- 0:01Speaker 1: Oh, and welcome to May the Review be with you
- 0:04Speaker 1: with Nick No, I'm Joe, I'm Nick, And today today
- 0:09Speaker 1: we're back. We've been been gone for a little bit.
- 0:12Speaker 1: We haven't been reviewing. We've had a lot going on,
- 0:14Speaker 1: but we're taking it back and we're re engaging in
- 0:18Speaker 1: our time travel draft.
- 0:21Speaker 2: And today is Nick's pick.
- 0:23Speaker 1: On the time travel draft board, our time Travel time
- 0:26Speaker 1: Travel Graft Wow, time Travel Draft category Man, if I
- 0:32Speaker 1: could go back in time is Superhero time travel movie?
- 0:37Speaker 2: Nick? What'd you pick?
- 0:39Speaker 3: X Men Days of Future Past, one of my favorite
- 0:43Speaker 3: x Men films, and subsequently time travel films is my
- 0:48Speaker 3: pick for Superhero time travel And I already know that
- 0:52Speaker 3: I crushed this category pick.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Yeah, No, this is.
- 0:57Speaker 1: This is definitely a good one for a cap on
- 1:01Speaker 1: our last time travel draft episode which if you haven't
- 1:04Speaker 1: if you haven't watched that, or if you're not familiar,
- 1:06Speaker 1: go back into our time travel draft watch list, our
- 1:09Speaker 1: playlist to get caught up on what we've been drafting
- 1:13Speaker 1: and what movies that you know you need to get
- 1:16Speaker 1: caught up.
- 1:16Speaker 3: On our.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Last episode for Superhero time travel draft, we were talking
- 1:21Speaker 1: about my pick, which was Donnie Darko, which we had
- 1:24Speaker 1: a lot of debate on that.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I very much.
- 1:27Speaker 1: Recommend taking a listen to that and seeing who it
- 1:31Speaker 1: is that you agree with.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Here.
- 1:32Speaker 1: We were very very divisive on this, especially Nick had
- 1:34Speaker 1: some outrageous, outrageous opinions on this movie. Take a look
- 1:39Speaker 1: at that. As far as what the heck we're even
- 1:42Speaker 1: talking about the time travel draft movie list, Nick and
- 1:44Speaker 1: I went through a bunch of different time travel movies
- 1:47Speaker 1: and we fit them into our categories to make what
- 1:49Speaker 1: we thought was each individually the best time travel movie
- 1:53Speaker 1: watch list today. As I said, category superhero time travel movie. Nick,
- 1:59Speaker 1: as you said, X Men Days of Future Past one
- 2:01Speaker 1: of your favorites. Can you tell us a little bit
- 2:03Speaker 1: more about why you picked it in this particular category.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Yeah, so, of course superheroes. X Men are superheroes. Everybody
- 2:10Speaker 3: knows that, so kind of fits in the category they are,
- 2:12Speaker 3: and you know, there is also time travel in the movie,
- 2:14Speaker 3: So that's pretty bit simply why I picked this in
- 2:16Speaker 3: the category, Joe. But for those who don't know, or
- 2:21Speaker 3: who do know but want to refresher, essentially, the cool
- 2:23Speaker 3: part about this film is it brings us the old
- 2:27Speaker 3: X Men and the new x Men, if you will,
- 2:29Speaker 3: and what that really means is just the you know,
- 2:32Speaker 3: we've got our older versions of like Doctor X and Mystique, and.
- 2:41Speaker 2: I like Doctor X.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I mean he does have a doctorate, but I'm pretty
- 2:45Speaker 1: sure that's not what he goes by.
- 2:46Speaker 3: That's true professor professor, but uh.
- 2:51Speaker 1: He should he should represent you know, he should use
- 2:53Speaker 1: that title.
- 2:54Speaker 2: He is a doctor professor X.
- 2:57Speaker 3: And and Magneto, and we get Storm of course, but
- 3:02Speaker 3: then we also get you know, the Macavoy professor, we
- 3:07Speaker 3: get the Michael Festbender Magneto. Of course, we have Logan
- 3:12Speaker 3: Hugh Jackman, and so it's just it's it's really cool
- 3:16Speaker 3: how they did this film and brought like all of
- 3:19Speaker 3: the X Men actors and actresses like together in one film.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Of course, the only way to do that really is
- 3:25Speaker 3: like via time travel. And so I think the time
- 3:27Speaker 3: travel mechanism is really cool in this film. It's my
- 3:31Speaker 3: favorite kind of time travel. And we've had a couple
- 3:34Speaker 3: other films that use some sort of like consciousness time travel.
