Speaker 2: be a little bit better as far as the traffic goes,
• 1:31
Speaker 2: but if you feel otherwise, you can, of course let
• 1:34
Speaker 2: me know about it. It was kind of a kind
• 1:38
Speaker 2: of difficult getting into town yesterday, but things seem to
• 1:41
Speaker 2: be going a little bit better to the smooth leavement,
• 1:43
Speaker 2: you know. We'll get into that a little bit later
• 1:44
Speaker 2: on the Chief of staff of the Mayor's Office, Matt Sutton,
• 1:47
Speaker 2: is going to join us to talk about that. On
• 1:49
Speaker 2: the way, I want to welcome into the show now,
• 1:52
Speaker 2: Attorney General JB. Mccusky. How are you, my friend?
• 1:54
Speaker 4: I'm great, Dave. How are you?
• 1:56
Speaker 2: You want to tell you want to talk about the
• 1:57
Speaker 2: conversation we were having off the air.
• 1:59
Speaker 4: Yeah, apparently there are no more words you can't say.
• 2:02
Speaker 4: Are not that part, which part, Oh gizmo button? Yeah, yeah,
• 2:06
Speaker 4: there is a button next to me that says gizmo button.
• 2:09
Speaker 4: And I wasn't allowed to push it, And as a
• 2:12
Speaker 4: forty three year old want to be six year old,
• 2:14
Speaker 4: it was very difficult for me to comply with that request.
• 2:17
Speaker 2: There are things in the studio that we still don't
• 2:19
Speaker 2: know what they are. And mister mccusky said, this is
• 2:22
Speaker 2: the kind of serious conversations we had before we go
• 2:24
Speaker 2: on the air. The Attorney General the State of West
• 2:26
Speaker 2: Virginia said, what does this button do that says gizmo?
• 2:28
Speaker 2: I said, I really don't know. Ryan knows what it does.
• 2:32
Speaker 2: I don't know what it does.
• 2:33
Speaker 4: You would have slapped my hand had you been sitting case.
• 2:35
Speaker 2: It may have activated balloons to come from the I
• 2:39
Speaker 2: will will never know.
• 2:39
Speaker 4: But there's a monkey with headphones on it, and I
• 2:41
  Speaker 4: want to.
• 2:41
Speaker 2: Push the butt slipperly a monkey with I never noticed that, Ryan,
• 2:44
Speaker 2: there's literally a monkey with headphones on the picture. It's gizmo.
• 2:49
Speaker 4: Uh you know, I just here we go the serious business,
• 2:52
Speaker 4: serious business, right, we are going to get to some
• 2:54
  Speaker 4: serious business.
• 2:55
Speaker 2: So what have you been up to lately?
• 2:56
Speaker 4: Well, yesterday I was one of the keynote speakers at
• 2:59
Speaker 4: the met Association. And for those out there, there's two
• 3:02
Speaker 4: kinds of coal. There's met coal, which we used to
• 3:04
Speaker 4: make steel, and steam coal. And in West Virginia we
• 3:07
Speaker 4: have a specific association just for the met coal producers.
• 3:10
Speaker 4: And I got to tell you, the vibes were high,
• 3:14
Speaker 4: and I think you know, one of the key messages
• 3:17
Speaker 4: I received from there is that coal is back, and
• 3:20
Speaker 4: people are real bullish about the market going forward, and
• 3:22
Speaker 4: they feel really good about steel making and manufacturing, not
• 3:25
Speaker 4: just in America but right here in West Virginia. It's exciting.
• 3:28
Speaker 2: And that's interesting that you said that, because I've heard
• 3:30
Speaker 2: other people in the coal industry saying, but now there's
• 3:32
Speaker 2: obviously a little bit the thing about the coal industry
• 3:35
Speaker 2: as well as the steel industry and these other industries.
• 3:37
Speaker 2: As we've always heard, it's on its way back, and
• 3:40
Speaker 2: sometimes it has. These markets are all about ebbs and
• 3:44
Speaker 2: flows and tides and whatever they go up, they go down, whatever,
• 3:47
Speaker 2: But it does seem to be a little bit more
• 3:49
Speaker 2: simp a sense of optimism this.
• 3:51
Speaker 4: Thirty years ago there were ninety four thousand coal miners
• 3:53
Speaker 4: in this country, and today there are forty five thousand,
• 3:56
Speaker 4: and that is a problem not just for our energy production,
• 3:59
Speaker 4: it's or our manufacturing and steel production. And I think
• 4:02
Speaker 4: we have a new pathway forward that has a more
• 4:04
Speaker 4: rational energy policy coming out of Washington, and the industry
• 4:08
Speaker 4: seeing that and they understand that, you know, natural resources
• 4:11
Speaker 4: and carbon based fuels are not just part of our
• 4:14
Speaker 4: president but will be a huge part of our future
• 4:16
Speaker 4: moving forward. And it's exciting to see.
• 4:19
Speaker 2: There been any concerns out of you and your office
• 4:23
Speaker 2: as it comes to doze and things that makes we
• 4:25
Speaker 2: saw what happen with Niosh in Morgantown, I mean, any
• 4:29
Speaker 2: concerns from you and them.
• 4:30
Speaker 4: So we actually have a legacy case that we are
• 4:34
Speaker 4: in trial in Lincoln County on about dust masks, and
• 4:39
Speaker 4: so you know, when we saw the Niosh stuff, you know,
• 4:41
Speaker 4: the president has broad authority to do these things, whether
• 4:44
Speaker 4: you like it or not. There's a kind of lawfair
• 4:48
Speaker 4: happening that I don't believe liberals will like to have
• 4:51
Speaker 4: happened the next time they have a president in office, right.
• 4:53
Speaker 4: I mean, if it is your argument that the president
• 4:56
Speaker 4: doesn't have control over the executive branch and how it
• 4:58
Speaker 4: spends its money, certainly that's going to make it much
• 5:02
Speaker 4: more difficult. And you know, we know there's going to
• 5:04
Speaker 4: be a Democrat president at some point.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: Do I know when that's going to be.
• 5:08
Speaker 4: I don't know when that's going to be either. It
• 5:09
Speaker 4: doesn't look like it's going to be in the gravely
• 5:10
Speaker 4: near future. But you know, I think one of the
• 5:15
Speaker 4: key lessons I learned from the legislator, and this is
• 5:17
Speaker 4: something that my mom taught me before she passed, is
• 5:19
Speaker 4: that every piece of legislation and every action you take
• 5:21
Speaker 4: in government, you ought to look through the eyes of
• 5:23
Speaker 4: your opponents and assume that that same tactic and that
• 5:25
Speaker 4: same thing is going to be used against a good point.
• 5:28
Speaker 4: And you know it is elections have consequences, and you
• 5:32
Speaker 4: know the president is allowed to do those things whether
• 5:35
Speaker 4: you like it or not. And you know, I'm glad
• 5:37
Speaker 4: to see the employees at NIOSH coming back. And I
• 5:39
Speaker 4: think that was always part of the plan. I think
• 5:41
Speaker 4: there was. You know, this idea that you can't cut
• 5:44
Speaker 4: government without cutting government is true, and if you are
• 5:47
Speaker 4: truly committed to making the government smaller and more efficient,
• 5:50
Speaker 4: you know that that isn't always going to be the
• 5:52
Speaker 4: easiest process. But I think the American people, especially those
• 5:56
Speaker 4: with children, are looking at our growing debt and are
• 5:58
Speaker 4: mounting expenses. I mean, and this is a bipartisan problem.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: I mean, the budget has been growing my entire life
• 6:04
Speaker 4: in a in a pace that far out paces our
• 6:06
Speaker 4: ability to afford it. And you know, it is interesting
• 6:10
Speaker 4: to watch. You know, you turn on the TV and
• 6:12
Speaker 4: you see the congress people and senators and stuff getting interviewed,
• 6:15
Speaker 4: and some of them are mad about it, and some
• 6:16
Speaker 4: of them are happy. But every single year we pass
• 6:19
Speaker 4: the budget, and every single dollar that gets spent has
• 6:22
Speaker 4: been approved by the federal government by Congress, and so,
• 6:25
Speaker 4: you know, it is it's interesting to see somebody actually
• 6:28
Speaker 4: sort of flip the dichotomy and actually take a bold
• 6:31
Speaker 4: step to truly make our federal government an appropriate size.
