Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Pimoja Ministry. In our first conversation,
- 0:06we asked a difficult question. What if the intervention
- 0:09was about you? What if, while you are asking
- 0:12God to change what was happening around you,
- 0:15God was using the situation to change something
- 0:18within you? We discovered that sometimes the
- 0:21greatest testimony of the fire is not simply,
- 0:24God brought me out. Sometimes the greater testimony
- 0:27is, Look at what God brought out of me through
- 0:30the fire. But that leads us somewhere deeper.
- 0:33Because before something can be removed, it must
- 0:36first be revealed. And sometimes there are things
- 0:39inside us that we cannot see while everything
- 0:42is going well. Success can hide them. Comfort
- 0:46can hide them. Position can hide them. Money
- 0:50can hide them. Applause can hide them. Even ministry
- 0:54can hide them. But pressure has a way of bringing
- 0:57hidden things to the surface. And maybe that
- 1:00is another reason God allows the fire. The fire
- 1:04reveals what success can hide. There is something
- 1:09important we must understand about pressure.
- 1:12Pressure does not always create the reaction.
- 1:15Sometimes pressure simply reveals what was already
- 1:18there. If I squeeze an orange, an orange juice
- 1:22comes out. The pressure did not create the juice.
- 1:25The pressure revealed what the fruit contained
- 1:28and life can work the same way. Someone offends
- 1:32you and suddenly anger comes out. Someone challenges
- 1:36your authority and pride appears. Someone receives
- 1:39something you wanted and jealousy rises. Someone
- 1:42misunderstands you and immediately you feel the
- 1:45need to defend yourself. God makes you wait and
- 1:49impatience begins speaking. A door closes and
- 1:53suddenly Your faith becomes unstable. Someone
- 1:57criticizes you, and words come out of your mouth
- 1:59that surprise even you. We often say, look what
- 2:03they made me do. But perhaps the more important
- 2:06question is, why was that reaction available
- 2:09inside me? The person may have provoked you.
- 2:13The situation may have been unfair. The treatment
- 2:16may have been wrong. But the fire may have revealed
- 2:20something that still needs God's attention inside
- 2:22you. That does not excuse what someone else did.
- 2:25It simply refuses to allow someone else's wrongdoing
- 2:29to prevent us from examining ourselves. That
- 2:31is maturity. To know what was in your heart,
- 2:35Deuteronomy 8 2 says, remember how the Lord your
- 2:38God led you all the way in the wilderness these
- 2:4140 years to humble and test you in order to know
- 2:44what was in your heart. That scripture is extraordinary.
- 2:49The wilderness was not merely about destination.
- 2:51It was also about revelation. God was revealing
- 2:55Israel to Israel. They had witnessed miracles.
- 2:57They had watched the Red Sea open. They had seen
- 3:00Pharaoh defeated. They had experienced supernatural
- 3:03deliverance. But miracles do not automatically
- 3:06produce maturity. You can experience the power
- 3:09of God and still have areas of your character
- 3:12that require transformation. Israel had left
- 3:15Egypt. But under pressure, Egypt began appearing
- 3:18in their conversations. When they became hungry,
- 3:21Egypt appeared. When they became thirsty, Egypt
- 3:24appeared. When Moses stayed too long on the mountain,
- 3:28Egypt appeared. Whenever circumstances became
- 3:31uncomfortable, they started remembering the place
- 3:34from which God had delivered them. Why? Because
- 3:37although they were geographically outside Egypt,
- 3:40there were still things inside them that had
- 3:43been shaped by Egypt, and the wilderness exposed
- 3:46them. There are moments when one of God's greatest
- 3:53revelations is not a revelation about somebody
- 3:55else It is a revelation about you and that revelation
- 3:59can be uncomfortable Because we usually know
- 4:02ourselves according to our intentions God knows
- 4:05us according to what is actually inside our hearts
- 4:08We say I would never do that until the right
- 4:11circumstances arrive We say money could never
- 4:14change me until money arrives. We say power would
- 4:17never change me until authority arrives we say
- 4:21I don't care what people think about me until
- 4:24people stop applauding we say I have forgiven
- 4:27them until their name comes up again we say I
- 4:31trust God until God doesn't answer according
- 4:33to our timetable and sometimes God allows circumstances
- 4:37that reveal the difference between who we believe
- 4:39ourselves to be and who we actually are not to
- 4:43condemn us to refine us because you cannot surrender
- 4:46something you refuse to recognize. We often talk
- 4:53about surviving adversity, but Scripture also
- 4:56warns us about surviving success. Deuteronomy
- 4:598 does something fascinating. God warns Israel
- 5:03that after the wilderness there will be houses,
- 5:06food, land, increase, prosperity, and then Moses
- 5:10warns them, Do not forget the Lord. Why? Because
- 5:13sometimes the wilderness makes you pray in ways
- 5:16prosperity does not. Need keeps you dependent.
