Transcript
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: You are the one who has decided on the artist.
- 0:06SPEAKER_04: What are you doing today?
- 0:08SPEAKER_04: Today is Tion of Major 9.
- 0:10SPEAKER_04: Three words to spray?
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 0:12SPEAKER_04: Steva Soul Energy.
- 0:15SPEAKER_04: Is that what it's crap?
- 0:16SPEAKER_04: That's what she is.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Steva in one time.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: Or is that three separate guys?
- 0:20SPEAKER_03: Steva.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Soul Energy.
- 0:29SPEAKER_02: Right, here we are again, bro.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Back again, bro.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: Episode 11.
- 0:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, 11, 11.
- 0:35SPEAKER_04: We're kicking on, mate.
- 0:36SPEAKER_04: We're kicking on.
- 0:37SPEAKER_04: Into double digits and that.
- 0:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, mate.
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: How you been?
- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Actually, before I ask you, how you been?
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 0:41SPEAKER_04: Let's get into the vibe.
- 0:43SPEAKER_04: I'm excited about this one.
- 0:45SPEAKER_04: We're going 93.
- 0:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: We're going a tribe for quest, midnight marauders.
- 0:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, this has been coming.
- 0:52SPEAKER_04: This is this is up there for me.
- 0:55SPEAKER_04: I'm not gonna lie.
- 0:56SPEAKER_04: This is up there as one of the best hip-hop albums, I'll say.
- 1:01SPEAKER_04: And one of my favorites.
- 1:03SPEAKER_04: I don't care.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: I don't care.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: This is up there.
- 1:06SPEAKER_04: This is up there.
- 1:07SPEAKER_04: Night night three, golden age of hip-hop.
- 1:10SPEAKER_04: Um, hey, you can all you can hold that.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Thanks.
- 1:12SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, this is their third album, and I think this is a tribal quest at their peak.
- 1:21SPEAKER_04: Uh Prime time, Electric Relaxation is like probably the main single from this.
- 1:27SPEAKER_04: There's not there's not any bells and whistles in this, really, other than the actual cover and the back cover itself.
- 1:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, doesn't it?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so you've got the all the colours in terms of the the red, black, and green vibes that they had in low end theory and that followed on to this this album.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 1:44SPEAKER_04: And obviously, you've got all the talking heads and the faces and stuff.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: That's nice, I like the label, and yeah, the label as well.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: I need to get that one, like a hat or a t-shirt as well.
- 1:51SPEAKER_04: I would like to get it.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that'd be cold.
- 1:53SPEAKER_04: That would be very cold.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: So they're this is the guys.
- 1:55SPEAKER_04: So it's uh Q-Tet, Five Tog, RIP, uh Ali Shaheed Mohammed, and sometimes Droby White.
- 2:04SPEAKER_04: They're the guys, man.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: They're the guys.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Well, what are we thinking?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Very cool.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: I'm just looking at some of the details of it.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: I like this element on the obviously you've got the little one here, but then on this sticker, it's got the track list, and it says instead of saying like A side or B side, it says this side and that side.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: Which I think is quite a good thing.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: These men are quirky, man.
- 2:22SPEAKER_04: They're quirky.
- 2:23SPEAKER_04: So yeah, these guys are the like the spearhead of like conscious rap, uh, part of like the native tongues, which is all like positive and kind of yeah, conscious lyrics and stuff, which is all I think was perfect for me because when I discovered them was like when I was like uh in my early teenage, so I wasn't really trying to hear like too much like explicit content and all that.
- 2:46SPEAKER_04: So all of that stuff is pretty clean, um, to a point, anyways.
- 2:50SPEAKER_04: So it's like perfect for like a young person, and I think that's why it was so popular for like young people over the time when it came out as well.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: It was very, very good, it's very good.
- 3:00SPEAKER_04: So all the talking heads, they're all like hip hop like luminaries, like people in the scene, like DJ uh DJs and radio um people as well.
- 3:10SPEAKER_04: So you've got like De La Sol, uh you've got like Beastie Boys, you've got like Heavy D, you've got Ice T, um, you've got like P Diddies in there somewhere, and all of them, man.
- 3:24SPEAKER_04: So it's uh and this was just kind of just before the East versus West kind of hip hop beef at the time.
- 3:31SPEAKER_04: So it's quite cool to have that and have people from different parts of America kind of unite for this uh cover, which I yeah, it's a bit I think it's like 72 different people are on it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's cool.
- 3:43SPEAKER_04: There's like different versions that you can get as well, which is cool.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 3:46SPEAKER_04: I think they've released seven albums overall.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, when they had the the recent one they had was maybe a couple of years ago, which was really good as well, and just the production is always insane.
- 3:58SPEAKER_04: And Q Q Tip as a producer himself uh is just different levels, so he's done production in like Ilmatic and stuff like that, and a lot of the 90s hip hop, especially New York and Queens, especially, he had a big hand in it, so yeah.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: So I think I feel like this artwork's pretty like iconic.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I have a question for you, you may or may not.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: So we you see we've got our sort of like main character with the red and green.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: Do you know where that comes from or what it represents or anything?
- 4:28SPEAKER_04: I don't know exactly what what it represents.
- 4:32SPEAKER_04: I know it's a part of kind of the native tongues collective movement, right?
- 4:36SPEAKER_04: And this is basically an adaptation from their low-end theory, which is also that's that's the first time that a transport quest you use that used that like kind of character in person.
- 4:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, and yeah, so this is the second iterative, and then base basically the third album, they also have that in in there as well.
- 4:56SPEAKER_04: But I don't know like signifies, it's it's all about like being Afrocentric and stuff like that.
- 5:03SPEAKER_04: That was a big theme, a big theme for them.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: So it's a really nice motif, I like it.
- 5:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's very, very, very cool.
- 5:10SPEAKER_04: So I prefer the cover of the previous album, Low End Fury, but in terms of the actual music, this is this is me, I would say.
- 5:18SPEAKER_04: This is this is me.
- 5:19SPEAKER_04: So yeah, it's got uh The Chase Part 2, um Midnight.
- 5:24SPEAKER_04: It's called Midnight Marauders because basically they say their most music is played at night and their mora would mean steal whatever.
- 5:34SPEAKER_04: So it's like we're stealing for your ears, is what they're saying.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: So well, very cool.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Great choice.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, definitely a great one.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: Uh is that I I feel like um look at it.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I feel like sometimes, not all I don't know.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: I feel like this is a great thing to have on vinyl because it's the sort of thing that is like more listen to it as a mood.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: I feel like sometimes vinyl listening, I don't know, you don't necessarily need like a heavy-hitting rap album, whereas something that feels a bit more mood-based with the jazz influence as well, I think is good and obviously looks the part as well.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I'm happy to have it as our vinyl of the week.
- 6:08SPEAKER_03: Clean, clean.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: I've been waiting.
- 6:09SPEAKER_03: I've obviously I've been like, oh, at what point is it coming out?
- 6:12SPEAKER_04: I don't want to be too eager, you know, bring it out straight away and seem too keen, but um yeah, man.
- 6:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's it's looking good, it's looking good.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Pop of colour in that.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, literally, literally.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's a shout out to them, man.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Very good, very good.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: Have you noticed I haven't got uh haven't got a hat on today?
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, I think this is 11 episodes and we finally seen the top of your head.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: I need to just show people that I my hairline is still okay.
- 6:34SPEAKER_04: It's just about it's just about surviving, isn't it?
- 6:36SPEAKER_04: Because these guys think this guy's hiding something, you know.
- 6:38SPEAKER_04: It's like the selection of hats we keep talking about I had to prove it to the man, like not everyday hats, you know.
- 6:44SPEAKER_04: But next episode I will be going back to a hat for sure, for sure.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: It's just I told you like the stars align perfectly.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you can see the trim a little fresh trim and that yeah, F4 Fage holding me down.
- 6:55SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying.
- 6:56SPEAKER_04: They're the guys, bro.
- 6:57SPEAKER_04: They're the guys, so uh, yeah, yeah.
- 6:59SPEAKER_04: So I had I got my trim yesterday, and I thought uh the people need to see it.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So you need to do a big reveal.
- 7:04SPEAKER_04: The people need to see it, so yeah, that's it, man.
- 7:09SPEAKER_04: That's me, anyways.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm fine.
- 7:10SPEAKER_04: Thank you for asking.
- 7:11SPEAKER_04: I'm all good.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Um, and that's it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_04: Such a pain I don't want to talk about me, anyways.