• 6:34
Speaker 4: And you know, I'm excited to see it, and I
• 6:36
Speaker 4: think the President has the authority to do so.
• 6:38
Speaker 2: Talking to him with Attorney General JB. Mccusky this past week,
• 6:42
  Speaker 2: you were in d C. And I understand you're going
• 6:44
Speaker 2: back to d C. But you were at the Supreme
• 6:46
Speaker 2: Court in this emergency hearing Trump versus you know, CASA, Yes, yes,
• 6:53
Speaker 2: and multiple others. And I'm not a lawyer here, so
• 6:56
Speaker 2: bear with me as best I understand the say the
• 6:58
Speaker 2: say to West Virginia find an amicus specifically questioning the
• 7:02
Speaker 2: legality of nationwide injunctions issued by district courts. I hope
• 7:07
Speaker 2: I explained that properly nailed it.
• 7:08
Speaker 5: What is the issue here?
• 7:09
Speaker 4: The issue here is that we have a system of
• 7:12
Speaker 4: courts in this country. We have three branches. Obviously everybody
• 7:14
Speaker 4: at three co equal branches, but the only one branch
• 7:18
Speaker 4: that doesn't really have the ability to enforce anything is
• 7:21
Speaker 4: a judicial branch, and so their authority is derived almost
• 7:25
Speaker 4: completely from the public's respect for their decisions. And the
• 7:30
Speaker 4: district courts are the lowest courts of the federal courts,
• 7:33
Speaker 4: and they are designed to hear cases and controversies. They
• 7:36
Speaker 4: are designed to hear court cases and criminal cases and
• 7:39
Speaker 4: things of that nature where there's a specific party in
• 7:41
Speaker 4: front of them and a specific party against them. And
• 7:44
Speaker 4: their rulings are designed to apply to the parties that
• 7:49
Speaker 4: are in front of them, not the entire country. And
• 7:51
Speaker 4: what we have now is a bunch of district court
• 7:53
Speaker 4: judges who are really stepping well beyond what I believe
• 7:57
Speaker 4: is their constitutional authority and issuing being nationwide injunctions as
• 8:02
Speaker 4: opposed to only issuing orders for the people that are
• 8:05
Speaker 4: in front of them. So let's say that you know,
• 8:07
Speaker 4: Bob sues Sandy, right, the judge is allowed to tell
• 8:10
Speaker 4: you can enjoin Bob from doing something to Sandy. An
• 8:13
Speaker 4: injunction is that telling somebody to stop doing something, And
• 8:17
Speaker 4: then if that is unconstitutional or illegal, Sandy has the
• 8:20
Speaker 4: opportunity to appeal that case to the circuit court. And
• 8:25
Speaker 4: then the circuit court has a much broader area with
• 8:27
Speaker 4: which they can bind people. In West Virginia, we're in
• 8:30
Speaker 4: the fourth Circuit and it encompasses the states around us.
• 8:33
Speaker 4: Then the circuit courts can either accept or deny what
• 8:36
Speaker 4: the district court said, and then if you don't like that,
• 8:39
Speaker 4: you go to the US Supreme Court. And the idea
• 8:41
Speaker 4: here is that we have to follow process.
• 8:44
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 8:44
Speaker 4: The courts are separate from both of the other two branches,
• 8:48
Speaker 4: and they are nonpartisan, and they are life tenured, and
• 8:52
Speaker 4: that is for a specific reason. That is to ensure
• 8:54
Speaker 4: that the public sees their rulings as being outside of
• 8:57
Speaker 4: the scourge of politics. And if we have district court
• 9:00
Speaker 4: judges that are going to start acting as though they're
• 9:03
Speaker 4: legislators and acting outside of their purview. The public's confidence
• 9:07
Speaker 4: in our court system is going to absolutely plummet, and
• 9:10
Speaker 4: that is a disaster, especially for people that believe that
• 9:13
Speaker 4: we are living in a world that is too hyper partisan.
• 9:15
Speaker 2: Talking again with Attorney General JB. McCuskey with Dave Allen
• 9:18
Speaker 2: Show and five Vidieline brought to you a part about
• 9:20
Speaker 2: Live Healthy was Forginia, presented by WVU Medicine. It's a
• 9:23
Speaker 2: podcast aimed at foster and healthier lifestyles. Great Resource Check
• 9:26
Speaker 2: have the latest episodes wv metronews dot com under the
• 9:29
Speaker 2: podcast Men, you start your journey towards better health. Today,
• 9:32
Speaker 2: I saw where you had joined with other Attorneys generals
• 9:36
Speaker 2: for a roundtable with law enforcement.
• 9:38
  Speaker 4: It's attorney's Attorney General.
• 9:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I said.
• 9:41
Speaker 4: Somebody texted that I got that wrong last time. Didn't
• 9:44
Speaker 4: you tell me that?
• 9:44
  Speaker 1: Yeah?
• 9:45
Speaker 4: I probably did get it wrong.
• 9:46
Speaker 2: Uh huh, it's not impossible. Okay.
• 9:48
Speaker 4: So we got to sit down and talk with General
• 9:50
Speaker 4: Bondi at the White House several of my other Attorney generals.
• 9:55
Speaker 4: As you said, and you know, there was a very
• 9:58
Speaker 4: broad discussion, but I had the opportunity to sort of
• 10:00
Speaker 4: tell West Virginia's story and to talk to the Attorney
• 10:03
Speaker 4: General about how, you know, the immigration problems and the
• 10:07
Speaker 4: the the fentanyl that is pouring across our border and
• 10:13
Speaker 4: is being really handled by so many law enforcement officers
• 10:17
Speaker 4: in places that aren't West Virginia. We are the end
• 10:20
Speaker 4: result of all of that crime. The drugs end up here.
• 10:23
Speaker 4: And so I got to sort of talk to her
• 10:25
Speaker 4: about our foster care crisis and the crisis we have
• 10:27
Speaker 4: with drug rehabit and the ways in which West Virginia
• 10:31
Speaker 4: has probably been affected by the drug scourge in this
• 10:34
Speaker 4: country as much, if not more than any other place
• 10:36
Speaker 4: in the country. And she was she really took some
• 10:39
Speaker 4: time to listen and understand that the work you're doing
• 10:42
Speaker 4: on the front end, finding these drugs at the border
• 10:45
Speaker 4: and finding these these folks who are are you know,
• 10:49
Speaker 4: they don't care about the health and safety of West Virginias.
• 10:51
Speaker 4: They're just trying to make money and finding them, getting
• 10:53
Speaker 4: them off the streets, getting them into jail, or getting
• 10:55
Speaker 4: them deported. It matters to the health and safety of
• 10:59
Speaker 4: not just West Virginia people, but really buy and large,
• 11:01
Speaker 4: the kids of West Virginia who need a better opportunity
• 11:04
Speaker 4: and I think it really gave her a great perspective
• 11:07
Speaker 4: on how important the job that the DJ is trying
• 11:10
Speaker 4: to do to clean this up is, even when the
• 11:13
Speaker 4: arrests themselves are not happening in West Virginia, but the
• 11:16
Speaker 4: drugs that the arrests are preventing are.
• 11:20
Speaker 2: Why are you suing Vermont?
• 11:22
Speaker 4: I'm suing Vermont because of like a syrup issue or
• 11:25
Speaker 4: what Yes, their syrup is. The labels are wrong, There's
• 11:28
Speaker 4: too many calories. You know, it's a big problem. You know,
• 11:31
Speaker 4: we make a lot of kidding. By the way, you
• 11:32
Speaker 4: know who the second largest maple syrup producer in the
• 11:35
Speaker 4: country is absolutely our maple syrup is just as delicious
• 11:38
Speaker 4: as Vermont's. And it doesn't come with a government that
• 11:42
Speaker 4: decides to find energy companies all around the country to
• 11:46
  Speaker 4: an unlimited tune.
