- 6:56SPEAKER_06: Uh Max Marasek, who uh transferred to Louisiana, to the Raging Cajuns.
- 7:02SPEAKER_06: Uh good luck to him.
- 7:03SPEAKER_06: He didn't play a ton this year.
- 7:04SPEAKER_06: I'm not sure if it was injury related or not, but he is not going to be with Texas Tech next year.
- 7:08SPEAKER_06: And then the biggest of all, Nate Romback, uh a guy who was in the batting order, a guy who played a lot for Texas Tech, especially down the stretch, uh, is deciding to transfer out of Texas Tech.
- 7:20SPEAKER_06: Uh now, I guess this is just the name of the game in college sports with everything these days.
- 7:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, I thought Romback would have had a really big spot on next year's team.
- 7:29SPEAKER_06: Uh, but that could potentially, you know, just mean that we're bringing in other guys to potentially replace him, you know?
- 7:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's exactly what I was thinking.
- 7:36SPEAKER_04: It makes you wonder what's going on behind the scenes that we can't see.
- 7:40SPEAKER_04: So I'm wondering if he's feeling some pressure pressure from the guys behind him where he's thinking his best shot at getting all the playing time he can, so he can perhaps look towards his future, it's elsewhere.
- 7:50SPEAKER_04: Um, at this point in our program, I'm not too concerned about losing a guy or two because it's probably they're probably leaving for their right reasons.
- 7:58SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's it's probably nothing with the coaching staff or anything like that, or or bad chemistry within the locker room.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: Um they're probably just looking for their best interest.
- 8:06SPEAKER_04: And the nice thing about being one of the biggest things in college baseball is we probably have plenty of guys on docket to reload and just fill in immediately.
- 8:14SPEAKER_06: Yeah, it's just tough for uh our guy Rob Rowe, who can no longer do the ROM blast tweet.
- 8:20SPEAKER_06: Um, it's just tough, it's just tough out here.
- 8:22SPEAKER_06: That's probably the saddest part of this whole thing.
- 8:24SPEAKER_06: Born one out, pour one out for the ROM blast.
- 8:29SPEAKER_06: Uh but moving on from baseball, it's a long offseason.
- 8:33SPEAKER_06: We'll see how the team comes together for next year.
- 8:35SPEAKER_06: But moving on to some basketball stuff before we get into our running back segment.
- 8:40SPEAKER_06: Uh, Mark Adams had a great article written about him over the past week by CJ Moore of The Athletic.
- 8:48SPEAKER_06: And this was really, if you haven't checked it out yet, this was the first piece of media that gave Mark Adams the credit he deserves and didn't really mention Beard much.
- 8:57SPEAKER_06: Beard was mentioned because obviously he's gonna be mentioned in anything with Mark Adams, especially right now, but he was in it very uh limitedly.
- 9:07SPEAKER_06: Limitedly, is that a word?
- 9:08SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 9:09SPEAKER_06: He he wasn't in there a ton, and uh really this whole thing was about Mark Adams and what he is gonna bring to Texas Tech and his whole past, his coaching mentality, everything about Mark Adams.
- 9:21SPEAKER_06: Please go read this article because it was fantastic.
- 9:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was just about to say this is like the first in-depth look we've seen of the Coach Adams Texas Tech basketball program, like on all levels.
- 9:34SPEAKER_04: So it was really cool.
- 9:36SPEAKER_04: The uh the author did an amazing job going through everything and just giving the respect where it roles due.
- 9:41SPEAKER_04: So it it made me pretty emotional reading it because Coach Adams seems like a really emotionally charged guy, you know.
- 9:48SPEAKER_04: Anytime he brings up the way the way he is, is because like of his father and his brother and the way he speaks about them now, you know, we mixing with basketball, even though they have nothing to do with basketball, it's still it's still just such a charge for him.
- 10:02SPEAKER_04: And it's a little heartbreaking when he talks about it too.
- 10:04SPEAKER_04: But man, I if you're not a coach Adams fan and if you feel unsure about the direction this basketball program is going, I think you should just toss that out the window after looking at these.
- 10:16SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 10:17SPEAKER_06: I mean, uh, we tweeted this out, but really the one word to describe him is genuine.
- 10:21SPEAKER_06: Uh, he really seems he has been through every single level of college basketball.
- 10:27SPEAKER_06: I mean, he was even in minor league hockey for a little bit as a as a general manager.
- 10:32SPEAKER_06: He's seen the trenches and he's been at the tops of the tops in the national championship with us.
- 10:36SPEAKER_06: So, really, this guy believes in what he does.
- 10:41SPEAKER_06: And his, I mean, it's shown his defense has been one of the most elite in all of college basketball for the last four or five years.
- 10:50SPEAKER_06: Um, and I'm just I'm honored to have him as our head coach.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: I really am.
- 10:53SPEAKER_06: I mean, you talk about people, we talk about Tim Tadlock all the time, how he's the perfect Texas Tech coach.
- 11:00SPEAKER_06: Mark Adams joins him with that because he is a West Texas guy, a Texas Tech guy, and he wants to stay here and win here and not looking for that next job like Chris Beard.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: Dude, you're speaking for me, you're speaking for all of us.
- 11:11SPEAKER_04: I think you really nailed that there.
- 11:13SPEAKER_04: Uh, we could just sit here and brag about him all day right now.
- 11:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, like you just said, he has been the number we he's been the highest average defensive efficiency over the past few years in all of college hoops.
- 11:25SPEAKER_04: That is insane.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: And the cool thing about that is this guy's the architect of the defense, he is the mad scientist.
- 11:33SPEAKER_04: We love saying that, but that is him.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: He's the one that made that, and he's gonna keep continuing that on.
- 11:37SPEAKER_04: And all right, dude, let's talk about it real quick.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: What can Texas Tech fans look forward to on the other side of the court?
- 11:45SPEAKER_06: Well, so from this article and from everything that we've heard since Mark Adams got hired, he wants to up the tempo on the offense.
- 11:52SPEAKER_06: Something that not enough people are talking about from the last couple seasons is the offense was Chris Beard's offense, and that was the low point of our teams.
- 12:03SPEAKER_06: It was not the defense, that was Mark Adams, man.
- 12:06SPEAKER_06: I mean, some people will say the substituting was off at times, some people maybe, and Mark Adams was in charge of the substitutions as well.
- 12:13SPEAKER_06: Um the the defense is gonna be the same.
- 12:17SPEAKER_06: Mark Adams is still here, the offense is gonna change, and that was the low point of last year's team.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: So get Chris Beard out of here, that offense goes out of here as well.
- 12:26SPEAKER_06: So get a brand new offense in here, brand new style.
- 12:29SPEAKER_06: Uh, also, something that I thought was really cool was the just the overall outpouring of support from uh former players and even from people that aren't even associated with Texas Tech, Glenn Sigayama, I think is how you say his last name.
- 12:45SPEAKER_06: He tried to hire Mark Adams back a couple years ago for the Chicago Bulls assistant coaching job because he saw that defensive mindset that Adams brought to the table and wanted him to be in the NBA.
- 12:58SPEAKER_06: And then he called Kirby Hokutt after Chris Beard left and was like, Listen, you're making a mistake if you're not hiring Mark Adams here.
- 13:05SPEAKER_06: And one of his best quotes was Adams is one of the best basketball minds that no one has heard of.
- 13:10SPEAKER_06: And so stuff like that just makes me giddy, man.
- 13:13SPEAKER_06: It gets me excited for what he's going to bring to this program and just how we're gonna compete next year.
- 13:19SPEAKER_04: Dude, I was saying the same exact thing having the Chicago Bulls, the NBA, want your guy, your assistant coach at the time to come up to the highest level, and then he calls Texas Tech when nothing was owed to him to do so.
- 13:37SPEAKER_04: He didn't owe it to Texas Tech to do that at all.
- 13:39SPEAKER_04: He just said, Let me literally said, Let me save y'all a lot of time.
- 13:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 13:44SPEAKER_04: So what just an incredible thing for the outpouring of support from on the outside of the program.
- 13:49SPEAKER_04: But the most important thing is the players, you know.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: Every single player said it's Mark Adams.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: And what's really cool is all of them were saying that they were closer to Mark Adams than they were to Chris Beard.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: And that just comes back to what you were saying about how genuine the man is.
- 14:06SPEAKER_04: Like this guy is a no BS, he is not a skeezy car salesman.
- 14:10SPEAKER_04: What you see is what you get with Mark Adams in the truest sense, even on the recruiting trail, it seems.
- 14:15SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:16SPEAKER_06: And uh look at the guys you stayed, Kevin McCullough and you know, all these guys vouch for Mark Adams and and say they wouldn't play for any other coach.
- 14:24SPEAKER_06: Terrence Shannon had a great quote in that article saying he would play for no other coach if he decides to come back to college basketball than Mark Adams.
- 14:32SPEAKER_06: This Mark Adams isn't the guy who was his head coach in in at Texas Tech.
- 14:37SPEAKER_06: It was Chris Beard, and he's still saying that about Mark Adams.
- 14:40SPEAKER_06: So uh just such good, such good stuff from former players.
- 14:46SPEAKER_06: Matt Mooney was in the article as well.
- 14:47SPEAKER_06: He said so many good things, and and everybody, I mean Justin Gray, Norren Sodiase, Keenan Evans, all these guys have said just unbelievable stuff about Mark Adams, and this article just emphasized that even more.
- 14:59SPEAKER_04: Absolutely, nothing but love, man.
- 15:00SPEAKER_04: Like just every player he's touched has just thrown it right back at him.
- 15:04SPEAKER_04: How much they they respect him and how much they appreciate what he did for them.
- 15:07SPEAKER_04: And and man, we got our guy.
- 15:10SPEAKER_04: And another really cool tidbit in this was that the the author was really insinuating that the stay in the fight mentality did not come from Chris Beard.
- 15:20SPEAKER_04: No, because he he kept he kept bringing back up uh Mark Adams' boxing past, and he's saying, I think I have a really good feeling about where the stay in the fight came from, and that's really good to really good to hear because that was like one of Chris Beard's big punchlines, obviously another fake.
- 15:36SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's cool to see that that culture part is still there, you know.
- 15:41SPEAKER_04: That that's that that that edge is still there.
- 15:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 15:46SPEAKER_06: So if y'all haven't checked it out, go see written by CJ Moore of the Athletic, go read it because it was one of the best articles I've read in this college basketball offseason.
- 15:55SPEAKER_06: But we did mention Terrence Shannon earlier, and some big stuff came out.
- 15:59SPEAKER_06: I mean, not necessarily concerning Terrence Shannon, but ESPN came out with their latest mock draft.
- 16:05SPEAKER_06: And I mean, they they did both rounds, and they had there was no Terrence Shannon, no Mac McClung in sight on their mock draft.
- 16:14SPEAKER_06: So that was super surprising to me because I was convinced Terrence Shannon was, you know, at least making a name for himself, being invited to the NBA combine, all that kind of stuff, and he was nowhere to be seen in ESPN's mock draft.
- 16:30SPEAKER_06: So, really, I think this just I think this is more leaning.
- 16:35SPEAKER_06: Last episode I said it was about a 95 to 5% chance he was gonna stay in the NBA.
- 16:40SPEAKER_06: Now I'm not so convinced.
- 16:41SPEAKER_06: Now I'm gonna put it probably at maybe 60-40 right now.
