Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / Top Trump officials and ICE sued by family of Renee Good for horrific killing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: After nearly a year of the Trump administration attempting to
- 0:03Speaker 1: smear their daughter and wife as a terrorist and actively
- 0:07Speaker 1: blocking any and all attempts to investigate her murder, the
- 0:10Speaker 1: family of Renee Nicole Good is fighting back today. Earlier
- 0:14Speaker 1: at a press conference, they announced they are suing the
- 0:16Speaker 1: Trump administration for wrongful death, conspiracy and other violations after
- 0:21Speaker 1: her shooting death at the hands of ICE agent Jonathan
- 0:24Speaker 1: Ross during the Trump administration's Operation Metro surge in Minnesota.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Here is the lawyer for the family.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Watch.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Masked, unidentifiable men, women, denying equal protection and rights against
- 0:44Speaker 3: ordinary citizens. Our government has become a grave and mortal
- 0:51Speaker 3: threat to its own citizens. The rule of law to
- 0:56Speaker 3: democracy is like oxygen to the human body. In other words,
- 1:02Speaker 3: ladies and gentlemen, if the rule of law dies, or
- 1:09Speaker 3: we don't have it, then democracy dies with it too.
- 1:14Speaker 3: We will work tirelessly to ensure that the rule of
- 1:17Speaker 3: law does prevail, that democracy does not die, that our
- 1:22Speaker 3: country moves forward under its principles, and we will ensure
- 1:28Speaker 3: that our civil rights are preserved in the name of
- 1:32Speaker 3: Renee Good.
- 1:35Speaker 1: As the lawsuit puts it, quote, Ross's shots were the
- 1:38Speaker 1: predictable and intended product of the operation. His conduct was
- 1:42Speaker 1: in furtherance of a carefully planned, coordinated effort between senior
- 1:47Speaker 1: federal officials and private actors to make two ethnic communities
- 1:51Speaker 1: in Minnesota the object of aggression and abduction, and to
- 1:55Speaker 1: silence by intimidation, arrest, and violence the neighbors and allies
- 2:00Speaker 1: of those targeted communities who observed and documented and warned
- 2:04Speaker 1: of that campaign. The campaign produced two dead Americans, a
- 2:08Speaker 1: third person shot, a fourth dead in Texas detention, and
- 2:12Speaker 1: more than $ 200 million in economic damage to a single city.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Renee was one of those casualties. She was killed on
- 2:20Speaker 1: a public street while doing what thousands of her neighbors
- 2:23Speaker 1: were doing that winter— watching masked armed men terrorizing her
- 2:28Speaker 1: community and refusing to look away. As the lawsuit notes,
- 2:33Speaker 1: Renee Good was killed while peacefully observing the actions of
- 2:36Speaker 1: ICE agents and was in the process of leaving the
- 2:38Speaker 1: scene when Ross fired two shots into her car. Her
- 2:42Speaker 1: last words were, quote, That's fine, dude. I'm not mad
- 2:46Speaker 1: at you. I'm not mad at any of you. Bystanders
- 2:49Speaker 1: captured video of what transpired. And it is very likely
- 2:53Speaker 1: that without that video, the lies told about Rene by
- 2:56Speaker 1: Donald Trump and his administration might have been allowed to stand.
- 2:59Speaker 1: So because of its import, here is the video. But
- 3:03Speaker 1: be warned, it is disturbing.
- 3:10Speaker 3: No! No!
- 3:13Speaker 2: Shame! Shame!
- 3:16Speaker 1: Oh, my God! What the f * * *?
- 3:19Speaker 4: What the f * * *?
- 3:24Speaker 1: Then Officer Ross said what appears to be or what
- 3:28Speaker 1: sounds like on tape, effing bitch. And officers blocked a
- 3:33Speaker 1: bystander from treating her who was actually a doctor, a physician.
- 3:38Speaker 1: In addition to Ross, the suit also names White House
- 3:41Speaker 1: Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem.
- 3:46Speaker 1: former Homeland Security Advisor Corey Lewandowski, White House Border Czar
- 3:51Speaker 1: Tom Hellman, former Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, former Border
- 3:56Speaker 1: Patrol Commander Greg Bovino, as well as various unnamed agents.
