- 2:19Speaker 5: Room, sit ons phone.
- 2:21Speaker 6: Yeah right there. You guys start pretty early in the morning,
- 2:25Speaker 6: don't you. Yeah, once while you got a cigarette?
- 2:27Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, thanks.
- 2:29Speaker 6: I never feel like I'm alive. I never got a
- 2:31Speaker 6: cigarette in the morning. I'm about a machine here, I mean,
- 2:40Speaker 6: like it that first cigarette? All right? What's this all about?
- 2:44Speaker 5: You know that? As well as we do a few questions,
- 2:45Speaker 5: we want to ask, go ahead, ask what's your apartment setup?
- 2:48Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about?
- 2:49Speaker 5: Now, it will work slowly. Got the whole story from
- 2:51Speaker 5: summer soon?
- 2:51Speaker 6: What do you need from me?
- 2:52Speaker 5: It just like to check out a few things.
- 2:53Speaker 6: What do you mean you got the whole story from summers?
- 2:55Speaker 7: What did he say, teld us everything he knows about
- 2:57Speaker 7: the setup and what he says.
- 2:58Speaker 5: You're the key man. Everything goes through you.
- 3:00Speaker 6: Then, yeah, you believe him, got no reason not to.
- 3:02Speaker 5: That's why we're here. Get your side of the story.
- 3:06Speaker 5: How much you tell you said everything he knows?
- 3:09Speaker 6: Yeah? Yeah, that figures.
- 3:11Speaker 5: You get a guy with.
- 3:11Speaker 6: Agen like that, and as soon as the roof starts
- 3:13Speaker 6: to drop, they spill their insides out. That's the trouble
- 3:15Speaker 6: with doing business with Hypes. You always run into me.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Yeah, don't know. Let's hear your side.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Sure I knew going in. If you lock Summers up,
- 3:21Speaker 6: he'd break. It's a matter of time before he started
- 3:23Speaker 6: seeing things and talked all over the place.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Why don't you do a little of the same.
- 3:26Speaker 6: I got no choice. Where do you want me to start?
- 3:28Speaker 5: How about the beginning?
- 3:29Speaker 6: As good a place as any?
- 3:30Speaker 5: I guess? All right, who's the big gun in the setup?
- 3:33Speaker 6: You're not gonna believe it?
- 3:34Speaker 5: Why don't you try us?
- 3:34Speaker 6: I don't know who he is. I haven't got the
- 3:36Speaker 6: slightest idea. And that's the truth.
- 3:37Speaker 7: Asking us to buy the fact you work for a
- 3:38Speaker 7: guy you don't know.
- 3:39Speaker 6: I don't care if you buy it or not. That's
- 3:40Speaker 6: the way it is. I don't know who the big
- 3:42Speaker 6: man is. He calls me where my place?
- 3:44Speaker 5: When?
- 3:45Speaker 6: When I got something for him?
- 3:46Speaker 5: How does he know?
- 3:46Speaker 6: We got to set time? Each day he calls in,
- 3:48Speaker 6: he tells me what he wants done. I tell him
- 3:50Speaker 6: what's going on?
- 3:51Speaker 5: What happens if you want to talk to him? And
- 3:52Speaker 5: it's not the time? Nothing? I gotta wait. How do
- 3:54Speaker 5: you get paid?
- 3:55Speaker 6: He calls me and tells me where to go. I
- 3:56Speaker 6: show up there and that does Wait?
- 3:58Speaker 5: All right, now you start at the beginning, give us
- 3:59Speaker 5: the alright.
- 4:02Speaker 6: I got him down about six months ago from outside
- 4:04Speaker 6: of Chicago, right. I laid around town for a few days,
- 4:06Speaker 6: and I got this rumble that maybe I can pick
- 4:08Speaker 6: up a job. You, Oh, just around. I couldn't tell
- 4:11Speaker 6: you where. It was a word here, another one there,
- 4:13Speaker 6: just around.
- 4:15Speaker 5: Go ahead, Well, I'm home.
- 4:16Speaker 6: One day in the phone rings, I answered, and the
- 4:18Speaker 6: guy asked me if I wanted to go to work
- 4:19Speaker 6: for him. I'm on my opera, So I asked him
- 4:21Speaker 6: what he wanted me to do. When he springs his
- 4:23Speaker 6: car ice thing on me, I told him.
- 4:24Speaker 5: I wanted no part of it. Yeah, he kept on
- 4:26Speaker 5: talking kept.
- 4:27Speaker 6: Telling me how I was such a sweet, clean racket.
- 4:29Speaker 6: Now we could work it without being tagged. Finally I
- 4:31Speaker 6: told him I might be willing to sit down and
- 4:33Speaker 6: talk to him about it. He says, no, go that
- 4:35Speaker 6: he didn't want anybody to know who he was, and
- 4:37Speaker 6: that went from me too. He told me he'd swing.
- 4:39Speaker 5: The operation on what do you mean swinging?
- 4:41Speaker 1: Well?
- 4:41Speaker 6: He said he'd tell me how to set it up,
- 4:42Speaker 6: how to make it work, w to contact, that he
- 4:44Speaker 6: had the organization already, but he needed a man to
- 4:46Speaker 6: take charge of the LA.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Part of it.
- 4:48Speaker 6: He told me that I was the guy he wanted shim.
- 4:50Speaker 5: How he happened to come to you, I don't know.
- 4:52Speaker 6: I did time when I was a kid for grand
- 4:54Speaker 6: theft auto first time I got off light.