• 11:47
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 11:47
Speaker 4: So what Vermont did is very much like New York
• 11:49
Speaker 4: what you and I talked about. They have decided that
• 11:52
Speaker 4: if you have been involved in the coal or the
• 11:54
Speaker 4: natural gas industry over the last thirty years, you have
• 11:57
Speaker 4: destroyed Vermont. I've been to Vermont several times. It is
• 12:00
Speaker 4: absolutely beautiful. It's lovely, it's beautiful, and their actions are
• 12:07
Speaker 4: intensely unconstitutional along with being kind of dumb, and so myself,
• 12:12
Speaker 4: along with twenty three other attorney generals and several interest
• 12:15
Speaker 4: groups have gone to Vermont and filed a lawsuit to
• 12:18
Speaker 4: find their their state law and constitutional. And again, you
• 12:22
Speaker 4: got to start looking at these things through the eyes
• 12:24
Speaker 4: of those who might use it against you. Right, does
• 12:26
Speaker 4: Vermont want West Virginia to start suing them for, you know,
• 12:30
Speaker 4: just random things or create laws that find that the
• 12:33
Speaker 4: people of Vermont over things that were done that were legal.
• 12:36
Speaker 4: And the answer that question is no, it violates federalism
• 12:40
Speaker 4: and every single action that every single one of these
• 12:43
Speaker 4: energy companies that they're targeting done was legal, regulated by
• 12:46
Speaker 4: the federal government. And we're really hopeful and really confident
• 12:50
Speaker 4: that our suit is going to be successful.
• 12:52
Speaker 7: Well, we let you go.
• 12:53
Speaker 2: You're in a Second Amendment fight now or you have
• 12:56
Speaker 2: bamb you're ramping it up?
• 12:58
Speaker 4: What's up with this which one, Dave? We're in a
• 13:00
Speaker 4: whole mess up. Have you talked about the one in
• 13:02
Speaker 4: DC or the one in Maryland.
• 13:03
Speaker 2: Let's go with the one in DC.
• 13:04
Speaker 4: Okay, So d C has decided And again, it really
• 13:09
Speaker 4: is bizarre to watch people intentionally violate court orders. But
• 13:13
Speaker 4: the United States Supreme Court has said that you cannot
• 13:17
Speaker 4: use a balancing test when you're creating laws around the
• 13:20
Speaker 4: Second Amendment, and DC has done exactly that, and they
• 13:23
Speaker 4: are trying to limit magazine sizes for guns in the
• 13:27
Speaker 4: District of Columbia. This is noticeably unconstitutional. It is against
• 13:31
Speaker 4: the rule of law that was created very recently, within
• 13:34
Speaker 4: the last three years. And we're leading a group of
• 13:37
Speaker 4: like minded attorney generals to make sure that DC isn't
• 13:40
Speaker 4: allowed to violate the Second Amendment because a violation of
• 13:43
Speaker 4: it anywhere is a violation of it everywhere.
• 13:44
Speaker 2: Okay, that was going to say so, but this is
• 13:46
Speaker 2: in d C. Why does it affect West Virginia.
• 13:48
Speaker 4: But it affects for West Virginia. I mean, the last
• 13:50
Speaker 4: time I checked, d C is about forty miles from
• 13:52
Speaker 4: the border of the Eastern Panhandle, and we have a
• 13:55
Speaker 4: whole myriad of people in West Virginia who feel pretty
• 13:59
Speaker 4: well compared to defend themselves when they travel out of state.
• 14:02
Speaker 4: So we are excited to defend the rights of the
• 14:04
Speaker 4: people in DC and along with the people of West
• 14:06
Speaker 4: Virginia who and everywhere in the country who want to
• 14:09
  Speaker 4: travel there.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: What else is on your mind? You got anything else

Speaker 2: you want to come? You know, the end of the
• 14:13
  Speaker 2: Memorial weekend, it.
• 14:14
Speaker 4: Is Memorial Day, the pool is going to open, summertime's coming,
• 14:18
Speaker 4: and the vibes are high. I think West Virginia is
• 14:21
Speaker 4: in a good spot. I feel really good about where
• 14:24
Speaker 4: we are and where we're going. And you know, I'm
• 14:26
Speaker 4: about five months into this office, and I can't tell
• 14:28
Speaker 4: you it is. It's just the most remarkable feeling every
• 14:32
Speaker 4: morning to wake up every day and know that the
• 14:34
Speaker 4: people of West Virginia, your clients. We got a lot
• 14:37
Speaker 4: of really cool cases coming up that we're getting ready
• 14:39
Speaker 4: to file. I can't wait to come back on and
• 14:40
Speaker 4: talk to you about them. And you know, the people
• 14:42
Speaker 4: in the office are super busy. I've been just running
• 14:44
Speaker 4: ragged and trying to spend as much time with my
• 14:47
Speaker 4: kids playing soccer and going to dance and doing all
• 14:48
Speaker 4: that other stuff you can and find a minute to
• 14:50
Speaker 4: have dinner with your wife every now and again. Life
• 14:52
Speaker 4: is good with my wife, not your wife. I would
• 14:54
Speaker 4: have dinner with your wife.
• 14:55
  Speaker 5: Your wife's lovely.
• 14:56
  Speaker 2: She's a lovely person.
• 14:57
Speaker 4: She appears to be a very good cook.
• 14:59
Speaker 2: Yeah, now, wait, a minute.
• 15:00
  Speaker 1: What does that?
• 15:01
Speaker 2: What does that mean?
• 15:02
Speaker 4: You've put pictures of the food on the internet. You
• 15:05
Speaker 4: actually look kind of skinny. You got your haircut. You
• 15:07
Speaker 4: look like you've maybe lost a little bit of weight.
• 15:09
Speaker 2: I've lost about twenty pounds.
• 15:10
Speaker 4: Good for you, Dave, Yeah, yeah, you're doing your Mountaineer mile. Yes,
• 15:14
  Speaker 4: that's good.
• 15:15
Speaker 2: As far as you know.
• 15:16
Speaker 4: I do the Mountaineer mile now three four times ago.
• 15:18
Speaker 4: You didn't need to, though, Well I did it something.
• 15:20
Speaker 4: I lost sixty pounds about six years ago. We had
• 15:24
Speaker 4: when we had our second kid. I decided that I
• 15:26
Speaker 4: was going to gain all the weight in the family
• 15:27
Speaker 4: instead of my wife.
• 15:28
Speaker 2: Nice of you, It was nice.
• 15:30
Speaker 4: And losing weight's hard, especially when you turn forty. All right,
• 15:33
Speaker 4: can't outrun that fork?
• 15:34
Speaker 2: Can you do? It's at Sometimes I don't want to.
• 15:37
  Speaker 5: I've tried.
• 15:38

• 18:07

• 18:10
Speaker 2: a a little bit of sarcasm there, Matt Sutton, chief
• 18:14
Speaker 2: of staff for the Mayor's Offices. Here hay Del buddy going.
• 18:18
Speaker 5: Good, speaking of sarcasm.
• 18:19
Speaker 2: Speaking of sarcasm, you got me. Well, that's good, and
• 18:23
  Speaker 2: there's worse people to have. I guess I can't think
• 18:25
Speaker 2: of one or off top my head.
• 18:26
Speaker 5: But you know, we took some time.
• 18:27
Speaker 3: We'd figure it out. So Day two, yeah, exciting. So
• 18:31
Speaker 3: we've got the time trials to start today. So that's
• 18:33
Speaker 3: just a canall boulevard, the paracycling time trials, the women
• 18:36
Speaker 3: Junior and the men Junior time trials. They started now
• 18:39
Speaker 3: about twenty five minutes ago and they'll wrap up sometime today,
• 18:42
Speaker 3: about twelve thirty or one. But you know, road closures
• 18:45
Speaker 3: today much less than they were yesterday. It's really just
• 18:48
Speaker 3: the boulevard and the streets that enter the boulevard, so
• 18:50
Speaker 3: you can't you're you're not getting on the boulevard much
• 18:54
Speaker 3: of today. And we did have some backup on a
• 18:56
Speaker 3: corkwory Avenue early this morning, cause I think people were
• 18:58
Speaker 3: avoiding the boulevard, but that got clear pretty quickly.
