Transcript
- 0:10All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Hillary Condon.
- 0:13On a Thursday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network fires back up
- 0:17after three hours of the Dan Patrick Show.
- 0:19Trent Condon and Kendall are with you for the next couple of
- 0:22hours to talk sports with you. And thank you.
- 0:25We appreciate you starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:27Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:29We're going to start with some Big 12 conversation.
- 0:31Our friend Matt Poston from Heartland College Sports will go
- 0:34round the Big 12. Pick his brain as we head into
- 0:37the penultimate weekend of Big 12 Conference play far as far as
- 0:41the men, the women are coming to the end this weekend, tournament
- 0:45next weekend. So men's and women's Big 12
- 0:47basketball in focus coming up here at the bottom of the hour
- 0:51with our friend Matt Postins from Heartland College Sports.
- 0:54Elliot Clough covers Iowa will recap their convincing victory
- 0:58last night over the Buckeyes. I'm sure everybody was fine,
- 1:01calm, not overreacting in the first few minutes of that
- 1:04basketball game last night. We'll get into that.
- 1:08But Elliot Clef will recap that. Take a look ahead to a an 11:00
- 1:12hour time, local tips, sleepy Penn State, Happy Valley, the
- 1:16scene of that one. I will do the Hawks to kick off
- 1:19our number 2 and then the NFL with a friend, Dalton Wasserman,
- 1:23who writes for and what do you call it, Blogs with video.
- 1:26Is that a vlog video blog, video blog.
- 1:29He does that for profootballfocus.com.
- 1:32We'll go to Indianapolis and catch up with Dalton coming up
- 1:36here at 1:30. Trent will make some picks,
- 1:38Circa Sports sponsor those, and we'll slide on out of here and
- 1:41turn things over and off the bench with Sean Roberts and
- 1:45Lucas Strain. They have one of the field of 68
- 1:47guys today, Rocco Miller. 'S Oh yes, absolutely.
- 1:50Miller going to be a part of their program coming up here
- 1:53today. So good to see you.
- 1:54Good to talk to you. Let's go back to the beginning
- 1:57of the game last night. Oh, boy, what a start for Ohio
- 2:00State. What they miss, they couldn't
- 2:02miss. They honestly couldn't miss.
- 2:04What are you thinking at that point?
- 2:05Well I got the text. I miss Fran but it was 14 to 2 I
- 2:09got from. From who?
- 2:11Not somebody in our building. No, no, not, not in our
- 2:13building. A self-proclaimed Hawkeye fan.
- 2:14Hawkeye Andy, who calls it from time to time.
- 2:16Yeah, he he wasn't pleased. He was missing Freya McCaffrey.
- 2:19Did you hear from Andy again but at the end of the night?
- 2:22Or yeah, he said it was reversed psychology.
- 2:24That's what he was doing. Yeah, that's that was the
- 2:27excuse. Well, it worked.
- 2:28That came out. They're hitting shots.
- 2:30The first couple were difficult. The other two were open.
- 2:33It's 14 two. And in a game like this, we
- 2:35talked about Ohio State. Bad matchup for Iowa.
- 2:38They needed the game, too. Trent it was a must win now.
- 2:41It was so funny because the night before they had gone from
- 2:440 quad 1 victories to 1 quad 1. Because of Northwestern?
- 2:47Is that what I understand? Because Northwestern moved into
- 2:49the top 75. Yeah.
- 2:51So they became a quad. So they backed.
- 2:53They backed into one. Yes.
- 2:54So they had one that they they hadn't had the day previous, but
- 2:57that aside and then they just kept coming and they didn't
- 3:00panic. And even when they it was 15
- 3:03five and there was a drive inside that they weren't
- 3:06chucking up shots, they weren't taken bad.
- 3:08It was just they're fine. And I think that says something
- 3:11about McCollum. There's been a couple of moments
- 3:13this year where they've been down and battled back.
- 3:15And in a game like that, that is important.
- 3:18Everybody in the building knew the importance of that game on
- 3:20both sides. It was an important game for
- 3:22both teams and for them not to panic very Workman like and get
- 3:25it done on the defensive end of the floor.
- 3:27And Kale Combs much malign. Yeah, he's been bad for a month,
- 3:31right? And we know he's a good
- 3:33defender, but offensively? Defender, he's really good.
- 3:35He was outstanding against Thornton and what they did for
- 3:39him. Thornton had what, 10 points and
- 3:41he didn't? Have a field goal until 27
- 3:43minutes into the game. Yeah, 44 free throws.
- 3:45Let me. Look, what did he finish with?
- 3:4610 points? Yeah.
- 3:48They did a great job and something that they don't do
- 3:50often and you can see this was the game plan is we're going to
- 3:53hedge like they do, but instead of hedging falling back, we're
- 3:57going to go into that drop coverage instead.
- 3:59We're going to hedge hard on him, get the double team, get
- 4:02the ball out of his hands. Now when they're hitting three
- 4:05pointers early, like, oh, this is a stupid game plan.
- 4:07But obviously over the course of the game it worked incredibly
- 4:09well. Bruce Thornton, who killed
- 4:11Michigan State on Sunday, he had 32, has killed Iowa a couple of
- 4:15different times. We talked about the match up
- 4:17issue, Combs was outstanding and overall the game plan was
- 4:20outstanding. No, I give full credit.
- 4:22I give Combs full credit. But to you for bringing it up.
- 4:24He was terrific and on his defensive role again last night
- 4:28I chipped in. What about the season average
- 4:30for him offensively last night? But.
- 4:32Hit a three on that quarter when they were coming back.
- 4:35Yep, you're right. Did that give him the lead?
- 4:37Maybe or maybe a tight but. Yeah, it might be 1512, I don't
- 4:40know. I'm not sure.
- 4:41But I, I do remember the three that you're talking about.
- 4:43I think it was late in the shot clock.
- 4:44Surprise, surprise. They they do that a lot, right?
- 4:48But obviously we got to get to Fulgaris.
- 4:50I mean, what a game. I'm not wasting away this final
- 4:55few, few weeks of the season. I can't wait to see what he's
- 4:58like next year. I'm I'm right there with you,
- 4:59right from the missed time this year, being off with the Spanish
- 5:03national team, the late arrival, the understanding it's a big
- 5:06jump and it's a jump up from player of the year on the
- 5:09horizon, League good player. We see the talent is there.
- 5:11It's not a talent thing, just kind of all connecting, right?
- 5:15You saw some smiles with him. He did after that dunk.
- 5:18And did you see he had a family member in the I didn't know that
- 5:22his brother Nacho Nacho Fulgaris.
- 5:24Nacho Fulgaris. What's give me the measurements
- 5:27for Nacho? He's his older brother, a little
- 5:29older. OK, so he's not.
- 5:30Coming, No, he's not coming. But the first time that he was
- 5:33able to see him in person, I saw Tyler Tashman or the Register.