- 16:44SPEAKER_06: But um, I don't know if that's I don't I I don't I don't want to say that that's like a good thing because you know you want the best for these guys, but also if Terrence Shannon wants to come back, dude, come on back, man.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you're right, man.
- 16:57SPEAKER_04: It's two sides of a coin.
- 16:58SPEAKER_04: On one side, I'm really disappointed that he's not seeing the numbers that we thought we were gonna see.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: We were thinking this guy was like maybe like late first round, early second round kind of guy, and uh, I guess it's really not shaping up to be that way, but on the other hand, you can look forward to the good chance of him coming back and being a real leader on this team and just bawling the heck out, and something for him I'm sure he is considering since you've probably been speaking with the snap and all that is he's gonna come back and see a whole new offense, something that can really utilize his freak athleticism and just showcase what a superstar the guy is.
- 17:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 17:37SPEAKER_06: I agree 100%.
- 17:39SPEAKER_06: There's also another tidbit that I don't really think anybody is talking about yet.
- 17:42SPEAKER_06: Uh, Daniel Bacho, the transfer from Arizona, is still not with the team.
- 17:49SPEAKER_06: I was going through some old tweets the other day and I saw that he deleted his commitment post on Twitter.
- 17:56SPEAKER_06: And we have seen what has happened after that happens, uh, at Kyler Edwards uh after deleting a commitment to Texas Tech, and then he decides to look elsewhere.
- 18:06SPEAKER_06: He still hasn't joined the team yet.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: So I'm not even expecting Daniel Boccio to be with this team next season.
- 18:11SPEAKER_06: That leaves another scholarship spot open for Terrence Shannon for another transfer coming in, whoever.
- 18:20SPEAKER_06: So uh really the Boccio stuff doesn't concern me that much.
- 18:23SPEAKER_06: He's been very injured the last couple seasons.
- 18:26SPEAKER_06: He is a big guy.
- 18:27SPEAKER_06: We're lacking in that end.
- 18:28SPEAKER_06: This could be something with Bryson Williams committing, and Boccio didn't like that because he's taking some of his minutes away.
- 18:34SPEAKER_06: I don't know, man.
- 18:35SPEAKER_06: I don't read this guy, I can't read this guy's mind, but I will say that I do not really expect Daniel Boccio to be on this team next season.
- 18:43SPEAKER_04: That's disappointing.
- 18:45SPEAKER_04: I mean, that was that was a guy that we were like finally we're getting some some height on the team to fill in that that empty space.
- 18:50SPEAKER_04: But it looks like, you know, like you're saying with Bryson Williams, I don't know I it sounds like the team has kind of figured it out, but you know, obviously I want him to come, but you know, if we have that extra scholarship you're just talking about with their other fellas, I mean I'm not gonna I'm not gonna argue with them.
- 19:05SPEAKER_04: And it's not even just the transfer portal that's looking pretty good right now.
- 19:08SPEAKER_04: You you could see Mark Adams and Co.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: going hard at some high school recruits right now, like they're that they are gunning for not only three stars, but four stars as well.
- 19:16SPEAKER_04: I really like that they're still establishing themselves as a a top dog in the college basketball world that doesn't need to look for scraps, that we can go and get our first choices.
- 19:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:27SPEAKER_06: So let's move on because we got to get to this running back segment.
- 19:31SPEAKER_06: But we have two more things before that.
- 19:32SPEAKER_06: TCU basketball probation.
- 19:35SPEAKER_06: Uh-oh.
- 19:36SPEAKER_06: Ooh.
- 19:37SPEAKER_06: Uh-oh, TCU.
- 19:39SPEAKER_06: Uh, yeah, they got put on three-year probation, according to John Rosteen.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: Such a shame.
- 19:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, such, you know, that just stinks.
- 19:47SPEAKER_06: You know, as Texas Tech fans, we just hate it for TCU that they get put on probation.
- 19:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, they had some uh illegal stuff, I guess, go on with a former assistant coach that's no longer there.
- 19:59SPEAKER_06: Uh the program gets uh, you know, the NCA man, they're just all jacked up.
- 20:04SPEAKER_06: I I you know, I I don't really know how they can not punish a program like North Carolina, who had their thing a whole few years ago, LSU who's had multiple issues, uh all sorts of stuff, and then they go after like TCU.
- 20:19SPEAKER_06: And it's it's like, guys, there's some bigger stuff going on than probably what happened at TCU, but you know, they're getting put over.
- 20:27SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I know.
- 20:29SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, I mean, it a nice uh choice there, uh Micah.
- 20:34SPEAKER_04: But uh yeah, yeah.
- 20:35SPEAKER_06: It sucks for Micah PV, who did transfer over there, but you know, uh it it's just it's just a weird thing that's gonna go on with them.
- 20:43SPEAKER_06: Uh, they also get a five thousand dollar fine.
- 20:46SPEAKER_06: I know that's such a big steep.
- 20:49SPEAKER_06: That's big time for the for the university.
- 20:52SPEAKER_06: Uh and then also, plus, they get fined one whole percent of the men's basketball budget.
- 20:59SPEAKER_04: So it's gonna be a tough running there.
- 21:03SPEAKER_06: This is like the Joe Exotic.
- 21:05SPEAKER_06: I don't know how I will ever financially recover from this.
- 21:10SPEAKER_04: You're dealing with a private school where their finances are like kind of very sketchy backdoors in general.
- 21:16SPEAKER_06: So yeah, very sketchy.
- 21:17SPEAKER_06: How about just how about just tell us?
- 21:19SPEAKER_06: How about don't keep it under the rug?
- 21:22SPEAKER_06: But yeah, man, uh, you know, don't feel bad for TCU.
- 21:26SPEAKER_04: No, no, sorry.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, and uh before we start digging further into the uh uh into the running backs and such, what was the other thing you had?
- 21:35SPEAKER_04: We had the Vegas line for I was about to say the same thing, just saying if you're on my page here.
- 21:39SPEAKER_06: No, I'm I'm there with you, man.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: We've been doing this pod for a while.
- 21:42SPEAKER_06: I think we're we're pretty on the same page right here.
- 21:44SPEAKER_06: But absolutely Texas Tech Houston first game of the football season has a line from Vegas.
- 21:52SPEAKER_06: It is tech minus seven against the Kooks.
- 21:56SPEAKER_06: Higher than I expected.
- 21:58SPEAKER_06: What about you?
- 21:59SPEAKER_06: Definitely, definitely.
- 22:00SPEAKER_06: Higher than I expected.
- 22:01SPEAKER_06: This could obviously change.
- 22:02SPEAKER_06: The game is months away still.
- 22:04SPEAKER_06: But to have the initial line with both teams pretty established, I mean, I don't think there's going to be much movement on either end on you know, transfers and stuff.
- 22:13SPEAKER_06: All these teams are pretty much over it.
- 22:14SPEAKER_06: But for us to be, I mean, favored by a whole touchdown, I uh hey, maybe maybe Vegas likes Texas Tech.
- 22:22SPEAKER_04: Hey, I'm cool with it.
- 22:23SPEAKER_04: You know, Vegas usually has a little uh idea of what's going on.
- 22:26SPEAKER_04: People people like to put their money where they think it's gonna go right.
- 22:29SPEAKER_04: So um, I like the line, you know, obviously as a tech fan, but this is just such a big game for both programs going into game one.
- 22:38SPEAKER_04: You like I know we talk about all the time how this is gonna really set the tone for our season, but the same is true for U of H.
- 22:43SPEAKER_04: You know, Dan Holgerson has been lackluster at U of H.
- 22:48SPEAKER_04: U of H was a staple in the American, and they have been quiet.
- 22:52SPEAKER_04: So they're they're probably really heating up his seat as well.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: So it's a battle of uh coach hot seats, it looks like.
- 22:58SPEAKER_04: So who can cool it off?
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Looks like Vegas thinks it's tech.
- 23:01SPEAKER_04: So I really hope so.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: I hope it's tech too, Vegas.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: It'd be a great start to the season, man.
- 23:07SPEAKER_04: Like that would be such a great dub.
- 23:08SPEAKER_06: It was, it will, and uh hopefully it, yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_06: Uh I just want to win, man.
- 23:13SPEAKER_06: I just want some more wins.
- 23:14SPEAKER_06: Me too, man.
- 23:15SPEAKER_06: Whether we win by one or seven, I or twenty, I don't care.
- 23:19SPEAKER_06: As long as no, I do care.
- 23:20SPEAKER_04: I care between one and twenty something.
- 23:23SPEAKER_06: I don't know, man.
- 23:24SPEAKER_06: I like I'm just I'm hoping just to win this U of H game.
- 23:27SPEAKER_06: I don't want like, you know, like there's just so many things, so many unknowns going into the year about this team.
- 23:33SPEAKER_06: Uh, but we should get into this year's team and the Big 12.
- 23:39SPEAKER_06: We are doing uh our offseason episode number two.
- 23:42SPEAKER_06: So we're talking about the running backs with this episode.
- 23:45SPEAKER_06: We're gonna give our top five Texas Tech running backs of all time here in a second, but first we have to talk about the starting running backs in the Big 12 versus Sir Roderick Thompson.
- 23:56SPEAKER_06: Um, and we're gonna go into it.
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: I Matt Wells is gonna run this running back by committee.
- 24:02SPEAKER_06: He's gonna have Xavier White involved, he's gonna have Tosh Brooks also involved, probably some other guys sprinkled in there.
- 24:08SPEAKER_06: But Sir Roderick Thompson is the main back of this group, and that's what I'm basing this off of.
- 24:13SPEAKER_06: Um, so when we do our breakdown of the entire team later on in the offseason, closer to the start of the UH U of H game, we're gonna give you a breakdown of everybody, but right now we're talking about Sir Roderick Thompson versus the other starting backs in the Big 12.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I think that's that's what everyone's you know looking for.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: It's definitely gonna be Sir Roderick Thompson leading the pack.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: So, but I do like the names behind him, but I definitely want to see one establish themselves.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: I think that's really important in the position, um, because we definitely need that reliability.
- 24:42SPEAKER_04: And I'm hoping Sir Roderick's body is ready to stay healthy in it.
- 24:47SPEAKER_06: So yeah, and well, and that's been the one drawback from Sir Roderick's uh career at Texas Tech has been he's he's injured a lot, and including this past offseason, he is he's currently injured right now with that uh elbow or shoulder, whatever he he hurt uh before the spring game.
- 25:04SPEAKER_06: Uh so you know that's been his biggest drawback.
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: We're gonna go into the tiers that we have of the Big 12 running backs.
- 25:11SPEAKER_06: So let's just let's just start there, man.
- 25:14SPEAKER_06: Uh I don't know how you did it with your tiers, but for my tiers, I have five tiers of running backs in the Big 12.
- 25:22SPEAKER_06: And in tier one, the only tier or the only one in tier one for me, Brees Hall of Iowa State.
- 25:31SPEAKER_06: Uh he's clearly, to me, the best running back in the Big 12.
- 25:35SPEAKER_06: He showed it last season.
- 25:36SPEAKER_06: He led all of FPS in yards and was second in rushing touchdowns last season.
- 25:43SPEAKER_06: ISU's offense is based around Brees Hall.
- 25:46SPEAKER_06: I know they have a lot of weapons.
- 25:48SPEAKER_06: They go where Brees Hall takes them, and that's why he is number one and alone on this list for me in tier one of Big 12 running backs.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: He's a Heisman favorite.
- 25:59SPEAKER_04: That's that was a perfectly logical thing to do.