- 4:01Speaker 1: At the press conference today, Renee Good's partner spoke about
- 4:05Speaker 1: what life is like without her.
- 4:06Speaker 5: I'm here today because last January, the whole world had
- 4:11Speaker 5: to watch as our entire universe was destroyed. As the
- 4:16Speaker 5: sunshine that was my amazing Renee was robbed from us,
- 4:20Speaker 5: from her children, and from her community that loved her.
- 4:27Speaker 5: I really just want to tell you about Renee. She
- 4:31Speaker 5: was pure love, and she was funny, and she was smart,
- 4:35Speaker 5: and she was gorgeous. She never left anyone without feeling
- 4:40Speaker 5: seen and cared for and without a smile on their face.
- 4:45Speaker 5: She read all the time, and she found beauty in
- 4:48Speaker 5: every moment. She was the center of my universe, and
- 4:53Speaker 5: living without her is like trying to live without the sun.
- 4:55Speaker 5: And you don't know how much light something gives you
- 5:00Speaker 5: until it's gone, and then you feel that absence every
- 5:04Speaker 5: single second. I don't hate the people who took Renee
- 5:07Speaker 5: from us, but what I want them to understand is
- 5:14Speaker 5: Every single day they get to look at their children
- 5:18Speaker 5: and their wives and their sisters and know what they
- 5:21Speaker 5: took from our family. They took a mother away from
- 5:26Speaker 5: her children. They know that and they will carry it forever.
- 5:33Speaker 5: Caring for each other shouldn't cost you your life. It
- 5:36Speaker 5: doesn't take extra to care. What takes extra is holding back.
- 5:42Speaker 5: We are here today not out of anger and not
- 5:44Speaker 5: out of hate. We are here because Renee's love and
- 5:46Speaker 5: legacy demand a better world for her children, for this community,
- 5:50Speaker 5: and for this country. What happened to our family should
- 5:55Speaker 5: not happen to any family, regardless of who you are,
- 5:58Speaker 5: who you voted for, or what you believe. Today we
- 6:03Speaker 5: are taking a step to build the world Renee would
- 6:05Speaker 5: have wanted. The one I promised... Our son I am
- 6:10Speaker 5: working towards every night when I tuck him in. This
- 6:14Speaker 5: is the world that she believed in. It's the world
- 6:17Speaker 5: I'm going to fight for. And that's the world I'm
- 6:20Speaker 5: going to raise our son in.
- 6:24Speaker 1: One American family fighting for their loved one after her
- 6:29Speaker 1: own government tried to strip away her humanity. And this
- 6:33Speaker 1: family now working to protect all of us from what
- 6:36Speaker 1: they describe as a grave and mortal threat. It's where
- 6:39Speaker 1: we begin today with some of our favorite experts and friends.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Senior contributing editor Michelle Norris is back. She's a Minneapolis
- 6:45Speaker 1: native who spent a lot of time reporting on the
- 6:48Speaker 1: ground for us in that community in the days after
- 6:52Speaker 1: Renee Goode was killed. With me at the table, former
- 6:55Speaker 1: Department of Justice pardon attorney Liz Oyer is here. She's
- 6:58Speaker 1: now the host of the podcast, Is This Really Legal?,
- 7:01Speaker 1: And my dear friend, senior political analyst, host of the
- 7:03Speaker 1: Runaway Country podcast, author of the sub stack, How the Hell,
- 7:07Speaker 1: New York Times bestselling author, Alex Wagner is here. The
- 7:11Speaker 1: bestseller is called The Steel for right-wing hardliners, won Republican
- 7:15Speaker 1: presidency and the raid on America's courts. You two were
- 7:18Speaker 1: on the ground there. I find this unbearable to listen
- 7:24Speaker 1: to the family finally talk about... What was taken from them.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And I think for all of us who had to
- 7:31Speaker 1: process and figure out how to share with our beloved
- 7:34Speaker 1: viewers a video of what happened in real time, it's
- 7:39Speaker 1: like a shared trauma now, but it really isn't. It's
- 7:42Speaker 1: this family's loss and something they live with all the time.
- 7:45Speaker 1: What do you think of what we learned today?