- 4:56Speaker 5: What did you do the time? New York State? A
- 4:58Speaker 5: right going?
- 4:58Speaker 6: Well, maybe he got a rumble about that. He knew
- 5:01Speaker 6: that I was down, Maybe figured that I was the
- 5:02Speaker 6: guy to handle it for him. I don't know why
- 5:04Speaker 6: he just called.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Did you have any idea who this man on the
- 5:05Speaker 5: phone was?
- 5:06Speaker 6: No. I thought about it a lot. I tried to
- 5:08Speaker 6: come up with an answer, but there just wasn't any,
- 5:09Speaker 6: at least none that I could find.
- 5:11Speaker 5: Might have been somebody who met back east.
- 5:12Speaker 6: I don't know, could be. I got nowhere knowing the
- 5:14Speaker 6: way the deal worked out. I didn't have any reason
- 5:16Speaker 6: to get nosey. This guy really had to figure it
- 5:18Speaker 6: out like a charm. I still don't know how you
- 5:20Speaker 6: tagged us.
- 5:21Speaker 5: How about it?
- 5:21Speaker 6: You tell me you know better than Yeah?
- 5:25Speaker 5: Right, go ahead. What happened after you talk to this guy?
- 5:27Speaker 6: Well, I wasn't real anxious right off. I told him
- 5:29Speaker 6: I'd have to think about it. You see, next day
- 5:31Speaker 6: he cause again told me he wanted to tell me
- 5:33Speaker 6: the deal, lay it out for me. If I thought
- 5:35Speaker 6: it was good, I could go along with it. Otherwise
- 5:37Speaker 6: we could call it quits. Now I was just about
- 5:39Speaker 6: to get bounced out of my room, so I listened.
- 5:40Speaker 6: We must have talked for about an hour. Yeah, that's
- 5:42Speaker 6: when he laid it out for me. Where he had
- 5:44Speaker 6: looked the plane couldn't miss, wasn't anything he hadn't thought
- 5:47Speaker 6: of all along the line. He had the leaks all
- 5:48Speaker 6: plugged up tight. You see, all right, how this deal worked.
- 5:52Speaker 6: I thought Summers gave you the line up.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Yeah he did, But we'd like to hear it from you.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Sure, you ain't trying to con me into something.
- 5:57Speaker 5: You said it yourself. You had no choice, now I
- 5:58Speaker 5: have you.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Well, the way to work was smooth, real smooth. The Boss,
- 6:04Speaker 6: that's what I called him. He'd call me, tell me
- 6:05Speaker 6: what kind of car he wanted. I'd get in touch
- 6:07Speaker 6: with one of the boys and pass the order on.
- 6:09Speaker 6: You see, Yeah, Hype would steal the car, call me book.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Some Hype would steal the car and call me right away,
- 6:15Speaker 6: tell me where he had the car. And the Boss
- 6:17Speaker 6: would call and I'd tell him. He'd drive by look
- 6:19Speaker 6: at the car. If he okate did he'd call me
- 6:20Speaker 6: and I'd tell the fellow that stole it to get
- 6:22Speaker 6: it rolling.
- 6:23Speaker 5: They'd drive it to Mexico.
- 6:24Speaker 6: Yeah. First off, I'd meet him and give them enough
- 6:26Speaker 6: money to get back here though, and after that they'd
- 6:28Speaker 6: switch the plates in the car and.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Shove ou where'd you get the plates all?
- 6:30Speaker 6: The boss would get him some place, then they'd be
- 6:32Speaker 6: delivered to me. Always cold plates. I think he probably
- 6:35Speaker 6: got him if he used car lots. I don't know.
- 6:37Speaker 6: That's the way it looked like to me.
- 6:38Speaker 5: He said, Yeah, what happened?
- 6:39Speaker 6: Then another guy drive the car straight through. He'd delivered
- 6:42Speaker 6: the car to a contact down a Tijuana.
- 6:44Speaker 5: What about the payoff for Mexico?
- 6:45Speaker 6: How they worked there and I went through me too.
- 6:47Speaker 6: I'd get a call from the boss, he'd tell me
- 6:49Speaker 6: where the meat was. I'd show up and pick up
- 6:50Speaker 6: a paper bag with the narcotics.
- 6:52Speaker 5: That's the way the stolen cars were paid for. Narcotics.
- 6:54Speaker 6: Yeah, Heroin was the best. So by the time we
- 6:57Speaker 6: cut it down, I went a long way.
- 6:58Speaker 5: What'd you do with this stuff?
- 6:59Speaker 6: Well, what I'd used for paint off the hype that
- 7:01Speaker 6: lifted the car, and the rest went on.
- 7:02Speaker 5: To the boss. How'd you get it? Ton?
- 7:04Speaker 6: He'd call me, tell me where to leave it. Maybe
- 7:05Speaker 6: an alley down town, a telephone pole on Central, once
- 7:09Speaker 6: in the fountain, right in front of city, or every
- 7:11Speaker 6: time it was a different place.
- 7:12Speaker 5: Yeah. Is it possible any of the others might know
- 7:13Speaker 5: who he is?
- 7:14Speaker 6: I talked to him, not him, No, I don't think
- 7:16Speaker 6: they'll hold him out.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Yeah, this boss, You ever say anything that could let
- 7:19Speaker 7: you know where he was calling from?
- 7:20Speaker 8: No?
- 7:21Speaker 5: How about his voice? You got anything from man?