- 26:01SPEAKER_04: I was gonna say the same thing, you know, it's it's Brees Hall number one.
- 26:05SPEAKER_04: So, but uh that's so Sir Roderick is not in that zone, unfortunately.
- 26:10SPEAKER_04: But um, well, we're definitely gonna be competitive.
- 26:12SPEAKER_04: So let's let's keep climbing down the ladder.
- 26:14SPEAKER_06: We'll keep going.
- 26:15SPEAKER_06: Tier two also did not have Sir Roderick Thompson, in my opinion.
- 26:19SPEAKER_06: Uh, a lot of people's this can this could change throughout, you never know.
- 26:23SPEAKER_06: Uh, and it's also not a bad thing, by the way, to be in tier two, three, or four in this conference, because this conference is loaded with running back talent.
- 26:34SPEAKER_04: But that's different to say the generally this decade.
- 26:37SPEAKER_06: I know it's it's weird.
- 26:39SPEAKER_06: Going through this and doing the research, I was blown away with how many good running backs we have in this conference.
- 26:44SPEAKER_06: So let's get into tier two, which are Bijan Robinson from UT, Kennedy Brooks from OU, and Letty Brown from West Virginia, in my opinion.
- 26:54SPEAKER_06: Uh, let's start with Bijan, man.
- 26:55SPEAKER_06: He's a big back, six foot, 222 pounds.
- 26:58SPEAKER_06: Um, didn't have a big role at UT until three games into the season, until like three games into last season.
- 27:05SPEAKER_06: Uh, but his final two games of UT season against K-State and Colorado, he rushed for a combined 355 yards and four touchdowns in just those two games.
- 27:15SPEAKER_06: Uh, had a couple breakout performances, also had 88 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
- 27:20SPEAKER_06: Um, the thing about him that a lot of people are putting him in the Brees Hall level to start the year.
- 27:26SPEAKER_06: I don't necessarily agree with that.
- 27:27SPEAKER_06: I think he has to prove more.
- 27:29SPEAKER_06: He didn't really show up against the awesome teams like the Oklahoma State, he had a pretty eh game.
- 27:34SPEAKER_06: Iowa State, he had a pretty and game.
- 27:37SPEAKER_06: So he's still gonna prove it to me to be to put him in that tier one.
- 27:41SPEAKER_06: I know he's super talented.
- 27:42SPEAKER_06: He's got uh, you know, he's he's he's getting a lot of love going into this year from everybody, but that's just UT, you know.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, for sure.
- 27:49SPEAKER_04: He uh outside of Brees Hall, he's probably the one being talked about the most, but he's like the most unproven good as well.
- 27:54SPEAKER_04: So but I I do agree with you.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's just it's kind of like when you talk about most CT players, like the talent and the the body is there, um, but they're not necessarily executed the way you would expect.
- 28:04SPEAKER_04: So I hope he's not.
- 28:05SPEAKER_04: But but no, this this again, you're I like your tiers.
- 28:09SPEAKER_04: We're just gonna roll with yours.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: I think that's a good one to go with.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: Um, because I I think I know where you're putting Sir Rodrick next, even unless you, of course, you have the other two to talk about.
- 28:18SPEAKER_06: No, yeah, I'm gonna talk about the other two before we get to Sir Roderick.
- 28:21SPEAKER_06: Uh, one more thing with Bijan, they have a new quarterback going into the season.
- 28:25SPEAKER_06: I'm sure Coach Sark is going to rely a lot on Bijan Robinson to start the year.
- 28:31SPEAKER_06: Uh, and they have a couple tough opponents to start the year.
- 28:33SPEAKER_06: They play the Ration Cajuns of Louisiana and they play Arkansas, who is not going to be nearly as bad as they have been in the past couple seasons.
- 28:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, I could be wrong there, but I don't think Arkansas is going to be nearly as bad as what they have been putting out on the field.
- 28:47SPEAKER_06: But back to the quarterback situation, they have a brand new, they don't have Sim Ellinger anymore.
- 28:52SPEAKER_06: So uh really, we haven't seen either of these guys play collegiate football, whoever is going to take that starting spot for Texas.
- 28:59SPEAKER_06: So Bijan, I'm expecting him to get a lot of carries early.
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's that's a great point.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: I didn't I didn't even think about that.
- 29:06SPEAKER_04: So it sounds like they're probably gonna be running with a run heavy offense, which you're probably spot on there.
- 29:10SPEAKER_06: So yeah, I mean, and it could change.
- 29:12SPEAKER_06: You know, some of these guys could show out and they could have something, I don't know.
- 29:16SPEAKER_06: But uh, I think if you have a talent like Bichon, you go to him early uh and let the offense kind of initiate itself from there.
- 29:23SPEAKER_06: So moving on, let's go to Kennedy Brooks of Oklahoma.
- 29:28SPEAKER_06: Opted out of last season due to health concerns with COVID-19.
- 29:33SPEAKER_06: Um, but but before that, in 2018 and 2019, he had back-to-back thousand-yard seasons for the Sooners.
- 29:40SPEAKER_06: Uh, tremendous back.
- 29:41SPEAKER_06: He's very talented.
- 29:42SPEAKER_06: Um, it's it's still a little unknown how he's gonna do after a uh more than a year off of playing college football.
- 29:50SPEAKER_06: His last game was against the 2019 LSU Tigers in the college football playoff and Joe Burrow.
- 29:56SPEAKER_06: So that was the last time he played collegiate football.
- 29:59SPEAKER_06: So I'm not saying he can't just like get back into the swing of things.
- 30:03SPEAKER_06: He's working out, obviously, doing all that kind of stuff, but uh you just don't know.
- 30:07SPEAKER_06: It's kind of unknown if you haven't played football in you know almost two years.
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what's gonna be interesting about him is he's gonna be playing with Heisman uh Heisman favorite and spinner, Spencer Rattler.
- 30:18SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure he is that he's definitely gonna be worked into the offense, but I don't know how hard they're gonna lean on him, whenever they're gonna be slinging it as much as they are.
- 30:26SPEAKER_04: Um, but the guy's probably gonna get it done when he needs to.
- 30:29SPEAKER_04: So he's still obviously a scary offensive threat coming out of OU.
- 30:33SPEAKER_04: So I mean, uh it's gonna be tough putting any OU player below a tier two.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: So I think this is a good spot for him.
- 30:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 30:41SPEAKER_06: And then moving on to our final tier two guy, Letty Brown from West Virginia, kind of an underrated guy for how much production he had last season.
- 30:51SPEAKER_06: Thousand-yard rusher for West Virginia last season.
- 30:53SPEAKER_06: He was 14th in all of Division I.
- 30:56SPEAKER_06: Uh, he's a grinder, man.
- 30:57SPEAKER_06: He had six 20-plus carry games in 2020.
- 31:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, they relied on him heavily, kind of due to them not having a great quarterback.
- 31:07SPEAKER_06: Kind of them due to Letty Brown being able to handle that workload.
- 31:12SPEAKER_06: Um, but man, the last thing I'll say on him, kind of the same as Bichon.
- 31:17SPEAKER_06: He struggled in the ranked matchups against the good teams last season.
- 31:20SPEAKER_06: Uh, he struggled as a receiver as well.
- 31:22SPEAKER_06: But uh, for him to be 14th in all of you know Division I last season, you got to put him in this tier two.
- 31:29SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was about to say he got a lot of production because of the production wasn't coming elsewhere.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: And the good news is that is the same quarterback on this team.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: So we're probably gonna see a very similar offense out of West Virginia, which is good because Matt Wells seems to have some sort of West Virginia bane.
- 31:47SPEAKER_04: He's just like, oh, I don't care about the Malineers, it's go time.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: Kansas Jayhawks, uh-oh, but Mountaineer, Mountaineer.
- 31:56SPEAKER_06: It's like no chance.
- 31:58SPEAKER_06: The one team that Matt Wells has really just had had his hand on is freaking West Virginia, man.
- 32:04SPEAKER_06: I don't I don't really understand it.
- 32:05SPEAKER_06: No one's really gotten it yet, but uh we It clipped Weeks very stunk against them, so like I don't I don't understand.
- 32:13SPEAKER_06: College football, college football doesn't make sense, man.
- 32:15SPEAKER_06: But uh Letty Brown is a very talented back.
- 32:18SPEAKER_06: He did have a very uh heavy workload last season, so we'll see if he can handle that again going into this coming season, but hadn't put him in tier two.
- 32:27SPEAKER_06: Let's go to tier three.
- 32:28SPEAKER_06: Uh, I got three guys in tier three, uh, including our own Sir Rodrick Thompson in tier three, along with Deuce Vaughn of Kansas State and Zach Evans of TCU.
- 32:39SPEAKER_06: This is a very talented group.
- 32:41SPEAKER_06: Don't let tier three just put you, you know, down.
- 32:44SPEAKER_06: All these other guys are awesome as well.
- 32:46SPEAKER_06: But tier being a tier three guy is a good thing, and Sir Roderick Thompson is very solid.
- 32:53SPEAKER_06: Let's just talk about him right now because he is a very, very talented running back that we have at Texas Tech.
- 33:01SPEAKER_06: The only thing that is a bad is is on the bad side for Sir Roderick is his injury history.
- 33:08SPEAKER_06: The dude cannot stay healthy, and you'll see in some of the games the the stats don't tell the whole story when you're looking back at old games.
- 33:16SPEAKER_06: Because so many of these games, it's like, will Sir Roderick Thompson play because he is injured?
- 33:22SPEAKER_06: Is he gonna play through that injury?
- 33:24SPEAKER_06: So this guy just needs to be healthy, man.
- 33:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, another offensive player that's been plagued by the injury bug, the other one transferred to Michigan.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: Um, so that that's the most disappointing thing because statistically, whenever you look at a sort of game to game breakdown, he's he's pretty middle of the road um in the Big 12, which is good.
- 33:44SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm I'm fine with having a number five guy.
- 33:47SPEAKER_04: So uh because I just want some reliability, some some constant production to move us down the field, and that's what we're looking for with Sir Roderick.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Um, and like you're saying, the guy, the guy's got the talent there.
- 33:57SPEAKER_04: He's he's definitely shown signs to be one of the better running backs we've had in a while.
- 34:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just man, it's it's just one thing you can't like measure in college football is is he gonna get injured?
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: You know, it's just something, it's just the unpredictability of the sport, which really stinks because I think the guy is has a bright future, and maybe this season he's got bones of steel.
- 34:19SPEAKER_06: Who knows, man?
- 34:20SPEAKER_06: I dude's gotta drink a little milk.
- 34:23SPEAKER_06: I don't know, but uh and really the only thing, the only other thing that would put him in tier three for me, he's not an every down back.
- 34:30SPEAKER_06: We are gonna run a running back by committee.
- 34:33SPEAKER_06: We are gonna get Xavier White involved, we are gonna get Taj Brooks involved.
- 34:37SPEAKER_06: Uh, so Sir Roderick Thompson is not a three-down back like Brees Hall, like uh Letty Brown, like those guys.
- 34:44SPEAKER_06: He's he's he's gonna be the main back, but he's not gonna be the only back on this Texas Tech team.
- 34:49SPEAKER_06: But the talent is there.
- 34:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and if if he ends up as a tier three quarterback, I think we'll have a very solid season, which is what we're looking for.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: And uh do you know how many years this young man has left?
- 35:02SPEAKER_06: Uh I'm not sure right now.
- 35:03SPEAKER_06: COVID kind of jacked everything up, you know, with with I think he's still technically a sophomore, I guess.