- 3:37Speaker 3: This is that like completely and so really freaking cool
- 3:42Speaker 3: my probably it's it's definitely one of my favorite like
- 3:45Speaker 3: concepts for time travel that we've talked about.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I think that's true for me too. I very much
- 3:53Speaker 1: love the idea of sending like your consciousness through time, right,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I very much will refer to this mechanism as the
- 4:01Speaker 1: Desmond Hume form of time travel. Fuhs out there, there's
- 4:10Speaker 1: always a way to relate it to loss, There's always is.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But yeah, this this movie.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Felt very much like it was born out of the
- 4:19Speaker 1: necessity to compete with Marvel and the success of The
- 4:23Speaker 1: Avengers after like they had just proven like what a
- 4:26Speaker 1: like what a success in ensemble movie can be, which
- 4:31Speaker 1: is funny given the fact that like every X Men
- 4:33Speaker 1: movie is technically an ensemble movie. But like, I don't know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: I feel like before this movie, the truthfully like only
- 4:45Speaker 1: huge and this might be a controversial opinion, the only
- 4:48Speaker 1: really great success that the X Men had as a
- 4:51Speaker 1: franchise in in cinema, I think across the board is
- 4:56Speaker 1: X two before this movie, and I'm talking about like
- 5:00Speaker 1: critics liked it, fans liked it, comic book lovers liked it,
- 5:04Speaker 1: like X two was like pretty universally loved, like X
- 5:08Speaker 1: one commercially successful. Obviously that had to be the case,
- 5:11Speaker 1: that's why there's an X two. But there were some
- 5:14Speaker 1: things about X one that like people weren't necessarily about right,
- 5:17Speaker 1: and especially like with these ensemble movies for X Men,
- 5:20Speaker 1: they tend to like there's so many people that they
- 5:23Speaker 1: wash up or they end up like watching out a
- 5:25Speaker 1: bunch of characters. Right, people don't get time to the spotlight.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Avengers kind of proved, hey, you can do one of
- 5:31Speaker 1: these and everyone can have time to the spotlight. And
- 5:33Speaker 1: it's hugely successful when you get all these superstars from
- 5:36Speaker 1: different movies together. And X Men had that, and they
- 5:40Speaker 1: took advantage. They took advantage of it right, and they
- 5:42Speaker 1: made it work. They made it work, and this really
- 5:45Speaker 1: great way with of course you and Jackman being our
- 5:48Speaker 1: bridge in between the two generations, and it's pretty cool.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I think it's my turn.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Oh I've forgot.
- 6:00Speaker 2: You can tell. I was like, he's weirdly not pushing
- 6:02Speaker 2: this right now.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Oh, I totally forgot that you have to do a
- 6:05Speaker 3: fifteen second summary.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Please explain.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Oh, I'm so excited. So anytime we review a film,
- 6:12Speaker 3: we each take turns giving a fifteen second summary of
- 6:15Speaker 3: that film, and then the other person rates the summary giver. Well,
- 6:21Speaker 3: Joe has the great honor of giving us a fifteen
- 6:24Speaker 3: second summary today, and I'm very very happy about it
- 6:26Speaker 3: because I had totally forgotten. So if it would have
- 6:29Speaker 3: been me, I would have been pissed. All right, anyway,
- 6:34Speaker 3: Joe stalling, You're stalling, Joe.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I've brought it up. I'm stalling it out of here.
- 6:41Speaker 3: Fifteen second summary of X Men Days of Future Past
- 6:44Speaker 3: three two one go.
- 6:47Speaker 1: The future of the X Men is in jeopardy by
- 6:49Speaker 1: a giant robots, and it can only be saved if
- 6:51Speaker 1: Wolverine goes to the past, talks to the past X
- 6:53Speaker 1: Men convinces Professor X and humanity to give them a chance.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Judd, fifteen seconds.
- 7:02Speaker 4: That was as good as we've ever had. I think
- 7:07Speaker 4: maybe that was my best one. That was my best
- 7:09Speaker 4: one ever. Twelve seconds. That's a record I've never done
- 7:14Speaker 4: that we might need to do. We might not till like.
- 7:17Speaker 1: That that point, it was like, I have nothing else
- 7:19Speaker 1: to say, nothing else to say.
- 7:22Speaker 2: Was actually a really straightforward movie. It is.
- 7:25Speaker 3: It is actually pretty straightforward. Yeah, A plus, that was
- 7:29Speaker 3: really good. I hate that. That was really good.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I had to get you back after you got me
- 7:36Speaker 1: back on what was it Donnie Darko? You were talking
- 7:39Speaker 1: smack about Donny Darko and then you had this great suthing.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It was like your best summary of all time.
- 7:45Speaker 3: We're getting too good at this, we might need to
- 7:47Speaker 3: lure it to ten seconds.
- 7:48Speaker 2: She's talking about this movie. This movie.
- 7:52Speaker 1: When it was first announced, I think that there was
- 7:54Speaker 1: a ton of excitement for what you were saying, Nick.
- 7:57Speaker 1: You know, we were getting the old era of X Men,
- 8:00Speaker 1: which at that time it might feel a little weird
- 8:02Speaker 1: now because like of all the multi verse shenanigans that
- 8:04Speaker 1: are happening in superhero films, but at the time it
- 8:07Speaker 1: kind of felt like we had moved on from the
- 8:10Speaker 1: Stewart era of X Men, right, right, we were embracing
- 8:13Speaker 1: like this new, younger era. So to know that we
- 8:18Speaker 1: weren't leaving them, we weren't casting them aside that these
- 8:22Speaker 1: actors would still be reprising these roles in some capacity,
- 8:25Speaker 1: like that was awesome.
- 8:26Speaker 2: That was so exciting.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Yeah, that was yeah, I mean it was awesome for sure.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Anytime that you can just bring like characters you love together,
- 8:39Speaker 3: even from different eras, right, it's just fun and so
- 8:42Speaker 3: m h that was I think it got most of
- 8:45Speaker 3: us like really immediately just excited for what this movie
- 8:47Speaker 3: could be. And the cool part is like it exceeded
- 8:50Speaker 3: my expectations when it first came out, and it's still
- 8:54Speaker 3: one of my favorite superhero movies to rewatch, like it
- 8:58Speaker 3: holds up still. I don't rewatch most of these X
- 9:03Speaker 3: Men films. I rewatch this one like every year or
- 9:06Speaker 3: every other year. I love it that much, So it's
- 9:09Speaker 3: really cool that we get to talk about it.
