- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday, Barry Nixon alongside the one and only Jason Riley.
- 0:14Jay, you might notice I'm coming to you from a different area of
- 0:18The Newsroom because sometimes in life we got to adjust to
- 0:22circumstances. Doesn't matter what that means.
- 0:25I'm happy to see you. We have a lot to discuss.
- 0:27You got your shot ready because I know we have a format on this
- 0:30show as we do have a format of saying.
- 0:32Yeah, Barry, we've got a format that we carry with us from show
- 0:35#1 all the way through to the end of time.
- 0:38I do. I am in solidarity with you
- 0:40because I know you have a workout after the show, so I am
- 0:42consuming good old fashioned water.
- 0:44What have you got? Well I got water with a little
- 0:46bit of Godzilla piss pre workout.
- 0:49Here's to you and you. It almost hits like a Jameson.
- 0:55Isn't that weird? Does it?
- 0:56I wouldn't know that. Not really.
- 0:58That is a taste that only you can, you'd only can bring.
- 1:01But that's kind of, I like the idea of like doing a workout and
- 1:04having something that was like doing shots of Jameson as you're
- 1:07doing the workout. Like, wouldn't that be the
- 1:08ultimate quencher? Like, we should come up with
- 1:11that. This.
- 1:12Yeah. I don't know whether we should
- 1:13come up with that because we're not like food scientists, but
- 1:16whoever makes pre workouts should consider a Jameson
- 1:19flavoring. No alcohol, but just the
- 1:22flavoring. I feel like we could bridge this
- 1:25the the manufacturers and Jameson and we should take a
- 1:28component of this like a two shot Tuesday work pre workout
- 1:32that you would consume tastes like Jameson two shots, no more,
- 1:36no less gets you ready for your workout.
- 1:39I think that is ultimate. Now the the shots may need to
- 1:41be, you know, 250 milliliters each should be some pretty big
- 1:44shots, but but that would get it in, yeah.
- 1:47It would get it in, yeah. I've learned actually from Andre
- 1:49that less is more. The way you want to do relief
- 1:52with pre workout is you want to kind of make it like you would
- 1:54like a long espresso. See how that's Yeah, it's pretty
- 1:58cloudy there at the bottom. You still do your full serving
- 2:00but you add less water. And in the past I was putting
- 2:03way more water with the same sized scoop and I think I was
- 2:08losing some value there. To urine, is that it because it
- 2:11you pee it out or what's the wide it just gets diluted?
- 2:15Yeah, it just gets a little too diluted and you want that punch.
- 2:19That's what that's the whole point of taking a free workout.
- 2:21If you want that, that kicked to the face, that says it's time to
- 2:24start lifting. What does it do specifically
- 2:26that makes that happen? Makes your fingers tingle.
- 2:29Makes your earlobes tingle. Makes your front bottom tingle.
- 2:32What is it? I don't know, It's, it's a
- 2:35beautiful concoction of God knows what, but I can tell you
- 2:38this much. I always get that extra Rep in,
- 2:40I always get that extra set in and the results speak for
- 2:44themselves. So yeah, yeah, I'm going to keep
- 2:45taking it until it gets banned by whatever and the Drug
- 2:50Enforcement folks it whatever. I look forward to watching this
- 2:54journey grow, you know, and happen.
- 2:57And until they eventually just carry you out the door and
- 2:59they'll just be like, Sir, Sir, this is you're the last one in
- 3:02Canada using this. So this has been this is this
- 3:05has been used in our toxic waste.
- 3:07But you'd be like, it makes my fingers tingle.
- 3:09Give me another set, boss. Yeah, it'd be great.
- 3:13Very. You know what else?
- 3:15When you're tingling, that's a sense that there's some magic in
- 3:17the air. And I have a feeling that you
- 3:19have taken advantage of something over this past weekend
- 3:23that I think our audience is excited to know about In the
- 3:26land of magic. Can you bring us up to speed on
- 3:29what you've encountered and and what can you share with us about
- 3:32the secrets of the other side? Right.
- 3:34I can't give away any magic secrets, but what I did do is
- 3:38see Penn and Teller live at Meridian Hall.
- 3:41Now, you and I are familiar with Meridian Hall because it's where
- 3:43we saw Tim Dillon a few years ago.
- 3:45So it's a nice size theater. I went with the movie guy, Rob
- 3:48Pete's. We had some very good seats.