- 35:09SPEAKER_06: Uh so he's got a couple, he's got a few years remaining, but uh don't quote me on that because he could be a junior.
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 35:15SPEAKER_06: He's got a couple years remaining at least.
- 35:17SPEAKER_06: So I can tell you that with full confidence.
- 35:20SPEAKER_06: But let's move on to the other tier three backs, Deuce Vaughn from Kansas State.
- 35:26SPEAKER_06: A little slippery SOB, man.
- 35:28SPEAKER_06: I made a lot of noise out of that Wildcat team.
- 35:31SPEAKER_06: He kind of came out of nowhere.
- 35:33SPEAKER_06: He did.
- 35:34SPEAKER_06: As we all know, Kansas State just freaking plummeted last year.
- 35:38SPEAKER_06: They ended the season losing what, five or six in a row.
- 35:41SPEAKER_06: But before that, Deuce Vaughn was really making a name for himself.
- 35:45SPEAKER_06: And I mean, there's so many uh comparisons to um oh god, what's his name?
- 35:51SPEAKER_06: I can't remember his name now.
- 35:52SPEAKER_06: The other Kansas State small dude.
- 35:54SPEAKER_06: Um Darren Sproles.
- 35:57SPEAKER_06: There you go.
- 35:58SPEAKER_06: Um, yeah, I mean, just instant comparisons because Kansas State, I uh Deuce Vaughn's five foot five, dude.
- 36:04SPEAKER_06: He is a small, small dude, 168 pounds, but he's super quick and he's really good at avoiding the defense.
- 36:11SPEAKER_06: Uh, he's also got great receiving ability, had three 80 plus yard receiving games last season.
- 36:17SPEAKER_06: So he was very involved in the passing game, just as much as he was the running game.
- 36:21SPEAKER_06: He's also got big playability, averaged nearly 30 yards of catch through the first five games of 2020, and was only a true freshman last season.
- 36:28SPEAKER_06: So Deuce Vaughn is going to be an impact player for Kansas State next year.
- 36:34SPEAKER_04: It's it's wild seeing these little guys come out of nowhere, but that's kind of classic K-State to get the diamonds in a rough.
- 36:39SPEAKER_04: They're really, really good at that.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: I'm jealous.
- 36:41SPEAKER_04: Um, but it's and that's one team I really expect us to beat.
- 36:45SPEAKER_04: So hopefully he's not quite the uh star we're talking about here.
- 36:48SPEAKER_04: Hopefully, Sir Roderick is the better of the tier three.
- 36:51SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 36:52SPEAKER_06: So let's get to TCU's guy, Zach Evans, uh, the other running back I had in tier three, uh, just like Bijan, just like Letty Brown, didn't, or just like Bichon, really.
- 37:03SPEAKER_06: He didn't get a lot of reps early last season.
- 37:05SPEAKER_06: He was he's a younger guy, um, but definitely had a nice coming out party against Baylor, had a massive game against Louisiana Tech, end the season with 130 yards, only seven carries and two touchdowns in the final game of the year.
- 37:18SPEAKER_06: Um, he's a breakout candidate.
- 37:20SPEAKER_06: He's a guy that I could potentially see uh breaking into that tier two, potentially tier one category just because he's so uh the talent is there.
- 37:29SPEAKER_06: He's a five-star guy.
- 37:30SPEAKER_06: He had a kind of a weird recruiting process uh that made him end up at TCU.
- 37:36SPEAKER_06: He was committed to Georgia, had interest from Bama, LSU, AM, Tennessee, Texas Ole Miss, had some misconduct stuff arise and enrolled in TCU kind of out of nowhere.
- 37:48SPEAKER_06: So this guy is talented.
- 37:50SPEAKER_06: Uh the big school is like Georgia Bama wanted him.
- 37:53SPEAKER_06: So uh, you know, he's he's got the talent.
- 37:55SPEAKER_06: It's just if he's got the O-line and the team to really produce like what he should.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: Well, TCU is a a commonly said dark horse this season.
- 38:06SPEAKER_04: Uh, they get called the dark horse a lot, but if it's gonna happen for them, it's it's this this guy's gonna be a huge part of it.
- 38:12SPEAKER_04: They like this team likes to run.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: So whether it's the quarterback or their backs, they like to they like to run.
- 38:18SPEAKER_04: So uh if if they're gonna be successful, I guess he has to be too.
- 38:22SPEAKER_04: So I'm scared you've broken it down like that.
- 38:26SPEAKER_04: I'm scared of the horde frogs like that.
- 38:29SPEAKER_04: But um, wow, uh, at least he's in the tier three with Saragic Thompson.
- 38:35SPEAKER_04: Um, I just hope our boy comes out on top.
- 38:38SPEAKER_06: Yeah, man, he's gotta get healthy and he could very well break and and as well, he could break into that tier two category.
- 38:46SPEAKER_06: Tier one, tier one, baby.
- 38:48SPEAKER_06: He's better than Brees Hall.
- 38:50SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 38:50SPEAKER_06: Oh, we're not saying that on the talking tech pod.
- 38:53SPEAKER_06: But let's go to the guys that are worse than Sir Roderick Thompson, in my in my eyes.
- 39:01SPEAKER_06: Um, tier four, the Oklahoma State tandem.
- 39:04SPEAKER_06: I uh there's no like designated starter yet for Oklahoma State yet.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: It's either gonna be LD Brown, not Letty Brown, LD Brown, or Desmond Jackson, who just selfishly had his coming out party against Texas Tech last season.
- 39:19SPEAKER_04: Rude.
- 39:19SPEAKER_06: Uh rude, very rude.
- 39:21SPEAKER_06: But let's go with LD Brown first.
- 39:23SPEAKER_06: He's looking to be he's looking to be kind of the uh what most people think is gonna be the starting running back for Oklahoma State.
- 39:31SPEAKER_06: It could very well be a running back by committee, like what I think is gonna happen at Texas Tech next season.
- 39:37SPEAKER_06: But LD Brown sharing reps with Chuba Hubbard last year, but still managed to have 200-yard rushing performances.
- 39:45SPEAKER_06: He's using his extra year of COVID eligibility, which means he has plenty of experience.
- 39:50SPEAKER_06: Uh, and then Desmond Jackson on the other end had to mention him because of his uh stupid, unreal performance against Texas Tech last year, going off for 235 yards and three touchdowns last season.
- 40:04SPEAKER_06: Um, he followed that up with a big performance against TCU the following week as well.
- 40:08SPEAKER_06: Uh, these guys could split downs, but uh I I had to put them in tier four because I just don't know who's gonna be the guy.
- 40:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Oklahoma State is an interesting team to talk about because it's just a lot of question marks.
- 40:19SPEAKER_04: Here you are talking about you don't even know who's gonna start as this running back.
- 40:22SPEAKER_04: And also, we don't know what kind of team we're gonna see out of OSU.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: You know, they we have no idea where they're gonna land in the rankings.
- 40:29SPEAKER_04: Usually I have a general idea, usually they're near the top of the pack.
- 40:31SPEAKER_04: But this this year they're really no one really knows what to expect.
- 40:35SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, I we just gotta strike this up as a mystery box until we can see them on the field, I suppose.
- 40:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, they lost a couple huge pieces from their offense last season, so they're gonna have to make that up, uh, make that production up at least.
- 40:47SPEAKER_06: So uh I also had Baylor's running back, Tristan Ebner in worst Tristan.
- 40:52SPEAKER_06: That says a lot.
- 40:54SPEAKER_06: That says a lot talking about the other Tristan that I'm currently talking to right now.
- 40:58SPEAKER_06: Um, but Tristan Ebner could be good.
- 41:01SPEAKER_06: Another one, this is so hard to judge because a lot of these guys could have uh much increased production from last year, but he's really rushing and receiving ability when you look at this guy.
- 41:12SPEAKER_06: Um, and again, not really a knock on any of these guys for being tier four.
- 41:17SPEAKER_06: They could be uh potentially tier two, tier three, who knows next season.
- 41:22SPEAKER_04: We can knock on Baylor, it's cool.
- 41:23SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we can knock on Baylor, that's true, but they have a brand new quarterback coming in.
- 41:27SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, just a new offense in general.
- 41:30SPEAKER_06: So uh watch out for him.
- 41:31SPEAKER_06: He's gonna be the starting guy at Baylor, I believe.
- 41:34SPEAKER_06: And then tier five.
- 41:36SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry, Kansas.
- 41:37SPEAKER_06: You're all you're in tier five again.
- 41:39SPEAKER_06: Uh after after a quarterback episode, they were tier five.
- 41:43SPEAKER_06: They are again tier five in this episode.
- 41:46SPEAKER_06: Um, they have two guys, though, that are much better than their quarterback position right now.
- 41:51SPEAKER_06: Uh Velton Gardner or Daniel Hishaw, High Shaw, whatever it is.
- 41:55SPEAKER_06: Uh, both guys pretty solid.
- 41:57SPEAKER_06: Gardner ended up seventh in the Big 12 last season in rushing yards, only played in six games.
- 42:03SPEAKER_06: So, you know, that's something to look out for if you're Kansas.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: Can we just call this tier tier KU?
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: Tier yikes.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: And and God have mercy on any team that's included in that, too.
- 42:15SPEAKER_04: It's still tier KU.
- 42:17SPEAKER_06: I don't this is actually the position that I'm uh I'm actually okay with Kansas right now.
- 42:21SPEAKER_06: They're not going to be complete, just terrible, in my opinion.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 42:26SPEAKER_06: It's gonna depend on the O-line and how that works out.
- 42:29SPEAKER_06: But uh Kansas again is going to be very bad next season.
- 42:33SPEAKER_06: But the running backs actually have been kind of a bright spot for them in these last few years.
- 42:37SPEAKER_06: So they put together a few good running backs.
- 42:40SPEAKER_06: Um, but these two guys, Velton Gardner and Daniel Highshaw, uh, I guess you know they're they're in tier five.
- 42:47SPEAKER_06: Tier Kansas.
- 42:48SPEAKER_06: Here Kansas.
- 42:50SPEAKER_06: So let's go.
- 42:52SPEAKER_06: Oh man.
- 42:52SPEAKER_06: So that breaks down the Big 12 running backs.
- 42:55SPEAKER_06: Um, again, not a bad thing that Sir Roderick Thompson is in tier three right here.
- 43:00SPEAKER_06: He could potentially be tier one or two, who knows?
- 43:04SPEAKER_06: But there are a lot of good running backs in the Big 12 next season, and that's really the main takeaway from all this.
- 43:11SPEAKER_04: And something to keep in keep in mind is we don't really, really know what this offense is gonna look like.
- 43:17SPEAKER_04: You know, we have a brand new offensive coordinator, and yeah, you can kind of point at TCU, but a lot of people are thinking that this cumby system is gonna be different now that he left Patterson's thumb.
- 43:28SPEAKER_04: So we don't know what what what kind of system we're gonna be seeing, you know, is it gonna be a more passing or is it gonna be balanced, maybe a more run first kind of thing?
- 43:38SPEAKER_04: We just don't know yet.
- 43:39SPEAKER_04: So it'll be exciting to see how Sonny Cumby uses Sir Roderick.
- 43:44SPEAKER_04: I think Sonny is thankfully a brighter guy than David Yost.
- 43:47SPEAKER_04: So I'm sure he knows what he has.
- 43:49SPEAKER_04: So I'm excited to see what he does.