- 7:47Speaker 2: First of all, as many times as we have seen
- 7:49Speaker 2: that video, it does not cease to be shocking and
- 7:53Speaker 2: just gut you when you see A life being extinguished
- 7:57Speaker 2: on camera, right? But in service to what.
- 8:00Speaker 1: By someone who calls the victim of a killing an
- 8:03Speaker 1: effing bitch.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yeah, which tells you all you need to know about
- 8:07Speaker 2: the rage and the anger and the grievance being directed
- 8:11Speaker 2: at people who are trying to stop the destruction of
- 8:14Speaker 2: black and brown lives in this country, right? Because that's
- 8:16Speaker 2: the essence of all of this. But I mean, it is,
- 8:19Speaker 2: I think, right and overdue that the family should be pursuing...
- 8:24Speaker 2: damages for this, but it also turns a spotlight into
- 8:27Speaker 2: the brutality of ICE, which, though they are not murdering
- 8:31Speaker 2: American citizens on the street on video in the way
- 8:34Speaker 2: they were last year, I mean, ICE's tactics are as
- 8:39Speaker 2: brutal as ever. I mean, they have separated 150,000 families. Today,
- 8:44Speaker 2: the Supreme Court said that it would hear whether the
- 8:47Speaker 2: federal government's policy of denying immigrants bond hearings and just
- 8:51Speaker 2: throwing them into detention in subhuman conditions for months on
- 8:55Speaker 2: end is legal. Who knows where they're going to land
- 8:57Speaker 2: on that? At the same time, the court is allowing
- 9:00Speaker 2: this government to extradite migrants to third countries like Rwanda.
- 9:04Speaker 2: and South Sudan. I mean, we have not gotten to
- 9:08Speaker 2: a better or more perfect union in the year since
- 9:11Speaker 2: Renee Nicole Goode was shot and murdered in front of
- 9:14Speaker 2: all of us. They've just taken it into the shadows.
- 9:16Speaker 2: But it is, I think, in the spirit of what
- 9:19Speaker 2: she sacrificed that we should talk about the trauma and
- 9:22Speaker 2: the destruction. that ICE continues to wreak across this country.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I think Donald Trump and his party are going to
- 9:27Speaker 2: pay a price for it, but that doesn't mean that
- 9:29Speaker 2: we should stop on election night or the day after.
- 9:33Speaker 2: This is being done in our name right now. And
- 9:36Speaker 2: unless there is real vigilance about both funding and citizen engagement,
- 9:41Speaker 2: it will continue.
- 9:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:43Speaker 1: And I think the piece of it that is so
- 9:47Speaker 1: is that the civil suit takes on added importance because
- 9:51Speaker 1: there is no criminal investigation at DOJ.
- 9:53Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:54Speaker 6: It is so shocking to see that the Justice Department
- 9:57Speaker 6: a year later has done absolutely nothing... with this case.
- 10:01Speaker 6: If you contrast this with another really traumatic incident that
- 10:04Speaker 6: we all witnessed as Americans, which was the killing of
- 10:06Speaker 6: George Floyd, that is a case in which the Civil
- 10:09Speaker 6: Rights Division of the Justice Department immediately sought accountability. There
- 10:13Speaker 6: was a prosecution, there was a conviction, there was a
- 10:16Speaker 6: jail sentence imposed. That Victims' family did not have to,
- 10:20Speaker 6: by themselves, try to pursue justice. That's the job of
- 10:24Speaker 6: the Justice Department, to get justice for victims of crimes,
- 10:27Speaker 6: to get justice for their families, to get justice for
- 10:30Speaker 6: the American people. They have totally abdicated that responsibility under
- 10:34Speaker 6: Donald Trump. The Civil Rights Division has the job of
- 10:37Speaker 6: enforcing laws that prevent crime. the use of excessive force
- 10:41Speaker 6: by people like ICE agents who are employed by the
- 10:43Speaker 6: federal government. That division has been decimated. They have lost
- 10:47Speaker 6: over 50 percent of their staff, including 75 percent of
- 10:51Speaker 6: the lawyers who once worked there. And the civil rights
- 10:53Speaker 6: laws are now being weaponized against the people they were
- 10:56Speaker 6: intended to protect.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Hey, it's Rachel. I am so glad to see you
- 11:01Speaker 4: at the end of that clip because this is where