- 5:36I had a little hit with him and and talked with him a little
- 5:38bit. Said he gets up to three in the
- 5:40morning usually to watch the games and being able to watch
- 5:43Iowa, and he says he hasn't missed one that he's been able
- 5:45to see. Can he hang around till next
- 5:47week when Michigan comes to that?
- 5:48Exactly. That's that's got to be the
- 5:50thought, right? You're hoping that this guy,
- 5:51hey, maybe he just work remotely if I don't know what he does
- 5:54put. Him on the team playing ticket
- 5:55indie. Right, yes, let's make it happen
- 5:57right? Cuz Nacho made fool Garris look
- 6:00great. Oh, he was terrific, Trent.
- 6:01He really and truly was. The dunk running the floor, the
- 6:05smiles, but then defense playing inside.
- 6:08He's kind of all the tools. It's not a tools thing for him.
- 6:10It's just for whatever reason it all connecting.
- 6:13He is one of those guys need something kind of good to happen
- 6:15early on, but what it does you get those kind of.
- 6:18Performance 610 How much does he weigh?
- 6:202:30 So a full year in the in, in the offseason program,
- 6:25Obviously the Big 10, it's it's a grind and there's some men
- 6:28he's playing against. I'm not sure he was ready for
- 6:30that when he got here, but man, oh man, he is now.
- 6:33I thought he was terrific. I thought that last night was
- 6:35the quote Fulgaris game. Yes, absolutely right.
- 6:38That'll be one that will remember the dunk will be a part
- 6:41of it. The the smile, the chest bump
- 6:43afterwards. And he he did, he came through
- 6:46that lane and flushed it with authority Full.
- 6:49Garris has that in them. They need that secondary
- 6:51scoring. We talked about it a ton.
- 6:53There's a lot of good. I thought Manuel, I thought he
- 6:56was really good too, Really active inside.
- 6:58Had a couple of when they're making that big run and starting
- 7:00to stretch it out a little bit. He ran into the rim a couple of
- 7:03times. Now it helps.
- 7:04Ohio State didn't have their center that definitely helped.
- 7:07And Iowa, I, I had it last night, about 44 points in the
- 7:11paint, I think it was. Is that right?
- 7:13And it's also, and you've heard me talk about this a ton.
- 7:15I want to see Bennett Sturtz so much.
- 7:18Turn the corner and go. He's so good at it.
- 7:20He's so crafty. He understands angles.
- 7:22He can go high off the glass. He he is so good at that.
- 7:25He doesn't do it a ton. I want to see it more.
- 7:27But when he gets that first step?
- 7:29Yes, yes, to go and finish and not look to distribute, get to
- 7:32the tin. He's 64 too.
- 7:35I mean, he's he's a good athlete.
- 7:36He's 6 foot 4. He's got size.
- 7:38Go in there, absorb the contact. I thought he did a really good
- 7:42job of that. Also, it was really a complete
- 7:44game. I mean, there's outside of the
- 7:45slow start, right? There's one other negative Koch.
- 7:49I got 5 rebounds. Yep, made his first shot and
- 7:52that was it. One to six?
- 7:53Yep, good looking shot. It's not like we're talking
- 7:56about a guy with a hideous shot, right?
- 7:58Right. What's more likely, there's
- 8:00something mechanical wrong or it's in the head?
- 8:02Yep. Ladder.
- 8:03Yeah, ladder. I'm convinced of it.
- 8:06He's he's too good to be missing these shots.
- 8:08Yes, he did get that. Did get the what, 5 rebounds, as
- 8:11you said, but made his first shot and that was it for him.
- 8:14But you got to keep, you got to keep shooting.
- 8:16You got to keep him on the floor.
- 8:17I I I'm not, you know, one of the ones that would be, you
- 8:21know, pushing McComb to make a move there.
- 8:24He's just started for you. Starch was terrific, as he
- 8:27seemingly is each and every night.
- 8:29But like you say, it was a complete game.
- 8:31You know, we're picking Nets on clutch.
- 8:34Yes, I think it's deserved. But you know, for the most part
- 8:38that was a terrific effort last night.
- 8:39Now build on it. Go to go to Happy valley.
- 8:42It's going to be an awful atmosphere, Terrible atmosphere.
- 8:47Knock off Penn State and then come home and play.
- 8:49Couple of top 15. Where's Nebraska?
- 8:52Ranked down? Are they still in the top 10 or
- 8:53do they fall out of it? If they did, they're not far.
- 8:55We know where Michigan is, but two ranked teams to to end the
- 8:59regular season #12 #12 the Michigan.
- 9:02Michigan middle of the week before ending over in Lincoln.
- 9:05See, I had them mixed up. I thought Iowa finished at home.
- 9:10Oh, OK. Because I didn't even have the
- 9:12tickets when I was on vacation. Doctor Fuller's tickets, They
- 9:15didn't get used. Oh.
- 9:16No. But my that but on me but they
- 9:19we they will finish over in Lincoln and but win this one
- 9:22would you? Please yes and if don't give it
- 9:24back. Right.
- 9:25If they do, that locks them into Thursday.
- 9:28Yes, they will be the number 8 seed then.
- 9:31Top of the bracket, yeah. I mean, there, I think there are
- 9:35a couple of crazy things that could happen, but yes, for the
- 9:37most part, they're going to be the number 8 seed.
- 9:40Indiana could be a team. UCLA could be the team.
- 9:42That'll be the 9:00, as long as they get past the.
- 9:44Ohio State could be there, too. Possibly.
- 9:47I think their schedule, they got a couple of kind of coin flip
- 9:51games. Do they finish with Indiana?
- 9:54I think. It's probably do, probably do,
- 9:56and I think they have Purdue coming up this weekend if memory
- 9:59serves, but. Purdue Michigan State tonight by
- 10:01the. Way I'm I think we're going to
- 10:03see I will probably in that eight spot they hold serve and.
- 10:07That would be an early game on Thursday.
- 10:09Yes, yeah, I believe that is the case.
- 10:12Well, I can bring up the Big 10. We're getting close, aren't we?
- 10:15Yeah, I hate to say it, but you're right.
- 10:18It goes fast every single time the.
- 10:19Women's tournaments are next week.
- 10:20That's right, it's going to be Valley next week.
- 10:23Madness is happening next week, and we'll get to that here
- 10:25momentarily. All right, here's the schedule
- 10:27Tuesday. Now, the Big 10 tournament
- 10:29starts Tuesday. At which, you know what?
- 10:32I'm glad. I'm right there with.
- 10:33You what they they left what four teams or three, four teams
- 10:36home last year? No, don't do that.
- 10:38It give everybody a chance to put the, you know, put the
- 10:40uniform on. One more what?
- 10:42Does it hurt? Exactly?