- 3:51And I got to tell you, not having really any familiarity
- 3:54with these guys other than I believe they have a television
- 3:57show. I've never watched it, but I'm
- 3:59familiar with the fact that they're.
- 4:00Yeah, they're they're what I learned is that these guys are
- 4:03actually the kind of equal part comedy and magic.
- 4:07Like, yeah, it was, it was a hilarious show.
- 4:10And they, the audience participation was through the
- 4:12roof. They threw out the whole thing.
- 4:14It was about an hour and a half. No intermission, by the way.
- 4:17OK, they probably brought 30 people on stage from the
- 4:20audience. Wow.
- 4:22OK. Yeah, that's incredible.
- 4:23And that's you're tightly packed in there at Meridian Hall.
- 4:25So people are hopefully on the end seats.
- 4:28I think it would be the end seats mostly.
- 4:29Got the time to go up. No, it wasn't really.
- 4:32Not at all. It was anyone who had their hand
- 4:34up, which was almost. Every, everyone.
- 4:36Did you go up? Yeah, I did not.
- 4:38I didn't put my hand up and neither did Rob.
- 4:41No. OK, No, we were happy just to be
- 4:43there to witness, but it was really interesting and the the
- 4:46magic tricks were insane and they were very clear about
- 4:50saying we're not an illusionist, we're a magician.
- 4:53OK, so nothing that we saw was a quote UN quote illusion.
- 4:56Were they lying? I don't know.
- 4:57They could have been. I I couldn't tell you what's an
- 4:59illusion? What's a magic trick?
- 5:01But it was pretty damn cool. Right now the schtick is Pen
- 5:05speaks, Teller does not speak. I know this from my, because
- 5:10I've seen them. They've these are people that
- 5:11have been like the same age since I was a child.
- 5:14They just always seem to have been the same age.
- 5:16Like they, they just keep coming back.
- 5:18They were on a lot of shows in the 90s.
- 5:19They had a, you know, that was kind of a big deal for them in
- 5:22the 90s. It drifts.
- 5:23They come in and out, but they they feel like they've just kind
- 5:26of always been around. Maybe that's part of the non
- 5:28illusion magic is that they continue to exist on this plane
- 5:32in a similar fashion. Yeah.
- 5:34I mean that that's, that's as good a guess as anything I would
- 5:37have come up with. So yeah, what was your They've
- 5:40lost none of their sass. They'll tell you Penn like, had
- 5:43fun and made fun of every person that came up on the the stage,
- 5:48including a six year old little Chinese girl.
- 5:51She was tasked with throwing a dart.
- 5:54And he goes, if you miss, you're a loser and you're a loser.
- 5:58And he said right to her. And everyone in the audience was
- 6:01just killing themselves laughing.
- 6:02And then they they show her face and she's just kind of like
- 6:05this. But then she started smiling.
- 6:07So it's like, OK, clearly the kids understand, everyone
- 6:10understood that when you go up there, you get roasted a little,
- 6:13a little bit of a roast, but it's all in good fun.
- 6:16And he would be like, it was just, it was absolutely
- 6:18hilarious. Like Rob and I were laughing the
- 6:20entire time. It was really super entertaining
- 6:23for the 125 bucks that we paid. It was, it was definitely worth
- 6:27the money and you would have loved it.
- 6:28It was an hour and a half. No longer.
- 6:31No intermesh. Run through.
- 6:32Entertain the folks, send them home.
- 6:34Now let me you now because we spent our time with Tim Dillon,
- 6:39you understand the inner workings of the Meridian Hall
- 6:42and you know that if you want to consume alcohol, the best place
- 6:45to go is down the stairs to the hidden bar that we found.
- 6:49Is that something you did? And did you purchase extra cans?
- 6:53Because you know, they frown on you getting up out of your seat
- 6:55as you remember from from the show.
- 6:57Did you, did you take any of those learnings from Tim Dillon
- 6:59here or did you consume anything at all?
- 7:01I took no learnings. In fact, what we did was go
- 7:04upstairs to the upstairs bar, which our seats were like on the
- 7:08main floor, but there was no line of upstairs funny and art.
- 7:11OK, yeah, I didn't even know that one.
- 7:12Remember. I remember the downstairs when
- 7:14we went to but and we found a weird door that kind of got us
- 7:18in at a weird angle that we we. Didn't even have.