- 7:18SPEAKER_04: I just want to talk about music, so let's should we get into it?
- 7:20SPEAKER_04: Let's do it, then let's do it.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: Recent rotations.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Got three, I've got three.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Of course, of course.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: You want to start or sly?
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: You know what?
- 7:30SPEAKER_04: I'll let you start, bro.
- 7:32SPEAKER_04: How gracious.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: It means I can finish, so and we're probably going back a couple decades.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: So we know what I'm saying.
- 7:37SPEAKER_04: Don't spoil it for the people.
- 7:38SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: The viewers that know, they know.
- 7:41SPEAKER_00: All right.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: My first recent rotation of the week, we've got DC three Antiago new tune called Value.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay, yes, yes.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Are you aware of this?
- 7:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, well, where DC3 is uh he's having uh he's having a great time at the moment.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: So um yeah.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: MOBO Award winner now.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Um shout him out, shout him out, um following a big 2025.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: So yeah.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: Sorry, what what award did he get in the MOBO?
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: I think he got multiple.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: I think he got a best newcomer, yeah.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: And maybe breakthrough.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Although I don't know how those two different I think that's right.
- 8:14SPEAKER_04: Did they do Mobo do Christian artists as well?
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I think he got gospel.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: I think it was gospel artists.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Gospel, yeah, you might have got that as well.
- 8:21SPEAKER_04: I assume so, right?
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, maybe it was newcomer and gospel in that case.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: We'll check after, we'll check after.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: Should have should have.
- 8:26SPEAKER_04: No, that's my that's my fault.
- 8:28SPEAKER_04: I've thrown you off thrown in some.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: I've thrown you off.
- 8:29SPEAKER_04: I've thrown you off.
- 8:30SPEAKER_04: This is why if you pick artists that's familiar to me, I'll start.
- 8:34SPEAKER_02: This is like the Don Tolliver one that we did before all over again.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: This guy's just like, oh, I don't do that.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: I'll hold myself back.
- 8:42SPEAKER_02: You you go on, you go on.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: Can't wait for your one.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Um yeah, new collab needs to uh the two young UK rappers.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: Um obviously D3 DC3 we touched on, um, kind of like for anyone who doesn't know, a bit of a young UK Kendrick-ish-esque um type rapper, um, yeah, who sort of I guess exploded onto the scene with a lot of um yeah, really clever like hooky videos uh of him like freestyling, often starting with like um sort of like familiar silhouettes, I guess.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Um so he's got one that kind of I guess recreates like the Kendrick Dam album cover, for example, and then transitions into him sort of like rapping.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: Um and then Thiago, I first came across him um back in 2024.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: He was just putting up um I say just he was putting up some really good freestyles online, um, still in his school uniform.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: So I was like, oh I think he's like 16, 15, 16 at the time.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:36SPEAKER_00: So yeah, that's obviously like a year and a bit ago now, and he's just been doing that pretty consistently.
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: And the guy can rap, innit?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: He can really, really rap.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Um, so I was like, I wonder when he's gonna start putting like music out, and he has been, and so it's really nice to see these two come together and put out a tune.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: Um it's interesting.
- 9:51SPEAKER_00: The artwork, if you haven't seen it, is a nod to like um Samantha, the Dave and Jay Huss record.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Oh, okay.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: Um I feel like it's nice because I feel like it represents like these two being two of the new skills.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: Coming up, yeah, coming through, and also like a nod to respect of these guys as well.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: Um, so the tune valley, uh, yeah, full of bars, obviously, two rappers, but also got a good melody lines in there as well, got a catchy hook.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Um, and at one point there's a a mad beat switch, and DC3 goes off and does his like high intensity barring.
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, overall, really solid song.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Nice to hear that um from the two of them, and yeah, especially after sort of like the recent noise around DC3 with his um yeah, with his awards and that.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: It was good to see you, man.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Good to see some some exciting stuff coming from the young bucks.
- 10:42SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I love it, man.
- 10:43SPEAKER_04: And he like DC3, I know he's been he's got like a healthy amount of like co-signs from like reputable artists and stuff.
- 10:50SPEAKER_04: So he is like a part of the next up, which is nice to see.
- 10:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it's my type of rapper that I like as well, isn't it?
- 10:56SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, that's the type of music I like.
- 10:58SPEAKER_04: So uh I like to see that coming out of the UK, so yeah, I'm here for it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: So yeah, if you haven't checked that value, check it out.
- 11:06SPEAKER_04: Very solid first pick, mate.
- 11:08SPEAKER_04: I'm happy with that.
- 11:10SPEAKER_04: I'm glad I'm glad I always please you.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: You seem to always start very well.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I don't know.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Don't worry about don't worry about two and three, guys.
- 11:21SPEAKER_04: Okay, my number one uh is a Sosa.
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Uh okay, he's not all that is the tune.
- 11:30SPEAKER_04: Uh, I was I was uh contemplating on this one, I was thinking about whether or not I should do it because obviously she's like a fan of us.
- 11:38SPEAKER_04: Like we've got a follower of that.
- 11:40SPEAKER_04: So I don't want to be like having favourites and stuff, but I thought about it.
- 11:44SPEAKER_04: That's the whole point of this, right?
- 11:45SPEAKER_04: It's the point of us is the champion, the people that we rate, and for them to interact and engage with us as well.
- 11:52SPEAKER_04: So I thought it was only right to mention this song, he's not all that, and this is actually my most played, it's it's only come out, it only came out like yesterday.
- 12:02SPEAKER_04: Oh swear, and I've been bumping it, I'm not gonna lie to you.
- 12:05SPEAKER_04: Like, I obviously a part of the uh like social media world and that, like they always do the snippets and stuff before so she's been doing the snippets for a couple of weeks and that, and I was like, Yeah, this is a bounce, bro.
- 12:18SPEAKER_04: This is me, this is it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_04: So as soon as it came out, I was like, I need to check this, I need to go to it, and uh yeah, didn't disappoint.
- 12:26SPEAKER_04: It delivered, bro.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: It delivered.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: So I was very, I was very, very happy.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: She's on a bit of a runner at the minute, putting out quite a few singles.
- 12:31SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:32SPEAKER_04: It seems it seems like single after single, and they're all hits about the line.
- 12:36SPEAKER_04: I really, I really do highly rate her.
- 12:38SPEAKER_04: She's like a very, very good songwriter, as well.
- 12:42SPEAKER_04: Is what I is what I well, if she writes these songs, then yeah, she's very good at that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_04: Because um yeah, they're all just like very well written, like verses, chorus, bridges, like perfect melodies with the beats and stuff as well.
- 12:57SPEAKER_04: Um, she's done her whole vibe, it's very kind of nostalgia RB.
- 13:02SPEAKER_04: Uh and even this song is like a kind of a more of a bouncy like throwback RB tune.
- 13:10SPEAKER_04: But she's also done like written like songs like Lemonade, which is a bit more housy and stuff, and like other RB tunes that are probably a bit more slow and like kind of almost old school, like Timberland, Aliyah kind of sounding beats and stuff.
- 13:26SPEAKER_04: So she's got like a healthy mix in there now, which like which is like she's showing some range, which I appreciate.
- 13:31SPEAKER_04: Obviously, she's we mentioned, I think it was in the last episode, that she's got a feature in the US number one album Don Tulliver's series.
- 13:41SPEAKER_04: So she's like got vocals in the long way to Calabasas, which is like mad.
- 13:46SPEAKER_04: Um, she's I don't know if she's still on tour or it's just finished, but she was on tour of Roche Rochelle Jordan as well.
- 13:52SPEAKER_04: Um didn't know that.
- 13:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, she's doing the European tour of that.
- 13:56SPEAKER_04: So she's like popping off, bro.
- 13:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the things happening, man.
- 13:59SPEAKER_04: It's mad, it's mad.
- 14:00SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I just really I really like it.
- 14:03SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the song, I don't know, I don't know if I'm the right demographic for the song because the song's like basically saying men are trash, isn't it?
- 14:10SPEAKER_04: Like he's not all that, like, and it's just like let's leave all these men to the side and just like vibe and that.
- 14:16SPEAKER_04: But the melodies, you know, I don't really listen to lyrics anyway.
- 14:19SPEAKER_04: Sometimes you're gonna appreciate it over like bouncing and like oh yeah, like it's it's it's tuned, bro.
- 14:25SPEAKER_04: It's tunes, so that's my number one.
- 14:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Asosa, he's not all that guys riding in the car, saying yeah, but all the guys do it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Forgetting that he's not bad.