- 7:22Speaker 6: What do you mean do you have an accent something
- 7:24Speaker 6: like that?
- 7:24Speaker 5: No?
- 7:25Speaker 6: Nothing, He talked just like you and me. There's one thing.
- 7:27Speaker 6: What's that he's been around? He knows the tricks. He
- 7:29Speaker 6: knows about me, everything I've ever done. Where he talks,
- 7:31Speaker 6: you know, he knows all the rackets.
- 7:33Speaker 5: He ever sent you anything through the mail?
- 7:35Speaker 6: What do you mean like with the Postm's right now?
- 7:37Speaker 6: A couple of times he sent me a batch of
- 7:39Speaker 6: plates to use in the cars. But they come by
- 7:40Speaker 6: and missing you.
- 7:41Speaker 5: One of the companies here, No, just a guy.
- 7:43Speaker 6: I asked him who sent him? But they couldn't tell me.
- 7:44Speaker 5: Couldn't or wouldn't.
- 7:45Speaker 6: I ain't sure, but I really don't think they knew.
- 7:47Speaker 6: It's always a different guy each time, never the same one.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Twice he got some of the plates around.
- 7:51Speaker 6: Oh, we used the last one on the car last night.
- 7:53Speaker 5: When is the boss usually send him here?
- 7:54Speaker 6: It depends how many cars we've taken. He keeps track.
- 7:56Speaker 6: When we're out of coal plates, another batch of him
- 7:58Speaker 6: shows up. It depends on the car.
- 8:00Speaker 7: How about the other men working with you? The ones
- 8:02Speaker 7: here in town? You give us a list of them?
- 8:04Speaker 6: If I do, it makes me a pretty big think
- 8:05Speaker 6: it doesn't, it's going to make a big trouble. I
- 8:07Speaker 6: of course, So there's none you guys can promise me
- 8:09Speaker 6: for this.
- 8:10Speaker 5: You know the answer to that too.
- 8:11Speaker 7: We can see that the District Attorney's office knows about
- 8:13Speaker 7: the healthy gave us.
- 8:13Speaker 5: That's all we can do. It's better than nothing.
- 8:15Speaker 6: I don't care. I'll give you the names now.
- 8:16Speaker 3: When this goes to trial, we can figure you'll be
- 8:18Speaker 3: a witness for the state.
- 8:18Speaker 6: Against who well, this boss, whoever he has Sure if
- 8:21Speaker 6: you can get him, I don't think you will love
- 8:22Speaker 6: that right. Sure it stands to reason. I worked for
- 8:24Speaker 6: the guy. I never got to say. He ain't gonna
- 8:26Speaker 6: want to see the police.
- 8:27Speaker 5: Now. He's a little like you, and he huh, he's
- 8:29Speaker 5: got no choice.
- 8:34Speaker 7: We got the list of names from the suspect and
- 8:36Speaker 7: then we checked with Captain Carl Shi in our Coonics division.
- 8:39Speaker 7: He assigned two men to work with us on the case.
- 8:41Speaker 7: We got in touch with the Sheriff's department and built
- 8:43Speaker 7: Sergeant Judge Shelton.
- 8:44Speaker 5: In on the developments.
- 8:45Speaker 7: A call was put into al Gaton at San Diego
- 8:48Speaker 7: and he said that he'd get in touch with the
- 8:49Speaker 7: Mexican authorities and line up the cooperation we needed from them.
- 8:53Speaker 7: The name of the contact in Dijuana was given to them,
- 8:55Speaker 7: but they were unable to.
- 8:56Speaker 5: Locate the suspect. We asked the staff's office.
- 8:59Speaker 7: To make a new run of memo of the auto
- 9:00Speaker 7: thefts and an attempt to come up with a new
- 9:02Speaker 7: lead on the head of the ring of thieves. They
- 9:04Speaker 7: turned up six leads that were checked out and netted
- 9:06Speaker 7: us nothing. We got in touch with the State Highway
- 9:09Speaker 7: Patrol and we worked out a system to intercept any
- 9:11Speaker 7: cars that might be stolen in the future by the
- 9:13Speaker 7: same gang.
- 9:14Speaker 5: The plan was that in the event we.
- 9:16Speaker 7: Received a call regarding a stolen vehicle, we'd put it
- 9:19Speaker 7: on the air with the heading of the code word ALYX.
- 9:21Speaker 7: This would alert all police officers between Los Angeles and
- 9:24Speaker 7: the Mexican border. The men named for us by the suspect,
- 9:27Speaker 7: Harry Sloan, were all taken into custody. Further interrogation netted
- 9:31Speaker 7: us no new information. In the meantime, the leader of
- 9:34Speaker 7: the gang had apparently succeeded in setting up a new
- 9:36Speaker 7: group of thieves and was operating again. The thefts continued
- 9:40Speaker 7: through the next month. During that time, all precautions were
- 9:42Speaker 7: taken to keep the stolen cars from getting to the border.
- 9:45Speaker 5: With the speed with which the.
- 9:46Speaker 7: Gang operated made apprehending them almost impossible. The radio operation
- 9:50Speaker 7: with patrol units along the highway was tried, but by
- 9:52Speaker 7: the time the cars were reported stolen to us and
- 9:54Speaker 7: we were able to get a broadcast out on them,
- 9:56Speaker 7: they were already across the border.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Thursday, July thirtieth, Franks and I checked into the office.