- 5:20Success can make you believe you have become
- 5:22self -sufficient. When everything is falling
- 5:25apart, we often know we need God. But what happens
- 5:29when everything starts working? When people know
- 5:31your name? When the ministry grows? When your
- 5:34influence expands? When your financial condition
- 5:38changes? When you become the person giving instructions
- 5:41instead of receiving them? when doors begin opening.
- 5:44That is another kind of test. Sometimes adversity
- 5:48reveals weakness. Success reveals character.
- 5:52This is especially important in the Kingdom of
- 5:55God. A gift can function while character is struggling.
- 5:59Someone can preach and still have unresolved
- 6:02anger. Someone can sing beautifully and still
- 6:05struggle with pride. Someone can lead and still
- 6:08have unhealthy appetites. Someone can pray powerfully
- 6:11and still lack discipline. Someone can understand
- 6:14scripture and still mistreat people. Someone
- 6:17can carry tremendous influence while privately
- 6:19becoming spiritually weak. And because the gift
- 6:22continues functioning, we can mistakenly assume
- 6:25everything is fine. But God's gifts should never
- 6:29become evidence that we no longer need refinement.
- 6:32The gift can attract people. Character determines
- 6:35what happens when they arrive. The gift can create
- 6:38opportunities. Character determines what we do
- 6:41with those opportunities. The gift can produce
- 6:44influence. Character determines whether that
- 6:46influence becomes a blessing or a danger. This
- 6:50is why God cares about the vessel. Consider David.
- 6:56David knew how to fight when enemies were in
- 6:58front of him. He faced Goliath. He survived Saul.
- 7:02He lived in caves. He endured rejection. He fought
- 7:06battles. He depended upon God. But 2 Samuel chapter
- 7:1011 begins with an interesting detail. It was
- 7:13the season when kings went to war, yet David
- 7:16remained in Jerusalem. Then one evening David
- 7:20walked on the roof, and he saw Bathsheba. Think
- 7:24about this. Goliath could not destroy David.
- 7:28Saul could not destroy David. The Philistines
- 7:31could not destroy David. The wilderness could
- 7:34not destroy David. But when David reached a place
- 7:38of comfort, another battle appeared. Not outside
- 7:42him, inside him. The warrior who had demonstrated
- 7:46extraordinary discipline while running for his
- 7:48life failed to govern desire when he possessed
- 7:51power. And this is why refinement matters. Sometimes
- 7:57your greatest threat is not the enemy standing
- 7:59in front of you. Sometimes it is the appetite
- 8:03living within you. David's position gave him
- 8:06access. His authority gave him power. An uncontrolled
- 8:11desire turned access into opportunity for compromise.
- 8:16Then compromise required concealment. Concealment
- 8:19produced manipulation, and eventually one moment
- 8:23affected a household, a family, a kingdom, and
- 8:26generations. The seed looked small. The harvest
- 8:30was enormous. The higher you go, the more character
- 8:35matters. This is why character cannot be treated
- 8:38as optional. At lower levels of responsibility,
- 8:42an undisciplined decision may affect you. At
- 8:45higher levels, the same weakness can affect hundreds
- 8:48or thousands of people. Influence magnifies both
- 8:52strengths and weaknesses. Authority magnifies
- 8:55character. Money magnifies character. Visibility
- 8:59magnifies character. Opportunity magnifies character.
- 9:05This is why sometimes God delays what we are
- 9:07asking him to release. Maybe God is not saying,
- 9:11you cannot have it. Maybe God is saying, I need
- 9:14to prepare you to carry it. Because the blessing
- 9:16you are praying for may create access you have
- 9:19never had before. And new access requires new
- 9:23discipline. This is where James 3 becomes important.
- 9:29James chapter three speaks about something incredibly
- 9:32small, the tongue. James says a bit can control
- 9:37a horse. A small rudder can direct a large ship.
- 9:41A small spark can set a great forest on fire.