- 10:43You'll have to have Peacock for this one for both games on
- 10:46Tuesday as the 16 seed plays the. 17 Yeah, makes sense.
- 10:50And then the early evening affair will be the 15 versus the
- 10:5318. If they do fall to a nine seed,
- 10:57they would play the early game. Then on Wednesday, 11:00 AM,
- 11:00that's when they would play. That would be a match up against
- 11:04the winner of the 1617 game. But if they are the eight seed,
- 11:09which is the most likely with a win against Penn State, even
- 11:12losing to Michigan and against Nebraska 11 AM, they would play
- 11:16on Thursday against most likely the number 9 seed and then would
- 11:20play the number one seed if they win that one.
- 11:21Again, that would be Michigan. Michigan waiting in the
- 11:25quarterfinals. So you play Thursday, come back
- 11:27Friday to take on the Michigan outfit and that would be the
- 11:30early game on Friday probably. Too Right?
- 11:32It is, yes. Yeah, that's also the early
- 11:34game. So some good things have been
- 11:35happening also for Iowa when we're talking about the resume
- 11:37and the numbers are stark and we talk about a ton, but I have the
- 11:40official numbers here. We always talk about it.
- 11:43So let's put some numbers behind it.
- 11:45Why we always say you want to get off that 8-9 game, right?
- 11:48With basketball, it has been 27 years since the Sweet 16.
- 11:51It's also about get to the second weekend.
- 11:54That's what it is. Well, if you are an eighth seed,
- 11:56your chances of making a Sweet 16 since 1985 when they expanded
- 12:00to 6410% chance, a nine seed, a 5% chance.
- 12:05So combined, regardless of your 89, you're not you're.
- 12:08Up against it, you're really. Up against it, we can remember
- 12:10plenty of those upsets, but they're not plentiful by any
- 12:13means. You are a seven seed though your
- 12:15chances increase up to 18%. You're a 10 seed, 15% basically
- 12:19the same. Another coin flip game, just a
- 12:22potential upset in the round of 32.
- 12:25However, if you get a number six seed, nearly 30% of the time 6
- 12:31seeds get to the it's. It's my favorite place to be on
- 12:34the bracket. You're away from the blood all
- 12:36the way to the elite. There are beatable teams.
- 12:39Even a Sweet 16 match up against A2.
- 12:41You feel a lot better than a Sweet 16 against A1, so that is
- 12:44the best path. But how about this a #11 seed?
- 12:48Nearly 17% of the time better than A10, a nine and an 8?
- 12:52To get to the 11. Yes, being.
- 12:55Does that factor in the the elevens coming out of the play
- 12:58in games? Yep.
- 12:59Yep. Or sometimes it's a 12.
- 13:01But yes, for the most part it has been elevens all the way the
- 13:04bracket. There's a lot of 11 versus 11.
- 13:07I like it. I'm glad they still have it, and
- 13:09whether it expands or not, we shall see.
- 13:11So a couple more than on the resume for the Hawks.
- 13:13OK. They have improved immensely
- 13:16here these last couple of days. Back in the predictive markets,
- 13:18we've talked about Bartorvic, Ken Pomeroy, 22nd at Bartorvic,
- 13:2323rd at Ken Palm. Those numbers are really good.
- 13:26Winds above bubble 31. Great when you're talking about
- 13:30potentially getting up to a number six seed.
- 13:32Still need more to have that happen.
- 13:34In fact, I think I will will have to win, not just against
- 13:37Penn State, probably one of the final two, in order to get up to
- 13:41a number six seed. What about if they get beat?
- 13:44If they lose their last two but win their opening game in the in
- 13:47the That won't be enough. It won't.
- 13:48Be no, I I don't think. So you're gonna need to beat
- 13:50Nebraska again. I think you're not beating
- 13:52Michigan. I'm just, I just can't see it.
- 13:55I I'd obviously I'd love to be. 429 from three OK, that's maybe
- 13:58gonna take something like that, right?
- 14:00In order for that to happen because the Wolverines are
- 14:03loaded, it's gonna have to be an ugly grinded up but.
- 14:05Tomorrow. Night, by the way.
- 14:06Oh, so great. Are you working tomorrow night?
- 14:08Of course, that's too bad. They got DDRS though, so I'll
- 14:13have it recorded and I'll watch it when I get home on Friday.
- 14:15I'm Michigan. Doctor, that is a good one.
- 14:20Couple other things that's also been happening here these last
- 14:22couple of days. And I'm waiting for a lot of
- 14:24those brackets to update because Bracket Matrix for the most part
- 14:27hasn't updated many of the different bracketologists out
- 14:31there. That's one thing I miss about
- 14:33Well, there's a lot of things about Shelby Mast.
- 14:35He did it every day, you know. They looking at what's happening
- 14:40around Iowa, a lot of teams are losing.
- 14:42A lot of the teams in that 6 to 10 seed range have been losing
- 14:46recently. We have to remember it's not in
- 14:48a vacuum and and we get so wrapped up and for for both Iowa
- 14:52and Iowa State, it's just what's happening with them.
- 14:54But that's not what the case is. It's what's happening all around
- 14:57the country. And there have been a ton of
- 14:59those teams that have been losing recently.
- 15:01That has also helped Iowa when it comes to the different
- 15:04vectors that are out there and seeing maybe there is a path
- 15:07still, I think to feel solid about getting up there, beat
- 15:10Nebraska, beat Nebraska. At Penn State Saturday and then
- 15:15beat Nebraska they're. Going to be waiting in Lincoln.
- 15:17Though, Oh, I know they are. I know that's going to be crazy.
- 15:19Place will be in full throats Saturday over there.
- 15:21Mass says goodbye. Hoiberg says goodbye.
- 15:24Not coach the kid. There's going to be.
- 15:27Yeah, it's going to be pretty emotional environment over
- 15:30there. Very difficult, but hey.
- 15:32I've seen it before, and the last game of the regular season
- 15:35in college basketball will be Iowa, Nebraska.
- 15:38It no, Yes, it's 7:00 at 4:00. All right, Yes, I'll sign for
- 15:44that. Absolutely.
- 15:44That's the last one. That's the curtain comes down.
- 15:47Yep, much like we had a couple years ago with Iowa, Illinois,
- 15:49Illinois, yes. And but that was later than 4,
- 15:51wasn't it? That was 6.
- 15:52Something like that? I think so.
- 15:54I think so. Still, the last scheduled
- 15:57regular season game of the year will be the Hawkeyes and the
- 15:59Huskers. And what TV's got that?
- 16:01Do you know? Big Fox.
- 16:02Big Fox. Yes.
- 16:03Just keep watch his face. The screamer Gus.
- 16:06Is there another fox He hasn't been around.
- 16:07I know, but just it just drives me nuts.
- 16:10Anyways, who's there? A Valley conference.
- 16:13You want to go there? Yes, yeah, because what an awful
- 16:15night it was for the locals last night.