- 10:02Speaker 5: I'll check the book right anything, nh, it's call a
- 10:08Speaker 5: hair from say, that's all you.
- 10:11Speaker 8: Know.
- 10:11Speaker 5: The skipper sure hacked about this thing, you know. I
- 10:13Speaker 5: Can you blame him?
- 10:14Speaker 8: No?
- 10:14Speaker 5: I suppose nice. He got a lot of people leaning
- 10:15Speaker 5: on him. I don't know, Joe. It's about time the
- 10:18Speaker 5: breaks start falling on our side.
- 10:19Speaker 7: Well, we've been saying that for a long time too.
- 10:21Speaker 7: Doesn't seem too much good. Even when we do nail
- 10:22Speaker 7: the big gun, we're gonna have to prove it and
- 10:24Speaker 7: that isn't gonna be easy. Yeah, the way he's gotta
- 10:26Speaker 7: work that, it's gonna be offul to have to build
- 10:27Speaker 7: a case it'll stick.
- 10:28Speaker 5: Well. He doesn't handle the narcotics, he doesn't handle the money.
- 10:31Speaker 5: All he does is okay to jobs there. But it's
- 10:32Speaker 5: gotta be an outlet for the hairin. Where's he getting
- 10:35Speaker 5: rid of it?
- 10:35Speaker 3: That's a good question, you know. He's been trying to
- 10:37Speaker 3: come up with the answer a long time. No rumbles informans,
- 10:39Speaker 3: don't know anything.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I get it out off that Friday, that's ma'am. Well
- 10:47Speaker 5: maybe we can help you, yes, ma'am. Uh, well, yes,
- 10:52Speaker 5: well could we meet you? Oh no, ma'am, you won't
- 10:54Speaker 5: be involved. Yo. What's that address again? Yeah, yes, ma'am,
- 11:01Speaker 5: we'll be there. What about ten minutes? Was that no, ma'am,
- 11:04Speaker 5: just my partner. Yes, that's right, all right, see that right? Goodbye?
- 11:10Speaker 5: Oh maybe this is a break. It was a woman.
- 11:12Speaker 7: She wouldn't give us her name. She said that wasn't important.
- 11:14Speaker 7: She wants us to meet her.
- 11:15Speaker 5: What about something to do with use cars? Ten ten am,
- 11:22Speaker 5: Frank and I left.
- 11:23Speaker 3: The office and drove to Hollywood to meet the woman
- 11:25Speaker 3: who called in. She said that she wanted to meet
- 11:27Speaker 3: us in one of the.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Coffee shops along Vine Street.
- 11:29Speaker 7: We drove out the new Freeway to Hollywood Boulevard and
- 11:31Speaker 7: then down to Vine Street. We parked the car and
- 11:33Speaker 7: walked up to the coffee shop. The girl on the
- 11:36Speaker 7: phone and refused to give us her name, so Frank
- 11:37Speaker 7: and I had no way of knowing who she might be.
- 11:39Speaker 7: She told me to take a booth at the back
- 11:41Speaker 7: of the restaurant and that she'd find us. Frank and
- 11:43Speaker 7: I said, Alan ordered a cup of coffee and we waited.
- 11:46Speaker 7: There was no sign of the caller. Eleven am she
- 11:49Speaker 7: still hadn't shown up. They were about ready to leave
- 11:51Speaker 7: when a tall woman, well dressed in their middle thirties
- 11:54Speaker 7: came in.
- 11:54Speaker 3: She stopped at the door and looked around the place,
- 11:56Speaker 3: and then she headed for our booth. So now she's
- 12:01Speaker 3: heading for the next boot.
- 12:02Speaker 8: Are you from the police.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Are you a policeman? Oh what, No, I'm mine.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Are you from the cops?
- 12:12Speaker 8: Yes, ma'am, I'm the one who called you and told
- 12:14Speaker 8: you to meet me here.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, I'm Joe Friday. This is my partner, Frank sma.
- 12:17Speaker 8: You got some way to prove it, ma'am.
- 12:19Speaker 5: Prove it your cops.
- 12:20Speaker 8: I don't want to talk to nobody who laying the cops.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am, here's my ID card.
- 12:25Speaker 8: Oh yeah, that's you, all right?
- 12:27Speaker 5: Yes?
- 12:27Speaker 8: How about you?
- 12:28Speaker 5: Yes, here's mine?
- 12:29Speaker 8: Oh yeah, Oh say, that's a real nice picture. You
- 12:34Speaker 8: put on some weight, haven't you.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Do You like to sit down? Man? We can get
- 12:36Speaker 5: started on this. Oh, yes, yair, what was your name?
- 12:41Speaker 8: And you don't need that, It doesn't make any difference,
- 12:43Speaker 8: all right.
- 12:43Speaker 5: We order you something maybe, Yeah, I like a.
- 12:45Speaker 8: Coke, alright, I'll get it jump you make sure it's
- 12:47Speaker 8: a real coke, though, genuine. Al right, ma'am, I'm sorry,
- 12:52Speaker 8: I'm late. I got tied up.
- 12:53Speaker 5: That's all right, man, whaton if we can get started?
- 12:55Speaker 8: Well, I was across the street waiting by the radio station, yes, ma'am,
- 12:58Speaker 8: waiting for that singer. Oh, what's his name? You know
- 13:02Speaker 8: what I mean, the cute one with the curly hair.