- 9:11Speaker 1: I think that this is probably the best opening scene
- 9:15Speaker 1: of at least at that time before Logan came out,
- 9:20Speaker 1: the best opening scene of like the X Men franchise.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I think it immediately demonstrates the threat that the Sentinels opposed,
- 9:28Speaker 1: it impos, right, and it it was just kind of
- 9:33Speaker 1: like wild watching everybody die, right, yeah, because it's not
- 9:37Speaker 1: inherently like obvious that this is going to be a race,
- 9:41Speaker 1: you know, very very soon. Right, And even though it's
- 9:44Speaker 1: a raised I think that the threat still lingers because
- 9:47Speaker 1: at this point, like all they're doing is running away, right,
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's still right, it's still high stakes. Yeah, So like
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Sentinels immediately feel like this like horrible threat, right,
- 9:58Speaker 1: And I think the movie does a great job in
- 10:01Speaker 1: demonstrating that it is. It is the best use of
- 10:05Speaker 1: an opening scene. I think up to this point in
- 10:07Speaker 1: like the X Men timeline.
- 10:08Speaker 3: We can kind of get into the time travel if
- 10:10Speaker 3: you want here. But Professor X has this crazy idea
- 10:14Speaker 3: of sending himself back all the way to the nineteen
- 10:17Speaker 3: seventy three before the Sentinel program was launched to stop
- 10:22Speaker 3: them from being created, so that all of this gets
- 10:25Speaker 3: undone shadowcat Kitty says, you know, it's just like we
- 10:30Speaker 3: can only send you back a few minutes because your mind,
- 10:33Speaker 3: like even Professor X's mind, with how powerful it is,
- 10:36Speaker 3: like we'll be ripped to shreds if we send him
- 10:39Speaker 3: back too far. And so like right away, we're already
- 10:43Speaker 3: getting like explanation for like this consciousness time travel, right,
- 10:46Speaker 3: and like how far back can it work without being
- 10:48Speaker 3: like completely ripped apart? And then of course the only
- 10:52Speaker 3: person in the room capable of putting himself back together
- 10:54Speaker 3: as fast as he is ripped apart is Logan. And
- 10:57Speaker 3: the cool part is it also works for his mind, right,
- 11:00Speaker 3: It's not just his body that we're finding out can
- 11:02Speaker 3: also be like healed immediately. It's like his brain, his mind,
- 11:05Speaker 3: his consciousness is like all encompassing in this like quick healing.
- 11:09Speaker 3: We're sending Logan we're sending future Logan's mind back to
- 11:14Speaker 3: nineteen seventy three into his nineteen seventy three form, which
- 11:18Speaker 3: is so cool.
- 11:19Speaker 1: I do like why we're using Hugh Jackman's Wolverine for this.
- 11:23Speaker 1: I think it makes I think from the movie's standpoint,
- 11:25Speaker 1: from its perspective, it makes perfect sense.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:29Speaker 1: It was neat that we got Bishop in the beginning
- 11:31Speaker 1: going time traveling, because like, typically, like he is our
- 11:34Speaker 1: X Men time traveler, right, and I thought they came
- 11:37Speaker 1: up with a really good reason as to why it's
- 11:39Speaker 1: not going to be Bishop, right, So yeah, I really
- 11:43Speaker 1: enjoyed that getting into the seventies. You know, it's a
- 11:48Speaker 1: pleasure honestly, Like, I love Stewart as Professor X but like,
- 11:55Speaker 1: I don't know, there's something about James McAvoy that, like,
- 11:57Speaker 1: I really appreciate. That's a lot more fun as acts. So, like,
- 12:02Speaker 1: it's it's great seeing him. Magneto always a showstopper.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Yeah, and we get Peter Danklich too, is playing that
- 12:09Speaker 3: the main.
- 12:12Speaker 1: All right, So this is actually one of my problems
- 12:13Speaker 1: with the movie.
- 12:16Speaker 2: All Right.
- 12:17Speaker 1: So I love Peter Dinglish, right, I really do. I
- 12:22Speaker 1: don't think he was cast well for this movie.
- 12:24Speaker 2: Really. Yeah, I think it's a bad cast.
- 12:28Speaker 1: And it's not that like I think that he's necessarily
- 12:32Speaker 1: doing a bad job. It just doesn't feel like he's
- 12:36Speaker 1: putting forth a lot of effort into the character.
- 12:39Speaker 2: And I don't necessarily think that that's his fault.
- 12:42Speaker 1: I think Brian Singer was just like, you're a scientist,
- 12:44Speaker 1: so you have to be cold about everything, So be
- 12:46Speaker 1: cold about everything. It's like, dude, let him act. He's
- 12:49Speaker 1: a really good actor, Like everybody else gets to have
- 12:53Speaker 1: like these big performances where like they're they're really like
- 12:56Speaker 1: selling it, and like, you know, if if you're a
- 12:58Speaker 1: muted character, like you can still have a big impact
- 13:00Speaker 1: on an audience. But like, honestly, like I don't think
- 13:03Speaker 1: he does.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Like you could.
- 13:04Speaker 1: You could switch out Peter Dinklage honestly for any other actor,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and I think it'd be like the same performance, you know.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And this is why I think it's that director. I'm
- 13:13Speaker 1: not gonna say his name.