• 19:00
Speaker 2: So so if you get into if you get off
• 19:02
Speaker 2: into town, and let's just say, you know, you get
• 19:04
Speaker 2: off on Virginia Street like a lot of people do,
• 19:06
Speaker 2: and you pass W. SAZ and you're going down through,
• 19:08
Speaker 2: there shouldn't be any problems.
• 19:09
Speaker 3: There won't be any issues today unless you try to
• 19:12
Speaker 3: do a side street you're off to the boulevard. Yeah,
• 19:14
Speaker 3: if you're coming into town that way and you're coming
• 19:15
Speaker 3: through Virginia Street and you try to turn right onto
• 19:17
Speaker 3: the boulevard, you're gonna get stopped at some point, unless
• 19:20
Speaker 3: you're trying to get into sort of the County building
• 19:22
Speaker 3: of the city building where the parking garage is. But
• 19:24
Speaker 3: other than that, you're gonna be able to go free
• 19:26
Speaker 3: and clear down Virginia Street. Quarter Street will be good
• 19:29
Speaker 3: that way until Thursday evening when we start setting up
• 19:32
Speaker 3: for the Criterion races. They go through all downtown Charleston,
• 19:35
Speaker 3: and that is one of those ones on Thursday. Probably
• 19:38
Speaker 3: best if you know in that footprint that's kind of
• 19:40
Speaker 3: you know, the the boulevard, Summer Street.
• 19:43
Speaker 5: All the way, you know, Capitol Street all the way
• 19:45
  Speaker 5: through Hale.
• 19:46
Speaker 3: If you're in that footprint, you're going to want to
• 19:48
Speaker 3: get out of town before five, or hang out with
• 19:50
Speaker 3: us for the entire evening, or at least get your
• 19:51
Speaker 3: car out of the way, because if you remember the
• 19:54
Speaker 3: races downtown last year that starts Thursday and Thursday night
• 19:57
Speaker 3: Friday night, they they're so fast there's no way to
• 20:00
Speaker 3: get anybody in or out.
• 20:01
Speaker 5: We can barely get people to cross the street.
• 20:03
Speaker 2: That's the one thing. And I was talking to somebody
• 20:05
Speaker 2: about this yesterday, and again we're talking with the Mayor's
• 20:08
Speaker 2: office chief was staff Matt Sudden. But one of the
• 20:10
Speaker 2: things that amazed me last year, I was at Bar
• 20:13
Speaker 2: one on one doing a live broadcast on her sister
• 20:15
Speaker 2: stationed the Mountain last year during all while this was
• 20:17
Speaker 2: all going on, and I obviou seen bike racing on TV,
• 20:20
Speaker 2: but I've never seen it in person. I could not
• 20:23
Speaker 2: get over the speed of this. And I know that's
• 20:26
Speaker 2: the whole idea, but as we're standing there, we were
• 20:29
Speaker 2: standing right outside. It was a beautiful night. Last year,
• 20:31
Speaker 2: we were standing right outside Bar one on one and
• 20:33
Speaker 2: just again for lack of better just the speed of
• 20:37
Speaker 2: it all coming around that corner. Man, it absolutely blew
• 20:40
  Speaker 2: me away.
• 20:40
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean I think, I think.
• 20:42
Speaker 3: I you know, they kept telling us the speed right,
• 20:44
Speaker 3: they kept saying they're going to twenty third miles proud,
• 20:47
Speaker 3: They kept telling us that, and nobody really believed it
• 20:50
Speaker 3: until you actually felt it. And I think that was
• 20:51
Speaker 3: as much as anything else. Seeing it was one thing,
• 20:53
Speaker 3: But when they came by, if you're standing on the rail,
• 20:55
Speaker 3: you were feeling it. You could physically feel how fast
• 20:57
Speaker 3: they were going, and it was it was really insane.
• 21:00
Speaker 3: And then it just became so fun once you got
• 21:03
Speaker 3: to watch it and realized what was going on. And
• 21:05
Speaker 3: the nice thing is the cyclists are so nice. If
• 21:07
Speaker 3: they're not racing, they're watching them just like the rest
• 21:09
Speaker 3: of us, and they're more than willing to talk to you.
• 21:12
Speaker 3: Yesterday was fascinating. I mean, the paracycling, watching those folks.
• 21:17
Speaker 3: I was watching the I'm sitting there with a friend
• 21:19
Speaker 3: of mine watching the cyclists who do the hand cycling.
• 21:22
Speaker 3: You know, they're kind of laying on their back and
• 21:24
Speaker 3: they're doing doing the hand cycling. They've I passed out
• 21:27
Speaker 3: in about thirty five seconds trying to do that. I
• 21:29
Speaker 3: mean they, I mean I just the physicality that goes
• 21:31
Speaker 3: into the bike race is really impressive, and the athletic
• 21:35
Speaker 3: ability of the cyclists, and then just their their good
• 21:38
Speaker 3: nature of how awesome they've been to have in town.
• 21:42
Speaker 3: Yesterday was a fun day once we got through the
• 21:44
Speaker 3: traffic situation. But if you got to see it, you
• 21:46
Speaker 3: could kind of see what the what we were talking
• 21:48
Speaker 3: about yesterday because those hand cyclists are really low to
• 21:51
Speaker 3: the ground, and I think Chief Dempsey mentioned that, well
• 21:54
Speaker 3: you see it today too in the in the time trials,
• 21:56
Speaker 3: so they're hard to see. They're harder to see than
• 21:58
Speaker 3: the bike. So that was one of the issues. Just
• 22:00
Speaker 3: but once you know, we got cleared up about what
• 22:02
Speaker 3: one o'clock and then evening traffic was easy. Today, be fine.
• 22:06
Speaker 3: The next real big traffic issue will be Thursday evening.
• 22:11
Speaker 3: You know, in that four thirty five o'clock time frame,
• 22:13
Speaker 3: wouldn't it be time to time for people to leave work,
• 22:15
Speaker 3: get out of get out of town, or hang out
• 22:17
Speaker 3: with us more importantly.
• 22:18
Speaker 2: Yeah, and so again we do want to make sure
• 22:20
Speaker 2: people realize that if you're somebody that works downtown on
• 22:22
Speaker 2: Thursday evening and you worked till five o'clock, one of
• 22:25
Speaker 2: two things here. You probably want to either go to
• 22:27
Speaker 2: your boss and smile real pretty and say, hey, what's
• 22:30
Speaker 2: the chances of me leaving early? Or just stay go downtown,
• 22:33
Speaker 2: grab yourself a drink, grab yourself something to eat, visit
• 22:36
Speaker 2: one of the shops downtown and just hang out for
• 22:38
  Speaker 2: a while.
• 22:39
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean Thursday night races, the number of races
• 22:41
Speaker 3: they have, it's likely to go to eleven o'clock a
• 22:43
Speaker 3: little bit after that, and probably the same one Friday.
• 22:46
Speaker 3: So it's it's gonna be nice, you know. I will say,
• 22:50
Speaker 3: we'll hopefully get the weather out of the way this afternoon.
• 22:52
Speaker 3: Does look like we're going to get some pretty pretty
• 22:54
Speaker 3: good rain, maybe some wind this afternoon, probably after the
• 22:57
Speaker 3: time trials are over with today.
• 22:59
Speaker 2: Most of what I have, that's what I've heard and
• 23:01
Speaker 2: like brought Brian Hughes told me. It looks like it's
• 23:03
Speaker 2: going to be after five, after six, it looks like
• 23:06
Speaker 2: and look, you battled weather last year too.
• 23:09
Speaker 4: It's part of it.
• 23:10
Speaker 2: And these these athletes are used to battling everything from
• 23:13
Speaker 2: snow to wind, to rain to locusts. I mean they
• 23:15
Speaker 2: can handle everything, man.