- 16:17You know, Emmeneckers, Adam Emmenecker, who's going to be
- 16:19with the boys today with with off the bench with Lucas and
- 16:23Sean, when he said that Northern Illinois, it's not without the
- 16:28realm of possibility that they have to play Thursday, I was
- 16:32floored by that. So is this essentially the game
- 16:36at the nap center 2:00 Sunday afternoon?
- 16:40It's a blue out. I want to say at the nap.
- 16:42I think it's a blue out. But there are still tickets
- 16:44available. If Drake beats Northern Iowa,
- 16:46does that put Northern Iowa in play on Thursday?
- 16:49Not only that, you and I is going to be playing in the
- 16:53opening round. So that's for sure.
- 16:55Even or loose they right now you project all the favorites to win
- 16:59the remaining games last weekend here.
- 17:01What has happened they they lost to Southern Illinois and
- 17:04Illinois State at home. Everything was there.
- 17:06In fact, they had an opportunity to get a two or three seed.
- 17:09Instead they see the seven seed right now.
- 17:11So you project forward and this is what our friend over at
- 17:14bball.notnothing.net, another one of my favorite.
- 17:17Sites at this time of year? Yes, absolutely.
- 17:19They are projected even with a win as the number seven seed.
- 17:23That means they play the 6:00 game against Indiana State.
- 17:26With the win, they would get Murray State, who they beat
- 17:28twice this year. Still on that side of the
- 17:31bracket, you have UIC and Illinois State, so those would
- 17:34be the three and six seeds on that side of the bracket.
- 17:37In that scenario, Drake would play the early game on Thursday,
- 17:40330 against Southern Illinois. Wait.
- 17:42A second They're 330, they're not 6 and. 8:30 As we got three
- 17:46games now because there's eleven teams now in the conference.
- 17:49So you got the 8-9 game, the 710 and the 611 game, and so the
- 17:53early one is the 8-9 game. 3:30 For Drake in Southern Illinois,
- 17:57a win. You get a date with Belmont.
- 17:59Lucas just sent me this. If you and I lose this to Drake,
- 18:02very good possibility. They play against each other on
- 18:05Thursday. Well, let's project that one.
- 18:07I'll flip that one around. And yes, they would be the 8-9
- 18:10game in a rematch. Sleepy Enterprise center on You
- 18:14ever been there on Thursday? I'm sure.
- 18:15Yeah, yeah. Been there with dozens of my
- 18:17closest friends. Exactly right.
- 18:21It's kind of fun that kind of the calm before the storm, but
- 18:24you don't want to be play. Well, we know Drake's locked
- 18:27into Thursday, but the fact that you and I is, you know,
- 18:30dangerously moving into those waters that that is, is clearly
- 18:33a surprise. I watched a lot of the Cats last
- 18:35night, did you and shot the ball incredibly well in the
- 18:37second-half. We're knocking down shots, had
- 18:39to lead late and it just. Slipped away Yukon St.
- 18:45John's did not slip away. Oh my God, I really liked the
- 18:49St. John's.
- 18:50Steel, you did. You know, and they got
- 18:53embarrassed. Trent de Hollander at 424042
- 18:56points 40 Jesus. 14 in the second-half.
- 18:59That's that's, that's unbelievable.
- 19:01Saint John shot 19% from the floor.
- 19:03That is unbelievable. 11 O 56 So what's?
- 19:06Hurley going to do today at practice.
- 19:08He's got to find something to light about.
- 19:10He'll, he'll be yelling at him. Let's see.
- 19:11Let's look through the box score here.
- 19:12Well, you know, they were only 7 to 25 from three.
- 19:15There you go. Yep.
- 19:17You guys want to win the national championship?
- 19:18You got to shoot. The ball.
- 19:18There you go. That'll be the focus of
- 19:21practice. That had to be a perfect game.
- 19:23I didn't watch any if I started on puck till I were played and
- 19:26that's where I stayed. So you're off St.
- 19:30John's, finally? Why can't me?
- 19:32I just are you gonna Yeah no, I mean I know I get out of your
- 19:344th place. Well I got it pre season.
- 19:37I got it at 17 to 1 yesterday. I could have got him at. 70 to
- 19:40one, probably 100 to 1 today. We are 100 to 1 today.
- 19:43We'll take your time out. We're going to come back.
- 19:45We will be joined by Matt Poston's a lot of Big 12
- 19:48conversation coming up, Matt Poston's Heartland College
- 19:51Sports. We'll talk about that
- 19:53tournament. We'll talk about the women's
- 19:54tournament as they get underway. It's hard to believe next week,
- 19:58men have three games left, Texas Tech, Arizona and Arizona State,
- 20:02right. The curtain comes down with
- 20:04Arizona State paying a visit. To Ames Miller, Condon, we're
- 20:07underway into Thursday. We're glad you're with us as we
- 20:10talk sports with you, and we'll do so right up until 2:00 on the
- 20:14I of Sports Radio Network. I'm Laurie Condon, welcome back
- 20:39to the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 20:41Trenton I until two hour #2 Elliott Kluff covers Iowa for a
- 20:46hawkeyeinsider.com 24/7 sports. So we'll talk to Elliott and
- 20:51then Dalton Wasserman Pro Football focus season in
- 20:53Indianapolis at the combine will pick his brain on what he has
- 20:56seen thus far. But Matt Poston joins us right
- 20:59now in advance of the women getting underway with their
- 21:02tournament next week. The men's with the men with
- 21:05three games left in their regular season seasons.
- 21:07Matt Trenton, Ken, thanks for coming on.
- 21:09As always. We appreciate what you do for
- 21:11us. How are you?
- 21:11Hey. I'm good guys.
- 21:13How are you doing doing? OK.
- 21:15And what a difference a couple of weeks makes, right?
- 21:17I mean, Arizona unbeaten, Houston looked as though they
- 21:20were unbelievable. We had no idea what Kansas was
- 21:23doing. Toppin was still on the floor.
- 21:25What a difference a couple of weeks makes in this conference,
- 21:28Matt. Yeah, it really does.
- 21:30It's it's incredible. I I was actually out in Arizona
- 21:33when Toppin got hurt. I was covering that game and and
- 21:35you could he could sort of feel the the seismic undertones of
- 21:41that injury in terms of not just the Big 12 season, but really
- 21:44just the NCAA tournament. I mean, this is a guy that, you
- 21:47know, he may still end up being the Big 12 player of the year.
- 21:51I'm actually trying to clarify with the conference if he's
- 21:53actually eligible for, but he's probably a first team all
- 21:57American, even with the injury, as good a season as he had.
- 22:00So, you know, I, I, I like what Tech has done the first two
- 22:04games since he's been, you know, been out.
- 22:06They've done a really good job of buying into Christian
- 22:09Anderson. They've, they've gotten their
- 22:11perimeter guys to really step up and give them some offense.
