- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good Morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day. To record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some joy.
- 0:20Into the. World.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody, good morning.
- 0:30So I want to share a story with you today about my mom.
- 0:34I learned my love of animals from my mom, no doubt about it.
- 0:40She was the person that taught me to bring home stray animals.
- 0:43She was the person that taught me to rescue things from the
- 0:47middle of the road and she was the person who really gave me a
- 0:51love of birds, like just bird, the birds that you feed in your
- 0:54yard. Not not photographing him.
- 0:56She never went out and photographed him like I do.
- 0:58However, she definitely taught me about having the the wild
- 1:03birds and feeding them and we always had a bird feeder.
- 1:06I don't ever remember my life not having a bird feeder unless
- 1:10I was living in a condo. I had bird feeders and they were
- 1:13always out and about, like they were filled with, you know,
- 1:16busy, busy central places. My mom always had I think 3 main
- 1:22setups and then some smaller ones.
- 1:24But, you know, we lived up north and you rarely got like the
- 1:28exotic birds. And she used to talk about how
- 1:30she would love to have Bluebirds, but you just never
- 1:33got them. Where we lived.
- 1:34One of the first things when we moved S that I noticed was this
- 1:39was a big bird on the list. Like you can see Bluebirds
- 1:42regularly. And so it became my thing of
- 1:45saying, OK, I really would love to have Bluebirds.
- 1:48I would love to figure out how to have the Bluebirds.
- 1:51And when we just, you know, even when we were in our rental unit,
- 1:55you know, it was that rental house, but it was still a rental
- 1:57unit. I put out bird feeders and I did
- 2:00not get Bluebirds. I got lots of other birds, but I
- 2:03did not get Bluebirds. So when we moved out to the
- 2:06farm, one of the very first things that I was very busy
- 2:10doing was cultivating. What do they need?
- 2:12What do they need in order to thrive?
- 2:15And they're very specific. They like to have, they're very
- 2:18territorial. They like to have a place where
- 2:21they can nest, where they have a tree as well.
- 2:24Like they, they want a nest in a nest box.
- 2:26So if you put out a nest box, they will definitely use them.
- 2:29And then they want these trees that give them a lot of cover,
- 2:32and then they want to be able to have a food source and a water
- 2:35source. And if these are all in a
- 2:37triangle, right? Like this is their code for
- 2:39thriving. If they're all in a triangle and
- 2:43they can easily access all of them, they will come and they
- 2:46will stay. So the first year out here, we
- 2:49put up 1 Bluebird box on a, on a post and it was in, in between
- 2:55the house, the garden and the this Big Y, we call it the Y
- 2:59oak, but it's a Live Oak and it comes out and it spreads like
- 3:02AY. And it was really crushed when
- 3:04we moved into the, when we first purchased the property because
- 3:08all the other trees around it, the scrub trees were taking
- 3:11advantage of it. And live hooks are phototropic,
- 3:14so they grow out where they get sun.
- 3:16So as long as they can stretch out and the sun is there, they
- 3:19will continue to grow. So we stripped out the trees
- 3:23around it. We gave it an opportunity.
- 3:25We put out the post and we put out a bird feeder.
- 3:28And lo and behold, we had a couple, just just a boy and a
- 3:32girl moved in to that little house, a Bluebird.
- 3:35And I could not have been more excited.
- 3:36And it was, it was just unbelievable that this happened.
- 3:40So, you know, they had their babies and they would bring
- 3:43their babies to the feeder and we would get to see them.
- 3:46And I would sit and I would cry and I would be like, oh, I know
- 3:48my mother's watching this and she's having so much fun that we
- 3:52have Bluebirds. Well, Fast forward, we now have
- 3:56our three Bluebird houses. They can be territorial, so you
- 4:01have to be very careful about how many houses you put out.
- 4:03But we have 3 right now. And we have so many Bluebirds
- 4:10that are here. Now.
- 4:11Here's what's really cool. These are all Bluebirds that
- 4:13were born on this farm. And it's amazing to me how many
- 4:18times they will have nests in a season.
- 4:22So this season we are working on one the the box.
- 4:26The original box that we put up has now got its fourth nest in
- 4:31it, and I can't tell because they all look the same.
- 4:34Obviously. I can't tell you if they're the
- 4:36same parents doing it over and over or they're different
- 4:39parents doing it over and over and they move in.
- 4:41But even as I'm talking to you right now, it's very early
- 4:45morning and they are, there's a couple in the ones on the dad's
- 4:49on the top, mom's inside. I don't know if they've got eggs
- 4:52or whatnot yet, but I can usually when when the babies
- 4:56hatch, we can hear them screaming and they go and they
- 4:59go right to the bird feeder in which I give them the perfect
- 5:03thriving food, which is they love freeze dried mealworms
- 5:06because it's nothing but protein for them.
- 5:08So I order them online and they're a hot hell of a lot less
- 5:12expensive than when you buy them at stores.
- 5:13But I order them in huge batches.
- 5:16I buy like 11 pounds, 12 lbs at the same time.
- 5:20So it's a bunch. But I'm sitting here, I'm
- 5:22talking to you and at the bird feeder right now, I can count
- 5:25about 22 Bluebirds on the flight deck where they have all of
- 5:30their freeze dried mealworms and males, females, big ones, small
- 5:34ones. So I know there are juveniles in
- 5:36there. Some of them are still kind of
- 5:38grayish in color. There's so many Bluebirds here.
- 5:42And again, this is because it's a thriving environment for them.
- 5:46They're also really, really very territorial protectors of their
- 5:51space. So when Hawks come in or birds
- 5:55come in that are very detrimental, the male Bluebirds
- 5:58will scream and protect their territory, which alerts the
- 6:00chickens. So little different than the
- 6:03crows. The Bluebirds do not care about
- 6:05the chickens, but the crows will definitely dive bomb and help
- 6:08the chickens. So it's very interesting.
- 6:10But in any event, the purpose of me telling you this today is
- 6:14this is such a, a spot of joy for me to come out and see them
- 6:18all out here in the morning looking at I probably got about
- 6:2210 different kinds of birds right now.
- 6:24I've got a summer tanninger, I've got Cardinals, I've got
- 6:28house runs, I've got Bluebirds, Blue Jays.
- 6:31I mean, so many different, all different kinds of warblers.
- 6:35There's so many out here. Painted buntings have been
- 6:38showing up all summer long. So I mean, they're stuck running
- 6:43and such a treat to have, but my Bluebirds are my special thing.
- 6:47And it's in honor of the fact that I feel like we gave them
- 6:51the perfect environment to thrive in and they just come and
- 6:54thrive and they thrive so much. They keep bringing their kids,
- 6:57so next year there's going to be a whole push for putting on a
- 7:00couple more houses. I'm going to try to put them a
- 7:02little further out and see if that gives them more space and
- 7:06see what happens. But I wanted to share with you
- 7:08just this, like, little achievement.
- 7:10It's so seemingly so simple. Create something for something
- 7:15else to thrive. And then you feel amazing
- 7:17because I got to tell you, this makes me feel like a rock star.
- 7:21And it might just be birds, but let me tell you, it really does
- 7:24when you see them bringing their babies to the feeder and feeding
- 7:27them, boy that is just the best. So I hope you guys have a
- 7:31blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 7:33Bye.