- 14:37SPEAKER_04: So that's right, you tell them, but yeah, yeah, it's a very good song, and there's uh the production on it's very good as well.
- 14:43SPEAKER_04: There's like a healthy mix of it's yeah, it's really good.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, like there's I like when they they mix different types of like bass bases in there.
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: So you got the 808, you've got like the scent, and then you've got them overlapping at some point as well, and it just takes you to different bases, and it's like it's only like two minutes or something, but it's like got a lot of variation in there, so I'm here for it, man.
- 15:02SPEAKER_04: I'm here for it.
- 15:03SPEAKER_04: I'm I've been I've like the tunes only come out, like, and I'm using I'm playing it a lot, so sick.
- 15:09SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, so that's my number one.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: Wicked.
- 15:11SPEAKER_00: We'll big her up.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Look forward to seeing what comes next from a Sosa.
- 15:14SPEAKER_04: Shout out to you, bro.
- 15:15SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 15:16SPEAKER_00: Um my second one.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: We're staying in the pocket of UK rap.
- 15:21SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: And this is Benga, tune called Peak.
- 15:24SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: You aware of aware of him?
- 15:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I am, yeah.
- 15:27SPEAKER_04: Okay, cool.
- 15:29SPEAKER_04: No, no, I was just gonna say not enough.
- 15:31SPEAKER_04: So I'm not I can't give you anything, bro.
- 15:33SPEAKER_04: I can't interrupt you.
- 15:34SPEAKER_04: So it's all it's all you, bro.
- 15:36SPEAKER_00: I was ready for you to put you on the spot with something I definitely didn't know.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no, it's all you, bro.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I would say this guy, um, yeah, it's UK rap with me and in.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Um, this tune, Pete, caught my attention.
- 15:47SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, on on socials, to be fair.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: Um, I'd been aware of like him and his name and stuff, but I, you know, it's one of those where I couldn't like necessarily tell you a tune from him.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: Yes, I'm sorry.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Um and then yeah, this was one of them like um stop scrolling moments because yeah, the way the way that he had crafted this sort of style of video, it was like quite um, yeah, it was quite captivating, I found.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Um for various reasons.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: I feel like the lyrical content one, um, the lyric he chose to lead with for the snippet, I thought was um quite hard hitting.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Um, also the way in which he just performs, I think, is really good.
- 16:26SPEAKER_00: Like he's got a very commanding vocal tone.
- 16:28SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so I was like, rah, like, okay, what what are you gonna say, what are you saying?
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um production's really clean, there's like a sort of grungy synth bass going on.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Um, he himself has a great flow, and um it was clever.
- 16:42SPEAKER_00: It's obviously well-shot content, but they've also got the lyrics sort of subtitled, which I think is always helpful because it's one thing to hear, but I think sometimes we can be passive in our listening, and this is almost like reinforcing, especially when we talk about songs that have meaning, like it really helped to reinforce it, um, reinforce it for me.
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: And even yeah, it's not necessarily a small thing, but like you can see that there's thought put into it.
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: So the subtitles have like it's a specific font that looks like it's bespoke or custom or whatever, and it's sort of like it's a bit handwritten-y, and so it feels it feels relatable because it's almost like this could be his actual handwriting.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I actually don't have much to say about him as an artist, however, this tune, yeah.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: If I was really impressed with it and he has gained a fan in me from it, and so I'd say yeah, he's definitely one to watch.
- 17:30SPEAKER_00: And if you've not listened to the tune, do listen to what's the tune's name?
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: Venga Peak.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: Peak, yeah.
- 17:35SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, I'm gonna have to give it a go.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's one of those artists again.
- 17:39SPEAKER_04: Um yeah, for me, he's just living on social media, so I haven't, I don't think I've listened to his actual song.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: It's hard.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Sometimes it is harder to transition like you as a an observer.
- 17:50SPEAKER_04: It's just we're lazy.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: That's what it is.
- 17:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's like there's so many times I see good artists or or even just like films or whatever like that, and it just the thought of me having to leave this app and then go over here and then do the whatever.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I know.
- 18:07SPEAKER_00: So I'll follow you, and then I won't sometimes be part of the journey.
- 18:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know it is mad as well.
- 18:16SPEAKER_04: Okay, my number two.
- 18:18SPEAKER_04: Um, this is an artist similar to your second artist, where I don't really have too much to give you here.
- 18:24SPEAKER_04: Um and it's the same as you said, it's a stop scrolling moment.
- 18:30SPEAKER_04: So, my number two recent rotation is mute, and the song is called Gold Teeth.
- 18:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, mute is spelt with a V instead of a U.
- 18:39SPEAKER_04: So M B T.
- 18:40SPEAKER_00: Got it.
- 18:41SPEAKER_04: And gold, yeah, Gold Teeth is the song, and it came out on the 11th of March, so fairly recent.
- 18:46SPEAKER_04: Yeah, uh, it's she's an American rapper, female rapper.
- 18:52SPEAKER_04: I think this is the earliest days, I think.
- 18:54SPEAKER_04: So her social media, she has songs.
- 18:57SPEAKER_04: I've looked into Spotify to see like what's going on and stuff.
- 19:00SPEAKER_04: She had songs like dating back to like 2022, but on her social media, she's like wiped everything up till like January, basically.
- 19:09SPEAKER_04: So this year is there's a new rollout, there's new things happening, yeah.
- 19:14SPEAKER_04: So um, and yeah, for me it was it was um a stop scrolling moment because one the visuals uh like the way it was all filmed was like super clean.
- 19:24SPEAKER_04: It was basically just her in like uh like you know the bleachers in a high school like track filled um football pitch.
- 19:32SPEAKER_04: Um she's out there and just rapping and stuff, but then she's got very unique voice as well.
- 19:38SPEAKER_04: It's quite it's quite like high pitch, almost similar to like Samara Sin, maybe, uh like maybe like Sampa the Great and stuff like that, like where it's yeah, so quite quite a high pitch, but like diction is there, and she's barring off.
- 19:54SPEAKER_04: And the beat is very hip-hop, like US, like New York almost kind of rap.
- 20:00SPEAKER_04: Um, which is obviously me, you know, new one around.
- 20:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I was uh so yeah, that that's kind of what got me in.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: And yeah, I don't really know, I don't really have anything else.
- 20:12SPEAKER_04: Just listen to the tune, go on the go on her page and check her out and see the visuals, and you would understand like something is bubbling there, something's coming.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: About to enter a new chapter.
- 20:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so that's my number two.
- 20:25SPEAKER_04: You go to go see it, man.
- 20:27SPEAKER_00: I'm I yeah, I can picture that visual as well, and it sounds cool.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, and it's like she always wears like she wears like quite cool colours and she's got like interesting hats and stuff, like baggy fits, and that um yeah, so it's just it's cool.
- 20:41SPEAKER_04: It just all just looks very cool.
- 20:43SPEAKER_04: This cool person, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:44SPEAKER_04: And then she's like spitting.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: I'm like, okay, this is talent as well.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 20:49SPEAKER_04: So everything comes together.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Okay, sick.
- 20:51SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so please give it a go.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Very nice, very nice.
- 20:54SPEAKER_00: Shout out Mute.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Um, okay, my third recent rotation, the final one for the day.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: Um, going in a slightly different direction now.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Um, this is an artist called Boy Soda, and the song is called Hit the Road.
- 21:08SPEAKER_04: You're lucky, bro.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: You're lucky.
- 21:09SPEAKER_04: You live, you live to fight another day.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: I'm very close.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: But I told you, I've got like a playlist of like potential recent rotations.
- 21:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he's in there.
- 21:19SPEAKER_04: He's in there, he's in there.
- 21:21SPEAKER_04: So you're lucky.
- 21:23SPEAKER_00: So, what what tune did you choose?
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: I'm glad.
- 21:25SPEAKER_00: Uh, it's called Hit the Road.
- 21:27SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:28SPEAKER_00: Um, so he is a Samoan Australian artist, um, yeah, which is obviously moving quite far away from the UK rap uh pocket that we've been in.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Um, this is like funk soul vibes, and yeah, this it yeah, I just came across it um and was like, oof, this is very good music.
- 21:49SPEAKER_00: Clean, bro.
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Super clean.
- 21:51SPEAKER_00: Um, it's like full band.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a grooving bass line in there, which I was like, I had to turn that up for one.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Um and literally.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: To that one quite loud.
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: Um backhand vocals as well, extremely clean and just very enjoyable.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: Like I feel like when people have got good BVs on track, I'm like, you care about your craft and you've considered this.