- 13:14Speaker 2: That director's fault, I.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Refuse Joe doesn't like the director of this film. We're
- 13:19Speaker 3: not gonna say his name anyway.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Record I'm not alone in this, but yeah, he's he's
- 13:25Speaker 1: a source of a lot of a lot of emotions anyway. Yeah,
- 13:30Speaker 1: so I don't think Peter Dingklish is a good cast
- 13:32Speaker 1: for this. I think the only reason why he was
- 13:33Speaker 1: is Peter d. English was like super hot in entertainment
- 13:36Speaker 1: at the time. And for the record, he should still.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Be Peter d.
- 13:39Speaker 1: English rules. We love Peter Dingklish. He deserves everything. But yeah,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I think that's the only thing.
- 13:47Speaker 2: It was. He was just another name to add.
- 13:49Speaker 1: To the bill to get butts in seats. So just
- 13:53Speaker 1: just talking about things that we love in the movie.
- 13:54Speaker 1: I mean, we have to talk about how this was
- 13:57Speaker 1: the movie that started the epics slow motion speedster scenes
- 14:04Speaker 1: that would send a thousand other slow motion speedster scenes
- 14:09Speaker 1: into cinema.
- 14:11Speaker 2: This was the one.
- 14:12Speaker 1: This was the greatest like spencer scene in all movies ever.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Yeah, this is as good as it gets. We've got
- 14:20Speaker 3: Peter Maximo, we get Peter Maximov, we get the awesome
- 14:25Speaker 3: breaking Magneto out of.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Sorry that was I was like, why does that sound wrong?
- 14:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Maximov phro phro Maximov scene where he helps break
- 14:36Speaker 3: Magneto out, which and we also get the question mark
- 14:39Speaker 3: of is Magneto his father? Which is weird. But anyway, uh.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I love that they like hint at that about it,
- 14:48Speaker 1: dangle it, and then like throw it away.
- 14:49Speaker 3: It's like, all right, that's a weird thing that you
- 14:50Speaker 3: even like mess with.
- 14:51Speaker 1: But he's also holding like his baby sister Wanda, which
- 14:55Speaker 1: like for some reason, they're not twins. He's just just
- 14:58Speaker 1: baby sister Wanda.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Like. But we get the maxim ops and they we
- 15:03Speaker 3: get this awesome breaking magnetu out of the Pentagon team,
- 15:06Speaker 3: which is still one of the coolest fucking see in
- 15:08Speaker 3: all of Marvel. Uh. And then of course the slow
- 15:11Speaker 3: motion stopping bullets time and a bottle scene incredible, top
- 15:19Speaker 3: one of the top scene. I mean, if we did
- 15:20Speaker 3: a top fifteen scenes in all of like Marvel, including
- 15:25Speaker 3: the Sony stuff, like this would have to be it,
- 15:27Speaker 3: like in the top fifteen, right.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, this is like without a doubt, like I
- 15:31Speaker 1: think this is the funnest scene in all of X Men,
- 15:33Speaker 1: like the entire ranch scene.
- 15:35Speaker 3: It probably is. Yeah, it's really cool and one of
- 15:38Speaker 3: the reasons why this movie is so rewatchable because it
- 15:40Speaker 3: has some really fun scenes and really cool scenes that
- 15:42Speaker 3: you're wrong just like watch again. So that's one of them.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I have one last thing I need to bring up. Okay,
- 15:49Speaker 1: it's very important.
- 15:52Speaker 3: It probably isn't.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I mean, you're right, but like, also, like this movie,
- 16:00Speaker 1: we just decided, oh yeah, Magneto killed JFK, which is
- 16:05Speaker 1: wild or no, no, sorry sorry, yeah, he actually didn't.
- 16:09Speaker 1: He tried to save him, right, But at first that's
- 16:12Speaker 1: how we're introduced to it, and I would I totally
- 16:15Speaker 1: forgot about the aspect of the movie and.
- 16:16Speaker 2: I went nuts when I got brought up.
- 16:18Speaker 1: I was like, oh my god, I forgot that's where
- 16:20Speaker 1: we were going with this dude.
- 16:22Speaker 3: That's one of the funniest scenes when they're in the
- 16:23Speaker 3: elevator after Pho gets him out, and then pH is
- 16:26Speaker 3: just like, what did you do? Man? What'd you do?
- 16:28Speaker 3: And and he goes and man, he was like, I
- 16:31Speaker 3: killed JFK. And Phro just like turns around into the
- 16:34Speaker 3: corner with the security guard taped up to the elevator
- 16:37Speaker 3: and he just like yikes, Like damn, that's metal as hell.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Such a funny scene.
- 16:47Speaker 2: What else? Time travel?
- 16:48Speaker 3: Time travel? Thank you?
- 16:49Speaker 2: Time travel? Either none of it makes sense or all
- 16:53Speaker 2: of it does.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I think all of it does.
- 16:57Speaker 1: In this case, I think it does. Yeah, I think Okay,
- 17:05Speaker 1: So as you said, our method of time travel is
- 17:09Speaker 1: we're sending in consciousness back through time. We have the
- 17:11Speaker 1: perfect conduit, Hugh Jackman, a body that a body and
- 17:15Speaker 1: mind that heals h and stays pretty static throughout the decades.
- 17:19Speaker 2: Right, So that's great perfect.
- 17:24Speaker 1: I think, at least for like the kind of time
- 17:27Speaker 1: travel that they're like talking about here. I don't know
- 17:28Speaker 1: what else to call it except like remove a domino
- 17:31Speaker 1: time travel, right, like you remove the domino or a Jenga.