- 22:13They're getting whatever rebounding they can and shot
- 22:16blocking out of what guys they have in the bench.
- 22:19But obviously this weekend they got Iowa State.
- 22:21And, and this is the game where I think we find out a lot about
- 22:24what Texas Tech can do, not just in the Big 12 tournament, but in
- 22:27the NCAA Tournament as well. So you mentioned that first team
- 22:31and let's say top and is eligible, you got him.
- 22:33Oh. My God.
- 22:34Debonstra, Kingston, Flemings I think needs to be up there.
- 22:38Josh Jefferson and or Manchilovich for Iowa State,
- 22:42maybe Christian Andersen. Who else is on your list at this
- 22:45point for? First, you're either tough.
- 22:46Yeah, lot else. That's true, Brown.
- 22:51Likewise Speaking of else. Yeah, it's, it's such a tough
- 22:55team to pick. I mean, I'm glad I don't have to
- 22:57do it for another week or so, but I mean, I'm I've been
- 23:01sifting through options in my head for a couple of weeks now
- 23:04because even before topping got hurt, the player of the year
- 23:06race was a pretty, you know, pretty difficult one to figure
- 23:10out. I felt like top and was the
- 23:11front runner. But all the guys you mentioned
- 23:13all can make a case and you know, some vote best player,
- 23:17best team. If that's your cup of tea and
- 23:20you think Arizona's the best team, then maybe Jayden Bradley
- 23:23is your player of the year. If you're just thinking best
- 23:25overall player, then you're like OK, top and OK debonsta.
- 23:30OK, Does Aaron Peterson qualified?
- 23:32Because has he played enough games to qualify?
- 23:34Because if he has, maybe he can make a case for player of the
- 23:37year. It's just, I don't know that
- 23:39I've ever faced a more difficult team to put together for our our
- 23:45side at Heartland College Sports in the 10 years I've covered the
- 23:47conference. It's it's brutal because there
- 23:50are really great players that are going to be going to be left
- 23:52out completely, not just on my team but on the coaches team as
- 23:55well. One of those guys that just I
- 23:57mean, obviously we go back to night number one in college
- 24:00basketball in the start that Co Pete had to his career.
- 24:03He's hurt. What's the what what's the lace?
- 24:06I guess what I'm trying to get from you is you know, I would
- 24:08statements is they play them Monday, big Monday, 8:00 tip
- 24:12central time. Is Pete going to be back by
- 24:14then? Is there a chance Iowa State
- 24:15misses him? Do you know?
- 24:17I think there's a possibility. I think Tommy had his press
- 24:20conference out there in Arizona yesterday and he mentioned that
- 24:24Koa's kind of trending toward being able to return potentially
- 24:29Saturday. OK.
- 24:30When they play out there, it's, you know, it's one of those
- 24:34injuries where you know you don't want to set him back
- 24:37because you have bigger goals as a team.
- 24:39But it sounds like he's trending in the right direction to where
- 24:41he could return maybe Saturday. If he doesn't return Saturday,
- 24:46I'll be interested to hear what Tommy says after the game.
- 24:49After that game, if KOA doesn't play, if he believes that KOA
- 24:52has a chance to play on Monday, I'm beginning to think he might
- 24:55not play Saturday. But maybe there's a decent
- 24:57chance we see him on the floor on Monday.
- 24:59Quick turn around and maybe that's also kind of playing in
- 25:02on Saturday to. Monday.
- 25:03And maybe that's something that you think about.
- 25:05And that's Kansas on. Yeah, Kansas.
- 25:08Right. Yeah, that's that's just Kansas.
- 25:10That's the big game. And who knows what kind of
- 25:12Jayhawks squad we're going to get?
- 25:14Speaking of that, what do you do with Kansas?
- 25:16I mean, when everyone gets their brack in front of them,
- 25:18regardless of where they are, 345 seed, who knows if they lose
- 25:22a couple games here down the stretch, what can you possibly
- 25:25think? I think I'd know with this
- 25:26Jayhawks squad. I think you're just going to
- 25:30have to close your eyes and touch a screw with these guys.
- 25:32I mean, it's from one game to the next.
- 25:35They are a different team and Bill Salt has acknowledged that.
- 25:39I think the thing that I like about this team is that, you
- 25:42know, I think the rest of these guys have tuned out the whole
- 25:45Darren Peterson stuff. Whether you think he's hurt,
- 25:48whether you think he's tanking, whatever.
- 25:50I think the rest of these guys have just completely tuned it
- 25:52out. They're so used to it at this
- 25:54point that they just go play it. I mean, when they played the
- 25:56other night, there was a real freedom with how everybody play
- 25:59on that team that I was kind of impressed with.
- 26:01You know, sometimes when you have all this controversy around
- 26:041 particular guy can really weigh you down.
- 26:07I think these guys are past that point right now and they're just
- 26:11like, if there is with us, cool. If he's not cool, we're just
- 26:14going to go play. So you know, if if Peterson's
- 26:17going to play and going to play 30 minutes and he fits nicely
- 26:20into what they're doing, I could see them getting to the second
- 26:23weekend. But if he starts having trouble
- 26:24with his hamstring or his his cramps again, they might not get
- 26:28out of the first weekend. I'm going to be really
- 26:30interested to see what the vibe is of the Big 12 tournament
- 26:33because I have not seen Kansas in person this year.
- 26:35It looks like they're going to they're pretty close to getting
- 26:38a double buy for the tournament. I'm going to be really
- 26:40interested to see what the vibe is when I get to Kansas City in
- 26:43terms of just around that team post game, that kind of thing.
- 26:47They're they're, to me, they're a boom or bust team in the NCAA
- 26:50tournament. Either they're going to have a
- 26:52really good or they're going to be eliminated early on.
- 26:55Yeah, better beware. No doubt about that.
- 26:57You know, Trent and I talked about this on Tuesday, obviously
- 27:01after Monday night in the 41 in in a row, you know, you got the
- 27:05Maggio 56, you got Ripken's Iron Man streak.
- 27:08You know, everybody's got their streak that they that they think
- 27:10is the most untouchable streak winning 41 games in a row on
- 27:14Monday night. And and and let's face it, when
- 27:17the schedule comes out, you know that schedule in a Colorado or a
- 27:22pick your bottom feeder to go in there on Monday, your most cases
- 27:26playing the who's who of whatever team was in Kansas
- 27:29conference at the time. It's remarkable.
- 27:32It truly is 41 and a 41 and no Matt poses.
- 27:36I'm not sure that we'll see that broken unless they do it again
- 27:39next time they play on Monday. Well, I mean, winning 41 games
- 27:42in a row is impressive enough. Winning 41 games in a row at
- 27:47home, which is what this streak is about, is impressive enough.