- 22:14SPEAKER_00: We're not just saying I'm the artist and I'm gonna do a few sort of stat vocals here and there, yeah.
- 22:20SPEAKER_00: Um whether or whether you you can sing or not, maybe you're out here just doing ad libs, but this is like, yeah, you've you've it's really considered um and and and crafted, and then for for him, his vocal range is like really impressive, and so that almost operates as like its own instrument.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: Um, and yeah, a lot of his music does sound quite similar in in that sort of sonic.
- 22:43SPEAKER_00: Um, so yeah, if you're into your sort of funk soul or just appreciate good music and good arrangement, then boy soda is definitely one to check out.
- 22:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I agree, I agree, but I'm glad I'm glad, I'm glad.
- 22:54SPEAKER_04: You've smashed it today, bro.
- 22:55SPEAKER_04: Thanks, man.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: Good go three boys three for three, three for three, baby.
- 22:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, boy soda, just super super clean, bro.
- 23:03SPEAKER_04: Super, super clean.
- 23:05SPEAKER_04: I can't say anything else.
- 23:06SPEAKER_04: I just you play it, you're like, yeah, it's cool.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: I feel like it's one you can press play to anybody, and you can be a fan of drill, grime, so classical music, and you'll be like, yes.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Yeah, we said this about Elmin before, like, um, yeah, there's certain artists and certain like ways of production where you're like, Yeah, it I can tell this is like professional, like these men are these men are not mucking about.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: So shout out to the Samoa Mand that trust me.
- 23:34SPEAKER_04: Literally, shout him out.
- 23:37SPEAKER_04: Cool.
- 23:37SPEAKER_04: Uh Zabim, yeah, last one.
- 23:39SPEAKER_04: We're gonna bring it home.
- 23:41SPEAKER_04: Okay, so we're going back.
- 23:44SPEAKER_04: All right, we're going to 1988, is what we're doing.
- 23:47SPEAKER_04: We're doing uh I'm going quite popular on this one.
- 23:50SPEAKER_04: I'm going quite big.
- 23:51SPEAKER_04: We're going Bobby Brown every little step.
- 23:55SPEAKER_04: So this is uh this was from his like most popular album, I would say, Don't be cruel.
- 24:02SPEAKER_04: And Bobby Brown of his time was like probably like the king of RB of his run, basically.
- 24:10SPEAKER_04: He was the guy at that point, like he was like the Chris Brown of that time, kind of thing, or or whatever, like Oshra, I don't know.
- 24:16SPEAKER_04: Like he was dancing, stepping, like one of the best performers of his generation, like people say ever.
- 24:23SPEAKER_04: Like, like he's up there.
- 24:25SPEAKER_04: Like, if you see him see him perform, insane.
- 24:28SPEAKER_04: So this is like New Jack Swing.
- 24:32SPEAKER_04: He was like probably the pioneer uh performing artist of New Jax New Jack Swing.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: Um and yeah, just a little, I mean a little bit of history around Bobby Brown and that.
- 24:46SPEAKER_04: He was uh a lot of fans will know this, but anyone who doesn't, and who's like listening to Bobby Brown for the first time, so he he was a part of New Edition, which was a RB group, which was uh basically they were supposed to be the answer to like the Jackson 5, they're supposed to be the 80s version of the Jackson 5, like that's why they have songs like Candy and stuff like that.
- 25:09SPEAKER_04: Um and uh basically Bobby Brown wasn't the lead singer uh to this group, and so he wasn't he wasn't feeling it.
- 25:18SPEAKER_04: So the group formed in like 83, I think, and then by 86 he's like I'm I'm big, I'm bigger than this.
- 25:24SPEAKER_04: I'm uh I need to I need to do I need to be out of here, bro.
- 25:29SPEAKER_04: Like this man, and there's a whole movie about this as well.
- 25:31SPEAKER_04: There's a new movie, so please watch the movie as well.
- 25:35SPEAKER_04: Um, little side note that I've just remembered from the movie.
- 25:38SPEAKER_04: Uh I think Leon Thomas does the singing vocals in this movie.
- 25:42SPEAKER_00: Oh no way, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: So oh, so it's quite a new movie, yeah.
- 25:45SPEAKER_04: Maybe it came out maybe like four years ago, possibly, something like that.
- 25:49SPEAKER_04: Uh so yeah, give give that give that a watch.
- 25:51SPEAKER_04: So it says told you tells you the whole the whole story.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so yeah, he left, and like this was I think his sophomore album.
- 25:58SPEAKER_04: So uh, and there's yeah, there's a there's big tunes in here.
- 26:02SPEAKER_04: So obviously you've got Don't Be Cruel, which is the the main single, um My Prerogative, uh, and then yeah, this one, Every Little Step, which was kind of the first song that kind of put me onto Bobby Brown.
- 26:15SPEAKER_04: Just hella energy, loads of bouncing and that.
- 26:19SPEAKER_04: Um, if you see the music video, there's just him and like two backup dancers, and they're just jumping and they're doing all of this, he's doing all this.
- 26:28SPEAKER_04: It's insane, it's insane.
- 26:30SPEAKER_04: And there's um there's loads of videos of him like doing live performances of it of it as well, and it's the same energy, and he's doing it and singing at the same time.
- 26:39SPEAKER_04: That's in the song, he's got a bit of rapping in there, and then like you know, 1988, like 80s rap is not great, but but you're here for it because you're just here for the time.
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: Uh yeah, man, it the tune was produced by like Babyface and LA Reed.
- 26:54SPEAKER_04: Okay, so they're big boys.
- 26:56SPEAKER_04: In that in the album, it's um got production with Teddy Riley as well, who's like the the pioneer of uh Jack Swing production.
- 27:05SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, that's that's my just give it if you need something little peppy, need to like you know, get a bit feeling in love, but wanna like be a bit energetic about it, Bobby Brown, every little step of that, you know.
- 27:18SPEAKER_04: I've tried to keep it short this one.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: I went on too long about Funkadell last week, so we're gonna keep it short as well.
- 27:23SPEAKER_04: Dr.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: Funkenstein is there.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Dr.
- 27:25SPEAKER_04: Funkenstein.
- 27:26SPEAKER_04: So this time it's just Bobby Brown, every little step, 988.
- 27:31SPEAKER_04: Give it a go.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Nice, some solid pics in there.
- 27:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, man.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: Alright, cool.
- 27:34SPEAKER_04: So that's six new songs for the people.
- 27:37SPEAKER_00: Trust me, yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Should we get into the spotlight arts and see who we're talking about?
- 27:41SPEAKER_00: Let's do it.
- 27:42SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: You know, that's where um like Bel Biv Devo Poison, you know, tune.
- 27:53SPEAKER_04: They're that's new, they're from new edition.
- 27:55SPEAKER_04: They're basically what was left behind.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: They're like what was left behind because every man left.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, every man left.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: And then one of the guys from Bell Biv DeVoe is the uh became like an artist developer, and he basically developed uh Boys to Men.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: Oh really?
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: There you go.
- 28:14SPEAKER_04: Ted bits for you, my guy.
- 28:16SPEAKER_04: That's just that's just for you.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: That's not for listeners.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Alrighty, spotlight artist time, where we get into an artist discography usually centered around a new release that we'll discuss, talk a bit about their journey so far, and yeah, have a bit of dialogue about it, ask each other some questions, maybe bring up some fun facts.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: And today, you are the one who has decided on the artist.
- 28:42SPEAKER_03: Yes, I am the laptop bearer.
- 28:44SPEAKER_03: You are, you are.
- 28:44SPEAKER_00: Let's get into it.
- 28:45SPEAKER_00: Who are we doing today?
- 28:47SPEAKER_04: Spotlight artist.
- 28:48SPEAKER_04: Today is Tiana Major 9.
- 28:51SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 28:52SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, she's treated us to her debut album on Valentine's Day this year, uh, November Scorpio.
- 29:00SPEAKER_04: So I thought it's only right that we stop talking about her.
- 29:03SPEAKER_04: It's only right, you know, give her a couple of bits of info that people might not know.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, I'm gonna give you three words to describe her.
- 29:11SPEAKER_04: I've gone for it.
- 29:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Diva, soul energy is what I've gone for.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: What were you thinking?
- 29:17SPEAKER_04: What do you think?
- 29:18SPEAKER_00: Isn't would you that's how I describe her?
- 29:20SPEAKER_00: That's who she is.
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: Diva in one line, or is that three separate like that's would you say it's an amalgamation.
- 29:27SPEAKER_00: She's diva soul energy, or is it like diva?