• 23:16
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they did that Criterion race through downtown
• 23:19
Speaker 3: flying around those corners and it was raining last year
• 23:21
Speaker 3: and one of the races and the men's elite race,
• 23:22
Speaker 3: so it was it was again fun to watch. But yeah,
• 23:26
Speaker 3: I mean so, I think Thursday would be the one
• 23:28
Speaker 3: to kind of get your mind around. Other than that,
• 23:30
Speaker 3: you'll be if you're not on the boulevard, you'll be
• 23:32
Speaker 3: driving free and clear throughout town. But we do ask
• 23:35
Speaker 3: again you continue to keep your eye off for cyclists
• 23:37
Speaker 3: because they are out practicing and there are out riding around.
• 23:40
Speaker 5: And again it has sparked I think Chief said it yesterday.
• 23:42
Speaker 3: It has sparked local you know, people who ride bikes
• 23:45
Speaker 3: to get out and move around as well.
• 23:46
Speaker 5: When we were happy with.
• 23:47
Speaker 3: The crowd yesterday for the first day, and really expect
• 23:50
Speaker 3: them to start ramping up as the week goes along.
• 23:53
Speaker 2: The day Island showing five Any line brought to you
• 23:55
Speaker 2: a part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds.
• 23:57
Speaker 2: Birds are back at home the night over at gomart Ballpark,
• 24:00
Speaker 2: and so we'll take on a high point two dollars
• 24:01
Speaker 2: Tuesday with two dollar tickets, popcorn, hot dogs, and soda.
• 24:04
Speaker 2: Plus it's USA Cycling Nights, is it? Dirtybirds Baseball Dot
• 24:07
Speaker 2: com or their social media just goes to show you, Matt,
• 24:10
Speaker 2: everybody's getting involved in this bike the hashtag bike Bike
• 24:14
Speaker 2: City USA, Biketown USA.
• 24:16
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 24:16
  Speaker 3: I mean that's that's the point though, right, I mean
• 24:18
Speaker 3: I think, you know, I think Tim, Tim has said it,
• 24:21
Speaker 3: and I know the mayor has said it quite a bit.
• 24:23
Speaker 3: Like last year, we spent a lot of time on
• 24:24
Speaker 3: the logistics, and this year we have the logistics down
• 24:28
  Speaker 3: pretty pretty well.
• 24:29
Speaker 5: We'll always be able to learn and do better.
• 24:31
Speaker 3: We have the logistics down so we were able to
• 24:32
Speaker 3: add things this year and having the Bike Night, having
• 24:35
  Speaker 3: USA Cycling Night.
• 24:36
Speaker 5: Over the ballpark. You've got the watch parties going on
• 24:39
  Speaker 5: this weekend.
• 24:39
Speaker 2: There's a big event. Actually we're going to talk about this,
• 24:41
Speaker 2: I think later on Metro News Midday today. There's actually
• 24:43
Speaker 2: a big event happening at the Capitol yep. I think
• 24:46
  Speaker 2: on Saturday.
• 24:47
Speaker 5: Saturday is yeah, along with Vandalia.
• 24:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, with Van Dalia. So you got that going on
• 24:51
Speaker 2: and you're gonna be able to watch it. As a
• 24:53
Speaker 2: best understand, you'll be able to watch it from there.
• 24:56
Speaker 2: From the Capitol, Yep.
• 24:56
Speaker 5: You'll be able to watch there.
• 24:57
Speaker 3: You can go up towards Avenue and watch with those folks,
• 25:00
Speaker 3: and then you'll be able to go up to the
• 25:02
Speaker 3: Bridge Road shops in South Hills and be able to
• 25:04
  Speaker 3: watch up there.
• 25:04
Speaker 5: So there are a lot of like watch party areas.
• 25:06
Speaker 3: There's one right downtown on Capitol Street where you can
• 25:08
Speaker 3: kind of catch the start finish line. And then we've
• 25:10
Speaker 3: got live music and entertainment going on all the time
• 25:13
Speaker 3: in City Center starting on Thursday. So there's going to
• 25:17
Speaker 3: be a lot of places to watch. But to your
• 25:19
Speaker 3: point is it has become sort of much more spread out.
• 25:21
Speaker 3: Last year it was, you know, we had a couple
• 25:23
Speaker 3: of small events and then we had downtown. But this
• 25:25
Speaker 3: year it's been much more spread out, and we've seen
• 25:27
Speaker 3: the community join in because I think people just they
• 25:29
Speaker 3: appreciate it, they enjoy it, and it's something different. And
• 25:31
Speaker 3: you know, we've talked a million times and I know
• 25:34
Speaker 3: I have, but Andy Shay and his partnership at the ballpark,
• 25:37
Speaker 3: the ball team in the ballpark, anything that's going on
• 25:40
Speaker 3: in town, their game to partner with, and that's been
• 25:42
Speaker 3: a tremendous asset to us because not only does it
• 25:45
Speaker 3: help all of the events that we have, but it
• 25:47
Speaker 3: helps bring the team closer to the city, and I
• 25:50
Speaker 3: think they've done an amazing job with that, and that's
• 25:52
Speaker 3: one of the reasons they've had so much successes is
• 25:54
Speaker 3: integrating themselves much more in the community.
• 25:56
Speaker 2: There's a community event going on, the Dirty Birds are there,
• 25:58
Speaker 2: that's one of the things I like about it.
• 26:00

• 26:16
Speaker 2: before we let you go, because I know you're really busy,
• 26:18
Speaker 2: but you actually may be enjoying hiding out in here
• 26:20
Speaker 2: for a little while.
• 26:21
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think, well, the new studios are beautiful,
• 26:23
Speaker 3: but you don't get the hide a with the funds,
• 26:25
Speaker 3: you don't get the hide too much.
• 26:27
Speaker 5: But no, I mean, I think it's it really is.
• 26:29
Speaker 3: It's one of those things to where you know the
• 26:31
Speaker 3: USA Cycling team, not the cyclist, but the team that
• 26:35
Speaker 3: put on the event or just the pros of pros man.
• 26:38
Speaker 3: They know exactly what they're doing. They've got this down
• 26:41
Speaker 3: the Charleston Police Department working with them on the road closures,
• 26:44
Speaker 3: and then you know our team with Veranda and Tina
• 26:46
Speaker 3: and Andrew and Audrey and Sid and everybody who's working
• 26:50
Speaker 3: on it. Honestly, they make things. They make things pretty
• 26:53
Speaker 3: easy this year. I mean, we've got issues to deal with,
• 26:54
Speaker 3: but you know, we have a whole other things with
• 26:57
Speaker 3: the city, other issues with the city going on, and
• 26:59
Speaker 3: we've got to work on and being able to have
• 27:01
Speaker 3: a team that has really handled this and kept it
• 27:04
Speaker 3: very well organized has been very helpful for all of
• 27:06
Speaker 3: us involved. And you know, had city Council last night
• 27:09
Speaker 3: and we've got some more stuff going on today. So yeah,
• 27:12
Speaker 3: I mean the city continues to move, even with the
• 27:14
Speaker 3: cycling race in town, but it is a lot of
• 27:17
Speaker 3: work that goes into it. And you know, I think
• 27:20
Speaker 3: you know, somebody asked me yesterday when do you start
• 27:24
Speaker 3: preparing for next year?
• 27:25
Speaker 5: And I said, yesterday. I mean that's when we started
• 27:27
Speaker 5: to write. I mean, that's when you get going.
• 27:29
Speaker 3: It takes a long time to get into this, but
• 27:32
Speaker 3: we got really a really great team and really thoughtful
• 27:35
Speaker 3: and making sure that not only that balance between people
• 27:39
Speaker 3: not having the roads closed all the time, but having
• 27:42
Speaker 3: public safety be there. That balance is key and we've
• 27:45
Speaker 3: achieved it for the most part. We'll continue to tweak it,
• 27:47
Speaker 3: but feel really good about it. But the excitement builds
• 27:50
Speaker 3: as we get through the weekend and Thursday night, Friday night,
• 27:52
Speaker 3: and then the end of the Saturday, Sunday, Monday. It's
• 27:55
Speaker 3: going to be really fun in town and we're really
• 27:58
Speaker 3: looking forward to because I think that is the time
• 28:00
Speaker 3: where we really get the showcase Charleston off to the world.