- 13:05Speaker 8: You never can think of his name anyway. I was
- 13:07Speaker 8: waiting for him to come out. He's doing a show
- 13:09Speaker 8: over there, you know, in a wonderful voice, and he's
- 13:11Speaker 8: so cute.
- 13:12Speaker 5: I know, what's this all about? This thing you wanted
- 13:13Speaker 5: to tell us.
- 13:14Speaker 8: Crazy kids in their autograph books. I couldn't even get
- 13:16Speaker 8: a mar him.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Miserable. I wonder if we could get out of business here, ma'am.
- 13:19Speaker 5: You said on the phone that you could give us
- 13:21Speaker 5: some information.
- 13:22Speaker 8: Yeah, I think I can help you out. This seems
- 13:24Speaker 8: to me that you might want to talk to this
- 13:25Speaker 8: man what's his name? Well, maybe I had to tell
- 13:28Speaker 8: you about him first, and then if you want to
- 13:30Speaker 8: know his name, I can tell you that.
- 13:31Speaker 5: All right, ma'am, go ahead, here's a cooke, ma'am.
- 13:34Speaker 6: I think.
- 13:37Speaker 8: Mm. That's good, it's cool.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Do you want to go on on, yes, ma'am about
- 13:45Speaker 5: the man? Oh?
- 13:46Speaker 8: Yeah, Well, there's this fella and he's got an office
- 13:49Speaker 8: in a building where I work. Where would that be,
- 13:51Speaker 8: a corner of Hollywood and Dick Street, right on the corner,
- 13:54Speaker 8: ninth floor. Elevators always out of order, Yes, ma'am. Well,
- 13:58Speaker 8: he's got this office and I see him a lot,
- 13:59Speaker 8: you know, the elevator, maybe down at the magazine rack
- 14:02Speaker 8: and the lobby. Anyway, I ask him a lot. Well,
- 14:04Speaker 8: about a week ago, he asked me for a date,
- 14:06Speaker 8: just like that, come up to me while I was
- 14:08Speaker 8: looking at TV stars Parade as a magazine all about
- 14:12Speaker 8: television starts, where they work, what they're like, all interesting
- 14:16Speaker 8: things like that, like do they like garlic? And what
- 14:18Speaker 8: kind of not do they use in their ties? All
- 14:20Speaker 8: interesting things like that.
- 14:22Speaker 5: So this man ask you for a date, huh?
- 14:25Speaker 8: Came up just like grass and asked me out. Call.
- 14:27Speaker 8: First off, I was kind of flattered, you know, he's
- 14:30Speaker 8: pretty nice. That's a nice car and all. And I
- 14:33Speaker 8: told him I couldn't go out with him. And then
- 14:35Speaker 8: I told him and I thought he should be ashamed
- 14:36Speaker 8: of himself. I told him he should be ashamed of himself.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am. Pure see.
- 14:42Speaker 8: I know he was married, nice little wife, real cute.
- 14:45Speaker 8: I saw a couple of times around the building. Lately
- 14:48Speaker 8: she hasn't been too well. He's real cute. Imagine him
- 14:52Speaker 8: asking me out and him a married man.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Well, yes, ma'am, But why do you think that the
- 14:55Speaker 5: police might be interested in him?
- 14:57Speaker 8: I'm coming to that. That was good. Well, I kind
- 15:05Speaker 8: of checked around, you know, to see what this guy
- 15:07Speaker 8: did in my business he was in, Yes, ma'am. He
- 15:09Speaker 8: used to use car business, sells old cars.
- 15:11Speaker 5: I see.
- 15:12Speaker 8: That's it, sells used cars in an office building, not
- 15:15Speaker 8: even a lot. Nothing. There's a glass door.
- 15:18Speaker 5: Is there any lettering on it? Yeah?
- 15:21Speaker 8: Not about that too, But there isn't.
- 15:22Speaker 3: No, that's all.
- 15:23Speaker 8: He's got just this little tiny office desk and a
- 15:25Speaker 8: couple of chairs. Glass door.
- 15:27Speaker 5: Well, ma'am, there's nothing illegal in that, you know.
- 15:29Speaker 8: Oh yeah, but he doesn't have a license, No, sir,
- 15:32Speaker 8: he doesn't have a license.
- 15:33Speaker 5: Big.
- 15:34Speaker 8: I work for a lawyer alphabetical filing. And Jeita, Oh,
- 15:37Speaker 8: I asked my boss if you didn't have to have
- 15:39Speaker 8: some kind of license to sell cars in my boss,
- 15:41Speaker 8: as you do. This man doesn't have one. He goes
- 15:44Speaker 8: out and buys these old cars and then fixes them
- 15:45Speaker 8: up and sells them.
- 15:46Speaker 6: And he doesn't have a license.
- 15:48Speaker 8: Not only that, the man he sells the cars too.
- 15:51Speaker 5: Why do you say that, because I do.
- 15:53Speaker 8: That's why he's coming in the office. And they sit
- 15:56Speaker 8: there and talk and talk and then they leave. I
- 15:57Speaker 8: get in the hall sometimes and they laugh and they're
- 15:59Speaker 8: real spoogy guys, real spooky.
- 16:02Speaker 5: And what's the man of man?
- 16:03Speaker 8: Man that just came in? Wonder the kind of blonde
- 16:05Speaker 8: hair you see him?
- 16:07Speaker 5: Yes, ma'am? What about him?
- 16:08Speaker 8: Isn't that?
- 16:09Speaker 3: Oh?