- 43:51SPEAKER_06: Let's hope and pray that Sonny Cumby will be better than David Yost.
- 43:56SPEAKER_06: But yeah, we've said this a few times on the pod in the last few weeks.
- 43:59SPEAKER_06: Matt Well.
- 44:00SPEAKER_06: Wants a balanced offense, he always has.
- 44:02SPEAKER_06: He doesn't want this sling it out 50 times a game style offense.
- 44:06SPEAKER_06: Uh, so having the talent that we do have, not only with Sir Roderick, but with Taj Brooks and with Xavier White, we can put together a really balanced offense going into this season.
- 44:16SPEAKER_06: So uh just look out for him.
- 44:18SPEAKER_06: Stay healthy, Sir Roderick, please.
- 44:19SPEAKER_06: Like throughout the season, man.
- 44:21SPEAKER_06: That's that's been your one downfall.
- 44:24SPEAKER_04: And it's not his fault, unfortunately.
- 44:26SPEAKER_06: No, it's not, it's not uh injuries come and go, it's just it's just a tough thing, but uh stay durable, my man.
- 44:32SPEAKER_06: So let's move on to let's let's move on to everybody's favorite segment, the top five all time of Texas Tech running backs.
- 44:44SPEAKER_06: Tristan, this was almost as hard as the quarterbacks, and kind of in an opposite way, because there's there's so many good running backs that have gone through Texas Tech.
- 44:55SPEAKER_06: I was so surprised to see the amount of great running backs that have gone through this university.
- 45:02SPEAKER_06: I mean, we're known for slinging it out, and that's mainly due to the Michael Each era, but really we have had some awesome, awesome running backs come through this university.
- 45:10SPEAKER_04: No, I'm with you, dude.
- 45:11SPEAKER_04: I had no idea.
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: Whenever I was starting to research this, I'm like, oh my lord, I have so many to go through, so many to cut down.
- 45:17SPEAKER_04: And actually, for me, I thought it made it easier because with the quarterbacks, I kind of had to dig a little more.
- 45:22SPEAKER_04: You know, it's a little harder to judge and compare.
- 45:25SPEAKER_04: But with this, I think it was pretty simple.
- 45:27SPEAKER_04: Um, obviously, once you get to like five and four, it's a little tougher.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: But the top three, I think these are the clear-cut guys, which is awesome.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: So um, it was a lot of fun.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: You know, it's it's really, really cool to look at black and white photos of your favorite team, you know, seeing those old jerseys, seeing these old photos of these superstars.
- 45:44SPEAKER_04: And I've just had a lot of I've had I've been having a ton of fun with this segment, man.
- 45:48SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 45:49SPEAKER_06: So let's go.
- 45:51SPEAKER_06: Number five, Tristan, who is your number five all-time Texas Tech running back.
- 45:56SPEAKER_04: I'm going with James quotation marks Kong.
- 46:01SPEAKER_04: Had no.
- 46:02SPEAKER_04: Is it had not?
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 46:04SPEAKER_04: Okay or had no.
- 46:07SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 46:09SPEAKER_08: But the guy is that what's cool about this?
- 46:11SPEAKER_04: I'm just gonna go ahead and say the guy was a staple from from at Texas Tech until he died, unfortunately, too too early, um, in his Lubbock home.
- 46:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, and uh rest in peace, of course.
- 46:22SPEAKER_04: But the what's really cool about this guy is he started out as a tight end and then he switched to running back.
- 46:28SPEAKER_04: How often do you hear those two positions switch?
- 46:31SPEAKER_04: That doesn't happen.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: Okay, we need a running back.
- 46:35SPEAKER_04: You're gonna go check your tight ends.
- 46:37SPEAKER_04: What?
- 46:39SPEAKER_04: But the it was a good idea that they did because the guy was Southwest Conference offensive player of the year in both 78 and 79.
- 46:48SPEAKER_04: He led the Southwest Conference both years in rushing yards, and not only that, is after that he was a third-round pick in the NFL draft.
- 46:57SPEAKER_04: He went to KC, played in the NFL L NFL for four years.
- 47:02SPEAKER_04: Sorry, y'all, cack out my tongue.
- 47:04SPEAKER_04: Um, and he's in the Texas Tech Hall of Fame, inducted in 2005, seventh all time in Texas Tech rushing.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: But I just, you know, whatever I'm looking at these, what really stands out to me is medals, is national attention, conference attention, not just numbers.
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: So if you're if you're head and shoulders above your competition, I gotta give it to him.
- 47:25SPEAKER_04: I know you're like saying, like, what seventh?
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: And he's in the top five.
- 47:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, whatever you whatever you're whatever your offensive player of the year, two years in a row, leading the conference and rushing yards, I think you deserve a nod.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 47:36SPEAKER_06: That's uh that's a fine opinion to have.
- 47:39SPEAKER_06: I did not have him in my top five.
- 47:41SPEAKER_06: He was in my honorable mentions, but my number five, I had to do it.
- 47:47SPEAKER_06: I'm doing it right now.
- 47:48SPEAKER_06: I'm switching even what is on my notes right now.
- 47:51SPEAKER_06: DeAndre Washington, number five.
- 47:54SPEAKER_06: Let's go.
- 47:55SPEAKER_06: Texas Tech running back all time.
- 47:57SPEAKER_06: Yes, I have this.
- 47:58SPEAKER_06: Is my personal bias getting in the way.
- 48:01SPEAKER_06: Uh, he may not have had the stats that some of these other guys had, but he was our running back.
- 48:06SPEAKER_06: He was the first running back that was at Texas Tech when we showed up in 2014.
- 48:11SPEAKER_06: He was there, of course, from 2011 to 2015, but all Big 12 in 2015.
- 48:16SPEAKER_06: The Big 12 rushing leader in 2015.
- 48:20SPEAKER_06: He was also second team all Big 12 in 2014.
- 48:23SPEAKER_06: A tremendous running back.
- 48:24SPEAKER_06: Dude could do it all.
- 48:25SPEAKER_06: He could catch, he could run, he could bulldoze some dudes.
- 48:29SPEAKER_06: He's a small guy, only about five foot eight, five foot nine, but he's a freaking muscle hamster, man.
- 48:34SPEAKER_06: He could just get everybody out there.
- 48:38SPEAKER_06: Muscle hamster.
- 48:39SPEAKER_06: Muscle hamster.
- 48:40SPEAKER_06: Just like Doug Martin, man.
- 48:41SPEAKER_06: He's he's a tremendous running back, was an awesome player for Texas Tech, uh, currently in the NFL.
- 48:48SPEAKER_06: I believe he's on the Dolphins, had some good years with the Raiders.
- 48:51SPEAKER_06: Um, but DeAndre Washington, he's my number five.
- 48:54SPEAKER_04: Dude, all right, let's keep it going then because he's my number four.
- 48:57SPEAKER_06: Okay, good.
- 48:57SPEAKER_06: I'm glad I'm glad you had him.
- 48:59SPEAKER_04: I had to have a guy that was during my time selfishly.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: And what was kind of funny that stood out to me is this is the second player, and it probably will not be the last of the of a Kingsbury, a Kingsbury era guy.
- 49:12SPEAKER_04: Yep, you know, in the top of all time.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: And what's kind of frustrating about this is we had some absolute historic studs on those teams, but just still couldn't put together good seasons.
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: So again, frustrating, but like you said, you kind of already ran down how he was all team first, uh, Big 12 and in a rushing uh leader, drafted in the fifth round to Oakland, uh, fifth all time in TTU rushing.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: You already went over all that, and I just had to give one of my guys a look.
- 49:40SPEAKER_04: And the guy, he was way better of the of a running back than we deserved in that Cliff Kingsbury system.
- 49:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 49:47SPEAKER_06: So he brought us uh through some really good moments in some in some darker times.
- 49:52SPEAKER_06: So shouts out DeAndre Washington, he's our guy, had to put him on the list.
- 49:56SPEAKER_06: My number four is James Gray, 1986 to 1989, second all-time in rushing yards in Texas Tech history, 20 touchdowns in the 1989 season, including a five touchdown game against Rice, over 4,700 all-purpose yards at Texas Tech.
- 50:14SPEAKER_06: Uh, he's my number four.
- 50:15SPEAKER_06: The stats speak for itself.
- 50:16SPEAKER_06: He was a tremendous running back.
- 50:18SPEAKER_06: Uh, unfortunately, his son committed to Texas.
- 50:21SPEAKER_06: We're not gonna we're not gonna put that against him.
- 50:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, but he was a great running back in the 80s for Texas Tech, had to put him in the top five.
- 50:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, gotta get some old school players in here, man.
- 50:33SPEAKER_04: Always cool hearing about the Moldys setting the pace.
- 50:36SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 50:37SPEAKER_06: Go to your number three.
- 50:38SPEAKER_04: All right, so number three is gonna be one of the Byrons.
- 50:42SPEAKER_04: But this Byron is bam.
- 50:45SPEAKER_04: Okay, good.
- 50:46SPEAKER_04: I had him too.
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Awesome, cool.
- 50:48SPEAKER_04: It sounds like we're gonna be matching out here.
- 50:50SPEAKER_04: Um, so here I have Bam Morris.
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he was a our first Doke Walker Award winner.
- 50:58SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and if for those of y'all that don't know, that means that's the award to the best running back in the nation.
- 51:05SPEAKER_04: The guy was second team All-American in 1993, fourth TTU in rushing, and second in the nation in yards per game in 1993.
- 51:16SPEAKER_04: The dude could move, and it's just it's crazy to see a running back get the best running back award at Texas Tech.
- 51:26SPEAKER_04: So, and he had a he had a prolific NFL career, played seven years in it, even played in the Super Bowl, uh, Steelers versus Cowboys.
- 51:33SPEAKER_04: And dude, shoot, what what more can you say about BAM and putting him at number three?
- 51:38SPEAKER_06: No doubt, man.
- 51:39SPEAKER_06: Third in rushing touchdowns as well.
- 51:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, 22 touchdowns in the 1993 season alone, best in TTU history, most touchdowns in one single season with 22.
- 51:51SPEAKER_06: Uh, just an unbelievable player.
- 51:53SPEAKER_06: Uh, and he's got the nickname to prove it.
- 51:55SPEAKER_06: Bam, baby.
- 51:55SPEAKER_06: I mean, just like bam.
- 51:57SPEAKER_06: Yeah, man.
- 51:58SPEAKER_06: Just an awesome running back to have for Texas Tech.
- 52:01SPEAKER_06: If you haven't, try to find these highlights.
- 52:03SPEAKER_06: We really struggle with finding some highlights from all these guys, uh, especially like 80s, 90s era type of stuff.
- 52:10SPEAKER_06: But like you did mention, Super Bowl guy drafted third round by the Steelers, played in that Super Bowl against the Cowboys.
- 52:16SPEAKER_06: A lot of Texas Tech fans will be happy to know that the Dallas Cowboys did end up winning that Super Bowl.
- 52:21SPEAKER_06: Uh, but bam, unbelievable running back.
- 52:24SPEAKER_06: Dokke Walker, a winner, like you mentioned.
- 52:25SPEAKER_06: Uh, great, great for third all-time in Texas Tech running back history.
- 52:30SPEAKER_04: It's cool with these top three running backs, is these guys have way more medals than the quarterbacks did.
- 52:36SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 52:36SPEAKER_04: And and and just saying that out loud about Texas Tech football is just weird coming from our era of college football.
- 52:44SPEAKER_04: So let's keep moving on here.