• 28:03
Speaker 2: Before we let you go, I want to get a
• 28:05
Speaker 2: word in about the volunteers. Yeah, and how many people
• 28:08
Speaker 2: have volunteered for then you meet like a ballpark figure.
• 28:10
Speaker 3: I mean, I think I think they have over three
• 28:12
Speaker 3: hundred volunteers that we got people on our staff here
• 28:15
Speaker 3: that are that are volunteering just to go out and help.
• 28:18
Speaker 3: And I talked to a lot of volunteers when I
• 28:19
Speaker 3: was downtown last year. You don't pull this off without
• 28:22
  Speaker 3: without the volunteers.
• 28:23
  Speaker 4: No, you know.
• 28:23
Speaker 3: I spoke to a group of AmeriCorps individuals the other
• 28:27
Speaker 3: day who are in the education system, and they were
• 28:29
Speaker 3: in town and spoke with them and part of the
• 28:31
Speaker 3: thing we talked about was volunteers. And really, you know,
• 28:34
Speaker 3: you can't pull off any large scale event in this
• 28:37
Speaker 3: city or any city for that without volunteers. Everybody can't
• 28:39
Speaker 3: be paid, everybody can't be on staff, you can't have
• 28:42
Speaker 3: an attire. You know, your whole your whole city team
• 28:44
Speaker 3: out there working. So you have volunteers. And while you know,
• 28:47
Speaker 3: when you think about you know, in the Thursday, Friday
• 28:49
Speaker 3: and then the weekend where a lot of people are
• 28:51
Speaker 3: going to be hanging out at watch parties are having fun,
• 28:53
Speaker 3: there's going to be volunteers sitting by the street who
• 28:55
Speaker 3: they could be hanging out and having fun and eating
• 28:58
Speaker 3: downtown and enjoying a PoTA be but they're sitting there
• 29:01
Speaker 3: and helping make sure the event can occur at some
• 29:04
Speaker 3: place where there may not be a lot of traffic,
• 29:05
Speaker 3: or there may be, but they're the ones who are
• 29:07
Speaker 3: actually making sure this event could occur.
• 29:08
Speaker 5: So we thank them.
• 29:09
Speaker 3: I mean, you know, this CVB did an amazing job
• 29:12
Speaker 3: looking for volunteers. We can't do the cycling race with that,
• 29:15
Speaker 3: and we can't do regatta without it. It can't do festival,
• 29:18
Speaker 3: they can't do multifest. None of this can happen without
• 29:21
Speaker 3: tremendous community support, and I think we all know who
• 29:23
Speaker 3: live here. Like That's the one thing we have over
• 29:26
Speaker 3: when we go to compete for these events that we
• 29:28
Speaker 3: have with other cities is you know, with USA Cycling,
• 29:31
Speaker 3: we had a team of community volunteers that were there
• 29:33
  Speaker 3: the first day.
• 29:34
Speaker 5: It wasn't just Tim and the mayor.
• 29:35
Speaker 3: It was a team of community volunteers that were you know,
• 29:39
Speaker 3: Ted Arnbreck and Bradley Smaltzer and Oh, I'm gonna forget people,
• 29:43
Speaker 3: so I shouldn't have started naming naming folks Jack Hoblitzer
• 29:46
Speaker 3: and Eric Showalter and Todd dork Is and others who
• 29:49
Speaker 3: were there when we pitched this thing. And that's what
• 29:51
Speaker 3: really set us apart was we were ready to go
• 29:53
Speaker 3: with community, with community members who are ready to volunteer
• 29:56
Speaker 3: their time freely to be able to make these events
• 29:58
Speaker 3: happen when we compete with other cities, that is our
• 30:00
Speaker 3: tremendous advantage is our community and the people we have.
• 30:03
Speaker 3: So having those volunteers is extremely important. I know, are
• 30:07
Speaker 3: good friend Adam Harris, He's volunteering four or five days
• 30:09
Speaker 3: during this event, and he's just you know, kind of
• 30:11
Speaker 3: hanging out there at a corner and making sure that
• 30:13
Speaker 3: people don't cross when they when they're not going to
• 30:15
Speaker 3: cross a big part of them and it's a big deal.
• 30:17
Speaker 3: Or helping the cyclists with water. It's it really does
• 30:21
Speaker 3: take a true village to pull this off, and we've
• 30:24
Speaker 3: got one. And that's why we're able to have so
• 30:25
Speaker 3: much success with these events, and that's why we're able
• 30:27
Speaker 3: to get them and keep them, and that's why we'll
• 30:29
Speaker 3: be able to get the next one because, as we
• 30:30
Speaker 3: talked about yesterday, when the USA Cycling folks go and leave, yeah,
• 30:34
Speaker 3: they're going to talk about the city team, they're going
• 30:36
Speaker 3: to talk about the mayor support and the CVBS and
• 30:39
Speaker 3: working with the police department, but they're really going to
• 30:40
Speaker 3: talk about our community. And that's what allows us to
• 30:43
Speaker 3: get these events and has so much success with all
• 30:46
Speaker 3: the events we have in town. So it really is
• 30:48
Speaker 3: a true village that you know, puts this on. And
• 30:52
Speaker 3: we're just floored in Charleston and throughout West Virginia to
• 30:55
Speaker 3: be able to have the folks who are willing to
• 30:56
Speaker 3: help us do this because it is a time commitment
• 30:58
Speaker 3: out of their day when they could be doing other things,
• 31:00
Speaker 3: but they're they're helping our entire community. So a deta
• 31:03
Speaker 3: gratitude to all of them. And if you see somebody,
• 31:05
Speaker 3: I believe they're in green shirts this year, it says
• 31:08
Speaker 3: volunteer on the back, so you know who they are.
• 31:10
Speaker 3: Just shake their end, get read it.
• 31:13
  Speaker 8: Hey.
• 31:13
Speaker 2: One other thing for we let you go, not related
• 31:15
Speaker 2: to this event. You mentioned city council. I said, there
• 31:17
Speaker 2: was some discussion of PODA ex what came out of
• 31:22
Speaker 2: city council on So a few things with PODA.
• 31:24
Speaker 3: One is is just adherent with some the state change
• 31:26
Speaker 3: the laws a little bit as it relates to the
• 31:28
Speaker 3: length of license to the nonprofit head. So we had
• 31:30
Speaker 3: to conform the state law. But what the changes we
• 31:32
Speaker 3: made were really twofold. One was mostly related around cycling.
• 31:37
Speaker 3: One was we added holidays, state and federal holidays. We're
• 31:41
Speaker 3: going to treat like Saturdays and Sundays now from a
• 31:43
Speaker 3: time perspective, so instead of it going from four to ten,
• 31:46
Speaker 3: it's going to go from ten to ten. And that way,
• 31:49
Speaker 3: you know, we were thinking sitting here thinking about Memorial
• 31:51
Speaker 3: Day as this week is on Monday, and the regular
• 31:54
Speaker 3: PoTA rules would have said, okay, you can't start till four,
• 31:56
Speaker 3: and you can't and you got to stop at ten.
• 31:58
Speaker 3: And for those again races going on, is the.
• 32:03
Speaker 2: Designated areas where you can have a drink with following
• 32:07
  Speaker 2: the rules.
• 32:07
Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, so you can.
• 32:08
Speaker 3: You can get a if you have a POTO establishment,
• 32:10
Speaker 3: they have cups that they can sell your beer cocktails
• 32:12
Speaker 3: in and you can take it out into certain areas
• 32:14
Speaker 3: and you'll see the signs. But the big thing was
• 32:16
Speaker 3: is they've got you know, bridge Roads having parties warts
• 32:18
Speaker 3: Avenue in downtown, and we realized that they were going
• 32:22
Speaker 3: to start early because the races start early, so we
• 32:24
Speaker 3: needed to change the rules as it relates to that.