- 16:10Speaker 8: What's his name? I know it as well I know
- 16:12Speaker 8: my own. He started in all those space things, you know,
- 16:14Speaker 8: like the Saturn Saga and the Martian Maniac was on
- 16:16Speaker 8: last week. And this saw that one that just came in. Well,
- 16:19Speaker 8: he had on this kind of suit all covered with lights,
- 16:22Speaker 8: a space suit. Was so cute.
- 16:24Speaker 5: Yes, Well, if you'll tell us the name of the
- 16:26Speaker 5: man in your building and you'll check on him.
- 16:28Speaker 8: Oh there's more to the story, ma'am.
- 16:30Speaker 5: There's more.
- 16:31Speaker 8: I'm not finished.
- 16:32Speaker 5: Would you like to sit down and go on?
- 16:33Speaker 6: Oh? Yeah.
- 16:36Speaker 8: Well, day before yesterday, I'm standing by the elevator and
- 16:39Speaker 8: one of this man's customers come out of the office
- 16:41Speaker 8: and he walked over the elevator. He reached into his
- 16:44Speaker 8: pocket and took out a cigarette. Kept the pack up
- 16:46Speaker 8: here in the pocket up here, you know, here with
- 16:48Speaker 8: the handkerchief.
- 16:49Speaker 5: Yes.
- 16:49Speaker 8: Man, Well, when he pulled a pack out, he dropped
- 16:51Speaker 8: a little package fell around on the floor, and he
- 16:53Speaker 8: didn't see it right away. He got into the elevator
- 16:56Speaker 8: and went down, and I went over and picked it out,
- 16:58Speaker 8: a little tiny thing, got it right here in hers.
- 17:02Speaker 8: I was going to give it to the man, and
- 17:04Speaker 8: then I thought maybe I better come to you. And
- 17:07Speaker 8: I saw a picture of a thing like this in
- 17:08Speaker 8: the newspaper. Here it is and you just look at
- 17:11Speaker 8: that there you see, yes, ma'am, what is it?
- 17:17Speaker 7: Jeff Approly, eleven forty am. We continued to talk to
- 17:25Speaker 7: the woman. She gave us the name of the man
- 17:27Speaker 7: who ran the used car agency in.
- 17:28Speaker 5: Her building, Ralph Holland.
- 17:30Speaker 7: She also gave us a description of him and a
- 17:32Speaker 7: description of the man she'd seen dropped the narcotics. We
- 17:35Speaker 7: went back to the office and checked the name through
- 17:36Speaker 7: R and I. Holland had a record listing one arrest
- 17:39Speaker 7: on suspicion of violation of the state and narcotic ag
- 17:41Speaker 7: The date of the arrest was August seventeenth, nineteen thirty seven.
- 17:45Speaker 7: He'd been released for lack of evidence. We checked the
- 17:47Speaker 7: name in the phone book and came up with a
- 17:49Speaker 7: business and a residence address.
- 17:51Speaker 5: He lived with his.
- 17:51Speaker 7: Wife in a large track out in the San Fernando Valley.
- 17:54Speaker 7: One fifteen PM, Frank and I drove out to talk
- 17:57Speaker 7: with Hollan's neighbors. They told us that the family was
- 17:59Speaker 7: known and respected throughout the area.
- 18:01Speaker 5: None of them could recount any actions that might cause suspicion.
- 18:05Speaker 3: They told us the Hollands had lived in the house
- 18:06Speaker 3: for the past five years, but that Missus Holland had
- 18:09Speaker 3: said that the family was planning to move into town.
- 18:11Speaker 3: From the neighbors, we found out that Missus Holland was
- 18:13Speaker 3: a semi invalid and rarely left the house.
- 18:16Speaker 5: We called the office and arrange for.
- 18:17Speaker 7: A stake out on the house, and then we drove
- 18:19Speaker 7: back into Hollywood to talk with Holland's business associate.
- 18:22Speaker 5: From them, we got the same story.
- 18:24Speaker 7: Ralph Holland was a respected member of the community and
- 18:26Speaker 7: was a member of several civic clubs. None of his
- 18:28Speaker 7: friends could tell us much about his business activities. We
- 18:31Speaker 7: did learn, however, that many of his friends couldn't figure
- 18:33Speaker 7: how the family could live at the scale that they did.
- 18:36Speaker 7: They said that Holland had a good business, but they
- 18:37Speaker 7: couldn't see how he could.
- 18:38Speaker 5: Afford the new cars that he drove for the new
- 18:40Speaker 5: house he was planning to move into.
- 18:42Speaker 7: By forty six pm, we checked back into the office
- 18:44Speaker 7: and talked with Captain Nelson. It should take us a
- 18:47Speaker 7: couple of days to get the information back from the banks.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Yeah. In the meantime we got a lot of walk
- 18:50Speaker 5: into It's going to be tough. I'll Skipper say, we
- 18:53Speaker 5: could have all the help we needed. You've get in
- 18:54Speaker 5: touch with narcotics. Yeah, I called him this morning. They'll
- 18:56Speaker 5: give us a hand. Yeah, that's duty.
- 18:58Speaker 3: And then what do you mean, Well, we say, the
- 19:00Speaker 3: guy's gilly looks good for it.
- 19:02Speaker 5: Not a big jet. Got to prove it.
- 19:16Speaker 2: You are listening to Dragnet the authentic story of your
- 19:19Speaker 2: police force in action, years ahead of them all.
- 19:24Speaker 3: Chesterfield is years ahead of all cigarettes. Chesterfield quality is highest.