- 52:46SPEAKER_04: So on to number six.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: Let's see if we're still on the same page here, Steven.
- 52:51SPEAKER_04: I'm on Byron Hanspurn.
- 52:53SPEAKER_04: Number six.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: Oh, did I say number six?
- 52:56SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry.
- 52:57SPEAKER_04: I'm like, so sorry.
- 52:58SPEAKER_04: I was probably getting like mixed stat.
- 53:00SPEAKER_04: You're going all over the place, man.
- 53:02SPEAKER_04: I'm so sorry, man.
- 53:03SPEAKER_04: I'm in number two.
- 53:04SPEAKER_04: Byron Hansburn.
- 53:06SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 53:07SPEAKER_04: So we're talking about Texas Tech's number one rushing leader.
- 53:11SPEAKER_04: He was all American in '96.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: Dok winner again in 96.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: That is three years apart that Texas Tech got an award for the best running back in America.
- 53:21SPEAKER_04: What?
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: What?
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: What?
- 53:27SPEAKER_04: And um, our our birth year was special for this running back.
- 53:30SPEAKER_04: Um, first team all Big 12 in 96 as well.
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: Finished sixth in Heisman voting.
- 53:35SPEAKER_04: Awesome, man.
- 53:36SPEAKER_04: And uh he was a second round pick in the NFL draft um by the Atlanta Falcons.
- 53:41SPEAKER_04: So that's the guy.
- 53:43SPEAKER_04: I mean, how can he not put the number one leader in it?
- 53:46SPEAKER_04: And with his his career, his medals, the dude deserves number two.
- 53:50SPEAKER_06: By the way, all-time rushing leader in just three seasons at Texas Tech, didn't even play all four.
- 53:56SPEAKER_06: So uh great player, uh unbelievable.
- 54:00SPEAKER_06: That 1996 season was remarkable in all aspects.
- 54:05SPEAKER_06: A 2,000 yard season for Byron Hansburg in that 1996 season.
- 54:10SPEAKER_06: You know how many players have had 2,000 yards in a collegiate season?
- 54:14SPEAKER_06: No.
- 54:15SPEAKER_06: 26.
- 54:16SPEAKER_06: That's it.
- 54:17SPEAKER_06: All-time.
- 54:18SPEAKER_06: 26 players have ever rushed for 2,000 yards in a collegiate season.
- 54:23SPEAKER_06: Just to name some others on that list: Barry Sanders, Derrick Henry, Ladanian Tomlinson, Tony Dorsett, Christian McCaffrey, Marcus Allen, and so many other all-time greats.
- 54:34SPEAKER_06: Unfortunately, Byron did not have the professional career that a lot of these other guys had.
- 54:39SPEAKER_06: But for a guy to rush for 2,000 yards in a collegiate season is just simply unbelievable.
- 54:45SPEAKER_06: Uh, that puts him in number two.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: So we match there too, as well, huh?
- 54:50SPEAKER_06: Yeah, absolutely.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: What okay, what what are the chances Texas Tech gets two dope awards in the 90s and they have the same name?
- 54:59SPEAKER_06: I it's it's crazy.
- 55:00SPEAKER_06: And and really, I'll say this when making this list, I had Byron Hansberg number one, but I just could not put him at number one after looking into more research for this next guy that we both have at number one.
- 55:14SPEAKER_06: And really, like you said, it's the honors and the medals and everything like that that puts this guy number one.
- 55:21SPEAKER_06: It's so hard to compare generations with this kind of stuff because it's such a different style of football from the 60s to the even the 90s and the and from now, it's just insane.
- 55:32SPEAKER_06: So go go ahead with the number one running back all time in Texas Tech history.
- 55:36SPEAKER_04: You're giving me this honor, huh?
- 55:38SPEAKER_06: I'm doing it.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: All right, man.
- 55:40SPEAKER_04: Well, speaking of honor, I'm number one is Ring of Honor, Donnie Anderson.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: Man, however, I was looking through this guy, looking through his research before I start breaking down his stats.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: I started thinking to myself, is this the most decorated player we've ever had?
- 55:59SPEAKER_04: And he absolutely is.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: Translates to the best college player we've ever had.
- 56:05SPEAKER_04: You know, it's just it's it's insane.
- 56:07SPEAKER_04: Um, so we're talking about a guy three-time all Southwest, two-time all American, fourth in Heisman votes.
- 56:16SPEAKER_04: The guy was a running back, he could receive, he could return, and he could even punt.
- 56:23SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: The guy did it all.
- 56:27SPEAKER_04: And not only that, is he was a first round pick in the NFL, the AFL, and at the time had the biggest contract in NFL history.
- 56:38SPEAKER_04: And on Green Bay, he both punted and continued his receiving position.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: So the guy was once more doing it all in the NFL.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: The guy won the first and second ever Super Bowls with Green Bay and was a pro bowler himself.
- 56:57SPEAKER_04: The guy's in the College Football Hall of Fame, the second player we've ever had do so.
- 57:02SPEAKER_04: And this guy's this guy's decorated like a war hero in college football.
- 57:07SPEAKER_06: I know another guy who also has the most, uh, the biggest contract in NFL history at the time, uh, by the name of Patrick Mahomes.
- 57:15SPEAKER_06: So him and Donnie Anderson, we now have two guys that have the biggest contract in NFL history at their time that they signed.
- 57:24SPEAKER_06: Um, you said it all with him, super decorated, uh, unbelievable player, 1965, fourth in Heisman, uh, fourth in the Heisman race.
- 57:34SPEAKER_06: Uh, just uh just an incredible player, one of only, I think, six guys now in the Texas Tech Ring of Honor.
- 57:41SPEAKER_06: Uh, he's he's just unbelievable.
- 57:43SPEAKER_06: And I'm I'm surprised you didn't mention this during your research.
- 57:46SPEAKER_06: He had possibly the greatest nickname of all time at in anything, the golden palomino, known as Donnie Anderson.
- 57:56SPEAKER_06: I'm surprised that you didn't see that.
- 57:58SPEAKER_06: That is an incredible, incredible nickname.
- 58:01SPEAKER_04: That is the single greatest Texas Tech nickname I have ever heard in my life.
- 58:07SPEAKER_04: That is phenomenal, man.
- 58:10SPEAKER_04: Dude, this this Donnie guy like really set the table for all the other running backs following him because obviously no one has is has matched his medal count, even though he was only 10th in all time rushing at Texas Tech, uh still an incredible feat, obviously.
- 58:26SPEAKER_04: But like I said, he's just got walls and walls of trophies and awards, and I don't know if I mentioned, but he was also the national player of the year, according to sporting news, I'm sure a publication back then in 1965.
- 58:38SPEAKER_04: So wow, that like I he's arguably the best player we've ever had.
- 58:45SPEAKER_06: He's got his name up in Jones ATT Stadium.
- 58:47SPEAKER_06: That says it all, man.
- 58:48SPEAKER_06: I mean, I and he was uh he was incredible.
- 58:52SPEAKER_06: And at the time, this the stats are gonna be kind of a lie right here because it was such a different game in the 60s than what it is now.
- 59:00SPEAKER_06: But uh Donnie Anderson had to be number one on both of our lists.
- 59:05SPEAKER_04: No, no arguments.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: I'm glad we got it there.
- 59:08SPEAKER_04: And what's can we just talk about real quick how cool of an introduction the Ring of Honor was?
- 59:14SPEAKER_04: Because while we do have our athletic hall of fame, which he's obviously in, um, the Ring of Honor is a insanely exclusive club.
- 59:25SPEAKER_04: I and I love that.
- 59:27SPEAKER_04: You know, we're not just throwing anybody up there, it's it's it's a really, really special thing.
- 59:31SPEAKER_04: And to prove how special it is, you know, Michael Crabtree's the last guy to go up there.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so that if if Michael Crabtree is is one of the few, it kind of shows what kind of exclusivity we're looking for.
- 59:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 59:45SPEAKER_06: The hall of fame should be exclusive, it should be very few people.
- 59:48SPEAKER_06: So many hall of fames just include a lot of people, and if they were good for a time, you know, the all these guys deserved it.
- 59:56SPEAKER_06: And to have that ring of honor, I think it was introduced in 2014.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_06: Uh, having those initial uh guys from the very beginnings of Texas Tech Football, it's super incredible to have their names up there, and it really is a cool deal.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_06: Uh, but let's let's mention some honorable mentions.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_06: Um, I had a few for running backs.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_06: It was hard to keep a lot of these guys off the list initially at number five before I changed my mind just uh several minutes ago.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_06: Uh Ricky A.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_06: Williams, not Ricky Williams from Texas, Ricky A.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_06: Williams from 1998 to 2001, third all time in rushing yards at Texas Tech, fourth in rushing touchdowns.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_06: Had to mention him.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_06: Uh, it was tough between him and DeAndre, but my personal bias had to come in with DeAndre.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_04: No, that's that's fair, man.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_04: That's also like it's like DeAndre in the top five is obviously going to maybe you know push it for some people, but he was our guy.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_06: So he he deserved to be in there.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_06: He was our guy for sure.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_06: Let's mention a couple more.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_06: Torian Henderson, 2002 to 2005 at Texas Tech, mostly a receiving back.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_06: This was a Mike Leach offense.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_06: This was pass the ball a ton, don't run the ball a ton.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_06: Uh, so he caught a lot.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_06: He's actually the leader in career receptions at Texas Tech as a running back.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_06: So really had to mention him.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_06: It was kind of tough to put to keep him off this list because he's such, I mean, he was such an impact player those years for Texas Tech.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, that's it's it's funny how his stats are built like that, showing just the weird orthodox system that was Mike Leach air raid at Texas Tech.
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: So fun pick.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: It's just like a fun injured uh inclusion there.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_06: And I had a couple more just to include, I'm not gonna say much about them, but uh Larry Isaac and Barron Batch.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_06: Barron Bash, of course, the running back during the 2000s era, some of the best time for Texas Tech football.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_06: So uh just want to include those guys.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_06: James had not as well.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_06: You included him in your top five.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_06: He was in my honorable mentions.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_04: Not a bad list, man.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: This this running back was way more this running back list was way more fun than I thought it was gonna be.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_04: Um, I thought it was gonna be pretty tough just just because of our you know, modern bias.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_04: I just did not know that our history was so deep, especially whenever I'm looking at the golden palomino.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_04: I was awestruck.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_04: I was like, this man was incredible.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_04: And you know, I I just I didn't expect that out of a running back from Texas Tech.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_04: It was just incredible.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_06: Yeah, really cool list.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_06: Y'all go do your research and check out some former Texas Tech running backs, they were really good uh in the past.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_06: So we will give you the wide receivers slash tight end.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_06: We're gonna make that one episode next week.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, that's gonna be a tough list as well.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_06: Yeah, we've had we've had a lot of good receivers come through this university.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_06: So uh check out that next week for for another top five Texas Tech all timers.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's see uh Sir Roderick Thompson break into this.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: You know, we're gonna see this every week.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_06: Please, please, Sir Roderick Tyler Shuck.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_06: Y'all are gonna make your way in after we go undefeated and win the national championship this season.
- 1:02:56SPEAKER_04: Book it.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_06: Don't book it, please.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_06: Don't book it, please.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_06: But hopefully we will have a good season.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_06: So let's move on.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_06: Final couple quick fire questions just to have a little conversation flowing to end the pod, a little fun talk going on.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_06: Tristan, what's your first question?