- 7:20To wait to get in and out. We learned a lot at the Tim
- 7:22Dillon show about how the Meridian Hall is laid out and
- 7:25how traffic is all sort of run through that main floor with
- 7:29that main bar in the center, which is a chaos for everyone,
- 7:32so. It is.
- 7:33Folks going to Meridian Hall, take advantage of the
- 7:35extremities. We know the downstairs and you
- 7:37now learn the upstairs. So another new learning.
- 7:39Pretty good to apply in life. Yeah.
- 7:42Were you kind of jammed again in like a mid mid seats, like you
- 7:46know, they're really tight and close together or did you have
- 7:48an end? Seat because.
- 7:49You like an end seat? Amazing.
- 7:51Aisles with with the movie guy, it's always the aisle.
- 7:53Always. There's there's no option like
- 7:55he wouldn't, he would not go to the event if he couldn't get an
- 7:58aisle seat, do you think? I would.
- 7:59I would strongly wager that he would not even.
- 8:02Every time we go to the movies, it's the exact same seats every
- 8:05time we go to the movies. Whenever we go to a concert or
- 8:07comedy or magic In this case, aisle seats are key.
- 8:11It's aisle seats are bust, truly.
- 8:13Yeah. And I agree with that.
- 8:14By the way. I do too.
- 8:16I just like to know I can escape if I need to.
- 8:18I I feel kind of trapped and it takes away from my enjoyment of
- 8:22the experience if I feel a bit trapped cuz it's like what if I
- 8:25have to use the washroom or something?
- 8:27It's like it was like when we saw Lori's play and you're there
- 8:29and you're like the only washrooms on stage.
- 8:31There's no way we're going to be able to go.
- 8:32We're trapped here forever and then that happens too.
- 8:35It's just little psychological thing.
- 8:36It's not like blind panic, but it just crosses my mind.
- 8:39So it's like I always do like to have that aisle seat or I'll be
- 8:42one in I'm not an insane man. Like if you want the aisle and
- 8:46I'm one in, that's as good as an aisle for me.
- 8:48I agree. That's exciting.
- 8:50This is exciting to know we're we're learning more about the
- 8:52psychology of it. So before we leave this this
- 8:56magical experience, what was the best brick that you saw A.
- 9:01Man, probably he, they, this is 1 where teller.
- 9:05Of course the one that doesn't speak brought up a couple and
- 9:08they were both facing each other with panes of glass in front of
- 9:11their faces and the woman was given a marker and she traced
- 9:15the outline of her partner's face on the glass.
- 9:18They then took the glass put into a bag and smashed it all up
- 9:21into a million pieces, then took that same bag and put it into
- 9:25like this box of smoke and out came the reassembled.
- 9:30Exactly. Well, what I mean, obviously it
- 9:33wasn't exactly, I understand that This is why it's called
- 9:35magic, but it looked exactly like the sketch of the face that
- 9:39we saw get smashed like 2 minutes earlier.
- 9:42So both Rob and I were like, shit, that's pretty damn cool.
- 9:45Yeah. I wonder how that happened.
- 9:47We don't know and we're not meant to know.
- 9:48Because that we're not meant to know.
- 9:50In the world of magic. OK.
- 9:51Well, Eddie, parting thoughts for our audience on the Penn and
- 9:54Teller show that you want to communicate out.
- 9:57Yeah, I'm going to lean a little closer for this one.
- 9:59Yeah, if you get a chance to see it, see it.
- 10:01It's money well spent. OK, nice.
- 10:03Excellent. Seriously.
- 10:04I had a great time. That's awesome, that's great.
- 10:06Well, and on that, why don't we do shot #2?
- 10:08You're already doing it, which is great.
- 10:10We'll. Just question my first Jay, I
- 10:13was that that story. OK, more pre workout.
- 10:16Here's to you and our audience on a very busy Tuesday.
- 10:20Here's to you. And some water.
- 10:24Barry, what else did we want to talk about on this show?
- 10:26You had a you gave us a packed agenda because when you can, let
- 10:28me just say this for our audience, You may not know this
- 10:31after 200 plus episodes, but the T in Barry Teenix and stands for
- 10:35tidal wave of great content because that is what you always
- 10:38bring each and every episode. You're basically the showrunner
- 10:42for this show. Like you're like Penn and Teller
- 10:44tonight. And there's something else I got
- 10:46to talk about. I just can't remember what that
- 10:47is, but you know, and I'm excited to hear from you.