- 19:29Speaker 3: Here's the proof. Recent chemical analyzes give an index of
- 19:33Speaker 3: good quality for the country's six leading cigarette brands. The
- 19:37Speaker 3: index of good Quality table, which is a ratio of
- 19:40Speaker 3: high sugar to low nicotine, shows Chesterfield quality highest. Chesterfield
- 19:45Speaker 3: Quality Highest fifteen percent higher than its nearest competitor. Chesterfield
- 19:50Speaker 3: Quality Highest thirty one percent higher than the average of
- 19:53Speaker 3: the five other leading brands. Don't you want to try
- 19:57Speaker 3: a cigarette with a record like this Chesterfield first, with
- 20:00Speaker 3: premium quality and best for you. Try Chesterfield Today Regular
- 20:06Speaker 3: or King Size.
- 20:18Speaker 5: Friday, July thirty first, the legwork started.
- 20:21Speaker 7: Two teams of men were assigned from auto theft detail
- 20:24Speaker 7: to help us, and Narcotics sent two more teams to
- 20:26Speaker 7: work with us. For the next three weeks, Ralph Holland
- 20:28Speaker 7: was kept under twenty four hour surveillance. A stakehout was
- 20:31Speaker 7: maintained on his house and on his office. His business
- 20:33Speaker 7: records were checked.
- 20:34Speaker 5: From these, we came up with an estimate of what
- 20:36Speaker 5: the suspect's income was. Then we began to check his expenditures.
- 20:39Speaker 7: As a result, we found that he had control of
- 20:41Speaker 7: at least two hundred and fifty thousand.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Dollars that his business could not account for.
- 20:45Speaker 7: Everyone who visited the Hollands, either at their home or
- 20:47Speaker 7: at his office, was checked on. Among his visitors, we
- 20:50Speaker 7: found several known narcotic dealers. The auto thefts continued, but
- 20:54Speaker 7: by now the code system had begun to work. From
- 20:56Speaker 7: July thirty first to August twenty fifth, sixteen cars were
- 20:59Speaker 7: stolen that we attributed to Holland's operation.
- 21:02Speaker 5: All of them were recovered between.
- 21:03Speaker 7: Los Angeles and the Mexican border. All of the drivers
- 21:06Speaker 7: of the cars were taken into custody, but none of
- 21:08Speaker 7: them could give us any information to aid us in
- 21:09Speaker 7: obtaining a conviction. During that time, Holland didn't make any
- 21:13Speaker 7: attempt to handle any narcotics.
- 21:15Speaker 5: A dictograph had been.
- 21:16Speaker 7: Placed in his office and all of his conversations were monitored,
- 21:18Speaker 7: but nothing incriminating was said. We got the address of
- 21:21Speaker 7: the new home the suspect had bought, and a complete
- 21:24Speaker 7: set of.
- 21:24Speaker 5: Listening equipment was installed there.
- 21:26Speaker 7: From the time the couple moved into the house, their
- 21:28Speaker 7: conversations were monitored twenty four hours a day. The recordings
- 21:31Speaker 7: were played for Captain Nelson, Captain Shi of Narcotics Division,
- 21:34Speaker 7: and for the men from the District Attorney's office. They
- 21:37Speaker 7: agreed that there wasn't enough evidence to issue an indictment. Friday,
- 21:40Speaker 7: August twenty eighth, Frank and I checked into the listening post.
- 21:44Speaker 7: I might as well sit down, Frank.
- 21:46Speaker 5: We got a long night. It's gonna be better with
- 21:47Speaker 5: a speaker. Fella's downtown putting a speaker. See earphones get
- 21:50Speaker 5: too heavy? Oh yeah, I was talking to Guy Anderson.
- 21:52Speaker 5: He was out here.
- 21:53Speaker 3: Said by the time he sat with those things in
- 21:55Speaker 3: your head for a couple of hours, feels like somebody
- 21:56Speaker 3: shot your ears full of novagain.
- 21:58Speaker 5: Speaker's better man, easier too. I don't better turn on her. Yeah,
- 22:03Speaker 5: I'm come home. Yeah, just walked in before we got here.
- 22:05Speaker 5: There they come.
- 22:07Speaker 4: O Cary, Honey. Yeah, I'm gonna drink you. What they
- 22:12Speaker 4: call I'll fix it.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Sounds like a living rub.
- 22:15Speaker 2: Yeah, one take trip with me.
- 22:18Speaker 4: We're two. Oh, oh, may we drive down south? You
- 22:21Speaker 4: know I figured I'm going to Mexico. Oh, I got it, Honey,
- 22:24Speaker 4: And anybody else that's said things been rough late. They've
- 22:26Speaker 4: been picking the boys up as fast as I can
- 22:28Speaker 4: find 'em. Why did you call it quit?
- 22:30Speaker 5: You?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Maybe enough just about through that, honey, that's the last trip.
- 22:34Speaker 4: I'm glad of that.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Honey, I don't like it.
- 22:37Speaker 8: Maybe I'm just getting jittery, but I swear there's been
- 22:40Speaker 8: men watching the house.
- 22:41Speaker 4: Good, take a drink. Oh, you're just getting jumpy, honey,
- 22:46Speaker 4: there's anybody watching and anybody who knows about it. Gad
- 22:49Speaker 4: you think I'm not too sure anymore? Is there's nothing
- 22:52Speaker 4: to worry about.
- 22:52Speaker 5: We're clean.