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_04: Well, you know, my questions tingle the brain.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_04: You know, I I gotta I gotta dissect a bit.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_04: I gotta see what you gotta say because this is this is a good question.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_04: So I hope your brain is ready.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_04: It is in general, whenever you look at Texas Tech Football as a whole program, what are your general expectations for wins and losses season to season?
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_04: Like you're looking at it from a scope.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_04: Like, what do you expect generally?
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_06: Generally.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_04: Do you want me to start this and you kind of feed off it?
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_04: So as a Texas Tech fan, I expect to go bowling every single year to start.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_04: I think six wins should be the floor.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_04: That should be the expectation of the floor.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_04: But generally, I think we should be a six to nine win team year to year.
- 1:04:08SPEAKER_04: But every four or five years, I want us to be a real threat to the Big 12 championship.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_04: You get what I'm saying now?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: Like what like what you expect out of the Texas Tech football fan experience.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_04: I expect to go bowling every year, and I expect to see six to nine wins, six being on the lower end and nine being on the higher end, of course.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_06: This is this is a hard question because the last 10 years have been such a smudge in Texas Tech football history.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_06: And so, you know, it's I think it's different fan by fan.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_06: If you saw the golden moments of Texas Tech football, of course, you're gonna want to expect at least something like that every single year.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_06: We're not expecting the 2008 season every single year, right?
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_06: But when you were a part of that and when you when you saw what this program can actually put out on the football field, you do start to have that expectation of like what you said, at least six to nine wins.
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna agree with you on that.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_04: But no, no, I the but everyone agrees that the 2008 system, 2008 year was special, yeah, and that's what I'm saying.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_04: Like, I want that special year every four to five years because I know we are never going to be a perennial perennial Big 12 contender.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_04: That's just unfortunately, eight teams in this conference just can't be.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_04: So I I'm what I'm saying is I expect us to be that every four or five years.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_04: But outside of that, if we're not going bowling, that is just like pretty much unacceptable.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_04: You know, we obviously we have to claw back to being that, but once we're there, it should never fall below that floor because I think historically we're too good of a program to be seen that way, to be acting that way.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_04: So I do expect at least six wins.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_04: And not to nine wins pretty much every season.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_06: Yeah, and I I think I think this expectations change as your fandom goes on.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_06: That's true.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_06: Uh, you know, like basketball.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_06: I was just about to say that.
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_06: Look at basketball.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_06: We didn't expect anything in 2014.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_06: We didn't, we expected, you know, maybe every once in a while we'll have a pretty decent season and you know, may possibly, possibly make the NCAA tournament.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_06: Now we're expecting to make the NCAA tournament every single year.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_06: And that comes from years of success.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_06: So football has had years of uh not so success.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_06: So um right now I want to make a bowl game.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_06: That's all I want right now.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_06: And that those are my expectations for Texas Tech.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_06: Um, we'll see where it goes from there.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_06: Right now, six wins and a bowl win.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_06: I'm happy.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_04: Oh, me too.
- 1:06:51SPEAKER_04: And but that also falls into what I'm satisfied with.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_04: So to the year-to-year.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_04: So that's just that's just what I meant.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_04: You know, I was just asking what your general expectations were from the foot for the football program.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_04: And um, and obviously, like you said, you know, fan experience has kind of changed that level.
- 1:07:08SPEAKER_04: And so I kind of I guess we could kind of look at making the NCAA tournament kind of like making a bowl game, even though it's better than that.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, we better be making the bowl game every year, but I'm not expecting the basketball team to be winning the Big 12 championship or to be making the elite eight elite eight every single year.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_04: It's just unreasonable for Texas Tech.
- 1:07:26SPEAKER_04: So I I what do you what do you think?
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_06: I think I think I actually do, I don't I don't know about Elite Eight or whatever, but I do expect every single year to be a competitor in the Big 12 for basketball, but that wasn't your question.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_06: Your question's football.
- 1:07:40SPEAKER_06: Yeah, uh, I expect six wins and a bowl win.
- 1:07:43SPEAKER_06: That's what I expect right now.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_04: All right, so this year, yeah.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_06: Yes, this year.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, this year I do see something between five and eight wins.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_06: And I do.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_06: I I'm honestly I'm I'm a little too high on this team because I feel like I'm just gonna get disappointed.
- 1:07:58SPEAKER_06: I think a lot of people are high on this team that are very, very scared of being uh positive about this program and and what we're about to put on the field this coming season.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_06: But I will be disappointed if we do not make a bow.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_06: I like and my disappointment will be immeasurable, even more so than the last couple of years.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_04: This team is too talented not to do it, and it kind of comes to the whole if Matt Wells can't do this team, we really don't know what to expect going forward with him.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_04: So yeah, exactly.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_04: I do know what to expect, actually.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_04: But yeah, oh god, let's not get into that.
- 1:08:31SPEAKER_04: Positive thoughts, yes, sir.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_04: Yes, sir.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_04: That was that was a more existential question.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_04: I just thought it was kind of interesting, like what you kind of gauge the the win-loss total at right now.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_04: Um, so what's your sure?
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_06: Okay, I have two questions.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_06: So I didn't I didn't go with the full three, I just have two.
- 1:08:46SPEAKER_06: Um, first one teams you kind of root for in every power conference.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_06: So every single power conference, who is the team that you're like, yeah, you know, go them.
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_04: I'm a huge underdog guy.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_04: Okay, uh so like let's start like in the pac-12, Oregon State.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_04: I like the beaver.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_05: I had I had the exact same team.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_05: No way, yeah.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_06: I had the exact same team.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_06: I I love the beaver mascot, first and forward.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_06: Like that is an awesome, awesome mascot.
- 1:09:15SPEAKER_06: But yeah, like you said, they don't win a lot, you know.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_06: I I I go beebs, man.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_06: You know, just go beebs.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_04: I like I like teams that kind of reflect Texas Tech.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_04: You know, they're not the most popular team in the state, they're often overlooked, you know, but they they still got some spunk.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_04: But and also like if they're Washington State in that mix, too.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_04: That's that's kind of what I'm looking for.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_04: Um, all right, and let's move on.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_04: The Big Ten, dude.
- 1:09:40SPEAKER_04: You know, I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna go with my uncle Joey.
- 1:09:43SPEAKER_04: Let's go butkers.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_04: But there.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_04: So my my uncle went there.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_04: It's really the only connection I had to the Big Ten.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_06: So I'll go butkers right on.
- 1:09:53SPEAKER_06: Uh I know I might get some beef for this from the people listening.
- 1:09:58SPEAKER_06: I kind of root for Michigan State.
- 1:10:01SPEAKER_06: I kind of say Ohio State.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_06: No, no, no, no.
- 1:10:03SPEAKER_06: Corey.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_06: Yeah, no, not not for sorry, sorry, Corey, if you're listening, but uh no, I'm not I'm not rooting for Ohio State in a lot of scenarios.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_06: But um Michigan State, uh kind of a uh weird personal.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_06: We were the Spartans growing up as a kid.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_06: That was our that was our AAU team.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_06: We were green, uh, you know, it's just like a weird personal kind of thing that I'm just like, yeah, go Spartans.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_06: I don't know.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_06: That's just uh but like you said, I don't have a real connection to the any of the Big Ten team, so that's kind of like I guess who I root for in the Big Ten, you know.
- 1:10:39SPEAKER_04: All right then.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_04: Um, so let's let's move it on.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_04: Let's uh let's go ACC.
- 1:10:45SPEAKER_04: This gets even harder.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_06: You want me to give you mine?
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_06: NC State.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_06: Oh, there you go.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_06: Okay, NC State's a good one.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 1:10:54SPEAKER_06: Right on.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_06: My ACC team.
- 1:10:57SPEAKER_06: Wake is great.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_06: Okay, good one.
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_06: Good one.
- 1:11:00SPEAKER_06: Wake I don't like to go for the private schools.
- 1:11:02SPEAKER_06: I know, that's the only downfall.
- 1:11:04SPEAKER_06: The greatest athlete of all time, Tim Duncan, went to Wake Forest.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_06: Uh, and then and and Wake is great, they always get overlooked because they don't put a good team ever.
- 1:11:13SPEAKER_06: Uh, so I root for Wake.
- 1:11:15SPEAKER_06: Whatever they're playing, go Demon Deks.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_06: Yeah, yeah, that's go Deks.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_04: Uh I'm with you though.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_04: The Wolfpack, you know, they're they're not, you know, they're they're kind of like the Texas Tech in North Carolina, you know, overlooked.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_04: They got the red and black and estate's cool, you know.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_06: Yep.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_06: Okay, everyone's favorite, SEC.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_04: SEC.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_04: That one, that one's tough.
- 1:11:36SPEAKER_04: Um, because I don't like to cheer for any of them.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_04: Um, but I honestly I had a really great time running around with my buddy Logan in in the Southeast when I lived there, uh, South Carolina.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:11:47SPEAKER_06: Game Cox.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_06: That's a good one.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_06: That's a good one for sure.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_06: Uh down in South Carolina.
- 1:11:52SPEAKER_06: I'm sure they have a rowdy fan base, you know, they're fun, like Texas Tech.
- 1:11:56SPEAKER_06: They have a great mascot.
- 1:11:58SPEAKER_06: They got some red and black in their colors, you know.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_06: Shouts out to the Game Cox.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_06: Uh, another unpopular one.
- 1:12:05SPEAKER_06: Dude, come on.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_06: I do.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_06: I root, I I of the SEC teams, I root for LSU.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_06: Um, I'm down here.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_04: It's like almost like saying Alabama.
- 1:12:16SPEAKER_06: It's not, it's not.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_06: No, it's not.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_06: After you, the these people they have high expectations, but they're not so high that they're annoying, you know.
- 1:12:28SPEAKER_06: Like some of them, yes, of course, they're gonna be a little annoying.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_06: Uh, I and this is another biased pick.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_06: I am in Baton Rouge.
- 1:12:36SPEAKER_06: My girlfriend went to LSU law school.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_06: I have experienced the fan base down here.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_06: This is one of the greatest college football game day atmospheres that I've seen ever.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_06: Everybody's nice, even if you're you know, uh a fan of the opposing team.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_06: They like the party, it's a good time.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_06: I root for the tigers.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_06: Sorry.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_04: Marry them already then.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_04: Golly, dude.
- 1:12:57SPEAKER_04: Leave us then.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_06: Get out of here.
- 1:12:58SPEAKER_06: No, no.
- 1:13:00SPEAKER_06: It's we're talking specifically of SEC.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_06: If I see an SEC versus SEC matchup and LSU's involved, I'm probably gonna root for LSU.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean they have they have it really hard there.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_04: God, eight win season, darn.
- 1:13:12SPEAKER_06: Oh hey, they won as many games, they won as many games as we did last year.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_04: That's so we are the same.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just just just one little funny story.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_04: Like my my my my girlfriend Annie grew up an LSU fan, and I still hold it over her head.
- 1:13:26SPEAKER_04: They were there, it was a ranked matchup between LSU and Alabama, and LSU like barely lost.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_04: It was a really boring game.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_04: It was like 15 to 10.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_04: That's about it.
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_04: And um, it she'll whatever they lost, she was like, it's so hard being an LLCU fan.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_04: I was like, I cannot take this right now.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_04: This was during the the this was in the middle of the Kingsbury Texas Tech football time, and I was just like, I'm I'm about to leave you.
- 1:13:52SPEAKER_04: And and she wasn't, she went to Texas Tech.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_04: Like, obviously, she still pulled for him because her family, and it's like, Annie, you're at Texas Tech, and you're saying this right now.