- 29:31SPEAKER_04: Soul energy.
- 29:33SPEAKER_04: That's what I'm saying.
- 29:34SPEAKER_04: Three channels.
- 29:35SPEAKER_04: That's okay, that's what we're dealing with.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: I like it.
- 29:37SPEAKER_04: I like it.
- 29:38SPEAKER_04: I'm saying that so straight off the bat, yeah.
- 29:40SPEAKER_04: Some of the influences that she has mentioned: Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Shaq Kahn, Erica Bidu, Lauren Hill.
- 29:49SPEAKER_04: That's diva.
- 29:50SPEAKER_04: Fairs.
- 29:51SPEAKER_04: That's soul, and that's energy.
- 29:55SPEAKER_04: So this is what this is what we did.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: I hear it.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: This is what we did.
- 29:58SPEAKER_04: So do you do you know do you know much about Tiana Major, Major 9, and that?
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: What we say?
- 30:03SPEAKER_04: I need to before we start, I need to understand what who on the channel is.
- 30:06SPEAKER_00: Temperature check.
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: What level of moron am I talking to today?
- 30:11SPEAKER_04: When did you like discover or like hear about her or whatever, and then I'll tell give you a little bit more.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: And then you can fill the gaps.
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: So I've I've known of her for a long time.
- 30:20SPEAKER_00: In terms of like information or facts about her, I really can't tell you much.
- 30:24SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's perfect, bro.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I probably I think I discovered her 2019.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 30:29SPEAKER_00: Um and I think it was around I came across her like the I think it's at sixes and sevens EP and rainfall on Stormzy.
- 30:38SPEAKER_04: That's that's perfect time then, man.
- 30:39SPEAKER_00: Heavy as the head.
- 30:40SPEAKER_04: You do you're doing well then.
- 30:41SPEAKER_04: You're doing well, don't worry about it.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 30:42SPEAKER_04: So I'm I'm the same.
- 30:44SPEAKER_04: Uh that that EP was 2020, and that was that's the same time I I discovered it as well.
- 30:50SPEAKER_04: So uh she's got a big tune in there, real affair, but we'll get into that.
- 30:53SPEAKER_04: We'll get into that.
- 30:54SPEAKER_04: So let just talking about her general timeline before we get into the discography.
- 30:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, I'll frame it this way she's back from a two-year hiatus as well.
- 31:04SPEAKER_04: So and I'll felt like that that hiatus will be explained.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: So she was she was gone from 2022, and she basically came back late 24 with a couple of singles for this album, and we'll get I'll explain why that is and makes sense because I feel like some of the the singles from the album have existed in my like consciousness for a while, and then I was like, I was like, this these aren't new, right?
- 31:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, because I know and have known.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, cool.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: Let's get into it.
- 31:32SPEAKER_00: Let's I'm looking forward to it.
- 31:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so she's British Jamaican, she's from East London, Newham, is where she's from.
- 31:38SPEAKER_04: Okay, sure.
- 31:39SPEAKER_04: One of four siblings.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: Um, she basically her music, musical beginnings was her mum used to take her to church, and her mum was the um kind of helped out in the church school.
- 31:53SPEAKER_04: So she, when she was younger, when she was like five, she used to help her mum like prep for the on the weekend of the church and stuff, and it meant that she would like be learning the songs that and the like gospel gospel tunes and stuff that they would they would be gonna be doing for their class, and that's when she kind of just fell in love with music.
- 32:11SPEAKER_04: Well, early, yeah.
- 32:13SPEAKER_04: So we're early, so yeah.
- 32:15SPEAKER_04: My next line in the facts is she always wanted to be a singer, so from this point, she was like, I'm I'm here, I'm gonna be a singer, this is what I'm gonna do.
- 32:24SPEAKER_04: So she was laser focused, and not like a couple other artists that we've spoken about where they said they don't want they wanted to do this, or they didn't really know, they didn't know if they had had the maybe the talent to do it initially.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: She she this is not this is not the Tiara, this is not the energy that we're dealing with, right?
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: So she always knew her mum was nicknamed uh showbiz mum for with uh close family and friends because she would always kind of push Tiara out to like sing in public essentially.
- 32:54SPEAKER_04: Uh a pivotal moment for her was they had uh a local like got talent uh show, which was Newham's Got Talent, uh, and she won it basically.
- 33:04SPEAKER_04: So that was that was in her words a pivotal moment when she knew, like, all right, I I believe in myself and it's being validated, so this is what I'm gonna do.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: Uh in 2014, she also won uh Mobo Unsung as well.
- 33:20SPEAKER_04: Oh no, she was a finalist, she didn't win it, so she was a finalist at that point.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Puts you on the map though, that stuff.
- 33:24SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so she's already she's bubbling up.
- 33:27SPEAKER_04: Um, she is 30s, so she's our age as well.
- 33:30SPEAKER_04: It's nice to know.
- 33:32SPEAKER_04: Nice to know how some work.
- 33:33SPEAKER_04: Okay, interesting.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like in in the album, she alludes to like a few years left of my 20 years.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:38SPEAKER_04: So that kind of alludes to when when a lot of this stuff was written, right?
- 33:42SPEAKER_04: So this album has been a long time in the making.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: I rate that that she put that out because I feel like for me, if I was putting that out, I'd be like, oh, I don't know, because is this integrity?
- 33:51SPEAKER_00: Do I have integrity with this?
- 33:53SPEAKER_00: So that's good, that's good.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: It shows you where she was when she was writing it.
- 33:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's that's fine.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: You can't you can't like write and think about like, oh yeah, I'm gonna be receiving this.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: So yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:04SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
- 34:05SPEAKER_04: So she's yeah, so she's at our age as well.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: So okay, nice, nice.
- 34:09SPEAKER_04: So when she first like went into music, she uh she went by the name Tiana Thomas, which is her name.
- 34:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, but there is an artist called Tiana Thomas, who is like an Oscar Grammy winning RB artist already.
- 34:26SPEAKER_04: So so she basically chose Tiana Major Nine um to differentiate between the two.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: And obviously, she chose Major Nine because that's uh a musical chord, and she was very much into jazz, she studied music when she was in college, um, so it's kind of an o to that, right?
- 34:46SPEAKER_04: Yes, so that's just like the little history before we're we're professional artists, so now we're we're doing this, we're doing this, we're independent, we're gonna release some songs and stuff.
- 34:58SPEAKER_04: So 2017 is when she first starts releasing music.
- 35:01SPEAKER_04: So between 2017 and 18, she has three singles uh Merry Go, uh Let It Back, and uh Mr.
- 35:10SPEAKER_04: Mysterious.
- 35:11SPEAKER_04: Uh, all RB sold.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: Uh Mr.
- 35:14SPEAKER_04: Mysterious has got kind of uh notes of like Caribbean influence and reggae influences with the drums and stuff, so you can kind of she's trying to weave in her identity, which is already nice at an early stage.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Uh after that, she has uh an EP called Rehearsal at Nine, which includes those three songs and four new songs, and yeah, it's all R and B soul, it's all and with hints of jazz as well.
- 35:42SPEAKER_04: So it's a lot a lot of acoustics, piano-based songs.
- 35:46SPEAKER_04: She's very strong vocally, as you know, so she's just like she's just singing off to showing showing her talent.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: Now 2020, which is where we we we enter the scene, and we're like, oh, are we back?
- 36:00SPEAKER_04: So yeah, 2020, EP at sixes and sevens.
- 36:04SPEAKER_04: So this is her first song uh signed.
- 36:08SPEAKER_04: So she gets signed in 2019, the year before, to Motown.
- 36:13SPEAKER_04: So the way this happened this happened, basically, she has a like a long time friend and producer that she collaborates with a lot called uh progression.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: Do you know progression?
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:25SPEAKER_04: I knew you knew progression.
- 36:26SPEAKER_04: I checked.
- 36:28SPEAKER_04: I was looking at this and I was like, Harrison follows progression.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: How does this guy, how do you how do you know who that is?
- 36:32SPEAKER_04: You just know his music and stuff.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but you also exec like the Stormzy third album, in it.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: So like we had some isn't it?
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: You mad boys in that so what we shout out to progression, like yo, we mentioned you on the pod, bro.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: Like, give us a big one.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, right, nah, he's the coldest, trust me.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: Cool, he's the coldest.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so she throughout uh because obviously doing this research, I've kind of I was looking at interviews, but I was looking at different stages of her career having interviews, and that is a name that she like champions throughout.