- 10:50I mean, and I'll just briefly touch on this.
- 10:52There was a Dundas St. festival called Due West, and that was
- 10:57over the weekend. Yeah.
- 10:58I don't think you would have enjoyed it, Jay, because it was
- 11:00absolutely rant. Like, if you like walking one
- 11:05tiny step in front of the other, in front of the other, and then
- 11:07watching to make sure you're not stepping on children, stepping
- 11:10on dogs, stepping on the disabled, then it might not be
- 11:13for you. Linda.
- 11:14I don't care about any of that. We just went and had some fun.
- 11:17You can kind of scurry off to the sidewalk where there is a
- 11:19little bit more freedom to move. But if you're standing in the
- 11:22Domain, like on the street between the vendors, yeah, just
- 11:25got to be patient, that's all. So it was like us at Fan Expo a
- 11:29couple years ago, basically shuffling.
- 11:31That's a shuffling. Yeah, yes, that's very good
- 11:34analogy. Absolutely.
- 11:35Yeah, it was very similar to that.
- 11:37You're you cannot be in a hurry when you're going to a packed
- 11:41St. festival in Toronto. Now, I will say we had some good
- 11:44pizza. So you would have enjoyed that.
- 11:45We had some pepperoni slices and a couple of Miller Lites.
- 11:49So that was nice. And but the biggest item that we
- 11:51saw that people were just going bananas for were all these
- 11:54skewers that had like either meat, fish or shrimp or
- 11:57something on them. But one guy was carrying like
- 12:00what looked like 2 bouquets, but they were skewered.
- 12:03There was like 4 in each hand like this guy.
- 12:05And he was as happy as you like. And I was like, no, that's
- 12:08somebody who's either got an eating disorder or is trying to
- 12:11pack in some protein or just too busy to sit down and want to
- 12:14just be able to eat and walk because that's the best food for
- 12:17that. Yeah.
- 12:18Anyway, it was it was a good time.
- 12:20That was Sunday when it was hot as hell.
- 12:21But it was, it was worth it. We enjoyed it.
- 12:23Yeah, that's great. And I did you notice at all if
- 12:27you were glancing left or right, maybe out of the corner of your
- 12:29eye was at any point did you notice a Bloomin onion on offer?
- 12:33No, no, quite interesting. But a lot of tacos, a lot of
- 12:37momos. I don't know if you're familiar
- 12:39with those. It's a Tibetan.
- 12:40It's a Tibetan food. It's like a little pouch of
- 12:44meat. And sometimes there's a little
- 12:46bit of soup inside if it's the boiled one versus the deep
- 12:49fried. Yeah.
- 12:50I can already see you recoiling. And this.
- 12:52This is no. It's called the no, no, that's
- 12:54me No, no on the Momo please. OK, yeah.
- 12:58So anyway, yeah, you would just blow right past that stand and
- 13:01every stand, it looked like that.
- 13:02But yeah, it was like standard stuff, right then people were
- 13:05selling soap. They were selling bracelets and
- 13:07and necklaces and some vintage clothing and of course, some
- 13:11counterfeit and World Cup jerseys were on offer.
- 13:13I don't support that, as you know, I don't support the
- 13:15underground economy at all, but yeah, at all.
- 13:19But, you know, I'm sure some people decided, hey, now's my
- 13:22chance to pick up my Uruguay jersey or whatever.
- 13:26Yeah. And then we walked home.
- 13:27We had a good stretch. It was like, probably, I don't
- 13:30know, we walked to like basically Dundas to land down.
- 13:33That was sort of where it ended. And then we just walked along
- 13:36Lansdowne all the way back home. It was beautiful.
- 13:38Interesting. And interesting that you chose
- 13:40to shuffle because I would have made my way.
- 13:43You're correct in saying I would have made my way to the sidewalk
- 13:46where it was open. Yeah.
- 13:48I wonder what is the psychology of that because I would assume
- 13:51everyone would want space. But to choose the shuffle is
- 13:54interesting. What goes to your head in that
- 13:56moment when you're about to choose shuffle versus clear?
- 13:59Clear. Path Well, the shuffle allows
- 14:02you to a check out every vendor, whether it be food or clothing
- 14:06or earrings or whatever. But there were also deejays
- 14:08posted up along the route, so that's where you would enjoy
- 14:11some music. We saw some people dancing.
