- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Whether it's morning, afternoon, or evening, thank you for taking some time out of your day to spend here with me.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: And today we're going to be talking about six simple ways to remember to stick with your goals.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: So, the truth is we set goals all the time.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Whether it's New Year's or resolution to exercise more or a decision to find a job you love, goals give our lives purpose and help us maintain that sense of control that we all love so much.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: However, maintaining focus and dedication to our goals can sometimes be challenging.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So let's start with that first question.
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Why does sticking to goals feel impossible sometimes?
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Well, because staying focused on our goals requires change most often, right?
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: So like when we have a goal, usually it's that we have to change some type of behavior or habit that we have.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: And that pushes us outside of our comfort zone into our growth zone, and that can be scary.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: So for example, if we have a desire to create better boundaries in order to have changes in our relationships for the better, we might set a goal to do that and then not follow through because there's a fear that when we create those clear and firm personal boundaries, we might actually offend people or they might just decide that they don't want to be in a relationship with us and suddenly we're abandoned and left alone.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Another example, setting a goal to change careers, right?
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Oftentimes this leaves us scared because, again, comfort zone, security of our current job.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: We know the people we work with, we understand it's it's the known quantity, and we have our routine.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: However, there's this desire to move towards a different career, and yet we don't follow through with that goal because of fear.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: These changes can feel stressful, and again, fear keeps us from moving forward.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: So it's important when we're setting goals to set them, set realistic goals.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not saying you don't challenge yourself and and shoot for the stars.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying that at all.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: But when we make goals that are so difficult to achieve, or we don't, we don't, we don't have a clear idea of how like the steps that we would want to take to get there.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Or for instance, if you happen to be a perfectionist, for example, you might set goals that are really high, like really high.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: And then it makes us feel like we can't follow through or we can't meet those goals.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So when we do have a big goal, it's important, first of all, to break that down into smaller steps because small actions do compound to make the bigger change.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: But other things that we can do when working on goals in order to remember and stick with them is go ahead and write them down.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: Writing things down definitely helps allow for the brain to have, first of all, the brain putting it down on paper, pen to paper is a great output channel.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: But when we write it down, we are committing to something and we're setting that intention.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And an intention is a powerful motivating force that lets us know, you know, this is where we're headed.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: There have been many studies that have shown that when we put them down on paper, we're really specific about that intention, our brains will then commit to it and take action to move forward.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: It's also important that as you're writing these goals down, you're giving yourself permission to imagine the steps that you might need.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: And so you can even write down the big goal and then write down the smaller goals.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: The second is being honest with yourself.
- 4:04SPEAKER_00: Take a moment to look inside and ask yourself, what are my biggest fears?
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And how do I scare myself?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: Because when we can name our fears and notice what's happening, we can then start to challenge them.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: And as I said before, breaking them down, breaking these big goals down into smaller, like achievable steps is really important.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: You know, when we have a big, you know, piece of meat on our on our plate or big whatever on our plate, we cut it up into smaller pieces so we can eat it.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: It's kind of the same concept.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Allow failure to guide you.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: And what we mean by that is when we set goals, it's not about doing it perfectly.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: It's about giving yourself the ability to make mistakes as long as you go.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: But instead of looking at them as just a mistake and it's the end, it's how can I continue to grow and continue to make take this information, make adjustments that are needed, and continue to move towards a goal that I've set for myself.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Number five, reward yourself for the progress.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: So often we get so attached to the outcome that we forget to be present for the process.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: So as you're going through the process, celebrate those successes along the way.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: Give yourself permission to acknowledge the small successes that you're going through each and every day that are eventually going to lead up to that big goal that you're setting for yourself.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Which leads into number six.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: Spend some time each day evaluating your goals and successes.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: I often will talk about keeping a success journal because when we are, when we are able to recognize how we are how we're showing up.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So it's not just successes in terms of what you accomplished that day towards your goal, but it's also how you showed up.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Those are two very important things to pay attention to.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: And take notes on that progress.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Because when you start to self-doubt or you start to quote unquote forget the goal, or you're starting to distract yourself from the goal, or you're veering off course, you can come back to that success journal and you can see and recognize how you have been moving along and you see the successes you've had along the way.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: And what that does is it starts to relight that intrinsic motivation.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: And when we think about working towards goals, it is all about intrinsic motivation.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: If we're waiting for an extrinsic factor to motivate us, we're gonna lose out on that goal at the end of the day.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: So it's uh it's important to recognize that achieving goals means that it's you keep it in the top of your mind.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Because sometimes when we set these goals and then we get busy with everyday life because things happen, families need our support, something in our work life needs our support.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It's easy to fall off the path.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: Now, of course, I will say that coaching absolutely helps with this because what we do through coaching is you've got somebody right there with you as your co-collaborator, as your accountability partner, walking that walk with you as you work towards the goals that you're setting for yourself.