- 1:14:02SPEAKER_04: Their LSU has won like nine games just this season.
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_04: I was like, just we had like four wins.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_06: Uh just I was so mad.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_06: Oh man, yeah, I knew that was gonna grind some gears uh with that choice, but move on, Tristan.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_06: Go ahead.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_06: What's your next one?
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_04: You know, I every week I was gonna do this the aby and pass, the Big 12, this week.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_04: We're heading to the Midwest.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_04: We're staying in the American, but we're in the Midwest.
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_04: We're heading to Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_04: And I'm not talking about Xavier, I'm talking about the University of Cincinnati.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_06: Because Xavier is the first school I thought of when you mentioned Cincinnati.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_06: That's why I clarified.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_05: What do you what are you what are you are you buying or sell or passing on Sincy, the bear cats?
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_06: Cincy, come on down.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_06: That's all I'm saying.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_06: Okay, another another reason like what you mentioned with UCF last week.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_06: You get Ohio, you get the big recruiting bed that is Ohio.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_06: They not only have put out a great team the last couple years, but they are in a solid location, despite what our buddy Corey would say uh about Cincinnati, Ohio.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_06: But they're just they would be such a good ad.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_06: And again, we're the Big 12.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_06: We have reached out to West Virginia, we are in Iowa.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_06: Why not make it Ohio too?
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_04: Okay, and and what's kind of interesting about Ohio is it has one power five program.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_04: And you'll kind of notice the uh the trend that a lot of a lot of states that have one Power Five school like Louisiana, that team kind of dominates.
- 1:15:50SPEAKER_04: They get to hog all the recruits, they get all the fandom.
- 1:15:54SPEAKER_04: So what's kind of interesting about Cincinnati is you kind of inject an instant competitor, you know.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_04: Obviously, Cincinnati's already been a competitor.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_04: They're they're they're ranked like all year last season and the year before that.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_04: But they've been really, really solid.
- 1:16:07SPEAKER_04: So it's an interesting mix-up.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_04: Like you said, you're into a new market, you get new recruits.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's a big school, uh, it's a good school, and but they're kind of lower on my list.
- 1:16:20SPEAKER_04: City schools don't seem that sexy to me, you know, they're not that glittery, you know.
- 1:16:27SPEAKER_04: And and I know that.
- 1:16:28SPEAKER_04: Is it just the name?
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_04: A lot of it has to do with the name, but here you're in Cincinnati, Ohio, and guess what city you share that that that city with?
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_04: I mean, guess what team you share that city with?
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_04: The Bengals.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_04: You're sharing it with an NFL team.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_04: And is that really what the kind of situation you want to put the Big 12 in is competing with an NFL team?
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_04: Because obviously it's not gonna happen.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_04: And and two, it's just doesn't have that college-centric feeling that you'd get more so uh even out of UCF.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_04: I think UCF's a much better choice.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_06: This was my argument again last last week with UCF.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_06: Yes, they have the Orlando Magic there.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_06: Yes, the Cincinnati Bengals are there.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_06: The Cincinnati Bengals do not bring the draw that a Dallas Cowboy or a New England Patriot or anything like that.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_06: The Cincinnati Bengals are probably lower on the list, probably in the top five or bottom five of NFL revenue, you know, or just fandom support, whatever you want to measure.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_06: Um, I don't think that should exclude the University of Cincinnati just because they have a professional franchise in their city.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_04: I just think it kind of plays into it.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_04: Um, and how much of a destination would Cincinnati be for uh visiting fans?
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_04: You know, how many how many fans can make it over there is also obviously another argument.
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_04: Um, but I'm soft buying them.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_04: I think they're a little lower on my list, but I would not be mad if so for whatever reason we expanded and got UCF and Cincinnati.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_04: Because what's kind of cool about Cincinnati is it gives uh, like you kind of touched on this, West Virginia and Iowa State a bit of a middle ground to go see, go play, um, and add a little bit in the mix in there.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_04: So uh I'm soft buying them.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna buy them.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_06: I'm gonna I'm not gonna hard buy them, but I'm gonna just buy them.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_06: Um, you know, go Cincy, come on down.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_06: Come on, bear cats, join the squad.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_06: Come on down, come on down.
- 1:18:25SPEAKER_06: My final question.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_06: Uh, it's a real it's a real brain teaser.
- 1:18:30SPEAKER_06: Has TikTok ruined America?
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_05: Easy answer, yes.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_06: Yes.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_06: If anybody has seen that horrible, horrible Kansas State football TikTok, uh, where uh a couple K-State players are basically just like lip-syncing uh Justin Bieber.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_06: Um what what what is wrong?
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_06: What is wrong with the youth?
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_06: And I we're 24 and 25, man.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_06: Like we're not that far removed from this kind of stuff.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_06: It's so cringy.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_06: Who puts who puts that out and says that's a good video?
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_04: And the sad thing is there's plenty of people our age and older that are into it.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so it it's it really is weird because back when I was a teenager, I would melt if I saw any sort of video of me.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_04: Like I don't want that anywhere near the internet, you know.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_04: I'm thankful that social media didn't really really take off until a bit of our later into like high school.
- 1:19:35SPEAKER_04: So where you're not absolutely dumb dumb, you know.
- 1:19:39SPEAKER_06: I'd understand this Kansas State video if you are 13 years old.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah, this man is going to be a Kansas State football player.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_06: Yes, he's probably still 18, 19.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_06: He has some crapping on a guy who's 18, 19, whatever.
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_06: Everybody makes mistakes at 18 or 19.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_06: But my god, dude, you are lip-syncing a Justin Bieber video, and there's nothing to it.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_06: All you're doing is like smiling and doing some weird like shoulder stuff.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_04: It was, I it made me so upset.
- 1:20:15SPEAKER_04: And all the players are trying to smolder and stuff like that, just like look, like look hot and stuff.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_04: I'm like, dude, this is not it.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_04: This is all all I can say about this is I hope we utterly plow K-State.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_04: I every single team is so mad right now.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_04: That is on in every locker room in the Big 12.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_06: I want him, I want, I want Kansas State to get absolutely smacked in every game they play because lose to Kansas.
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_04: Like that's that is unacceptable.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_04: And because in and the Wildcats have no reason to ever make anyone mad, but they just lit the Big 12 on fire.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_04: Everyone hates them now.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_06: That was awful.
- 1:20:51SPEAKER_06: And I know that's there's some good TikTok out there, you know.
- 1:20:55SPEAKER_06: There's there's very little, very little, but there are some good videos out there.
- 1:21:00SPEAKER_06: This is the majority, unfortunately, of what pops out on TikTok.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_06: And I think it's ruining America.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_06: And I think that's the simple, I think that's simply what what we what we what the thing is.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_04: Well, the whole world is going down with us then.
- 1:21:14SPEAKER_06: So that that is uh I think I think we're just getting older.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_06: I think that's actually it.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_06: For sure.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_06: I hate it.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_06: I hate TikTok.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_05: We're too young to be saying that, but yeah.
- 1:21:24SPEAKER_06: Except, except if you want to follow the Guns Up Nation TikTok, go do it.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_06: Oh, yes, yes.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_04: That was probably a bad setup for that statement.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_06: That's that's the only good TikTok account out there.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_06: Guns Up Nation, baby.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_06: Shouts out to y'all.
- 1:21:39SPEAKER_04: All right.
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_04: Well, you ruined my evening.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_04: So can we finish this up?
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_05: Let's do it.
- 1:21:46SPEAKER_05: Song of the week.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_05: We have another theme.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what is the theme for this song of the week?
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_04: The song of the week is obviously showing off the 4th of July.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_04: We're juicing this up with some patriotism, some stars and stripes, baby.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_04: We gotta what else are you gonna do on the 4th of July week?
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_04: Uh eat hot dogs.
- 1:22:04SPEAKER_04: Oh, that too.
- 1:22:06SPEAKER_06: You could do that.
- 1:22:07SPEAKER_06: But yes, we are doing a 4th of July America song of the week.
- 1:22:12SPEAKER_06: Tristan, what is your patriotic song of the week?
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_04: I decided to forego the easy answers, the Toby Keith's, the Lee Greenwoods.
- 1:22:21SPEAKER_04: Great choices, obviously.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_04: But I'm going with a little more, you know, serious side.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_04: I'm going with one that just like, you know, is it's a great look at America today.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_04: And you know how how you know the faces on the screen don't define us.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_04: It's the people going to work every day, and the people in our lives that do.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_04: So that's that's what makes America.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_04: So I'm going with American Soul, Aaron Watson.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_04: Haven't done him yet.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_04: It's off the latest album.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_04: Uh, it's just a great reminder, you know, to be grateful for the people in your life and the people that keep this country going, not what's going on on your TV, not what's going on on social media.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_07: It's the hustle, live by some blood, sweat, and tears above the backbone, the American goal.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_06: Very nice, man.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_06: Very sincere on that song of the week.
- 1:23:10SPEAKER_06: I am gonna do a song of the week that is also pretty sincere.
- 1:23:15SPEAKER_06: Um, it is Song of the Patriot by Johnny Cash, featuring Marty Robbins, just a classic of all classics, Johnny Cash and Marty Robbins, of course, two icons of music.
- 1:23:27SPEAKER_06: Um, and it's it's just the song is so great, man.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_06: It's you know, Johnny Cash doesn't really sing a lot in a lot of his songs, but he tells stories, and this story is a great one, talking about patriotism, talking about America, talking about the country that we live in.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_06: That is so great, and we are so blessed to be here.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_06: So uh that is my song of the week, Song of the Patriot, Johnny Cash, featuring Marty Robbins.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_04: Talking Tech Uniting America.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_04: And what a surprise that we both picked country music for 4th of July song.
- 1:24:09SPEAKER_04: I mean, what is what else should you choose?
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_06: I thought about American Woman by Lenny Kravitz, but I didn't do it.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_04: That one's a little vague.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_04: A little vague, yeah.
- 1:24:21SPEAKER_04: Just like the description of American Woman.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_04: But but uh great picks, man.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm excited to see these hit the airwaves and uh God bless America at the end of the day.
- 1:24:31SPEAKER_04: And everyone, get out there, grill your hot eggs, turn off the BS, and enjoy it.
- 1:24:38SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_06: So let's finish off off season number two with a couple plugs, like we do at the end of every episode.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_06: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_06: Tristan is at Tristy Mick.
- 1:24:49SPEAKER_06: I am at L underscore S underscore Rodriguez.

- 1:25:11SPEAKER_06: So we're gonna end it off like always.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_06: Always Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_02: Wreck'em Tech.
- 1:25:16SPEAKER_02: Uh wow.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_02: First of all, uh got a lot of respect for Steven and Tristan.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_02: Uh their program, tough guys, just uh a lot of fun.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_00: I love the game of basketball, but I also love West Texas, and I love Stephen and Tristan.
- 1:25:31SPEAKER_00: So I'm extremely proud.
- 1:25:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I don't know where we go from here.
- 1:25:34SPEAKER_00: I'm I'm thinking I'm just gonna sit back down.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_00: It's just not getting better than this.
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_01: I just want to tell Steven and Tristan, thanks for coming out.
- 1:25:42SPEAKER_03: The energy uh was really, really good in there today.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_03: Uh we fed off of it.
- 1:25:46SPEAKER_03: I think it goes back and forth tremendous.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_03: Uh great job, and um, you know, just just proud of our guys for the way they responded.