- 22:53Speaker 4: This is the last trip after.
- 22:54Speaker 6: That, we call it quit.
- 22:55Speaker 4: So okay, glad when it's over, if you go with me,
- 23:00Speaker 4: that'll be good for you to get out of the house,
- 23:02Speaker 4: see the country, get you over this case of nerves
- 23:04Speaker 4: you got. It might be kind of nice. Sure, the
- 23:09Speaker 4: best thing in the world for you to see some
- 23:11Speaker 4: new thing. When do you think it goes? Oh, I'm
- 23:14Speaker 4: gonna pick up the car in the morning early. I
- 23:16Speaker 4: thought we'd get away about eight and can stay down
- 23:19Speaker 4: there for a couple of days and get back to Tuesday.
- 23:21Speaker 4: Take our time, have a few last let's go pick
- 23:24Speaker 4: up the car. The kid named Jimmy. You're gonna be
- 23:26Speaker 4: to halfway just outside of delamorrow. I'll take the car
- 23:29Speaker 4: from there. I'll be glad, I know I can feel,
- 23:35Speaker 4: and I'll give you my word tomorrow. That's the end
- 23:37Speaker 4: of it.
- 23:38Speaker 5: Well, let's hope he's not kidding.
- 23:45Speaker 7: The following morning, at six thirty am, Frank and I,
- 23:47Speaker 7: along with the men from Narcotics Division, we're parked down
- 23:49Speaker 7: the street from the Holland home. At eight thirty six am,
- 23:52Speaker 7: we saw the couple.
- 23:53Speaker 5: Come out of the house and get into Ralph Holland's car.
- 23:55Speaker 7: They drove out to the perviit of Boulevard Andy turned south.
- 23:58Speaker 7: All units of the state police notified to watch for
- 24:01Speaker 7: the car. Members of the Sheriff's Department were stationed along
- 24:03Speaker 7: the road just outside del Mar.
- 24:05Speaker 5: If we could take.
- 24:06Speaker 7: Holland into custody while he was in the possession of
- 24:08Speaker 7: a stolen car and confront him with the stories of
- 24:10Speaker 7: the two suspects we picked up earlier, George Summers and
- 24:12Speaker 7: Harry Sloan, we thought that there was a.
- 24:13Speaker 5: Good chance that he might confess. In any event, we'd
- 24:17Speaker 5: be able to bring him to trial on the grand
- 24:18Speaker 5: theft auto charge. The meet was made with the man.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Who'd stolen the car, as scheduled, and Holland started to
- 24:24Speaker 3: drive south to the border.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Men from the Sheriff's department took the thief into custody,
- 24:27Speaker 5: and we followed Holland. About four minutes.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Later, we pulled the car over to the side of
- 24:31Speaker 3: the road in front of a small coffee stand. He
- 24:33Speaker 3: and his wife got out of the car and they
- 24:34Speaker 3: went into the place. We drove by, and then we
- 24:36Speaker 3: doubled back and parked about one.
- 24:37Speaker 5: Hundred yards up the road from the stand. Let's go.
- 24:40Speaker 5: The boy should be around back by now. Yeah, like,
- 24:43Speaker 5: come on at the end of the corn. Yeah you
- 24:52Speaker 5: Ralph Holland.
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yes, where you want?
- 24:54Speaker 5: You? Driving at Greendwick out there? Yeah? So what wonder
- 24:57Speaker 5: if we'd see the registration papers on the car? What
- 24:59Speaker 5: poor sauage, we'd like see the registration?
- 25:06Speaker 6: What are you doing?
- 25:07Speaker 3: You got no right?
- 25:08Speaker 5: Hit him like that.
- 25:08Speaker 8: We weren't doing anything.
- 25:09Speaker 3: You got no right?
- 25:12Speaker 6: Quite a little rough, didn't you.
- 25:13Speaker 5: We didn't call it, you did right? Hands it back,
- 25:15Speaker 5: you standstill? How about it? He's clean, You guys, you
- 25:20Speaker 5: got a lot of nerve to come in here beat
- 25:21Speaker 5: him up like this. Don't worry about it.
- 25:24Speaker 6: Somebody had to, but there wasn't anybody that knew nobody
- 25:26Speaker 6: at all? How'd you find out?
- 25:27Speaker 5: All?
- 25:27Speaker 8: Right?
- 25:27Speaker 5: Come on, it's perfect the way around.
- 25:30Speaker 6: Where'd they go sour when they make the.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Mistake when you started? The story you have just heard
- 25:43Speaker 5: is true.
- 25:44Speaker 3: The names were changed to protect the innocent.
- 25:46Speaker 2: On January fourteenth, trial was held in Department eighty nine,
- 25:49Speaker 2: Superior Court of the State of California in and for
- 25:52Speaker 2: the County of Los Angeles. In a moment, the results
- 25:54Speaker 2: of that tribe.
- 25:55Speaker 5: Now here is our star, Jack Webb, Thank you, George Familin.
- 25:59Speaker 7: Next time you buy cigarettes, I wish you'd kind of
- 26:01Speaker 7: keep us in mind and remember what we've told you
- 26:03Speaker 7: about Chesterfield first with premium quality, highest quality in both
- 26:08Speaker 7: regular and King's size. You smoke a couple of packs
- 26:11Speaker 7: and you'll see what I mean. Chesterfield's are milder with
- 26:14Speaker 7: a wonderful taste, and you want to remember this. Chesterfield