- 27:49But like you said, 41 games at home on a night where ESPN, and
- 27:55the Big 12 for that matter, tried to rig the best possible
- 27:58match up to drive ratings. That game drew more than two
- 28:02million viewers per ESPN on Monday night.
- 28:04So you're trying to rig a big match up.
- 28:07You know, Kansas is always going to play well with, you know, TV
- 28:11viewers. And yeah, you're right.
- 28:12You're you're bringing in Houston.
- 28:14They brought in, you know, other teams that were ranked earlier
- 28:17this year. It's in Arizona.
- 28:19They brought in Arizona on a big Monday.
- 28:21I mean, you know, Kansas is getting the rest of the
- 28:23conference's best in that game. So, you know, to think that Bill
- 28:27Felt hasn't lost a big Monday game basically since he's been
- 28:30there. I mean, and that's 20 years.
- 28:32That's, that's something that I, I don't see any program or any
- 28:36coach ever equalling that because it's just, you know, you
- 28:40have that program, you have that coach and you had that
- 28:43atmosphere. It's, it's such a hard place to
- 28:45play. I mean, I went to a game there a
- 28:47few years ago and Milo Matter played there on a random
- 28:50December Friday night. And I mean, the place was
- 28:54deafening. Imagine what it's like for a Big
- 28:5512 game. Houston has lost three in a row
- 28:58against Iowa State, Arizona and Kansas, so no problem there.
- 29:03Do you have any concerns? What do you look at this squad?
- 29:05One thing that popped up to me, it looks like sometimes they're
- 29:08becoming not what they were at the beginning of the year.
- 29:10They're becoming too reliant on their freshman in Kingston
- 29:12Fleming. So.
- 29:13Good. I, I think they've been a little
- 29:15too reliant on him lately. I do think part of that is
- 29:18because of what Calvin Stampson said earlier this week.
- 29:20Emmanuel Sharp is banged up. He's got a hip issue.
- 29:24Milo Zuzan is banged up as well. You know, you play in this
- 29:27conference an 18 game season and you're just going to get, you
- 29:29know, those kinds of bumps and bruises and that kind of thing.
- 29:33And I think that has led to some inconsistency with those two
- 29:35players. I mean, Sharp had a really good
- 29:38game last weekend that he he he did not play well against
- 29:41Kansas. Ozan has not quite been himself
- 29:45down the stretch here. So they've had to be more
- 29:48reliant on not just Fleming's but also Senak.
- 29:51And I thought it was interesting what Bill Sells said after that
- 29:54game. They were not really gearing
- 29:56their defense to defend Senak. They were gearing it to defend
- 30:00Flemings and the other guards. So, you know, I look at that if
- 30:03I'm Kelvin Sampson, I look at that on tape.
- 30:05I think to myself that might be a positive because Senak is
- 30:08starting to play much better. He's really come along
- 30:12offensively the last month, month and a half.
- 30:15I could see him becoming a much bigger part of the puzzle for
- 30:18them because their senior guards are so banged up and because
- 30:22Fleming's really does need somebody that can you can play
- 30:24off of. And because of Cenex height
- 30:26inside, his ability to come out and take a jump shot and his
- 30:30rebounding ability, I could I could see the two of them having
- 30:33a really good run here the next few weeks.
- 30:36At this point in the year, going into the Big 12 tournament,
- 30:39you're you're only worried about playing time.
- 30:42If a guy's hurt, if the guy's not hurt, you're going to play
- 30:45him as much as you need to play him down the stretch.
- 30:47Matt Postons from Heartland College Sports is our guest.
- 30:50Couple more on the men and want to save some time to pick your
- 30:52brain on the women's tournament as they get underway next week.
- 30:55Hard to believe, but here we are.
- 30:57BYU, they beat Iowa State convincingly on Saturday night.
- 31:01Here comes the Central Florida team.
- 31:03I think we discussed in the past with Trent and I both think this
- 31:06is kind of that next tier of teams in the Big 12.
- 31:10Central Florida just absolutely pasted him.
- 31:13What's what's happening is just night to night in the in the Big
- 31:1612, because BYU looked unbeatable on Saturday night,
- 31:19looked anything but earlier in the week.
- 31:22Yeah, it is one of those night to night things.
- 31:24But I think also UCF kind of knows what they have on the line
- 31:27here. I mean, going into that game,
- 31:29they were in the last four buys on ESPN's bracket.
- 31:31Once they won that game, they were out of last four buys,
- 31:33which means basically you're safely in the tournament at that
- 31:36point. So they know that they've got,
- 31:39you know, a little more resume work to do, although frankly, I
- 31:42think they're in period no matter what happens moving
- 31:44forward. You know, they've won 20 games
- 31:48now, but they went in there and shot the three incredibly well.
- 31:51They have almost kind of a generational night shooting the
- 31:54three pointer against BYU and and The thing is, you know,
- 31:57Devonster plays great, right, Plays great.
- 32:01The rest of those guys are night to night and without Richie
- 32:03Saunders. That's why their ceiling is so
- 32:05low now. You know, it's you're, you're,
- 32:07you know, that Iowa State game, it wasn't just those two guys.
- 32:10Kaita had a really good game and R Davis had a really good game.
- 32:12Everybody stepped up and and played their role against UCF.
- 32:16That didn't happen. So, you know, Kevin Young's got
- 32:19some work to do with these guys just in terms of getting them
- 32:21all In Sync going into the NCAA tournament or it's going to be a
- 32:24really short stay for them. Bubble teams, if one of these
- 32:28teams gets in the TCU, the West Virginia, the Cincinnati's, of
- 32:31that group, who do you like the most to maybe pull off an upset?
- 32:34You know, win a game of Dayton, upset a six seed in the second
- 32:37round, something like that. Out of the bubble teams, who do
- 32:39you like the most? Well, I think TCU is the one.
- 32:43I think they're the one team on that bubble that has the best
- 32:45chance of getting in. They've got Texas Tech coming up
- 32:48next week. They've got two more games that
- 32:50qualify as Quad One or Quad 2. You know, beating Arizona State
- 32:55was a game they just needed to win.
- 32:56They couldn't possibly lose that game and get in.
- 32:59They won that game the other night.
- 33:01I just kind of like the way they're they're trending right
- 33:03now. They've won two straight games.
- 33:06They beat West Virginia last weekend.
- 33:08To me, they're really the the team that's on the bubble that
- 33:12has the best chance to get in. And if they get in, you know,
- 33:14it's probably going to be like a first four kind of situation.
- 33:17And I could see them winning a first four-game and getting into
- 33:20the first round and and giving somebody some real trouble
- 33:23because you're thinking about them as an 11 seed or as a 12
- 33:25seed. So you're playing A6 or A7?
- 33:28Could be a really interesting game for them.