- 17:34Speaker 2: Let's call it a jingle block. You remove a jingle block.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It changes everything, right, and well, that feels very back
- 17:42Speaker 1: to the future. I think for this for the sake
- 17:44Speaker 1: of this movie, I think it works right that they
- 17:46Speaker 1: kept it very simple. It's like change one thing in
- 17:48Speaker 1: the past, it's gonna change the future. And like they
- 17:52Speaker 1: were very clear about that. Cool love that.
- 17:54Speaker 2: I think that that totally works for this movie.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yep. I have one very nitpicky thing about this movie,
- 18:00Speaker 1: and it's time travel that it bothered me when I
- 18:04Speaker 1: saw it for the first time.
- 18:05Speaker 2: It bothers me.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Now, when did Kitty get this power? Like this comes
- 18:12Speaker 1: out of nowhere and like the movie's like, don't worry
- 18:17Speaker 1: about it. It's a time travel movie, nerds, Okay, just
- 18:19Speaker 1: get on board.
- 18:20Speaker 3: Or get out, Like I didn't even consider that. That's
- 18:24Speaker 3: not even crossed my mind. And you know what, I
- 18:26Speaker 3: don't care.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I do not care that does not cross your mind.
- 18:30Speaker 1: This is the girl who phases through walls and like
- 18:33Speaker 1: I don't know where she's like, I can send consciousness
- 18:35Speaker 1: back through time, like.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Can we can we take a step back? When? Why? How?
- 18:41Speaker 2: Like just give me.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Something, like I can you know, phasing through space isn't
- 18:48Speaker 1: so dissimilar from phasing through time, like just a quick
- 18:51Speaker 1: sentence like that.
- 18:52Speaker 2: Just something.
- 18:54Speaker 3: I have nothing to say to you. I don't know.
- 18:57Speaker 2: It's a point.
- 18:58Speaker 3: It's a great it is a decent it's honestly, it's
- 19:01Speaker 3: a great point. I don't know. I didn't I didn't
- 19:03Speaker 3: really know Kitty's character too well anyway, so I had
- 19:05Speaker 3: no clue what her powers really were, Like I knew
- 19:07Speaker 3: the phasing through walls saying, but like, I don't know,
- 19:10Speaker 3: she's not one of those X men that like I
- 19:11Speaker 3: knew know much about. So I just like when she
- 19:14Speaker 3: had that power, I was like, okay, cool, she has
- 19:16Speaker 3: that power too, Like I have no idea, like.
- 19:18Speaker 1: We from what you're saying, this is actually this is
- 19:23Speaker 1: crazy what you're saying, Like not what you're saying specifically,
- 19:25Speaker 1: but like the movie's logic here, because you're hitting on
- 19:28Speaker 1: something so like the the three original X Men movies,
- 19:33Speaker 1: like I said was saying before, there's so many characters
- 19:35Speaker 1: that you don't have a lot of time to spend
- 19:36Speaker 1: with them, right, and like usually that's not a good thing, right,
- 19:40Speaker 1: people get washed out, right, But it actually sounds like
- 19:43Speaker 1: they took advantage of the fact, yeah, that they did
- 19:46Speaker 1: not establish those rules for Kitty, right, and they were like, yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: she sends people back in time, and like people who
- 19:51Speaker 1: were familiar with the character and only really knew if
- 19:53Speaker 1: they're the movies, they're like.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Yes, exactly, that's exactly what happened.
- 19:59Speaker 2: It doesn't changed this movie at all.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Like it totally works for the movie, right, Like I'm
- 20:04Speaker 1: not taking any points off. It's just like something that
- 20:06Speaker 1: I'm like, what where does this come from?
- 20:10Speaker 3: Yeah? Well, I mean yeah, I mean that's a great point.
- 20:13Speaker 3: But it's kind of just like, Okay, that's what we're
- 20:15Speaker 3: doing now because they just establish it right at the
- 20:17Speaker 3: beginning and there's no questions question marks about it, so, right, I.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Will say, I think the reason why they did it is,
- 20:26Speaker 1: if I remember correctly, I think it's Kitty who in
- 20:30Speaker 1: the original like Days of Future Past storyline, it's Kitty
- 20:33Speaker 1: who goes back in time.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Like sure about that. I forget how exactly that happens.
- 20:40Speaker 1: It's not because of her power, I can tell I
- 20:42Speaker 1: can tell you that much, but it's yeah, it's it's Kitty.
- 20:47Speaker 1: So like this was like a cool way of like
- 20:48Speaker 1: keeping Kitty like involved in the Days of Future Past storyline,
- 20:52Speaker 1: got without with Hugh Jackman still being the guy to
- 20:56Speaker 1: go back, which like, honestly, for like, this franchise makes
- 20:59Speaker 1: total sense.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Jackman, Yeah, for sure, And that was really awesome, right,
- 21:04Speaker 3: like having Logan go back in time and then having
- 21:08Speaker 3: to meet younger Charles and Magnell, Like what a cool
- 21:13Speaker 3: you just really awesome storyline, really, I mean just really cool.
- 21:19Speaker 1: It also gives us like, given the fact that it's
- 21:21Speaker 1: like a neurological like form of time travel, it gives
- 21:26Speaker 1: a great excuse as to why the only two generation
- 21:30Speaker 1: of like x ex people to like meet each other
- 21:33Speaker 1: are the two Exaviers, which, like, that's such a great scene. Yeah,
- 21:37Speaker 1: when old Xavier is like encouraging young Xavier.