- 37:02SPEAKER_04: She's like, Progression's the guy, progression's the guy.
- 37:05SPEAKER_04: So uh, and even when she posted uh on Instagram of her album releasing, she did a like a collab post with progression, and it was like yeah, because he exec this one as well.
- 37:15SPEAKER_00: I saw he had credit, yeah.
- 37:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 37:17SPEAKER_04: So so he's the guy, and this is the first time I'm hearing I'm hearing of him, but anyways, back to the story of being signed to Motown.
- 37:23SPEAKER_04: So she's working with Progression, and basically he's talking to the AR, and they're listening to his production and his beats, and uh a couple of a few of the songs have Tiana's vocals on it, and they're like, It pricks their ears, and they're like, who's this?
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: What's going on here?
- 37:40SPEAKER_04: And he obviously says, Yes, Tiana made a nine, she's doing she's doing this, blah blah blah.
- 37:44SPEAKER_04: Um, and basically they're kind of the hunt began begun, like we need to find this girl.
- 37:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, at that time, she kind of did her first uh live performance in London, uh, and they went to the show and they're like, sign here, you're with us.
- 38:01SPEAKER_04: So so and then so then she was signed to Motown.
- 38:03SPEAKER_04: So that's 2019, and then that follows the next year EP at sixes and sevens.
- 38:10SPEAKER_04: So this EP off the bat critically acclaimed.
- 38:14SPEAKER_04: This gets it gets a Grammy nomination for Clide, which has a feature collaboration with Earth Gang, and it's the uh like the titular song um of the movie I didn't write the movie down, oh my god, I can't remember what it's called.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: Queen and Slim.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh Queen.
- 38:35SPEAKER_02: Lights Escape Me.
- 38:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:37SPEAKER_04: Which is such a sick thing.
- 38:39SPEAKER_04: Which, yeah, and if you haven't seen that film, I would say I would suggest watch it because it's like that is like wrapped up in music, right?
- 38:49SPEAKER_04: There's so much there's so much music in that album, uh in that move in that movie.
- 38:53SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, they get a nomination for that song and it just blows up.
- 38:58SPEAKER_04: It's like millions of views and stuff.
- 39:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's the first single in your in your like first signed EP.
- 39:05SPEAKER_04: So she's already she's already pop it off.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: Uh a song in there that I I wanted to mention as well, which is think is called Think About You, which is basically like a reggae, like lover's anthem and stuff.
- 39:17SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of in we've already seen signs of her kind of bringing in the Caribbean side of things, but now she's got like a full like reggae beat in there, and it's it goes off, it goes off, and she's got a remix of that as well, um, which is goes even deeper into like the Jamaican culture.
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: Um, the themes of of the EP is like love and vulnerability and emotional honesty and stuff like that, which is kind of something that you see throughout her music, yeah.
- 39:45SPEAKER_04: So that's that's 2020, August 2020.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: December 2020, we have back at sixes and sevens.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: So this is like a stripped bag uh EP acoustic acoustic renditions.
- 40:01SPEAKER_04: So you just got like yeah, loads of acoustics for all basically all I love it when artists do that, which yeah, gives her gives her the opportunity to be like, here's the vocal, bro.
- 40:10SPEAKER_02: This is me, bro.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: This is me.
- 40:13SPEAKER_04: So she has that, and that that that comes out in December.
- 40:17SPEAKER_04: Uh February 2022, she's back with two seater with SMI no big, big two.
- 40:27SPEAKER_04: Um a lot of a lot of uh kind of the similar themes and melodies and uh a lot of guitar-led RB.
- 40:35SPEAKER_04: Uh, but on this track as as well, at the end, she's rapping as well, and there's a beat switch, and she starts rapping, and it's like okay, okay.
- 40:44SPEAKER_04: So like and she's she's good at it.
- 40:46SPEAKER_04: She's obviously rapping in in like uh East London accent, and you can really feel the grit of it as well.
- 40:51SPEAKER_04: Um, so that's that's yeah, I that's one of my favorite songs to be honest, and that will that leads to a four-track EP, so that's one that's the first single, uh, and that's For Me Once is what it's called.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: That came out in uh March 2022, so that's the month later.
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: And this is her last project under Motel.
- 41:12SPEAKER_04: So she during this time, just after that EP, she goes on tour with Jasmine Sullivan as a supporting act, which is pretty pretty good.
- 41:24SPEAKER_04: Like, if it was one of the artists that I would say like likened her to, it would have been Jasmine Sullivan.
- 41:29SPEAKER_04: So it's like a perfect match.
- 41:31SPEAKER_04: Makes sense, yeah.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: And she goes on her first like American tour as well, so she's going everywhere in it.
- 41:36SPEAKER_04: Um she then in the summer um supports Adele at the British Summertime BST Festival.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: Uh so she does support her for the two days, um, which is insane.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: And basically the the way that's come around is because Adele was a fan of her at Sixes and Sevens EP and was one of the first like artists to co-sign that album, uh that EP as well.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, but I can remember that actually.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so she's just like just a fan, basically.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: So sick, so sick.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: Bring brings her brings her down.
- 42:10SPEAKER_04: So then uh what happens then is basically Tion is trying to get gold in terms of her like an album album now, and she essentially just couldn't get in contact with the label.
- 42:23SPEAKER_04: It's uh in the interview, she alluded to uh there being kind of a lack of people and personnel that's so no one was returning her calls or anything, which sounds insane.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Insane.
- 42:35SPEAKER_04: It sounds like someone, an artist that you'd think is on such a trajectory at this point, it's kind of everything everything she's done, it's kind of been gold, basically.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, and yeah, she can she was struggling to find anyone to talk to about like anything, so um yeah, so she was basically just left the label, which is insane, isn't it?
- 42:59SPEAKER_03: Which is insane.
- 43:01SPEAKER_04: I think during this time, I think it was it was more due to organizational infrastructure than anything else.
- 43:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, Motown UK UK became a thing at this point.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, so all of her I guess she used to have like a whole team around her disappeared because she was with the US before and now she was kind of converting into the UK and I don't think the infrastructure was set properly yet, essentially.
- 43:30SPEAKER_04: So she kind of almost fell through the cracks basically.
- 43:34SPEAKER_00: Wild.
- 43:34SPEAKER_02: It's it's a bit of a bad one, isn't it?
- 43:36SPEAKER_02: It's a bit of a bad one.
- 43:37SPEAKER_00: Obviously, from experience, I I know, and you know, if you doesn't it only requires one Google search to understand that there are like organizational restructures and stuff, and that changes personnel and reduces personnel.
- 43:47SPEAKER_00: But I just feel like even in the unknowns, it's common courtesy to pick up the phone to an artist, like taking the initiative, let alone not answering when they call.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: So that's I mean, the whole for like for however people perceive record labels, the whole thing is that they're service providers, isn't it?
- 44:08SPEAKER_00: And they're effectively agents between where an artist needs to get, and they're the conduit between everything and their mouthpiece.
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: So it's like, bro, if you're not actually uh playing ball, it's peak.
- 44:20SPEAKER_00: And especially as you say, when someone's um and it's even if someone's at an early stage and not releasing music, they still need like guiding through that.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: But when someone's on such a great trajectory as well, that's what are you doing?
- 44:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's the thing for me.
- 44:33SPEAKER_04: Like, just even like taking a like capitalist callous view on things, yeah.
- 44:38SPEAKER_04: You think this is an asset that is killing it, and it's only Yeah, the trajectory is like this.
- 44:43SPEAKER_02: It's only going it's only gonna be better.
- 44:45SPEAKER_04: It's only gonna be better.
- 44:46SPEAKER_04: So surely we need to touch base and make sure we cater to this artist.
- 44:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:51SPEAKER_04: Um but wow, but that wasn't the case.
- 44:53SPEAKER_04: How disappointing.
- 44:54SPEAKER_04: So yeah, so now she she's wet goes back to independent, basically.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: She's gone indie, label, and then indie again.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:02SPEAKER_04: Uh just a couple comments um that she's she's made uh on the move and kind of how this has shaped her as an artist.
- 45:11SPEAKER_04: Um she says that it helped her understand the industry better from both sides, of course, a lot quicker than a lot of artists would, because she's yeah, now she's obviously understands what needs to be done and what team that she needs to be able to churn something out as an independent artist.
- 45:27SPEAKER_04: She said one of the harsh realities she learned is no one owes you anything.
- 45:31SPEAKER_04: So I guess, yeah, I guess, especially in her perspective, she would have thought, like, yeah, I'm gonna be treated treated well here because I haven't done the label any wrong.