- 14:13Did you get kind of a vibe? I did not.
- 14:15No, no. No you didn't.
- 14:17Shuffling and you kept shuffling along.
- 14:19It's. Like just shuffling, I guess
- 14:21it's a dance of sorts. Yeah, looks like the background
- 14:24is just moving slowly behind you while you shuffle.
- 14:26I'm just seeing you 2 shuffle. Yeah.
- 14:29Did you go shirtless at any point?
- 14:30Because I know you like that in the summer.
- 14:32I was very tempted, Jay, but it was it was just way too hot.
- 14:35I just, I was already, I'm already kind of gotten some
- 14:38color you can't really see now, but I already sort of had a bit
- 14:40of a red chest. I didn't want to add to it.
- 14:42And yeah, I don't know. I wore my England jersey,
- 14:44though. Everyone's wearing soccer shirts
- 14:46at the time of this recording. Obviously, this is the week the
- 14:48World Cup is kicking off. Yeah, everyone who has a soccer
- 14:52shirt of any description had them on at the Due West fest.
- 14:56That was one another thing I noticed.
- 14:57Excellent and check out our World Cup episode that we just
- 15:00recorded last week. It is now available on YouTube
- 15:03and on Spotify and wherever you get your podcasts.
- 15:05Barry, that's a great follow up to last week.
- 15:07Let's talk about this. Have you got your VIP pass yet?
- 15:11Has that been handed to you? Because I know the World Cup
- 15:13starts this week. Yes it does.
- 15:14At the time of this recording. I got an e-mail today saying the
- 15:18past is ready for pick up. Now I want to clarify something.
- 15:20I thought you're going to have to have two passes.
- 15:23One on your person, one on your car.
- 15:25False. One pass for your vehicle only
- 15:28perfectly. So you can move freely, you
- 15:31don't have to show this grass every time you come and go into
- 15:34the zone. It's strictly for driving I.
- 15:36Like it? Yeah.
- 15:37I like it, but I really like the idea of you having this pass.
- 15:40In fact, since you're you're not going to be moving the car very
- 15:43often, perhaps you could carry the pass with you and you could
- 15:46just show it to people. I guess I got my pass.
- 15:49That would be nice. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:52And then they're going to say it belongs in your car, pal, or on
- 15:55your bicycle or whatever. And you'll say my car is tucked
- 15:59away where it should be downstairs for the duration of
- 16:02this tournament. And I'm just showing you that I
- 16:05have access to get to it. I can get to where my car is
- 16:07parked in the VIP zone. Yes, with that pass.
- 16:11So I'm you know what, for the ease of movement, I'm glad you
- 16:13don't have to do that. For the practical side of it, a
- 16:15little bit of me kind of wishes you did have this VIP pass just
- 16:18so that you you could have told us about the experience of
- 16:22having to show up pass every time you came and went from your
- 16:24own domicile. Well, I'm still going to have
- 16:26that experience in the car because I intend to drive to
- 16:29visit my buddy Brad. This Saturday is when we're
- 16:31doing the big reveal to his son that we are going to see Germany
- 16:35and Ivory Coast in a week's time at the time of this recording.
- 16:38So I will still have that experience when I come home.
- 16:40There's going to be cops on the street.
- 16:42They will be stopping. In fact, what I've been told is
- 16:45they won't be stopping if they see the badge hanging from your
- 16:49rear view. If they see it, they're just
- 16:50going to way beyond through. We're going to stop you if you
- 16:52don't have any type of path, OK, We'll let you know how that
- 16:55goes. We'll all have it.
- 16:57Wave it. Outside the window if you could
- 16:58just like really wave it so you get their.
- 17:01Attention. Really let them know.
- 17:03Exactly, Barry, this is. I know you're not all that
- 17:06excited about World Cup, but may I ask you, will you be following
- 17:09any team at all? You got 48 to choose from.
- 17:13This is the biggest tournament on the planet and the most
- 17:16amount of countries involved ever in its history.
- 17:18You got 48 to choose from. Who you picking?
- 17:20Am I? Is Ireland playing?
- 17:22I'm part, I didn't. Make it?
- 17:23No, they didn't make it Hungary. Didn't have a team?
- 17:26Does Hungary have a team? Probably not.