- 21:41Speaker 3: Yeah, that's sick. It's another one of those moments in
- 21:44Speaker 3: the movie. We're like this is really cool, you know,
- 21:45Speaker 3: like so cool and yeah, so like from time travel perspective,
- 21:50Speaker 3: like time travel consciousness, we've got rules that they obey, right,
- 21:55Speaker 3: like has to you know, Logan has to essentially like
- 22:00Speaker 3: stay calm basically is the rule for him while sitting there,
- 22:03Speaker 3: which there is a moment where he sees Striker and
- 22:06Speaker 3: like gets all out of whack and is like in
- 22:08Speaker 3: phasing in and out of the times, which is that's
- 22:11Speaker 3: a really cool moment too, right, like everything's going well
- 22:15Speaker 3: like and then of course he sees this guy who's
- 22:17Speaker 3: gonna bring him a lot of hurt one day, and
- 22:20Speaker 3: his mind goes into like a bender. So that was
- 22:25Speaker 3: that was Yeah, that was nice. That was a cool scene.
- 22:29Speaker 3: But we get a couple other explanations of like like
- 22:32Speaker 3: time trouble, right, and like, I guess the only real
- 22:34Speaker 3: rule is like don't die before the mission's over, right,
- 22:37Speaker 3: because like they have to outlive the Sentinels from killing
- 22:41Speaker 3: them in the future or else. That's it. And then
- 22:44Speaker 3: of course, like Logan, I mean he can't pretty much
- 22:47Speaker 3: he can't die, but like he has to get far
- 22:50Speaker 3: enough and convincing Charles and Magneto in the past to
- 22:55Speaker 3: complete the mission so that if anything happens to him
- 22:59Speaker 3: in the past, it still happens in the future, which
- 23:02Speaker 3: like that is the case, right, Like towards the end
- 23:04Speaker 3: of the film, Magneto like puts him all these like
- 23:08Speaker 3: crowbars through him and then throws him into the lake
- 23:10Speaker 3: and he just sinks to the bottom. But like at
- 23:12Speaker 3: that time, like the mission isn't complete yet, but like
- 23:16Speaker 3: Logan had done enough too, and for Charles to like
- 23:20Speaker 3: figure out how to make Mistique make the right choice.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I think it's time travel really sticks the landing, and
- 23:29Speaker 1: it is so great to see like that happy ending
- 23:32Speaker 1: of like them in the X Mansion and like you know,
- 23:35Speaker 1: it's it's become a refuge of like happiness and education
- 23:40Speaker 1: and self betterment and acceptance, right, Like that's it's so
- 23:42Speaker 1: great and that that scene. I mean, there's so many
- 23:46Speaker 1: wonderful character scenes in this movie, and I think one
- 23:50Speaker 1: of the best, and I know this is one of
- 23:52Speaker 1: your favorites, is Hugh Jackman. I don't know why keep
- 23:56Speaker 1: saying that Logan coming coming into the man and learning
- 24:01Speaker 1: about all the differences that have happened, and then telling
- 24:06Speaker 1: Professor Xavier like I'm going to need some catching up
- 24:09Speaker 1: on history, and Professor x actually understanding this is the
- 24:12Speaker 1: Logan that I talked to in nineteen seventy three.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Right, He's just like welcome back. You know. It's just
- 24:17Speaker 3: like the Patrick Stewart's such a good actor, you know,
- 24:21Speaker 3: like he's like, well, or Logan's just like, well, Professor
- 24:26Speaker 3: History is a little bit fuzzy, you know, I just
- 24:28Speaker 3: got back from nineteen seventy three or whatever he says,
- 24:30Speaker 3: And uh, the look on Patrick Stewart's face in that
- 24:35Speaker 3: moment is just like so awesome. He's just like welcome back.
- 24:38Speaker 2: You know.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Like any time I see that, I'm like, Okay, well,
- 24:40Speaker 3: I want to watch the whole movie again because like
- 24:42Speaker 3: getting to that moment of realization that like Logan succeeded.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Is like so cool.
- 24:48Speaker 3: But it brings up a lot of questions. So my
- 24:53Speaker 3: biggest question is like what's the X Men timeline? Because
- 24:59Speaker 3: Logan gets into the lake and Striker is the guy
- 25:02Speaker 3: who fishes him out, and then this is essentially how
- 25:04Speaker 3: Logan gets to Striker's lab and gets the animantium put
- 25:09Speaker 3: inside of him and all this stuff, right, but that's
- 25:14Speaker 3: not always what the case was, right, This is how
- 25:18Speaker 3: this movie explains how Logan still gets this part of
- 25:21Speaker 3: him done right. But prior to this film, it was
- 25:25Speaker 3: a different way that Logan had been captured essentially and
- 25:30Speaker 3: given this animantium. So then my other question is does
- 25:36Speaker 3: this film negate any other X Men films? Like did
- 25:41Speaker 3: did I forget if Dark Phoenix came out before or
- 25:44Speaker 3: after this film?
- 25:45Speaker 1: And yeah, Dark Phoenix comes out after this film, so
- 25:47Speaker 1: I think you can I guess, yeah, you can say
- 25:50Speaker 1: X three never happened because Jean's alive and so Scott,
- 25:53Speaker 1: So I guess X two didn't happen.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Either, right, which is weird, right, it is.
- 26:01Speaker 2: It's weird.
- 26:01Speaker 3: So it just it brings up a lot of questions.