• 32:27
Speaker 3: So state and federal holidays will I'll be treated like
• 32:30
Speaker 3: a Saturday where the hours are ten to ten. And
• 32:32
Speaker 3: then we also city council gave the city manager some
• 32:35
Speaker 3: leeway to change the time the length of the duration
• 32:39
Speaker 3: of PODA for in very special events, one being Thursday
• 32:43
Speaker 3: and Friday, PODA ends at ten, but these races aren't
• 32:45
Speaker 3: going to end to eleven, So we're just extending those
• 32:47
Speaker 3: hours out a little bit to make sure that we're
• 32:49
Speaker 3: following our own rules as it relates to that. So
• 32:51
Speaker 3: that was those changes were really to deal with some
• 32:53
Speaker 3: of the special events. And you know it's is a living,
• 32:56
Speaker 3: breathing thing. It'll it'll tweak but as we go along.
• 32:59
Speaker 3: But it's been extremely successful. I know they started one
• 33:01
Speaker 3: over in the Elk City district of west Side that's
• 33:03
Speaker 3: getting going. They'll be utlizing that. But downtown and the
• 33:07
Speaker 3: Bridge Road Poda, we'll be kicking on this weekend and
• 33:11
Speaker 3: probably Thursday through Monday, and we need just need to
• 33:14
Speaker 3: tweak the rules a little bit to allow that to happen.
• 33:16
Speaker 2: Maryor Chief of staff Matt Sutton, appreciate you being here. Man,
• 33:18
Speaker 2: I get back out there.

  Speaker 12: Now.
• 38:00
Speaker 2: Last time he did mess up a little bit and say,
• 38:02
Speaker 2: but now he got it right this time. Man, I
• 38:07
Speaker 2: got a lot of texts to get today. Folks are
• 38:09
Speaker 2: active today, which is all good, Okay. Text says not
• 38:16
Speaker 2: much will be happening if Trump's tax cuts go through
• 38:20
Speaker 2: and add multi multiple trillions to the deficit over ten years,
• 38:23
Speaker 2: as forecasted by conservative economist. I will say this, and
• 38:27
Speaker 2: I'm certainly not an economist. I leave that sort of
• 38:30
Speaker 2: stuff up to the TJ. Meadows of the world. But
• 38:33

• 38:38
Speaker 2: but you can. You can agree or not disagree with
• 38:40
Speaker 2: Donald Trump. But I will say this, Donald Trump, if
• 38:46
Speaker 2: you look at his policies, are not very conservative. I
• 38:49
Speaker 2: mean just saying there. And if you are a true conservative,
• 38:53
Speaker 2: You're probably gonna have a little heartburn over a lot
• 38:55
Speaker 2: of Donald Trump's policies. But just saying tex says says JB.

• 39:31
Speaker 2: Tex says you all hear about the woman in Georgia

Speaker 2: who is brain dad and hooked up the live support

• 39:38
Speaker 2: support would violate George's anti abortion laws. That's the society
• 39:42
Speaker 2: conservatives are creating, says a Texter. I somebody in the
• 39:46
Speaker 2: office was telling me about that story yesterday. All right,
• 39:51
Speaker 2: So Aaron Parker has a story posted on the website
• 39:54
Speaker 2: this morning somewhat some of a bizarre story from the
• 39:57
Speaker 2: Spring Hills Cemetery. Investigators say there was a trailer driving
• 40:02
Speaker 2: on a very narrow, dead end road on Sunday and
• 40:05
Speaker 2: now he or she the driver, damaged a bunch of
• 40:07
Speaker 2: headstones up there, then simply left the trailer there and
• 40:12
Speaker 2: left in the truck. I mean just just left. The
• 40:15
Speaker 2: truck was licensed to a company out of Chicago. So
• 40:18
Speaker 2: this person somehow gets off on the wrong road I guess,
• 40:22
Speaker 2: tear us up a bunch of stuff and then unhooks
• 40:23
Speaker 2: the cab of the truck and just takes off in
• 40:26
Speaker 2: it like his or her bosses are not good to
• 40:30
Speaker 2: know that they somehow lost a trailer. Crews were called
• 40:35
Speaker 2: in to hook up the trailer and back it down
• 40:36
Speaker 2: the hill. Actually saw some video posted on one of
• 40:38
Speaker 2: the TV stations about that last night of them actually
• 40:40
Speaker 2: backing it down. It's a very bizarre story. Aaron Parker
• 40:43
Speaker 2: again has got the story posted if you'd like to
• 40:46
Speaker 2: read or see more about it over at wv Metronho's

• 41:01
Speaker 2: situation in Charleston, it does seem to be quite a
• 41:03
Speaker 2: bit better this morning, especially during the morning hours coming
• 41:06
Speaker 2: into town. And look, it's going to be that way
• 41:11
Speaker 2: until most of you head back to work after the
• 41:14
Speaker 2: Memorial Day holiday. You can't have an event like this
• 41:19
Speaker 2: and think you aren't going to have some delays. It's
• 41:22
Speaker 2: that simple. It's frustrating, I know, but the amount of
• 41:26
Speaker 2: money that this event is bringing in from the hotels,
• 41:30
Speaker 2: to the restaurants, to the shop. I feel it's worth it,
• 41:34
Speaker 2: and it's not going away. The event is going to
• 41:36
Speaker 2: be in Charleston for the next few years, and I feel,
• 41:39
Speaker 2: and I've said since day one, it's a good thing
• 41:41
Speaker 2: for Charleston. Not only Charleston, but the surrounding area. Is
• 41:44
Speaker 2: because we don't have enough hotels in Charleston to hold
• 41:46
Speaker 2: these people. So this helps out South Charleston, it helps
• 41:49
Speaker 2: out Tays Valley, it helps out all the other areas
• 41:51
Speaker 2: right here as well. For those of us that are
• 41:54
Speaker 2: in Charleston have to work downtown Charleston. It is a
• 41:57
Speaker 2: bit of inconvenience, yes, but having an event like this
• 42:00
Speaker 2: in Charleston is huge. And one of the things that
• 42:04
Speaker 2: always seems to surprise me is the number of people
• 42:08
Speaker 2: who simply don't know what's going on in their own communities.
• 42:14
Speaker 2: And that's not a Charleston thing. I mean, this seems
• 42:16
Speaker 2: to go on everywhere. When you have far more people
• 42:20
Speaker 2: concerned about voting on American idol as they have been
• 42:22
Speaker 2: for years than you do for president, you're gonna get that.
• 42:26
Speaker 2: And I hope that we do a good job, not
• 42:28
Speaker 2: only us, but the other media entities here in the
• 42:32
Speaker 2: Charleston air I hope we do a good job of
• 42:34
Speaker 2: trying to keep you informed on air and online, but
• 42:36
Speaker 2: sometimes people just choose not to be informed. And there's
• 42:43
Speaker 2: a big event in Charleston. I saw people posting about
• 42:45
Speaker 2: it yesterday saying what's going on? I mean, how could
• 42:49
Speaker 2: you not know this? It's been everywhere. But there's a
• 42:55
Speaker 2: lot more going on in Charleston this week too. Live
• 42:56
Speaker 2: on the Levee starts later this week. You got high
• 42:59
Speaker 2: school graduation, mentioned the run.
• 43:01
  Speaker 6: For the Wall.
• 43:02
Speaker 2: Uh, it's a good problem to have, you know, I
• 43:07
Speaker 2: mean that you have to that you got all these
• 43:10
Speaker 2: things going on. I think it's a good problem to have,
• 43:11
Speaker 2: kind of like roundabouts in Putnam County.
• 43:14
Speaker 11: You you just have, in my.
• 43:16
Speaker 2: Opinion, a section of the population that just lives to
• 43:20
Speaker 2: complain about something, And Hey, who's this me? I'm complaining
• 43:24
Speaker 2: about them right now. So there's that. Like the woman
• 43:28
Speaker 2: on the Charleston Convention of Visitors Bureau Facebook page who
• 43:31
Speaker 2: said there's nowhere to eat in Charleston. I suppose that
• 43:37

• 47:11
Speaker 2: very very good point by the Texter. I do appreciate that.