- 45:43SPEAKER_04: It's like so it's not like I've I've done any releases that haven't hit the mark or anything like that.
- 45:49SPEAKER_04: So I guess, yeah, there wasn't any type of loyal loyalty there.
- 45:54SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, because this is just a reality that she she had to learn.
- 45:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, gosh.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: And she she listed a couple of pros and cons with uh being with labels as well.
- 46:03SPEAKER_04: So um the monetary backing when she signed, she said, was like a lot, basically, basically, it was what was necessary to get her music out into the world, yeah, and that was her second point.
- 46:14SPEAKER_04: Basically, it helped put her music out because yeah, I guess you don't know the infrastructure that you need to get these things out into the world, especially being being signed at a young age as well.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 46:26SPEAKER_04: In terms of the cons, um the decision making and kind of the rollout strategy she felt uh was really tough, and it kind of took the fun out of her music, and it almost basically gave her like a writer's block as well, but having to deal with things that aren't art essentially, yeah.
- 46:44SPEAKER_04: It just buggers the mind, right?
- 46:47SPEAKER_04: So that that that was something.
- 46:49SPEAKER_04: Uh and going through this ordeal, it kind of made her feel that she wasn't good enough.
- 46:55SPEAKER_04: So uh that's sad, which is insane.
- 46:58SPEAKER_04: It's insane to hear from someone who like knows that they this is what they want to do, and this is what they think they can do well, and then all of a sudden, like maybe maybe I'm not good enough to do it.
- 47:10SPEAKER_04: Um, so it gave her a bit of doubt.
- 47:12SPEAKER_04: Um and this, sorry, quickly, yeah, go on.
- 47:14SPEAKER_00: Is is is are those like um almost like retrospective thoughts following um the Jasmine Sullivan tour and this and the Adele Co side and all of these things, yeah.
- 47:27SPEAKER_04: So this the uh those those kind of label uh comments uh off of this campaign, this album run that she's she's mentioned this.
- 47:34SPEAKER_04: Okay, I think she when she talks about um kind of her time at Motown, it's not with the regret, it's not like I've done like this was terrible, they've treated me terribly, or anything like that.
- 47:47SPEAKER_04: It's more of like this is something I went through and there's something that I learned.
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and it's stalled randomly.
- 47:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: But now I'm back and I've I've learned better, basically.
- 47:56SPEAKER_00: So I just find it so interesting that you can have so much perceived success and also like genuine quote-unquote success that is like by all accounts objectively positive, innit?
- 48:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and as the artist or the person who's fronting it, you can still feel the insecurities or stuff without validation from a structure that you might have previously felt comfort in.
- 48:24SPEAKER_00: Yeah, even though you've got your peers or like people who are like um you aspire to who are saying you're you're cold in it.
- 48:33SPEAKER_00: It's yeah, it's just funny, isn't it?
- 48:34SPEAKER_04: And I feel like yeah, you your contemporaries and the artists around you are saying that you are very good.
- 48:39SPEAKER_04: Yeah, come through, you're doing it, you're you're the next up kind of thing.
- 48:43SPEAKER_04: But yeah, the powers that be and the people around around uh uh are just not helping it, basically.
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: Well, yeah, it's a great, it's a great learning curve.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: So sure, albeit an unhelpful one.
- 48:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:57SPEAKER_04: So basically that brings us to the album, right?
- 49:01SPEAKER_04: So that's the end of 2022.
- 49:03SPEAKER_04: Uh as I said, it's everything else after that is alb album.
- 49:08SPEAKER_04: So November Scorpio came out this year, Valentine's Day.
- 49:13SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, you guessed it.
- 49:15SPEAKER_04: Star sign November Scorpio, that is what she is.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: She is a November Scorpio.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: Uh it's 11 songs.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: Uh 37 minutes is what it is, just under just under 38, which is a decent, decent length.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: That's it.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm a I'm a 40, 40 to 50 minute man personally.
- 49:32SPEAKER_04: So I would have liked I would have liked an extra song in there, maybe to push it into 40, and I would have been just because I want as much from an artist as possible.
- 49:40SPEAKER_00: Sure, sure.
- 49:41SPEAKER_04: I don't know when she's gonna release again.
- 49:42SPEAKER_04: I don't know, I don't know.
- 49:44SPEAKER_04: So yeah, 37 minutes.
- 49:46SPEAKER_04: Um, she said it's a love letter to herself, um, it's very introspective, uh, talking about uh how she likes to be loved or how she's been loved in the past.
- 49:59SPEAKER_04: Um, and it's also about kind of relationships in general, right?
- 50:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so I've noted three tracks, uh four tracks in actually, that I just wanted to speak about quickly, and then we'll kind of get into like what's your favourite song and all that.
- 50:16SPEAKER_04: Okay, okay, let's do it.
- 50:17SPEAKER_04: Kind of thing, just because in terms of the sequencing, I thought was quite interesting.
- 50:21SPEAKER_04: Um, and they're just four tracks that I like as well.
- 50:24SPEAKER_04: So it's it's tracks three to six.
- 50:27SPEAKER_04: So the first track is money, um, which obviously we're talking about this whole thing is about love, and uh the rest of it is the rest of the album is more about relationships with people, but this is the only song that's kind of separate, and it's about relationship and love of money, um, which I've found really interesting.
- 50:47SPEAKER_04: Uh, she had uh she said towards the end of her time at Motown she was getting more money than she'd ever seen, and she said it wasn't even it wasn't even a crazy amount, but it was more than I've ever been exposed to, and it just dried up at one point.
- 51:02SPEAKER_04: So you can see that's that's kind of a moment that's kind of stuck with her as she was building this album, and so much so that she wanted to dedicate a whole song to it.
- 51:11SPEAKER_04: Um some some of the quotes from the song itself is like money talks and money walks if you don't treat money right, um, and I'm still trying to figure out how to love you.
- 51:22SPEAKER_04: It I'll have you if you have me, I'm ready.
- 51:24SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of yeah, saying that she's had these struggles as she as she's said, um, but she's turned a new leaf and she's trying to not not be responsible, but trying to have a different relationship with money going forwards, which I just found I just found it was interesting.
- 51:42SPEAKER_04: It was like it was just it's in terms of the lyric, it's very different to the rest of the album.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, instantly as well.
- 51:48SPEAKER_04: And the way the the production is, it's just literally just like a guitar in the background, and it's her kind of with like whispery vocals, yeah.
- 51:56SPEAKER_04: So it feels like it's it is a personal like note to see.
- 51:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very thoughtful in a thing.
- 52:00SPEAKER_04: So I just thought that was quite cool.
- 52:02SPEAKER_04: Track four is fight with uh three eyes in the middle.
- 52:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's a funny one for spelling.
- 52:09SPEAKER_04: I'd like to learn, I'd like to learn about like the decisions of how people make make uh song names and stuff, but yeah.
- 52:16SPEAKER_04: So that song is about uh kind of being mature, not wanting to waste time in fighting in a relationship, and kind of being like the bigger person almost.
- 52:27SPEAKER_04: And then track five straight away goes to Shook One, which is essentially a heartbreak this record, right?
- 52:34SPEAKER_04: And it's like the opposite of what she was saying in fight.
- 52:37SPEAKER_04: So it's showing like the yin and yang kind of vibes, uh, where she's saying in one one side she's saying, Yeah, you know, let's be let's be grown and not have these fights, and then straight into Shook One, she's like, Yeah, nah, these these guys, these people are all of you man are just Shook and you're you're you're scared of confrontation, yeah.
- 52:55SPEAKER_04: So um a little bit a note on Shook One, it's uh if you've heard it, it's the sample from 1995 Mob Deep, Shook One's Part 2, which is it's a big big tune.
- 53:12SPEAKER_04: When I heard obviously you hear um the start of the track and you hear the sample straight away, and I'm like, where's this going?
- 53:20SPEAKER_04: What are we doing here?
- 53:22SPEAKER_04: But uh it's yeah, it's very it's very well done.
- 53:25SPEAKER_04: She said she kind of approached it as a rapper would in terms of lyrics, interesting, kind of sang sang to it.
- 53:33SPEAKER_04: That song is produced by um progression as well, so he kind of basically produced the whole thing.
- 53:39SPEAKER_04: I think he did some of the writing as well, yeah, and then Tionna put her own twist to it.
- 53:44SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 53:45SPEAKER_04: Um oh yeah, a little I'll put a little I'll put a little note about Mob Deep.
- 53:49SPEAKER_04: Obviously, we've got Tribical Quest here.