- 33:31Iowa State if periodically over the last few weeks, TJS getting
- 33:363 freshmen on the floor at the same time and and a really good
- 33:39basketball team. But he's got three good ones in
- 33:41Toure, Playeda and Bateman. I want to ask you about Bateman
- 33:45because this is the guy Toure has been great all year long.
- 33:48Playeda, he's growing into his his own body and he's starting
- 33:50to make an impact, but it's Bateman who I think has a chance
- 33:54to really lift this team in the postseason.
- 33:57Your thoughts on Iowa State, in particular to the three
- 33:59freshmen? Yeah.
- 34:00I mean, I think he has really interesting potential as you
- 34:04know, extras as instant offense off the bench there in the
- 34:07tournament. I mean, he's only averaging 6.6
- 34:09points per game, but you know, he's shooting the three nearly
- 34:1239%. He's a 77% shooter from the free
- 34:17throw line. So he, you know, if he can get
- 34:19to the basket more, draw a few more fouls, get to the free
- 34:21throw line, you know, open himself up for threes, a little
- 34:24bit more hit. He hit one of those big threes
- 34:27in that Houston game a week ago. He could have a real impact.
- 34:31I mean, you know, teams are going to gravitate toward
- 34:34Monstilovich because of the way he's shooting the three.
- 34:36I mean, he's shooting 50% from the arc.
- 34:38That's just nuts. I mean, nobody does that.
- 34:42So teams are obviously going to pay a lot of attention.
- 34:44As you know, he was paid attention to earlier this week.
- 34:48They're going to need somebody to kind of take that and stipend
- 34:51it off. You know, Jefferson's a solid 3
- 34:52point shooter, but he really needs to be closer to the
- 34:54basket. Bateman is a guy based on
- 34:57percentage that could step up and and give them something in
- 34:59the tournament that could take some of that pressure off
- 35:01Momsilovich, get some of that defense to peel off and then put
- 35:04Momsilovich back in one-on-one situations where he can take
- 35:07those shots. Let's jump over to the Iowa
- 35:09State women. Let one get away in a tight game
- 35:11and then Oklahoma State just took complete control in the
- 35:14fourth quarter of that one last night in Hilton and basically
- 35:18Locks. Iowa stayed into having to play
- 35:20in the second round of the tournament as they're going to
- 35:23likely be maybe the number seven seed down at the Big 12
- 35:25tournament. On the women's side, it's a
- 35:27different year in the Big 12. Not quite the heavyweights we're
- 35:30used to in the past. TCU certainly the best team, but
- 35:33an open field when we make our way down to Kansas City next
- 35:36week. Yeah, I think it's a little bit
- 35:38more open than I thought it was going into this season.
- 35:41You know, TCU kind of had that feel of a team that, you know,
- 35:44could dominate the conference. But they've been, you know,
- 35:46they've been upended. Texas Tech beat them.
- 35:49They've lost a couple of other games down the line.
- 35:51Colorado's really come on the past few weeks and they they're
- 35:55very close to locking up a double by in the tournament and
- 35:58and taking the double by that. I thought Texas Tech was going
- 36:00to get Oklahoma states really dangerous.
- 36:03As you saw last night, they're going to be hard to deal with.
- 36:07You know, Iowa State. I think it all depends on, you
- 36:10know, just where Addie Brown is with her, you know, physically
- 36:15cardiovascular to vascular to a certain degree.
- 36:18You know, is she ready to go for the tournament because she's,
- 36:21she's their differentiator. You know, she without her, you
- 36:24know, they had to find new ways to win, which can be very
- 36:27helpful when you get into the tournament.
- 36:28But with her, they can be a very dangerous team.
- 36:31They're they are locked into A7. I did all the math last night.
- 36:35They are locked into a 7. So you know, they're going to be
- 36:39a single by they're going to get an extra day arrest.
- 36:41That should help them. I could see them winning a
- 36:45couple of games. They'd probably play a West
- 36:49Virginia or a Baylor in the in the quarterfinals if everything
- 36:52goes to chalk. That would be a a rough game.
- 36:55But you know, they could beat either one of those teams.
- 36:58In fact, I think they beat Baylor early in the year, way
- 37:01back in December when conference play started.
- 37:03So I'm really intrigued by this tournament because it's not to
- 37:08me. Coming into the season, like I
- 37:10said, I felt like it was kind of a TCU lock to a certain degree.
- 37:13I don't really feel like it's that way anymore on a neutral
- 37:15floor. I think this is a much more wide
- 37:17open tournament than I expected. If I was, they could only finish
- 37:20a game. I mean, they coughed up a big
- 37:21lead in the fourth quarter against TCU and then last night
- 37:24with Oklahoma State. Matt Postons, what are your
- 37:28tournament plans? Unfortunately, I will not be
- 37:31able to make it for the women I spent I spent part of my time in
- 37:35spring training. As you guys know, so are.
- 37:37The Rangers going to be good. They'll be good.
- 37:40I'm not sure if they'll be great, but they'll be good.
- 37:42They're they're playing well right now in surprise and
- 37:45they've avoided injuries to this point, so I think they're going
- 37:48to be pretty good this year. I think they should be above 500
- 37:50and they should be definitely in contention for a playoff.
- 37:53Can they win the division? Can they win the division?
- 37:57I think Seattle's going to win the division, personally.
- 38:00I think they're going to win it by several games.
- 38:02I think the race is going to be between them and Houston to get
- 38:04a wild card berth. That that's how I that's how I
- 38:06feel about it right now. But yeah, I'll be there for the
- 38:10men's tournament starting for the second round and should be
- 38:13interesting. We got all the Big 12 each list
- 38:16today, all the other things they're doing.
- 38:18Nice. One thing that I thought was
- 38:20really cool is obviously they're going to have a lot of
- 38:23merchandise there, but I guess some, I guess Rally House or
- 38:25somebody's going to have branded satin varsity jackets for all 16
- 38:31teams for purpose. I'm really interested to see
- 38:34what they're going to do with that.
- 38:35Good stuff, Matt. We will talk to you at that
- 38:37point, if not before. Thank you.
- 38:39What you do for Trent and I, we really appreciate it.
- 38:41Heartland College Sports for Matt Postons and the rest of the
- 38:44crew over there. Thank you, Matt.
- 38:45Appreciate it. Thanks guys.
- 38:47Appreciate it. Good to talk to you, Matt
- 38:48Poston, as we check in on the big Big 12.
- 38:51A little baseball in there, Seattle Trent.
- 38:54Yeah, you want to bet the Rangers.
- 38:56I do want to bet the Rangers. Please talk me out of it.
- 38:59Don't do it. I might need a little bit more
- 39:01than that since we're here on bait.
- 39:04Do we have a minute? We got a minute.
- 39:05So CC Sabathia going in Monument, Monument Park for the
- 39:09Yankees. I'm not a Yankee fan.
- 39:11You're not a Yankee fan. He's a nice player.