- 9:45And then James turns our attention to the tongue.
- 9:49Why? Because something small can determine the
- 9:52direction of something much larger. That is the
- 9:56theology of discipline. You don't always lose
- 9:58a vision through one enormous decision. Sometimes
- 10:02something small repeatedly left undisciplined
- 10:05begins steering the entire vessel. A sentence,
- 10:08a reaction, an appetite, a conversation, a relationship,
- 10:14a private message, a secret habit, a moment of
- 10:18anger, a refusal to apologize, one small spark,
- 10:23and suddenly an entire forest is burning. James
- 10:26is teaching us something bigger than speech.
- 10:29Maturity requires government over self. And if
- 10:32God is preparing us for greater influence, He
- 10:35must teach us to govern what we already possess.
- 10:38Can God trust your mouth with your next level?
- 10:41Think about this carefully. Maybe before God
- 10:44increases your influence, He wants to refine
- 10:47your speech, because greater influence means
- 10:50your words travel farther. When nobody knows
- 10:53you, One careless statement may affect a few
- 10:57people. When thousands listen to you, the same
- 11:00statement can affect thousands. When you become
- 11:02a leader, your words can create culture. Your
- 11:06words can encourage. Your words can destroy.
- 11:10Your words can heal. Your words can humiliate.
- 11:14Your words can protect. Your words can expose
- 11:18things that should have remained confidential.
- 11:20Your words can start battles that wisdom could
- 11:24have prevented. So maybe God is refining your
- 11:27tongue because he intends to increase your voice.
- 11:31Can you remain silent when you possess information
- 11:33that could embarrass someone? Can you control
- 11:36your response when someone disrespects you? Can
- 11:39you refuse gossip when participating would make
- 11:42you feel accepted? Can you apologize? Can you
- 11:46receive correction without immediately defending
- 11:48yourself? Can you disagree without becoming destructive?
- 11:53Can you possess authority without using words
- 11:56to humiliate people beneath you? These may look
- 11:59like small things. James says, look at the rudder,
- 12:02small thing, large ship. One thing is sure, the
- 12:09fire reveals your reactions. One of the clearest
- 12:13measurements of refinement is not simply what
- 12:15you believe, it is how you react. Your reaction
- 12:19when you are offended. Your reaction when you
- 12:21are corrected. Your reaction when somebody says
- 12:24no. Your reaction when you are overlooked. Your
- 12:28reaction when somebody else receives recognition.
- 12:31Your reaction when God makes you wait. Your reaction
- 12:34when someone misunderstands you. Your reaction
- 12:37when you have the power to retaliate. Because
- 12:39reactions reveal what polished appearances can
- 12:42hide. And sometimes God allows the fire to reach
- 12:45our reactions. Not because He wants to embarrass
- 12:48us, because He wants to heal us. One thing is
- 12:54true. Exposure can be mercy. This is something
- 12:59we need to understand. When God exposes something
- 13:02inside you, don't immediately interpret the exposure
- 13:06as rejection. Exposure can be mercy. Imagine
- 13:10discovering a crack in the foundation of a house
- 13:13before adding another floor. You might be disappointed
- 13:17that construction must stop. But discovering
- 13:19the crack before expansion is mercy. Because
- 13:23expansion would have magnified the weakness.
- 13:25And maybe that is what God is doing with some
- 13:28of us. You asked Him for expansion. God revealed
- 13:32a crack. You asked Him for greater influence.
- 13:36God exposed an insecurity. You asked Him for
- 13:40greater authority. God exposed anger. You asked
- 13:44Him for a relationship. God exposed emotional
- 13:47dependency. You asked him for financial increase.
- 13:51God exposed poor stewardship. You asked him to
- 13:54enlarge the ministry. God exposed an appetite
- 13:57that could eventually destroy it. Don't despise
- 14:00the revelation. Repair the foundation. Above
- 14:05all, don't defend what God is trying to remove.
- 14:10This may be one of the most important lessons
- 14:12of refinement. When God reveals something, Our
- 14:15first instinct can be to defend ourselves. That's
- 14:19just how I am. Everybody does it. They started
- 14:24it. You don't understand what they did to me.