- 26:03Speaker 3: But mainly the striker thing with how Logan is like
- 26:07Speaker 3: captured is like a big question for me. I guess,
- 26:10Speaker 3: like the whole timeline, but they made it make sense.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Ish, so yeah, I mean all right, So, like here's
- 26:23Speaker 1: the thing, like these movies are not that Jesus, they
- 26:26Speaker 1: don't care about consistency. I will actually applaud them for
- 26:31Speaker 1: giving a reason for future movies with Wolverine for him
- 26:37Speaker 1: to continue having adamantium in his skeleton. Like this movie
- 26:40Speaker 1: actually took that into consideration and was like, hey, we're
- 26:44Speaker 1: still gonna want to sell toys of this man with
- 26:46Speaker 1: metal claws, so like that still needs to happen.
- 26:49Speaker 2: We need to establish that it happened.
- 26:50Speaker 1: They, like, you know, of all the inconsistencies, at least
- 26:54Speaker 1: they thought that one through.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Yeah, they still figured out how to how to get
- 26:58Speaker 3: Striker in him in the same.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yeah, because like Striker really doesn't serve like a huge
- 27:02Speaker 1: purpose in the movie until like that moment, and like
- 27:06Speaker 1: I assume that's why they they had him around, right,
- 27:09Speaker 1: They were just like, well, we're gonna make sure Like well,
- 27:12Speaker 1: I guess I shouldn't say that. You brought up a
- 27:13Speaker 1: great point about like the mental anguish that Logan experiences
- 27:16Speaker 1: when you see Striker, and that that is kind of
- 27:18Speaker 1: an important character moment.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Yeah, he played a role for sure, and then of
- 27:21Speaker 3: course like keeping the cannonness of like Logan having to
- 27:25Speaker 3: go through all this like these trials of like getting
- 27:27Speaker 3: animantium put in them. So like it's cool that they
- 27:30Speaker 3: took the time to like establish that knowing that changing
- 27:35Speaker 3: the whole future, you know. But that's what's also cool
- 27:38Speaker 3: is that the Sentinel thing, Like that's the track that
- 27:42Speaker 3: the X Men were on the whole time until this movie, basically, right,
- 27:48Speaker 3: Like yeah, so if they never did this movie, eventually
- 27:51Speaker 3: we would have gotten to the Sentinel future and the
- 27:53Speaker 3: x Men storyline, right is essentially what the movie is
- 27:57Speaker 3: establishing anyway.
- 28:00Speaker 1: Okay, so first off, kicking off our scores, we're gonna
- 28:05Speaker 1: talking about how well this movie functioned just as a movie.
- 28:09Speaker 3: Honestly, I love this film. This is a four point
- 28:11Speaker 3: eight for me, Like sorry you said, yeah out of five,
- 28:14Speaker 3: four point eight out of five. So this is like
- 28:17Speaker 3: probably my favorite X Men film, maybe besides Logan, but
- 28:20Speaker 3: like if we're talking about like An, like Logan's really
- 28:24Speaker 3: more of a it's almost like a standalone it's really
- 28:27Speaker 3: just about Logan, like as a X Men film with
- 28:31Speaker 3: multiple characters, like goes like, this is my favorite one
- 28:35Speaker 3: and I love the time for Olt blow it. I
- 28:38Speaker 3: watched this movie so many times that it's probably a
- 28:40Speaker 3: high score for a lot of other people, but for me,
- 28:42Speaker 3: it's like right on par Like this is a four
- 28:44Speaker 3: point eight. I'm not giving it a five, just because
- 28:47Speaker 3: it feels weird to give movies like a perfect perfect score,
- 28:50Speaker 3: like and there's obviously a couple of things that like
- 28:51Speaker 3: don't make a ton of sense, but four point eight.
- 28:54Speaker 1: I'm not far behind you. I'm a four or five.
- 28:57Speaker 1: I think it is one of the stronger X Men
- 28:59Speaker 1: entries in the entire franchise. There's very little I have
- 29:02Speaker 1: to complain about this Sands like Peter Dinklage and like
- 29:06Speaker 1: maybe just like a few like things here and there,
- 29:08Speaker 1: like we were talking about like the mystique thing. But yeah, overall, yeah,
- 29:12Speaker 1: this movie is super fun. It's probably the funnest I
- 29:14Speaker 1: think X Men movie. Yeah that's out there, especially like
- 29:18Speaker 1: if you were a fan of the original trilogy. Yeah,
- 29:21Speaker 1: this movie is super fun. Oh yeah, yeah, four or five. Okay,
- 29:26Speaker 1: time travel.
- 29:27Speaker 3: This fits fantastically in Like this, The time travel is
- 29:34Speaker 3: really awesome. I love this kind of time travel, the
- 29:37Speaker 3: conscience of time travel, I was saying earlier, like that
- 29:40Speaker 3: form of time travel is like my favorite. This is
- 29:42Speaker 3: also I'm giving this a four point eight as well. Nice,
- 29:49Speaker 3: I have like no issues at all with the time
- 29:53Speaker 3: travel here, Like I think it's it's damn near perfect.
- 29:55Speaker 3: The way that it's explained, and also like I think
- 30:00Speaker 3: it's great.
- 30:01Speaker 1: I think for the for the logic of the movie,
- 30:05Speaker 1: I think it follows all of its own logic. I
- 30:08Speaker 1: think the mechanism is super simple and very easy to follow,
- 30:12Speaker 1: even for like a casual like science fiction fan.
