- 0:01Speaker 1: All right, guys, here we are our last break of
- 0:03Speaker 1: the day, and Steve, I'm just gonna hand it over
- 0:06Speaker 1: to you.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:07Speaker 3: You know, I just found out about the passing of
- 0:11Speaker 3: Kiki Shepherd, and Kiki Shepherd was, I guess you would
- 0:18Speaker 3: call it my co host on Showtime at Apollo. Let
- 0:21Speaker 3: me let me tell you something about Kiki. When I
- 0:24Speaker 3: first went to New York, the first time I performed
- 0:27Speaker 3: on Showtime at the Apollo and I saw Kiki Shepherd.
- 0:31Speaker 3: You know, I had been seeing Kiki Shepherd on TV
- 0:34Speaker 3: on the Apollo before that for years and all the
- 0:38Speaker 3: glamorous you know, outfits and everything, and I was just
- 0:41Speaker 3: like in ah, wow, this Kiki Shepherd. And after I
- 0:45Speaker 3: finished that first night, she said, you was good. And
- 0:50Speaker 3: so the next time I came up there and I
- 0:54Speaker 3: finished performing, she said, what your name is?
- 0:57Speaker 2: I said, Steve Harvey. She said, they like you.
- 1:01Speaker 3: And the third time I went up there was they
- 1:04Speaker 3: asked me to sit in for Mark Curry, who was
- 1:08Speaker 3: the host of Showtime at Apollo amateur Night and he
- 1:13Speaker 3: had just gotten hanging with mister Cooper and I did
- 1:16Speaker 3: the first night that Mark wasn't there, and Kei Key
- 1:20Speaker 3: Shepherd said baby, listen to me. I've been here a
- 1:24Speaker 3: long time. You something else with these people right here.
- 1:29Speaker 3: And one thing led to another and the next thing,
- 1:31Speaker 3: you know, I'm the full time host of Showtime at
- 1:35Speaker 3: the Apollo Amateur Night. But then I did that so well.
- 1:39Speaker 3: I became host of the whole show, and ki Key
- 1:43Speaker 3: Shepherd was my co host. In exchange for what Kiki
- 1:48Speaker 3: had done for me. She had gave me so much encouragement,
- 1:52Speaker 3: made me feel so welcome, told me where they eat
- 1:54Speaker 3: in Harlem, and all this here. She had been doing
- 1:56Speaker 3: it for so long that I turned around and I
- 2:00Speaker 3: I started doing little things for Kiki, you know, to
- 2:02Speaker 3: try to make her life more comfortable, because as the
- 2:05Speaker 3: show became more expensive, they were cutting back, and so
- 2:08Speaker 3: I made sure they took care of Kiki. I made
- 2:10Speaker 3: sure that they had the right hotel room, that she
- 2:14Speaker 3: had car service and everything, because I usually let Kiki
- 2:17Speaker 3: ride home with me at night. And then I just said,
- 2:20Speaker 3: I just thought her car was mixed up, and she said, nah,
- 2:22Speaker 3: didn't get a car service after the show, and we.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Changed all of that.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Every time I came to work at Showtime at the Apollo,
- 2:33Speaker 3: Keiki Shepherd was there, encouraging me because the Apollo was
- 2:37Speaker 3: a hard gig. Man, It was a hard, hard gig
- 2:41Speaker 3: because that Apollo audience is different than any other place
- 2:44Speaker 3: on planet Earth. And in the nineties, man, they were
- 2:48Speaker 3: still on one and it was just a proving ground,
- 2:52Speaker 3: as it probably still is today, but it was a
- 2:56Speaker 3: proving ground back then.
- 2:57Speaker 2: And she just kept encouraging me, kept encouraging me.
- 3:01Speaker 3: And then I would look up and Kekeky would be
- 3:02Speaker 3: on the side of the stage and then she'd come
- 3:04Speaker 3: out there there for the Apollo moments and do her
- 3:07Speaker 3: thing and everything, and the people.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Loved Kekey Shepherd. She was just a warm person. Man.
- 3:13Speaker 3: It really really hurt my heart when I found out
- 3:16Speaker 3: she passed. And it was crazy, man, because she had
- 3:20Speaker 3: just texted me maybe ten days ago, says Steve, is
- 3:24Speaker 3: it still your number? I said yeah, And now she's gone.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And what an incredibly warm person. But even she was
- 3:35Speaker 3: still always trying to help people. She was throwing bowling
- 3:39Speaker 3: parties and get togethers and always trying to raise money
- 3:43Speaker 3: for kids and doing different stuff. Man, ke Key Shepherd
- 3:47Speaker 3: was out of Texas somewhere. I can't remember, this little
- 3:50Speaker 3: small town in Texas. Tyler Tyler She's from Tyler, Man.
- 3:55Speaker 3: She was just a really, really cool person. So I
- 3:57Speaker 3: wanted to take some time. You know, even though over
- 4:00Speaker 3: the years, you know, you know, she and I weren't
- 4:03Speaker 3: really like close close over the years. You know, if
- 4:06Speaker 3: she needed anything, she knew she could call me. She
- 4:09Speaker 3: could ask me questions and anything.
- 4:10Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I put on a couple of shows with me over
- 4:13Speaker 3: the years, but you know, we didn't have a relationship
- 4:16Speaker 3: where we talked every week, see how you do. It
- 4:18Speaker 3: wasn't like that. But she was just a kind person,
- 4:21Speaker 3: and I wanted to take some time out to send
- 4:23Speaker 3: out condolences out to the to the Key Key Shepherd's family,
- 4:28Speaker 3: whoever it is, because that girl right there was special.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Man.
- 4:31Speaker 3: She was just a kind person. Never heard her fighting
- 4:36Speaker 3: with nobody getting into it. Kei Key Shepherd kept the peace.
- 4:42Speaker 2: She tried. She tripped me out. One time.
- 4:44Speaker 3: I had ordered some chicken uh from somewhere up there,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and I took the skin off because I didn't want
- 4:50Speaker 3: the skin. She said, boy, what you doing. He's in
- 4:53Speaker 3: a dressing room meeting. I said, take the skin off.
- 4:55Speaker 3: She said, take the skin off. That's the best part.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And I went and Keiki took my skin from me,
- 5:02Speaker 3: I said, okay, and put it between two slices of
- 5:05Speaker 3: white bread. I said, okay, that's country right there. If
- 5:08Speaker 3: you take the skin with the fried crust and put
- 5:11Speaker 3: it between some white bread, that's country right there.
- 5:14Speaker 2: So Takeky Shepherd's.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Family condolences from us here on the Steve Harvey Morning Show.
- 5:21Speaker 3: She was special, she really really was, and she'll definitely
- 5:26Speaker 3: definitely be missed because she had an impact on a
- 5:29Speaker 3: lot of people's lives. A lot of people eves with
- 5:33Speaker 3: her elegance, the gowns, just the way she was man
- 5:39Speaker 3: and she was so well loved at the Apollo Theater.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Chuck Sudden has passed. He put me on TV from
- 5:48Speaker 3: the Apollo Theater, and Kei Key Shepherd has passed. It's
- 5:51Speaker 3: two Apollo legends, and I just wanted to make sure
- 5:55Speaker 3: that everybody knew that Key Key Shephard was truly an
- 5:58Speaker 3: Apollo legend and will be missed.