- 14:27I'm only human. Yes, you are human. And yes,
- 14:33grace is real. But grace is not permission to
- 14:36protect what God is trying to transform. There
- 14:39are things God forgives that he still wants to
- 14:42remove from our character. There are patterns
- 14:45mercy covers that sanctification must confront
- 14:48so when the fire reveals something Don't waste
- 14:52the revelation defending it bring it to God God
- 14:56I didn't realize this was still inside me God
- 15:00I didn't realize how angry I was God I didn't
- 15:04realize how much I needed people's approval God
- 15:07I didn't realize how easily my mouth could become
- 15:10destructive God I didn't realize this relationship
- 15:14had so much influence over me. God, I didn't
- 15:18realize how comfortable I had become with compromise.
- 15:21And then pray, refine me. One thing's certain,
- 15:27the fire is not your enemy. Maybe we have spent
- 15:30too much time rebuking every uncomfortable season.
- 15:33Sometimes we need discernment before we rebuke
- 15:36the fire, because not every difficult season
- 15:39means God has abandoned you and not every fire
- 15:42was created by God. People can hurt us. Our own
- 15:45decisions can create consequences. We live in
- 15:49a fallen world. The enemy can oppose us. But
- 15:52here is the confidence of the believer. Whatever
- 15:55the source of the fire, God can refuse to waste
- 15:58it. He can take what was intended to weaken you.
- 16:02and use it to expose what needs strengthening.
- 16:05He can take what was intended to humiliate you
- 16:08and use it to develop humility without destroying
- 16:12your dignity. He can take disappointment and
- 16:15teach discernment. He can take betrayal and teach
- 16:18boundaries. He can take waiting and develop patience.
- 16:22He can take pressure and reveal character. He
- 16:26can take the fire and refine the vessel. Therefore,
- 16:30Before you ask God to remove it, ask what it
- 16:33is revealing. So perhaps our prayer needs to
- 16:36change again. Before asking, God, when will this
- 16:40end? Ask, God, what is this revealing? What is
- 16:44this pressure showing me about myself? What does
- 16:47my reaction reveal? What does my anger reveal?
- 16:52What does my fear reveal? What does my need to
- 16:55retaliate reveal? What does my inability to wait
- 16:59reveal? What does my response to correction reveal?
- 17:03What does my private life reveal? What does my
- 17:06mouth reveal? What happens inside me when nobody
- 17:10applauds? What happens when somebody else succeeds?
- 17:14What happens when I finally receive authority?
- 17:17Because those questions are not designed to condemn
- 17:19you. They are invitations to refinement. One
- 17:24thing is certain, the fire reveals what success
- 17:27can hide. Maybe success allowed you to hide it.
- 17:31Maybe your gift compensated for it. Maybe your
- 17:34position protected it. Maybe people were afraid
- 17:37to confront it. Maybe applause drowned out conviction.
- 17:41Maybe comfort made you believe it was gone. And
- 17:44then the fire came. Suddenly you saw something.
- 17:47Something uncomfortable. Something you wished
- 17:49wasn't there. But don't run from the revelation.
- 17:53God may be showing you today what he refuses
- 17:56to allow to destroy tomorrow. The exposure may
- 17:59hurt, but the exposure may also be protection,
- 18:03because God is not merely interested in getting
- 18:06you to your destination. God is interested in
- 18:09the person who arrives there. He is preparing
- 18:12your character for your calling, your discipline
- 18:15for your opportunity, your humility for your
- 18:18influence, your wisdom for your authority. Your
- 18:21self -control for your access. Your private life
- 18:24for your public assignment. And perhaps your
- 18:26fire is revealing something that your success
- 18:29would have allowed you to carry for years. So
- 18:31don't waste the fire. Let it speak. Let God search
- 18:35you. Let the Holy Spirit reveal you to yourself.
- 18:38And when he puts his finger on something, don't
- 18:41hide it. Don't justify it. Don't normalize it.
- 18:45Don't protect it. Surrender it. Because God does
- 18:48not expose impurities simply to shame the gold.
- 18:51He exposes them because He intends to refine
- 18:55the gold. You are not being refined without purpose.
- 18:58God is preparing a vessel capable of carrying
- 19:01what He intends to entrust to it. And in our
- 19:04next conversation, we will move directly into
- 19:07one of the disciplines that protects that vessel.
- 19:11Self -discipline. Because vision without discipline
- 19:14is vulnerable. Gift without discipline is vulnerable.
- 19:18Anointing without discipline is vulnerable. And
- 19:21what God entrusts to us must be protected by
- 19:24the character we allow him to develop within
- 19:27us. This is pimoja ministry, and this is refined
- 19:31for a purpose.