• 47:14
Speaker 2: I'm hoping that we don't have people voting up to
• 47:16
Speaker 2: ten times. We used to do that in West Virginia,
• 47:18
Speaker 2: especially southern West Virginia where I'm from, but we don't
• 47:21
Speaker 2: do that anymore. I hope actually we don't. Voter fraud
• 47:25
Speaker 2: is you hear the occasional case every now and then
• 47:28
Speaker 2: here in West Virginia in other areas, but it's usually
• 47:31
Speaker 2: blown way out of proportion, and not the cases themselves.
• 47:34
Speaker 2: They're very serious, but they are very very few and
• 47:37
Speaker 2: far between. Okay, so it's a text with this money

Speaker 2: I'm watching an Elon interview on Bloomberg. The stock ticker
• 47:52

• 47:54
Speaker 2: Launera speaks the guy who ruined his image and alienated
• 47:57
Speaker 2: his based customers for Trump, and Trump's going to eventually
• 48:00
Speaker 2: up him terrible deal. I was watching an article, or
• 48:02
Speaker 2: watching an article. I was watching a piece on the
• 48:04
Speaker 2: news the other day about Elon Musk, who's kind of
• 48:06
  Speaker 2: gone silent.
• 48:08
  Speaker 6: Uh.
• 48:08
Speaker 2: Trump administration has not been touting him as a golden
• 48:11
Speaker 2: boy a lot here lately, for one reason or another.
• 48:15
  Speaker 2: I don't know if that's by design they have. I
• 48:17
Speaker 2: don't know if Doge wasn't turned out to be what
• 48:21
Speaker 2: they thought it was going to be. But uh, you know,
• 48:23
Speaker 2: I could be wrong, But what I saw on this piece,
• 48:25
Speaker 2: I mean they've Trump administrations have been distancing themselves from
• 48:28
Speaker 2: Elon here as of late. Tex says, I'm the cemetery
• 48:32
Speaker 2: truck driver. I'd like to know where he knew he
• 48:34
Speaker 2: made a wrong turn. Those roads in that cemetery are
• 48:36
Speaker 2: barely big enough for a pickup truck, well one way
• 48:38
Speaker 2: or the other. If you take a truck up there,
• 48:42
Speaker 2: a semi truck and you wreck it. It kind of
• 48:46
Speaker 2: reminds me, because I get I take every opportunity I
• 48:50
Speaker 2: can to put a Caddyshack reference in there. It kind
• 48:52
Speaker 2: of reminds me at the end of Caddy Shack and TJ.
• 48:56
Speaker 2: Meadows is in the studio right now I know that
• 48:59
Speaker 2: you're a Caddyshack. It's the greatest movie ever made. At
• 49:02
Speaker 2: the end of Caddyshack when when they blow up, when
• 49:05
Speaker 2: Bill Murray blows up the call golf course trying to
• 49:08
Speaker 2: kill the gopher, and he puts simply puts his flamethrower
• 49:11
Speaker 2: down and walks away like nothing never happened. I'm not
• 49:15
Speaker 2: trying to make light of it, but that's what it
• 49:17
Speaker 2: seems like happened with the cemetery story. Was the guy
• 49:20
Speaker 2: basically or the person did this and then unhooked their
• 49:24
Speaker 2: trailer and just jumped in the cab of the trump
• 49:26
Speaker 2: and took off, And I guess thought nobody would know
• 49:28
Speaker 2: me that they had overturned some headstones and whatever up there. Now,
• 49:33
Speaker 2: I've seen a lot of information about this online. I
• 49:37
Speaker 2: will say that, and I don't know how much of
• 49:40
Speaker 2: it is true. That's why I'm not repeating it. The
• 49:42
Speaker 2: police have not released a lot of information about that.
• 49:44
Speaker 2: I've read the same articles that you are about the driver,
• 49:47
Speaker 2: and but until it becomes official from the police department,
• 49:51
Speaker 2: we're not going to talk about it on this showntil
• 49:53
Speaker 2: we get an official statement from the police, as they say,
• 49:56
Speaker 2: how you doing. Man, I'm good.
• 49:57
Speaker 10: I'm not casting a light on all truckers. But when
• 50:01
Speaker 10: I was in the fueling business, had one roll over
• 50:04
Speaker 10: some ballards that were near a pump.
• 50:08
Speaker 2: I've got video of it. There is no way, no way.
• 50:13
Speaker 8: It was a guy.
• 50:13
Speaker 2: This guy didn't understand he had done that, just kept
• 50:17
Speaker 2: read on a truck.
• 50:18
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 50:19
Speaker 2: But uh, And unfortunately, when you hear these stories TJ,
• 50:21
Speaker 2: it it casts a negative light on all truckers. And
• 50:23
Speaker 2: that's certainly, certainly not certainly, we do have a big problems.
• 50:28
Speaker 2: We have a big well, we have a big problem
• 50:30
Speaker 2: in this country too with with more and more drivers.
• 50:32
Speaker 2: And we've talked about it on the Midday Show with
• 50:35
Speaker 2: folks from the trucking industry that that can't speak English.
• 50:37
Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to be you know, I'm not
• 50:39
Speaker 2: trying to appear to be racist or anything. I'm just
• 50:41
Speaker 2: saying it's a fact that if you're going to drive
• 50:42
Speaker 2: on the roads, you should be able to read the
• 50:43
Speaker 2: signs and and and many and the and the rules
• 50:46
Speaker 2: have been relaxed so much to allow for this because
• 50:50
Speaker 2: we don't have truckers anymore, and the and the freight's
• 50:53
Speaker 2: got to move and so that's kind of where we are.
• 50:55
Speaker 2: Either that or have signs that are bilingual. One of
• 50:58
Speaker 2: the two, and that would really go overwhill. Yeah, that
• 51:01
Speaker 2: wouldn't it? Yeah, that would really go And what language
• 51:03
Speaker 2: are you gonna choose? You can't be bilingual, you gotta
• 51:05
Speaker 2: be try or quad or something.
• 51:06
Speaker 10: You ever spend a time in Canada, that's everything's at
• 51:08
Speaker 10: French and English. I have when I was a kid
• 51:10
Speaker 10: of a boy, we spent some time in Canada.
• 51:13
Speaker 2: I remember it. Well, all right, what you got on
• 51:15
Speaker 2: the show today, buddy.
• 51:17
Speaker 10: So coming up at eleven oh six, Howard Monroe is
• 51:20
Speaker 10: going to join us from The Watchdog in Wheeling, a
• 51:23
Speaker 10: Metro News affiliate. We're gonna talk a little bit about
• 51:25
Speaker 10: Joe Biden in that diagnosis, get more into the politics
• 51:29
Speaker 10: of it's who knew what kind of like what we
• 51:31
Speaker 10: did with you yesterday, and chew the fat. Howard has
• 51:34
Speaker 10: some perspectives on that. Also coming up from the West
• 51:39
Speaker 10: Virginia Center for Budget and Policy, Kelly Allens. She has
• 51:41
Speaker 10: a breakdown of the big beautiful bill, okay and how
• 51:43
Speaker 10: it will affect West Virginians. Brad McLean in the house
• 51:46
Speaker 10: at ten thirty three. We'll talk to a I guess
• 51:51
Speaker 10: you would call him a urologist and robotic surgeon. Okay,
• 51:54
Speaker 10: from Mond Health about prostate cancer, what we need to
• 51:58
  Speaker 10: be doing.
• 51:59
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, sounds good. I mean that doesn't sound good.
• 52:02
Speaker 8: No, not at all.
• 52:02
Speaker 2: The information will be good. Gotta get our check up. David,
• 52:05
Speaker 2: you and I were getting older. I'm aware I'm ten
• 52:08
Speaker 2: years older than you, remember that, right, but I'm not.
• 52:10
Speaker 2: You know you're healthier than night. Yeah, I'm not. Uh,
• 52:12
  Speaker 2: you're a specimen. I'm very cranky is what I am.
• 52:15
Speaker 2: The base of what they tell me. All Right, gotta go,
• 52:17
Speaker 2: I'll see you later today Metro News Midday powered my
• 52:19