- 30:14Speaker 2: Right the.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I wouldn't even call this a gripe. The only thing
- 30:21Speaker 1: that like, it's not even like necessarily illogical. It's it's
- 30:24Speaker 1: like the kind of thing I like, if you think
- 30:25Speaker 1: too much about it doesn't really make sense. It's just
- 30:28Speaker 1: the the conflict of like the past, like we're watching
- 30:33Speaker 1: that play out at the same time of the conflict
- 30:35Speaker 1: of the future. And like you would think, like just
- 30:37Speaker 1: by like necessity of like sending like someone to the past,
- 30:41Speaker 1: like the domino would fall pretty fast, right right, It's
- 30:44Speaker 1: like we did the action and like we would feel
- 30:46Speaker 1: the effects like pretty quickly, but like we see like
- 30:50Speaker 1: both conflicts playing out at like the same time. I'm
- 30:53Speaker 1: just gonna put that up to like that's movie logic, right,
- 30:56Speaker 1: It's just for the sake of like a good story, right.
- 30:58Speaker 2: It's fun.
- 30:58Speaker 1: It's more fun that way for sure, So I'm only
- 31:02Speaker 1: gonna take a little bit off Four to nine. I think, like, honestly,
- 31:04Speaker 1: like the time travel in this movie is great, it's fantastic,
- 31:08Speaker 1: and that leads us to and then oh god, this hurts.
- 31:12Speaker 1: That leads us to our category superhero time travel movie.
- 31:15Speaker 1: It's a five for me, it's a five, like it
- 31:17Speaker 1: fits the category perfect.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Ye five for me as well. Yeah, this is like, yeah,
- 31:23Speaker 3: I mean, this was a great pick on my part
- 31:26Speaker 3: for the Time Telegraph. This might be the closest perfect
- 31:28Speaker 3: score of all the movies we've done so far, with
- 31:30Speaker 3: how high our ratings are for all of them.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Yeah, like honestly, yeah, like across the board, Like, I
- 31:36Speaker 1: think the only other time travel movie that scored perhaps
- 31:41Speaker 1: higher on our list was Harry Potter and the Prisoner
- 31:43Speaker 1: of Azkaban.
- 31:44Speaker 3: Oh yeah, that's good point.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but we might not have scored higher.
- 31:48Speaker 3: I think this scored higher just because we did that
- 31:50Speaker 3: one a little early and we were probably giving ourselves
- 31:53Speaker 3: some room.
- 31:55Speaker 1: But yeah, that film, we've gone pretty we've gone pretty
- 31:57Speaker 1: low since then.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Yeah, there was a couple of real moment so some
- 32:01Speaker 3: time travel films there, but they're mostly mine. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 32:06Speaker 3: this one, Yeah, this is probably the highest one we've
- 32:08Speaker 3: scored so far all the way through. So I.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think what is next on our time
- 32:16Speaker 1: travel list?
- 32:17Speaker 3: Though?
- 32:17Speaker 1: Nick is I think next on the list is secret
- 32:23Speaker 1: time travel movie, which I think we've both been really
- 32:26Speaker 1: looking forward to this particular category.
- 32:29Speaker 3: And your pick was a rival and my pick was Interstellar.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Oh oh man, oh god, awesome space sci fi movies.
- 32:40Speaker 2: Oh man, this is gonna be great.
- 32:41Speaker 3: This is gonna be.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Two bangers back to back. Oh no, I have to
- 32:45Speaker 1: watch it Interstellar. This is I love Interstellar, but I
- 32:49Speaker 1: haven't watched it since theaters because I've been afraid to.
- 32:51Speaker 3: Yeah, this is gonna be tough for you. Man. I've
- 32:53Speaker 3: seen both of these movies so many times since they
- 32:55Speaker 3: came out, but you have not seen Interstellar for a
- 32:58Speaker 3: second time. That's honestly gonna help, probably because like it's
- 33:02Speaker 3: almost gonna be like watching it for the first time
- 33:04Speaker 3: for you because it's been so long.
- 33:06Speaker 2: This is gonna hurt.
- 33:08Speaker 3: We've only got four movies left in our time Trouble draft.
- 33:10Speaker 2: That's crazy. Oh my god.
- 33:12Speaker 1: Yeah, this has been a whole year experience Nick and
- 33:14Speaker 1: I have been doing. I greatly recommend if you enjoyed
- 33:18Speaker 1: this going back and listening to the original draft in
- 33:22Speaker 1: which we actually put all of this together absolutely and
- 33:26Speaker 1: then going through our our logic of a like whether
- 33:31Speaker 1: or not the movie perform well, but you know, b
- 33:34Speaker 1: whether or not the mechanics for time travel like made
- 33:37Speaker 1: sense within the context of the movie. It's It's been
- 33:40Speaker 1: a super fun exercise to do with you, Nick, and
- 33:43Speaker 1: we've got some bangers for the last four I'm.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Very excited, stoked, super stoked. So I think what we'll
- 33:48Speaker 3: do is Arrival next, then Interstellar, and then we've got
- 33:51Speaker 3: our pick the unpicked category, which was just us giving
- 33:55Speaker 3: us ourselves, like if we can go back in time
- 33:57Speaker 3: and pick another one, and your choice was Safety Not
- 34:00Speaker 3: Guaranteed and mine was tomorrow Land with George Clooney.
- 34:04Speaker 1: So I think what's fun about those two movies is
- 34:10Speaker 1: for each other's movies. I don't think we've seen them,
- 34:12Speaker 1: like you've not seen Safety Not Guaranteed and I've not
- 34:14Speaker 1: seen tomorrow Land, correct.
- 34:16Speaker 3: So it'll be really cool to kind of go through that. Yeah,
- 34:18Speaker 3: I'm excited about that. Follow us on threads where you