- 39:13He's all Famer. Yeah, I I'm not diminishing what
- 39:16he's done. Is he an all time Yankee?
- 39:18No, not at all. Right, so it's not just me.
- 39:22He played there a lot longer than I.
- 39:24Thought I'm with you. Looking through Baseball
- 39:27Reference, yeah, there's a lot more to the resume that I guess
- 39:29I remember. Right, 'cause I thought he was
- 39:31more well at the time an Indian and then he went to Milwaukee
- 39:35and what was he, 11 and O after the trade that something crazy
- 39:38like that. But what do you think of Ruth?
- 39:42And DiMaggio, I mean the greats, you know, but they're not.
- 39:46All that way too. I'm sure there's other guys.
- 39:48There's other guys Don Mattingly's in there.
- 39:51Don Mattingly should, yeah, but he's not a.
- 39:53Baseball not a Hall of Famer. CC is you.
- 39:55Don't have to be a Hall of Famer though, to be in your.
- 39:58Monuments, you know, and he played, look Mattingly played on
- 40:02some, if there was such a thing, bad Yankee teams.
- 40:05Yes, absolutely. But CC Sabathieth going to I
- 40:10don't know. I just think when it's it's
- 40:13reserved for the best of the all time best.
- 40:16That's how I see it, right? Or?
- 40:17Wrong. He was top five in the Cy Young
- 40:19his first three years, an All Star in the fourth year and.
- 40:21This was with the Yankees. With the Yankees and then after
- 40:24that is when it started to come back a little bit but had a
- 40:27little bit of a renaissance then towards the back half.
- 40:29What did he do in the World Series year, the year that they
- 40:32won it with Jeter and that was like 089?
- 40:36That was his first year and he was fourth in the Cy Young that
- 40:40year. What did you do in the playoffs?
- 40:42Do you have that I? Don't in front of me. 19 and
- 40:44eight that season 3.37 ERA strikeouts.
- 40:49Where are strikeouts? Oh, he's got a bunch of him.
- 40:51He's over 3000 career wise. So Goodyear in a World Series
- 40:56year too, probably helped. Well, you know what?
- 41:00Let's have Matt Snyder on next week.
- 41:01Talk a little baseball, twist your arm.
- 41:03Absolutely. Miller and Condon back to finish
- 41:05up our number one. Don't bet the Rangers see.
- 41:08Iowa Sports Radio Network. All.
- 41:18Right, first couple, a final couple of minutes rather our #1
- 41:22Miller and Condon with you until 2:00.
- 41:24So during the break, do you know every single digit's been
- 41:27retired by the Yankees? What?
- 41:29Oh, every single. Every single digit.
- 41:31Not every. Mark 1 Babe or Jeter, Babe Ruth,
- 41:35Gary DiMaggio, Torre, Mickey Mantle, 7.
- 41:39Yogi Berra and Bill Dickey, 8 Roger Merson and then Phil
- 41:42Rizzuto. So here's the list.
- 41:43Other than that, Munson Whitey. Ford.
- 41:46Sure. Jorge Posada, World Series.
- 41:49Bunch of them. Whitey Ford, I said him.
- 41:52Paul O'Neill, Right. I'm with you there.
- 41:55Don Mattingly. Yeah.
- 41:57Elston Howard. I don't remember Elston.
- 41:59I remember the name. I don't remember his career.
- 42:01Casey Stengel. OK.
- 42:03More famous for other thing, I think.
- 42:05Yeah. Mariano, 42.
- 42:07Of course. Reggie, 44.
- 42:09Yes. Andy Pettit.
- 42:11Yeah. Louisiana Lightning run Guidry,
- 42:15Bernie Williams and then CC Sabathia.
- 42:17That'll that's the list. That's a lot of retired numbers,
- 42:20but they've had a lot of good players.
- 42:21He deserves amongst them. Alright, yeah, you convinced me.
- 42:24I didn't realize. I just, he's been 11 years
- 42:26there. Yeah, that's a more of his
- 42:28career there. I thought he was with Cleveland
- 42:30longer for whatever reason, as we bore the audience with CC
- 42:34Sabathia. Where do you want to go?
- 42:36You had a football, college football thing for.
- 42:38Me, yeah. So ranking the head coaches and
- 42:41maybe we can spread our wings a little bit more if we have a
- 42:43little time later, but ranking the college football there's.
- 42:46No basketball games to move our needle tonight.
- 42:47That's right, for tomorrow. Yes, that's a good idea.
- 42:50But Stuart Mandel came out with his list.
- 42:52He normally does it like, right as soon as the hiring kind of
- 42:55finishes up. OK, yeah.
- 42:57Want to get your thoughts on some of your favorite hires in
- 42:59college football who made a good one?
- 43:01You know the interest, interesting one I found because
- 43:03of the Big 10 ties is Fitz at Michigan State.
- 43:07I love the hire, by the way. You do, I do.
- 43:09I'm glad he's back in football. I thought he got a raw deal in
- 43:12North but now I got paid handsomely.
- 43:13Yes, he did. And rightly so.
- 43:16You look at the totality of the resume and the way things were
- 43:19going though towards the back end.
- 43:20Yeah, not fair. They weren't going very well.
- 43:24Now can he reinvigorate? Can he get the fan base?
- 43:26Can he get the money? And they have money there at
- 43:28Michigan State. That obviously goes a long way
- 43:31as we know in college football is the spending part of it.
- 43:34But I do just kind of wonder a little bit about that hire.
- 43:37I am not nearly as enamored to think it's going to be a home
- 43:40run. It's a behemoth too with this
- 43:43new Big 10 and what you're going through and just getting getting
- 43:46from where they are now in the bottom third of the league,
- 43:48getting up in towards the top of the the second third of the
- 43:51league, getting into the 678 range.
- 43:54That is a lot of heavy lifting to get there.
- 43:57And we're recruiting against the Penn States and the Michigan's
- 43:59and the Ohio states of the world, and then the next year
- 44:02the Iowas and the Wisconsin's and then you got these national
- 44:05programs on top of it. It's a more difficult job than
- 44:08it was recently. Not Fairpoint.
- 44:09All right, let's save that for tomorrow when Tom Kecker will
- 44:13join us and Eugene Rappe will join us and Mike Palm will join
- 44:17us as well. For for that in our number 2,
- 44:20we're going to recap the Ohio State Iowa game from last night.
- 44:24Elliot Clef on the scene for that one.
- 44:26We will do that and then we will talk to Dalton Wasserman from
- 44:31Pro Football Focus. Little NFL combine talk with
- 44:35Dalton coming up here at 1:30. Transplays of the Day Circus
- 44:39sports sponsor. Those one hour to go for us off
- 44:42the bench. Coming up at 2.
- 44:43Miller and Condon here to talk sports with you for another
- 44:45hour. We'll be right back after these
- 44:47messages on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