- 53:52SPEAKER_04: Q Tip was the person that discovered Mob Deep.
- 53:55SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 53:56SPEAKER_04: Mob Deep, what they would do, uh, like a lot of nighties artists and stuff, they would like have loads of cassettes and they'll just keep on like giving them to people in the radio station and be like, oh listen to this, or give it to artists, listen to this, listen to this.
- 54:08SPEAKER_04: And obviously, they've bumped into Qtip at one point.
- 54:10SPEAKER_04: He's like, Oh, listen to this, and then he was like, Oh, yeah, damn, this is this is decent.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: So then he took it to um his manager, an agent, and they he managed them, and then that's how they came to be.
- 54:24SPEAKER_04: So, you know, at full circle, you know, wrapped it around.
- 54:27SPEAKER_02: So I'll give you I'm giving you the facts, man.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: I'm giving you the facts.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: Uh and yeah, so she said uh on on the Shook one as well, she wanted to kind of further show that she was inter she's an international artist, obviously using an American sample because it's a very New York sample.
- 54:45SPEAKER_04: At this time, she would be living in New York at this time as well.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: Oh, interesting.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: So uh I don't know if that's kind of made her kind of get into the New York vibes and stuff as well.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: But um, yeah, she says, I think that the song is important because I don't think my music just sits in England, I think I'm a global artist, and using that sample solidified it for me.
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: So that's what she's so she's doing it with intentionally.
- 55:08SPEAKER_04: She's like, I need to show, I need to show that I'm I'm out here, I'm not just this UK like soul.
- 55:15SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm everywhere, I'm global star, and I can perform this, and people around the world will recognise this song.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: So we go from track five, shook one, to say these guys are too shook for confrontation and they're not about this life, uh, to track six, which is grace, which is uh again, we flip to the other side.
- 55:34SPEAKER_04: As the title says, it's a departure from fight and conflict.
- 55:38SPEAKER_04: And she talks about giving herself grace, uh, patience and choosing her words wisely, and like the main line in the chorus is it's all good.
- 55:48SPEAKER_04: So it's like a nice, yeah, in terms of sequencing, it's nice like conflict and fight, and then it's all good, man.
- 55:55SPEAKER_04: Relax, you gotta you gotta relax sometimes, give yourself some patience and like yeah, just chill out.
- 56:01SPEAKER_04: Uh, a note on this the outro of the song is uh Shobi's mum herself, Tiana's mum is yeah, is on the song and kind of just talking, and I think she's like reciting verses from from the Bible.
- 56:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I thought that would have been her, that's nice.
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: Uh, and it yeah, it's this is that halfway point of the album, so it's like kind of a really grounding moment.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, um, and I thought it kind of shows the importance that her mum still has from being like number one supporter from back in the day till to now.
- 56:31SPEAKER_04: Uh and yet having to recite um a verse in the Bible as well kind of goes back to her beginnings for being the church when you fell in love with music.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: She says, although I'm not Christian, I came from the church, I fell in love with music in in church, it's such a ritual thing, praising singing, and using music as a way to minister and express gratitude.
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: So, like, yeah, that's a part part of her, right?
- 56:55SPEAKER_04: Which is quite cool.
- 56:56SPEAKER_04: As well, um, I think it alludes to kind of the international artist thing because her mum is obviously British Jamaican as well, and she's got that that Jamaican twang, right?
- 57:07SPEAKER_04: So it really, really kind of gives an ode to where she's from as well.
- 57:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 57:11SPEAKER_04: So she's got she's got the UK, she's got the American Global, and now she's got the the Caribbean in there as well, without having to say I've done a reggae song in the album, kind of thing.
- 57:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she's she's kind of and it gives it context without needing to explain it, yeah.
- 57:25SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like sometimes, especially uh especially when you play with like Caribbean sounds, yeah, people will be like, Yeah, yeah, it's like on you and Orabians, what are you doing?
- 57:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it's like you don't need to explain it when you yeah, it's like this this is my culture because these are the people around me.
- 57:41SPEAKER_04: This is what I've been brought up into.
- 57:43SPEAKER_04: Some of the lyrics that she mentions uh in in in some of the songs is like alludes to like corned beef and like corn meal and stuff like that, which are like obviously typical Jamaican um foods that that that we have a lot.
- 57:58SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I just thought it was like a cool, like little subtle put it in, put my mum in there, and it just works on many different levels.
- 58:05SPEAKER_04: Sometimes I'm not really here for just talking, yeah.
- 58:08SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, sometimes like, oh yeah, get get someone to on the phone and they're recording that, oh hey, I'm just calling blah blah blah.
- 58:15SPEAKER_04: I'm not really here for it.
- 58:16SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so unless it has like a good purpose, yeah.
- 58:19SPEAKER_04: Especially when it's staged, I'm like, 'cause it just feels so gimmicky and but whereas I thought this was this was quite cool.
- 58:25SPEAKER_04: It felt quite quite personal, so I appreciate it there.
- 58:28SPEAKER_04: Uh so yeah, that's the four songs that I wanted to talk about.
- 58:31SPEAKER_04: Nice.
- 58:32SPEAKER_04: Um, in terms of collaboration, there's only two name features on there.
- 58:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 58:36SPEAKER_04: Uh Yabba.
- 58:38SPEAKER_04: Serious.
- 58:40SPEAKER_04: What am I mucking about?
- 58:42SPEAKER_04: What am I mugging about?
- 58:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 58:43SPEAKER_04: Uh and uh Keon Harold, who's like a trumpet player who I'd never heard of, to be fair.
- 58:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I've not either.
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: Um, but he goes in on it as well.
- 58:51SPEAKER_04: One of the things she says about collaboration is basically the song the song is the most important thing.
- 58:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 58:57SPEAKER_04: So she won't have features for the sake of it.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: Um, and she's not afraid to have like songwriters if if like the song is the song is key, right?
- 59:08SPEAKER_04: So like as long as that comes out, great.
- 59:10SPEAKER_04: She's happy.
- 59:11SPEAKER_04: So that's kind of my my tidbits and my facts and stuff.
- 59:13SPEAKER_00: Nice, nice.
- 59:14SPEAKER_03: Well, what were you thinking?
- 59:15SPEAKER_03: That's not too bad, right?
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm here for it.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: I feel like I've I've learned some stuff.
- 59:18SPEAKER_00: I like that little um expansion of those those tracks there.
- 59:22SPEAKER_00: Have you got a favourite song in the album?
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: What was that?
- 59:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think my favourite is actually Shook One.
- 59:27SPEAKER_00: Really?
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: Personally, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 59:30SPEAKER_00: So is the way that you yeah, the way that you shared about that was super interesting in the sense of the chosen sequencing.
- 59:40SPEAKER_04: I yeah, I'm a fiend for sequencing.
- 59:42SPEAKER_04: I'm not lying, especially if it's an album.
- 59:44SPEAKER_04: I'm like, you have to think about everything.
- 59:46SPEAKER_04: I feel like there's this there should be so much more, and there is so much more thought behind it, and it's like this was you can tell this was kind of like years in the making, right?
- 59:55SPEAKER_04: Like this has always been on the cards, which is really cool.
- 59:58SPEAKER_04: My favourite song is energy.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Okay, yeah, I just like the tune.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, maybe that's why I maybe I'm an energetic person, and that's why.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_04: And it's probably like the more energetic song out of the album.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_04: Um, and she kind of mentioned in interviews like that well, in that interview, she said that was her favourite song at the time.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_04: Uh, but she said like chop it chops and changes depending on depending on what how she's feeling.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_04: Um, and that she kind of yeah, she's trying to get into like more energetic music and stuff as well, just to have something else in her repertoire basically.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_04: Of course, yeah.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, and I like it, and I like the video, the video, the visuals for that.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: Um I enjoy the visuals for this whole campaign, it's all like kind of red and luscious and stuff, but yeah, man.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_04: I think this whole album was kind of yeah, I guess building her team and as you said, the resource like get getting like my feet on the ground again post post label, and now we've got the ball rolling, yeah, rhythm, yeah, and we'll see, man.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_04: Now she's got that energy, diva, soul energy, bro.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: This is what I'm saying.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_00: Cool, very nice, very nice.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_00: Well, if anyone hasn't listened to November Scorpio Defo Defo, check it out.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_00: Very, very good body of work.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_04: Definitely, man, definitely, and yeah, man, let's wrap up there, then I guess, isn't it?
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_00: Let's do it, let's do it.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_00: Episode eleven, done.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: Peace.
